Given the high unit value of live American lobsters (Homarus americanus), a non‐destructive field method to assess physiological state is desirable during out‐of‐water transport conditions. This study compared an Uricon® specific gravity refractometer, with a commercial veterinary blood analyser (Vet‐Test), as a method for determining the blood total protein concentration in live, out‐of‐water individuals. Regression analysis of R2 = 0.8641 (n = 64) was observed in determination of blood total protein concentration, y = 0.0036x + 1.0163 where x is the protein concentration in mg dL?1 in Vet‐Test. Our results (R2 = 0.864, SE ± 0.003) support the results (R2 = 0.985) of the previous study conducted by Leavitt & Bayer (1977 ) in which serum total protein was compared with the refractometric method. We therefore confirm that the refractometric method can be used as a reliable method to indicate health of a lobster by measuring the blood total protein concentration. The results show good correlation between the protein concentrations observed using the refractometric method and a Vet‐Test blood chemistry analyser. anova analysis was significant between the protein refractometer and the Vet‐Test (P < 0.05). Although protein concentration units obtained from both methods were different the results followed the same trends. Refractometry as a method is reliable to determine blood total protein concentrations in the American lobster. Consequently, a refractometric method can be used directly by commercial growers and distributors to assess responses to holding facility conditions and to feeding regimes. Whole blood protein concentrations may provide more information than serum protein concentrations as measured in the study of Leavitt & Bayer (1977 ).  相似文献

Extensive diamond mining occurs on land and in the sea on the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia, raising fears that diamond‐mining activities may impact commercial rock‐lobster fisheries and benthic communities. To explore this possibility, the effects of the diamond‐mining fines‐discharge on intertidal and subtidal rocky‐shore communities and on the population structure of the rock lobster Jasus lalandii were assessed at Elizabeth Bay.
  • 2. Sampling over six years at sites covering a range of wave exposures compared impacted sites with comparable reference sites never exposed to the fines. Percentage cover and densities of benthic organisms were recorded on both intertidal and subtidal reefs. Rock‐lobster abundance was estimated from counts and catch‐per‐unit‐effort, and their length frequencies and sex ratios compared in impacted and reference areas.

The deposition of fines had no effect at wave‐exposed sites, but did impact intertidal and subtidal communities at sheltered localities where fines accumulated because wave action was insufficient to disperse them. Reductions of grazers, proliferation of algae and increased dominance by filter‐feeders were recorded at the impacted sites and persisted throughout the monitoring programme. Differences in community structure associated with different levels of wave exposure were, however, greater than those produced by depositing fines. The detected effects of fines‐deposits on the benthos were local and likely to be reversible after cessation of mining.

The fines‐deposit had no detectable effects on the sex‐ratio, size or abundance of rock lobsters, indicating that there is no conflict between the deposition of fines and the fishery for rock lobsters, although substantial inter‐site variability makes it difficult to regard the results as definitive.

Abstract – Fish, which are generally visual foragers, experiences reduced reaction distance in visually degraded environments, which has consequences for encounter rates with prey. Small prey is detected at shorter distances than larger prey, and piscivores are therefore predicted to be more strongly affected by visual degradation. In experiments, roach (Rutilus rutilus) were fed two plankton prey types and pike (Esox lucius) were fed Daphnia and larval roach, in clear water, algal turbid water and water coloured brown by dissolved organic matter (DOM). Planktivorous foraging in roach was not affected by visual degradation, while pike foraging on both Daphnia and larval roach was. Pike showed increased reaction distance to Daphnia in visually degraded water, while it was severely reduced with roach as prey even if the visual range was not reduced below pike reaction distances in clear water. Pike foraging on Daphnia was not affected, but when foraging on roach, the reduced search efficiency was counteracted by increased attack rates. However, there was no increase in movement and no difference between turbid and DOM treatments. Effects on piscivores will likely become more pronounced at later life stages as prey size and the reliance on long‐distance detection increases at the same time as changing climatic conditions may further deteriorate the visual conditions in future.  相似文献

Tropical tuna purse‐seine fisheries spatially co‐occur with various megafauna species, such as whale sharks, dolphins and baleen whales in all oceans of the world. Here, we analyzed a 10‐year (2002–2011) dataset from logbooks of European tropical tuna purse‐seine vessels operating in the tropical Eastern Atlantic and Western Indian Oceans, with the aim of identifying the principle environmental variables under which such co‐occurrence appear. We applied a Delta‐model approach using Generalized Additive Models (GAM) and Boosted Regression Trees (BRT) models, accounting for spatial autocorrelation using a contiguity matrix based on a residuals autocovariate (RAC) approach. The variables that contributed most in the models were chlorophyll‐a concentration in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as depth and monsoon in the Indian Ocean. High co‐occurrence between whale sharks, baleen whales and tuna purse‐seine fisheries were mostly observed in productive areas during particular seasons. In light of the lack of a full coverage scientific observer on board program, the large, long‐term dataset obtained from logbooks of tuna purse‐seine vessels is highly important for identifying seasonal and spatial co‐occurrence between the distribution of fisheries and megafauna, and the underlying environmental variables. This study can help to design conservation management measures for megafauna species within the framework of spatial fishery management strategies.  相似文献

Crayfish growth rates can vary considerably among individuals from the same brood, and social dominance hierarchies in crustacean species occur frequently. These hierarchies can reduce growth and survival when rearing communal groups. Size‐grading and single‐sex culturing are the methods used to combat this. A 160‐day experiment took place on 288 young‐of‐the‐year captive‐born Austropotamobius pallipes, within a closed‐circuit, indoor aquaculture facility. Crayfish were reared in three treatments (a) equal numbers of large males + small females (LMSF); (b) equal numbers of small males + large females (SMLF); (c) individuals of the same size, equal sex ratio; plus two control groups of single‐sex, same sized individuals. Female survival in the LMSF was significantly reduced (52.8%, SD = 20.7%), whereas overall survival in all other groups was high (83.1%, SD = 15.1%). Male growth (6.3 mm, SD = 0.6 mm) was greater than female growth (4.9 mm, SD = 0.9 mm) across all groups. Cheliped autotomy was significantly greater (8.8%) in males (26.7%, SD = 8.9%) than females (17.9%, SD = 2.7%). This study suggests that young‐of‐the‐year juvenile male A. pallipes grow faster and are more aggressive than females. Large males will suppress and reduce survival in smaller females whereas small males, when housed with larger females, will still grow faster than the females. We suggest that it is sex and not size that is the main factor that causes dominance hierarchies and growth suppression within juvenile A. pallipes. Maintaining juvenile A. pallipes in single‐sex groups is optimal to ensure high survival and growth rates.  相似文献

Countergradient variation (CGV) is defined as genetic variation that counteracts the negative influences of the physical environment, minimising phenotypic variability along an environmental gradient. CGV is thought to have relevance in predicting the response of organisms to climate variability and change. To test the hypothesis that growth rate increased with latitude, consistent with CGV, young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, were examined along a ~27° latitudinal gradient in central and eastern Canada. Growth rates were estimated from fork lengths standardised by the thermal opportunity for growth based on experienced water temperatures derived using otolith oxygen stable isotopes. Results demonstrated patterns consistent with CGV, where northern populations demonstrated faster growth rates. A secondary aim was to test for similar geographical patterns in otolith‐inferred metabolic rates, which reflect the energetic costs of standard metabolic rate (SMR) and other processes such as feeding, locomotion, thermoregulation, reproduction and growth. Results demonstrated a significant, positive relationship between otolith‐inferred metabolic rate and latitude, which may reflect an increase in one, or a combination, of the above‐noted physiological processes. The similar latitudinal pattern in growth and otolith‐inferred metabolic rates suggests greater intake of food per unit of time by northern fish. The phenotypic variation in physiological traits observed here demonstrates the significant adaptability of Arctic charr to different thermal regimes with different growing season lengths. Determining the relative contributions of phenotypic plasticity and genetic variation to the observed latitudinal variation will be critical to predicting the responses of Arctic charr to climate change more accurately.  相似文献

Electrofishing techniques are widely used for the estimation of the size of stream‐dwelling fish populations for both fishery management and scientific study. In contrast to multiple pass, population depletion methods, single‐pass catch‐per‐unit‐effort (CPUE) methods are less time‐consuming and labour‐intensive. A possible issue with the commonly used fixed total time CPUE protocol is that it does not differentiate between the time spent actively fishing and the time incurred while not actively fishing (e.g. removing fish from nets and navigating the site). This issue is likely related to fish density. This study compared two methods of CPUE electrofishing and tested the hypothesis that time spent handling fish and navigating a site can be a source of error in the commonly used fixed total time electrofishing method. Seventy‐one sites were sampled across three subcatchments in the Foyle catchment in Northern Ireland. We found a difference in the catch per unit time between the two methods and that this difference increased with fish density. The fixed‐time CPUE method also failed to detect a species presence in low‐density sites.  相似文献

  1. Gorgonians dwelling on the Mediterranean continental shelf are among the most frequent fishing bycatch taxa. These species display several traits, such as long lifespans and slow growth, which make them very vulnerable to the impacts caused by fishing activities with far‐reaching and long‐lasting effects.
  2. Hence, restoration and mitigation actions are crucial to enhance and speed up the natural recovery of damaged cold‐water coral gardens. Given the growing concern to develop effective and affordable restoration actions, the present study aims to propose and technically validate a new large‐scale and cost‐effective restoration method.
  3. This technique, named ‘badminton method', consists of attaching bycatch Eunicella cavolini colonies to cobble supports and returning them to the continental shelf by gently throwing the gorgonian transplants directly from a boat.
  4. Two consecutive field experiments were conducted in order to find the best cobble type support and gorgonian size to be used: first, to evaluate the landing efficiency of gorgonian transplants at different depths (from 5 to 30 m) and second, to evaluate their capability to maintain a correct position over time.
  5. Natural cobbles with large gorgonians attached were the best option. Field results and modelling approaches suggest that the transplants would correctly land on the continental shelf seabed in a predicted area of around 60 m2. Moreover, they would successfully maintain an upright position ensuring gorgonian survival over time.
  6. The success of this method highlights the feasibility of large‐scale and low‐cost restoration actions with promising results for the conservation and recovery of cold‐water coral gardens.

Accounting for variation in prey mortality and predator metabolic potential arising from spatial variation in consumption is an important task in ecology and resource management. However, there is no statistical method for processing stomach content data that accounts for fine‐scale spatio‐temporal structure while expanding individual stomach samples to population‐level estimates of predation. Therefore, we developed an approach that fits a spatio‐temporal model to both prey‐biomass‐per‐predator‐biomass data (i.e. the ratio of prey biomass in stomachs to predator weight) and predator biomass survey data, to predict “predator‐expanded‐stomach‐contents” (PESCs). PESC estimates can be used to visualize either the annual landscape of PESCs (spatio‐temporal variation), or can be aggregated across space to calculate annual variation in diet proportions (variation among prey items and among years). We demonstrated our approach in two contrasting scenarios: a data‐rich situation involving eastern Bering Sea (EBS) large‐size walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus, Gadidae) for 1992–2015; and a data‐limited situation involving West Florida Shelf red grouper (Epinephelus morio, Epinephelidae) for 2011–2015. Large walleye pollock PESC was predicted to be higher in very warm years on the Middle Shelf of the EBS, where food is abundant. Red grouper PESC was variable in north‐western Florida waters, presumably due to spatio‐temporal variation in harmful algal bloom severity. Our approach can be employed to parameterize or validate diverse ecosystem models, and can serve to address many fundamental ecological questions, such as providing an improved understanding of how climate‐driven changes in spatial overlap between predator and prey distributions might influence predation pressure.  相似文献

Hydropower‐related damage to fish remains a great challenge, making objective monitoring of turbine‐related fish injury a necessity. The catch of fish at turbine outlets is currently realised by net fishing, but potential catch‐related injuries are largely unknown. Catch efficiency and fish‐friendliness in relation to fish handling, exposure time, floating debris and fish biomass of four fish recovery installations were assessed using seven species. Highly species‐specific lethal and sublethal effects were observed. Exposure time had the strongest effects on catch‐related damage, being up to 150‐fold increase after 12 hr compared to 1 hr. Up to 84% mortality occurred in the most sensitive species Thymallus thymallus L. Besides exposure time, higher current speed and biomass within the net resulted in greater fish damage. To minimise catch‐related effects, keeping emptying periods <1–2 hr and considering the effects of current speed, fish and debris biomass are crucial to increase data comparability among studies.  相似文献

Almost all environmental management comes at an economic cost that may not be borne equitably by all stakeholders. Here, we investigate how heterogeneity in catch and profits among fishers influences the trade‐off among the triple‐bottom‐line objectives of recovering a fish population, maximizing its economic value and distributing restrictions equitably across fishers. As a case‐study, we examine management reform of an ecologically and economically important coral reef fishery operating within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Using a simulation model, we find that total profitability of the fishing industry is 40% lower if recovery plans are equitable when compared to the most economically efficient plan. However, efficient recovery plans were typically highly inequitable because they required some fishers to cease fishing. Equity was defined according to different norms, and the efficiency loss was greatest when catch losses were shared equally across fishers rather than in proportion to their historical catch. We then varied key social, economic and biological parameters to identify cases when equity and efficient recovery would trade‐off most strongly. Recovery plans could be both efficient and equitable when heterogeneity in fisher's catches and individual catch efficiencies was lower. If fishers were homogenous then equitable plans could have maximal economic efficiency. These results emphasize the importance of considering heterogeneity in individual fishers when designing recovery plans. Recovery plans that are inequitable may often fail to gain stakeholder support, so in fisheries with high heterogeneity we should temper our expectations for marked increases in profits.  相似文献

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV), an aquatic virus infecting shrimps and other crustaceans, is widely distributed in Asian subcontinents including India. The infection has led to a serious economic loss in shrimp farming. The WSSV genome is approximately 300 kb and codes for several proteins mediating the infection. The envelope proteins VP26 and VP28 play a major role in infection process and also in the interaction with the host cells. A comprehensive study on the viral proteins leading to the development of safe and potent antiviral therapeutic is of adverse need. The novel synthesized compound 3‐(1‐chloropiperidin‐4‐yl)‐6‐fluoro benzisoxazole 2 is proved to have potent antiviral activity against WSSV. The compound antiviral activity is validated in freshwater crabs (Paratelphusa hydrodomous). An in silico molecular docking and simulation analysis of the envelope proteins VP26 and VP28 with the ligand 3‐(1‐chloropiperidin‐4‐yl)‐6‐fluoro benzisoxazole 2 are carried out. The docking analysis reveals that the polar amino acids in the pore region of the envelope proteins were involved in the ligand binding. The influence of the ligand binding on the proteins is validated by the molecular dynamics and simulation study. These in silico approaches together demonstrate the ligand's efficiency in preventing the trimers from exhibiting their physiological function.  相似文献

The importance of survival and growth variations early in life for population dynamics depends on the degrees of compensatory density dependence and size dependence in survival at later life stages. Quantifying density‐ and size‐dependent mortality at different juvenile stages is therefore important to understand and potentially predict the recruitment to the population. We applied a statistical state‐space modelling approach to analyse time series of abundance and mean body size of larval and juvenile fish. The focus was to identify the importance of abundance and body size for growth and survival through successive larval and juvenile age intervals, and to quantify how the dynamics propagate through the early life to influence recruitment. We thus identified both relevant ages and mechanisms (i.e. density dependence and size dependence in survival and growth) linking recruitment variability to early life dynamics. The analysis was conducted on six economically and ecologically important fish populations from cold temperate and sub‐arctic marine ecosystems. Our results underscore the importance of size for survival early in life. The comparative analysis suggests that size‐dependent mortality and density‐dependent growth frequently occur at a transition from pelagic to demersal habitats, which may be linked to competition for suitable habitat. The generality of this hypothesis warrants testing in future research.  相似文献

The role of recreational fisheries in the competition for marine resources is increasingly recognised. Their contribution in stock dynamics needs to be accounted for in assessments and management. Management regulations should be based on scientific advice on human and biological dimensions to be effective in reaching their goals. A survey among marine angling tourists staying in fishing camps in two study areas in Norway was conducted to study catch‐and‐release (C&R) behaviour. Although C&R has been assumed to be low in many marine recreational fisheries, this survey showed that for some species, more than 60% of the catch was released. As C&R may be associated with post‐release mortalities, the current management system could be inefficient towards its aim of reducing fishing mortality. It was concluded that it is necessary to quantify release mortalities, to consider C&R behaviour in future management decisions, and to minimise the potential negative impacts of C&R through handling guidelines.  相似文献

Biofilm‐based aquaculture systems constitute a promising alternative for intensive shrimp rearing. Microorganisms forming biofilms can recycle the nitrogen compounds the production units improving the water quality while using zero or limited water exchange. This study aimed to compare the taxonomic profiles and the predicted functions related to the transformation of nitrogenous compounds between a heterotrophic‐ (HtB) and a probiotic biofilm (PrB), and the effect of these on the water quality and the productive response of cultured shrimp. Libraries of the 16S‐rRNA gene (V3‐V4 region) were prepared and sequenced to be used as a taxonomic biomarker. Analysis of metagenomic datasets revelated that genera Halomonas, Planctomycetes and Rhodopirellula were the most abundant genera in HtB; meanwhile, Bacillus, Halobacillus and Flavobacterium dominated in PrB. Regarding nitrogen metabolism, the proportion of genes encoding enzymes catalyzing the six pathways shaping the nitrogen metabolism showed differences between biofilms, which could also explain the difference in water quality between treatments. Concerning the productive response of shrimp, no significant differences were detected except for survival, which was higher in PrB. Finally, the results suggest that biofilms harbour functions for nitrogen metabolism, including dissimilatory nitrate reduction, assimilatory nitrate reduction, denitrification, nitrification, nitrogen fixation and anammox; however, the balance of these functional capabilities seems to be relevant to maintain water quality.  相似文献

Understanding the effects of environmental factors in sperm qualities will be helpful in the development of optimal artificial reproduction methods and contributes towards the knowledge base of better short‐ and long‐term fish semen preservation conditions The objectives of this study were to determine properties and activities of wild‐caught striped jewfish Stereolepis doederleini sperm contaminated with blood or seawater and compare them with data reported in the literature on other freshwater and marine fish species, for effective short‐ and long‐term storage of fish semen. Overall, we observed that the sodium, chloride, glucose, total protein concentrations of normal sperm were not significantly different from blood‐ or seawater‐contaminated sperm. The salinity and osmolality concentration of sperm contaminated with blood were lower than sperm contaminated with seawater and were not significantly different from normal sperm. In addition, the spermatozoa motility (SM) and duration of spermatozoa motility (DSM) in blood‐contaminated sperm were higher than seawater‐contaminated sperm and also not significantly different from normal sperm. The best condition for SM and DSM in normal sperm was dilution rate of 1:50. Sperm was immotile in distilled water, and cationic factors were shown to stimulate the initiation of spermatozoa activation. The maximum SM and DSM were observed in solution containing 0.4 M NaCl, 0.6 M KCl, 0.6 M CaCl2 and 0.4 M MgCl2. This study provides some basic and important knowledge about striped jewfish sperm sensitivity to a cationic condition. In this regard, Na+ is the major inhibitory factor of spermatozoa motility in this fish species.  相似文献

The UK coastal trap fisheries target two key species, European lobster Homarus gammarus (L.) and brown crab Cancer pagurus L. Their stock status is assessed periodically using size‐based, yield‐per‐recruit analysis. Fishery trends are described using landings and, where available, effort data to estimate catch per unit of effort (CPUE), nominally proportional to abundance. Despite being caught together, assessments assume that concurrent capture of these species does not distort their individual CPUE estimates. Here, an in situ experiment tested impacts of inter‐specific and intra‐specific interactions by pre‐loading baited traps with different species and observing subsequent catches. Pre‐loaded European lobster significantly reduced brown crab catches, whereas, other species produced no such effects. The findings highlight the likely inconsistency of using CPUE as an index of abundance if landings data originate from a mixed‐species fishery in which species interactions and targeting behaviour of fishers are unknown or un‐quantified.  相似文献
