Objective: To report internal fixation of a fractured axis with a dynamic compression plate (DCP). Study Design: Case report. Animals: A 7‐year‐old Warmblood gelding. Method: Surgery was performed under anesthesia in sternal recumbency. After fracture reduction the complete transverse fracture in the cranial third of the axis was stabilized with a 7‐hole 4.5 mm DCP. Optimal positioning of the plate and the length of the screws were facilitated by fluoroscopy. Recovery from anesthesia was supervised in a pool. Results: The horse had an excellent outcome and returned to its previous activity level. Conclusion: Surgical treatment with fracture reduction and plate fixation enables normal bearing of the head and neck and improves neck flexibility soon after surgery.  相似文献

A fractured right supraglenoid tubercle in a 15-month-old Thoroughbred gelding was repaired by partial biceps brachii tenotomy, interfragmentary compression, and tension band wiring. The horse is currently being ridden daily and has remained sound for 4 years.  相似文献

A mature Thoroughbred gelding that was used as a high level jumper presented for evaluation of a nonweightbearing forelimb lameness following a fall. Radiographs revealed a complete, noncomminuted, minimally displaced sagittal fracture of the greater tubercle. Supporting limb laminitis was a major concern in the short term based on the severe lameness at presentation. Open reduction with internal fixation was chosen over stall rest in an attempt to more rapidly return the weightbearing function to the limb. The procedure was performed standing and 3 bone screws were placed standing in an attempt to avoid implant or catastrophic bone failure that can accompany recovery from general anaesthesia. The day following surgery the lameness was significantly improved as the horse was able to bear some weight on the heel. The gelding was discharged 5 days following surgery and was fully weightbearing at the walk. Six months following surgery the horse was free of lameness and resumed training. This report describes our experience and rationale in placing bone screws in a standing horse for treatment of a greater tubercle fracture.  相似文献

An open radial fracture in an adult horse (450 kg) was repaired by internal fixation, using two 18-hole 4.5-mm broad dynamic compression plates and 5.5- and 4.5-mm bone screws. The fracture healed completely, but when evaluated 9 months after surgery, the horse was lame on the fractured limb at a trot. Local infiltration of anesthesia along the distal half of the bone plates greatly ameliorated the lameness, suggesting that the plates were irritating the soft tissues and extensor tendons along the cranial and lateral aspects of the antebrachium. Both bone plates were removed simultaneously with no complications, and the horse became sound.  相似文献

Over the past decade, many improvements to small animal internal fracture fixation have been developed, including improved fixation techniques and a more diverse selection of implants. The understanding that appropriate fixation selection is based on a plethora of biologic, mechanical, and clinical factors has also emerged. Classically, the methods of internal fracture fixation have used pins, wires, screws, and plates to rigidly stabilize fractures that have been anatomically reduced with significant disruption to the biologic fracture environment. Newer methods attempt to minimize trauma to the soft tissues surrounding a fracture and promote biologic osteosynthesis using such implants as interlocking nails and plate-rod fixations. This review provides an overview of both the traditional and current principles of small animal internal fracture fixation.  相似文献

Accidental trauma associated with an epileptic convulsion in a 10-year-old, male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) resulted in incomplete paraplegia from fracture and subluxation of T4. Dorsal laminectomy and segmental spinal fixation were used in treatment. The segmental spinal fixation consisted of sublaminar wires attached to a contoured 316L stainless steel U-rod. The chimpanzee recovered sufficient function to allow reintroduction into the chimpanzee colony at a zoological park during the 12 months after surgery and continues to do well 24 months after surgery.  相似文献

A non-displaced radialfracture of a horse was,diagnosed. The horse had an open fracture resulting from external trauma. A diagnosis was made on radiographs taken 48h after trauma. The horse was treated conservatively by box rest and Robert-Jones bandages. After 7 days the wound was opened to let the wound drainage necrotic material and small sequesters and was washed every other day. After 7 weeks, radiographs showed complete consolidation. Four months after the injury the horse was back to work at his former level and is still working two years after the incident.  相似文献

An open proximal metatarsal fracture was identified in a 9-month-old calf. Open reduction, internal fixation, and external coaptation were used to repair the fracture. The calf recovered without complications and was reported to be sound 6 months after surgery.  相似文献

A comminuted scapular fracture in a foal was treated surgically by use of 2 dynamic compression plates. The plates were applied upside down, so that the convex surface of the plate faced the bone. A 3-week-old Standardbred filly had a non-weightbearing forelimb lameness caused by scapular neck fracture. The fracture was repaired with 2 dynamic compression plates placed 90 degrees to each other. A 10-hole 4.5-mm narrow dynamic compression plate was placed on the cranial aspect of the scapular spine, and a 10-hole 3.5-mm dynamic compression plate was placed caudal to the scapular spine. One year after surgery, the filly was not lame when exercising in the pasture, and muscle atrophy was not evident on the affected limb. Eighteen months after surgery, the filly was in race training with no apparent problems caused by fracture repair.  相似文献

We describe a fatal case, in which a horse suffered a fall and as a consequence, rib fractures. Diagnosis was made postmortem and the horse died without showing clear signs of respiratory dysfunction. The retrospective reports of injuries can be important to reduce these traumatic events and to avoid fatalities.  相似文献

选择四只本地土犬制作股骨骨折模型,采用髓内针植入法施行骨折整复及内固定,并通过X线摄片监测骨折愈合过程.1号、2号犬为股骨横骨折,实施单纯髓内针内固定;3号、4号犬为股骨斜骨折,实施髓内针内固定,外加钢丝辅助固定.术后0、7、14、21、35、63天,分别进行X线摄片和临床观察,2号、3号犬股骨对合及愈合良好,术肢功能健全,行动自如;1号犬髓内针于术后第5天脱出而失败;4号犬因患其它疾病而死亡.实验表明,采用髓内针并辅助钢丝固定能够有效治愈犬股骨横骨折、斜骨折,加强饲养管理和功能锻炼能促进骨折愈合.  相似文献
