Three trials were conducted to determine the influence of dietary CP concentration on health and performance of market-transport-stressed feeder calves (Exp. 1 and 2) and on repletion of nutrients lost during a 3-d feed and water deprivation period in steers fed at maintenance energy intake (Exp. 3). In Exp. 1 (84 calves) and 2 (256 calves), feeder calves averaging 184 kg were transported from Tennessee to Texas. In Exp. 1, calves were fed receiving diets containing either 12 or 16% CP. In Exp. 2, calves were fed diets containing 12 or 16% CP and .8 or 1.3% potassium in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. In Exp. 3, four Hereford steers averaging 253 kg were used in an N balance trial. Steers were deprived of feed and water for 3 d and then were limit-fed (1 x maintenance energy requirements) diets calculated to meet 100, 120, 140 or 160% of CP maintenance requirements for 14 d in a 4 x 4 Latin square design. In Exp. 1, calves fed the 16% CP diet had faster (P less than .05) daily gains and higher (P less than .10) feed consumption than calves fed the 12% CP diet during the first 14 d. In Exp. 2, calf performance was not affected by diet CP or K content. Calves fed the 16CP-1.3K diet had lower (P less than .10) mortality than calves on the remaining treatments. In Exp. 3, N balance and serum urea N increased linearly (P less than .05) with increasing dietary CP. Results of these studies are interpreted to indicate that the CP requirement (g/d) of market-transport-stressed feeder calves is similar to requirements of nonstressed calves; however, the CP concentration of the diet of stressed calves may need to be increased when feed intakes are low.  相似文献

Twenty-one Simmental crossbred bulls (311 +/- 11 kg, 9 mo of age) were used to determine the effect of feeding 10, 12 or 14% CP on concentration of hormones in blood and the relationship of these hormones to composition of gain. Six bulls were slaughtered on d 0 to provide an estimate of initial carcass composition (9-11 rib section). Remaining bulls were assigned to dietary treatments. Blood samples were collected every 30 min from 0800 to 2000 on d 0, 66, 136 and 202 of treatment; bulls were slaughtered on d 203. Across all treatments, growth hormone (GH) declined (P less than .05) from d 0 to d 202. Free insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) was lowest (P less than .05) on d 0. In four randomly selected bulls, IGF-I fluctuated during the 12-h sampling periods. Within each treatment group, insulin was greatest on d 202 (P less than .05). Testosterone (T) increased from d 0 to d 66, then declined. Cortisol (C) was lowest on d 66. Thyroid hormones increased (P less than .05) after d 0. Growth hormone and IGF-I were correlated negatively with carcass fat percentage, fat accretion rate and fat thickness. IGF-I concentrations were correlated positively with percentage of carcass protein. Testosterone:cortisol ratio was not related to composition, but high T coupled with low C may be related to carcass leanness (mean carcass fat = 24.4%). These data suggest that GH and IGF-I are the hormones most related to composition of gain in growing beef bulls.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted using corn from clean or aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)-contaminated (182 ppb) sources. Weanling pigs (28 d) were fed one of eight dietary treatments arranged in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design. In Exp. 1 (192 pigs), treatments varied in corn source (clean or AFB1-contaminated), CP level (18 or 20%) and added fat (0 or 5%). At the end of the 28-d growth trials, plasma samples were obtained. An AFB1 x CP level interaction was detected (P less than .05) for growth rate (ADG), feed intake (FI) and feed/gain ratio (F/G). Feeding AFB1 reduced (P less than .05) ADG (.30 vs .37 kg/d) and FI (.57 vs .66 kg/d) and increased F/G (1.88 vs 1.78) of pigs fed 18% CP diets. Performance of pigs fed 20% CP diets was not altered by AFB1. Adding 5% fat to diets improved (P less than .05) F/G but did not improve ADG of pigs fed AFB1. There was an AFB1 x CP x fat interaction (P less than .05) for plasma cholesterol. Adding fat or increasing the CP level prevented the depression of plasma cholesterol in pigs fed AFB1. In Exp. 2 (96 pigs), all diets contained 18% CP and the treatments varied in corn source (clean or AFB1-contaminated), added L-lysine HCl (0 or .25%) and added DL-methionine (0 or .15%). Growth rates and weights at weaning, 365 d, and at slaughter were obtained on 616 bulls in a nonselected Hereford herd over a 10-yr period beginning in 1978. Carcass data were obtained for 401 of these bulls at 16 mo of age and on 101 that were sires or alternates and slaughtered at 30 mo of age. Fifty-five bulls slaughtered at 30 mo of age sired 301 male offspring on which growth data were obtained and 30 sired 169 male offspring on which carcass data were obtained. Bulls gained an average of .75 kg/d preweaning and 1.16 kg/d postweaning on a 168-d feed test. Rate of daily gain from the end of feed test to slaughter ranged from .7 to 1.2 kg/d. Time from the end of the feed test to slaughter ranged from 48 to 140 d. Slaughter weight, marbling score (Small = 12, Traces = 6), longissimus muscle area, fat covering over the 12th rib, percentage of kidney, pelvic and heart fat (KPH), and dressing percentage for bulls slaughtered as yearlings were 470 kg, 7.6 score, 82.5 cm, 8.2 mm, 1.0%, and 58.8%, respectively. The 30-mo-old bulls were slaughtered directly from range pastures. Marbling was devoid or practically devoid and fat covering over the 12th rib and KPH fat were insufficient to measure or estimate accurately. Sufficient variation was not available for statistical analyses of these traits. Bull calves (n = 143) were obtained from two strains of Angus and two strains of Hereford cattle for which replacements were selected on the basis of superior feedlot growth performance on either high- or medium-energy diets. From weaning to slaughter at 15 mo of age, bulls were fed either the high-energy (80% grain + 20% forage) or medium-energy diet (100% forage) corresponding to their strain. Bulls in high-energy diet groups had a greater (P less than .05) scrotal circumference at 12 mo, but not 15 mo of age, than bulls in medium-energy diet groups. Compared with Hereford bulls, Angus had greater (P less than .01) scrotal circumference (36.1 vs 33.9 cm) and greater (P less than .05) paired testes weight (570 vs 464 g) at 15 mo of age. Daily sperm production per gram testicular parenchyma (DSP/g) was affected by strain-diet (P less than .01) but not by breed. Bulls in medium-energy diet groups had 12% greater DSP/g than did high-energy diet bulls (17.4 X 10(6) vs 15.5 X 10(6)). Daily sperm production (DSP) was 9% and 30% greater (P less than .01) for medium-energy diet bulls in 1980 (8.2 X 10(9) vs 7.5 X 10(9)) and 1981 (8.0 X 10(9) vs 6.2 X 10(9)), respectively, compared with high-energy diet bulls. Seasonal availability of lamb in the Western United States contributes to a large fluctuation in lamb supply and value. However, alternatives to fall marketing may not be practical unless palatability traits are acceptable. A 3-yr study was conducted to investigate 1) the effects of slaughter age (7 to 8; 10 to 11; or 14 to 15 mo) on carcass and palatability characteristics of wethers fed an 80% barley diet (Exp. 1); and 2) the effects of finishing on range or on an 80% barley diet on carcass and palatability traits of 14- to 15-mo-old wethers (Exp. 2). In Exp. 1, no differences (P = .27) were detected in flavor intensity or longissimus muscle area among slaughter age groups, but fat depth was greater (P < .05) for 7- to 8-mo-old wethers than for 10- to 11- or 14- to 15-mo-old wethers. Year x slaughter age interactions were detected (P < .10) for hot carcass weight, Warner-Bratzler shear value, body wall thickness, and percentage kidney fat. Hot carcass weight was greater (P < .05) for 14- to 15-mo-old wethers than for both groups of younger wethers in yr 1, did not differ (P = .53) among slaughter ages in yr 2, and was greater (P < .05) for 10- to 11- than for 14- to 15-mo-old wethers in yr 3. Warner-Bratzler shear values did not differ (P > .10) among slaughter ages in yr 1 and 3, but shear values for 14- to 15-mo-old wethers were greater (P < .05) than for both younger slaughter age groups in yr 2. Percentage kidney fat was lower (P < .05) for 14- to 15- than for 7- to 8-mo-old wethers in all years. In Exp. 2, flavor intensity of the meat did not differ (P = .35) between finishing systems, but longissimus muscle area was greater (P = .02) for range-finished wethers than for wethers fed an 80% barley diet. Year x finishing treatment interactions were detected (P < .10) for shear values, body wall thickness, percentage kidney fat, and fat depth. Shear values were greater (P = .10) for range-finished wethers than for wethers fed an 80% barley diet in yr 1, but did not differ (P > .55) in yr 2 and 3. Body wall and fat measurements were greater (P < .10) for wethers fed an 80% barley diet than for range-finished wethers in all years except yr 3, when fat depth did not differ (P = .47). Overall, slaughtering wethers fed an 80% barley diet or range-finished wethers at older ages produced acceptable carcasses with desirable meat palatability traits.  相似文献

A 2(3) factorial arrangement of treatments was utilized to determine effects of postweaning zeranol implantation, breed (Angus vs Limousin) and castration (bull vs steer) on growth, behavior and carcass traits. An initial slaughter group was used to account for breed differences in composition and to determine fat and lean growth in the 9-10-11th rib section (NTE). The remaining cattle were fed a finishing diet to a fat end point of .76 cm, as determined by a backfat probe. Control bulls outgained (P less than .01) control steers both to the first kill date and over the entire test and did not require significantly more time to reach the fat end point. The implant did not influence gain in bulls but did increase gain in steers. Angus and Limousins were similar in growth rate for the first 126 d before the first slaughter date. Limousins required more (P less than .01) time to reach the fat end point. Bulls and Limousins produced heavier (P less than .01) carcasses and larger rib eyes (P less than .05; bulls; P less than .01; Limousins). Steers and Angus had higher (P less than .01) marbling scores and lower bone maturity. Implanting decreased (P less than .05) marbling and increased carcass maturity. Small but significant shifts in carcass wholesale cut weight distribution were found between breed and sex condition groups. Bulls and Limousins had greater lean growth in the NTE. Bulls and steers were similar in fat growth, but Angus exceeded Limousin in this trait. Growing male Synthetic I (1/2 Finnish Landrace x 1/4 Dorset x 1/4 Rambouillet) lambs were used in two experiments (64 lambs in Exp. 1 and 63 in Exp. 2) to test the hypothesis that dietary CP level (9 or 14% of diet as fed) and(or) clinoptilolite (clino; 0 or 2% of diet) affects growth and tissue mineral concentrations of growing lambs fed supplemental Cu. Lambs were individually fed their respective diets ad libitum and killed after 12 wk (Exp. 1) or 16 wk (Exp. 2) to obtain carcass measurements, organ weights and liver mineral concentrations. In Exp. 1, 20 ppm added Cu (as CuSO4.5H2O) increased mortality and depressed BW gain (P less than .01) and daily feed intake (P less than .05) in the presence or absence of clino and at both levels of CP. Liver Cu concentration was greater (P less than .01) in lambs fed added Cu than in those not fed Cu (408 ppm vs 110 ppm, respectively). Neither CP nor clino affected liver Cu concentration. Clinoptilolite increased daily gain of lambs fed high CP but not low CP (P less than .01). In Exp. 2, clino in the diet had no effect on daily gain or daily feed, but 20 ppm Cu addition depressed daily gain (P less than .01) and gain/feed (P less than .07). Organ weights and levels of trace elements other than Cu in the liver generally were not affected by diet in either experiment. It is concluded that high dietary CP or 2% dietary clino did not protect against toxic signs of Cu when Cu was added to the basal diet (10 ppm Cu) at 10 or 20 ppm.  相似文献

Two experiments with a randomized complete block design were conducted to determine the effects of phase feeding of CP on performance, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), manure N:P ratio, and carcass characteristics of steers fed in a feedlot. In Exp. 1, 45 crossbred steers (initial BW = 423 +/- 3.3 kg) were individually fed a diet formulated to contain 13.0% CP (DM basis) for 62 d. On d 63, the dietary CP was maintained at 13.0% or formulated to contain 11.5 or 10.0% CP until slaughter. Actual CP values were 12.8, 11.8, and 9.9%, respectively. Reducing the CP concentration of the diet did not affect ADG of steers from d 62 to 109 (P = 0.54) or over the 109-d feeding period (1.45, 1.50, and 1.49 kg/d for 13.0, 11.5, and 10.0% CP, respectively; P = 0.85). No differences (P > 0.12) among treatments were detected for BUN concentrations on d 0, 62, or 109. Gain:feed, DMI, and carcass characteristics did not differ among treatments (P > 0.10). In Exp. 2, 2 trials were conducted using 184 (initial BW = 406 +/- 2.6 kg) and 162 (initial BW = 342 +/- 1.9 kg) crossbred steers. Data from the 2 trials were pooled for statistical analysis, and trial effect was added to the statistical model. Steers were fed a diet formulated to contain 13.0% CP until reaching approximately 477 kg. When the average BW of the pen was 477 kg, diets were maintained at 13.0% CP or reduced to contain 11.5 or 10.0% CP. Actual CP values were 12.4, 11.5, and 9.3% CP for treatments 13.0, 11.5, and 10.0% CP, respectively. Reducing the CP content of the diet did not affect ADG after the diet changed (P = 0.16) or throughout the finishing period (P = 0.14). Immediately before slaughter, steers fed the 13.0% CP diet had greater (P < 0.001) BUN concentrations than steers fed the 11.5 and 10.0% CP diets. Carcasses from cattle fed the 11.5% CP diet had greater (P = 0.02) fat thickness than the 13.0 and 10.0% CP treatments, whereas carcasses from cattle fed 13.0% CP had greater (P = 0.004) marbling scores than steers fed the 11.5 or 10.0% CP diets. Other carcass characteristics, DMI, and G:F did not differ (P > 0.10) among treatments. The N:P ratio was increased with the 10.0% CP diet (P = 0.02) compared with the 11.5 or 13.5% CP treatments; however, manure composition did not differ (P > 0.10) among treatments. These results indicate that reduced CP concentration during the finishing period does not affect feedlot performance but can improve the N and P relationship in the manure.  相似文献

Pale, soft, exudative (PSE) pork occurs, for the most part, from environmental stress on the pig. Amino acid intake may be related to stress susceptibility through hormone and neurotransmitter induction. Two experiments were conducted to determine whether supplementation of 5 g of tryptophan (TRP) or 10 g of tyrosine (TYR) per kilogram of a 14% CP diet would alter the response of pigs to stress as measured by hypothalamic neurotransmitter concentrations and incidence of PSE. Twenty-four (Exp. 1) and 36 (Exp. 2) 92-kg pigs were offered one of three diets: control, TRP-, or TYR-supplemented for 5 d before slaughter. Dietary TRP or TYR supplementation in Exp. 1. doubled (P less than .05) plasma TRP and TYR concentrations, respectively, and increased (P less than .05) 5-hydroxytryptamine, dihydroxyphenyl ethylamine, dihydroxyphenyl acetic acid, and homovanillic acid concentrations in the hypothalamus. Pigs that exhibited stress at slaughter had lower (P less than .05) hypothalamic concentrations of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and 5-hydroxytryptamine. In Exp. 2, pigs were trucked 55 km to a commercial meat packing facility and slaughtered without a rest period. This handling procedure was designed to invoke a high incidence of PSE pork and thus be a strong test of treatments. Supplemental dietary amino acids seemed to alter the frequency distribution of the severity of PSE pork. These data indicate that dietary manipulation of amino acid precursors of neurotransmitters may offer a practical means of reducing stress response in swine.  相似文献

Five experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of a high-protein, whey protein product (WPP; 73% CP, 6.8% lysine, 12.8% fat, and 5% lactose) and spray-dried animal plasma (SDAP) on growth performance of weanling pigs. In all experiments, pigs were fed experimental diets from d 0 to 14 after weaning in a pelleted form and then a common diet in meal form for the remainder of the experiment. Dietary treatments were established by substituting WPP or SDAP for dried skim milk (Exp. 1) or soybean meal (Exp. 2, 3, 4, and 5) in the control diet. In Exp. 1, we maintained a constant level of lactose in all diets by adjusting the amount of added crystalline lactose. The amount of lactose in diets used in Exp. 2 through 5 varied slightly by the addition of WPP. In Exp. 1 and 2, 180 weanling pigs (initially 5.8 kg and 19 +/- 1 d of age or 5.5 kg and 17 +/- 1 d of age, respectively) were used. Treatment diets contained SDAP (2.5 and 5%) or WPP (2.7 and 5.4% in Exp.1, and 2.5 or 5.0% in Exp. 2). In Exp. 1, from d 0 to 7 after weaning, ADG and ADFI increased with increasing SDAP (linear, P < .01). No other treatment effects were observed during the d 0 to 14 period. In Exp. 2, from d 0 to 14 after weaning, ADG and G:F increased (linear, P < .04) with increasing SDAP or WWP. In Exp. 3, 305 weanling pigs (initially 4.1 kg and 12 +/- 1 d of age) were used. The control diet contained 2.5% SDAP. The experimental diets were similar to the control diet but contained an additional 2.5 or 5.0% SDAP or 2.5 or 5.0% WPP. From d 0 to 14 after weaning, ADG, ADFI, and G:F increased (quadratic, P < .05) with increasing SDAP up to 5.0%. Increasing WPP increased ADG (quadratic, P < .07) and ADFI (linear, P < .09). In Exp. 4 and 5, 329 and 756 weanling pigs (initially 4.1 kg and 12 +/- 1 d of age and 5.2 kg and 18 +/- 1 d of age, respectively) were fed diets in which WPP was substituted for 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% (Exp. 4) or 0, 50, and 100% (Exp. 5) of the SDAP in the control diet. In Exp. 4 and 5, from d 0 to 14 after weaning, pigs fed a 1:1 blend of each protein source had better ADG (quadratic, P < .04) than those only fed SDAP. In conclusion, WPP can be used in combination with or as a total replacement for SDAP in diets for weanling pigs without reducing performance.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of diet on growth of steers weaned at approximately 100 vs 205 d of age. In Exp. 1, a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial experiment was conducted using 78 Angus crossbred cow-calf pairs. The factors examined were age at weaning (early, at 103+/-3 d [EW] vs normal, at 203+/-3 d [NW]), feeding strategy (ad libitum vs postweaning programmed intake), and dietary CP concentration (100 vs 120% of NRC [1984] recommended levels). Early-weaned calves had a greater (P < .001) ADG than NW calves from 103 to 203 d and reached market weight at 385 d vs 418 d for NW calves (P < .001). Likewise, steers offered feed for ad libitum consumption reached market weight at 394 d, compared with 409 d for programmed-intake steers (P < .05). In Exp. 2, 64 Angus crossbred steers were either weaned at 93+/-3 d and fed one of four diets, weaned at 210+/-3 d without access to creep feed, or weaned at 210+/-3 d with access to creep feed for 60 d prior to weaning. Early-weaned calves were heavier (P < .01) than NW calves at 210 d if fed either 100 or 90% concentrate diets, and they had greater (P < .001) backfat thickness at 210 d but no difference (P > .10) in longissimus muscle area compared to EW calves fed a 60% concentrate diet. At slaughter, 80 to 100% of steers on all treatments graded low Choice or higher. Feeding high-concentrate diets to EW beef calves accelerated growth rate and fat deposition early in the feeding period and may be a way to provide young cattle for a high-quality beef market.  相似文献

Decreasing dietary N inputs into beef cattle feeding operations could potentially decrease environmental concerns relating to air and water quality. Previous studies with sheep suggest that oscillating dietary CP concentrations may improve N use efficiency and thereby decrease dietary N requirements. Therefore, two studies were conducted to determine the effects of oscillating dietary CP concentrations on performance, acid-base balance, and manure characteristics of steers fed high-concentrate diets. Steers were fed to a constant backfat thickness in both studies. In the first trial, 92 steers (mean BW = 408 +/- 2.8 kg; four pens/treatment) were fed the following diets: 1) constant 12% CP, 2) constant 14% CP, and 3) 10 and 14% CP oscillated at 2-d intervals. Steer performance and carcass characteristics were measured. In the second trial, 27 steers were individually fed the same three experimental dietary regimens (nine steers/treatment). Animal performance, arterial acid-base balance, plasma metabolites, and fecal characteristics were measured. In both trials, steers fed the 14% CP diet tended (P < 0.10) to have greater ADG and gain:feed than steers fed the 12% CP diet. Steers fed the oscillating CP regimen had intermediate performance. In Trial 1, steers fed the 14% CP diet tended (P = 0.09) to have smaller longissimus area and higher quality grades than steers fed the oscillating CP regimen. Protein retentions (g/d) calculated from NRC (2000) equations were greater (P = 0.04) for steers fed the 14% CP diet than steers fed the 12% CP diet. Steers fed the oscillating CP regimen tended (P = 0.08) to have greater calculated protein retention (g/d) than steers fed the 12% CP diet. Steers fed the 14% CP diet had greater (P < 0.05) calculated urinary N excretion than steers fed the 12% CP or oscillating CP regimens. Venous plasma concentrations of urea N were greater (P < 0.001) in steers fed the 14% CP diet than in steers fed the 12% CP diet; steers fed the oscillating CP regimen were intermediate but fluctuated over days. Based on arterial blood gas concentrations, acid-base balance was not significantly affected by dietary CP regimen. Results of these trials suggest that the CP requirement of steers in these studies was greater than 12% of the diet DM, and/or that the degradable CP requirement was greater than 6.3% of diet DM. Eight wether lambs (mean BW = 28.8 kg) with ruminal and abomasal cannulas were assigned to either thermally neutral or high ambient temperature treatments. Within each temperature, lambs were randomly allotted to dietary treatments consisting of a basal diet (60% corn and 24% cottonseed hulls) either with (high; 11.4% CP) or without (control; 10.1% CP) added ruminal escape CP as fish meal and with (high) or without (control) 5% added ruminally inert fat in a 2 x 2 factorial treatment arrangement using a Latin square design. Lambs were fed 606 g of DM/d in each period, which consisted of a 10-d adjustment followed by 6 d of sample collection. High temperature increased (P less than .05) respiration rate, evaporative water loss, and rectal temperature. When compared with controls, lambs fed high escape CP retained more N when exposed to high temperatures (2.8 vs 3.6 g of N/d) and less N at neutral temperatures (3.3 vs 3.1 g of N/d; temperature x escape CP; P less than .05). Retention of N was greater (P less than .05) in lambs fed high than in those fed control fat (3.8 vs 2.7 g/d). Lambs fed high vs control escape CP had greater abomasal feed N flow (percentage of intake) when fed high-fat diets (77.3 vs 56.1%) but similar dietary N flow when fed control fat diets (55.8 vs 54.3%; fat x escape CP; P less than .05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

One hundred forty-four Angus male calves were assigned to one of five slaughter-age groups: 9, 12, 15, 18 and 24 mo of age. After weaning, one-half of the calves within slaughter age were castrated. One-half of the 12-, 15-, 18- and 24-mo age groups of each sex were further randomly allotted to a high-energy (HE) or low-energy (LE) finishing diet. Eight bulls and eight steers assigned to the 9-mo slaughter group were fed the HE diet only. Samples from the longissimus muscle (LM) were taken at the 12th rib for histological evaluations of fat deposits. Thin sections from the LM at the 11th rib were stained for lipid, collagen and elastin. Steaks from the LM were cooked and evaluated by a sensory panel and sheared by a Warner-Bratzler shear (WBS) device. The 9-10-11th rib sections were separated into muscle, fat and bone. Collagen, elastin and collagen solubility were determined chemically. Bulls had heavier carcasses, less fat and lower sensory scores for tenderness and juiciness than steers. Steers fed the HE diet had lower WBS values than bulls on either diet. Cooking losses were higher for bulls at 12, 18 and 24 mo than for steers. Histological evaluation showed that collagen content was higher for bulls than for steers and higher for cattle fed the LE diet than those fed the HE diet. Among cattle on the HE diet, the 9-mo cattle had more collagen than all older groups. Neither sex nor diet had an effect on elastin content shown by histological evaluation, but 12-mo cattle had the most elastin and the 15- and 18-mo cattle had the least elastin. Collagen content determined by chemical analysis was not affected by sex, diet or slaughter age. Correlation coefficients among histologically and chemically evaluated collagen and elastin and meat traits were too low to be of practical importance. The time-intensive histological techniques used in our study provided little additional information over that obtained from visually evaluated or chemically measured meat traits.  相似文献

In Exp. 1 two groups of 18 sows were used to evaluate the effects of supplemental dietary fat on sow and litter performance and milk production and composition. Sows were provided ad libitum access to either a corn-soybean meal (control) diet or a similar diet containing 10% tallow. Feed intake, ME intake, and milk yield did not differ (P > .10) between treatments. The percentage of solids in milk was greater (P < .05) for sows fed the tallow diet, due to an increase (P < .05) in the fat and ash content. Compared with percentages of fatty acids in milk of sows fed the control diet, the percentages of C10:0, C14:0, C16:0, C16:1, and C18:3 fatty acids were lower (P < .05) and the percentages of C18:0 and C18:1 fatty acids were higher in milk of sows fed tallow diets (P < .05). In Exp. 2, 30 sows were fed diets similar to those fed in Exp. 1, and the effects of a tallow diet on pig carcass composition at weaning were determined. Litter size was standardized to 10 pigs. There were no differences (P > .10) in ADFI of sows. Daily ME intake was greater for sows fed tallow than for control sows during wk 2 (P < .05), wk 3 (P < .10), and the entire lactation (P < .05) period. Litter weaning weight was greater (P < .05) for pigs from sows fed tallow diets than for pigs from control sows. Pigs from tallow-fed sows had greater carcass fat weight and fat percentages (P < .05) and lower water and protein percentages (P < .05). These data indicate that the increased fat content of milk from sows fed tallow diets resulted in an increased weight gain for litters nursing these sows. The composition of the increased weight gain is almost exclusively fat.  相似文献

One hundred sixty pigs were used in a 2 x 2 factorial design to compare the performance response to daily injection of porcine somatotropin (PST); (0 or 2 mg/d) in animals fed a 14% CP corn-soy diet (control, C) to those fed a diet with 10% added fat (F) and calorie:protein and lysine:protein ratios similar to that of the C diet. Treatments, assigned randomly to 20 pens (n = 5/treatment) of eight pigs each, were initiated at 90 kg body weight and continued for 28 d. Responses to PST and dietary fat were typical. These include improved gain and feed efficiency and decreased feed intake. The effects of dietary fat on intake and efficiency were accounted for largely by the difference in energy density of these diets. Across diets, PST treatment resulted in a 13% improvement in ADG (P less than .001), a 13% decrease in feed intake (P less than .0001) and a 22% improvement in efficiency (P less than .0001). Of particular interest were the additive (PST x diet interaction, P less than .2) effects of PST and dietary fat on gain in these animals. Pigs treated with PST that were fed the F diet had greater rates of gain than did PST-treated pigs fed the C diet (P less than .05). Treatment with PST increased ADG by 9% in pigs consuming the C diet vs 16% in pigs fed the F diet. One hundred fifty crossbred pigs (55 kg) were allotted by weight, sex and litter to a randomized complete-block design with five dietary treatments, six blocks per treatment and five pigs per pen with sex equalized across treatments. Corn-soybean meal-based diets (.65% lysine) with 0, .25 and .5 mg/kg cimaterol were fed, on an ad libitum basis, to pigs slaughtered at an average pen weight of 104 kg/pig. Drug withdrawal prior to slaughter was 1, 3 and 5 d for pigs fed cimaterol at .25 mg/kg and 1 d for those fed cimaterol at .5 mg/kg of diet. Dietary cimaterol level influenced (quadratic, P less than .01) average daily gain during the first 42 d on test; however, daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio were not affected (P greater than .1). Pigs fed .25 mg/kg cimaterol with a 1-d drug withdrawal had 6.8, 7.7 and 13.5% less 10th rib fat depth and 11.1, 6.1 and 13.3% less P2 fat depth than those subjected to either a 3- or 5-d drug withdrawal or those fed the 0 mg/kg cimaterol diet (control), respectively. Overall, pigs fed cimaterol had 7.9% larger longissimus muscle area and 2.6% more kilograms of muscle than pigs fed the control diet. Cimaterol fed at .5 mg/kg resulted in higher (P less than .05) Warner-Bratzler shear force values and altered the proportion of saturation in some long-chain fatty acids, although the total saturated:unsaturated fat ratio was not affected. Two experiments involving a total of 581 crossbred pigs weaned at 23 +/- 2 d of age evaluated 1) the efficacy of two diets that contained milk products during the initial 14 d postweaning and 2) the effect of coconut oil or soybean oil additions to swine starter diets. In Exp. 1, postweaning performance responses of pigs fed a control corn-soybean meal-dried whey (C-SBM-DW) diet without added fat were compared with those of pigs consuming diets that contained 3, 6, or 9% levels of coconut oil or degummed soybean oil. The results demonstrated no beneficial weight gain, feed intake, or gain-to-feed ratio response during the initial 14 d postweaning to either dietary oil source. From 15 to 35 d, gains increased to the 6% added fat level, but there was no effect on feed intake when the gain-to-feed ratio was improved to the 9% fat level. In Exp. 2, two diets containing milk products were fed during the initial 14-d postweaning period. The first diet contained corn, soybean meal, dried whey, dried skim milk, and fishmeal (high nutrient dense diet, HNDD), and the second was a C-SBM diet with 25% dried whey. During the period from 15 to 35 d, diets contained no added fat or a 6% level of coconut oil, soybean oil, or the 1:1 combination of each at 3%. The results demonstrated that for the postweaning period from 0 to 14 d pigs fed the HNDD had higher gains (P less than .01), feed intakes (P less than .01), and gain-to-feed ratios (P less than .01) than pigs fed the C-SBM-DW diet.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
