This study provides a quantitative account of fish predation by piscivorous birds in the temporarily open/closed East Kleinemonde Estuary and represents the first global attempt to simultaneously relate such consumption to production by a fish community in the same estuary. Cormorants and herons were the dominant predators and seasonal variations in the avifaunal community composition were noted. Based on comprehensive counts over three years, the piscivorous bird population was estimated to have consumed a maximum of 4 414?kg of fish in 1994, 2 400?kg in 1995/96 and 2 960?kg in 2004/05. In 1995/96 fish production in the East Kleinemonde Estuary (55.89?g m?2 a?1) was estimated at 9 780?kg and maximum bird predation amounted to 25% of annual fish production within the system over the same period, assuming that all birds counted on the estuary foraged there and that the diet of these birds comprised only fish. The above 1995/96 figures, together with an estimate of fish predation by the dominant piscivorous fish Lichia amia of 696?kg suggests that birds are probably the single most important natural predator of fishes within this estuary. An unusual mass invasion by marine Cape Cormorants Phalacrocorax capensis during July 1994 was responsible for large-scale predation of fish (2 155?kg) and resulted in the population of estuary-associated marine fishes declining from approximately 63 300 to about 18 600 individuals during the 1994 closed phase. Given that little or no marine fish recruitment was possible while the estuary mouth was closed, piscivorous birds are likely to have a higher predatory impact on populations of juvenile marine fishes in small temporarily closed estuaries than in larger permanently open systems.  相似文献

The species composition, seasonal abundance and spatial distribution of the fish fauna of the Mbashe estuary (8 km long) was determined by means of gill nets. During the 37 month survey period, 2908 fish (2319,8 kg), comprising 27 species, were caught. The family Mugilidae, representing 58,8% of the numbers and 57,4% of the biomass, predominated the catches. In terms of biomass M. cephalus, A. hololepidotus and P. commersonnii were the most important species. Seasonal patterns for 10 of the 27 species were observed. M. cephalus, A. hololepidotus and L. amia were more abundant in spring/summer, E machnata and V. buchanani in spring, P. commersonnii and L. tricuspidens increased numerically in winter and M. capensis in autumn, Johnius dussumieri and Valamugil cunnesius were rare in winter and summer, respectively. Largest catches were made in the middle reaches of the estuary followed by the upper and lower reaches, respectively.  相似文献

The residency and small-scale movements of early juveniles (<175 mm fork length) of three sparid fish species were examined in the shallow subtidal zone along a 500 m stretch of rocky coastline near Schoenmakerskop (Eastern Cape Province, South Africa). A total of 12 blacktail (Diplodus capensis), 12 zebra (Diplodus hottentotus) and six white musselcracker (Sparodon durbanensis) were tagged using visible implant elastomer (VIE) tags. Underwater observations in four shallow rocky subtidal gullies and adjacent areas were made using snorkeling gear on a total of 37 days spanning 13 field trips over spring low tide periods between January and August 2006. The VIE tagging method was well suited to individually tag small juvenile fish with minimum disturbance. In general, the degree of residency of juveniles in the shallow rocky subtidal zone was species specific and dependent on the size of individuals. Juvenile zebra displayed the highest degree of residency followed by white musselcracker and blacktail, with re-sightings recorded on 53%, 40% and 10% of observation days, respectively. The high degree of residency by early juvenile sparids renders them vulnerable to localized coastal perturbations and climate change.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the diet of Cape clawless otters Aonyx capensis feeding in the surf zone in False Bay, Western Cape Province, South Africa, were investigated by spraint (faecal) analysis. The most common prey species, during all seasons, was the Cape rock crab, Plagusia chabrus. The next most important prey species was the Cape rock lobster, Jasus lalandii, with the fish species Clinus superciliosus being equally important in winter. Other prey were fresh-water crabs, Potamonautes perlatus, octopus, Octopus granulatus, and 17 other species of fish, frogs and mammals. In winter and autumn the most important prey category was fish while in spring and summer, crustaceans were the most important. Diversity of prey was lowest in winter, increasing through the seasons from spring to autumn.  相似文献

One hundred and seventeen scrub hares, Lepus saxatilis, were examined for ixodid ticks in various regions of the Cape Province. They were infested with 18 tick species and the seasonal abundances of the immature stages of Amblyomma hebraeum, Amblyomma marmoreum, Hyalomma marginatum rufipes, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Rhipicephalus glabroscutatum and all stages of Rhipicephalus oculatus and the adults of a Rhipicephalus sp. (near R. oculatus) were determined. Seventy-two scrub hares on 3 farms in the Orange Free State harboured 10 ixodid tick species and the seasonal abundances of the immature stages of H. marginatum rufipes and Hyalomma truncatum and all stages of Rhipicephalus punctatus were determined. Thirty Cape hares, Lepus capensis, examined in the northern Cape Province harboured 5 tick species and the seasonal abundances of the immature stages of H. marginatum rufipes and H. truncatum were determined. Thirty-four Cape hares examined in the south-western Orange Free State carried 6 tick species and the seasonal abundance of immature H. marginatum rufipes was determined on these animals. Twenty-eight Smith's red rock rabbits examined on 2 farms in the south-western Orange Free State were infested with 7 tick species.  相似文献

The seasonal occurrence of Pomatomus saltatrix and Lichia amia juveniles in a permanently open (Knysna) and a periodically open (Swartvlei) estuary is described. P. saltatrix was caught only in Knysna from September to April. L. amia was found in both systems intermittently throughout the year. Small juveniles were most abundant from November to February in Knysna and from December to February in Swartvlei. Prey selected varies with size and species although there is some overlap. Behavioural and morphological differences are discussed in relation to prey selection.  相似文献

For the period 1987 to 1998, pelagic eggs of marine fishes were collected from shelf waters at Park Rynie on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast. The three most numerous eggs collected were those of the mackerel Scomber japonicus, the sardine Sardinops sagax and the East coast roundherring Etrumeus teres. Together they comprised 67 % of all eggs collected. At times single-species egg densities were high, the highest accurately recorded was 850 eggs/cubic metre for S. sagax. All three species were predominantly winter to spring spawners. Theseasonal pattern of sardine eggs at Park Rynie suggests that after entering KwaZulu-Natal waters in June, sardines remain until November or December of each year before returning south to eastern Cape waters. Spawning in the East coast roundherring began in June, peaked in October to November, and tailed off in January. The mackerel showed a similar pattern of spawning, beginning in June and ending in December.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the geographical distribution and habitats of Bulinus forskalii, the snail intermediate host of the conical fluke of equids, Gastrodiscus aegyptiacus as reflected by the 1209 samples in the database of the National Freshwater Snail Collection of South Africa. The 362 different loci on record represent an extensive distribution in KwaZulu-Natal Province, the Limpopo Province, the coastal areas of the Eastern Cape Province and the south-eastern part of the North West Province. Although it was recorded from all types of water-body represented in the database, the highest percentages of samples were recovered from dams (30.4%) and brooks (28.2%). The majority of samples came from perennial habitats (59.1%), 60.7% from habitats with standing water, 54.0% from habitats with clear water and 71.8% from habitats of which the water was described as fresh. The majority of samples (39.5%) were collected in habitats of which the substratum was recorded as muddy. The highest percentage of samples, by far (81.5%), was collected in habitats that fell within the mean yearly temperature interval ranging from 15-20 degrees C. An integrated decision tree constructed from the data in the database indicated that temperature and type of water-body played a decisive role in determining the presence of B. forskalii in a given area. The results of experimental exposure to miracidia of a local strain of both Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma mattheei in the laboratory indicated that a local strain of B. forskalii was incompatible with both these strains of parasite. Research to clarify the role of B. forskalii in the transmission of both Calicophoron microbothrium and G. aegyptiacus in South Africa, is recommended.  相似文献

The species composition, seasonal abundance and spatial distribution of the fish fauna of the Mtata estuary (8,5 km long) was determined by means of gill nets. Nine hundred and ninety fish (462,9 kg) comprising 26 species were caught of which M. cephalus (43,3%), A. hololepldotus (18,9%), P. commersonnii (7,9%), machnata (7,1%) and L. amia (5,45) were most abundant in terms of biomass. Mullet species constituted 48,3% of the biomass caught, representing 25,6% of the numbers. Seasonal patterns were ascertained for M. cephalus, M. capensis, V. buchanani, A. hololepidotus, P. commersonnii, P. kaakan, £ machnata, L. amia, J. dussumieri, T. vitrirostris and L. equula. A mean of 19,4 fish with a mean mass of 9,1 kg were caught per net per station. Numerically the highest catches were made in the upper reaches; gravimetrically in the middle reaches. Temperatures ranged from 10,5-25,5°C; a salinity gradient was usually present in all reaches; oxygen levels and turbidities were high.  相似文献

Black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) are an abundant mesopredator on farmlands (croplands and rangelands) across South Africa. Given their adaptability in a changing anthropogenic landscape, knowledge of spatial movements can provide important ecological information on the species. We captured, collared and monitored five black-backed jackals in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal to determine their home range and habitat use in farmlands. The 95% fixed kernel (95% FK) home range sizes were large, showing a marked seasonal variation in movement. One adult male dispersed 150?km over two seasons (winter and spring) and thereafter settled into a home range that it maintained. Transient home ranges of males and juveniles were larger than resident home ranges. The mean resident home ranges (95% FK) across seasons for adult males, adult female and juvenile males were 11.4 ± 4.3 km2, 5.6 ± 0.36?km2 and 2.15 ± 0.45?km2, respectively. The mean transient home ranges (95% FK) of all the seasons for adult and juvenile males were 1 181.93 ± 575.81 km2 and 104.27 ± 35.64?km2, respectively. Adult jackal preferred croplands in spring, summer and autumn but avoided croplands in winter. Variable habitat use and large home ranges in our study confirmed the species’ ability to adapt to agricultural areas.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the taxonomic status of the melanistic, girdled lizard, Cordylus cordylus niger, occurring in the Cape Peninsula and the Saldanha Bay area, South Africa, character variation among populations of the C. cordylus complex in the section of the Cape Province south of 32°3C latitude and west of 19°30' longitude was analysed. Variation for 92 external morphological characters at 54 localities was determined. Distinct patterns of interlocality variation were observed in only eight characters, but interestingly, these patterns were concordant in all eight cases. The observed patterns are interpreted as indicating that three phenotypic forms of the nominate species occur in the south-western Cape, namely a coastal melanistic form (= C. c. niger), occurring in insular and peninsular situations along the coast; a montane melanistic form occurring at relatively high altitudes along the western section of the Cape Fold Mountains; and the typical form (= C. c. cordylus), occurring commonly along the coastal lowlands, but also further inland at some places.  相似文献

A model is proposed for the evolution of three morphotypes of the girdled lizard Cordylus cordylus (Linnaeus) in the south-western Cape. The available data are interpreted as indicating that a vicariant splitting of a warm-adapted ancestral population during the last glacial period occurred. Differential evolution of the two daughter populations in response to different environmental pressures resulted. One of the daughter populations remaining in the coastal lowlands to the west of the Cape Fold Mountains, became cold-adapted, an event which was followed by a rapid range expansion. The other daughter population to the south and east of the Cape Fold Mountains apparently experienced less severe climatic conditions, maintained a larger population size, and for these reasons remained warm-adapted. During the subsequent warmer, interglacial period the now cold-adapted daughter population was again fragmented into two populations. Of these, one is presently found along the south-western coast and the other along the higher peaks of the western section of the Cape Fold Mountains. On the other hand the amelioration of the climate during the interglacial allowed the warm-adapted daughter population to the south and east to expand its range, eventually penetrating into the areas formerly occupied by the cold-adapted populations. Subsequently zones of secondary contact were established. In the area under discussion similar patterns of contraction and expansion can be observed in other closely related species. Our data support the turnover-pulse hypothesis of Vrba (1985)  相似文献

Stomach content analyses were performed on eight carnivorous fish from four eastern Cape estuaries. Dietary importance was assessed by using three unrelated methods and by combining them to determine the index of relative importance of each food item. It was attempted to relate the percentage of fish with food in the stomach and the feeding intensity to the abundance of the fish in a particular estuary. In general fish consumed more food in estuaries where they were more abundant. The few exceptions that occurred could indicate that a particular estuary was selected for purposes other than food availability eg. Tachysurus feliceps in the Krom estuary for spawning grounds or because of inter- or intraspecific competition for food eg. T. feliceps and Monodactylus falciform is in the Krom and Argyrosomus hololepidotus in the Gamtoos and Sundays estuaries. Similarity analyses showed resource partitioning. Predators such as A. hololepidotus, Elops machnata, Lichia amia and Platycephalus indicus preferred teleost fishes such as mullets and Gilchristella aestuarius, whereas the stomach content of Pomadasys commersonnl, T. feliceps and M. falciform is were dominated by Crustacea, particularly Upogebia africana. Most estuarine predators showed a diverse prey selection, but the food web was characterized by a high energy flow per pathway.  相似文献

Argyrosomus hololepidotus (kob) is a top predator in the shallow marine environment of the south-eastern Cape. There is considerable change in prey taken over the size range of predators examined (256-1701 mm). Young A. hololepidotus are planktivorous taking swarming mysids, but as they grow they become piscivorous, feeding on both pelagic and demersal prey associated with soft sediments. The pelagic cephalopod Loligo reynaudi is also taken by large specimens. Prey selection varies with locality and time of year. A field experiment in which the prey were compared with fish caught in a small-mesh net revealed a preference for some slow-moving demersal species. The length distributions of dominant prey species are given and these clearly show that larger prey are preferred by larger predators.  相似文献

Of 10 246 red crabs tagged between 1979 and 1984 on the continental slope of Namibia, a total of 1 604 were recaptured by commercial fishermen. Three tagging methods were tested. The most effective method was by inserting the tag through the epimeral suture. Though tagged crabs were released over a range of depths (from 400 to 900 m), the distances that they covered while at large were found to be unrelated to the depth at which they were released. No significant differences were found for distances moved by males compared to immature females, but differences (P< 0,01) did indicate that large males (≥105 mm carapace width (CW)) move farther than small males. Mature females moved significantly farther (P< 0,001) than the other crabs and over 32% moved > 100 km. The farthest distance covered by a single crab was 380 km. No seasonal trends regarding distances or direction moved were noted for either sex or size groupings examined. Mature females did show a tendency, although unrelated to season, to move northwards. Movements of crabs by depth suggested that, although crabs of all sizes and sexes move freely between depths, small males (< 100 mm CW) do tend to favour deeper water than larger males and vice versa. Female crabs tend to favour shallow depths and, of those tagged at 800 and 900 m, over 60% were recaptured shallower than 700 m. Based on the results of this study, it is considered that the movement patterns of G. maritae could best be described as nomadic. A possible reason for the fact that mature females display different movement patterns compared to other crabs in the population is discussed, as are possible implications to the fishery of crab movements between Namibia and Angola  相似文献

The length/frequency distribution, length/mass relationship, seasonal occurrence, growth and diet of Sparodon durbanensis from tidal pools in the Eastern Cape was investigated over a two-year period. The fish were predominantly small (mean length of 53 mm TL) with the smallest specimens being found in summer. Juveniles were found to be omnivorous, consuming algae, crustaceans and polychaetes, although, with the acquisition of adult dentition (ie. crushing molars), hard-shelled molluscs became important in the diet.  相似文献

The feeding habits of the giant clingfish Chorisochismus dentex in the eastern Cape Province, South Africa, are described. Juveniles share a diet of small crustaceans with numerous other fish species but adults feed on sea urchins as well as on a rarely used resource — limpets (Patellidae) which are firmly attached to rocks in the intertidal zone. The limpets are removed by levering with the large upper incisiform teeth. Undigested shells are eliminated whole encased in mucous capsules.  相似文献

Fifteen adult nembwe Serranochromis robustus (Günther, 1864) were tagged with radio transmitters in the Zambezi River, Namibia, from 4–15 November 2000 to record behaviour and outline the implications for fisheries management. The fish were tracked on average every 3.7 days until 18 May 2001. They stayed within relatively small home ranges, with a 95% probability of localization within an average area of 184 563m2. The fish utilized a mean river stretch of 1330 m (range = 24– 3787). Nembwe were recorded in a variety of habitats, and the individual variation in movements and habitat use was substantial. All the fish were recorded in the mainstream of the river, but 62% of the fish were recorded in one or more additional main habitat types. During rising and high water, 67% and 71% of the fish, respectively, were recorded in adjacent temporary flooded areas during some or all tracking surveys, but did not undertake long-distance migrations onto the floodplains. It is concluded that although staying within relatively small home ranges, nembwe appears as a species with a variable and flexible habitat utilization.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the invasive, omnivorous Clarias garipienus is capable of rapid invasions and long-term persistence in recently inhabited freshwater systems. To test this hypothesis, the life history of the established, extralimital Darlington Dam (33°10’31”S, 25°09’13”E) population was investigated. By counting post-fluorescent mark increments on otoliths from 21 chemically tagged wild fish recaptured 244–537 days later, the deposition of growth zones, comprising alternating opaque and translucent bands, was validated as annual. Examination of sectioned otoliths from 175 fish revealed that the oldest fish, two males of 840 and 1074 mm total length (TL), were 25 years old – 10 years older than previously described for any C. gariepinus population. The oldest female was 885 mm TL and 21 years old. Length-at-age was subsequently described using the von Bertalanffy growth model. Combined-sex growth was best described as Lt = 931.7(1– exp(–0.15(t+2.43))) mm TL. Total mortality (Z) was calculated using catch curve analysis and the Chapman & Robson estimator to be 0.35/yr. The presence of specimens 15 years and older indicates that these fish established quicklyand supports the finding that mortality rates are low, which, in turn, suggests likely long-term population persistence.  相似文献
