A study was made to determine the effects of grazing to a height of 1 in. when the swards reached heights of 3 and 9 in. on the dry matter production, LAI, tillering and rate of leaf production of new and old tillers in the spring–summer and autumn–winter seasons of 3 pasture species growing in association with white and red clovers. In both seasons the herbage yield under 9–1 management was higher than that under 3–1 and was significantly greater in the spring-summer season. Differences in DM production between cocksfoot, tall fescue and Ariki ryegrass failed to reach significance.
Light utilization under the 2 management systems was considered to be inefficient. In the autumn-winter period there was a linear relationship between the LAI and DM production in all treatments.
The rate of leaf production per tiller was significantly higher in cocksfoot than in ryegrass and tall fescue in both seasons.
New tillers had a significantly higher rate of leaf production than old tillers in the spring-summer period, but not in autumn-winter. The numbers of grass tillers and rooted nodes of clover were significantly higher under 3–1 than under 9–1 and were influenced by season.  相似文献

Four experiments were established in 1981–84 to investigate the effect of defoliation treatments on white clover varieties when grown with S23 perennial ryegrass. Treatments included a cutting only regime, as used in National List trials, and grazing systems simulating as near as possible those used on farms.
Differential effects of cutting and continuous sheep stocking on white clover varieties, together with significant variety × defoliation interactions, illustrated the importance of the grazing animal in the evaluation of white clover. Differential effects of cattle and sheep grazing were also evident. Cattle grazing was less detrimental to white clover than was sheep grazing, i.e. cattle were not selective, and less stolon was removed. In general, with both cattle and sheep grazing the larger the clover leaf size the greater the loss in stolons, which in turn decreased persistency. The results illustrate how alternating cutting, sheep grazing and cattle grazing managements can be used to maintain optimum clover/grass balance.
Successful clover/grass swards depend on the retention of clover, yet avoiding clover dominance. The difference in N transfer between clover varieties, especially those within the same leaf category, and the extra grass produced without fertilizer N, emphasized the importance of varietal choice. Breeding programmes have been concerned with the selection of larger-leaved, long-petioled varieties for growing in competition with grass in the presence of fertilizer N. However, the present results showed that, under continuous sheep stocking, increase in leaf size does not increase clover yield or persistency.
The results presented emphasize the importance of the grazing animal in the evaluation of white clover varieties and indicate that yield of clover dry matter should not be the major criterion for selection of varieties for farm systems.  相似文献

Three-year leys of cocksfoot/white clover and cocksfoot alone were dressed with 0, 35, 105 and 210 lb. N per acre every year to provide information on the effect of clover and N on annual production.
White clover contributed 40% of the dry-matter yield but its presence was responsible for 77% of this yield where no N was used: it was responsible for less than 8%, and contributed 5%, where 210 lb. N per acre was applied annually, lt was estimated that grass alone receiving 160 lb. N per acre would yield as much dry matter as a mixed sward receiving none.
Clover had the indirect effect of raising yield of nitrogen in the companion grass by 60 lb. per acre per year. A maximum of l06 lb. was recorded in 1958.
The response of the tnixed sward averaged 10 lb. of dry matter per lb. N. Prevailing economic circumstances will determine if this level is satisfactory in practice.
The recovery of N by grass alone varied from 54% at the lowest level of N to 80% at the highest. On mixed swards apparent recovery was negative or low: N was to a large extent only replacing the effect of clover which was suppressed by its use.
Factors influencing response and the difference between that obtained under experimental and practical conditions are discussed.
The use of N to produce out-of-season grass may give good response, but may cause a reduction in clover contribution.  相似文献

In an experiment of four years duration, the competitive relationships between three cultivars of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) and ten cultivars of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) were studied under a N fertilizer regime of 200–240 kg ha-1 a-1. The clover cultivars were selected to embrace the various leaf sizes from medium large to small and the ryegrasses included early, mid-season and late cultivars with a known range of persistence.
During the experiment there was a progressive decline in the contribution of clover, though the different characteristics of each of the clover and ryegrass cultivars produced substantial deviations from the average trend. The clover cultivar Kersey was significantly more aggressive towards the companion grass cultivars than either S100 or S184. It produced consistently greater clover contribution to total yield than the other two cultivars and significantly depressed the yields of some of the companion grass cultivars. There was evidence that compatibility of the ryegrass cultivars with clover was inversely related to persistence; the non-persistent ryegrass cultivars S321 and Presto consistently produced lower grass yields than the more persistent cultivars and consequently permitted greater clover contribution. In the second and third years yield substitution effects between clover and grass components substantially reduced differences in the total grass-clover yield.
The interactions revealed in the experiment showed that both ryegrass and clover cultivars have the potential to influence each other when in association although, with minor exceptions, total annual yields were similar for all grass and clover mixtures at the moderately high level of N applied.  相似文献

Three diploid red clover cultivars—Sabtoron, Violetta and Essex—and three tetraploid, Hungaropoly, Teroba and Red Head, were sown separately in pure culture and with each of three companion grasses: timothy (Aberystwyth S48), tall fescue (Aberystwyth S170) and perennial ryegrass (Aberystwyth S24).
The effects of fertilizer N on yield and on clover/grass ratio over a 2-year period (seventh and eighth harvest years) subsequent to 6 harvest years during which no N fertilizer was applied were investigated. The data for productivity and persistence have already been published (McBratney, 1981; 1984).
Application of fertilizer N increased DM yields in the eighth year. In this year, the highest yield, 11·9t ha-1, averaged over the six clover cultivars, was given in association with tall fescue. Tall fescue contributed 90% of this yield. Clover content continued to decrease in all swards but the decrease was greatest in the swards receiving fertilizer N. The yield of clover DM averaged over the six cultivars under N treatment declined from 5·6t ha-1 in the seventh year to only 0·4t ha-1 in the eighth year.
The results from this trial demonstrate the potential of red clover sown either pure or in mixture with a suitable perennial grass, to maintain high output of quality herbage over a 6-year period without the aid of fertilizer N. They further demonstrate that following decline in red clover content, both herbage yield and quality may be restored by the application of N fertilizer, particularly where the clover was seeded with a highly productive companion grass.  相似文献

Replicated plots of Hungaropoly red clover were sown on a sterilized area in May 1975 alone (seed rate 11 kg ha-1) or with one of six cultivars of perennial ryegrass (seed rate 3·5 kg ha-1) viz. Cropper and S24 (early heading), Barlenna and Hora (medium heading) and Melle and Perma (late heading). In 1976 and 1977 primary growth was cut at one of four dates ranging from mid-May to mid-June and thereafter plots were harvested twice each year.
Varying the time of first cut did not have a significant effect on total dry matter (DM) yield in either year despite differences in means of cutting treatments on annual red clover yields of the order of 6–9%.
In some companion grass treatments total DM yield in 1976 was increased and total red clover yield and percentage red clover contribution were reduced relative to swards sown only with red clover. In 1977 a similar but non-significant trend was found. Swards containing early ryegrasses had higher total herbage DM yields but lower red clover yields and contents than all other swards at the first harvest in both years.
Delay in date of taking the first harvest in 1976 reduced DM digestibility in the first cut and increased it in the second in both years.
It is suggested that by cutting early and increasing the number of harvests from three to four per year, differences in the content of red clover between the first and second cut might be reduced, and it is concluded that more benefit is derived from red clover when medium or late heading ryegrasses are used as companion grasses.  相似文献

The yields of two varieties of lucerne sown alone and in associalion with each of three grasses were compared with similar red clover/grass mixtures over the period 1953–56 under two levels of nitrogenous and potassic fertilizers and two cutting treatments. The main object of the experiment was to gain a wider knowledge of the productivity and chemical composition of lucerne sown alone, and in mixtures, under relatively high rainfall conditions.
The highest production was obtained from Du Puits and its mixtures, which exceeded Grimm and S 123 red clover mixtures. The yields of the lucerne/grass mixtures were not significantly better than those of the pure sown lucerne. Under the most favourable conditions for lucerne, Du Puits eliminated practically all the sown grasses, viz., S 23 ryegrass, S 51 timothy and S 215 meadow fescue.
The application of nitrogen encouraged the growth of the grasses, often at the expense of the legume, especially the slower growing Grimm and S 123. The effect on Du Puits was less marked, but in no case was there a stibstantial increase in actual legume yield. Increasing the level of potassium, although not immediately affecting the yield, proved beneficial to lucerne survival in the later years. The protein yield from the best lucerne plots was found to be double that from pure grass swards heavily fertilized with nitrogen.
Three cuts of lucerne in the first two harvest years had a disastrous effecl on the carry-over of lucerne from the second to the third year. Both varieties of lucerne and their mixtures behaved in a similar fashion, although S 123 red clover appeared to be indifferent to these conditions. It is suggested that the cause of this was the unfavourable weather experienced in 1954.  相似文献

Three small plot experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of species of grass and forbs, defoliation regime, inclusion of white clover and forb blend on the herbage dry matter (DM) yield, botanical composition and mineral content of swards managed with zero fertilizer inputs. The results of all three experiments were characterized by decline in herbage production and large variations in treatment effects over the harvest period.
When sown singly with a standard grass mix the species that competed well with grasses and produced annual forb herbage yields greater than 20 t DM ha−1 were black knapweed, oxeye daisy, ribwort plantain, burnet, birdsfoot trefoil, chicory, kidney vetch, red clover and white clover. When sown singly with a standard forb mix, grass species significantly affected the annual yield of total ( P <005). grass ( P <001) and forb ( P <0.001) herbage. The species that most surpressed the yield of forbs were common bent, Yorkshire fog and perennial ryegrass. Those that allowed for the highest yield of forbs were rough meadow grass, sweet vernal grass and crested dogstail. Averaged over the three harvest years, defoliation regime did not significantly affect herbage production, but the inclusion of white clover in mixtures increased the yield of grasses ( P <0.01) The use of rosette-type forb blends increased forb yield ( P <0.01), compared with erect-type blends.
The effects of treatments on herbage N and mineral contents and yields were inconsistent. However, there was some evidence to support the view that the presence of forb species in swards can result in greater contents of minerals in herbage, compared with grass-only swards.  相似文献

Seven species or varieties of grass, and a mixture of 3 of them, were sown in pure swards and treated with 4 levels of nitrogenous fertilizer (0,17·5, 35 and 70lb N per acre per cut). Each species, and the mixture, was also sown with white clover. The experiment was cut 4 or 5 times per year. The effect of fertilizer on the yield of each grass was compared with the effect of clover on the yield of the grass/clover swards. Mean annual yields showed an approximately linear response to N; there was a small but significant fall in response to the highest level of N. Response among the species ranged from 20 to 30 Ib of dry matter per Ib N applied for the intermediate level of fertilizer and from 14 to 23 Ib for the final increment of fertilizer.
S37 cocksfoot, S48 timothy, S24 ryegrass, and a mixture of these grasses, were high yielding and responded well to fertilizer N; Irish ryegrass and Agrostis tenuis were less productive and gave poorer responses to N. S215 meadow fescue and S23 ryegrass were intermediate in yield and response.
There were no significant differences between the annual yields of the 8 grass/clover mixtures; the yields of the grass and clover components of each mixture were inversely related. The effect of clover on the yield of the grass/clover mixtures was estimated to be equivalent to the effect of an annual application of 205 lb N per acre to Agrostis tenuis and 120 lb N to S48 timothy. The fluctuations in annual yields were greater with grass/ clover mixtures than with grass swards receiving N.
The yields of grasses when sown with clover were in similar order to their yields when sown pure; but whereas the latter tended to fall from year to year, the yields of the grass components of mixtures (except Irish ryegrass) did not.  相似文献

Three diploid—Sabtoron, Violetta and Essex—and three tetraploid—Hungaropoly, Teroba and Red Head—red clover cultivars were sown alone and with each of three companion grasses—timothy (S48), tall fescue (S170) and perennial ryegrass (S24). The productivity and persistence of the red clover cultivars were compared. Results obtained over the first four harvest years were presented in an earlier paper (McBratney, 1981) and this paper presents results from the fifth and sixth (final) harvest years.
The low yield obtained in the fifth and sixth year from Essex under each seeding treatment indicated a deterioration in its persistency or vigour or both. In the fifth year the remaining two diploids, Sabtoron and Violetta, were as highly productive and persistent as the three tetraploids but in the sixth year the decrease in productivity was greater in the diploids than in the tetraploids. In the fifth year Teroba, the highest yielder, produced 9 8 t total DM ha−1 over all seeding treatments of which 73% was clover DM; in the sixth year Teroba was again highest yielding, producing 9.3 t ha−l with 67% clover content. Tall fescue was the most consistent companion grass in the mixed swards, in the sixth year contributing 53% grass DM to the total 8 8 t DM harvested ha−1.
The trial demonstrates the potential of a number of red clover cultivars grown either pure or with a suitable perennial grass to achieve and maintain a high output of herbage of good quality over a period of 6 years without any application of fertilizer N. The practical agricultural implications of using red clover are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of defoliation interval on growth patterns of contrasting perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)–white clover (Trifolium repens) mixtures was studied. The dynamics of increase in leaf area, light interception and dry-matter (DM) production were measured within successive regrowth periods. No N fertilizer was applied. During 1995 six mixtures were cut eight (F1) or six times (F2) at a stubble height of 5 cm. The stubble composition was stable throughout the growing season: after harvest about 50 g DM m?2 (with a white clover proportion of 0·52) was present with a leaf area index (LAI) of 0·5 (0·38 white clover). The percentage of intercepted radiation after cutting was 20–30% and increased during 3 weeks to about 95%. The relative growth rate of leaf area and DM was higher for white clover than for perennial ryegrass, with the proportion of clover in the LAI and DM increasing during each regrowth period. Mixtures with large-leaved white clover cv. Alice had a lower initial clover content after harvest, but a more rapid increase in clover LAI and DM than mixtures with the smaller leaved cvs Gwenda or Retor. Alice had the highest total and clover LAI and DM at harvest. Cutting frequency affected the change in white clover–perennial ryegrass ratio during regrowth. This was significantly higher in mixtures with Alice than in mixtures with Gwenda, but only under less frequent cutting (F2). In spring there was a mean white clover proportion of about 0·55 in the LAI and 0·45 in the total harvested DM. In summer the white clover proportion in the LAI and DM increased to 0·70–0·75. There was a decline during autumn, especially in F2 and in the mixtures with the small-leaved white clover cv. Gwenda and the medium-leaved cv. Retor. In contrast, grass DM and LAI declined from spring to summer. The decline in clover LAI in autumn was similar in Alice and Gwenda at frequent cutting (F1), but stronger in Gwenda in F2. Retor had the lowest clover specific leaf area (SLA). The SLA values of Alice and Gwenda were similar, SLA being similar between cutting treatments. No differences were found for leaf weight ratio (LWR) among the three white clover cultivars or between the grass cultivars, and LWR was not affected by cutting treatment. Defoliation interval had limited effects on the growth pattern and leaf characteristics of perennial ryegrass–white clover mixtures.  相似文献

Six red clover cultivars, three diploid—Essex, Sabtoron and Violetta—and three tetraploid— Teroba, Red Head and Hungaropoly—were sown alone and with each of three companion grasses—timothy (S48), tall fescue (S170) and perennial ryegrass (S24). The productivity and persistency of the red clover cultivars were compared over 4 years. Dry matter (DM) yield, DM digestibility and the crude protein (CP) concentration were assessed and botanical analyses conducted on herbage samples from each treatment at each of three harvests per annum. Annual fertilizer application consisted of 165 kg P and 312 kg K ha-1. Comparing clover cultivars alone Essex was significantly less productive and less persistent than the other five cultivars. Yield and persistency of the five other cultivars did not differ markedly within years with the exception that the diploids were significantly less productive than the tetraploids in the fourth year. Over all 4 years mean annual total DM and clover DM yields of the five cultivars were between 12·2 and 13·2 t ha-1 and between 9·2 (79·2% of total DM yield) and 10·2 (83·2%) t ha-1 respectively, and differences were not significant. Up to the end of the third year there was little or no advantage gained by the inclusion of a companion grass, annual total DM yields being between 11·2 and 14·2 t ha-1 for clover alone and between 10·2 and 14·2 t ha-1 for clover-grass mixtures. In the fourth year there was an overall tendency for the yield of the clover alone to be lower, between 7·2 and 12·2 t ha-1, than that of the clover-grass mixture, between 8·2 and 13·2 t ha-1, and this was more pronounced with the diploid than with the tetraploid clover cultivars. Sown with companion grasses, Essex and Hungaropoly were lower in yield and in contribution than the other cultivars over the 4 years. The influence of the companion grass on total dry matter yield showed that the contribution of timothy was low relative to that made by tall fescue and perennial ryegrass. Perennial ryegrass made the most varied contribution from year to year. Tall fescue was the most consistent contributor with all clover cultivars and at the end of 4 years both yield and clover-grass balance had not changed materially. No pronounced differences in DM digestibility were evident between treatments. Crude protein concentration of the pure clover was similar to that of the clover-timothy treatments and both would appear to be superior to either the clover-perennial ryegrass or clover-tall fescue mixtures. It is considered that red clover dominant swards are suitable for use under a cutting regime and can provide high yields of DM at a low cost for up to 4 years. Such swards are self-sufficient in N and in addition soil N accumulation can be exploited in the production of succeeding crops.  相似文献

Seven species or varieties of grass, and a mixture of 3 of them, were sown in pure swards, treated with 4 levels of nitro-chalk (0, 17·5, 35, and 70 Ib N/ac/cut) and cut 4 or 5 times each year. Each species and the mixture were also sown with white clover, and the effect of fertilizer N on the yield of N in each grass was compared with the effect of clover on the yield of N harvested from the grass/clover swards.
The regression line for response in yield of N with increasing levels of fertilizer N showed slight, but significant, upward curvature. The grasses differed in their uptake of N from the soil, S37 cocksfoot and S48 timothy showing relatively high uptakes, and the ability of each grass to take up fertilizer N was usually related to its uptake of N from the soil. Differences in the yield of dry matter between the species, at a similar level of N, are discussed, and it was concluded that perennial ryegrasses were most efficient and Agrostis tenuis was least efficient in using the N taken up in the production of DM.
In general, there were no significant differences between the yields of N of the grass/clover mixtures; the N yields of the grass components were significantly different and tended to be inversely related to the N yields of clover.
Grasses which gave high yields of N with fertilizer were also high yielding when grown in association with clover. Pure grass swards required more than 200 Ib fertilizer N/ac/yr in order to yield the same amount of N as the grass/clover swards. The amount of N estimated to have been derived by grass from clover (indirect effect of clover) increased each year; it was highest with S37 cocksfoot and lowest with Irish perennial ryegrass, averaging 46 and 23 Ib N/ac/yr, respectively.  相似文献

The mean yields of 4 varieties of lucerne were compared under 5 methods of growing: broadcast with and without grass; drills 2 ft apart; alternate lucerne/grass drills 1 ft apart; spaced plants. One cut was harvested in the sowing year and 3 cuts a year for the next 3 years.
The alternate lucerne/grass drills yielded 20% less dry matter than the comparable broadcast plots. Broadcasting and sowing in alternate drills had the same effect on the pattern of lucerne/grass competition. The meadow fescue companion produced its highest yield at the first cut and there was a marked drop during each year and from year to year. There was little evidence of nitrogen transfer from the lucerne to the grass.  相似文献

In a range of perennial ryegrass/white clover swards, variation in the surface heights of the grass and clover components, the rates of increase of these surface heights and the specific leaf areas (SLAs) of ryegrass and white clover were described for 1 year. The swards were of an early- or late-flowering (Aurora or Melle respectively) perennial ryegrass variety growing with either a small- or a medium-leaved (Kent or Milkanova) white clover and were either continuously stocked by sheep or continuously stocked apart from a rest period in April-May (Aurora) or May-June (Melle).
The surface heights of grass and clover were not affected by the variety of their companion species, and the surface heights of the two clover varieties were similar. The grass was always taller than the clover, although the magnitude of the difference between the species varied with time of year and the timing of the rest period.
Before the summer solstice the rate of increase in height of grass was greater than that of clover except at cool temperatures (5°C) and warm temperatures (16°C), and in the unrested Melle sward. After the solstice the rates of increase in height, particularly of clover, were lower than the rates seen at similar temperatures before the solstice.
Overall, the SLAs of both clover varieties were greater than those of ryegrass when grown with Aurora but not when grown with Melle, and the SLAs of both species increased during the year. By October the SLAs of both grass varieties were less than those of their companion clovers.
The results are discussed in relation to their implications for the species composition of the swards.  相似文献

Comparative herbage characteristics and sheep production (ewes and lambs until weaning and lambs thereafter) from swards of Aurora (very early flowering), Frances (early flowering), Talbot (intermediate flowering) and Melle (late flowering) varieties of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) were studied under a continuous variable stocking management based on sward surface height guidelines. The varieties were assessed as grass-only (215 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) and grass/clover (83 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) pastures.
Over 2 years (1985-86) total annual lamb production per hectare from grass-only swards of Aurora was 19% more than that from Frances despite similar herbage productivity. Differences between the varieties in lamb output were more pronounced as grass/clover swards, with Aurora producing 29 and 18% more lamb than Melle and Talbot respectively and with Frances also giving 16% more than Melle. Overall lamb production from grass/clover swards was 10% more than that from the grass-only pastures, mainly due to 69% advantage in individual lamb growth rates after weaning. Herbage organic matter digestibility, during the post-weaning period, was higher on grass/clover than on grass-only swards, and similarly with Aurora versus the other varieties. Under a frequent cut simulated grazing regime the relative herbage productivity of the four varieties differed, with Aurora 13% less productive than Frances.
The results are discussed in relation to the limitations of assessing performance under cutting, and the significance of the interaction in animal productivity between the two sward types.  相似文献

2011~2012年,选用郑单958为供试材料,以传统栽培模式为对照(CK),研究超高产栽培条件下春玉米的冠层结构。结果表明,超高产条件下春玉米产量及有效穗数均显著高于对照;玉米在超高产栽培条件下,其群体叶面积指数(LAI)均高于传统栽培模式(CK),且LAI最大值的持续天数比CK长。棒三叶及棒三叶以上叶增加幅度明显,与CK均达到显著水平;超高产栽培条件下玉米叶倾角明显小于CK,叶向值增大,群体受光态势较好。叶片光合速率(Pn)均随生育时期的推移而不断降低,在全生育期超高产栽培条件均高于CK,并且在大喇叭口期差异显著;整个生育时期超高产栽培条件的光合势均高于CK。超高产栽培LAI持续天数长,叶倾角小,叶向值大,进而改善玉米群体受光态势,提高叶片光合能力,具有高光效的冠层结构。  相似文献

A field experiment was established in May 1986 in which four white-clover populations originating in Switzerland, and a bred variety, Menna, were grown in binary mixtures with their 'co-existing' perennial ryegrasses and three other bred ryegrasses— Aurora, Talbot and Melle. The productivity of both components of the mixtures was measured by cutting samples in October 1986 (after establishment) and on five occasions during the growing season in 1987, Substantial differences were observed between clover yields in different mixtures, and the yield ranking of clover was found to vary with companion grass. It was concluded that the interaction between grass and clover populations originated at an early stage in sward development, being evident in both the 1986 establishment cut and the spring cut of the following year. Two diets were compared: perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) silage and perennial ryegrass/white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) silage, in each case fed ad libitum , without supplementation, to lactating dairy cows. The comparison was made with silages cut on each of four dates. The crops were wilted to a dry matter content of at least 256g kg-1 and no additives were used.
The grass/clover silages were well preserved at all four cuts. The grass was well preserved at three cuts, but, at a May cut, the grass silage was less well preserved and less digestible than the grass/clover silage. When the May silages were fed, milk yield was higher with grass/clover than with grass. Taking the experiment as a whole, however, milk yield and composition were similar on the two diets. The grass/clover silages had a lower proportion of cell wall and their intake by dairy cows was consistently higher than that of the grass silages.
It is concluded that perennial ryegrass/white clover crops can be ensiled successfully and fed successfully, with high intake, to lactating dairy cows, but it should not be assumed that cows will give more milk than when fed equivalent all-grass silage.  相似文献
