Summary Genotypic differences for growth stage dependent expression of partial resistance to barley powdery mildew have been identified on the basis of two components of resistance in the glasshouse and the pattern of epidemic development in the field.Differences for infection frequency and proportion of sporulating colonies were highly significant between the 16 genotypes investigated at four stages of plant development in the glasshouse. Both resistance components were significantly correlated mutually (r=0.73 to 0.86) and with the infection level on leaves developed at comparable growth stages in the field (r=0.52 to 0.73). The infection level of seedlings in the glasshouse was significantly correlated with the infection level of the leaves of the first until the third node in the field (r=0.70 to 0.73). Adult plant resistance was predominantly expressed at the uppermost leaf. A spontaneous mutant with apetalous flowers was obtained from a hybrid progeny in Brassica napus. The result of genetic analysis showed that the apetalous character was controlled by only one gene locus, petalous flower exhibited incomplete dominance over apetalous flower and that its expression was not affected by cytoplasmic factors. Sixteen agronomically important characteristics of the apetalous line Apet33-10 were compared with those of its petalled near-isogenic line Pet33-10. Results from 4 years of tests indicated that there was no difference between Apet33-10 and Pet33-10 in all tested agronomic characteristics, except for the pod number of main inflorescence and second-order branches at low sclerotinia disease incidence. The Sclerotinia sclerotiorum disease severity index of Apet33-10 was significantly lower than that of Pet33-10, and correspondingly, the plot yield of Apet33-10 was increased obviously in comparison to that of Pet33-10 if sclerotinia disease was serious. The pod number of main inflorescence of Apet33-10 was significantly lower than that of Pet33-10. On the other hand, the pod number of second-order branches of Apet33-10 was significantly higher than that of Pet33-10, hence no overage difference of the pod number per plant was observed between the two lines.  相似文献

The legume pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera, is one of the most devastating pests of pigeonpea. High levels of resistance to pod borer have been reported in the wild relative of pigeonpea, Cajanus scarabaeoides. Trichomes (their type, orientation, density and length) and their exudates on pod wall surface play an important role in the ovipositional behavior and host selection process of insect herbivores. They have been widely exploited as an insect defense mechanism in number of crops. In the present investigation, inheritance of resistance to pod borer and different types of trichomes (A, B, C and D) on the pod wall surface in the parents (C. cajan and C. scarabaeoides) and their F1, F2, BC1 (C. cajan × F1), and F3 generations has been studied. Trichomes of the wild parents (high density of the non-glandular trichomes C and D, and glandular trichome B and low density of glandular trichome A) were dominant over the trichome features of C. cajan. A single dominant gene as indicated by the segregation patterns individually will govern each trait in the F2 and backcross generation. Segregation ratio of 3 (resistant): 1 (susceptible) for resistance to pod borer in the F2 generation under field conditions was corroborated with a ratio of 1:1 in the backcross generation, and the ratio of 1 non-segregating (resistant): 2 segregating (3 resistant: 1 susceptible): 1 non-segregating (susceptible) in F3 generation. Similar results were obtained for pod borer resistance under no-choice conditions. Resistance to pod borer and trichomes associated with it (low density of type A trichome and high density of type C) are governed individually by a dominant allele of a single gene in C. scarabaeoides. Following backcrossing, these traits can be transferred from C. scarabaeoides into the cultivated background.  相似文献

The study was carried out to determine combining ability and association of yield and yield components among crosses derived from seven selected cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) parents. Twenty-one hybrids were generated from diallel crosses excluding reciprocals. Hybrids along with seven parents were studied for combining ability and phenotypic correlations for seed yield and eight yield components. The result indicated that the general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sca) were significant for most characters indicating the importance of both additive and non-additive genetic components. Additive gene action was important for eight characters except pod number, whereas non-additive gene action was not important for nodule number and grain yield. Parental lines IT86D-716 and IT81D-985 were found to be good general combiners for grain yield and other traits. The most promising specific combiners for yield and yield components were from crosses including IT87D-697-2 × IT86D-716, IT88D-867-11 × IT86D-716, IT93K-624 × IT87D-697-2, and IT87D-697-2 × IT92KD-405-1. Significant positive phenotypic correlations were observed between seed yield with pod length (POL), number of pods per plant (PON), and number of seeds per pod (SPD). POL, pod number per plant, SPD, and grain yield were identified as the best selection criteria that could be used in cowpea breeding programs.  相似文献

Summary Protoplasts were isolated from leaves of a single plant of Vigna aconitifolia, a drought resistant grain legume. The protoplasts regenerated and formed colony and calli from which 50 entire plants were regenerated and transferred to field conditions. Only 7 plants survived upto maturity and they flowered and produced pods with seed. The protoplast derived plants showed variation in important characters. Two groups of characters (one with 7 sets and another with 6 sets) were studied in the protoclones. In first group protoclones showed variations in seed germination, maturity age, pod length, pod and seed colour, number of abortive seed per pod and response to field rots, however, not much difference was recorded in pollen stainability and meiotic behaviour in these protoclones. In second group analysis of variants showed significance difference for plant height, rachis-length, length and breadth of mature odd leaflets, seed per pod and weight of seed. The results indicate that protoplast can be source of variation in this crop. However, detailed biochemical and genetical analysis of protoclones are required.  相似文献

Summary Atylosia scarabaeoides (L.) Benth., a wild relative of pigeonpea, possesses several useful genes which can be utilized for pigeonpea improvement. In the present study, 33 accessions of A. scarabaeoides were evaluated at ICRISAT Center during the 1987 rainy season for variation in some useful traits to identify parents for inter-generic hybridization. A large variation was observed for leaf components, seed size, pod length, seeds/pod, days to flowering, seed protein, sulphur amino acids, resistance to cyst nematode, phytophthora blight, sterility mosaic, fusarium wilt, pod borer, pod fly, and pod wasp. Only four accessions were found to have more than 28% protein content. Methionine and cystine contents were marginally higher than in pigeonpea but the variation was not large enough to utilize them in the breeding program. In A. scarabaeoides. accessions resistant to fusarium wilt, phytophthora blight, sterility mosaic, and cyst nematode were detected. Compared to pigeonpea, the A. scarabaeoides accessions were less susceptible to lepidopteran borer and were immune to pod fly damage. Accessions ICPW 89 and ICPW 111 in short- (100–120 days), and ICPW 94 and ICPW 118 in medium-duration (140–180 days) were identified as potential parents for use in inter-generic hybridization.ICRISAT Journal Article No. 967  相似文献

Summary The efficiency of indirect selection for seed yield was compared with direct selection for yield per se in chickpea. A total of 2500 single F2 plants, derived from 50 crosses with 50 plants from each cross, were divided into five sub-populations (SP1 to SP5) of 500 plants each by including 10 plants from each of the 50 crosses. The five sub-populations were advanced upto F6 by exercising 10% selection intensity for four successive generations for number of pods per plant in SP1, number of seeds per pod in SP2, seed weight in SP3, seed yield in SP4 and random selection in SP5. The efficiency of direct and indirect selection for yield was evaluated by comparing groups of 50 F6 lines from each sub-population. SP1 and SP3 F6 lines showed higher mean grain yield than the other three methods. SP1 and SP3 were found to be almost equally efficient in developing F6 lines which were significantly superior to the check. This suggests that indirect selection for yield via pod number and seed weight is more efficient than direct selection for yield.  相似文献

Summary Quantitative variability for seed yield and six other characters was analysed in Lotus corniculatus L. cv. Leo. The material consisted of 144 polycross progenies and 100 parents.Wide variability existed for all characters. The characters with the greatest variability were seed yield, forage grading and plant height. The polycross progeny test was employed to study the general combining ability of the parents. Highly significant differences existed for all seven characters under study.Parent-offspring genotypic and phenotypic correlations were high and significant for all characters except genotypic correlations for seed yield and seeds per pod. High h2 values (broad sense) were obtained for seed size and days to flowering. Traits with moderate to high h2 were seed yield (71% in parents, 64% in progenies), plant height, forage grading, and seeds per pod. Growth trials were conducted outdoors in the UK to determine the yield, yield components and plant architectural differences between determinate and indeterminate Phaseolus vulgaris bean plants. F3 lines derived from crosses between ‘Prelude’, a determinate cultivar and ‘V8’, an indeterminate landrace, were grown together with the parents and ‘Carioca’, an indeterminate landrace from Brazil. Data were recorded on flowering date, number of nodes on main stem at flowering, plant height at maturity, number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod, number of seeds/plant, 100-seed weight, seed mass/plant, percentages of diseased and healthy seeds/plant. Determinate F3 lines had significantly lower (P < 0.05) seed mass/plant, fewer pods/plant, fewer seeds/pod, fewer seeds/plant, lower harvest index, shorter stems, earlier date of flowering, fewer nodes at flowering and fewer healthy seeds/plant than indeterminate F3 lines. However, determinate genotypes had significantly larger (P < 0.05) pods to accommodate their larger seeds compared with indeterminate lines. A similar situation was found when the yield and yield components of ‘V8’, ‘Prelude’ and ‘Carioca’ were evaluated; the highest seed mass/plant was given by ‘V8’ and the lowest by ‘Prelude’. Furthermore, some indeterminate genotypes with Type IV growth habit yielded significantly higher (P < 0.05) than the high-yielding parent, ‘V8’, indicating a positive influence on seed yield by crossing different genotypes.  相似文献

在油菜始花期喷施不同浓度的脱落酸(ABA)和油菜素内酯(BR),分析其对油菜叶片光合速率和产量的影响;2008年1月低温冰冻天气之后,采用优化浓度的ABA和BR处理,测定油菜叶片的气体交换参数和叶绿素荧光参数,比较角果形态变化规律及产量构成因素。主要结果如下。与对照(CK)相比,喷施76×10-6 mol L-1ABA和1×10-6 mol L-1BR能延缓叶片光合速率的下降,冻害后喷施该浓度ABA和BR提高了叶片净光合速率(Pn)、光饱和点(LSP)、气孔导度(Gs)、胞间CO2浓度(Ci)与蒸腾速率(Tr);最大光化学效率(Fv/Fm)、光系统II量子产量(ΦPSII)与光化学猝灭系数(qP)均升高,叶绿素初始荧光(Fo)和非光化学猝灭系数(NPQ)降低,ABA和BR处理还提高叶片中叶绿素含量及可溶性蛋白的含量;角果面积增大,BR处理后单株角果数、每角粒数、千粒重及产量都比对照增加,ABA处理可增加角粒数和千粒重, 进而提高油菜的产量。总之,76×10-6 mol L-1ABA和1×10-6 mol L-1BR能促进油菜生长并有效缓解油菜冻害的影响。  相似文献

Cassava bacterial blight (CBB), caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis (Xam), is a particularly destructive disease in South America and Africa. The movement of infected asymptomatic stems is a major means of pathogen dispersal as well as infected seeds. The success of a cassava-seed certification program depends on the availability of reliable tests to detect the pathogen in vegetative planting materials and true seeds. We report here the different methods that permitted to detect the pathogen in cassava tissues. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was developed for this pathogen. The PCR assay worked well for pathogen detection in extracts from leaf and stem lesions and the minimum number of cells that could be detected ranged from 3 × 102 to 104 CFU per ml. Nested-PCR worked well for Xam detection from naturally infected seeds. This technique was specific, sensitive, and rapid for detecting Xam in cassava true seeds. The highest detection level found was 1–2 viable cells per reaction. A dot-blot assay was developed by evaluating a 898 bp DNA fragment unique to Xam strains as a diagnostic DNA probe. The probe detected Xam strains in crude extracts of leaf and stem lesions, cassava fruits and sexual seeds that were naturally infected. Overall sensitivity of the dot-blot method was about103CFU per reaction. The dot-blot hybridization technique can be easily used for culture indexing. A monoclonal antibody (MAb) was also used for an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and tested with various infected tissues. Overall sensitivity of the method was about103CFU per reaction. Twenty-one (near) pentaploid hybrids between sexually incompatible Solanum commersonii [2x(1EBN)] and cultivated S. tuberosum [4x(4EBN)] were characterized for tuber traits and fertility. A number of genotypes resembled the S. tuberosum type in terms of stolon length and eye depth and produced tubers under long day conditions. Tuber yields were not as high as expected, probably due to lack of adaptation of the S. commersonii genome to the environmental conditions in southern Italy (on average 325 g·pt−1 and 285 g·pt−1 in 2003 and in 2004, respectively). Compared to 2004, in the summer of 2003, characterized by extremely high temperatures, hybrids gave a higher tuber yield than the S. tuberosum control, suggesting that in our environmental conditions the wild S. commersonii genome, rather than resulting in heterosis for tuber yield, provides better adaptation to harsh environments. Although aneuploidy has often been associated with reduced fertility, several hybrids were fertile in crosses with S. tuberosum when used as female parents. In particular, the average berry set and number of seeds per berry were 38.2% and 31.8%, respectively. Based on significant relationships between ploidy levels and all yield and fertility data measured, the presence of extra chromosome affected the parameters considered: tuber yield in 2003 and 2004, percentage of fruit set, number of seeds per berry and number of seeds per pollinated flower. Regression analysis also indicated that “Residuals” were significant for all parameters measured. Therefore, additional factors (e.g. the genetic makeup of hybrids) may be key to fertility and yield.  相似文献

Summary Six inoculation techniques were compared for the artificial promotion of downy mildew (Peronosclerospora sorghi) in sorghum. These were (1) sprouted seeds incubated between sporulating infected leaves, (2) sprouted seeds depped in conidial suspension, (3) sprouted seeds sprayed with conidial suspension, (4) seedlings at plumule stage inoculated with drops of a conidial suspension, (5) seedlings at plumule stage sprayed with a conidial suspension, and (6) seedling showered with conidia falling from infected leaves. Seedlings at the one-leaf stage sprayed with a conidial suspension (6 × 105 ml-1) showed the highest systemic infection (100%) in the susceptible lines IS 643 and IS 18433. This technique is effective, repeatable, and allows the deposition of a conidial suspension as a fine mist on the entire seedling surface. In the greenhouse, the technique was used to test the downy mildew reaction of genotypes previously reported as resistant (< 5% incidence) in 3–4 years of field screenings. Of the 61 genotypes tested, 21 were free from downy mildew, 14 had less than 5% incidence, and the rest showed variable susceptible reactions. Therefore, the technique can be reliably and effectively used in the greenhouse to detect disease escapes and to indentify resistance.  相似文献

Morpho-agronomic traits and microsatellite markers were used to survey genetic diversity in 115 common bean genotypes that included 70 Indian landraces, 24 released varieties and 21 exotic accessions. Twelve morpho-agronomic traits, namely, days to 50% flowering, leaflet length, leaflet width, pod length, pod width, number of pods per plant, days to maturity, seed length, seed width, number of seeds per pod, 100 seed weight and seed yield per plant were studied. Field data of two consecutive years were subjected to multivariate analysis as proposed by Mahalanobis’s D2-statistics, Tochers method of clustering and combined analysis of variance. Seventeen microsatellite markers were also used to examine genetic diversity at molecular level that showed polymorphic information content (PIC) in the range of 0.00–0.684. Dendrograms based on Euclidean distances and UPGMA analysis showed the presence of majority of released varieties into single cluster, which pointed toward their low genetic base in comparison to indigenous landraces and exotic germplasm. Significant correlation existed between morphological genetic distance and microsatellite genetic distance tested by Mantel test (r = 0.876).  相似文献

Over 540 accessions of wild Lycopersicon species or their crosses with L. esculentum were screened for resistance in a series of trials. Forty-six accessions were selected for the final screening trial based on lower disease ratings in previous trials. Of these, L. hirsutum had the greatest number of resistant accessions, followed by L. esculentum and L. peruvianum. Twenty accessions were quantified for their levels of resistance based on leaf area infected, area under disease progress curve (AUDPC), and the degree of sporulation. There was a significant positive correlation between the AUDPC calculated from 20 accessions evaluated under growth room and field conditions. Five L. hirsutum accessions had no sporulation associated with leaf lesions, whereas L. esculentum accessions had an average of 1.6×104 conidia/cm2 of leaf tissue. There was significant positive correlation between the AUDPC values and the number of conidia per cm2 of leaf tissue.  相似文献

Summary Ten rice genotypes were inoculated with a virulent isolate of Magnaporthe grisea to study the effect of leaf age on components of partial resistance, and evaluate associations between these components. The number of sporulating lesions per cm2 leaf declined with increase of leaf age in all genotypes. The number of lesions per cm2 leaf area in one week old leaves was about 25% that of the number in very young leaves in the susceptible cultivar CO39, but less than 2% in the more resistant cultivars IR36, IR60 and IR62. Large differences between genotypes were found for the number of sporulating lesions that developed, and this factor was closely related to the period that leaves remained susceptible after appearance. The number of lesions in the most susceptible cultivar CO39 was about 7 times that in the cultivars IR60 and IR64. Differences between genotypes were also found for lesion size. The effect of aging on average lesion size was less pronounced than on lesion density. Lesion size and lesion density were positively correlated, but a rapid decline of density was not necessarily accompanied by a rapid decline of size. No apparent differences between genotypes were observed for latent period. Genotypes with leaves that became highly resistant soon after appearance expressed higher levels of partial resistance in the field.  相似文献

The effects of four row spacings (17.5, 35.0, 52.5 and 70.0 cm) and five seeding rates (50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 viable seeds m?2) on seed yield and some yield components of forage turnip (Brassica rapa L.) were evaluated under rainfed conditions in Bursa, Turkey in the 1998–1999 and 1999–2000 growing seasons. Plant height, stem diameter, pods/terminal raceme, total pods/plant, seeds/pod and primary branches/plant were measured individually. The number of plants per unit area was counted and the lodging rate of the plots was scored. The seed yield and 1000‐seed weight were also determined. Row spacing and seeding rate significantly affected most yield components measured. The number of plants per unit area increased with increasing seeding rate and decreasing row spacing. Plant height was not greatly influenced by row spacing and seeding rate, but higher seeding rates reduced the number of primary branches and the stem diameter. The number of pods/main stem was affected by row spacing and but not by the seeding rate. Also, the number of seeds per pod was not affected by either the row spacing or the seeding rate. In contrast, the number of pods per plant clearly increased with increasing row spacing, but decreased with increasing seeding rate. The plots seeded at narrow row spacings and at high seeding rates were more sensitive to lodging. Seeding rate had no significant effect on seed yield in both years. Seed yield was similar at all seeding rates, averaging 1151 kg ha?1. However, row spacing was associated with seed yield. The highest seed yield (1409 kg ha?1) was obtained for the 35.0‐cm row spacing and 200 seeds m?2 seeding rate combination without serious lodging problems.  相似文献

Summary The reproductive biology of Sesbania sesban, S. goetzei and S. keniensis (Leguminosae; Papilionoideae) was studied. Fifty percent flowering was observed at 102 to 153 days after germination for S. sesban accessions; 96 to 146 days for S. goetzei and 131 to 176 days for S. keniensis accessions. Flowers opened in the afternoon and remained fresh for 2–3 days. Bee species including Xylocopa sp., Apis mellifera, Megachile bituberculata and Chalicodoma sp. visited the flowers. Hand pollination experiments showed that all three species were self and cross compatible. The percentage of fully developed seeds was greater in pods formed after cross pollination compared to self pollination. No evidence was found for stigmatic or stylar self incompatibility. Outcrossing is probably the common method of reproduction under natural conditions, although in isolated trees substantial seed set by selfing might occur. Pod production under natural conditions was 34% for S. sesban; 49% for S. goetzei and 39% for S. keniensis. Considerable variation was found in pod production under open pollination between accessions of the same species. Selective abortion was observed within pods, with more mature seeds formed at the distal end of the pod.  相似文献

Verticillium wilt (VW) of potato, caused primarily by the fungus Verticillium dahliae, results in yield loss and is therefore an important soil-borne disease. Resistance to VW exists in potato germplasm and is used by breeders during cultivar development. Breeders could make more rapid progress toward the development of VW resistant clones if they had an effective early generation selection strategy. The purpose of this study was to determine whether selection for VW resistance could be carried out in the first tuber generation on single hills. One hundred and fifty-two clones from 19 families were planted as single hills on a V. dahliae-infested field. Each plant was scored for vine maturity, VW symptom expression, yield, stem colonization (colony forming units (cfu), in dried basal stem segments) and incidence (percent infected stems). In the second clonal generation, which consisted of replicated four-hill plots, stem colonization scores and incidence values were used to identify clones which were more resistant than a moderately resistant cultivar and others which were more susceptible than a susceptible cultivar. The efficiency and reliability of the single-hill selection strategy, based on symptoms and yield, was then determined by comparison to the four-hill results. We determined that the best single-hill selection strategy was negative selection (discard clones with the lowest performance) with low stringency, based on yield.  相似文献
