Castor (Ricinus communis L.) is an economically important plant for production of industrial oil as well as used as primary food plant for rearing of eri silkworm, Samia ricini (Donovan). The biomass yield of eight selected castor accessions were studied to find out a promising castor genotype in terms of growth and biomass yield, nutrient status, disease and pest resistant together with eri silkworm rearing performance. Among the selected accessions, Ac03 and Ac04 yielded an average of 344.70 g (±88.05) and 334.50 g (±60.62) of leaf biomass/plant respectively (mean 324.62 g; n = 8) and the yield was stable over the years (2007-10). However, in late winter, leaf blight and leaf spot disease were reported in all the castor accessions together with the infestation of hairy caterpillar (4.00-5.33%). The silkworm rearing performances were also better in Ac03 in terms of shell weight (0.50 ± 0.07 g; mean 0.42 g; n = 8), shell ratio (15.5%) and effective rate of rearing i.e. ERR (85.67). ERR of eri silkworm was influenced by biochemical compositions of leaves of different castor accessions. The weight of larvae and cocoons were significantly influenced by nitrogen and crude protein content of the foliages. Altogether, Ac03 and Ac04 castor genotypes were found to be better in terms of agronomical and yield attributing traits together with silkworm rearing performance.  相似文献

Production of oil from castor (Ricinus communis) generates two main by-products: husks and meal. For each ton of castor oil, 1.31 ton of husks and 1.13 ton of meal are produced. Castor meal is the most important by-product due to its high nitrogen content, and presently it is predominantly used as an organic fertilizer. This greenhouse study aimed to find optimized blends of castor husks and meal as organic fertilizer for growth of castor plants. The by-products were mixed to sandy soil in the doses (v:v) of 0 + 10%, 2.5 + 7.5%, 5.0 + 5.0%, 7.5 + 2.5% and 10.0 + 0% of castor meal and castor husks, respectively. At 50 days after sowing, data was taken on plant growth and shoot nutrients content. Blends of castor meal and castor husks used as fertilizer promoted substantial plant growth up to the dose of 4.5% (in volume) of meal. Doses higher than 4.5% caused reduction in plant growth and even plant death. It seems that rapidly mineralizing nitrogen from the castor meal is the reason for both the intensive plant growth in low doses, and the reduction of plant growth in high doses due to excessive mineral N. Increments in castor meal dose resulted in increased N and Ca shoot contents. Other macronutrients were not influenced. Castor meal is a good organic fertilizer, due to its high N and P contents, but blending with castor husks is not necessary.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted in 2007-2009 in coastal saline regions of Yancheng city in Jiangsu province of China (120°13′E, 33°38′N). The experiment was to investigate relationships among canopy spectral reflectance, canopy chlorophyll density (CCD), leaf area index (LAI), and yield of two Chinese castor varieties (Zi Bi var. and Yun Bi var.) across four N fertilizer rates of 0, 90, 180, and 360 kg N ha−1. These N rates were used to generate a wide range of difference in canopy structure and seed yield. Measurements of canopy reflectance were made throughout the growing season using a hand-held spectroradiometer. Samples for CCD and LAI were obtained on days that reflectance measurements were made. Fifteen hyperspectral reflectance indices were calculated. Canopy spectral characteristics were heavily influenced by saline soil background in the rapid growing period (RGP), thus hyperspectral data obtained in this period were not suited for reflecting castor growth condition or predicting final yield. CCD increased linearly with most reflectance indices in the full coverage period (FCP) and senescent period (SP) for the two castor varieties, whereas LAI did not. Most of reflectance indices were significantly correlated with yield of two varieties in different growing periods. The OSAVI model provided the best yield prediction for Zi Bi var. with predicted values very close to observed ones (R2 = 0.799), and the mSRVI705 model was well used for Yun Bi var. yield estimation (R2 = 0.759). These results indicate that the hyperspectral data measured at appropriate time could be well used for castor yield estimation.  相似文献

CIMMYT hexaploid spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) germplasm has played a global role in assisting wheat improvement. This study evaluated four classes of CIMMYT germplasm (encompassing a total of 273 lines), along with 15 Australian cultivars (Oz lines) for grain yield, yield components and physiological traits in up to 27 environments in Australia's north-eastern region, where terminal drought frequently reduces grain yield and grain size.Broadly-adapted CIMMYT germplasm selected for grain yield had greater yield potential and improved performance under drought stress, being up to 5% greater yielding in High-yielding (mean yield 429 g m−2) and 4-10% greater yielding than adapted Oz lines in Low-yielding environments (mean yield 185 g m−2). Whilst maintaining statistically similar harvest index and spikes m−2 compared to broadly-adapted Oz lines across all environments, sets of selected CIMMYT lines had greater canopy temperature depression (0.18-0.27 °C), dry weight stem−1 (0.20-0.37 g), increased grains spike−1 (0.8-3.4 grains), grain number m−2 (ca. 20-800 grains), and maturity biomass (56-83 g m−2). Compared to selected Oz lines, broadly-adapted CIMMYT lines had a smaller reduction in Low compared to High-yielding environments for these traits, especially dry weight stem−1, such that CIMMYT lines had ca. 25% and 10% greater dry weight stem−1 than the Oz lines in Low- and High-yielding environment groups, respectively. Broadly-adapted CIMMYT germplasm also had slightly higher stem water soluble carbohydrate concentration at anthesis (ca. 6 mg g−1), which contributed to their higher grain weight (ca. 0.5 mg grain−1), and maintained an agronomically appropriate time to anthesis and plant height. Thus current CIMMYT germplasm should be useful donor sources of traits to enrich breeding programs targeting variable production environments where there is a high probability of water deficit during grain filling. However, as multiple traits were important, efficient introgression of these traits in breeding programs will be complex.  相似文献

Castor plant (Ricinus communis L.) produces a very important oil for chemical and biofuel industries. However, doubts remain about what the best plant arrangement is to obtain the maximum yield of seeds and oil from short height castor genotypes cultivated in higher plant population. This study evaluated two castor genotypes (FCA-PB and IAC 2028) in 5 plant arrangements (row spacing × in-row spacing): 0.90 m × 0.44 m (traditional), 0.90 m × 0.20 m, 0.75 m × 0.24 m, 0.60 × 0.30 m, and 0.45 m × 0.40 m, in spring-summer and fall-winter cropping seasons in Botucatu, São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. The traditional plant arrangement comprised an initial plant population of 25,000 plants ha−1, while the others comprised 55,000 plants ha−1. The IAC 2028 genotype presented the greatest plant height, first raceme insertion height, basal stem diameter, number of fruits per raceme and 100 seed weight; however, seed yield and seed oil content were equal between genotypes. Wider stems and higher number of racemes per plant and fruits per raceme were observed with a 0.90 m × 0.44 m plant arrangement, but due to the lowest plant population (25,000 plants ha−1) in this plant arrangement, the higher values of the yield components mentioned above did not result in higher yield. The higher plant population (55,000 plants ha−1) by narrower row spacings (0.45 or 0.60 m) combination produced a higher castor seed yield. The effect of plant arrangement was more intense in the spring-summer cropping season.  相似文献

Weed management is among the main factors limiting cultivation of castor (Ricinus communis) in extensive fields, particularly when labor is scarce or expensive. This experiment evaluated the efficiency of weed management programs using preemergence (clomazone, pendimethalin, and trifluralin) and a postemergence herbicide (chlorimuron-ethyl) applied at 20 days after emergence in castor plants cv. BRS Energia under rainfed conditions in Apodi, Brazil. No phytotoxicity was observed on the castor plants, and the postemergence herbicide significantly increased castor seed yield to 1466 kg ha−1 complementing the weed control of preemergence herbicides treatments in which seed yield was 1207 kg ha−1. Seed yield on weedy and weed-free treatments was 760 and 1971 kg ha−1, respectively. Weeds were kept under a satisfactory control up to 40 days after emergence. This program resulted in reasonable weed control because the preemergence herbicides controled monocotyledon weeds, while the postemergence herbicide controlled broad leafed species being selective to castor plants.  相似文献

Castor (Ricinus communis L.) stalks, which are a readily available by-product of this plant mainly cultivated for seed production, derived from experimental plantations grown in Northern Greece during the period April–October 1996 were assessed for their suitability as feed stocks for direct substitution of wood in particleboard. The average stalk yield of castor reached about 10 dry t/ha, which is higher than the average yield of forest in temperate zones. After harvesting, castor stalks were dried in a greenhouse to about 12% moisture content, and chipped by an automobile chipper and re-chipped in a hammermill. Castor particles and industrial wood particles mixed in various proportions were used as raw material for one-layer and for the middle layer of three-layer particleboards. A commercial E2 grade UF-resin was used as binder. Castor particles were characterized by a lower slenderness ratio and lower bulk density than industrial wood particles. The evaluation of the mechanical and hygroscopic properties of panels showed the following results: Partial substitution of wood by castor stalks resulted in the deterioration of all board properties. The presence of the unlignified pith and the configuration of castor particles seem to be responsible for the deleterious effect of castor stalks on board properties. However, comparing the properties of the boards produced in this study to relevant European and American Standards, it was found that, with the exception of screwholding strength for three-layer boards, the experimental one layer-, and three-layer boards containing up to 25% and 75% castor particles respectively meet or exceed the Standards requirements for interior boards.  相似文献

A collection of 191 durum wheat accessions representing Mediterranean Basin genetic diversity was grown in nine different environments in four countries, with productivities ranging from 0.99 to 6.78 t ha−1. The population breeding structure comprised eight genetic subpopulations (GSPs) using data derived from 97 evenly distributed SSR markers. The phenotypic structure was assessed: (i) from the mean values of six agronomic traits across environments (multivariate), and (ii) from data representing each trait in each environment (univariate). Mean daily maximum temperature from emergence to heading was significantly (P < 0.05) and negatively associated to yield, accounting for 59% of yield variations. Significant but weak relationships were obtained between the genetic similarities among accessions and their overall agronomic performance (r = 0.15, P < 0.001), plant height (r = 0.12, P < 0.001), spike–peduncle length (r = 0.06, P < 0.01) and thousand kernel weight (r = 0.03, P < 0.05), suggesting a very low possibility of prediction of the agronomic performance based on random SSR markers. The percentage of variability (measured by sum of squares) explained by the environment varied between 76.3 and 98.5% depending on the trait, while that explained by genotypes ranged between 0.4 and 12.6%, and that explained by the GE interaction ranged from 1.1 to 12.5%. The clustering of the accessions based on multivariate phenotypic data offered the best explanation of genotypic differences, accounting for 30.3% (for yield) to 75.1% (for kernel weight) of the observed variation. The genotype × environment interaction was best explained by the phenotypic univariate clustering procedure, which explained from 28.5% (for kernel weight) to 74.9% (for days to heading) of variation. The only accessions that clustered both in the genetic dissimilarities tree and the tree obtained using Euclidean distances based on standardized phenotypic data across environments were those closely related to the CIMMYT hallmark founder ‘Altar 84’, the ICARDA accessions adapted to continental-dryland areas, and the landraces, suggesting that genetic proximity corresponded to agronomic performance in only a few cases.  相似文献

In the absence of serious post-anthesis stress, the potential supply of assimilates for grain filling in barley appears to exceed the storage (sink) capacity of the grains. The sink capacity is a function of the number of grains per unit land area and their potential size. In order to investigate the contribution of pre and early post-anthesis factors in the control of potential grain weight, regression analysis has been used to analyse data from field experiments conducted on winter barley crops cv. Pearl grown at six sites across the UK between 2002 and 2004. Crops were grown under a comparable husbandry regime with a full crop protection, growth regulator and fertilizer programme. The mean grain weight (MGW) varied from 35 to 46 mg at 100% dry matter over 17 site/year combinations. The variation in MGW between site/years was associated with differences in the rate rather than the duration of grain filling. MGW did not relate well to any measure of above ground growth or crop structure at ear emergence (Zadoks GS59). There was a significant positive linear relationship between MGW and the amount of radiation (PAR) intercepted per unit grain number between ear emergence and the start of rapid grain filling (r2 = 0.32, P = 0.023), but not over the whole grain filling period. This is consistent with the view that MGW is determined by potential grain size. A multiple regression model comprising five explanatory variables accounted for a much larger proportion of the total variation in MGW (r2 = 0.72, P = 0.013) than PAR interception on its own. There were significant positive associations of MGW with post-anthesis radiation use efficiency and PAR intercepted from GS59 to the start of rapid grain growth (RGG), and significant negative associations with the shoot number per plant, mean air temperature from GS39–59 and mean daily rainfall from GS59-RGG. The results suggest that both pre and post-anthesis conditions operate in concert to determine the potential grain weight of barley in temperate climates. The dry weight and water content of grains and ears followed a common pattern during grain growth for all site/years when the percentage moisture content was used as an index to normalise different rates of development. Use of the above data for predicting potential grain weight of barley prior to harvest is discussed.  相似文献

Phaeosphaeria leaf spot (PLS) disease (causal agent Phaeosphaeria maydis (Henn.) Rane, Payak & Renfro) of maize is increasing in importance in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, there is still limited information on the combining ability for disease resistance of the germplasm that are adapted to African environments. Evaluating combining ability effects and their interactions with the environment would provide valuable information that can be used in the development of cultivars that are resistant to PLS. This study was therefore conducted to determine the combining ability, gene action and the relationship between grain yield and PLS disease severity among selected tropical advanced maize inbred lines. Forty five F1 hybrids were generated by crossing 10 inbred lines in a half diallel mating scheme. The 45 hybrids along with the ten inbred parents were evaluated in four environments, with two replications each between 2007 and 2009. General and specific combining ability (GCA and SCA) effects were highly significant (P ≤ 0.001) for PLS, grain yield and days to anthesis. GCA effects accounted for 66–90% and SCA effects for 10–34% of the variation in the hybrids for PLS resistance, grain yield and days to anthesis. This indicated predominance of additive over non-additive gene action for the three traits in these inbred lines. The resistant inbred lines to PLS were A1220-4, N3-2-3-3, CML312, MP18 and CML488. These lines had good combining ability for PLS resistance and contributed towards resistance in their crosses. In general, resistant hybrids involved a susceptible and a resistant parent, where at least one of the parents had a negative GCA effect. In addition, lines A1220-4 and CML312 contributed towards high yield and were late maturing. Inbred line CZL00009 conferred genes for early maturity. Linear regression analysis indicated that grain yield of maize was suppressed by about 250 kg ha−1 per each increase in PLS disease severity score, underscoring the need to control the disease. Significant (P < 0.01), negative correlations (r = −0.29 to −0.43) between grain yield and PLS severity were also detected. This showed the potential of PLS to reduce yield when favourable conditions for disease development are present. By and large, highly significant additive gene action implied that progress would be made through selection. Although non-additive effects were small (±10%), observation of dominance effects which were associated with reduced disease levels in some hybrids may be exploited in developing single cross maize hybrids among these inbreds when one parent is resistant.  相似文献

Transpiration efficiency (TE) has been recognized as an important source of yield variation under drought stress in groundnut. Here the variation for TE is evaluated in a set of 318 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of groundnut at F8 generation, derived from a cross between a high TE (ICGV 86031) and a low TE (TAG 24) parent, and the value of specific leaf area (SLA), SPAD chlorophyll meter readings (SCMR) and carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C) as surrogates of TE are measured. Transpiration efficiency was measured gravimetrically in the 318 RILs and parents under progressive soil drying in a pot culture in two post-rainy seasons. Large and consistent variation for TE existed among the RILs across years. The overall distribution of TE among the RILs indicated that TE was governed by dominant and additive genes. Surrogates SLA and SCMR, were measured prior, during and after completion of the drought period, whereas Δ13C was measured on the dried tissue after harvest. Transpiration efficiency was negatively associated with SLA after the completion of stress treatment (r2 = 0.15) and Δ13C in leaves (r2 = 0.13) and positively associated with SCMR during stress (r2 = 0.17). These associations, all fairly weak, were significant only in 2004. None of these relationships was found in 2005. Although the heritability of SCMR during 2005 was relatively higher than that of TE, and although SCMR has previously been used to identify contrasting germplasm for TE, the stress-dependence of the relationship with TE, and the poor regression coefficients (r2) with that RIL population, do not confer that these surrogates are adequately robust enough in that population. Though more time consuming, a direct gravimetric evaluation for TE appeared to be more reliable.  相似文献

Toxicities of the eight quinones were evaluated through leaf dip bioassays conducted against Tetranychus urticae, Myzus persicae, Myzocallis walshii, and Illinoia liriodendri. Based on LC50 values, plumbagin (LC50 = 0.001%) was the most active compound against T. urticae and ubiquinone Q0 (LC50 = 0.005%), plumbagin (LC50 = 0.010%), and dibromothymoquinone (LC50 = 0.012%) were the most active compounds against M. persicae. The most active compounds against M. walshii were juglone (LC50 = 0.011%) and ubiquinone Q0 (LC50 = 0.019%), whereas dibromothymoquinone (LC50 = 0.030%), plumbagin (LC50 = 0.033%) and ubiquinone Q0 (LC50 = 0.058%) were the most toxic to I. liriodendri. Ecotrol (positive control) was the least toxic compound (LC50 = 0.39%) against T. urticae and M. persicae (LC50 = 0.447%). Although the majority of the compounds tested were toxic to all four test species in residual bioassays, there was little overlap among the test species in terms of susceptibility to the compounds and interspecific differences were observed. Regarding structure-activity relationships for quinones, the addition of a hydroxyl group resulted in a significant increase in the toxicity of the 1,4-naphthoquinones, and those possessing a methyl group exhibited the highest levels of activity in T. urticae. The bromine atom at the 2- and 5-positions of the benzoquinone ring is crucial to the toxicity of the compounds against I. liriodendri. Toxicity was greatly affected not only by the number of hydroxyl groups, but also by their positions in the ring in the case of M. walshii. Juglone and plumbagin as residual toxins in the laboratory also reduced the population of two-spotted spider mites compared to EcoTrol™ (positive control) and the negative control in the greenhouse experiment. Some quinones tested may have potential as commercial insecticides and miticides, or alternatively, could serve as lead compounds for the development of more potent crop protection agents.  相似文献

This paper applies linear mixed model and pattern analyses to 122 on-farm trials of commercial and near-commercial sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) hybrids grown over 15 years in 32 locations of central Argentina to determine the contributions of change in characteristics of germplasm pools to increases in oil yield. The ‘Relative Peak Performance’ (best linear unbiased predictors, BLUPs) of 49 hybrids released for the conventional market between 1983 and 2005 showed genetic gains of 11.9 kg ha−1 year−1, 0.19% year−1 and 16.1 kg ha−1 year−1 for oil yield, grain-oil concentration and grain yield, respectively. Oil yield improvement was consistent across three market segments and a biplot of genotype-by-attribute BLUPs summarised 20 years of breeding to demonstrate how the merging of two germplasm pools of differing maturity, achene type and grain-oil concentration resulted in step-wise improvements in grain yield and grain-oil concentration and a move toward an intermediate maturity. The analysis of general combining ability within a breeding program shows that the female and male germplasm pools were improved in different ways over time. On the female side, much of this improvement was to encompass different combinations of the determining traits of oil yield, while on the male side the improvement was more linear in terms of exploitation of genotypic variance for oil yield per se.  相似文献

The susceptibility of three sweet potato cultivars (Ipomoea batatas L.) C4, TIS 3290 and TIS 9162 was evaluated against 156 isolates of Meloidogyne spp. with the aim to include resistant/tolerant sweet potato cultivars in a crop rotation scheme for the management of root-knot nematodes. The nematode isolates corresponded to races 1, 2 and 3 of Meloidogyne arenaria (n = 7), races 1, 2, 3 and 4 of M. incognita (n = 131) and Meloidogyne javanica (n = 18). Also, the isolates of M. incognita were differentiated in virulence groups: Pepper (n = 35), Pepper-Mi (n = 25), Tomato (n = 41) and Tomato-Mi (n = 30), depending on their ability to parasitize resistant pepper and tomato cultivars. The tested isolates of M. javanica parasitized C4 and TIS 3290, but not TIS 9162, whereas M. arenaria parasitized C4 and TIS 9162, but not TIS 3290, and M. incognita was able to parasitize the three sweet potato cultivars tested. C4 was the most susceptible cultivar to all nematode species tested, especially M. incognita, TIS 3290 was the most resistant and TIS 9162 was in between (7.2, 62.9 and 26.9% of resistant plants, respectively). Susceptibility of the sweet potato cultivars showed slight variations depending on the race or virulence group of M. incognita. The results suggest that sweet potato cultivars TIS 3290 and TIS 9162 may be used as rotation crops in fields where root-knot nematodes are present, their selection depending on the Meloidogyne isolates present. The use of resistant sweet potato cultivars would be preferably combined with other management practices to avoid virulence selection in nematode isolates.  相似文献

Knowledge of the changes in agronomic and photosynthetic traits associated with genetic gains in grain yield potential is essential for an improved understanding of yield-limiting factors and for determining future breeding strategies. The objectives of this study were to identify agronomic and photosynthetic traits associated with genetic gains in grain yield of facultative wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) between 1981 and 2008 in Henan Province, the most important wheat producing area in China. During the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 crop seasons, a yield potential trial comprising 18 leading and new cultivars released between 1981 and 2008 was conducted at two locations, using a completely randomised block design of three replicates. Results showed that average annual genetic gain in grain yield was 0.60% or 51.30 kg ha−1 yr−1, and the significant genetic improvement in grain yield was directly attributed to increased thousand grain weight which also contributed to the significant increase in harvest index. The genetic gains in rates of net photosynthesis at 10, 20 and 30 days after anthesis were 1.10% (R2 = 0.46, P < 0.01), 0.68% (R2 = 0.31, P < 0.05) and 6.77% (R2 = 0.34, P < 0.05), respectively. The rates of net photosynthesis at 10 (r = 0.58, P < 0.05), 20 (r = 0.59, P < 0.05) and 30 (r = 0.65, P < 0.01) days after anthesis were closely and positively correlated with grain yield. A slight decrease in leaf temperature and an increase in stomatal conductance after anthesis were also observed. Grain yield was closely and positively associated with stomatal conductance (r = 0.69, P < 0.01) and transpiration rate (r = 0.63, P < 0.01) at 30 days after anthesis. Therefore, improvement of those traits was the likely basis of increasing grain yield in Henan Province between 1981 and 2008. The genetic improvement in yield was primarily attributed to the utilization of two elite parents Yumai 2 and Zhou 8425B. The future challenge of wheat breeding in this region is to maintain the genetic gain in grain yield and to improve grain quality, without increasing inputs for the wheat-maize double cropping system.  相似文献

A pea breeding strategy is required to cope with the large climatic variation featuring south-European environments. Thirty-seven recent cultivars bred by 21 European or Australian institutions were grown in two climatically contrasting Italian sites (Lodi, subcontinental; Foggia, Mediterranean), two cropping years per site and two sowing times per year, to define various elements of this strategy. The study assessed: (i) the impact of genotype × environment (GE) interaction due to spatial and temporal factors on the consistency of top-yielding cultivars; (ii) the similarity between environments for GE effects and its implications on adaptation strategies; (iii) the extent of genotypic and GE interaction effects, and the relationship with adaptive responses, for various morphophysiological traits; (iv) the adaptation pattern and the combination of adaptive traits featuring three germplasm types, i.e. European spring and winter types, and germplasm selected in Mediterranean environments; (v) the predicted efficiency of direct and indirect selection procedures for grain yield. The geoclimatic area had a major impact on crop yield (5.15 t/ha in Lodi vs. 2.52 t/ha in Foggia) but tended to affect GE interaction less than time or year of autumn sowing, suggesting to breed for wide adaptation. Top-yielding cultivars as modeled by additive main effects and multiplicative interaction were environment-specific. On average, spring and winter materials outyielded the Mediterranean germplasm but the spring type, characterized by wide entry variation, included most widely- and specifically-adapted top-yielding cultivars. Cold-tolerant spring-type germplasm is preferable to breed for wide adaptation as it may combine high yield potential with adaptation to winter cold and terminal drought and heat stress. Lodging susceptibility, harvest index, onset and duration of flowering, and canopy height at maturity assessed in individual environments showed moderate to fairly high broad-sense heritability on a plot basis (h2 > 0.20) and tended to correlation with yield over test environments (r ≥ 0.20). An indirect selection index including harvest index and canopy height exhibited about 20% greater predicted efficiency than direct selection for yield when using one selection environment and could be preferred for early selection stages. Direct yield selection in late selection stages should ideally be performed across 2 years in two environments that contrast for geoclimatic area and time of autumn sowing.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to identify Vicia faba germplasm resistant both to rust and chocolate spot. A collection of 43 accessions of V. faba previously identified as chocolate-spot resistant was evaluated for rust and chocolate spot resistance in Egypt and in Spain. The genotype and genotype × environment (GGE) biplot analyses allowed the selection of 11 accessions resistant to both diseases in those locations. These 11 accessions were evaluated for rust in an additional field trial in Spain, all performing better than the susceptible check. The joint analysis of the 11 accessions in the four field trials where they had been evaluated revealed no significant effects either for genotype, environment or the genotype × environment interaction. They are hence promising sources of resistance, both for their low severities and their stable responses across the studied environments. This collection was also tested under controlled conditions against the Egyptian and the Spanish isolates of rust present in the field trials further underlining the stable performance of these genotypes. Finally, the effect of previous infection with chocolate spot on rust resistance was assessed under controlled conditions and no influence of it was found.  相似文献

Root lodging is an important adversity affecting sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) production in Argentina under current husbandry practices, and may limit progress towards the achievement of higher yields via increased plant population density. Although there are perceptions that lodging susceptibility varies across developmental stages, crop population densities, genotypes and soil types, these perceptions have not been tested for sunflower using a standardized experimental protocol. This study aimed at: (1) identifying the sources of the variation in root lodging susceptibility in response to variations in crop population density in two genotypes of reputedly different susceptibility; (2) detecting the crop developmental stages most susceptible to root lodging; and (3) examining the relationships between root failure moment, root plate diameter and soil shear strength. We mechanically induced lodging at three developmental stages in plants rooted in pre-wetted plots. The crops were grown at 5.6 plants m−2 over 3 years on either Typic Argiudoll or Typic Hapludoll soils and at 3, 5.6, 10 and 16 plants m−2 on a Typic Argiudoll. The force needed to induce root lodging (root failure moment) and root plate diameter varied across genotypes, plant densities and developmental stages. Root failure moment and root plate diameters were greater (p < 0.05 for both variables) in the resistant hybrid across the three development stages and almost all crop population densities. For both hybrids, the most susceptible development stage was R2, and root failure moment and root plate diameter diminished (p < 0.05) as crop population density increased. Although root failure moment did not differ between soil types, root plate diameter was greater (p < 0.0001) in the coarser soil. The relationship between root failure moment and the product of root plate diameter cubed by soil shear strength (a measure of plant anchorage strength) for both hybrids, both soil types, and all crop population densities could be described by a single linear relationship (y = 0.2382x; R2 = 0.812; p < 0.025).  相似文献

Simple plant-based diagnostic tools can be used to determine crop P status. Our objectives were to establish the relationships between P and N concentrations of the uppermost collared leaf (PL and NL) of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) during the growing season and, in particular, to determine the critical leaf P concentrations required to diagnose P deficiencies. Various N applications were evaluated over six site-years for wheat and eight site-years for maize (2004-2006) with adequate soil P for growth. Phosphorus and N concentrations of the uppermost collared leaf were determined weekly and the relationships between leaf N and P concentrations were established using only the sampling dates from the stem elongation stage for wheat and from the V8 stage of development for maize. Leaf P concentration generally decreased with decreasing N fertilization. Relationships between PL and NL concentrations (mg g−1 DM) using all site-years and sampling dates were described by significant linear-plateau functions in both maize (PL = 0.82 + 0.089 NL if NL ≤ 32.1 and PL = 3.7 if NL > 32.1; R2 = 0.41; P < 0.001) and wheat (PL = 0.02 + 0.106 NL if NL ≤ 33.2 and PL = 3.5 if NL > 33.2; R2 = 0.42; P < 0.001). Variation among sampling dates in the relationships were noted. By restricting the sampling dates [413-496 growing degree days (5 °C basis) in wheat (i.e., stem elongation) and 1494-1579 crop heat units in maize (i.e., silking), relationships for wheat (PL = 0.29 + 0.073 NL, R2 = 0.66; P < 0.001) and maize (PL = 1.04 + 0.084 NL, R2 = 0.66; P < 0.001) were improved. In maize, expressing P and N concentrations on a leaf area basis (PLA and NLA) at silking further improved the relationship (PLA = 0.002 + 0.101 NLA, R2 = 0.80; P < 0.001). Predictive models of critical P concentration as a function of N concentration in the uppermost collared leaf of wheat and maize were established which could be used for diagnostic purposes.  相似文献

Among the yield components, grain weight is considered a conservative trait whose determination is still beyond our complete understanding. Crop physiology uses a whole approach to study this complex trait, which can provide helpful information to plant breeders and molecular biologists. This study emphasizes the understanding of pre- and post-anthesis determinants of final grain weight. A field experiment was carried out in two growing seasons evaluating two wheat cultivars contrasting in grain weight potential. Carpel weight at pollination, grain dimensions, grain water, dry matter and volume dynamics were assessed. Among grain dimensions, grain length was the trait, which explained final grain weight (r2 = 0.78; P < 0.01 and r2 = 0.94; P < 0.001 for the 1st and 2nd season, respectively) and it was the first trait to stabilize after anthesis. Water content of grains stabilized little later and also showed a strong association with final grain weight (r2 = 0.93; P < 0.01 and r2 = 0.98; P < 0.01 for the 1st and 2nd season respectively). Most importantly, carpel weight at pollination showed a positive and linear association with final grain weight (r2 = 0.79, P < 0.01 and r2 = 0.86 P < 0.01 for the 1st and 2nd season, respectively) irrespective of the cultivar and grain position. In addition, positive associations were also found between grain volume, water content, grain length, and carpel weight at pollination. Therefore, the associations between pre- and post-anthesis traits found in this study support the hypothesis that grain weight is determined before anthesis and fruit tissues (i.e., pericarp in cereals and sunflower) set an upper limit to grain weight.  相似文献
