This short communication describes results from a preliminary characterization of the dimensions and mechanical properties of matricaria maritimum fibres. The aim is to develop a complementary industrial application of these plants, which are grown along the coast mainly for pharmaceutical use. The fibres are shown to be of small diameter, 5-10 μm, and tubular in form. Nano-indentation on fibres and tensile tests on fibre bundles provide an indication of the mechanical behaviour of these fibres, which are similar to those of sisal (leaf fibre) and miscanthus (grass fibre), and may be interesting for reinforcement of polymer matrix composites.  相似文献

The effects of four host plants (Agave sisalana, Ag. americana var. marginata, Ananas comosus Baili and Ancomosus Smooth Cayenne) on the biology of the mealybug Dysmicoccus neobrevipes Beardsley were studied in the laboratory at 26 ± 1 °C, 75-90% RH and 14:10 (L:D) photoperiod. The development, survivorship, longevity, reproduction and life table parameters of D. neobrevipes differed among the host plants. The shortest developmental period (from the first instar nymph to adult) was recorded on Ancomosus Smooth Cayenne (22.4 days for females and 21.3 days for males), whereas the longest was recorded on An. comosus Baili (25.6 days for females and 24.7 days for males). The highest survivorship was found on An. comosus Baili (98% for both females and males) and the lowest was on Ag. americana var. marginata (39.6% for females and 50% for males). Meanwhile the sex ratio and fecundity were highest and the pre-lay period was shortest on Ag. sisalana. The longest longevity of females was 62.5 days on Ancomosus Baili, whereas the other host plants did not differ significantly with grand mean longevities of 51.0 days for females, while the longest and shortest longevities of males were 4.6 days and 2.3 days on Ag. americana var. marginata and Ag. sisalana, respectively. Values for net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase were highest on Ag. sisalana, whereas the mean generation time was shortest on An. comosus Smooth Cayenne. The results indicated that Ag. sisalana is the most suitable host for D. neobrevipes among the four tested plants. When reared on Ag. sisalana, D. neobrevipes had a short developmental period (females 22.7 days and males 23.8 days), high reproduction (418 nymphs/female) and a high intrinsic rate of increase (0.106). Results of this study indicated that host plant can largely influence the population dynamics of D. neobrevipes, and our findings are useful in understanding the roles of host plants in integrated management of this pest, including exploitation of these host plants in push-pull control.  相似文献

Linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) is a widely grown source of industrial and edible oil. Other varieties of the same species (flax) are cultivated for the long, strong bast fibres of their stems. The bast fibres of linseed generally go unused, although there is growing interest in developing linseed into a dual-purpose flax from which both seed and fibre could be utilized. Towards this objective, an improved understanding is required of the role of plant growth regulators in stem and fibre development in linseed. We have tested the effects of applying varying combinations of gibberellic acid (GA3), the auxin indole-3-acetic acid, and a GA biosynthesis inhibitor (paclobutrazol) to an elite linseed variety (CDC Bethune). Results showed that GA stimulated stem elongation, stem expansion and the proliferation, expansion, elongation and cell wall thickening of xylem fibres. The impact of GA on phloem tissues was less apparent, although GA had a positive effect on the number of bast fibres observed in stem transverse section, and GA3 application in combination with IAA increased the thickness of bast fibre secondary walls nearly two-fold. Other than the bast fibre cell walls, IAA treatments (alone or in combination with GA3) did not affect most aspects of linseed stem development, suggesting that the observed effects of GA were not mediated by cross-talk with IAA. The relationships defined here between GA, stem architecture, and bast fibre properties in linseed provide a useful framework for manipulation of fibre properties through breeding, biotechnology, and field treatments.  相似文献

Résumé Sur l'agave de sisal et sa sélection en Afrique orientale. Le sisal donne des fibres pour des cordes, de gros tissus, des tapis, des nattes etc. L'exportation mondiale en fibres durs s'élévait en 1938 à 500000 tonnes, dont 348000 tonnes revenaient au sisal. Le territoire du Tanganyika exportait 103027 tonnes, le Kenya, l'Uganda, le Nyassaland, le Madagascar et l'Afrique Portugaise orientale ensemble 54453 tonnes. La culture du sisal en Afrique orientale commença en 1893 avec 62 bulbes provenant de Floride et plantées dans l'ancienne Afrique orientale allemande. Des différentes espèces contenant des fibres, on ne cultive pour le sisal quel'Agave sisalana Perr. et l'Agave amaniensis Trelease et Nowell, dont les feuilles n'ont pas d'épines sur leurs bords. L'auteur décrit les méthodes de culture de la plante en Afrique orientale. Le pourcentage en fibres varie de 2,5 à 5, mais on récommande d'examiner ces pourcentages déjà dans les bulbilles pour pouvoir alors sélectionner celles qui contiennent la plus grande quantité. Les bulbilles de l'inflorescence donnent une excellente matière homogène, tandis que les drageons (vu leur age diffèrent) n'on donnent pas.  相似文献

Among the sources of lignocellulosic biomass that could be considered as a feedstock for a biorefinery, hemp (Cannabis sativa) is known for the quality and relative abundance of its fibre. In this work, two variations of the Feedstock Impregnation Rapid and Sequential Steam Treatment (FIRSST) process are compared for the production of both fibres and biomolecules (including liquid fuels) as the valorization of the entire carbon content of biomass is needed to reach economical viability. In the first variation, the fibres were isolated via two specific and sequential steam treatments while in the second variation, fibres were isolated using only one steam treatment. Both processes allowed the isolation of a fibre that was comparable to kraft pulp while reducing the amounts of ashes along the process. Compositions of the residual solid fibre at different steps of the treatment were evaluated using ASTM and TAPPI standard methods. Carbohydrates were identified and quantified using HPLC with an anion exchange stationary phase. The qualities of the FIRSST and Kraft pulp produced were compared using standard ATPPC methods. Both pulps showed similar indexes. The two-steps FIRSST process has leaded to direct isolation of cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin that could be suitable for the production of energy (biofuels) and high value chemicals, with small investments in terms of chemicals and energy.  相似文献

Depending on sowing month, temperatures during boll growth in the tropical dry season are potentially sub- or supra optimal for the fibre quality parameters length and strength. The aims of this research were to: (1) measure the effect of sowing date on the quality of fibre from cotton grown during the dry season as this was not known; (2) use the range in temperature created by varying sowing date in the dry season, to derive relationships with gin turnout, the fibre quality parameters length, strength and micronaire. Over three seasons, two Gossypium hirsutum (upland) cultivars and one Gossypium barbadense cultivar were sown from March to June at the Ord River (15.5°S), Western Australia. For the highest yielding sowing months of March and April, fibre length and strength were at or below market preference due to relatively low temperatures and solar radiation during early fibre development. Fibre micronaire achieved market preference at all sowing months due to favourable late season temperatures and radiation. It is likely that current G. barbadense cultivars will have short fibre when grown in the dry season. For fibre length and gin turnout quadratic responses (p < 0.05) to weighted minimum temperature were fitted for each cultivar, where the optimum minimum temperature was 18–20 and 16–17 °C, respectively. The cultivar differences in fibre properties observed here suggest that wider screening may identify G. hirsutum cultivars with suitable fibre length and strength in the dry season. It was demonstrated by weighting of temperatures for the contribution of the cohort of bolls pollinated each day; the variation in crop fibre quality and gin turnout in the field due to temperature can be predicted.  相似文献

Nowadays, certain components of non-wood annual plants such as corn stalk and industrial hemp core are considered waste materials or used in low value applications; both by-products have a very low cost. On the other hand, given the large quantities of these materials generated worldwide and their renewable character, it is reasonable to explore new routes for their exploitation. The aim of this paper is to study the potential of both corn stalk (Zea Mays L.) and industrial hemp core (Cannabis Sativa L.) fibres as a renewable source of cellulose fibres in the production of fibre-cement. For each source of fibres, a number of chemical cooking treatments were studied. The morphological properties of the fibres were determined using a scanning electron microscope and a fibre and pulp morphological analyser. Pulp refining was carried out in a PFI mill to improve the characteristics of the fibres. In the case of corn fibres, different degrees of refining were applied. The fibre flocculation process was investigated using several polyacrylamides. The process was studied by monitoring the chord size distribution in real time by means of a focused beam reflectance measurement probe.The results indicated that both pulps can be used for the production of fibre-cement, having the two types of pulp morphological similarities with the pine fibres currently used.Through the flocculation process it was concluded the floc size depends on the length of the fibres.  相似文献

Fibre damages by the decortication process have to be avoided to achieve high quality of hemp fibres (Cannabis sativa L.) for industrial use. In addition, a well-defined separation of the single fibres by the subsequent degumming process is required. The objective of the present study is to determine the growth stage at which bark and shives can be separated from unretted industrial hemp (variety ‘Kompolti’) with as little fibre damage as possible. Furthermore, the chemical composition of the bark and the molecular weight of fibre cellulose have been analysed to estimate the fibre quality that can be achieved after a degumming process. For this, the fibres have been extracted by a standardised chemical degumming process. The investigations were carried out at nine growth stages of the plants reaching from vegetative stages to senescence. Considering only the mechanical decortication of green dry stems without degumming of the bark, the results reveal that a harvest time at the beginning of seed maturity leads to easier decortication without any effect on the tensile strength of the bast. For decortication of fresh stems including a subsequent degumming process, a harvest after the flowering of the male plants results in fibre losses during decortication and to fibres of reduced fineness.  相似文献

Research and development of an innovative production system for hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) fibre for textile use requires the integration of multidisciplinary knowledge from cultivation technique to realization of end products. Research was carried out to study the effect of the agronomic factors cultivation year (2003–2004), genotype (Futura 75 and Tiborszallasi), plant population (120, 240 and 360 plants m−2) and harvesting time (beginning and full flowering) on fibre yield and quality in the whole hemp stem, and in the basal and apical stem portions separately. The study of separate stem portions was done to determine the effect on fibre quality of an innovative harvesting and processing system in which hemp stems are cut in two portions of approximately 1 m at harvest to enable processing on modern flax scutching lines.  相似文献

Harvesting products from plants for conversion into renewable resources is increasing in importance. Determination of nutrition requirements for the applicable crops is necessary, especially in regions where the biofuel feedstock crops have not been historically grown. Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), two hybrids and one variety; sweet and grain (milo) sorghums (both Sorghum bicolor L.), one variety each, and sweet corn (Zea mays var. rugosa Bonaf.), four cultivars, were provided the recommended and twice the recommended rate of fertilizer. Biomass, expressed liquid volumes and sugar contents of sweet sorghum and sweet corn were determined. Grain yields of milo and sunflower and oil content of sunflower were determined. Sweet corn stalk sugar levels were below what is expected from field corn (maize), and were not affected by fertilizer rate. Sweet sorghum biomass and sugar content were within expected ranges and not affected by fertilizer rate. Milo grain yields were higher with increased fertilizer. Seed yield in Sunflower, which was below expected levels, was inconsistently affected by fertilizer rate, years or varieties. Overall crops year and cultivar/variety had more effect on results than did fertilizer. There does not appear to be a reason to provide fertilizer above recommended rates in production of these crops.  相似文献

Aligned epoxy-matrix composites were made from hemp fibres defibrated with the fungi Phlebia radiata Cel 26 and Ceriporiopsis subvermispora previously used for biopulping of wood. The fibres produced by cultivation of P. radiata Cel 26 were more cellulose rich (78%, w/w) than water-retted hemp due to more degradation of pectin and lignin. The defibrated hemp fibres had higher fibre stiffness (88–94 GPa) than the hemp yarn (60 GPa), which the fibre twisting in hemp yarn might explain. Even though mild processing was applied, the obtained fibre strength (643 MPa) was similar to the strength of traditionally produced hemp yarn (677 MPa). The fibre strength and stiffness properties are derived from composite data using the rule of mixtures model. The fibre tensile strength increased linearly with cellulose content to 850 MPa for pure cellulose. The fibre stiffness increased also versus the cellulose content and cellulose crystallinity and reached a value of 125 GPa for pure crystalline cellulose.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of the elasticity, microstructure and thermal stability of fibres (thickness ranging from 43.4 to 189.4 µm) isolated from pineapple leaves (PALF), coconut coir (COIR), banana leaf-stem (BAN) and oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) reported in this study. Statistical analysis of the mechanical properties derived from tensile test to rupture reveals significant differences (P<0.05) in the fibre strength (σ), stiffness (E) and extensibility (parameterized by the strain to rupture, ?). It is observed that COIR fibres yield the smallest strength, σ (=99.8±22.5 MPa), and stiffness, E (= 0.5±0.1 GPa), while PALF fibres yield the largest σ (=639.5±301.6 MPa) and E (=7.1±3.1 GPa); PALF fibres exhibit the smallest ? (=0.11±0.03) but OPEFB fibres yield the largest ? (=2.0±1.3). From scanning electron micrographs, it is observed that cellulose fibril rupture predominates in OPEFB, COIR and BAN fibres; a large proportion of the cellulose fibrils fail by pullout in PALF fibres. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals that all fibres are thermally stable up to 250 °C; the fibre residue ranges from 30 to 80 wt% after heating to 500 °C. In particular, BAN experiences the highest weight loss and PALF experiences the lowest weight loss. The findings lend to a simple approach for determining the performance of the composites by assessing the type of natural fibres for reinforcing polymeric matrices.  相似文献

The biorefining of grass offers an opportunity to integrate primary production agriculture with the extraction of fibre. The study was aimed at developing protocols for processing ryegrass to determine fibre content and to generate visible and near infrared reflectance (Vis-NIR) calibrations for estimating fibre fineness with the aid of a new reference airflow method. The method for determining fineness of processed fibres has been adapted from flax fibre protocols. A Vis-NIR calibration using partial least squares (PLS) regression method was employed to generate models with a calibration set consisting of 85 samples obtained from fresh and ensiled grasses. The PLS model was successfully validated with 21 independent samples with a prediction error of 1.26 dtex. An optimised PLS model (r2 = 0.86) consisting of 106 samples has been developed. The quality assurance protocols could be used for assessing fibre content and quality of silage, hay and fresh grass.  相似文献

Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata Wall. ex Nees) is a medicinal herb of tropical south east Asia and native to India and Sri Lanka. It has been used herb for liver ailment in all prevailing systems of medicine viz. Ayurvedic, Unani, Homeopathic and modern throughout most of the south East Asian countries viz. China, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Burma, and Vietnam, etc. Commercially cultivation of Kalmegh is done through seeds. Optimal germination potential, temperature and first as well as final count day are three primary parameters for developing the seed quality standards. Germination of Kalmegh variety ‘CIM-Megha’ was carried out at six constant temperatures at an interval of every ‘5 °C’ from ‘15 to 40 °C’ temperatures coupled with 16 h light and 8 h dark photo period. The temperature of ‘25 °C’ was found optimally suitable with ‘94.6’ and ‘23.6’ percentage of germination and germination energy, respectively, while the temperature at ‘40 °C’ was deleterious with no germination. Significant decrease in percentage of germination and germination energy was observed at ‘15 °C’, ‘20 °C’, ‘30 °C’ and ‘35 °C’ of temperature in comparison to ‘25 °C’. The study further revealed that days 5-6 and days 7-9 after seed sowing were the ideal for first and final count, respectively for seed germination of Kalmegh.  相似文献

Camelina is an oilseed crop which is being commercially produced globally as feedstock for biodiesel. Being a non-edible oil bearing low input crop owing to its low fertilizer and water requirement, fits well for biofuel production. In India, targets for biofuel blending has been set by New Biofuel Policy-2018 and to meet these targets efforts are being made to harness the potential of available feedstock in the country. Among these feedstock, contribution of short gestation oilseed bearing crop has been very important. Camelina has been introduced in India during 2009–10 as experimental crop by DIBER, DRDO. Since then various efforts have made to standardize the production technology of this crop under various agro-climatic regions of the country, crop improvement, oil quality analysis and development of high energy by-products. Camelina has various advantages to offer for Indian biofuel sector. This paper reviews the potential of this crop for Indian Biofuel scenario.  相似文献

Coconut fibres were subjected to chemical treatment to obtain softer and finer fibres, suitable to blend with other finer fibre like jute. The chemical softening recipe was optimized using Box-Behnken design of experiments as 40 % Na2S, 10 % NaOH and 6 % Na2CO3, which notably reduced the fineness (33 %) and flexural rigidity (74 %) and improved tensile property of coconut fibre. Effect of softening of coconut fibre on its process performance was studied in high speed mechanized spinning system at different blend ratios with jute. Blending with jute assists in spinning of coconut fibre to produce yarn of 520 tex at production rate of 5-6 kg/h, as compared to 15 kg/day for hand spun 5300 tex raw coconut fibre yarn in manual system. Analysis of blended yarn structure in terms of packing density, radial distribution of fiber components (SEM) and mass irregularity were investigated. SEM shows yarns made from softened coconut fibre -jute blends are more compact than raw coconut fibre -jute blend yarns. Coconut fibres were preferentially migrated to core of the yarn. Major yarn properties viz., tensile strength, and flexural rigidity of raw and chemically softened blended yarns were compared against their finest possible 100 % coconut fibre yarn properties. Yarn made up to 50:50 chemically softened coconut fibre-jute blend showed much better spinning performance, and having superior property in terms of reduced diameter, higher compactness, strength, initial modulus and less flexural rigidity than 100 % raw, 100 % chemically softened coconut fibre rope, and raw coconut fibre-jute blend yarns.  相似文献

Often overlooked is the importance of early-maturing rice varieties with their ability to escape droughts, avoid floods, and in some localities, open up the opportunity for double cropping. Most varieties grown in the tropics until the last half century matured in 150 to 180 days or longer and were photoperiod sensitive. However, non-photoperiod sensitive one-hundred-day varieties were grown in the Champa Kingdom in what is now Central Vietnam centuries ago. How these varieties moved into Song Dynasty China and the impact of the early-ripening rice on population growth in South China is well documented. However, the origin of the Champa varieties is less clear. According to a recent DNA test (see below), the Champa varieties belong to the aus sub-population. The aus have the characteristics of both indica and japonica and originated in the hill areas of what are now Eastern India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Because the Champa Kingdom adopted the Indian language and religion, at least in the higher courts, it seems logical that the Champa rice must have been disseminated from the hilly areas in the Indian sub-continent to Central Vietnam and eventually to China—first Fujian and later to the Yangtze region during the Song Dynasty in the eleventh century.  相似文献

The objective of this work is to study characteristics of chemical pulps (soda cooking process) and of paper obtained from Alfa, also known as Stipa tenacissima. For this purpose, Tunisian Alfa stems, and both unbleached and bleached pulps were characterized by determining their chemical composition as well as their morphological and physical properties. Through a detailed comparison with the other pulps obtained from various species, we show that the properties of Alfa stem fibres are intermediate between those of non-wood and wood plants, and most often close to those of Eucalyptus fibres. Refining process (PFI mill device) was then applied to the unbleached and bleached Alfa pulps. The modifications of the morphological properties of the fibres and the drainability and water retention values of the pulps were studied as a function of the refining degree. Here again, Alfa fibres exhibit a behaviour similar to that of Eucalyptus fibres, as the fibre shortening is very limited during the refining process. Finally, conventional handsheets with a basis weight of 65 g/m2 were prepared from the unrefined and refined pulps. Their characterization showed that Alfa based papers present low density values and quite good mechanical properties, which are significantly enhanced by the refining treatment, particularly for the unbleached pulp. This study demonstrates the high potentiality of this non-wood species for papermaking applications.  相似文献
