Respiration rates of seven species of intertidal sea anemones from the south-western Cape, South Africa were measured with and without illumination to determine whether zooxanthellae contributed to their nutritional needs. Light had no significant effect on oxygen exchange in any of the species, suggesting that all are azoox- anthellate. Diets of anemones from two sites, Wooley’s Pool in False Bay and Blouberg on the Atlantic coast some 20 km north of Cape Town, were examined by gut content analysis. Seven species occurred at Wooley’s Pool, but only one (Bunodactis reynaudi) at Blouberg. At Wooley’s Pool 39.4% of anemones contained food, while at Blouberg only 7.4% did so. A wide spectrum of prey taxa were consumed by the various anemone species, although considerable dietary overlap occurred. Pelecypods, gastropods and isopods were ingested by all the species examined. Pelecypods dominated the diet of B. reynaudi at Blouberg (91% occurrence), but were recorded in only 42% of the same species at Wooley’s Pool. The frequency of occurrence of pelecypods in the guts of the other species ranged from 9% (Anthothoe stimpsoni) to 28% (Actinia equina). Gastropods were the main prey items eaten by Anthopleura michaelseni (67% occurrence), Pseudactinia flagellifera (43%) and Pseu- dactinia varia (42%), while isopods were the most frequently occurring constituent in the diets of A. stimpsoni (62%) and Bunodosoma capensis (16%). A. equina was the only species for which insects were a regular part of the diet (26% occurrence). Platyhelminths were found only in the guts of B. capensis (11%); holothurians only in B. reynaudi at Wooley’s Pool (2%), and crinoids only in P. flagellifera (2%). Large quantities of algal material and indigestible debris were also ingested, indicating that sea anemones are non-selective feeders. Cluster analysis and multi-dimensional scaling techniques revealed four distinct feeding groups among the anemone assemblages. These are characterized as microphagous (A. stimpsoni), generalist (S. capensis and A. equina), mac- rophagous (S. reynaudi at Wooley’s Pool, A. michaelseni, P. flagellifera and P. varia) and specialist bivalve- feeder (B. reynaudi at Blouberg).  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the diet of Cape clawless otters Aonyx capensis feeding in the surf zone in False Bay, Western Cape Province, South Africa, were investigated by spraint (faecal) analysis. The most common prey species, during all seasons, was the Cape rock crab, Plagusia chabrus. The next most important prey species was the Cape rock lobster, Jasus lalandii, with the fish species Clinus superciliosus being equally important in winter. Other prey were fresh-water crabs, Potamonautes perlatus, octopus, Octopus granulatus, and 17 other species of fish, frogs and mammals. In winter and autumn the most important prey category was fish while in spring and summer, crustaceans were the most important. Diversity of prey was lowest in winter, increasing through the seasons from spring to autumn.  相似文献

The lengths, abundance patterns and feeding habits of three species of benthic-feeding teleosts, Lithognathus mormyrus, Lithognathus lithognathus and Umbrina capensis from King’s Beach, Algoa Bay are presented. Multiple regression analysis was used to elucidate the influence of the physical environment on the abundance of L. mormyrus. The feeding habits of these species were analysed on a quantitative basis by means of gravimetry and the frequency of occurrence of prey items.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the rate of gut evacuation in Barbus aeneus was investigated in two ways. In the first, juvenile fish, kept under conditions of constant temperature, were fed marked food items and the time elapsing until these appeared in the faeces was noted. In the second, fish of a range of sizes were caught in the P.K. le Roux dam and immediately placed in cages in the dam to prevent their access to food. Groups of fish were sacrificed at intervals and the contents of standardized gut sections weighed. The field experiment was carried out in summer and in winter. The laboratory experiment yielded the relationship: P = 6270 × t-2,11 where P is the passage time in hours and T is the temperature in °C. This gives passage times of the order of 8 h at 25°C and 39 h at 11,5°C. The field experiment indicated that there was an exponential relationship between degree of fullness and rate of evacuation, and that complete evacuation required about 24 h in summer, but more than 5 days in winter.  相似文献

Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) have been introduced to many South African river systems where they become invasive and pose a threat to native biota. The diets of small (32–138 mm TL) and large (192–448 mm TL) sized bass were analysed and compared in a marine fish nursery area in the lower Kowie River on the warm temperate coast of South Africa over a one-year period from March 2009 to February 2010. Dietary differences were detected between the two size groups. Amphipod sp. (% index of relative importance (IRI) = 69.2) and dipterans (Insecta) (%IRI = 21.9) dominated gut contents of small bass while larger bass preyed mostly on odonates (Insecta) (%IRI = 16.3) and the brachyuran Potamonautes sidneyi (%IRI = 80.0). Fish prey was of low importance during this study but comparisons with previous work on the lower Kowie River showed that when the river is flowing, young marine fish recruiting into the freshwater from the estuary become important prey items. These data suggest that in the lower Kowie River bass utilize invertebrate prey at low fish prey abundance and opportunistically feed on migrant fish when these are available.  相似文献

Over the period October 1978 to April 1979 a total of 180 specimens of the estuarine round-herring Gilchristella aestuarius and 218 specimens of the Cape silverside Hepsetia breviceps were collected for stomach content analysis in the Swartvlei system and Groenvlei on the southern Cape coast. The diets of these two species were found to be fairly similar, with crustaceans forming their main food source in both water bodies. 6. aestuarius appears to filter feed throughout most of its length range, although the bigger food items are probably actively caught. Young H. breviceps also filter feeds, but it seems to catch most of its food actively as it grows older. Some H. breviceps consumed adult polychaetes and tube-dwelling amphipods covered by sand particles, indicating that these were probably removed from the substrate.  相似文献

An analysis of cephalopod remains collected from jackass penguin Spheniscus demersus regurgitations and stomachs at St Croix Island, Algoa Bay, in 1976 and 1977 revealed the presence of three cephalopod species. Most common was Loligo reynaudi, with Heterotuthus sp. and Argonauta argo constituting trace items. Beak measurements were used to estimate dorsal mantle lengths and wet masses of cephalopods taken by penguins. The dominant cephalopod taken by penguins was the same species as that harvested by commercial fisheries. Despite an overlap in the size range of squid taken by penguins and trawlers, penguins tended to take smaller squid and did not take the larger squid landed by trawlers. The seasonal occurrence of squid in the penguin diet in 1976 and 1977 was the opposite of the abundance of squid in the area as reflected by trawler landings. This is explained in terms of the abundance and preference for other prey items. It is suggested that penguins take fish in preference to squid because of the relatively higher energy content and food value of fish.  相似文献

Abstract

The most commonly occurring grass species in the False Thornveld (Acocks, 1953; veld type no. 21) were clipped before and after grazing on veld in good and poor condition at different times of the year. Herbage yield per species was expressed per unit basal tuft area, and the difference in yield before and after grazing was considered to reflect the production of available forage. Themeda triandra produced more forage than any other species at all times of the year. Sporobolus fimbriatus generally produced the second highest amount of available forage. Cymbopogon plurinodis, despite having the second highest herbage yield before grazing, was not grazed to a significant extent. On the basis of the results, Themeda triandra and Sporobolus fimbriatus were identified as key grass species in the False Thornveld of the Eastern Cape.  相似文献

Collections of chondrichthyan egg-cases cast ashore at two sites along the South African coastline were identified and examined for cause of mortality. A total of 574 egg-cases collected from False Bay could be attributed to five species of scyliorhinid shark, two skates and the elephantfish or chimaera, while the 538 egg-cases collected from Port Alfred belonged to four scyliorhinid sharks and two skate species. At both sites eggs of shy-sharks of the genus Haploblepharus made up more than 70% of the samples, followed by skates (5% in False Bay and 19% in Port Alfred) and then catsharks of the genus Poroderma (1 and 7% respectively). Haploblepharus egg-cases generally displayed relatively high rates of hatching success of over 60% and predation rates of 18-30%. Haploblepharus fuscus was the exception with a low hatching success of 37% and a predation rate of 40%. Poroderma egg-cases suffered predation losses of 43%, and had a hatching success of 47%. Skate egg-cases displayed non-predator induced egg mortalities of up to 35%, but predation rates of less than 14%. Hatching success was moderate at 57%. The holes found in egg-cases could be categorised into five types, of which four were clearly predator boreholes. The most abundant of these was shown to be caused by whelks of the genus Bumupena.  相似文献

The red steenbras (Petrus rupestris) is endemic to the south and south-east coasts of South Africa and is the largest member of the family Sparidae. Morphometric relationships between length and mass are given for whole and eviscerated fish. The size distribution of P. rupestris is related to locality and water depth. Juveniles and sub-adults are common in shallow (< 50 m) Cape waters between False Bay and East London. Adults are more common offshore, in deep waters (> 50 m), especially off the coast between East London and Coffee Bay, throughout the year. P. rupestris were found to be rudimentary hermaphrodites. The development of the functional sexes, and the occurrence of sexual dichromatism, are described. Sexual maturity is attained at about 575 mm fork length in those fishes in the spawning areas. Reproductively ripe fishes were taken from Transkei, East London and a small collection was made from the Agulhas Bank. Peak spawning is between August and October. Current management regulations are discussed and advantages of large marine reserves in conservation of this mobile apex predator are outlined.  相似文献

The diet and food selectivity of juvenile (< 100 mm S.L.) Acanthopagrus berda were investigated in Beachwood creek, north of Durban. Fish and benthic samples were taken from November 1986 to September 1987. The diet of juvenile A. berda was varied but crustaceans, mainly amphipods, were the dominant prey item. Ivlev's (1961) electivity index revealed a positive selection for amphipods, tanaids and fish scales.  相似文献

Rock lobsters, Jasus lalandii, may play an important role in structuring the communities on shallow reef ecosystems and have recently increased in density in the area between Cape Hangklip and Danger Point on the southwest coast of South Africa. This has probably resulted in increased predation on natural populations of smooth turban shells (Turbo cidaris) and pink-lipped topshells (Oxystete sinensis), both of which are proposed targets for small-scale commercial fisheries. This study examines the size selectivity, prey species preferences and consumption rates of rock lobsters feeding on these two winkle species. Rock lobsters showed a strong preference for small O. sinensis, and were limited to taking a maximum (or critical) size of prey, which increased linearly with rock-lobster size. By contrast, rock lobsters of all size classes tested were able to crack and consume a full size range of T. cidaris, and no size preferences were evident. When the two gastropods were offered simultaneously, rock lobsters preferentially consumed the thinner shelled O. sinensis. Consumption rates increased linearly with rock-lobster size. Population consumption rates indicate that rock lobsters will have a profound effect on winkle stocks in the area, even if winkles constituted less than 1% of the diet. This in turn suggests that commercial exploitation of these stocks is unlikely to remain sustainable.  相似文献

Knowledge of what pest species are eating is important to determine their impact on stored food products and to plan management strategies accordingly. In this study, we investigated the food habits of 2 rodents, Rattus rattus (ship rat) and Mus musculus castaneus (house mouse) as well as an insectivore, Suncus murinus (shrew), present in human dwellings. Both a microhistological approach and a DNA barcoding approach were used in the present study. Following DNA extraction, amplification was performed using group‐specific primers targeting birds, plants and invertebrates. Resulting polymerase chain reaction products were sequenced and analyzed to identify the different prey species present in the gut contents. The findings from the application of both techniques were in agreement, but the detection of prey type with each technique was different. The DNA barcoding approach gave greater species‐level identification when compared to the microhistological method, especially for the invertebrate and avian prey. Overall, with both techniques, 23 prey taxa were identified in the gut contents of the 3 species, including 15 plants, 7 insects and a single bird species. We conclude that with a selection of suitable “barcode genes” and optimization of polymerase chain reaction protocols, DNA barcoding can provide more accurate and faster results. Prey detection from either technique alone can bias the dietary information. Hence, combining prey information of both microhistological analysis and DNA barcoding is recommended to study pest diet, especially if the pest is an omnivore or insectivore species.  相似文献

The composition and seasonal variability of a False Bay suprabenthic reef-fish assemblage was investigated monthly at a protected reef site (to a depth of 25 m) for 14 months. In total, 25 484 fish from 28 species (26 demersal) were counted. Sparids dominated the assemblage (50 % of species and 87.3 % of individuals), followed by cheilodactylids (15.4 % of species and 7.5 % of individuals). Pachymetopon blochii (30.6 %), Sarpa salpa (17.7 %), Boopsoidea inornata (16.1 %), Chrysoblephus laticeps (10.4 %) and Spondyliosoma emarginatum (9.2 %) were the five most abundant species, while the ten most abundant species made up over 93 % of censused individuals. Composition was relatively stable year round, irrespective of water temperature variations, with 16 of the 26 reef-fish species censused encountered during more than 10 monthly censuses. Triakus megalopterus and large Chrysoblephus gibbiceps were the only species whose abundance appeared to vary seasonally.  相似文献

Stress levels in organisms provide a rapid measure for assessing population health. Handling and capture stress, however, cause error in blood measures, so this method is rapidly being replaced by assessing levels of stress metabolites in faeces. This eliminates the source of error because there is a lag period between stress perception and the resultant stress metabolite accumulation within faeces. This lag period is correlated with specific intestinal passage time, a measure that can vary greatly between taxa, particularly amongst ectotherms. Due to two deleterious consequences associated with extended exposure of the metabolites to the intestinal environment, species that exhibit long and variable intestinal passage times are not good candidates for metabolite studies. We measured gut and intestinal passage times in Trachylepis margaritifer to ascertain whether it would be an appropriate candidate for stress metabolite studies. We first tested if barium sulphate in the meal had an effect on gut passage time at three ambient temperatures (25, 27 and 32 °C). Barium sulphate had no effect; however, temperature had a significant effect with an unexpected pattern: gut passage time was fastest at 32 °C but was slower at 27 °C than at 25 °C. We then used X‐ray technology and barium sulphate‐loaded meals to measure gut and intestinal passage times at 25 and 27 °C. This allowed us to observe which parts of the digestive process were responsible for increased passage times at 27 °C: the faster passage time at 25 °C was due to faster intestinal passage time; there was no difference in gastric emptying time. We assess the species to be a suitable candidate for studies using faeces to measure stress. It is imperative however, that the effect of temperature on passage rates is known and taken into account in such studies.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the taxonomic status of the melanistic, girdled lizard, Cordylus cordylus niger, occurring in the Cape Peninsula and the Saldanha Bay area, South Africa, character variation among populations of the C. cordylus complex in the section of the Cape Province south of 32°3C latitude and west of 19°30' longitude was analysed. Variation for 92 external morphological characters at 54 localities was determined. Distinct patterns of interlocality variation were observed in only eight characters, but interestingly, these patterns were concordant in all eight cases. The observed patterns are interpreted as indicating that three phenotypic forms of the nominate species occur in the south-western Cape, namely a coastal melanistic form (= C. c. niger), occurring in insular and peninsular situations along the coast; a montane melanistic form occurring at relatively high altitudes along the western section of the Cape Fold Mountains; and the typical form (= C. c. cordylus), occurring commonly along the coastal lowlands, but also further inland at some places.  相似文献

Species richness of the intertidal macroinfauna of exposed sandy beaches around South America is reviewed in relation to geographic location. This macroinfauna is dominated by cirolanid isopods (Excirolana), bivalves (Mesodesma and Donax) and opheliid and spionid polychaetes. In general, the upper shore of tropical and subtropical beaches is characterized by crabs (Ocypodidae), whereas on temperate beaches it is dominated by talitrid amphipods and cirolanid isopods. The middle shore is primarily occupied by cirolanids and bivalves, and hippid crabs, bivalves and amphipods dominate the lower beach. Generally, species richness increases from upper to lower beach levels. Studies carried out on exposed sandy beaches of south-central Chile (ca. 40°S) show that different beach states harbour differences in species richness, with the greatest species richness on dissipative beaches, and the least on beaches with reflective characteristics, a pattern also observed in Uruguay.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscope investigations were made of the mandibles, feeding baskets and gut armatures of Mesopodopsis slabberi and Gastrosaccus psammodytes collected in Algoa Bay, southern Africa. Comparison of the structure of the feeding appendages of these two marine mysid species allows dietary inferences supplementing data derived from gut content analyses. Both species occur in abundance in the surf zone off sandy beaches where they contribute significantly to energy transfer through the food web.  相似文献

Feeding habits and trophic relationships among three mormyrid species (Petrocephalus bovei, Marcusenius ussheri and Marcusenius furcidens) were assessed in the man-made Lake Ayame in Ivory Coast. The index of preponderance combining the occurrence and weight percentages of the identified prey items showed that these three mormyrid species mainly feed on invertebrates, especially aquatic insects. Petrocephalus bovei mainly feeds on chaoborid larvae, whereas both Marcusenius species preferentially feed on chironomid larvae. This segregation of food items associated with the relative abundance of chironomid larvae may reduce interspecific competition between these three fish species, and may therefore allow their coexistence. Horn’s food overlap index revealed highly significant similarities in the trophic spectrum between both Marcusenius species, and for the dry as well as the rainy season.  相似文献

The diet of the skink, Eumeces chinensis (Lacertilia: Scincidae), in Xiamen (Amoy), China was examined using stomach analysis during April and May, and its selection of prey size was tested by feeding trials. Insects (primarily Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, and Orthoptera), gastropods and arachnids constituted most of the E. chinensis diet, but earthworms, leeches, crustaceans and fish were also consumed. In the field, male skinks ate more prey items that were 11–20 mm in length than other size classes. When presented with a choice of different‐sized prey in the laboratory, male E. chinensis exhibited a strong preference for prey items 11–20 mm in length over other size classes. The relationship between prey size and handling time was exponential, indicating that there is an upper limit to the ability of E. chinensis to process prey. Mean energy intake for handling different‐sized prey showed that selection of midsizeclass prey items would provide male E. chinensis with the most energy‐efficient prey option. These results indicate that prey size selection in E. chinensis favors maximization of rates of energy intake, which is in agreement with optimal foraging theory.  相似文献
