The prevalence of heterophyid (Digenea: Heterophyidae) encysted metacercariae (EMC) in its second intermediate host, the fish Mugil spp. and Tilapia spp. was studied in a subtropical permanent Lake in northeastern Egypt. Seasonal changes in the occurrence of the EMC in different fish hosts were monitored in a longitudinal field survey lasting 12 months from June 2006 to May 2007. This study tested two hypotheses; (i) prevalence and intensity of heterophyid EMC fluctuate seasonally throughout the year and (ii) variation in the prevalence and intensity of heterophyid EMC is host-dependent. A total of 832 fish specimens comprising 5 species collected from Manzala Lake, northeastern Egypt were examined by artificial gastric juice digestion for EMC. All five species of brackish water fish examined were found to harbor the EMC of the family Heterophyidae in their muscles. The overall infection prevalence of EMC over 12 months was 23.2%. The adult flukes recovered from puppies experimentally infected with morphologically different metacercariae from different fish species were compatible with six species belong to five genera of Heterophyidae, namely, Heterophyes heterophyes, Heterophyes aequalis, Pygidiopsis genata, Phagicola sp., Haplorchis sp. and Stictodora sp. EMC of H. heterophyes were most abundant, detected in 56% of the total fish examined. P. genata was ranked second, followed by Phagicola sp., H. aequalis, Haplorchis sp., and Stictodora sp., respectively. Seasonal differences in infection were observed for all heterophyid species studied in all fish species examined. Heterophyid infections reached peak prevalences during the summer season 38.2% followed by spring 26.6% and autumn 19.3% seasons, whereas the lowest prevalence was recorded in the winter 8.7%. Intensity of heterophyid EMC followed the same seasonal pattern, being high during summer months and low in winter months. All fish species were infected with all the heterophyid digeneans, but with different prevalence. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed with reference to host, climatic and biotic factors.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the reproducibility and accuracy of computed tomographic (CT) measurements of pituitary gland dimensions in healthy dogs. ANIMALS: 35 healthy sexually intact adult dogs. PROCEDURES: 2 observers independently viewed CT images of the skull in 35 dogs twice. Pituitary gland height, width, length, and volume and pituitary gland height-to-brain area ratio (P:B ratio) were measured or calculated. Intraobserver and interobserver agreement indexes (AIs) were calculated for pituitary gland dimensions. Computed tomography was performed also on 5 phantoms, and both observers measured phantom dimensions twice. True-value AIs were calculated for the phantom study. RESULTS: The mean +/- SD interobserver AI between observer 1 and 2 for pituitary gland height and the P:B ratio was 0.90 +/- 0.07. The intraobserver AI for pituitary gland height and the P:B ratio was 0.97 +/- 0.04 for observer 1 and 0.94 +/- 0.04 for observer 2. The intra and interobserver AIs for the other dimensions were lower than those for pituitary gland height and the P:B ratio. All phantom dimensions on CT images were underestimated significantly, compared with their true values. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The intra- and interobserver AIs for pituitary gland dimension measurements on CT images were high. However, the same observer preferably should perform serial measurements. Window settings influence pituitary gland dimension measurements, and predetermined window settings are recommended to make comparisons among dogs. Pituitary gland dimension measurements made from CT images in our study underestimated the true values.  相似文献

Bacterial gill disease (BGD) (causative agent: Flavobacterium branchiophilum) has been a persistent problem in early-rearing salmonids in the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) fish hatchery system. Retrospective epidemiological investigations of BGD diagnoses and treatments in OMNR fish hatcheries during the period 1991–2001 were conducted using University of Guelph Fish Health Laboratory and OMNR central office data. All investigations were conducted at the lot-level, which is the major within-hatchery-level of population aggregation. Survivorship of BGD diagnosis in early-rearing lots within seven individual hatcheries ranged from 84.2 to 100%; within individual species groups, survivorship was lowest (84.6%) in brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) lots. Annual risk percentages (cumulative incidence) for BGD diagnosis within hatchery and species groups varied considerably among years. Multivariable proportional hazards survival analysis indicated that the species brook trout, and the Spring (March–May) season, were significantly associated with treatment for BGD. Combined, these results emphasize the importance of hatchery, species, and time on the development of BGD. Future observational research on this disease must consider these factors in their design and analysis.  相似文献

2007年5~12月,对中国兴凯湖鱼类资源进行了系统调查,统计渔获物2314kg,生物学测定1504尾,经鉴定共有鱼类41种,分别隶属于6目11科35属,其中鲤科鱼类27种,占全部种类的65.85%,比2001年的调查数据(48种)减少7种。中国兴凯湖2007年渔产量约为415t,其中餐和兴凯油[歺又鱼]两种小型经济鱼类所占比例最大,约为72.3%,而主要渔获对象翘嘴红鲌仅占到了总产量的9.6%。兴凯湖鱼类的群落结构发生了改变,渔获物个体趋向低龄化、小型化,且产量下降明显。本研究通过对鱼类种群衰退因素的分析,提出了种群恢复与保护策略。  相似文献

2003年7月~2004年5月和2007年8月~2008年9月,对湖南壶瓶山国家级自然保护区鱼类资源进行了调查与监测。研究结果显示:保护区内及周边社区的人为活动对该区鱼类多样性有较大的影响;2008年该保护区记录到鱼类41种,与2004年的调查结果相比,有10种鱼未发现,且鱼类个体均重小于20 g的有22种(占53.66%)。这表明该区鱼类群落结构变化较大,小型化趋势明显,鱼类资源正面临着较为严重的危机,这是由不合理的鱼类资源利用方式、水域生态环境变化等多种因素造成的。为此,作者提出了如下保护对策:加大保护宣教力度、加强执法和法制建设、实施生态修复工程、恢复土著鱼类资源、开展鱼类资源保护与监测。  相似文献

An analysis of cephalopod remains collected from jackass penguin Spheniscus demersus regurgitations and stomachs at St Croix Island, Algoa Bay, in 1976 and 1977 revealed the presence of three cephalopod species. Most common was Loligo reynaudi, with Heterotuthus sp. and Argonauta argo constituting trace items. Beak measurements were used to estimate dorsal mantle lengths and wet masses of cephalopods taken by penguins. The dominant cephalopod taken by penguins was the same species as that harvested by commercial fisheries. Despite an overlap in the size range of squid taken by penguins and trawlers, penguins tended to take smaller squid and did not take the larger squid landed by trawlers. The seasonal occurrence of squid in the penguin diet in 1976 and 1977 was the opposite of the abundance of squid in the area as reflected by trawler landings. This is explained in terms of the abundance and preference for other prey items. It is suggested that penguins take fish in preference to squid because of the relatively higher energy content and food value of fish.  相似文献

Instantaneous intake is central to the understanding of large herbivore foraging strategies and rangeland ecology. Unfortunately, its measurement under field conditions remains challenging because of the difficulty of estimating bite mass. The hand plucking method provides a simple, noninvasive method of estimating bite masses and thus instantaneous intake of grazing herbivores. However, many authors questioned its accuracy and interobserver repeatability. In this study, we tested the accuracy and the repeatability of the hand plucking method using four observers and two herbivore species (i.e., cattle and goats). We compared hand plucked bite mass estimates to actual bite mass of bites taken by the herbivores on natural patches of grass. Training of the observers was fundamental to obtaining accurate bite mass measurements. The mean daily accuracy of the observers’ bite mass estimates increased from 60–80% to 80–94% within 5 d. After training, the relationship between bite mass estimates and actual bite mass was linear and not significantly different from a Y = X relationship. This means that individual bite mass estimates were centered on the real values and thus positive and negative errors canceled each other when combined. As a result, estimates of cumulative intake over about 10 feeding stations had accuracies of over 95%. Furthermore, neither the observer identity nor the herbivore species affected the accuracy of the measurements. The categorization of bites into different size categories proved to be essential in achieving accurate measurements. When observers are trained, hand plucking is a reliable and accurate method of estimating bites mass and instantaneous intake of grazing herbivores. This has important implications for rangeland research and management, as hand plucking is often the only practicable method available for estimating instantaneous intake of free-ranging herbivores.  相似文献

The composition and seasonal variability of a False Bay suprabenthic reef-fish assemblage was investigated monthly at a protected reef site (to a depth of 25 m) for 14 months. In total, 25 484 fish from 28 species (26 demersal) were counted. Sparids dominated the assemblage (50 % of species and 87.3 % of individuals), followed by cheilodactylids (15.4 % of species and 7.5 % of individuals). Pachymetopon blochii (30.6 %), Sarpa salpa (17.7 %), Boopsoidea inornata (16.1 %), Chrysoblephus laticeps (10.4 %) and Spondyliosoma emarginatum (9.2 %) were the five most abundant species, while the ten most abundant species made up over 93 % of censused individuals. Composition was relatively stable year round, irrespective of water temperature variations, with 16 of the 26 reef-fish species censused encountered during more than 10 monthly censuses. Triakus megalopterus and large Chrysoblephus gibbiceps were the only species whose abundance appeared to vary seasonally.  相似文献

Intertidal fish communities in the south·western Cape have a high density and biomass, implying that the fish are important con· sumers in the ntertidal zone. Stomach content analyses of 20 species were undertaken to ascertain which food resources are most heavily exploited and the extent to which the co-existing fish compete for the same food resources. Three prey types, arnphipods, isopods and polychaetes, occur in the diets of almost all the species examined and together comprise more than half the total volume consumed by 14 of the species. Despite the overlap in food types consumed, there was considerable subdivi· sion of the resource, much of which may be explained in terms of horizontal and vertical distribution patterns of the various fish species, their habitat preferences, mouth sizes and changes in diet during growth. The standing stock of food in the pools is thought to be too low to support the resident fish populations, suggesting that some food, at least, is obtained outside the pools while the tide is in. For this reason, the fish are considered to be concentrated in the pools at low tide, indicating that the availability of suitable pool habitats may be important in con· trolling the denSities of intertidal fish communities.  相似文献

In a three-year survey of myxosporean infections of the bleak (Alburnus alburnus), involving the examination of 205 fish specimens from the River Danube and 50 from Lake Balaton, four Myxobolus species (two gill parasites, one fin parasite and a species parasitising the skeletal muscles) were detected. Two of the species could be identified as M. alburni and M. obesus. Of the other two species, the gill parasite proved to be a hitherto undescribed species which is described here as a new species by the name of M. margitae. One of the two gill-parasitic species, M. obesus, formed plasmodia in the respiratory lamellae of the gill filaments, while the plasmodia of M. margitae n. sp. were formed in the afferent artery of the primary gill filaments. The plasmodia containing spores morphologically identifiable with the species M. alburni were located in the connective tissue between the fin rays. The less frequently found muscle-parasitic Myxobolus species has not been identified precisely. The plasmodia of M. obesus were found in the fish in May and June, while those of M. alburni and M. margitae n. sp. in July and August. The prevalence of infection in fish examined in these periods was 15.5% for M. obesus, 11.5% for M. margitae and 14.0% for M. alburni.  相似文献

Empirical estimates of pathogen prevalence in samples of fish may underestimate true prevalence because available detection techniques are incapable of perfect detection. Trout of several species were collected from enzootic (Myxobolus cerebralis, causative agent in whirling disease) habitats, and individual fish were examined for presence of the parasite two or six times by one of four methods: pepsin-trypsin digest (brown trout Salmo trutta), plankton centrifuge (brown trout), polymerase chain reaction (rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss), or histopathology (brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis). The presence-absence data were modeled for prevalence of infection (psi) and probability of detection (p) of the parasite via occupancy models that accounted for imperfect detection of the organism. Based on estimates from the most-supported model for comparison, two myxospore concentration methods underestimated prevalence by about 12% for whole-head results and 34% for the expected value of half-head analysis. Polymerase chain reaction and histopathology gave virtually the same prevalence estimates for whole-head results as the best models but underestimated prevalence by about 6% and 12%, respectively, for the expected value of half-head analysis. The probability of detecting the parasite in a single survey of a fish head, conditional on the parasite's presence, was 0.66 for myxospore concentration methods, 0.81 for histopathology, and 1.0 (left halves) or 0.89 (right halves) for polymerase chain reaction. The occupancy models used in this study may be extended to large-scale monitoring of M. cerebralis to estimate expansion or contraction of the parasite's range over time.  相似文献

An elongated sacral lamina has been described as one of the contributing factors for dogs with cauda equina syndrome due to degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLSS); however, published evidence is lacking on the accuracy of radiographic screening for the presence of this lesion. Objectives of this prospective, cross‐sectional cadaver study were to describe the accuracy and repeatability of detection of the cranial sacral lamina margin on plain lateral radiographs of the lumbosacral junction in dogs. Twenty‐five medium and large breed canine cadavers were radiographed before and after placement of a radiopaque hook in the cranial margin of the sacral lamina. Three independent evaluators placed digital markers at the perceived margin on preinterventional radiographs. The distance from perceived location to the true location on postinterventional radiographs was recorded for each dog and observer. A discordance threshold (distance between perceived and actual margin) of 1.5 mm was subjectively defined as clinically relevant. The three evaluators demonstrated good repeatability, although the accuracy for margin detection was only fair (mean discordance 1.7 mm). Evaluators demonstrated greater accuracy in identifying the landmark in juveniles (1.4 mm) vs. adults (1.8 mm; P < 0.01). Results of this study indicated that observer repeatability is good and accuracy is fair for correctly identifying the radiographic cranial margin of the sacral lamina in dogs. This should be taken into consideration when interpreting elongation of the sacral lamina in radiographs of dogs with suspected DLSS, especially adults.  相似文献

Viral nervous necrosis (VNN) is a worldwide disease affecting several species of cultured marine fish. In Korea, VNN has been identified in several species of cultured marine fish. In this study, the authors present data of the amplified nested polymerase chain reaction product (420 bp) of 21 nodavirus strains from different species of apparently healthy wild marine fish on the southern coast of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on the partial nucleotide sequence (177 bases) of the RNA2 coat protein gene of 21 strains was highly homologous (93-100%) and closely related to that of the known betanodavirus, redspotted grouper nervous necrosis virus. These results indicate that betanodaviruses occur in large populations of wild marine fish in the southern part of the Korean peninsula, suggesting the importance of these subclinically infected fish as an inoculum source of betanodavirus that is horizontally transmitted to susceptible cultured fish species.  相似文献

A total of 288 serum samples were collected from 12 species of animals in various localities of Japan from 1975 to 1977. Neutralizing antibody to bovine rotavirus was found in serum samples from all the species, viz., horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, chickens and human beings. The incidence of neutralizing antibody in titers of 1 : 2 or higher ranged from 31 to 100%, and high incidences exceeding 70% were obtained in horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs, rabbits and human beings. High titers were most common in horses, cattle, sheep and pigs. These serological results suggest that rotaviruses occur commonly in these species of animals.  相似文献

A reliable and stable taxonomic basis is necessary for improvements in the control of secretophagous and blood-sucking flies visiting pastured cattle because the number of these dipterous species is very high; the community differs from area to area; and a better knowledge of the biology of the species can aid the development of more effective control measures. The actual size and density of populations cannot be estimated accurately on the basis of individual flies caught from or counted on cattle or in their environs. The true densities can only be determined by rearing the flies. It would appear that no single control method can be effective against all species because of the major differences in biology between them. In this taxonomy can help. Thirty-one species of Diptera, several of veterinary importance, have been reared from sheep droppings. Sheep droppings have no autochthonous community and all species reared also occur in cattle droppings, although in different proportions.  相似文献

Abstract

Gills of 194 fountain darters Etheostoma fonticola collected from the Comal River in Texas from May 1997 through May 1998 were found to be parasitized with 8–1,524 metacercarial cysts of a heterophyid trematode tentatively identified as Centrocestus formosanus. The intensity of infection varied among three sites on the Comal River. In contrast, of 130 darters from the nearby San Marcos River that were examined, only 4 (3%) were infected, and these had 1–2 cysts per fish. Of 2,279 Melanoides tuberculata snails from the Comal River that were examined, 139 (6.1%) were infected with the trematode. Only 1 snail in 2,241 from the San Marcos River that were examined was infected. The presence of metacercariae in darters was associated with flared opercula, shortened or thickened gill filaments, epithelial hyperplasia, and engorged lamellae. The normal cartilage support of the filaments was distorted and displaced, leading to severe deformities of filament structure. Gill damage was severe and possibly life threatening for the darters with more than 800 cysts per fish (9% of examined fish). We suspect that fountain darter deaths were caused by the parasite in the Comal River during this study.  相似文献

An analysis of census information published for the years 1952, 1958,1960 and 1970 and that obtained during this study in 1977, indicates that both the breeding bull and cow components of this population fluctuated in numbers during the past 25 years. In spite of these fluctuations, the general trend for the cow component was to increase at a rate of 1,4% per year, while the bull component decreased at a rate of 1,9% per year. An analysis based on subdivisions of the study area into distinct regions indicated that the range of fluctuation increased as mean density increased. The population is regarded as a stable fluctuating population and the influence of environmental and social factors on the observed population trends is discussed.  相似文献

Fifteen adult nembwe Serranochromis robustus (Günther, 1864) were tagged with radio transmitters in the Zambezi River, Namibia, from 4–15 November 2000 to record behaviour and outline the implications for fisheries management. The fish were tracked on average every 3.7 days until 18 May 2001. They stayed within relatively small home ranges, with a 95% probability of localization within an average area of 184 563m2. The fish utilized a mean river stretch of 1330 m (range = 24– 3787). Nembwe were recorded in a variety of habitats, and the individual variation in movements and habitat use was substantial. All the fish were recorded in the mainstream of the river, but 62% of the fish were recorded in one or more additional main habitat types. During rising and high water, 67% and 71% of the fish, respectively, were recorded in adjacent temporary flooded areas during some or all tracking surveys, but did not undertake long-distance migrations onto the floodplains. It is concluded that although staying within relatively small home ranges, nembwe appears as a species with a variable and flexible habitat utilization.  相似文献

We examined the gills of wild fish collected from central Texas for Centrocestus formosanus metacercariae to determine whether this temperature-restricted parasite had invaded the thermally dynamic Guadalupe River via an introduced population in its thermally stable tributary, the Comal River. We collected fish from three sites in the Guadalupe River near its confluence with the Comal River (upstream, at, and downstream) and one site in the Comal River. Centrocestus formosanus infected 14 of the 25 species examined (56.0%) and 171 of the individual fish (27.1%). Several of the infected fish represent new host records for the parasite, and two are listed as species of special concern by the state of Texas. Mean metacercarial intensities varied from 8 to 616 among species, and the highest recorded intensity was greater than 800 in two Guadalupe roundnose minnow Dionda nigrotaeniata. Among the 24 species examined from the Guadalupe River, 11 (45.8%) were infected with C. formosanus. Thorough surveys at the study sites yielded no living specimens of the first obligate intermediate snail host (red-rim melania Melanoides tuberculatus), which must be present to perpetuate the parasite. Thus, the infections were probably due to drifting cercariae that had been shed into the water column upstream of the study area in the Comal River. We therefore investigated spatial patterns in cercarial acquisition using caged fish to determine whether drifting cercariae were present in the water column at the study sites. Of 57 uninfected blacktail shiners Cyprinella venusta exposed to Guadalupe River water downstream from and at the confluence, 52 (91.2%) became infected with C. Formosanus metacercariae at a mean rate of 4 metacercariae/d. This finding extends the known geographic range of this invasive exotic parasite and is the first report of the life cycle being advanced in the fish assemblage of a thermally variable temperate stream in the USA.  相似文献
