Cowpox in cats
Orthodox virus infection of domestic cats in the United Kingdom was first reported in 1978. Outbreaks of a disease considered to be due to cowpox (orthopox) infection had been reported in a number of species of zoo animals in Europe between 1971 and 1977 and a serious outbreak occurred among cheetahs in a United Kingdom zoo. In this species the clinical signs were ülcerating and crusted skin lesions, in some cases complicated by respiratory signs and death. An increasing number of cases of pox infection of domestic cats has been reported in Great Britain. Affected animals have shown ulcerating and crusted skin lesions particularly of the head and limbs; systemic illness was uncommon. Immunologically compromised cats, ie, FeLV positive or those receiving corticosteroid of megestrol acetate therapy, were found to be more likely to show extensive or generalised pox lesions. The source of infection is thought to be small wild mammals, ie, voles, acting as a reservoir of virus, which are preyed upon by domestic cats. Feline orthopox virus infection is a zoonosis. Transmission of the disease from affected cats to incontact owners has been reported from Great Britain and the continent of Europe. The differential diagnosis of the condition in cats includes those skin disorders commonly treated with steroidal anti-inflammatory preparations. Definite diagnosis is important as these drugs are contraindicated in viral infections. Confirmation of diagnosis may be by virus isolation and serology. Histological examination of skin biopsy specimens is also helpful. Whether or not the causal agent of this disease should be referred to as cowpox virus or feline orthopox virus continues to be a matter of debate.  相似文献

After the WHO had declared smallpox to be eradicated in 1980, smallpox vaccination ceased to be carried out in humans all over the world. The cutaneous inoculations carried out with live vaccines based on the vaccinia virus from 1798 onwards protected both the global population and, indirectly, the animals living with humans against orthopox infections in general. A large percentage of humans and animals no longer enjoy this protection. Idiopathic orthopox in animals (reservoir possibly rats and mice) are thus experiencing a renaissance, posing a threat to humans and animals. The paper provides an historical retrospective of smallpox epidemics in humankind, their course of development and methods employed to combat this disease, commencing long before the birth of Christ with primitive attempts in China and India and from the end of the 18th century with increasingly enhanced methods, most recently with worldwide smallpox vaccination programmes using live vaccinia vaccines. Smallpox vaccination was always accompanied by a variety of complications, especially postvaccinal encephalitis. The MVA strain was developed to reduce or prevent such adverse effects. MVA has meanwhile proved its worth both as a parenteral vaccine against orthopox infections in humans and animals and as a vector for insertion of foreign genes. The history of smallpox, the fight against this disease and the development of MVA are documented with the help of figures and tables.  相似文献

Five-week-old chickens were inoculated with fowl pox (FP) virus and killed on various days through day 30 postinoculation (PI). The trachea was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and a light microscope (LM). From day 3 PI, small focal lesions of the mucosa were detected. On day 7 PI, upon formation of cytoplasmic inclusion bodies, epithelial cells proliferated profusely, enlarged, and formed clusters like papillomata. The disease proceeded to the gradual disruption of the lesions owing to the collapse of individual degenerating epithelial cells. Total desquamation of the lesions was observed. Ultrastructural examination revealed that the surface degenerating epithelial cells of the lesions ruptured and had virus particles inside. These changes were accompanied by severe inflammatory reaction. Thereafter, epithelial cells regenerated actively and the mucosa recovered by day 27 PI.  相似文献

In 1999, 10 sporadic outbreaks of cattle foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) occurred in Taiwan. By the time, infection was limited to the Chinese yellow cattle (a native species of beef cattle in Mainland China), which did not develop vesicular lesions under field conditions. Five viruses isolates obtained from individual farms were confirmed to be the serotype O FMD virus (O/Taiwan/1999). During January-February 2000, however, this virus has spread to dairy cattle and goat herds, causing severe mortality in goat kids and vesicular lesions in dairy cattle. Partial nucleotide sequence of the capsid coding gene 1D (VP1) was determined for the virus isolates obtained in this study. Phylogenetic analysis of the VP1 sequences indicated that the O/Taiwan/1999 viruses shared 95-97% similarities to the virus strains isolated from the Middle East and India. The species susceptibility of the O/Taiwan/1999 virus was experimentally studied in several species of susceptible animals, showing that the virus did cause generalized lesions in dairy cattle and pigs, however, it would not cause vesicular lesions on the Chinese yellow cattle and the adult goats. These studies suggested that the O/Taiwan/1999 virus was a novel FMD virus of Taiwan and it presented various levels of susceptibility in cattle species.  相似文献

Inoculation of lambs with an ovine isolate of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) by a combined intranasal and intratracheal route resulted in mild respiratory tract illness, with respiratory tract lesions. Lung lesions were characterized by bronchitis and bronchiolitis, hyperplasia of bronchial and bronchiolar epithelium, peribronchiolar and perivascular accumulations of lymphocytes, alveolar septal thickening, and collapse. Respiratory syncytial virus was recovered from the respiratory tract of inoculated lambs, and RSV antigen was demonstrated by immunoperoxidase staining of bronchiolar and alveolar epithelial cell in pneumonic lesions of lambs euthanatized on post-inoculation days 5 and 6. Other primary respiratory tract pathogens were not isolated. Clinical signs of respiratory tract illness or respiratory tract lesions did not develop in the in-contact control lamb. Inoculation of the ovine RSV isolate into calves and deer fawns resulted in infection in both species, and at necropsy, pneumonic lesions were present. A mild to moderate respiratory tract illness developed in the calves, but clinical disease was not seen in the fawns. Lung lesions in fawns were similar to those seen in lambs; lesions in calves were characterized by collapse, scattered areas of parenchymal necrosis, and bronchiolitis. Respiratory syncytial virus was reisolated from the lower respiratory tract of inoculated calves and fawns, and immunoperoxidase-positive epithelial cells were seen in pneumonic lesions. Other primary respiratory pathogens were not detected. Respiratory syncytial virus infection was not demonstrable in control animals that were in contact with inoculated animals.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A parasitological study was conducted on 66 dogs seroreactive for Leishmania captured as a control measure of visceral leishmaniasis in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Biological samples from different anatomical sites were collected during autopsy of the animals and cultured on biphasic medium (NNN/Schneider). The Leishmania isolates were characterized by isoenzyme electrophoresis. Leishmania was isolated from 80.3% of the animals: 12 animals with Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis isolated exclusively from cutaneous lesions, 39 with L. (L.) chagasi isolated from different sites in the same animal, and 2 with simultaneous isolation of L. (V.) braziliensis from cutaneous lesions and L. (L.) chagasi from different sites. Isolation in culture revealed the absence of Leishmania parasites in 13 animals. The results obtained confirm the existence of mixed infections in dogs in Rio de Janeiro and indicate the need to complement the investigation of seroreactive dogs using methods for the parasitological diagnosis and identification of Leishmania species.  相似文献

Glomerulonephritis constitutes an important category of renal diseases in animals and has been recognized with increasing frequency in the last decade. We report here the comparative morphologic aspects of glomerulonephritis as a naturally occurring disease of animals. We briefly review the immunopathogenesis of glomerulonephritis. The morphology of renal lesions occurring in glomerulonephritis in dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, horses and swine has been reviewed with emphasis on the range and specificity of various glomerular lesions and on the comparison of lesions between various species. A distinction was made between glomerulonephritis as a primary disease entity and glomerulonephritis associated with other disease processes. Primary idiopathic glomerulonephritis occurred in all species but was most commonly recognized as a clinically important disease in dogs and cats. Glomerulonephritis also occurred in association with other diseases such as equine infectious anemia, chronic hog cholera, canine pyometra, dirofilariasis, feline leukemia virus infection and canine systemic lupus erythematosus.  相似文献

Sixty-nine specific pathogen-free male Wistar rats approximately eight weeks of age were used to evaluate the efficacy of an attentuated strain of sialodacryoadenitis (SDA) virus in providing protection against infection on subsequent challenge with virulent SDA virus. Fifty-four animals were inoculated intranasally with approximately 10(3.5) median cell culture infectious doses of the 25th passage of SDA virus in L-2 cells. Randomly-selected vaccinated animals were killed in order to evaluate the safety and efficacy of attenuated virus by histopathological examination of the salivary glands, lacrimal glands, and lower respiratory tract, and titration of sera for antibody to SDA virus. At three months and six months postvaccination (pv), animals were selected at random and challenged with virulent SDA virus. Seronegative, age-matched animals were also challenged, and served as controls. In animals examined at six to ten days pv, lesions were absent in submandibular and parotid salivary glands and lacrimal glands, but transient lesions were present in major airways of the lower respiratory tract. In a comparison of the incidence and extent of lesions, and antibody titers in challenged vaccinates and seronegative controls, lesions were minimal or absent in vaccinates compared to challenged naive rats, particularly in animals inoculated at three months pv. In addition, antibody titers in challenged vaccinates were much higher than were postinoculation titers in inoculated controls. In a comparison of lesions in salivary and lacrimal glands in vaccinated and control animals challenged at six months pv, there was a significant reduction in the number of animals without lesions in the vaccinated group (p = less than 0.0001).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A chronic ulcerative and eosinophilic dermatitis occurred in 20 captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) with persistent feline herpes virus 1 (FHV1) infection. Affected animals had erythematous, ulcerated plaques primarily on the face and forelegs in sites of contact with lachrymal and salivary secretions. The dermatitis was characterized by dense infiltrates of eosinophils and plasma cells and pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia. Rare keratinocytes within the lesions had nuclei with marginated chromatin and small eosinophilic inclusions composed of herpes virus nucleocapsids. Virus isolated from lesions was confirmed to be FHV1. Lesions persisted and progressed unless removed by cryoexcision. The occurrence of this unusual reaction to FHV1 in approximately 5% of captive North American cheetahs suggests a species propensity for a Th2-dominant response to herpes virus infection. This atypical immune reaction may indicate a heritable trait or modulation of the immune response by other factors such as chronic stress.  相似文献

It is reported on atypical interstitial pneumonia (AIP) in 16 mostly Holstein-Frisian calves and feeders from 13 different farms in Schleswig-Holstein in association with an infection by the respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV). All animals were submitted with identical clinical histories. Macroscopically the lung lesions were characterized by alveolar and interstitial edema and emphysema. Microscopically there was a diffuse interstitial pneumonia with formation of hyaline membranes and multinucleated giant cells. From the investigation material of the 16 animals BRSV was confirmed by direct immunofluorescence with monoclonal antibodies in 4 animals from 4 different farms.  相似文献

The susceptibility of capybaras exposed to foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus by the intramuscular route and the rodents' close coexistence with cattle in FMD endemic ecosystems suggested that the species might play an important role in the virus' survival in the field. In the present study 2 capybaras and 2 cattle were exposed by contact to a capybara inoculated intramuscularly with FMD virus. Both pairs of exposed animals were then used as a contact source with another 2 cattle and 2 capybaras, respectively. All the animals became infected prior to the appearance of clinical lesions in the respective donor animals and developed generalized FMD clinical lesions. Specific neutralizing antibodies and antibodies to virus-infection-associated antigen (VIA) were also developed.Virus was isolated from feces and from throat swabs of 1 of the capybaras up to 17, but not at 23 days post-contact. Virus was isolated from the remaining animals up to 7–14 days post-contact.The results indicate that these rodents might transmit virus over long distances due to their migratory movements, but probably do not act as natural virus reservoirs.  相似文献

Groups of cattle, sheep and poultry were inoculated with a recombinant vaccinia virus expressing the haemagglutinin of the swine influenza virus A/NJ/11/76. No adverse clinical responses were recorded and none of the animals developed a viraemia when inoculated with the recombinant or wild-type vaccinia virus. Recombinant virus reisolated from lesions in cattle was stable, maintaining its thymidine kinase negative phenotype and ability to express the swine influenza haemagglutinin. Antibodies to the influenza haemagglutinin were detected in cattle, sheep and poultry inoculated with the recombinant virus. While no animals inoculated with wild-type virus developed these antibodies, there was no detectable spread of either recombinant or wild-type virus from the inoculation sites or to in-contact uninoculated animals. The results indicate that recombinant vaccinia viruses can induce immune responses in cattle, sheep and poultry demonstrating their potential as vaccine vectors in a variety of important veterinary species.  相似文献

We report about the infection of an 18-year-old man with an orthopox virus (OPV) which was transmitted by a cat. The infectious route from cat to man could be proved by epidemiological, virological and serological methods. The corresponding techniques are described. The patient had not been vaccinated against smallpox and was intensively immunosuppressed by medication on account of a severe endogeneous eczema combined with an allergic asthma bronchiale. A cyclic poxvirus disease developed with a generalised, partly confluent pox virus exanthema disseminated over the body. The clinical symptoms were similar to a "variola pustulosa haemorrhagica". The young man died of a lung embolism in the course of the intensive medical therapy. The haemorrhagic character of the pox virus pustules with central necrosis (pox navel) could be reproduced in the rabbit skin and on chorioallantois membranes. The pox virus isolated from the patient could be differentiated from variola, vaccinia and monkeypox virus. It is a member of the group of "cowpox-like viruses". The environmental importance of these OPVs is discussed.  相似文献

Twenty-three susceptible pregnant heifers were inoculated with bovine viral diarrhea virus at 150 +/- 1 days of gestation. Seven additional heifers were inoculated between 65 and 115 days of gestation. Acute ocular lesions were seen in fetuses taken 17-21 days after inoculation of the dams at 150 days. By the fourth week, the acute lesions were beginning to resolve, and in newborn animals focal to total retinal atrophy was seen. The acute lesions were characterized by a mild to moderate retinitis that resulted in various degrees of destruction of the different layers, mononuclear cuffing of inner retinal vessels, proliferation of pigment epithelium, and choroiditis. Residually there was an absence of cellular elements in the atrophied areas of the retina, frequently a loss of layering and various numbers of pigment-containing cells. Moderately severe acute inflammation was seen in the retina of the fetus taken at 22 days after inoculation of its dam at 95 days. Ocular lesions did not occur in the other fetuses taken from heifers inoculated at earlier stages of gestation.  相似文献

Skin lesions associated with papillomaviruses have been reported in many animal species and man. Bovine papillomavirus (BVP) affects mainly the epidermis, but also the dermis in several species including bovine, the best-known example being equine sarcoid, which is associated with BVP types 1 and 2. This publication describes and illustrates the macroscopic and histological appearance of BPV-associated papillomatous, fibropapillomatous or sarcoid-like lesions in Cape mountain zebra (Equus zebra zebra) from the Gariep Dam Nature Reserve, 2 giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) from the Kruger National Park, and a sable antelope (Hippotragus niger) from the Kimberley area of South Africa. An African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) cow from Kruger National Park also had papillomatous lesions but molecular characterisation of lesional virus was not done. Immunohistochemical staining using polyclonal rabbit antiserum to chemically disrupted BPV-1, which cross-reacts with the L1 capsid of most known papillomaviruses, was positive in cells of the stratum granulosum of lesions in Giraffe 1, the sable and the buffalo and negative in those of the zebra and Giraffe 2. Fibropapillomatous and sarcoid-like lesions from an adult bovine were used as positive control for the immunohistochemistry and are described and the immunohistochemistry illustrated for comparison. Macroscopically, both adult female giraffe had severely thickened multifocal to coalescing nodular and occasionally ulcerated lesions of the head, neck and trunk with local poorly-circumscribed invasion into the subcutis. Necropsy performed on the 2nd giraffe revealed neither internal metastases nor serious underlying disease. Giraffe 1 had scattered, and Giraffe 2 numerous, large, anaplastic, at times indistinctly multinucleated dermal fibroblasts with bizarre nuclei within the sarcoid-like lesions, which were BPV-1 positive in Giraffe 1 and BPV-1 and -2 positive in Giraffe 2 by RT-PCR. The sable antelope presented with a solitary large lesion just proximal to the right hind hoof, which recurred after excision, and was BPV-1 positive by RT-PCR. Other wart-like growths were present elsewhere on the body. The Cape mountain zebra either succumbed from their massive lesions or were euthanased or removed from the herd because of them. The lesions were BPV-1 and/or -2 positive by RT-PCR. The buffalo lesions were wart-like papillomatous projections in the inguinal and udder region. Stratum granulosum cells that stained immunohistochemically positive in the various species appeared koilocyte-like, as described in human papillomaviral lesions.  相似文献

New developments in the field of viral transmission from animal to man can be divided into four areas of study. First are the new viral zoonoses such as diseases caused by rotaviruses, Lassa virus and the animal orthopox viruses which will be more prevalent after the cessation of mandatory vaccination against smallpox. Secondly are the numerous ubiquitous viruses, such as adeno and herpesviruses, which in healthy animals lead only to clinically inapparent infections. A typical example of the third area is the recombination and hybridisation between animal and human influenza type A viruses. The final area is concerned with the transmission of viral zoonoses to man through food of animal origin.  相似文献

Forty immature (less than 2 years old) rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) with marked increases in aspartate and alanine aminotransferase activities were examined. Serological and histopathological evaluations were done to determine if affected animals were infected with hepatitis A virus. Although no clinical signs of illness were noted in any of the monkeys, an excellent correlation was found between the increased serum aminotransferase values and seropositivity with the acute phase (IgM) HAVAB-M antibody. Histopathological evaluations of livers of selected animals revealed hepatic lesions consistent with those in chimpanzees and marmosets infected with hepatitis A virus: generalized activation of sinusoidal lining cells, focal hepatocellular necrosis with occasional acidophilic bodies, and cuffs of mononuclear cells in the portal areas. Although no animals were seropositive for HAVAB upon receipt from the breeding colony, a total of ten of 18 animals for which serological data were available had seroconverted to HAVAB positivity during the 4-month observation period. These results are consistent with hepatitis A infection in immature rhesus monkeys and indicate the potential significance of serological testing in animals in which hepatic function is being evaluated.  相似文献

CASE HISTORY: Three cats were presented with single proliferative lesions affecting one foot, which failed to heal after medical treatment, and recurred despite surgical resection. PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: Histologically, the lesions were proliferative and papillary. There was marked acanthosis, rete peg formation, and compact orthokeratosis, with large numbers of bacteria in the orthokeratotic scale. Some biopsies had multifocal keratinocyte swelling of the stratum granulosum, and amphophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions were present in some of the swollen cells. The dermis consisted of a light fibrous stroma with marked capillary proliferation. Parapoxviruses were detected in the lesions of all cats by electron microscopic examination. PCR analysis detected orf virus (contagious ecthyma virus) in two cats, and orf virus was cultured from one cat. DIAGNOSIS: Parapoxvirus infection in cats. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Parapoxvirus infection should be considered as a differential diagnosis when dealing with proliferative, non-healing lesions on the feet of cats, especially cats in rural areas. The recovery of orf virus from a cat with typical poxvirus lesions extends the range of species affected by this virus.  相似文献

Encephalomycarditis virus recovered from a pig mortality in New South Wales was used to produce experimental infections. Of 34 pigs exposed, 17 died and a further 7 were found to have severe heart lesions when killed. Deaths occurred from 2 to 11 days after exposure with a mode of approximately 3 days. Ten of 11 pigs exposed by intramuscular injection died and the remaining pig was killed after 28 days and found to have severe resolving heart lesions. Of 15 pigs exposed per os to various doses of virus, 6 died, 4 were killed and found to have severe heart lesions and 5 were apparently not infected. Intranasal exposure of 8 pigs resulted in 1 death and 4 pigs with mild to severe heart lesions. Different doses of virus and routes of exposure did not substantially influence the character of the lesions. Lesions were similar to those found previously in field cases, and virus was recovered from all of 19 animals examined with severe acute lesions of 10 days standing or less.  相似文献
