A 4-year-old Quarter Horse gelding with a history of acute trauma was presented to our faculty. This report describes the inciting injury, documented in a video, and the ultrasonographic diagnosis of a traumatic extrusion of the right lateral meniscus with an accompanying extra-articular hematoma and distal collateral ligament lesion in a competing Quarter Horse. The ultrasonographic diagnosis of a lateral meniscal injury directly correlated with postmortem findings and this type of lateral meniscal injury has not been previously described in detail.  相似文献

Desmotomy of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon is advocated to allow for lengthening of the deep digital flexor musculotendinous unit and axial realignment of the bones of the digit. This procedure has several indications. It can be performed using either the open or the minimally invasive surgical approach. This article describes both surgical approaches. Corrective shoeing before surgery contributes to success in both surgical approaches. The cosmetic results obtained after the minimally invasive procedure are much better as compared with those after the open surgical procedure. The minimally invasive approach compares favorably with results reported after using an open surgical approach and offers the advantages of minimally invasive surgery including reduced incision length, reduced morbidity, and improved cosmetic outcome. The minimally invasive approach may be also performed on the standing sedated horse.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to assess the correlation between hoof surface temperature and ultrasonographic measurements of digital blood vessels in horses and to evaluate the measurements' potential as predictors for clinical lameness. Twelve 3-year-old American Quarter Horses, 6 geldings and 6 mares, with average initial body weight of 459 ± 31 kg were used. On days 0, 30, 60, and 90 of the study, horses were weighed and subjected to clinical lameness examinations. Doppler ultrasonography was used to measure diameter of the medial palmar artery in the distal left forelimb and velocity of blood flow through that artery, starting at 60 minutes after morning feeding and repeated at 30-minute intervals. Temperature measurements on the hoof were collected at 15-minute intervals beginning 75 minutes after feeding, using a digital thermographic camera. A series of bivariate linear mixed models were fitted to estimate the correlation between Doppler and temperature measurements. The within-horse and between-horse correlations between hoof surface temperature and velocity of blood flow in the distal limb through the medial palmar artery was estimated at 0.40 (P > .50) and 0.99 (P < .001), respectively. These results indicate that at the horse level, the correlation between hoof temperature and velocity of blood flow in the distal limb was very high but that the within-horse correlation was not significantly different from 0. Velocity of blood flow at 60 minutes after feeding improved model fit to the lameness data, so it was included as a model predictor for lameness.  相似文献

To investigate morphological and genomic differences between cutting and racing lines of Quarter Horses, 120 racing and 68 cutting animals of both sexes, registered at the Brazilian Association of Quarter Horse Breeders, were used. Blood samples were collected, and the following physical traits were measured: weight; height at withers; body length; length of the shank, pastern, rump, head, and neck; and chest, shank, and hoof circumference. For analysis of genomic differences, 54,602 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped using the Equine SNP50 BeadChip, and the quality of individual and SNP genotype data were evaluated. The fixation index, FST, was used to identify genome regions that were altered in the lines by selection. The results showed significant differences between the lines in all physical traits. Quality control led to the exclusion of four cutting animals with a call rate of <0.95. After filtering, 12,544, 13,815, and 13,370 SNPs were excluded for the whole population (n = 184), the 120 racing animals, and the 64 cutting animals, respectively. The number of informative polymorphisms detected in each line and in the whole population indicated that the Equine SNP50 BeadChip can be used in genetic studies of Quarter Horses. The fixation index, FST, identified 2,558 genome regions that may have been modified by divergent selection.  相似文献

Reasons for performing study: There have been many studies that document radiographic findings in young Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses. No such studies have been performed in Quarter Horses. Objective: To describe the prevalence of radiographic changes in the stifles, tarsi, carpi and fetlocks of young Quarter Horses intended for cutting. Methods: Radiographs of yearling and 2‐year‐old Quarter Horses were obtained from a radiograph repository and a private farm. The carpi, tarsi, fetlocks and stifles were evaluated and radiographic changes categorised by type and location. The frequency of changes was calculated and comparisons were made between the 2 age groups. Results: Of 458 included horses, 408 (89.1%) had radiographic changes, most of which were in the tarsi (304, 69.4%) followed by the stifles (202, 44.5%), hind fetlocks (155 of 355, 43.7%), fore fetlocks (131 of 361, 36.3%) and carpi (27 of 342, 7.9%). Of the horses with stifle changes, 188 (93.1%) were in the medial femoral condyle (MFC). There was a significant difference between the age groups for changes on the distal intermediate ridge of the tibia (DIRT), hindlimb middle phalanx (P2) osteophytes and proximal tibial osteophytes. Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of radiographic changes in presale survey radiographs, especially in the stifles and tarsi, of young Quarter Horses intended for cutting. Potential relevance: Veterinarians examining presale radiographs at cutting horse sales should expect a high prevalence of radiographic changes in this population of horses. Work to determine the clinical relevance of these radiographic changes is currently ongoing.  相似文献

This case report describes the successful management of two horses with medial carpal collateral ligament injury. This is a rare cause of forelimb lameness and existing reports indicate a poor prognosis for return to athletic function with conservative management. Both horses were treated with a combination of box rest with controlled exercise and high-intensity laser therapy (HILT). Both horses returned to previous athletic function, one at Grand Prix level dressage and one at Novice level eventing. With appropriate management, the prognosis for carpal collateral ligament injury may be good. From this report, it is unclear whether a rehabilitation program including HILT offers improved prognosis compared with a rehabilitation program alone.  相似文献

In this retrospective study, clinical records of nine horses with a diagnosis of Bothrops envenomation were investigated. The accidents were classified as severe (5/9), moderate (2/9), or mild (2/9) according to the adapted bothropic snakebite severity score (BSSS). All snakebites were on the head region. The main clinical signs were local edema, blood coagulation disorders, and respiratory distress. The whole-blood clotting time (WBCT) was prolonged in all horses, and five horses presented with uncoagulable blood. All horses received specific snake antivenom according to the BSSS (six vials for severe, four vials for moderate, and two vials for mild accidents), and emergency tracheotomy was required in six horses because of respiratory distress. One horse died after eight days of hospitalization, whereas the others were discharged after nine days of hospitalization. The BSSS plus the WBCT were useful in determining the prognosis and the amount and frequency of antivenom therapy. Snakebite accidents are emergency cases; therefore, rapid and efficient therapeutic intervention will reflect positively on the prognosis.  相似文献

Hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia (HERDA) results from a genetic mutation which affects the skin and other tissues of Quarter Horses and horses with Quarter Horse lineage. The disease HERDA has an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance and has become a significant concern in the Quarter Horse industry due to the high frequency of heterozygote carriers. Affected homozygous horses appear normal at birth; however, within the first 2 years of life they usually acquire loose, hyperextensible skin and wounds which result in disfiguring scars either spontaneously or from minor trauma. Some severely affected horses also develop haematomas and seromas. Consequently, most affected horses are subjected to euthanasia at an early age. No treatment options other than palliative therapy currently exist. As part of a five panel test ( http://www.aqha.com/News/News-Articles/2013/April/04292013-Genetic-Testing.aspx ) the American Quarter Horse Association presently requires DNA testing for HERDA on all breeding stallions. There are currently no restrictions on registration of horses heterozygous or homozygous for the HERDA mutation. Due to the autosomal recessive nature of the disease, Quarter Horse mares and horses of all breeds from HERDA‐associated bloodlines should also be tested.  相似文献

Estimation of Saliva Production in Crib-Biting and Normal Horses   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Increasing saliva flow to buffer the stomach has been hypothesized as a basis for crib-biting in horses. Saliva amounts in seven cribbing and seven noncribbing (control) horses were compared either pre- and post-cribbing or at pre- and post-5-minute intervals for controls. A pre-weighed cellulose sponge was used to collect saliva at the exit of the submandibular gland for 30 seconds, then reweighed. Data were analyzed as repeated measures. Mean saliva weight overall was similar between cribbing and control horses (1.2 and 1.5 g, respectively, SE = 0.2). However, mean saliva weight for pre- and post-samples (1.5 and 1.2 g, respectively, SE = 0.06) for all horses was significantly lower (P < .05) in the post-sample, indicating a drying effect of the sponge. Because of a strong tendency (P < .06) for a treatment-by-sampling time interaction, data were analyzed by sampling time and cribbing status. Mean saliva weights in the pre-sample were 0.43 g higher (P < .03) in control than cribbing horses. Control horses showed a 0.38 g decrease (P < .01) in saliva weight between pre- and post-samples, which was not evident in cribbing horses. To determine whether cribbing offset the saliva decrease seen in control horses, nine cribbing horses were sampled as before but prevented from cribbing between samples. A similar reduction (0.39 g, P < .01) in saliva weights between samples with cribbing allowed versus cribbing prevented was seen in these horses as was seen in control horses in the initial study. Because cribbing does produce saliva, gastrointestinal irritation could be a motivating cause for cribbing.  相似文献

为探讨促孕散治疗卵巢静止的作用机理,本研究主要通过直肠检查结合B超对卵巢静止奶牛做出诊断后,对其口服促孕散进行治疗,应用B超对卵巢卵泡直径、卵巢长度、卵巢宽度、子宫角纵径和子宫颈纵径进行测量,并与用药前进行对比。Ⅻ头卵巢静止奶牛口服促孕散后,治疗有效率达86.7%。停药后第1天卵巢出现中等卵泡和大卵泡,停药后第16天大卵泡数量最多,部分奶牛出现发情并排卵,与用药前卵巢比较发现,左右两侧卵巢长度在停药后第1、4、10、19天显著增大(P〈0.05);左卵巢宽度在停药后第19天显著增大(P〈0.05);右卵巢宽度在停药后第1、10、19天显著增大(P〈0.(15)7.子宫颈纵径在停药后第13、16天极显著增大(P〈o.01),第19天显著增大(P〈0.05),子宫角纵径与用药前比较差异不显著(P〉0.05)。结果表明,B超是诊断奶牛卵巢静止的有效手段,中药促孕散对卵巢静止奶牛卵巢和子宫形态学变化具有一定的作用,对治疗奶牛卵巢静止有明显的效果。  相似文献

The cardiac effects of high dosages of the ß2-adrenergic agent clenbuterol have been the focus of several histological, biochemical and echocardiographic studies in the past. Possible effects of a therapeutic dosage on myocardial contractility and velocities have not been evaluated using tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) and two-dimensional speckle tracking (2DST) in equine medicine. Twenty-five healthy horses were treated over 14 days with clenbuterol in a normal dosage (0.8 μg/kg every 12 hours). Before and after the treatment, an echocardiographic examination was performed using B-mode, M-mode, color flow Doppler, and tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). In all horses, the radial and circumferential myocardial functions were recorded in the right parasternal short-axis view (SAX). Pulsed-wave (PW) and color TDI were used for evaluation of peak and mean myocardial velocities; myocardial deformation was documented in 2DST. An improvement of diastolic function after clenbuterol treatment was demonstrated by a significant increase of the early diastolic radial wall motion velocity (Em) in all myocardial sections except the right ventricular free wall (RVFW) in TDI, as well as an increase of the E/A quotient in the left ventricular free wall (LVFW) and the interventricular septum (IVS). Shortened time intervals, in particular in the LVFW and a tendency of increase of all deformation parameters showed improved relaxation characteristics of the cardiac muscle after treatment. The results can be interpreted as beginning physiologic cardiac hypertrophy due to clenbuterol treatment. No signs of increased rigidity or reduced compliance of the heart muscle could be found at the applied dosage. This study demonstrates the sensitivity of TDI and 2DST in equine cardiology to detect myocardial remodeling before the appearance of obvious findings in conventional echocardiographic techniques. This technique can be used to detect pharmacologic effects on myocardial function.  相似文献

采用16个血液遗传住点对北京华骏育马场的275组及中国马术协会所提供的2组马匹进行了亲仔关系的鉴定,并对其中典型的8组马匹进行了分析。得出结果如下:6匹幼驹与其指定父母双方均不符而被排除亲仔关系,经验证确认为属于幼驹被串换;在所检的遗传住点中,以D血型、运铁蛋白(Tf)、蛋白酶抑制剂(Pi)和6-磷酸葡萄糖脱氢酶(6-PGD)检测亲仔关系错误的效果最好;在根据自身外貌无法断定为非纯血马的情况下,采用从非纯血马亲本来鉴定是行之有效的。  相似文献

This article describes the lower limb and hoof conformation of a population of semi-feral Mongolian horses living on an open tundra/steppe environment. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 120 Mongolian horses used in the 2011 Mongolian Derby. Digital images of the hooves were obtained, and the lower limb conformation was assessed by four veterinarians involved in the screening of the horses offered for the derby. The horses were predominantly geldings (96%, 100/104), approximately 8.6 ± 2.5 years old, and 137 ± 8 cm at the withers. None of the horses were subjected to routine hoof trimming. Based on a 7-point linear score, lower limb conformation was normal, with a trend (>1 linear score deviation) slightly toward carpal valgus, mildly offset cannon (third metacarpal), and valgus at the matacarpophalangeal joint. Hoof measurements were within the norm for horses of this size. Fetlock valgus was associated with a smaller hoof width:length ratio (P = .016). None of the other hoof measurements were significantly associated with abnormal conformation scores. Overall, few conformation abnormalities were observed, and hoof shape and size was within the normal expected range for horses of this size. The hoof conformation in this population of Mongolian horses represented the natural interaction of the hoof with the environment.  相似文献

Eltenac (ELT) [4-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)amino-3-thiophene] is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was developed for veterinary use in horses and cattle. The pharmacokinetics of ELT was evaluated in horses at 0.5 mg/kg body weight (BW) after single IV injection after 5 days of repeated IV administration and after a single IV injection in horses previously subjected to 250 mg/kg BW of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) as an alkalization treatment. The aim was to determine whether blood and subsequent urinary alkalization could modify the pharmacokinetics of ELT. Drug quantification was performed with serum and urine using high performance liquid chromatography with UV-visible detection. The results were also integrated with cyclo-oxygenase-inhibition literature data to review the dosage scheme of ELT in horses. After a single intravenous administration, ELT was characterized by rapid distribution (mean t½λ1 = 0.18 ± 0.07 hour) and a short elimination half-life (mean t½λ2 = 2.9 ± 0.68 hour). The volume of distribution was small (Vdss = 253.51 ± 47.55 mL/kg), which is likely because of the high percentage of drug protein binding (approximately 97%). The AUC0-∞ and ClB were 6.92 ± 0.84 h*μg/mL and 73.2 ± 10 mL/h/kg, respectively. Repeated administration did not cause either accumulation or modification of the pharmacokinetic profile. The in vitro effective concentrations were maintained for a 6-hour period. The alkalization procedure appeared to accelerate drug elimination, as ELT was quantifiable only for 6 hours; however, the drug clearance was not significantly modified. Thus, the administration of alkaline compounds to accelerate the elimination of ELT is not completely confirmed.  相似文献

The use of suitable therapeutic protocols is particularly important when extra-label drugs are used or when physiological parameters are modified, as in the case of the administration of alkaline substances to racehorses. The pharmacokinetics of naproxen (NAP), after both intravenous (iv) and oral administration of 10 mg/kg body weight (BW), was investigated in horses under normal metabolic conditions and in horses whose conditions were modified by the iv administration of 250 mg/kg BW of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). The hypothesis that blood and consequent urinary alkalization could modify NAP pharmacokinetics was evaluated. Drug quantification was performed on serum and urine using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet-visible detection. Results were also integrated with cycloxygenase (COX)-inhibition published data to suggest an appropriate schedule for NAP dosage in horses. After iv administration, NAP was rapidly distributed (t1/2α: 0.71 ± 0.43 iv NaHCO3 and 0.55 ± 0.62 hours No NaHCO3), whereas its elimination was quite slow (t1/2β: 6.74 ± 0.41 hours), particularly in iv NaHCO3 animals (t1/2β: 8.95 ± 1.37 hours). After oral treatments, NAP was more rapidly absorbed and elimination was slower in iv NaHCO3 animals (t1/2λz: 17.50 ± 6.66 vs. 7.17 ± 0.91 hours). The oral bioavailability of NAP was approximately 87% and 77% in No NaHCO3 and iv NaHCO3, respectively. Urinary excretion of the drug as a parent compound was low. The alkalization procedure did not anticipate the elimination of the acidic drug as expected, but it also influenced the absorption of the drug that was administered orally. The dosage scheme of 10 mg/kg BW iv or orally seems to be appropriate to produce an anti-inflammatory effect for 12 to 24 hours.  相似文献
