We assessed the needs of ruminant-livestock owners in three districts in Ghana for veterinary services, the acceptability of particular services or activities and the willingness of people to use services through public or private delivery systems. Purposive sampling was used in choosing 516, 100 and 100 ruminant-livestock owners in East Mamprusi, Savelugu-Nanton and Tamale districts, respectively, for the administration of a questionnaire. The response proportions were 87-99%. Focus-group discussions (FGDs) were done in Savelugu-Nanton and Tamale districts. Animal diseases, housing, and lack of knowledge on management practices were identified as the three most important problems in the districts. Generally, accessibility to veterinary services and drugs was not easy. Large proportions of respondents identified advice on health, bathing or spraying against ectoparasites, castration, deworming, treatment involving injectables, sale of medicines or drugs, treatment for skin diseases, vaccinations, and treatment of wounds as activities that they needed. Many used veterinary staff to meet their needs and were willing to use the services of private veterinary providers if private clinics were established in their localities.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors influencing satisfaction with procedures for small animal euthanasia and to compare the relative importance of those factors among clients, staff, and students at a veterinary teaching hospital. DESIGN: Survey. SAMPLE POPULATION: 18 nonclinical hospital staff members, 13 clinical staff members, 10 veterinary technicians, 19 veterinary students, and 91 clients. PROCEDURE: Participants were asked to complete a survey that was designed to assess satisfaction with various aspects of the euthanasia procedure. RESULTS: Overall response rate was 48% (151/313). Respondents most strongly agreed with the statements that clients should have the option to be present, that having a private place was important, and that employees should be trained to attend to the emotional needs of the client. When asked to place factors in order of importance, those that were ranked the highest included compassionate and caring attitudes of the hospital employees, the option for the client to be present during the euthanasia, and the client being informed and well prepared. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Overall, all groups (nonclinical staff, clinical staff, veterinary technicians, veterinary students, and clients) identified the same factors as being important in the euthanasia of a pet. Results may help facilitate healthy euthanasia experiences.  相似文献

We evaluated Arizona Cooperative Extension’s Rangeland Monitoring Program with the use of focus groups and a self-administered mail survey of grazing permittees and natural resource agency employees. Our primary objectives were to 1) determine whether Extension is reaching its target audience, 2) describe the monitoring practices and attitudes of permittees and agency staff, 3) determine whether there is a relationship between permittees’ exposure to Cooperative Extension and their monitoring and management practices, and 4) identify the monitoring information needs and preferences of permittees and natural resource agency staff. We found that Arizona’s rangeland monitoring Extension program has been effective in reaching a large part of its target audience, and a significant proportion of Arizona permittees monitor on public, private, and state-owned rangelands. However, overall monitoring adoption rates remain low. Extension contact is associated with use of monitoring and other beneficial management practices, and permittees and agency employees report that monitoring increased their knowledge and led to changes in management. Monitoring by permittees improves agency–permittee relationships in many cases. Most permittees and agency employees believe that their respective peers are the most reliable source of monitoring information and prefer to receive information from Extension through face-to-face contact at workshops or personalized on-site assistance. The evaluation revealed important social dimensions of rangeland monitoring. Extension agents play a key role in facilitating the social process of monitoring, as well as providing technical training in monitoring skills. Further study is needed to investigate whether permittee monitoring actually leads to better management, improved economic returns, or increased tenure security.  相似文献

The trend in wildlife management over the last two decades has been to develop locally based approaches for responsiveness to local conditions, but some state wildlife agencies are finding the amount of staff time required to service this approach prohibitive. Although local engagement strategies have been lauded as assuring that public trust obligations of state government to citizens are met, we can expect that states with a local focus as their operational level of stakeholder engagement may opt to change their approach to reflect their resource limitations. We argue for comprehensive regional level effort to understand stakeholders augmented with local engagement processes where needed to deal with special circumstances in smaller areas within a region. Such an approach can be anticipated to have implications for stakeholder engagement and human dimensions research needs, which we discuss in the context of public trust resource administration and good governance of wildlife resources.  相似文献

Veterinarians specializing in pig health care responded to a questionnaire regarding their experiences with vaccinations. The goal of the questionnaire was to gain insight into a) the reasons for vaccination and b) the factors involved in the efficacy of vaccination. The results indicated that vaccinations were typically initiated because of health problems at the farm. Veterinarians worked together with farmers and other concerned parties to initiate vaccinations. Respondents predicted that the number of vaccinations would decrease substantially with optimal farm management, but would increase if farmers were allowed (under strict conditions) to vaccinate their own pigs. The results further indicated that the nature of financial compensation predicted the rate of vaccination. Veterinarians paid according to a fixed 'fee for service' system vaccinated less frequently than did veterinarians who were paid according to an ongoing farm management contract. In conclusion, veterinarians appear to be restricted in their capacity to disseminate their experience and knowledge due to the competing needs of the farming network (animals, farmers, retailers).  相似文献

The medical practice of declawing has received much political debate over the past few years. Yet, empirical and theoretical research on how this practice is maintained and the ethical positions of those who actually participate in this work is lacking. Drawing from 9 months of ethnographic fieldwork in a feline-specific veterinary hospital and open-ended interviews with veterinarians and staff, this study examines veterinary staff members' attitudes toward, and strategies for, dealing with the medical practice of declawing. Specifically, findings show that a number of staff felt uncomfortable with their participation in onychectomy (declawing) and relied heavily on organizational support structures to cope both with these feelings and the moral ambiguity about the practice. Relying on these structures, the veterinarians and their staff are able simultaneously to define felines as subjects worthy of respect for their quality of life, protect their own self-identity as people who work toward the best interest of animals, and paradoxically support action toward felines that they find morally objectionable.  相似文献

Given the importance of psychological services for veterinary students, a survey was administered to all US veterinary schools and many international ones, asking them to report on the amount and type of psychological support services they offer to students, faculty, and staff. This article reports on the results of this survey and presents suggestions for increasing the accessibility of counseling services. One objective of the current study was to initiate an avenue for ongoing communication between individuals involved in student counseling within each school. 草原是我国重要的自然资源,对维护生态系统稳定具有十分重要的意义。草原确权承包工作是草原生态保护和建设的制度保障,是落实中央有关要求的具体举措。从已有对草原确权的报道来看,由于我国草原牧区的特殊情况,草原确权工作在地区间推进速度不一,整体推进不平衡,部分地区确权工作推进相对缓慢。在对草原确权承包工作的背景、现状进行分析的基础上,梳理了推进我国草原确权承包需要的基础工作,包括基础信息收集、承包合同完善、颁发草原权属证书、开展培训、加强信息管理和健全草场纠纷解决机制等,提出了信息管理平台的构建思路,包括主要构成模块、基本功能、工作流程、采用的主要技术等。在此基础上,提出了下一步推进草原“三权分置”的思考和建议,对于推动我国草原确权承包和信息化管理具有重要意义。  相似文献
