Observational studies are prone to two types of errors: random and systematic. Random error arises as a result of variation between samples that might be drawn in a study and can be reduced by increasing the sample size. Systematic error arises from problems with the study design or the methods used to obtain the study data and is not influenced by sample size. Over the last 20 years, veterinary epidemiologists have made great progress in dealing more effectively with random error (particularly through the use of multilevel models) but paid relatively little attention to systematic error. Systematic errors can arise from unmeasured confounders, selection bias and information bias. Unmeasured confounders include both factors which are known to be confounders but which were not measured in a study and factors which are not known to be confounders. Confounders can bias results toward or away from the null. The impact of selection bias can also be difficult to predict and can be negligible or large. Although the direction of information bias is generally toward the null, this cannot be guaranteed and its impact might be very large. Methods of dealing with systematic errors include: qualitative assessment, quantitative bias analysis and incorporation of bias parameters into the statistical analyses.  相似文献

Insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) is an allergic dermatitis of the horse caused by bites of insects of the genus Culicoides and is currently the best characterized allergic disease of horses. This article reviews knowledge of the immunopathogenesis of IBH, with a particular focus on the causative allergens. Whereas so far hardly any research has been done on the role of antigen presenting cells in the pathogenesis of IBH, recent studies suggest that IBH is characterized by an imbalance between a T helper 2 (Th2) and regulatory T cell (T(reg)) immune response, as shown both locally in the skin and with stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Various studies have shown IBH to be associated with IgE-mediated reactions against salivary antigens from Culicoides spp. However, until recently, the causative allergens had not been characterized at the molecular level. A major advance has now been made, as 11 Culicoides salivary gland proteins have been identified as relevant allergens for IBH. Currently, there is no satisfactory treatment of IBH. Characterization of the main allergens for IBH and understanding what mechanisms induce a healthy or allergic immune response towards these allergens may help to develop new treatment strategies, such as immunotherapy.  相似文献

Several commercial devices are available to the equine practitioner for preparation of platelet‐rich plasma (PRP). PRP is a ‘catch all’ term for a multitude of platelet concentrates (PC) with different biological components and properties. Case reports often fail to cite the exact type of PC used. A critical analysis of the available evidence on the clinical significance of differences between platelet concentrates is presented in an attempt to determine if one commercially available product is superior to the others.  相似文献

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder in both dogs and humans. It is refractory to therapy in approximately one-third of canine patients, and even with the advent of new antiepileptic drugs for humans, appropriate treatment options in dogs remain limited. The pathogenesis and pathophysiology of epilepsy is being studied extensively in both human patients and rodent models of experimental epilepsy at the cellular and molecular level, but very little is known about the aetiologies of epilepsies in dogs. In this review, canine epilepsy will be discussed with reference to the human epilepsies and experimental epilepsy research. There is much work to be done in order to classify canine seizure types and breed-specific epileptic syndromes, particularly with reference to electroencephalographic abnormalities and possible genetic abnormalities. The review considers the appropriate use of antiepileptic drugs: phenobarbitone and potassium bromide are effective in most canine patients, although dosing regimes need to be carefully tailored to the individual, with serum concentration measurement. However, a significant proportion of patients remains refractory to these drugs. Work is currently underway to test the efficacy of newer antiepileptic drugs in the treatment of canine epilepsy, and preliminary data suggest that human drugs such as levetiracetam and gabapentin are of benefit in dogs with refractory epilepsy.  相似文献

Canine parvovirus (CPV) has been reported throughout the world since the late 1970s. Published information was reviewed to draw insights into the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and outcomes of CPV disease in Australia and the role of scientific research on CPV occurrence, with key research discoveries and knowledge gaps identified. Australian researchers contributed substantially to early findings, including the first reported cases of parvoviral myocarditis, investigations into disease aetiopathogenesis, host and environmental risk factors and links between CPV and feline panleukopenia. Two of the world's first CPV serological surveys were conducted in Australia and a 1980 national veterinary survey of Australian and New Zealand dogs revealed 6824 suspected CPV cases and 1058 deaths. In 2010, an Australian national disease surveillance system was launched; 4940 CPV cases were reported between 2009 and 2014, although underreporting was likely. A 2017 study estimated national incidence to be 4.12 cases per 1000 dogs, and an annual case load of 20,110 based on 4219 CPV case reports in a survey of all Australian veterinary clinics, with a 23.5% response rate. CPV disease risk factors identified included socioeconomic disadvantage, geographical location (rural/remote), season (summer) and rainfall (recent rain and longer dry periods both increasing risk). Age <16 weeks was identified as a risk factor for vaccination failure. Important knowledge gaps exist regarding national canine and feline demographic and CPV case data, vaccination coverage and population immunity, CPV transmission between owned dogs and other carnivore populations in Australia and the most effective methods to control epizootics.  相似文献

The demand for duck meat, duck eggs, and associated products is increasing each year. Classic and modern selection programs have been applied to enhance the economic traits of ducks to satisfy the requirements of consumers and enhance the incomes of producers. The nutritional requirements of unselected ducks may not be adequate, however, to fulfill the potential productivity performance of modern birds, including both meat-type and egg-type ducks. In particular, an imbalanced diet is associated with low productive performance and signs of nutritional deficiency(if insufficient nutrients are supplied), as well as with high feed costs and manure problems that reflect flock health and welfare(if excessive nutrients are supplied). Thus, the main aim of this review is to summarize the results of previous studies that estimated the nutrient requirements of meat-type and egg-type ducks in order to evaluate current knowledge and to identify further issues that need to be addressed. In addition, the results obtained in previous studies are compared in order to understand how to lower commercial feed costs, fulfill the genetic potential of selected ducks, protect the environment from pollution, and satisfy the welfare and health needs of ducks.  相似文献

Cat bite infections are one of the most common infectious diseases presenting to veterinary practices and to emergency rooms at human hospitals. This review describes the disease in humans and cats, the origin of organisms involved in cat bite abscesses and the importance of selected organisms such as members of the genus Porphyromonas in the disease. It also discusses future directions, the importance of identifying significant organisms and why an understanding of antimicrobial susceptibility patterns is of consequence to the outcome of the disease in humans and cats.  相似文献

Efficacy of vaccines against bacterial diseases in swine: what can we expect?   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
This paper discusses what can be expected with regard to efficacy of antibacterial vaccines used in swine, based on the present knowledge of pathogen–host interactions. First, vaccination against bacteria that mainly cause disease by production of exotoxins is considered. Vaccines containing the inactivated toxin or a non-toxic but antigenic recombinant protein derived from the exotoxin can be expected to provide protection against disease. The degree of protection induced by such vaccines varies, however, depending amongst other things on the pathogenesis of the disease. Vaccination against clostridial infections, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae infections, progressive atrophic rhinitis and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, is considered. The second part of the article deals with vaccination against extracellular bacteria. Protection against these bacteria is generally mediated by antibodies against their surface antigens and certain secreted antigens, but cellular immunity may also play a role. Efficacy of vaccines against swine erysipelas, Streptococcus suis infections, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infections and swine dysentery is discussed. Finally, vaccination against facultatively intracellular bacteria is considered. For protection against these bacteria cell-mediated immunity plays an important role, but antibodies may also be involved. It is generally accepted that live-attenuated vaccines are more suitable for induction of cell-mediated immunity than inactivated vaccines, although this also depends on the adjuvant used in the vaccine. As an example, vaccination against Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium is discussed.  相似文献
