Contact with oestrual ewes induces an increase in LH and testosterone concentrations in rams. LH provokes an increase in testicular capillary permeability in rodents and an increase in testicular fluid in rams. Therefore, the objectives of the present experiment were to determine whether contact with oestrual ewes, including courtship and mating, induces an increase in testicular fluid content and scrotal temperature in rams. During the breeding season, after 2 weeks isolated from females, a total of 18 tests were performed using one ram with one ewe. The rams were allowed to court and mate the ewes during 20 min. Testosterone blood concentrations were measured by RIA from blood samples taken before and immediately after each test. Rectal, scrotal surface and anal skin temperatures were measured before the test, at the end, and 30 min later. At the same moments, ultrasonographic examinations of the testes were performed. Testosterone concentrations increased after the tests (p = 0.016), and ultrasound images were darker at the end of the tests and 30 min later (p < 0.0001). Rectal, anal skin and scrotal temperatures increased at the end of the test, but decreased 30 min later to initials values. The stimulus of oestrual ewes determined an increase in testosterone secretion, which was associated with an increase in testicular fluid content. Fluid content remained increased at least for 30 min after the end of the ram-ewe contact. Contact with oestrual ewes triggered an increase in testicular fluid that remained higher after the end of the test.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the suitability of thermographic monitoring of scrotal surface temperature (SST) as a method to monitor testicular function. Yearling bulls (n = 23) with low semen production were selected. Scrotal surface temperature and serum testosterone (T) concentrations were evaluated before and after administration of 10.5 μg buserelin acetate IV. Thermographic images of scrotum were recorded at 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 min post‐GnRH, while blood sampling was only performed at 60 min post‐GnRH. Bulls were divided in two groups: LowTemp bulls (n = 10) had a decreased SST at 60 min; HighTemp bulls (n = 13) had an increased SST. After 60 min, LowTemp bulls had higher T concentrations compared to HighTemp bulls: 14.32 ng/ml ± 0.53 vs 10.30 ± 1.37 ng/ml (mean ± SEM; p < 0.05), respectively. Reproductive performances in both groups improved after GnRH administration, resulting in an increased number of inseminating doses from each collection, which was higher in LowTemp bulls. Pearson correlation test showed a negative relationship between T and SST (r = ?0.554). In conclusion, a decreased scrotal surface temperature 60 min after GnRH treatment was associated with improved semen production.  相似文献

The study was conducted for a period of 45 days to assess the influence of body condition scoring (BCS) on reproductive efficiency of Malpura rams in terms of sexual behaviour, scrotal measurements, semen attributes and endocrine responses. The rams were randomly divided into three groups as group I (BCS = 2.5; n = 7), group II (BCS = 3.0; n = 7) and group III (BCS = 4.0; n = 7). Apart from grazing for 8 h a day, the rams were provided with concentrate mixture at the rate of 100, 300 and 500 g to groups I, II and III respectively to attain their respective BCS. Under these differential feeding regimes, sexual behaviour scrotal measurements, semen characteristics and endocrine parameters were studied at 15‐days interval. Sexual behaviour, scrotal volume, scrotal circumference, testicular width, testicular length and scrotal skin thickness differed significantly (p < 0.05) between lower BCS group (group I) and higher BCS groups (groups II and III). The semen volume, mass motility and progressive sperm motility were recorded significantly (p < 0.05) higher in group II and lowest in group I. However, the sperm concentration did not differ significantly between the groups. The mean plasma testosterone concentration differed significantly (p < 0.05) between lower BCS group (group I) and higher BCS groups (groups II and III). Circulating plasma hormone concentrations were influenced due to the BCS. Plasma cortisol, T3 and T4 increased as the BCS improved from lower to higher. In conclusion, better reproductive efficiency of rams of moderate BCS (3.0 and 3.5) than rams of lower (2.5) and higher BCS (4.0) indicates the importance of maintaining optimum body condition of breeding rams under hot semi‐arid environment.  相似文献

A study was conducted to assess the combined effect of heat stress and nutritional restriction on growth and reproductive performances in Malpura rams. Twenty‐eight adult Malpura rams (average body weight (BW) 66.0 kg) were used in this study. The rams were divided into four groups: CON (n = 7; control), HES (n = 7; heat stress), NUS (n = 7; nutritional stress) and COS (n = 7; combined stress). The study was conducted for a period of 2 months. CON and HES rams had ad libitum access to their feed while NUS and COS rams were under restricted feed (30% intake of CON rams) to induce nutritional stress. The HES and COS rams were kept in climatic chamber at 42 °C and 55% relative humidity for 6 h a day between 10 : 00 h and 16 : 00 h to induce heat stress. Body weight increased significantly (p < 0.05) in CON as compared to NUS and COS. When compared within groups, scrotal width morning, scrotal width afternoon, scrotal circumference morning and scrotal circumference afternoon were significantly (p < 0.05) larger in CON while smaller in COS rams. The higher testicular length was recorded both during morning (p < 0.05) and afternoon (p < 0.01) in COS rams while the lowest in NUS rams. The highest plasma testosterone concentration was recorded in CON and lowest in COS rams. Semen volume and mass motility also differed significantly (p < 0.05) between the groups. The highest semen volume and mass motility was recorded in CON and NUS while lowest in both HES and COS rams. It can be concluded from this study that when two stressors occur simultaneously, they may have severe impact on reproductive performance of rams.  相似文献

The effect of scrotal mange (Chorioptes bovis) on semen quality was assessed in a flock of rams during an outbreak of chorioptic mange and in rams with experimentally induced chorioptic mange. Semen quality of 21 rams with chorioptic mange lesions involving less than 10 cm2 of the scrotum was indistinguishable from that of control rams. Conversely, all 10 rams examined with lesions covering more than a third of the scrotum had poor semen quality. Between these 2 extremes some rams with relatively severe scrotal mange had semen of good quality while others with relatively minor scrotal lesions had semen of poor quality. The seminal degeneration and regeneration associated with the development and spontaneous cure of scrotal mange were very similar to that seen following experimental elevation of testicular temperature.  相似文献

Three groups of spring-born ram lambs were used to assess breed group differences in testicular growth patterns through 5 mo of age. Group 1 included 20 3/4-Finnish Landrace (Finn), 1/4-Rambouillet rams and 31 1/8-Finn, 7/8-Rambouillet rams. Group 2 included 23 3/4-Finn, 1/4-Dorset rams and 19 1/8-Finn, 7/8-Dorset rams. Group 3 included 21 black-faced (BF) rams (six Hampshire and 15 Suffolk) and 46 whitefaced (WF) rams (nine Dorset, 20 Barbados Blackbelly X Dorset, 10 Finn X Dorset and six Dorset X Finn). Scrotal circumference (C) was measured at 19, 43, 72, 100, 128 and 153 d in Group 1; at 20, 48, 76, 93 and 153 d in Group 2 and at 40, 60, 81, 103, 124 and 158 d in Group 3. Breed group X age interaction was tested to assess breed group differences in testicular growth patterns, and logistic curves were used to describe increases in scrotal circumference with age. In Group 1, 3/4-Finn and 1/8-Finn rams were similar in estimated final scrotal circumference at 150 d of age (260 and 259 mm, respectively), but rapid testicular growth began earlier in 3/4-Finn rams. The estimated age at which the growth rate in scrotal circumference was maximum was 81 d for 3/4-Finn rams and 93 d for 1/8-Finn rams. No differences were observed in testicular growth in Group 2 rams. However, in Group 3, smaller WF rams matured more rapidly than larger BF rams. Growth in scrotal circumference was most rapid at 99 d in BF rams and 88 d in WF rams. Within WF rams, Barbados Blackbelly X Dorset and Finn X Dorset rams matured earlier than Dorsets. In all groups, the primary breed difference was associated with age differences during the period of rapid testicular growth.  相似文献

There is a paucity of information on the relationships of testicular morphology, echotextural attributes, and blood flow dynamics with pubertal development of rams raised in a subtropical climate. Forty‐five Dorper rams (24 rams aged 8–11 months and 21 rams aged 12–24 months) were examined using a portable ultrasound scanner connected to a 7.5‐MHz transducer. Computer‐assisted analyses of testicular ultrasonograms utilized commercially available Image ProPlus® analytical software. Spectral Doppler scans of testicular arteries were performed immediately after scrotal (B‐mode) ultrasonography to determine peak systolic velocity (PSV), end‐diastolic velocity (EDV), resistive index (RI = [PSV?EDV]/PSV), and pulsatility index (PI = [SPV–EDV]/mean velocity) of the blood vessels. The length of the testes (9.7 ± 0.3 compared with 9.0 ± 0.2 cm) and scrotal circumference (33.3 ± 0.5 compared with 31.8 ± 0.4 cm) were greater (p < 0.05) but testicular depth (4.5 ± 0.1  compared with 4.9 ± 0.08 cm) was less (p < 0.05) in sexually mature compared with peripubertal rams. [Corrections added on 9 Jan 2019 after initial online publication: The testicular size values in the sentence were corrected.] There were no differences (p > 0.05) between the two age groups of Dorper rams in blood flow indices of testicular arteries. Mean numerical pixel values (100.5 ± 4.1 compared with 89.2 ± 4.8) and pixel heterogeneity (25.6 ± 0.6 compared with 23.6 ± 0.5) of testicular parenchyma were greater (p < 0.05) in peripubertal than in postpubertal rams. Semen volume was negatively correlated with PI of testicular arteries (r = ?0.57, p = 0.04). In summary, the attainment of sexual maturity in the rams of the present study was associated with significant changes in testicular length and depth, scrotal circumference, and parenchymal echogenicity/hetrogeneity but not in testicular volume and blood perfusion rates. Testicular artery PI can be used to predict the volume of ejaculate in rams.  相似文献

TESTICULAR PATHOLOGY OF MERINO RAMS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SUMMARY The scrotal contents of 2,281 Merino rams of wide age range examined at 3 abattoirs in Perth, Western Australia, showed a 40% prevalence of rams with 1 or more gross lesions. The percentage prevalence of gross lesions found on autopsy were: adhesions 21, testicular atrophy/hypoplasia 14, testicular calcification 13, congenital cyst of the epididymis 6, cryptorchidism 4, chronic epididymitis/scrotal abscesses 2, varicocoele 2, testicular aplasia1, seminoma1. The prevalence of lesions increased with age of rams. Testicular atrophy was often present when varicocoele, chronic epididymitis and scrotal abscess affected that side of the scrotal sac. Corynebacterium spp was the most frequent isolate from chronic epididymitis. Actinobacillus seminis was isolated once and Brucella ovis was not isolated. About 20% of the rams showed lesions compatible with a diagnosis of reproductive unsoundness. A large proportion of lesions were revealed only after removal of the scrotum and most of these did not appear to affect normal spermatogenesis except for an estimated 9% of rams, which showed mild atrophy/hypoplasia. Samples of these testes showed mild to moderate changes in spermatogenesis on histopathology. It was postulated that the latter group of rams might represent those ill-defined clinical cases which show equivocal results on appraisal of semen samples despite the presence of palpably normal testes.  相似文献

The objective was to determine the effects of a recombinant fusion protein anti-GnRH vaccine on testicular development, feedlot performance, and carcass quality of beef bulls. Crossbred beef bulls (n = 58, average weight 306 kg, 9 mo of age), were randomly allocated to two groups and received either an anti-GnRH vaccine (GnRH) or placebo (Control) by intramuscular injection on d 0, 56, and 112. There were group effects (P < 0.01; as a percentage of Control) on testicular weight (53%), daily sperm production (40%), and epididymal sperm reserves (16%). There were group x time interactions (P < 0.0001) for scrotal circumference and serum testosterone concentrations; at slaughter, bulls in the GnRH group had a smaller (P < 0.05) scrotal circumference (28.3 vs 33.9 cm) and lower (P < 0.05) serum testosterone concentrations (2.2 vs 8.6 ng/mL) than those in the Control group. Average daily gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency were not different between treatments during the backgrounding phase (d 0 to 84). During the finishing phase (d 98 to 182), ADG was greater (P < 0.05) for bulls in the Control group (1.69 vs 1.42 kg/d), as was carcass weight (6.9%; P < 0.01). However, GnRH bulls had numerically better feed efficiency (6.12 vs 7.08 kg DMI/kg gain; P < 0.23) and shear force values for ribeye that were 16% lower (P < 0.14) than Control bulls, warranting further investigation. Vaccinating bulls against GnRH suppressed testicular function, with growth and carcass characteristics similar to that expected with steers.  相似文献

The aim of the present work was to evaluate the breed and season effects on scrotal circumference (SC) and semen characteristics of 28 mature hair sheep rams kept under tropical conditions. SCs, sperm concentration (SPC) and abnormal sperm were significantly affected by breed effect (p < 0.001). The season effect was significant in SPC (p < 0.0001) while ejaculate volume, mass motility and SPC were affected by breed × season interaction effect (p < 0.001). It can be concluded that the magnitude of the breed and season effects were not sufficient to affect the reproductive capacity of hair sheep rams throughout the year.  相似文献

Ten male goats and five rams were examined from 11 and 15 weeks of age, respectively, for six months to study the ultrasonic appearance of normal testes and epididymides before and after puberty. Five adult rams with lesions of these organs were also examined. A portable, B-mode, real time scanner fitted with a 7.5 MHz, linear array transducer was used. The testis appeared as a homogeneous and moderately echogenic structure with a centrally located mediastinum testis represented by an hyperechogenic line in images taken in the longitudinal plane and by an almost circular spot in transverse images. The testicular capsule and skin were evident as a distinct hyperechogenic line encircling the testicular parenchyma. A thin non-echogenic layer of fluid, presumably between two layers of tunica vaginalis, was observed. The tail of the epididymis was more heterogeneous and less echogenic than the testis. The epididymal head was also less echogenic but homogeneous in texture, and the body of the epididymis was difficult to image. The pampiniform plexus was easily identified as numerous convoluted sonolucent tubular structures. The ultrasonic images of possible cases of epididymitis, spermatocele, testicular cyst and abscess and scrotal hernia are described.  相似文献

Standard breeding soundness examinations plus measurement of scrotal surface temperature (SST), internal/scrotal testicular temperatures, testicular ultrasonographic echotexture, daily sperm production, and epididymal sperm reserves were conducted on 129, 16-month-old crossbred beef bulls. There were significant positive linear correlations between SST and internal scrotal/testicular temperatures, a positive linear regression (P < 0.06) of bottom SST with the incidence of secondary sperm defects, but a negative linear regression (P < 0.01) with the incidence of primary sperm defects. Testicular echotexture had a positive linear regression with daily sperm production (P < 0.002) and testicular tone had a negative linear regression (P < 0.008) with epididymal sperm reserves. Scrotal circumference had a positive linear regression (P < 0.04) with the percentage of progressively motile sperm, a negative linear regression (P < 0.1) with the incidence of primary sperm defects, and a positive linear regression (P < 0.0001) with epididymal sperm reserves. In addition to seminal quality and scrotal circumference, testicular ultrasonographic echotexture has considerable promise for augmenting breeding soundness examinations of bulls.  相似文献

The hormone GnRH has a stimulatory effect on gonadotropin synthesis and secretion. The objective of the first study was to evaluate concentrations of FSH and LH in plasma of boars after successive treatment with SB75, a GnRH antagonist. Thirteen boars greater than 1 yr of age (eight White Composite [WC] and five Meishan [MS]) were injected once daily with SB75 (10 microg/kg of body weight) for 4 d. Plasma concentrations of LH and testosterone (T) decreased after 1 h from the first dose of SB75. After 12 h of treatment, LH gradually returned to pretreatment concentrations, but T remained suppressed (< 2 ng/mL) until after the last injection of SB75. There was a modest, but significant, reduction in FSH during treatment with SB75. The prolonged inhibitory effect of SB75 on suppression of plasma T concentrations, in the presence of pretreatment concentrations of LH, implied direct effects of SB75 at the testis. In the second experiment, testicular tissue from adult boars was incubated in the presence of three doses of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG; 0, .5, and 5 IU) with SB75 (250 ng/mL) or with Deslorelin, a GnRH agonist (500 ng/mL). Samples of media were collected every hour for 3 h, and concentrations of T and estrone (E1) were determined by RIA. Concentrations of T and E1 increased with time in response to treatment with hCG. Co-treatment with SB75 decreased media concentrations of T (P < .01) and E1 (P < .03) compared to controls (77.9 vs 85.7 +/- 2.0 and 4.7 vs 5.3 +/- .2 ng/g). In contrast, treatment with Deslorelin had no effect on the amount of T (P > .50) or E1 (P > .26) released with all dosages of hCG. These results indicate that a GnRH antagonist has a direct effect on the testis, decreasing amounts of T and E1 released from the Leydig cells; however, treatment with a GnRH agonist had no direct effect on release of these gonadal steroids. Thus, it remains unresolved whether the site of action of GnRH antagonist on testicular steroidogenesis is through a testicular GnRH receptor or through some other mechanism.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to characterize scrotal surface temperature (SST) in bulls treated with gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). In Experiment 1, Angus bulls (n = 10, 18 mo, 597 kg) were given GnRH (400 ng/kg) or saline, IV. Bottom SST increased approximately 1.7 degrees C (P < 0.005) over time (0 to 90 min) at an ambient temperature of 5 degrees C. However, there was no significant effect of GnRH treatment and temperature increases were attributed to stress. When the experiment was repeated at an ambient temperature of 25 degrees C, SST was elevated prior to treatment, with no subsequent significant increase. Experiment 2 was conducted with Charolais bulls (n = 6, 12-14 mo, 517 kg) with an emphasis on minimizing stress. Bottom SST increased approximately 2 degrees C (P < 0.05) between 0 and 45 min after GnRH treatment, supporting the hypothesis that GnRH treatment increases SST in bulls. In conclusion, it was apparent that stress, high ambient temperatures, and GnRH treatment can all increase SST in bulls.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate and assess the sequential pathological changes in the epididymis and testis of young rams injected intra-epididymally with Actinobacillus seminis. METHODS: Twenty yearling Suffolk and Suffolk-cross rams were randomly divided into two groups comprising 16 test and four control animals. Each test ram received 2.3 x 109 cfu/ml of A. seminis injected intra-epididymally. Every 24 h post-inoculation (p.i.), two test rams were randomly selected, euthanised, and necropsied, until the end of the experiment at 192 h p.i. One control animal was euthanised at 24 h, 48 h, 96 h and 144 h p.i., respectively. The reproductive tract of each ram was carefully examined, lesions photographed, and tissues cultured. Thin sections of tissue samples were fixed and examined by light microscopy; additionally, epididymal tissues were examined by scanning electron microscopy (ScEM). RESULTS: Gross lesions were observed in the cauda epididymis of all test rams, and ranged from swelling at 24 h p.i. through enlargement and granuloma formation from 72 h p.i., to gradual enlargement and increasing firmness by 192 h p.i. Gross testicular atrophy was observed in three rams. Histologically, spermatic granulomas were evident in the epididymis and the tunica vaginalis of 10 and four rams, respectively. Cauda epididymitis was present in all rams, and caput and corpus epididymitis in eight and four rams, respectively. Interstitial orchitis was observed in seven, testicular degeneration in 14, and localised and diffuse tunica vaginalitis in 12 rams. Epididymal vasculitis and infiltration of eosinophils were observed as early as 24 h p.i. Moderate disruption of the epididymal duct from 72 h p.i., with subsequent release of spermatozoa into the interstitium, was revealed by ScEM. Actinobacillus seminis was cultured from the granuloma of six test rams from 72 h p.i. CONCLUSIONS: Actinobacillus seminis has the ability to persist in the genitalia of young rams following experimental infection. Suppurative epididymitis is observed as early as 24 h p.i., and spermatic granuloma within 72 h p.i. Infiltration of eosinophils appears to be an early host response to the bacterium, and may play a role in the pathogenesis of the epididymitis.  相似文献

Clinical examination of 31 rams with evidence of Actinobacillus seminis infection revealed 15 cases with marked lesions of the scrotal contents, two cases with very mild lesions, one with testicular atrophy but no abnormality of the epididymides, and another 13 without any palpable abnormalities of the genitalia. The rams were from a Border Leicester flock and included 27 un-mated rams from 6 to 12 months old. Histological examinations of affected epididymides showed a mixed purulent and non-purulent inflammation, with cystic hyperplasia of the ductus epididymis. Interstitial fibrosis and spermatic granulomas were seen in chronic lesions. Bilateral testicular atrophy and seminal degeneration were found in the nine rams that were autopsied. The clinical and pathological features of the disease are similar to those of ovine brucellosis. A pyelonephritis of unknown significance was found in four of the nine rams examined.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that orexin-B acts directly on the anterior pituitary to regulate LH and growth hormone (GH) secretion, anterior pituitary cells from prepuberal gilts were studied in primary culture. On day 4 of culture, 10(5) cells/well were challenged with 0.1, 10 or 1000 nM GnRH; 10, 100 or 1000 nM [Ala15]-hGRF-(1-29)NH2 or 0.1, 1, 10 or 100 nM, orexin-B individually or in combinations with 0.1 and 1000 nM GnRH or 10 and 1000 nM GRF. Secreted LH and GH were measured at 4 h after treatment. Basal LH and GH secretion (control; n = 6 pigs) was 183 +/- 18 and 108 +/- 4.8 ng/well, respectively. Relative to control at 4 h, all doses of GnRH and GRF increased (P < 0.0001) LH and GH secretion, respectively. All doses of orexin-B increased (P < 0.01) LH secretion, except for the 0.1 nM dose. Basal GH secretion was unaffected by orexin-B. Addition of 1, 10 or 100 nM orexin-B in combinations with 0.1 nM GnRH increased (P < 0.001) LH secretion compared to GnRH alone. Only 0.1 nM (P = 0.06) and 100 nM (P < 0.001) orexin-B in combinations with 1000 nM GnRH increased LH secretion compared to GnRH alone. All doses of orexin-B in combination with 1000 nM GRF suppressed (P < 0.0001) GH secretion compare to GRF alone, while only 0.1 nM orexin-B in combination with 10 nM GRF suppressed (P < 0.01) GH secretion compared to GRF. These results indicate that orexin may directly modulate LH and GH secretion at the level of the pituitary gland.  相似文献

Three studies were conducted to determine the effects of exogenous melatonin (M) on changes in scrotal circumference (SC), fertility and reproductive hormone concentrations of rams. Rams were initially housed in barns with controlled photoperiod and given 16 wk of long (16L:8D) or short (8L:16D) days. In Studies I and II, implants of M were given for 40 to 80 d beginning at maximal SC. Results showed that implanted rams had greater (P less than .05) blood M concentrations than nonimplanted controls. However, M did not prevent testicular regression. In Study III, M was given to rams after testicular regression had occurred. Rams were implanted with M weekly for 6 or 4 wk, followed by a withdrawal period of 4 wk (6:4, 4:4 respectively). Results showed that M (6:4) stimulated (P less than .05) testicular growth compared with nonimplanted controls. Treatment of rams with M for 8 mo did not affect LHRH-induced LH release (P greater than .05), but it reduced basal and LHRH-induced testosterone release (P less than .05). Reproductive performance of rams in Studies I and III was compared with that of nonimplanted rams. Fertility of M-treated rams in the spring from Studies I and III (86% to 91%) was similar to that in autumn (93%). Fertility of rams from Studies I and III exceeded (P less than .05) that of nonimplanted rams in April (59% to 62%). Net lamb production from ewes mated in the spring was greater if rams were treated with M and(or) photoperiod.  相似文献

Scrotal circumference (SC), testicular diameter (TD) and testicular weight (TW) were measured at necropsy of 148 Merino rams of varying age (yearling: 110, 2- to 3-year-old: 5, 4-year-old: 28, greater than 7-year-old: 5). These rams, although culled from flocks in north western Queensland for poor conformation or advancing age, had no clinically palpable or gross necropsy lesions of the genitalia. Despite the fact that SC measurement was performed at necropsy on scrota with greatly varying wool cover and its diverse content of plant material (burrs and grass seeds), the correlation of SC with TW was positive, high and significant (r = 0.92, P less than 0.01). This correlation was greater than that between TD and TW (r = 0.91, P less than 0.01) even though both were measured after dissection of the scrotal contents. The clinically convenient SC measurement deserves wider application as an estimate of testicular weight and therefore fertility in rams.  相似文献

In horses, spermatogenesis normally occurs at an average intratesticular temperature of 35 °C; therefore, mechanisms for testicular thermoregulation are essential. Measuring the scrotal surface temperature by thermography is one of the methodologies used to evaluate the effectiveness of testicular thermoregulation. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the control of scrotal surface temperature and sperm quality in horses of different ages. In total, 24 Quarter Horse stallions were divided into three groups: YS (young stallions), AS (adult stallions) and OS (old stallions). Initially, we calculated the testicular volume (TV) and evaluated various aspects of the semen (sperm kinetics, plasma membrane integrity and sperm morphology) for all the animals. We also evaluated rectal temperature (RT), body surface temperature (BST,) and average scrotal surface temperature in the testicular region (SST) before (M0) and after sun exposure (M1). Differences were observed (p<0.05) between the RT and BST before and after sun exposure in all three groups. However, there were no differences (p>0.05) in the SST values at these two time points, thus demonstrating the efficiency of the mechanisms for testicular thermoregulation. The SST was similar (p>0.05) among all three groups. Based on these results, we conclude that fertile stallions of different age groups are able to maintain SST and measuring the heat radiating from the scrotum using a digital infrared thermographer. We can also conclude that measuring the heat radiating from the scrotum using a digital infrared thermographer is a practical and efficient tool for monitoring SST in horses.  相似文献
