Abstract

A great number of studies have shown that the stability of iron chelates as a function of pH is not the unique parameter that must be considered in order to evaluate the potential effectiveness of Fe‐chelates to correct iron chlorosis in plants cultivated in alkaline and calcareous soils. In fact, other factors, such as soil sorption on soil components or the competition among Fe and other metallic cations for the chelating agent in soil solution, have a considerable influence on the capacity of iron chelates to maintain iron in soil solution available to plants. In this context, the aim of this work is to study the variation in concentration of the main iron chelates employed by farmers under field conditions—Fe‐EDDHA (HA), Fe‐EDDHMA (MA), Fe‐EDDHSA (SA), Fe‐EDDCHA (CA), Fe‐EDTA (EDTA), and Fe‐DTPA (DTPA)—in the soil solution of a calcareous soil over time. To this end, soil incubations were carried out using a soil:Fe solution ratio corresponding to soil field capacity, at a temperature of 23°C. The soil used in the experiments was a calcareous soil with a very low organic matter content. The variation in concentration of Fe and Fe‐chelates in soil solution over time were obtained by measuring the evolution in soil solution of both the concentration of total Fe (measured by AAS), and the concentration of the ortho‐ortho isomers for Fe‐EDDHA and analogs or chelated Fe for Fe‐EDTA and Fe‐DTPA (measured by HPLC). The following chelate samples were used: a HA standard prepared in the laboratory and samples of HA, MA, SA, CA, Fe‐EDTA, and Fe‐DTPA obtained from commercial formulations present in the market. The percentage of iron chelated as ortho‐ortho isomers for HAs was: HA standard (100%); HA (51.78%); MA (60.06%); SA (22.50%); and CA (27.28%). In the case of Fe‐EDTA and Fe‐DTPA the percentages of chelated iron were 96.09 and 99.12, respectively. Results show that it is possible to classify the potential effectiveness of the different types of iron chelates used in our experiments as a function of two practical approaches: (i) considering the variation of total iron in soil solution over time, MA is the best performing product, followed by HA, CA, SA, DTPA, EDTA, and ferrous sulfate in the order listed and (ii) considering the capacity of the different iron chelates to maintain the fraction of chelated iron (ortho‐ortho isomers for HA, MA, SA, and CA and total chelated iron for EDTA and DTPA) in soil solution, the order is: SA > CA > HA > MA > EDTA ≈ DTPA. This result, that is related to the nature of the chelate and does not depend on the degree of chelated Fe in the products, indicates that SA and CA might be very efficient products to correct iron chlorosis. Finally, our results also indicate the suitability of this soil incubation methodology to evaluate the potential efficiency of iron compounds to correct iron chlorosis.  相似文献

An investigation was conducted using Typic Haplustept, sandy loam soil, to investigate the interactive effects of phosphorus (P) and manganese (Mn) fertilization on native iron (Fe) pools in soil and their availability to wheat (cv. PBW-343) crop. Phosphorus fertilization moved Fe from residual mineral fraction of Fe to manganese oxides (MnOX), organic matter (OM), amorphous (AMPOX), and crystalline (CRYOX) Fe and Al oxide fractions. However, Mn application decreased specifically adsorbed (SAD)–Fe and CRYOX–Fe but increased OM–Fe and mineral fraction of Fe. Available Fe in soil decreased as Olsen P and P:Mn ratio increased in the soil. Higher Olsen P (>60 mg P kg?1soil) reduced mean Fe uptake by shoot. P content and P:Mn ratio in soil as well as in root and shoot were inversely related to Fe concentration in both the plant parts. The role of soil Fe associated with oxides and organic matter was found most notable in Fe nutrition of wheat.  相似文献

锌是植物必需的营养元素,也是重金属污染元素之一。现代分子生物学的发展,极大地推动了植物体内与锌吸收运输有关转运蛋白的研究。目前发现,锌铁控制运转相关蛋白(ZIP)、自然抵抗相关巨噬细胞蛋白NRAMP、重金属ATPase酶、阳离子扩散协助蛋白CDF、Mg2+/H+的反向交换转运蛋白MHX等运输蛋白参与细胞内Zn2+离子的跨膜运输,调节植物细胞内Zn2+平衡与分配。利用数量遗传学手段在在水稻上已找到与缺锌植株死亡率和叶片青铜病发生率有关QTL位点。而在Thlaspi caerulescens 和Arabidopsis halleri植物上鉴定出控制锌含量的QTLs,为寻找控制植物高效积累Zn的遗传基础规律打下了基础。  相似文献

Zinc (Zn) is an essential nutrient for human beings, and most Zn intake occurs through vegetables or cereals such as rice (Oryza sativa L.) grains. Recently, we detected Zn as well as cadmium, which may be partitioned to rice grains, in the phloem saps from the uppermost internodes of rice and in the xylem saps from the cut stems at early grain-filling. To quantify Zn transport to the grains via the phloem and xylem, a mathematical model previously developed for cadmium transport to rice grains was applied. We examined the translocation of zinc into the grains of rice plants at early grain-filling by feeding zinc-65 (65Zn) via a root-bathing medium, through culm cuts above and below the flag-leaf nodes, and through the flag leaves. The estimate made using the mathematical model and experimental data for three types of 65Zn transport suggests that the grain Zn may be accumulated predominantly via the phloem through two means of transport, phloem transport of stored Zn from the leaves and, more importantly, xylem-to-phloem transfer at the nodes from Zn as it is being absorbed. The Zn transport via the phloem to the grains is more selective than that of cadmium, a non-nutrient element, as also evidenced by the greater transport of cadmium to the glumes via the xylem.  相似文献

In soil-mantled landscapes, downslope sediment transport occurs via disturbance-driven processes that vary with climate and vegetation change. To help constrain the long-term (? 10 yr) pattern and rate of soil mixing and transport in forests, we analyzed the distribution of tephra grains in soil along a hillslope transect in the Blue Mountains, SE Washington. Deposited within a loess mantle, tephra associated with Mt. Mazama (7.7 cal. kyr B.P.) serves as a marker bed for estimating erosion and transport rates. Moving downslope, the buried tephra horizon is progressively exhumed and becomes increasingly mixed in the upper soil layer, reflecting disturbance and transport via tree root growth and turnover. This pattern also implies increasing erosion rates downslope and our hillslope transect becomes increasingly convex coincident with progressive exhumation of the tephra layer. This systematic correspondence between topographic form, specifically, local convexity, and surface lowering is consistent with theoretical models for which soil transport rates depend on slope inclination. From our analysis, calibrated coefficients for a linear, slope-dependent transport model are on the order of 10− 3 m2yr− 1, consistent with previous work in forested loess-mantled landscapes. In addition, our results reveal both the high degree of soil mixing over millennial timescales and the local variability of mixing in forested landscapes. Furthermore, the results enable us to quantify the amount of energy expended by trees in mixing and transporting soil and the net sediment transport fraction of the net primary productivity NPP of the ecosystem.  相似文献

Striga hermonthica, Striga asiatica and Striga gesneroides are obligate root parasites that cause severe yield losses in cereals and legumes in sub-Saharan Africa. Genetic control of Striga through resistance is widely considered to be the most practical and economically feasible method for long term control. The paper presents a comprehensive account of the Striga resistance mechanisms and environmental limitations to their usage in sub-Saharan Africa. Components of Striga resistance in cereals and legumes include low germination stimulant production, low haustorial initiation factor, mechanical barriers, incompatibility, antibiosis and Striga avoidance due to root growth habits. The successful exploitation of resistance has been limited by existence of specificity towards hosts, parasites that have evolved races specific host cultivars, Striga genetic variance which enables parasite to adapt to new resistance alleles and diverse hosts which support the parasite even in the absence of cereals together with low fertility due to nutrient mining in the smallholder sector. The results imply that different resistance mechanism may need to be present in genetically heterogeneous varieties or cereals with different resistance mechanisms may be rotated in the same field. Comprehensive Striga management systems should also address soil fertility in the small holder farmers of sub-Saharan Africa.  相似文献

Abstract

Monochasma savatieri Franch. ex Maxim is a perennial, parasitic herb used in traditional Chinese medicine and its wild resources have declined sharply in recent years. For a long time, the research on fertilization of parasitic plants mostly focused on parasitic weeds. Despite its urgent need, there are few studies discussing the nutrient requirements of medicinal threatened parasitic plants. In this study, we investigated the growth response of M. savatieri to inorganic solutes. By using an orthogonal design in pot cultivation, the effects of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium on growth traits, haustoria formation, and biomass of M. savatieri were determined under greenhouse conditions. The results showed that M. savatieri had a rather significant growth response to different nutrients supplied. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium significantly influenced growth traits, haustoria formation, and biomass of M. savatieri, but differ in the degree. M. savatieri experienced a more significant increase in nitrogen sufficient than phosphorus or potassium sufficient in terms of seedling height (SH), maximum root length, and biomass. There were significant positive correlations between tested parameters. The regression equation for SH, total leaf length, and number of haustoria both showed relatively high R2 values and could be sensitive available indicators. In the absence of hosts and haustoria-inducing factors, M. savatieri was capable of haustoria formation and autotrophic growth for a period of time. We concluded that M. savatieri had a certain demand for inorganic nutrients. The appropriate supply of inorganic nutrients promoted growth and development of M. savatieri.  相似文献

We studied the composition of a litter detrital community in a temperate coniferous forest using stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon. Samples of mineral soil, bulk litter material, macroarthropods and understory plants were collected from ten experimental forest stands. Half of the stands were previously thinned 17–42 years ago, the other half served as controls. Values of δ15N and δ13C were based on the analysis of almost 500 individuals of at least 22 species in 11 arthropod families. The isotopic analysis showed a significant increase in δ15N and δ13C values with soil depth. Isotopic signatures of macroarthropods ranged from −26.51‰ to −20.52‰ for δ13C and −2.85‰ to 5.10‰ for δ15N. All consumers showed levels of 13C enrichment substantially higher than those of primary producers and litter. Predators were generally significantly more 15N enriched than detritivores and herbivores, but their δ13C levels were similar to those of primary consumers. Our data indicate that this community consists of at least 2–3 trophic levels with a considerable amount of variation in the 15N enrichment among detritivores and predators. We suggest that the spread of δ15N values of predators likely reflects the diversity of potential prey among detritivores and a varying degree of intraguild predation among different species. Our findings generally agree closely with the results of similar studies from other forest litter communities. Thinning did not appear to influence the overall isotopic composition of the detrital food web. Extensive omnivory and intraguild predation among litter consumers may buffer long-term effects of thinning on the trophic structure of these species-rich communities.  相似文献

With a significant rise in popularity of nature areas, particularly in urban settings like Singapore, Nature Reserves are being increasingly opened for public recreational use. In the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (BTNR), the only remnant primary rain forest reserve in Singapore, trail networks are being expanded to meet this growing public demand. The physical condition of the present trail networks was assessed by monitoring the changes in surface compaction, soil moisture, infiltration rates, soil organic matter content, root density, litter cover and rill development. These parameters were compared with similar data obtained from undisturbed forested slopes to analyse the degree of changes brought about by trail usage. Significant changes occurred in all measured parameters, indicating observable degradation of the trails, particularly on vulnerable slopes. These changes are due to the heavy and increased use of the forest by visitors. Penetration resistance and shear strength of the top surface layers of the trails are important indicators of trail degradation status and these have been plotted, using GIS, to demarcate trails under different levels of stress. This field monitoring provides a relevant local assessment of trail conditions. It has potential for use in decision‐making in future planning and forest management under similar site conditions.
