‘Helali’ is a late season date palm cultivar. At the mature (Bisir) stage, the fruit are astringent as a result of high contents of soluble tannins, and removal of tannins is necessary for the fruit to be edible. During the harvesting season, only 30–40% of the total fruit might normally ripen (Rutab stage) on the tree and the remaining fruit fail to ripen. This study showed that bunch bagging with different materials such as black or blue polyethylene bags, white ‘agrlsafe’ (polypropylene fleece) and paper bags during the growing season significantly increased the rate of fruit ripening and increased Rutab yield per bunch. In this respect, black and blue polyethylene bags were the most effective followed by ‘agrlsafe’ and paper bags. Preharvest ethrel application significantly increased Rutab fruit yield per bunch compared to the controls. There were no significant differences in Rutab yield per bunch between sprays or injection of ethrel into the bunch peduncle. Postharvest dipping of fruit at the Bisir stage in ethrel at 4.2 ml/l and abscisic acid at 1.0 mM significantly enhanced ripening, compared to the controls. However, ABG-3168 (an ethylene blocker) application at 3.33 g/l significantly inhibited ripening, suggesting a role for ethylene in the ripening process. Ethanol vapor significantly hastened ripening of Bisir fruit over 10 days at ambient conditions in desiccators. The response of immature fruit (according to fruit density and TSS) to ethanol vapor was much greater than mature ones. Also, immersion of fruit in water for 10 h significantly increased fruit ripening compared to the controls, but to a lesser extent. It is concluded that ‘Helali’ date ripening could be hastened by bunch bagging during growth, or by exposing the Bisir fruit to ethanol vapor following harvest. Neither treatment showed any negative impact on the overall quality characteristics of ripe fruit, suggesting that they may be practical tools for increasing the ripening rate of Bisir ‘Helali’ dates.  相似文献

Fruit maturity stage at harvest influences the response to postharvest storage conditions and bioactive compounds content. In this work fruit from two purple eggplant cultivars (Monarca and Perla Negra) were harvested at 12, 15, 18, 20 and 23 d after fruit set (designated as stages I through V) and changes in size, dry weight, calyx area, cell wall material (AIR, alcohol insoluble residue), firmness, respiration, and antioxidants (peel anthocyanins and pulp carotenoids, ascorbic acid, phenolics and chlorogenic acid) were determined. In a second set of experiments the postharvest performance of fruit harvested at stages I (“baby” eggplants), III and IV (traditional harvest stages) during storage at 0 or 10 °C was assessed. Fruit growth continued until late ripening in contrast to calyx expansion and peel anthocyanin accumulation, which were relatively earlier events. Fruit dry weight decreased between stages I and III, remaining constant afterwards. “Baby” eggplants had higher antioxidant capacity, chlorogenic acid (ChA), carotenoids and ascorbic acid contents than late-harvested fruit. ChA predominated in pulp placental tissues at stage I, spreading throughout the fruit core at as ripening progressed. No marked differences in dry mass, antioxidant capacity or responses to postharvest storage regimes were found between fruit harvested at stages III and IV. Late pickings increased yields and led to less dense fruit, which had lower respiration rates. Within this harvest window, storage at 10 °C maximized quality maintenance. In contrast “baby” eggplants stored better at 0 °C. Understanding the developmental changes in bioactive compounds and postharvest performance may help in the maximization of fruit antioxidant properties as well as in the selection of the optimal handling conditions for each ontogenic stage.  相似文献

Heat-shocks were used to reduce the development of chilling injury symptoms during ripening of tomato fruit (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. Micro-Tom). Mature green tomatoes were immersed in 30-50 °C water for 3-9 min before being chilled at 2.5 °C for 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, or 14 days, and then held at 20 °C for an additional 7-14 days. The affect of both heat-shock and chilling treatments were independent of fruit weight. Measured at 20 °C after 14 days of chilling, fruit exposed to 40 °C for 7 min exhibited reduced chilling injury symptoms, as measured by their advanced ripening score and decreased rate of ion leakage into an isotonic 0.2 M mannitol solution. Reduced rates of leakage from the symplastic compartment probably contributed to the 2-fold decrease in the amount of ions in the apoplastic space, when compared to the control. A subsequent paper will report the results of metabolic profiling of Micro-Tom tomato fruit subjected to treatments that significantly decreased their development of chilling injury symptoms.  相似文献

Four expansin cDNA fragments, EjEXPA1, EjEXPA2, EjEXPA3 and EjEXPA4, were isolated and characterized from loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) fruit. EjEXPA1 mRNA accumulated consistently with the increase in fruit firmness in 0 °C storage of ‘Luoyangqing’ (LYQ) fruit, where chilling injury with increased fruit firmness due to lignification was observed. EjEXPA1 mRNA levels were lower in fruit that underwent low temperature conditioning (LTC, 6 d at 5 °C then 4 d at 0 °C), and in 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treated fruit, in both cases where chilling injury was alleviated. Fruit of the ‘Baisha’ (BS) cultivar soften after harvest rather than increase in firmness, and high expression levels of EjEXPA1 and EjEXPA4 accompanied the softening of BS fruit stored at 20 °C; such mRNA accumulation was much lower when fruit were stored at 0 °C, where softening was significantly inhibited by the low temperature. Very low expression of EjEXPA2 and EjEXPA3 was observed during storage of both LYQ and BS fruit under the different storage conditions. Our results showed that of the four genes characterized, EjEXPA1 might be associated with chilling-induced lignification while both EjEXPA1 and EjEXPA4 were closely related to softening of loquat fruit during the postharvest period.  相似文献

The primary aim of this study was to identify metabolites associated with chilling tolerance that was engendered by a heat-shock treatment of tomato fruit pericarp (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. Micro-Tom). Harvested mature-green fruit were immersed in 20 or 40 °C water for 7 min (‘Heat-Shock’) and then stored at 2.5 °C for 0 or 14 d (‘Chilled’). A reduction in chilling injury symptoms (i.e., slow or abnormal ripening, increased ion leakage, and increased respiration following chilling) was used to select this heat-shock treatment as optimal. Using GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) metabolite profiling, 363 analytes were detected in fruit pericarp of which 65 are identified metabolites. Principal Component Analysis of these data led to distinct groups among the samples based on their treatments; ‘Chilled’ and ‘Chilled + Heat-Shocked’ fruit were markedly different from each other, while the ‘Non-Chilled Control’ and ‘Heat-Shocked’ fruit were similar and grouped closer to the ‘Chilled + Heat-Shocked’ fruit. These results indicate that the heat treatment provided protection from chilling in part by altering levels of fruit metabolites. The levels of arabinose, fructose-6-phosphate, valine and shikimic acid appear to be associated with this heat-shock induced chilling tolerance since their levels were altered in the ‘Chilled’ samples (p < 0.05), relative to the control and the heat-shocked protected fruit. We also describe the metabolites we identified that could be further studied as being indicative of incipient chilling injury in mature-green tomato fruit.  相似文献

A set of near-isogenic lines (NILs) of melon (Cucumis melo L.) was used to test the relationship between the climacteric pattern and postharvest disorders at harvest and after 30 days at 8 °C. The NILs contained different chromosome introgressions in the linkage group III from the non-climacteric exotic Korean accession PI 161375 transferred into the genetic background of the non-climacteric Spanish cultivar ‘Piel de Sapo’ (PS). A quantitative trait locus (QTL) in this linkage group induced climacteric behavior in eight NILs accompanied by a peak of ethylene production and fruit dehiscence to different degrees. The cultivar ‘Nicolás’ and one NIL showed a non-climacteric pattern of respiration rate and ethylene production. The climacteric NILs were used to test the relationship between this pattern and postharvest disorders. The reference climacteric lines ‘Fado’ and ‘Védrantais’ were more sensitive to CI and associated Cladosporium rot than the NILs or PS. In general, a more intense climacteric behavior was accompanied by fruit dehiscence, and higher total losses and greater skin scald after storage, than in PS. A higher incidence of chilling injury (CI) in the climacteric NILs was found compared with the non-climacteric ones, although with exceptions (one NIL for CI in the form of scald; the same NIL and one more for pitting). The climacteric onset and netting scald were not related, and CI in the form of skin spots was only found in climacteric NILs and was positively correlated with the maximum peak of ethylene production. Some climacteric NILs did not follow the rule of a higher susceptibility to other disorders and decay after storage compared with PS, such as for example in fruit over-ripening (detected externally or internally), Cladosporium rot at the peduncle and Alternaria rot. Mealiness was independent of climacteric behavior. Three climacteric NILs obtained better flavor scores after storage than PS, although the maximum peak of ethylene production was positively correlated with off-flavor. Genotypic correlation between disorder data and the physiological data of climacteric fruit revealed positive (flavor index) or negative postharvest consequences (skin injuries, rots or off-flavors). At least one QTL can be assigned to most of the quality traits analyzed.  相似文献
