  • ? Variation in the ability of western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don) populations to withstand water stress may exist because this species is found in coastal and interior biogeoclimatic subzones representing the full range of precipitation regimes in British Columbia, Canada.
  • ? Seven western redcedar populations from locations in British Columbia, representing a wide range of habitat types, were assessed for their gas exchange and water relations response to controlled drought.
  • ? Before drought, population variation occurred in stomatal conductance, net CO2 assimilation rate and intrinsic water use efficiency and the relative water content at turgor loss point. During drought, populations had different responses of net CO2 assimilation to decreasing predawn shoot water potential. After drought, populations differed in stomatal conductance and intrinsic water use efficiency, plus osmotic potential at turgor loss point, osmotic potential at saturation and apparent cuticular transpiration. Western redcedar populations from drier-inland habitats had a lower osmotic potential at turgor loss point, lower relative water content at turgor loss point and lower apparent cuticular transpiration in response to drought than populations from coastal origin with temperate maritime habitat.

  • ? Powdery mildew is a major fungal disease of oaks in Europe. Recent studies using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences suggested the presence of four different lineages (putative species). The objective of the study was to investigate the spatial distribution of these lineages/species and, in particular, to test the hypothesis of a spatial differentiation, at various scales: regional (France), altitudinal (a Pyrenean transect) and local (within a forest plot).
  • ? Detection methods for the four ITS types were developed: (1) single strand conformation polymorphism analysis (SSCP); (2) PCR amplifications, for which specific primers were designed. SSCP proved to be efficient for the detection of Erysiphe alphitoides and E. quercicola types. In contrast, the rarer ITS types corresponding to E. hypophylla and Phyllactinia guttata (sensu lato) were only detected by specific amplification.
  • ? The study confirmed the strong predominance of the ITS sequence associated with E. alphitoides at all spatial scales (with a frequency higher than 80%). Isolates presumably belonging to E. quercicola (i.e. with same ITS type), a recently described species not yet recorded in Europe, were also found in all French regions at a significant frequency (15% at national level).

  • ? Interspecific differences in tree growth patterns with respect to biotic and abiotic factors are key for understanding forest structure and dynamics, and predicting potential changes under climate change.
  • ? Repeated observations from the Spanish Forest Inventory (SFI) were used to parameterize maximum likelihood estimators of tree growth as a function of tree size, competition indices and climate for Pinus pinaster, P. sylvestris, Quercus ilex and Q. pyrenaica.
  • ? Significant responses to both biotic and abiotic factors were found, with interspecific differences in species performance along competition, temperature and precipitation gradients. Q. ilex was the species most tolerant to competition while P. pinaster was the species most sensitive to climatic variation. Species relative positions shifted along gradients of these factors with rank reversals in species performance along size, competition and climatic gradients.
  • ? The results based on average growth matched previous forestry classifications and experimental studies on relative growth rate (RGR).

  • ? Oak powdery mildew severity (Erysiphe alphitoides) is usually mild in Europe because epidemics start late in spring, at the end of the first oak growth unit maturation. However, the disease can occasionally be very severe when strong infection occurs early during the development of the first growth unit, suggesting that host-pathogen synchrony in spring could be a critical factor in disease severity.
  • ? We studied the timing of ascospore production in a given environment for four E. alphitoides populations sampled from SW France to the Czech Republic to determine whether this trait shows variation within Europe.
  • ? Timing of ascospore production was clearly influenced by environmental factors as chasmothecia from a single origin showed very different dates of optimal ascospore production when transferred for overwintering in locations with different climate. In common garden experiments, no differences were observed between populations for the date of optimal ascospore production.
  • ? Results suggest little genetic differentiation for timing of ascospore production for E. alphitoides populations across Europe and therefore a lack of local adaptation to their host phenology. Availability in ascospore inoculum is limited during host budburst, explaining the low infection usually observed on the first oak growth unit.

  • ? It is agreed that climate (precipitation and temperature) influences the distribution of plant species. Near the margins of a species’ natural range, climate becomes limiting to physiological processes. There, climate change may be expected to have a significant impact on tree growth and the species’ ranges may be altered.
  • ? In order to assess what influence climate change could exert on the distribution of pine species at their margin, radial growth trends in ring-width chronologies over the last century were analysed. In the French Mediterranean area where climate change is characterized by increased temperature, forest plots were selected along an altitudinal transect on the north-facing slope of the Sainte-Baume mountain (Bouches-du-Rhône, France) where the ranges of Pinus sylvestris and Pinus halepensis overlap.
  • ? Two growth patterns were identified. For P. halepensis, radial growth has increased at all altitudes indicating that climate change has improved growth conditions of this species near the margin of its ecological range. For P. sylvestris, radial growth has increased only at low altitudes and even decreased at high altitudes.

  • ? In the dense tropical rainforest understorey, saplings exhibit different growth strategies aiming at reaching light levels better fitting their ecology. Investing mainly in height growth, at the expense of their width, a lot are close to mechanical instability. Tachigali melinonii, a long living heliophilic tree species, is frequently observed to be extremely slender and supported by neighbours. Such observations suggest an active growth control through the perception of mechanical environment.
  • ? Mechanical environment or light availability, which one is the most influent on growth and slenderness (H/D)? To test this question, we recorded growth of control and staked saplings of two species with contrasting habits and ecology: T. melinonii, and Dicorynia guianensis, along a natural light gradient.
  • ? Dicorynia, the more stable, responded more clearly to the staking treatment, showing slenderness increase when light is available, whereas for Tachigali, only light availability governed growth.

  • ? Nitrogen (N) exists in the soil in a variety of different forms and thus plants may avoid competition by taking up N as different chemical forms.
  • ? This study examined the uptake of nitrate, ammonium and glycine by three co-occurring species of Eucalyptus (E. obliqua, E. radiata and E. rubida) from dry sclerophyll forest in south-eastern Australia. Species preference for N forms was determined by measuring uptake of glycine, nitrate and ammonium from 15N-labelled solutions containing equimolar 100 μmol L? concentrations of all three N forms. KCl extracts were used to assess the relative abundance of the different forms of N in the soil’s exchangeable pool.
  • ? KCl extracts of soil indicated that amino acids comprised 30–40% of the soluble non-protein N, while ammonium varied from 10–70% and nitrate from 5–70%. In all species, ammonium was the preferred source of nitrogen and was taken up 2.5–4.5 times faster than glycine, and 30–50 times faster than nitrate. Species did not differ in preference for N-forms (species*N-form interaction, not significant).
  • ? This study indicates that nitrate, ammonium and amino acids are all present in soil, and thus there is the potential for niche differentiation based on chemical forms of N.   • ? Boundary line release criteria are increasingly applied to evaluate forest disturbance histories from tree-ring data. However, a number of important properties central to the technique have not been evaluated, including: (i) the ability of boundary line release criteria to standardize releases across various sites, species, and tree life stages (ii) the minimum sample sizes necessary for developing boundary lines, and (iii) the degree to which the criteria can resolve the degree of crown exposure following a disturbance event.
  • ? In an analysis of eleven North American tree species, boundary line release criteria do not fully compensate for declines in release response a tree experiences with increasing age and size, with the exception Tsuga canadensis.

  • ? Species distributed along wide environmental ranges are expected to be either plastic or adapted to local optima. The elucidation of which of these alternatives prevails, is crucial in planning breeding and conservation strategies for not yet domesticated species. Austrocedrus chilensis (Cupressaceae) is the most commercially important conifer of the temperate forests of Argentina and the target of a domestication program. A steep precipitation gradient characterizes its Argentinean range.
  • ? Variation within and differentiation among four natural populations of this Patagonian cypress representative of two contrasting precipitation regimes (>1 300 and 330 mm per y) were assessed by analyzing several morpho/architectural traits in one-year-old seedlings grown in a greenhouse.
  • ? Progenies from one of the two xeric populations did not differ from those corresponding to both humid-site populations. The two most variable populations in terms of additive genetic variance belonged to contrasting precipitation regimes. Differentiation among populations was low as measured by each and every variable (average Q st = 0.088). Morphological traits related to the main axis size would have a dubious adaptive meaning.

  • ? The effect of climatic variables (temperature and precipitation) on radial growth of the Mediterranean Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) was studied using dendrochronological techniques in the Iberian Peninsula.
  • ? Ten tree-ring width chronologies, along the central distribution area of the species, were built. Chronology variability was analysed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for the period 1952–2005.
  • ? The first principal component (PC1) explained 56% of tree-growth variability. Tree-growth association with climate was analysed at regional and local scales using correlation coefficient and bootstrapped response functions.
  • ? Radial growth at both scales was positively correlated with rainfall during and prior to the growing season at all sites, and with summer rainfall before the growing season at five sites. Mean temperature effect changed according to the sampling site, from non-significant at the highest sites to significant (positive relationship in winter) at the lowest sites.   • ? Temperature is suggested to determine the upper limit of tree life. Therefore, future climate warming may be of importance for tree distribution within the European Alps, where low temperatures limit carbon metabolism.
  • ? We focused on the effects of air and soil temperature on net photosynthesis (P n) of Pinus cembra an evergreen climax species of the timberline ecotone of the Central Austrian Alps. Light response and temperature response curves were estimated along an altitudinal gradient ranging from the forest limit up to the krummholz limit in both summer and fall.
  • ? In general, P n was significantly lower in fall as compared to summer. Nevertheless, independent from season mean P n values tended to increase with elevation and were positively correlated with root zone temperatures. The specific leaf area by contrast declined with increasing elevation. Furthermore, the temperature optimum of net photosynthesis declined with increasing elevation and was positively correlated with the mean maximum air temperature of the 10 days prior the date of measurement.
  • ? Thus, our findings appear to reflect a long-term adaptation of the photosynthetic apparatus of Pinus cembra to the general temperature conditions with respect to elevation combined with a short term acclimation to the prevailing temperature regime.

  • ? Two decades after the launching of the monitoring program of forest ecosystems in Europe (ICP forests), a unique data set is now available regarding the foliar nutritional status of the main broad-leaved species growing in much-diversified sites (soil, climate).
  • ? This study focuses on the foliar concentration time series (1993 to 2005) of the French (RENECOFOR), Walloon and Luxemburg broad-leaved plots. The aim is to show long-term trends while taking the inter-plot and inter-annual variability into account.
  • ? Two kinds of statistical processing were used to analyze the data on foliar chemistry: principal component analysis (PCAs) and linear mixed models. In general, the main temporal trends reveal a decrease in the foliar P concentration and a decrease in the foliar Ca concentration, except for European beech on acid soils.

  • ? To investigate the effect of climate on radial growth in young plantation grown teak (Tectona grandis L.), growth ring width was measured in 105 trees and correlated to precipitation and temperature data.
  • ? The social status of trees within the stand was also determined and cross-sectional area (CSA) for the trunk correlated to the proportion of heartwood (HW) within the tree. HW develops asymmetrically in leaning stems of some conifer species, but it is not known if this phenomenon also occurs in broadleaf species. Therefore, we measured HW proportion in leaning and straight stems, along with the number of growth rings in the HW.
  • ? Annual ring width depended strongly on mean monthly temperature during the rainy season and the most significant relationships were found corresponding to the months of June and July. With regard to the weaker relationship between precipitation and radial growth, correlations were highest during the period of bud-break at the beginning of the rainy season.
  • ? The very high stand density affected radial growth, particularly in suppressed trees, which responded little to thinning operations. HW formation was greatest in dominant trees, and was highly regressed with stem CSA.
  • ? Therefore, rapid growth of young stands should be encouraged by reducing stand density. Asymmetric HW formation occurred in both leaning and straight trees, and was significantly greater along the upper sides of leaning stems.   • ? Several reports on annual plants have already shown the involvement of epigenetic modifiers such as DNA methylation in their adaptation to abiotic stresses.
  • ? Nevertheless, the genotypic variations of epigenetic modifiers, their possible correlations with morphological traits and the impact of water deficit have not been described for perennial plants.
  • ? Six genotypes of Populus deltoides × P. nigra were subjected or not to a moderate water deficit treatment. Various morphological traits such as the height of the plants, their biomass and the total leaf area were measured to characterize the productivity in both conditions. Levels of DNA methylation, histone acetylation and the activities and isoform accumulation of the corresponding enzymes were measured at the shoot apex, the site of morphogenesis. Genotypic variation was observed for the morphological traits and the epigenetic variables and correlations were established among them. Genotypic variation for DNA methylation was detected in hybrid poplars. A positive correlation was demonstrated between DNA methylation percentage and productivity under well watered conditions.
  • ? While there was a general decrease of growth for all genotypes in response to a moderate water deficit, genotypic dependant variations of DNA methylation were found suggesting different strategies among hybrids.

  • ? The performance of ten commonly used taper equations for predicting both stem form and volume in balsam fir [Abies balsamea (L.) Mill], red spruce[Picea rubens (Sarg.)], and white pine[Pinus strobus (L.)] in the Acadian Region of North America was investigated.
  • ? Results show that the Kozak (2004) and Bi (2000) equations were superior to the other equations in predicting diameter inside bark for red spruce and white pine, while the Valentine and Gregoire (2001) equation performed slightly better for balsam fir.
  • ? For stem volume, the Clark et al. (1991) equation provided the best predictions across all species when upper stem diameter measurements were available, while the Kozak (2004) and compatible taper equation of Fang et al. (2000) performed well when those measurements were unavailable.
  • ? The incorporation of crown variables substantially improved stem volume predictions (mean absolute bias reduction of 7–15%; root mean square error reduction of 10–15%) for all three species, but had little impact on stem form predictions.

  • ? For assessing forest thinning effects at large (i.e. continental) scale, data scarcity and technical limitations prevent the application of localized or individual-based thinning models.
  • ? Here we present a simple general framework to analyze and predict the effects of thinning on growth and mortality, including the following stand density development. The effects are modeled in relative terms so that the model can be parameterized based on any thinning experiment that includes an unthinned control, regardless of site conditions and stand age.
  • ? The model was tested against observed thinning effects on growth and mortality from five temperate and boreal species (all species pooled r 2 = 0.51). It predicted a maximum increase in net stem biomass increment of 16% and a reduction in density-related mortality of 75% compared to un-thinned conditions at stand densities of around 70% of the maximum (increment optimal density).
  • ? A sensitivity analysis revealed overlapping ranges of near optimal density (net increment within 95% of optimal) among all tested species, suggesting that one thinning scenario can be used for many species. The simple and general formulation of thinning effects based on only five parameters allows easy integration with a wide range of generic forest growth models.

  • ? Water oak (Quercus nigra L.) is a tardily deciduous species commonly planted in afforestation projects in the Lower Mississippi River Alluvial Valley, USA. Field performance is often marked by low survival rates and top dieback, which may be associated with poor physiological quality of planting stock.
  • ? We investigated physiological status of cold stored (2–4 °C; CS) and freshly lifted (FL) seedlings during the period between lifting and planting (December — February). In mid-February, seedlings were transplanted into a controlled greenhouse environment for 90 d to evaluate post-transplant growth performance.
  • ? Net photosynthetic rates were positive until late January (generally greater in CS seedlings) and became negative thereafter. FL seedlings generally had lower LT50 values from freeze-induced electrolyte leakage (FIEL), reflecting greater cold hardiness. FIEL of foliage provided the best indicator of physiological status, though terminal buds may serve as a suitable substitute. All seedlings experienced top dieback following transplant; CS seedlings had less relative root-collar diameter, height, and root volume increments.
  • ? Cold storing seedlings did not appear to prolong dormancy, increase stress resistance, or hold promise as a means to improve outplanting success. Regardless of storage regime, seedlings appeared to be most cold hardy and perhaps stress resistant until late January.

Seedlings of seven pine species or hybrids, Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii, Pinus virginiana, Pinus echinata, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus thunbergii × Pinus massoniana and Pinus × rigitaeda, were inoculated in a greenhouse with 100, 1 000 and 10 000 pathogenic nematodes, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, to compare initial symptom development and to evaluate susceptibility to pinewood nematodes.

Genetic types were significantly different in the starting day of needle discoloration (χ2 = 43.48; P < 0.001) and the period from nematode inoculation to seedling death (χ2 = 32.85; P > 0.001), but treatment groups were not statistically different in the days from inoculation to seedling death in any of the pine species.
  • ? There was no relationship between seedling mortality and the number of nematodes recovered from infected seedlings. Only eight of the nematode-inoculated seedlings remained alive by day 83 after inoculation, including four seedlings each of P. echinata and P. × rigitaeda grown from bulked seed collections.

  • ? The aim of this study is to assess the impact of drought on insect-tree relationships. Survival and feeding performances of leaf-beetles, Chrysomela populi put in cages with leaves of host-plants submitted to different levels of water stress were compared.
  • ? Ninety 1-year-old poplar (Populus × euramericana) cuttings were grown in a greenhouse, and distributed into 3 groups submitted to different water treatments during six weeks. Adult C. populi were then encaged for four days with these cuttings, together with the five terminal leaves of a twig. Beetle survival and consumed leaf areas were then determined.
  • ? Predawn leaf water potential values indicated that the drought treatments induced different levels of plant water stress. Plant height growth and total leaf numbers were reduced by plant stress. Beetle survival and leaf areas eaten were also reduced proportionally to plant water deficit.
  • ? In conclusion, this experiment suggests that drought has a negative impact on C. populi survival and feeding.

  • ? Percent loss of hydraulic conductivity (PLC) is an important measure in plant water relations, but the available methods differ and results have rarely been compared.
  • ? We compared PLC measured in Norway spruce (Picea abies) by quantifying conductivity before and after removing emboli, either by flushing with high water pressure or by infiltration under a partial vacuum, with relative water loss and staining conductive xylem to test advantages and possible problems of commonly applied methods.
  • ? Infiltration removed nearly all gas from sections of drought-stressed and unstressed twigs, and flushing and infiltration efficiently removed emboli. Infiltration appears less prone to producing clogged xylem elements than high pressure flushing. Relative water loss (RWL) and the proportion of xylem stained with phloxine B (PSX) was also highly correlated with PLC, the latter can be quantified by image analysis, and also shows the pattern of xylem dysfunction. Loss of conductivity was more common in the inner annual rings, in early wood within an annual ring, and in compression wood, though pattern differed substantially between branches.
  • ? Advantages and potential problems of these methods are discussed and it is suggested that RWL or PSX may be used as proxy measures for PLC in species when the correlations have been established.
