β-1,3-Glucan at different dietary doses was administered to enhance the growth, immunity, and survival against nitrite stress in Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Four different diets supplemented with 0, 250, 500, or 1,000 mg of β-1,3-glucan kg−1 diets were fed to L. vannamei. Growth performance (weight gain and survival rate), physiological conditions (blood total protein, glucose, lactate, triacylglycerols, cholesterol levels) and immunological responses (superoxide dismutase, catalase, lysozyme, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase activities) of shrimp were recorded after 84-day feeding and 120 h after exposed to nitrite-N. After 84-day feeding, 250 mg kg−1 β-1,3-glucan diet resulted in better weight gain (P < 0.05). Before the nitrite stress, blood lactate, triacylglycerols, and cholesterol level in shrimp fed with 250 mg kg−1 β-1,3-glucan diet were significantly higher than those observed in shrimp fed with other diets (P < 0.05). Higher activities of catalase, lysozyme, and alkaline phosphatase were observed in shrimp fed with 500 or 1,000 mg kg−1 β-1,3-glucan diet as compared to those obtained in shrimp fed with other diets (P < 0.05). After 120-h nitrite stress, blood protein, lactate, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and alkaline phosphatase activities in shrimp fed with 500 or 1,000 mg kg−1 β-1,3-glucan were significantly higher than those observed in shrimp fed with other diets (P < 0.05). Glucose and triacylglycerol levels of shrimp fed with 500 or 1,000 mg kg−1 β-1,3-glucan were significantly lower than those observed in other diets (P < 0.05). In shrimp fed with 500 and 1,000 mg kg−1 β-1,3-glucan and 120-h after nitrite stress, the mortality was significantly lower than that observed in shrimp of control. Together, in this 84-day feeding trial, 250 mg kg−1 β-1,3-glucan improved growth, whereas 500 mg kg−1 β-1,3-glucan preferentially improved nitrite resistance, probably through accelerating energy metabolism and activating immune system.  相似文献

Gametophytes of Chondracanthus chamissoi are more abundant in the field than tetrasporophytes. This differential phase ratio is well known in the literature for other members of the Gigartinaceae and has been explained as the result of either stochastic events or differential reproductive or physiological capacities between the phases. The comparison of both phases of Chondracanthus chamissoi in their early stages of development under laboratory conditions were summarised. Despite the higher biomass of reproductive tetrasporophytes recorded in summer (the seasonal maxima), significantly more carpospores are released per gram than tetraspores. During the following processes of settlement and germination, tetraspores show higher average values mainly due to their persistence in time. These differences tend to disappear in winter when the capacity of spores to develop normally appears to be lower. On the other hand, sporophytic growth rates are higher than gametophytic growth rates for most conditions of day length, light intensity and temperature. With no other external factors considered, the higher abundance of gametophytes in the field appears to be a result of the higher capacities of tetraspores to settle and germinate after an extended period of time suspended in the water column.  相似文献

Growth of juvenile giant tiger prawn, Penaeus monodon Fabricius, was evaluated at an aquarium-scale in co-culture with a discarded filamentous seaweed, Chaetomorpha ligustica (Kützing) Kützing. Juveniles at different ages in days were examined, designated as J 16, J 44, J 58, J 93 and J 128, where a 1-day-old juvenile (J 1) is equivalent to a 20-day-old post-larva (PL 20)). Juveniles at every age group grazed directly on live C. ligustica, even those fed an artificial shrimp diet to satiation. Mean specific growth rate (SGR: % day−1) was higher in early age juveniles. Compared to mono-culture, significant differences in growth were observed at J 16 (4.44% day−1) and J 44 (1.60% day−1); however, no significant differences were recorded at J 58 (1.16% day−1), J 93 (0.75% day−1) or J 128 (0.45% day−1). It was concluded that co-culture of giant tiger prawn with C. ligustica has a dietary advantage, especially in early age juveniles.  相似文献

Abalone culture systems are characterised by high water exchange rates as abalone are sensitive to changes in water quality. To reduce the costs of pumping, serial reuse systems have been tested. As water pH can decline in these systems, this study determined the effect of raising pH through the addition of sodium hydroxide (NaOH?) on weight gain, length gain and feed conversion ratio of H. midae in a serial-use raceway. Dosing with NaOH? increased pH by 0.3, 0.27 and 0.21 units at positions 1, 2 and 3 of a serial-pass system, respectively. Weight gain (Wg) and length gain (Lg) were correlated with pH (Wg: F 1, 16 = 16.35, P = 0.0009, r 2 = 0.51; Lg: F 1, 16 = 16.16, P = 0.0009, r 2 = 0.50), and using pH, dissolved oxygen and free ammonia nitrogen as independent variables suggested that water pH was the best predictor for abalone growth.  相似文献

Cyanobacterial blooms exert negative impacts on fisheries and water management authorities. Recently, it has gained global attention, as elevated earth warming and environmental pollution are accelerating algal growth. Oreochromis niloticus (O. niloticus) is a worldwide and the most commonly cultured fish in Egypt. The biological interaction of the living organisms to the surrounding environment must continuously be assessed to predict future effects of the ongoing hazards on fish. The study was designed to examine the possible biological and biochemical response of O. niloticus exposed to different concentrations of microcystins crude extract (containing microcystin-LR). Three equal groups of O. niloticus were assigned for intraperitoneal injection of three different doses: 100, 200, and 400 μg m?1 dried aqueous microcystins extract, for 10 days. Clinical, condition factor (K) and hepatosomatic index (HIS) were estimated. Biochemical alterations were evaluated via lipid peroxidation, DNA fragmentation assay and electrophoretic analysis of fragmented DNA using agarose gel electrophoresis. The results showed that there were discernible behavioral and clinical alterations. Significant differences in K and HIS were observed between treatments. Also, significant elevations were observed in lipid peroxidation level and in the DNA fragmentation percentage in the exposed fish to the doses of 200 and 400 μg m?1 of microcystins crude extract. The current study addresses the possible toxic effects of microcystins crude extract to O. niloticus. The results cleared that microcystins crude extract (containing MC-LR) is toxic to O. niloticus in time- and dose-dependent manners.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Aqueous extract of the seaweed Turbinaria conoides was purified to obtain an oligofucan-enriched seaweed concentrate (OESC). Oligofucans isolated were characterized as two types with (→1)-fucose-(2,3-diSO3?)-(1→4)-fucose-(2-SO3?)-(1→3)-fucose-(2,3-diSO3?)-(1→4)-fucose-(2-SO3?, 3-OAc)-(4→) and (→1)-fucose-(3-SO3?)-(1→4)-fucose-(2-SO3?)-(1→4)-fucose-(3-SO3?)-(1→4)-fucose-(2-SO3?)-(4→) motifs. A 90-day accelerated shelf-life study (50°C) showed that OESC maintained its antioxidant properties (free radical scavenging, reducing, lipid peroxidation inhibition, and chelating activities) even after 30 days. In vitro COX-2 and 5-LOX inhibitory properties of OESC (67.2 and 95.2%, respectively) showed no significant variation even at the 30th day. OESC significantly mitigated the carrageenan-induced inflammation in rats at 0–2 h (59.7–70.3% inhibition), which were greater compared to the synthetic NSAID aspirin. The safety of OESC has been assessed by acute (14 days) and subchronic (90 days) oral toxicity studies, which showed no toxicity-related significant changes in renal or hepatic function, hematological indices, and serum biochemical parameters in the OESC-treated Wistar rats. No histopathological alterations were observed in the vital organs of rats treated with OESC. LD50 and sub-chronic no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) for this concentrate were found to be > 5,000 and 2,000?mg/kg BW, respectively. Hence, oligofucan-enriched seaweed concentrate is safe to consume without any adverse effects in the body.  相似文献

A nutrition trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary lipid levels and supplemental Ulva meal on growth performance, feed efficiency, nutrient utilization, and body composition of juvenile Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Four isonitrogenous (CP 40%) diets containing 0% and 5% Ulva meal were formulated to contain 10% (low-lipid; LL) and 20% (high-lipid; HL) crude lipid. Triplicate groups of fish (~10 g) were fed to apparent satiation three times daily for 16 weeks. Fish fed 5% Ulva meal showed an increased growth performance (P < 0.05) compared with fish fed non-Ulva supplemented diets, irrespective of dietary lipid level. In particular, the incorporation of Ulva meal improved specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and protein efficiency ratio (PER). Feeding fish 5% Ulva meal diets resulted in significantly lower carcass lipid content. The results indicate that 5% inclusion of Ulva meal at both dietary lipid levels improves growth performance, feed efficiency, nutrient utilization, and body composition of Nile tilapia.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine the influence of orally administered 3,3,5-triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) or 17--methyltestosterone (MT) on growth and body composition of the eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) during the glass stage.Elvers receiving 20 or 40 ppm of T3 in the food weighed significantly more (P < 0.05) than controls. However, after 61 days of treatment a dosage of 60 ppm was not efficacious.Terminal percentages of body protein were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in elvers that received 20 ppm or 40 ppm T3 in their diets, than in the control. Crude body fat content was higher (P < 0.05) in elvers receiving 20 ppm (29% fat) or 40 ppm (28% fat), than in the controls (26% fat). Compared to the control, diets containing T3 at 20 or 40 ppm increased the body glucose concentration.Glass eels fed a diet containing 1 or 10 ppm MT grew significantly more slowly (P < 0.05) than the controls.Total body protein content was higher (P < 0.05), but total body crude fat content was lower (P < 0.05) in elvers fed a diet with 1 or 10 ppm MT compared to the controls. Total body glucose concentration of elvers administered 10 ppm MT was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than that of the control groups.  相似文献

The effect of supplemented commercial diets with diethylstilbestrol (DES—15, 30 and 60 mg kg?1) and 17 β-estradiol (E2—30 and 60 mg kg?1), two chemicals commonly used in sex reversal procedure in fish, on survival and growth parameters of juvenile European catfish (Silurus glanis) was evaluated. During the two experiments, lasting 28 days each, fish were kept at temperature 25.2–26.5 °C, pH 7.4–9.3 and oxygen concentration 5.0–7.3 mg O2 dm?3. DES supplementation resulted in depressed growth rate of catfish. In experimental groups fed with E2, no negative effect on growth parameters was found. Both chemicals did not result in observed mortality. In all of the experimental DES groups, hepatosomatic index increased significantly, which suggests negative influence on physiological condition of catfish. DES supplementation significantly changed cytological factors of liver cells and caused hepatic alterations in parenchyma, such as vacuolization and blood congestion. Similarly, supplementation of E2 in food resulted in changes in cytological parameters of hepatocytes. However, E2 did not cause pathological changes within the liver tissue. Histological examination of the catfish gonads showed 19 and 38 % of sterile fish after treatment with 30 and 60 mg kg?1 of DES, respectively. The results suggest that DES served in food could be ineffective in hormonal feminization process of European catfish. No disturbances of sex differentiation process after E2 treatment were observed. However, slight feminization effect in the highest level of E2 treatment group was recorded.  相似文献

A marine fish oil, Marinol K (MO) and borage oil (BO) were used to formulate diets relatively rich in eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA; 20:5(n-3)] and -linolenic acid [GLA; 18:3(n-6)], respectively. The diets were fed to duplicate groups of juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) of initial weight 1.4 g for a period of 12 weeks. No differences were observed in final weights either between duplicate tanks or between dietary treatments. Mortalities in the MO-fed group were significantly greater than in the BO-fed group. In the MO-fed group, 7 out of 12 fish sampled for histological analysis showed a pronounced liver histopathology whereas only 1 of 12 fish sampled in the BO-fed group showed slight pathology. EPA levels were increased 2.2-fold and its elongation product, 22:5(n-3), was increased 1.8-fold while arachidonic acid [AA; 20:4(n-6)] was decreased by 30% in MO-fed fish compared to the initial carcass composition. GLA was increased 53-fold and its elongation product dihomo--linolenic acid [DHGLA; 20:3(n-6)] was increased 16-fold while AA was reduced by 90% in BO-fed fish compared to the initial carcass composition. The amount of triacylglycerol in liver of BO-fed fish was significantly greater than levels in MO-fed fish. The fatty acid compositions of individual phospholipids from liver showed marked differences between dietary treatments. Fish fed MO had significantly higher levels of the (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), 20:5(n-3), 22:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3), and also significantly more 20:4(n-6) compared to BO-fed fish which had significantly higher 18:2(n-6), 18:3(n-6), 20:2(n-6) and 20:3(n-6). The composition of liver phosphatidylinositol was particularly unusual in BO-fed fish having DHGLA as the major C20 PUFA which was 2.2-fold greater than AA and 3.9-fold greater than EPA. This study demonstrates that the carcass composition of turbot can be altered, by means of dietary lipids, to contain increased levels of EPA and DHGLA which would be of potential benefit in human as well as in fish nutrition. However, caution should be exercised when using very highly unsaturated oils relatively rich in EPA which may generate histopathological lesions in the fish.Abbreviations AA arachidonic acid - ANOVA analysis of variance - BHT butylated hydroxytoluene - BO borage oil - DHA docosahexaenoic acid - DHGLA dihomo--linolenic acid - EPA eicosapentaenoic acid - GLA -linolenic acid - HPTLC high performance thin-layer chromatography - MO Marinol K - PC phosphatidylcholine - PE phosphatidylethanolamine - PI phosphatidylinositol - PS phosphatidylserine - PUFA polyunsaturated fatty acid - TLC thin-layer chromatography  相似文献

This study aimed to compare the efficacy of dietary α-tocopherol with that of dl-α-tocopheryl acetate, both either alone or in combination with vitamin C (ascorbic acid), on the growth performance, survival, and stress resistance of angelfish, Pterophylum scalare, juveniles. Juveniles were fed ad libitum for four weeks with Artemia enriched with no vitamins (control), vitamin C (Tc), α-tocopherol (Tα), dl-α-tocopheryl acetate (T dl ), α-tocopherol and vitamin C (Tα+C), and dl-α-tocopheryl acetate and vitamin C (T dl+C). After four weeks, an osmotic stress test was performed using seawater (25 g/L) to evaluate juvenile’s resistance to stress. Whole-body glucose and cortisol were used as stress indicators. At the end of the feeding trial, growth performance and survival of the juveniles fed vitamin-enriched Artemia were significantly (< 0.05) higher than for the control fish. Best performance was recorded for the Tα+C group. Survival, however, was not significantly (P > 0.05) different between the vitamin-fed groups. Osmotic stress significantly elevated the stress indicators, whole-body cortisol and glucose levels (P < 0.05), highest and lowest values being observed in control and Tα+C groups, respectively. Survival after osmotic stress of juveniles fed the Tα+c diet was significantly higher (by 46.2%, P < 0.001) than for controls. Results suggested that α-tocopherol has greater efficacy than dl-α-tocopheryl acetate and enriching Artemia with α-tocopherol and vitamin C together improves growth performance, survival, and stress resistance of angelfish juveniles.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of supplementary feeds with different crude protein (CP) levels on the growth and economic performances of sex-reversed Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) reared in a rain-fed rice–fish ecosystem for a period of 120 days. There were four treatments—namely, traditional feed (21% CP), formulated feed (26% CP), commercial feed (30% CP), and control (no feed was used)—with three replicates per treatment. Fish (30.04 g) were stocked in ditches at a rate of 0.5 fish m?2 considering the total area and fed one of the tested feeds twice daily at the rate of 2%–5% of body weight. Water-quality parameters of the ditches were monitored fortnightly, and these parameters were found suitable for fish farming. Organic matter, total nitrogen, and available phosphorous in soil were increased significantly (P < 0.05) in the feed treatments after fish cultivation. Highly significant weight gain and SGR were observed with fish fed the commercial feed as compared with other treatments. The highest benefit-cost ratio (2.15) was found in the control, followed by formulated feed (1.90), but in the case of numerical net return, it was the opposite. However, commercial feed showed the lowest benefit-cost ratio (1.67) due to higher feed cost than other supplementary feeds. Therefore, this study suggests that fish fed with a formulated feed (26% CP) produced significantly higher net economic return in the rice–fish farming system.  相似文献

The medaka Oryzias latipes is a teleost fish with an XX/XY sex determination system similar to that of mammals. However, under high-temperature conditions, XX medaka are masculinized by an elevation of the key teleost glucocorticoid, cortisol. Cortisol inhibits female-type proliferation of germ cells and induces masculinization of XX medaka during gonadal sex differentiation. To identify masculinization mechanisms downstream of cortisol, we analysed the functions of gonadal soma-derived growth factor (gsdf) and anti-Müllerian hormone receptor type 2 (amhr2); these genes are known to play important roles in the inhibition of germ cell proliferation and male differentiation. We investigated the impact of gsdf and amhr2 on the proliferation of germ cells using gsdf knockout (KO) and amhr2 KO medaka. At hatching stage, loss of gsdf or amhr2 function recovered female-type proliferation in germ cells under cortisol treatment. Moreover, cortisol treatment of gsdf KO or amhr2 KO medaka did not induce masculinization of XX medaka. These results suggest that cortisol inhibits female-type proliferation of germ cells and induces masculinization of XX medaka through GSDF and AMHR2. This study thereby provides the first evidence that GSDF and AMHR2 are involved in cortisol-induced masculinization.

Temporal changes in growth, plasma thyroid hormone, cortisol, growth hormone (GH) and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations, hepatic T3 content and hepatic 5-monodeiodinase activity were measured in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) subjected to a sustained fast for up to eight weeks, and during a four-week re-feeding period. The purpose of the study was to examine aspects of the endocrine control of energy partitioning processes characteristic of short-term (acute; fasting) and long-term (chronic; starvation) food-deprivation states in fish, and to explore the role of the thyroid hormones, cortisol and GH in the energy repartitioning that takes place during an acute anabolic (re-feeding) state following chronic food deprivation.Differences in growth rate between fed and fasted groups were evident after two weeks, but significant weight loss by the fasted groups was not evident until between four and six weeks into the fast. Hepatosomatic indices (HSIs) were significantly reduced in the fasted fish within seven days, and as early as two days in one study; recovery of the HSI in fasted fish was evident within three days of re-feeding. Liver protein content (expressed as % wet weight) was consistently depressed in the fasted fish in only one of the three studies. Liver total lipid content (expressed as % wet weight) was depressed in the fasted fish within two days of food deprivation. Because of the rapid and sustained decrease in the HSI of fasted fish, the hepatic total protein and lipid reserves, when considered on a body weight basis, were markedly lowered within the first few days of the fast. Plasma GH concentrations exhibited a bi-modal pattern of change, with a transient fall in levels, followed by a sustained increase in fasted fish. The indicators of interrenal activity were suggestive of a depressed pituitary-interrenal axis in fasted animals; plasma cortisol levels were elevated to levels of fed animals within one day of re-feeding. The indicators of thyroid hormone economy (plasma thyroid hormone levels, liver triiodothyronine content, hepatic 5-monodeiodinase (MD) activity, thyroid epithelial cell height) were similarly indicative of a depressed pituitary-thyroid axis in fasted animals, with recovery to levels of the fed animals within one week. Despite the compensatory changes in accumulation of reserves (as indicated by a compensatory increase in HSI), there were no apparent compensatory changes in any of the endocrine parameters evident during the re-feeding period.  相似文献

The aim of present study was to evaluate the effects of dietary Immunogen® supplementation on juvenile rainbow trout, where 120 fish (81.7 ± 2.23 g) were fed diets supplemented with either 0.0 (control) or 2 g Immunogen® kg?1 for 7 weeks. The fish fed the Immunogen®-supplemented diet showed an improvement in growth performance, feed utilization, and protein efficiency ratio and a decrease in feed conversion ratio. The fish fed the Immunogen®-supplemented diet showed higher body protein content. There were no significant differences in red blood cell count, eosinophil, or lymphocyte between the treatments. However, white blood cells, neutrophil, and monocyte were higher in the fish fed fish with the Immunogen®-supplemented diet. Supplementation of Immunogen® has increased villi height and tunica muscularis thickness as well as gut protease and lipase activities. The present study revealed that supplementation of Immunogen® can improve intestinal morphology and increase digestive enzyme activity and consequently increase trout growth and feed efficiency.  相似文献

An 8-week growth study was conducted to determine the effect of ration level, energy, and protein maintenance requirement of catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis–Bloch, fingerling (7.90 ± 0.55 cm; 3.10 ± 0.28 g) by feeding casein–gelatin-based purified diet (40% CP; 3.61 kcal g-1 GE) at six ration levels 1–6% of BW/day, at 0800 and 1700 h, in triplicate, with 20 fish per trough fitted with water flow-through system of volume 55 L. Maximum live weight gain, best feed conversion ratio (FCR), best specific growth rate (SGR), and highest protein efficiency ratio (PER) were evident for ration levels of 4–5% body weight. However, second-degree polynomial regression analysis for weight gain, FCR, PER, protein, and energy retention data indicated that the break-points occurred at 5.08, 4.18, 4.05, 4.16, and 4.17% BW/day, respectively. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher body protein content was recorded at 4 and 5% rations. While a linear increase in body fat content with inverse relationship in moisture content was evident with increasing rations. Ash content remained insignificantly (P > 0.05) low at higher rations. Protein and energy retention values also produced significant (P < 0.05) differences. Based on the results obtained, it is recommended that feeding in the range of 4 to 4.5% BW/day, corresponding to 1.60–1.80 g protein and 14.46–16.27 kcal energy g100 g−1 of the diet/day is optimum for the growth and efficient feed utilization of H. fossilis, while 2–3% ration levels (0.80–1.20 g protein and 7.23–10.84 kcal energy) suggest that these amounts approximate to the maintenance requirement of this fish.  相似文献
