Herd health records from 1983 to 1985 were analysed for a sample of 19 dairy farms on the Atherton Tableland in tropical north Queensland. Abortion and first service conception rates were calculated for each farm for each year. The association between abortion rate and stage of gestation at pregnancy diagnosis was investigated as well as the association between abortion rate and lactation status. There was a significant linear increase in abortion rate over the 3-year period, during which the mean rate was 7.3 +/- 2.1% (range 4.5% to 10.9%). There was also a significant variation in first conception rates during the same period, when the mean first service conception rate was 51.8% +/- 6.6% (range 42.4% to 65.8%). A significantly higher abortion rate was recorded in first lactation cows. Of 178 abortions in all lactation groups (1984), 20.3% were repeat abortions by the same cows. Of 163 abortions, a majority (80.4%) occurred during months 3 to 7 of gestation. No significant association was found between the timing of pregnancy diagnosis and occurrence of abortion.  相似文献

To provide more evidence for an apparent association between immature, high protein pasture diets and abortion in dairy cows on the Atherton Tableland in tropical north Queensland, pastures and cows on 4 farms were sampled on 5 occasions during a 7-month period. Pasture samples were analysed for dry matter (DM), protein, nitrate and fibre content. Plasma progesterone concentrations were determined in 18 to 20 pregnant cows. Fifty-four pasture samples (38 grass and 16 legume) were analysed and the distribution for 3 DM ranges was: 10% to 14.9% - 20 samples, 15% to 19.9% - 27 samples and 20% to 24.9% - 7 samples, while the distribution for 4 protein ranges was: 15% to 19% - 5 samples, 20% to 24% - 20 samples, 25% to 29% - 21 samples and 30% to 34% - 8 samples. Both pasture protein and DM content fluctuated with time. Pasture nitrate was low and insignificant while fibre (cell wall) levels appeared to be satisfactory for ruminant nutrition. Significant differences occurred between the mean plasma progesterone levels on 3 of the 4 farms. Raised levels in pregnant cows suggested the possibility of increased progesterone production in response to a previous low progesterone crisis or, alternatively, a decreased metabolic clearance rate of progesterone in pregnant cows on a declining plane of nutrition towards the end of the summer wet season. Supplementation of a ryegrass/white clover pasture diet with pasture silage is a common management practice in New Zealand dairy herds. The effect of this supplementation on reproductive performance has not been investigated. Five herds of 20 cows were formed before calving commenced on 1 June 1992. From 5 August to 4 September, two of these herds were fed 5 kg/cow/day of pasture silage in addition to the ryegrass/white clover pasture offered to all herds. Pasture silage supplementation did not alter the intervals from calving to first ovulation, first oestrus, or to conception. However, it reduced the first service conception rate (37.5% v. 53.3%; difference +/- sed = 15.8 +/- 10.0%, for pasture and silage and pasture only cows, respectively). A positive effect on reproductive performance of pasture silage supplementation was not demonstrated in this trial.  相似文献

A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was performed on dairy herds in Flanders (Belgium) to detect management factors that are associated with an increased gastrointestinal parasite infection level of adult dairy cows. At the end of the grazing season, information concerning general herd factors, pasture management and anthelmintic treatment strategy was obtained from 956 herds. A bulk tank milk sample was obtained from 779 out of the 956 herds and the antibody levels (ODR) against Ostertagia ostertagi were determined. The associations between ODR and herd management factors were studied by two linear regression models. The first model evaluated the effect of general herd factors and the level of the cows' exposure to pasture. Large sized herds had significantly lower ODRs as compared to medium (P=0.001) or small sized herds (P=0.03). Herds with only dairy cows had lower ODRs than herds with both dairy and beef cows (P=0.02). An increased exposure to pasture of the cows was associated with higher ODRs (P<0.001). The second model was built to evaluate the effect of pasture management factors and anthelmintic treatment strategy. Later turn-out on pasture (P<0.001) and mowing (P=0.002) were both significantly associated with lower ODRs. Cows that had a restricted grazing time per day tended to have lower ODR than cows that grazed 24 h per day (P=0.07). An increased exposure to pasture of the heifers was significantly associated with higher ODRs (P=0.001). No associations were found between ODR and calf related management factors, anthelmintic treatment strategy, time of turn-in, rotational grazing type or stocking rate. Later turn-out on pasture, mowing and restricting the grazing time per day are factors that can be applied immediately on dairy farms to reduce economical losses due to gastrointestinal nematodes.  相似文献

In each of two experiments, 120 pregnant beef cows were stratified by body condition score, BW, breed, and age, randomly divided into six groups of 20, and assigned to one of six 5.1-ha bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.) pastures (two replicates/ treatment) in early January to evaluate the use of winter-annual pasture as a supplement. All cows in Exp. 1 and 2 had ad libitum access to bermudagrass/dallisgrass (Paspalum dilatatum Poir.) hay plus three treatments: 1) a concentrate-based supplement fed 3 d/wk, 2) limit grazing on winter-annual pasture 2 d/wk (7 hr/ d; 0.04 ha x cow(-1) x grazing d(-1)), or 3) limit grazing on winter-annual pasture 3 d/wk (7 hr/d; 0.04 ha x cow(-1) x grazing d(-1)) sod-seeded into a portion of the pasture until mid-May. The seeded portion of pastures in Exp. 1 was planted with a mixture of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rye (Secale cereale L.), but annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) was added to the seed mixture in Exp. 2. In mid-May, cows were blocked by treatment and the previous sorting factors, randomly assigned to six new groups of 20, and placed on the six perennial pastures until calves were weaned. Groups of cows were exposed to a bull for 60 d beginning in mid-May. In Exp. 1 and 2, limit-grazing winter-annual pasture compared to the concentrate-based supplement or limit grazing 2 vs 3 d/wk did not affect (P > 0.15) cow BW. In Exp. 1, cows limit grazed on winter-annual pasture had a lower (P = 0.05) body condition score than cows fed the concentrate-based supplement in the early spring. However, in Exp. 2, cows limit grazed on winter-annual pasture had higher (P < or = 0.07) body condition score than cows fed the concentrate-based supplement. The conception rate of cows in Exp. 1 and 2 did not differ (P > 0.22) between cows fed concentrate-based supplements and cows limit grazed on winter-annual pasture. In Exp. 2, cows limit grazed 2 d/wk tended to have a greater (P = 0.10) conception rate than cows limit grazed 3 d/wk. In Exp. 1 and 2, birth weight, total gain, BW, and ADG of calves were not affected (P > 0.15) by treatment. We conclude that wheat and rye pasture is a marginal supplement for lactating beef cows. However, cows limit grazed 2 d/wk on winter-annual pasture of wheat, rye, and annual ryegrass as a supplement maintained BW and body condition score as well as cows fed the concentrate-based supplement. But, grazing pasture 3 vs 2 d/wk did not seem to affect performance of cows.  相似文献

Serum inorganic phosphorus (Pi) concentration of 20 cows in each of ten factory supply dairy herds was assessed at monthly or two-monthly intervals during the 198243 lactation. Pasture on offer was ranked low, medium or high and the phosphorus (P) content assessed monthly on all farms from the two paddocks to be grazed next in the rotation. The mean serum Pi concentration was high (1.98 mmol/l) prior to calving but fell to low levels at peak lactation (1.28 mmol/l) and again during the drought (1.28-1.38 mmol/l) in January, February and March. Individual cows had Pi levels as low as 0.32 mmol/l. Herds on Northern Yellow-brown Earths had higher Pi levels than herds predominantly on Brown Granular Loams (P<0.01). There were differences between cows within herds (P<0.01) and Pi levels declined with cow age (P<0.01). Pasture P content was above minimum requirements for lactating cows (0.33% DM; with ad lib. feeding) from July through October but below requirements in most pastures from December through April, when pasture availability also limited production. The P content in pasture was unrelated to either its grass or legume content, but was higher in pastures given a medium or high DM ranking (P<0.05). The possibility of increasing dairy production with P supplementation in spring is discussed.  相似文献

In a study of dairy and beef herds on 120 farms in south-western Victoria, losses attributed to grass tetany were shown to have been an important cause of economic loss during the cooler months of 1980. Thin dairy cows had a higher incidence of suspected grass tetany than dairy cows in moderate body condition, and both thin and fat beef cows had a higher incidence than beef cows in moderate body condition. A lower incidence was found among dairy cows when the available pasture or hay contained a high percentage of clover, when cows in moderate body condition had been grazed on pastures topdressed with low rates of potassium fertilisers, and when cows had been rotated onto fresh pasture at least daily rather than at 2 or 3 day intervals. The incidence among dairy cows was also associated with the length of available pasture, the correlation being positive for cows of moderate body condition, but negative for thin cows. Possible reasons for the associations are discussed. Only a small proportion of farmers adopted measures to prevent grass tetany, and those who did often applied them inefficiently. Practicable control measures are suggested on the basis of the survey results.  相似文献

A study was conducted to assess the reproductive performance and factors that influence reproductive efficiency of cows in smallholder dairy farms in Selalle, Central Ethiopia. Three hundred dairy farms (average herd size = 8) were visited and data on reproductive, breeding and management histories were collected and analysed. The overall geometric means for calving to conception interval (n = 382) and duration after last calving (n = 422) were 187 and 201 days in pregnant and non-pregnant cows, respectively. The least-squares mean calving to conception interval was higher (p < 0.05) in mixed crop–livestock production (MCLP) than in small urban dairy production (SUDP) systems and was lower (p < 0.01) in non-suckling than in suckling cows. District significantly influenced (p < 0.01) the least-squares mean duration after last calving and, among the districts, non-pregnant cows in Wuchale-Jida had the highest values, whereas cows in Sululta and Mulo had the lowest values. The overall average number of services per conception (±SD) and the first service conception rate were 1.6 ± 1.0 (n = 382) and 56% (n = 456), respectively. The prevalences of abortion, dystocia (assisted parturition), retained fetal membrane, vulval discharge/endometritis and pre-weaning calf mortality were 1.4%, 1.3%, 5.4%, 2.8% and 17.4%, respectively. The present estimates of extended calving to conception interval and duration after last calving indicate poor reproductive performances of cows in Selalle smallholder dairy farms. The pre-weaning calf mortality rate is highly significant. Accordingly, a further detailed investigation is necessary to identify and quantify the specific reproductive disorders and associated interacting factors attributing to such poor performance and to determine the causes and predisposing factors behind such high calf mortality.  相似文献

为了调查宁夏吴忠地区奶牛场因传染性因素造成流产的基本情况,应用酶联免疫吸附试验(ELISA)对可能造成感染流产的牛传染性鼻气管炎病毒、新孢子虫、牛病毒性腹泻病毒的抗体及布鲁菌的抗原进行了血清学检测。结果显示,牛传染性鼻气管炎病毒抗体阳性率为48.84%,新孢子虫抗体阳性率为30.23%,牛病毒性腹泻病毒抗体阳性率为19.77%,布鲁菌抗原阳性率为24.42%。牛场阳性率高达100%。根据统计显示,不同妊娠胎次的奶牛流产率差异显著(P0.05),其中第1胎流产率与其他胎次间差异极显著(P0.01)。不同妊娠时间的奶牛流产率差异不显著(P0.05)。调查表明,宁夏部分奶牛场存在不同程度的牛传染性鼻气管炎病毒、新孢子虫、牛病毒性腹泻病毒和布鲁菌感染。  相似文献

本试验选用276头高产中国荷斯坦牛为研究对象,其中120头初产奶牛和156头经产奶牛均表现为分娩期异常或产后期异常,如难产、胎衣不下、双胎难产、早产或子宫感染。试验牛被分为处理组与对照组。处理组在产后20d间隔811连续两次皮下注射氯前列烯醇(0.4mg/次),对照组注射4.0mL灭菌生理盐水。然后观察其首次发情的时间、适合第一次人工授精的时间、首次授精妊娠率、150d妊娠率、产后的空怀天数、重复配种奶牛的比例和每头牛的授精次数。结果表明,产后应用前列腺素对产后首次发情的时间和产后首次人工授精的时间没有影响,但处理组奶牛首次人工授精的妊娠率明显升高,这在头胎牛更为明显;产后应用氯前列烯醇可明显减少平均授精次数、缩短产后空怀时间、增加产后150d泌乳奶牛的妊娠率、降低产犊后重复配种率。  相似文献

AIMS: To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment programmes that included controlled internal drug-releasing (CIDR) devices containing progesterone (P4) in improving synchrony of oestrus, and conception and pregnancy rates in cycling, anoestrous and inseminated dairy cows, using meta-analysis. To describe the difference in response between cycling and anoestrous cows to CIDR-based synchrony programmes. METHODS: Scientific papers written in the English language between 1989 and 2002 that investigated the effects of treatment programmes including CIDR devices on reproductive performance in dairy heifers or lactating dairy cows were identified using a computerised literature search. The criteria for inclusion incorporated evidence that treatment allocation was completely randomised; the population studied was lactating dairy cows; and that data were available on submission, conception and pregnancy rates and their associated measures of variability. Reproductive outcomes from 25 synchrony trials (total n=11,058 cows) were analysed. Summary measures of the effect of treatment on reproductive outcome were assessed using fixed- and random-effects Bayesian meta-analysis models. RESULTS: Treatment programmes including a CIDR device increased the risk of submission in cycling cows (predicted Bayesian RR=2.86, 95% credible interval=1.46-5.67). Compared with controls, synchrony programmes including CIDR devices in cycling dairy cows had no effect on the risk of conception to first service post-treatment (predicted Bayesian RR=1.00, 95% credible interval=0.80-1.24). Compared with controls, synchrony programmes including CIDR devices had no effect on the risk of pregnancy throughout the mating period (predicted Bayesian RR=1.02, 95% credible interval=0.89-1.17). In anoestrous cows, CIDR treatment had no effect on the risk of conception to first service post-treatment and no effect on the risk of pregnancy throughout the mating period, compared with anoestrous, untreated controls (predicted Bayesian RR=0.91 and 0.97, respectively; 95% credible interval=0.68-1.26 and 0.59-1.60, respectively). CONCLUSION: The results of this meta-analysis showed that synchrony programmes using CIDR devices combined with other hormones reliably enhanced submission rates in lactating dairy cows. The relatively small number of trials with data suitable for analysis and the heterogeneity of results at the individual trial level limited our ability to confirm either a beneficial or deleterious effect of treatment on conception or pregnancy rates. Further randomised, controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of this form of reproductive therapy in commercial dairy farms are needed.  相似文献

CONCLUSION: The results of this meta-analysis showed that synchrony programmes using CIDR devices combined with other hormones reliably enhanced submission rates in lactat- ing dairy cows. The relatively small number of trials with data suitable for analysis and the heterogeneity of results at the indi- vidual trial level limited our ability to confirm either a beneficial or deleterious effect of treatment on conception or pregnancy rates. In this study, the effect of increasing the proportion of concentrate in the diet, on efficiency of feed utilisation, was determined when Holstein–Friesian cows grazed short-rotation ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) or kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum) pastures. The concentrates were energy-dense dairy pellets fed twice-a-day at milking and the roughage component was lucerne hay and the pasture.When cows grazed ryegrass, there was no effect on animal performance as the proportion of concentrate in the diet increased from 0.23 to 0.35 (4.75 to 7.50 kg concentrate/cow/day). The substitution rate of concentrates for pasture for the first 1.57 kg concentrate/cow/day fed was 0.58 but rose to 1.18 for the next 1.28 kg concentrate/cow/day.When cows grazed kikuyu, there was also no effect of increasing the proportion of concentrate in the diet on total dry matter intake (DMI) or milk production. However, there was a substantial increase in the in vivo digestibility of whole diet, pasture and acid detergent fibre (ADF) was observed when the proportion of concentrate in the diet increased from 0.08 to 0.25. However, there was a marked decline in pasture digestibility (72% to 64%), and more so in ADF digestibility (61.3% to 48.4%), as the proportion of concentrate in the diet increased further to 0.29 (5.52 kg/cow/day). The intake of kikuyu, when determined by difference between pre- and post-grazing pasture mass, was substantially underestimated compared to the use of the n-alkane technique, and this discrepancy increased as the pasture on offer increased.On both pasture types, the neutral detergent fibre intake, as a % of bodyweight varying from 1.6% to 2.2% for kikuyu and 1.5% to 1.6% for ryegrass was far above the values claimed of 1.2% to restrict intake.The results of this study highlight the limits to the amount of concentrate that can be fed on a typical Australian dairy farm where concentrates can only be fed twice-a-day at milking. The results also provide a more appropriate benchmark for fibre limitation in the ration when cows graze pasture, particularly poorer quality tropical grasses, and this value is well above that found in more intense feeding situations.  相似文献

The records kept by 4 artificial breeding centres in south western Victoria were examined and analysed by multiple regression analysis to determine whether daily fluctuations in the number of dairy cows presented for insemination, and daily, monthly and annual fluctuations in the result of first service, were associated with either climatic conditions or nutritional factors assessed as the availability of conserved hay and oats as feed supplements in the district. Over a 122 day observation period from July to October 1974, the number of cows presented daily for insemination was negatively correlated with daily rainfall total (p less than 0.01), wind speed (p less than 0.001) and barometric pressure (p less than 0.05). When the mean value for barometric pressure was used in the regression equation, rainfall totals and wind speeds above zero were associated with a mean reduction of 13.8% in the number of cows presented daily for insemination. The daily percentages of cows not resubmitted for service within 60 days of first service (non-return rates) were unrelated to climatic conditions and to the number of cows presented for insemination. The monthly non-return rate had a negative correlation (p less than 0.001) with the cost of oats but was not related to corresponding climatic changes. Annual non-return rate fluctuations were negatively correlated with the cost of oats (p less than 0.001) and with the July to October rainfall total (p less than 0.01). It is suggested that the correlation of non-return rate with the July to October total rainfall was due to an effect of rainfall total on the nutritional value of the pasture.  相似文献

The interval from calving to conception is unnecessarily long in dairy cows. Post partum administration of prostaglandin F2 alpha can reduce the calving to conception interval, but it is not known whether this is due to advanced return to oestrus, increased oestrus intensity and/or increased pregnancy rates. In two experiments, the treatment of dairy cows with prostaglandin F2 alpha 21 days post partum reduced the interval to first oestrus and first service by about 10 days. The intensity of oestrus was not affected. Pregnancy rates to first service were increased from (on average) 60 to 80%, and the number of services/conception was reduced from 2.0 to 1.3.  相似文献

Mean serum inorganic phosphorus concentrations of cows in an infertile dairy herd of 170 cows in the Hunter Valley increased from less than 4.5 mg/100 ml to greater than 5.8 mg/100 ml after defluorinated superphosphate was added to their drinking water at the rate of 2.5 kg/450 1 once weekly from September, 1976. The first service pregnancy rate increased from 36.5% to 63.2%, the mean calving to conception interval decreased from 109 days to 85 days and the number of cows culled each year for infertility fell from 15 to 5. The pasture fed to the milking cows contained on average greater than 17% crude protein, greater than or equal to 0.39% phosphorus, greater than or equal to 9 ppm copper and 38--46 ppm manganese according to the dominant species. The Ca/P ratio ranged from 2 to 5.5:1. Of these, only the Ca/P ratio and the manganese concentrations appeared to be abnormal.  相似文献

Dairy cows on 3 New South Wales dairy farms with herd mean blood glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities of less than 70 U/g haemoglobin, showed a significant improvement in first service conception rates following treatment with oral selenium pellets. Treated cows had significantly higher blood GSH-Px activities compared with control cows, with a lag phase of 4 to 5 months to reach peak mean levels of 88 to 159 U/g haemoglobin.  相似文献

The relationships between the calving to first service interval and several measures of reproductive performance were evaluated in 1738 lactation records from cows in 32 southern Ontario Holstein herds. Lactation records were divided into three mutually exclusive health categories based on the cows' postpartal disease histories.

Relationships between the calving to first service interval and the first service conception rate, number of services per conception and open interval were similar for all three health categories. The first service conception rate was lower and the average number of services per conception higher in cows first bred before 60 days when compared to cows first bred after 60 days. The relationship between the calving to first service interval and the open interval indicated that for each day that breeding was delayed the open interval was extended by 0.86 days.

It appeared that overall conception rates may be lower for cows first bred very early or very late, but differences in the overall conception rate were only significant for cows experiencing a reproductive tract infection. Unless very expensive semen is being used, it is suggested that disease free cows be bred at the first heat occurring after 40 days postpartum, and that cows experiencing postpartal disease be bred at the first heat occurring after 60 days postpartum.

A serological survey for antibodies against Neospora caninum in aborting cattle was carried out in the Czech Republic. Serum samples from 463 aborting dairy cows originated from 137 farms from different parts of the Czech Republic were tested for presence of N. caninum antibodies by use of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Antibodies (> or = 1:640) to N. caninum were found in 18 (3.9%) of 463 aborting cows. Farm prevalence in aborting cows was 12.4% (17/137). The antibody titres of cows were 1:200 (9 cows), 1:640 (7 cows), 1:1280 (3 cows), 1:2560 (3 cows), 1:5120 (3 cows), 1:10,240 (2 cows) and 1:20,480 (0 cow). A case-control study was conducted to estimate the association of N. caninum infection and abortion. For this 407 serum samples were collected from cows on five dairy farms with repeated occurrence of endemic and sporadic abortion of unidentified etiology. These samples were obtained from aborting cattle (n=44) and normally calving cattle (control group; n=363) and tested for N. caninum antibodies by an immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Overall, 3.19% (13/407) of cows sampled had positive N. caninum fluorescence with a cut-off titre of 1:200. The prevalence of N. caninum was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the aborting group (13.64%; 95% confidence interval (CI): 5.2, 27.4) than in the control group (1.93%; 95% CI: 0.8, 3.9). A strong association between seropositivity and abortion was found, with seropositive cows being eight times more likely to abort than seronegative cows (odds ratio=8; 95% CI: 2.6, 25.1). This first report on the serological prevalence of N. caninum in cows in the Czech Republic verified a strong association between N. caninum infection and abortions in five dairy farms. A retrospective cohort study design was used to investigate the effect of lameness on reproductive performance on 13 commercial Dutch dairy farms. The data were collected during a routine herd health and production control program.

The cumulative 100-DIM (days in milkl) production in the previous lactation of lame cows was higher and the culling rate lower than that of the controls. The 100- and 270-DIM production of the cows with a sole ulcer was higher than that of the control cows. There was no difference in 100- and 270-DIM production between cows with a lameness diagnosis other than sole ulcer and the controls.

Lameness prolonged the interval from calving to first service and the interval from first service to conception. The pregnancy rate at first service was not affected by lameness.  相似文献
