A case-control study of pseudorabies virus (PRV) infection in Illinois swine herds was conducted to identity risk factors associated with PRV infection. Factors identified as being associated with increased risk of PRV infection included percentage of herd in total confinement (adjusted OR (aOR)=19.7, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.3–117.2) and having two or more PRV positive herds in the township (aOR=3.2, 95% CI: 1.0–10.2). A protective factor identified in the study included using one's own vehicle to transport pigs to market rather than hiring truckers (aOR=0.2, 95% CI: 0.07–0.6). A protective factor for producers who used their own vehicle for transporting pigs was cleaning the truck after off-site trips (aOR=0.09, 95% CI: 0.03–0.2). Management factors which can be most easily altered by producers who wish to prevent PRV infection in their herd include purchasing one's own vehicle for transport of pigs, and cleaning out this vehicle carefully after off-site visits. Total confinement herds and herds in areas where PRV is endemic appear to be at higher risk of becoming infected with PRV, and managers should be especially aware of herd security measures.  相似文献

Infection and colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are now increasingly being reported in animals and people who work with animals, including horses and horse personnel. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of MRSA colonization in veterinary personnel attending an international equine veterinary conference, and to identify risk factors for MRSA colonization in this group. Volunteers were recruited at the conference to provide a single nasal swab and complete a questionnaire regarding contact with the human health care system, contact with horses, and personal hand hygiene. Colonization with MRSA was found in 26/257 (10.1%) of study participants. Multivariable analysis showed an increased risk of MRSA colonization associated with having been diagnosed with or having treated a patient diagnosed with MRSA colonization or infection in the last year (odds ratio [OR] 8.41, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.51–49.92, P = 0.015; OR 3.27, 95% CI 1.05–10.11, P = 0.039, respectively), whereas hand washing between infectious cases (OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.11–0.72, P = 0.009) and hand washing between farms (OR 0.35, 95% CI 0.14–0.98, P = 0.047) were protective. The prevalence of MRSA colonization among equine veterinary personnel found in this study was high compared to that of other studies of the general population. These data support previous suggestions that equine veterinary personnel are at increased risk of colonization with MRSA. This is the first study to demonstrate a statistically significant association between hand hygiene practices and a measurable clinical outcome in veterinary medicine.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Colic is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in horses. In Sweden, an insurance database with diagnostic medical information is maintained on >30% of the nation's horse population. HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to describe the occurrence of colic, defined by costly veterinary care and life claims, in horses at 1 insurance company during 1997-2002. HORSES: All horses (<21 years of age) with complete insurance for veterinary care and life during the period 1997-2002 were included. METHODS: Colic was defined as conditions where the main clinical sign was abdominal pain and the problem was related to the gastrointestinal system. The analyses included measures of incidence by sex, breed group, age categories, geographical location (urban/other), survival to and survival after colic, medical cost for colic, and multivariable modeling of risk factors related to the event of colic. RESULTS: In all, 116,288 horses contributed to 341,564 horse years at risk (HYAR). There were 3,100 horses with a colic diagnosis, of which 27% were settled for life insurance. The median gross cost for veterinary care was 4,729 Swedish Kronor (SEK). The overall occurrence and mortality rate of colic was 91 and 24 events per 10,000 HYAR. Survival after colic at 1 month was 76% (95% confidence interval: 75-78%). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: The occurrence of colic varied with breed group, age, and season. The mortality rates probably reflected the true mortality of colic. The veterinary care rates most likely underestimated of the risk colic because they represent relatively costly events.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the national incidence of, operation-level risk factors for, and annual economic impact of colic among horses in the United States during 1998 and 1999. DESIGN: Epidemiologic survey. ANIMALS: 21,820 horses on 1,026 horse operations in 28 states. PROCEDURES: Horses were monitored for colic for 1 year, and results were recorded in a log that was collected quarterly. Operation-level data were collected via 4 on-site personal interviews. Associations between colic and independent variables adjusted for size of operation were determined. RESULTS: Annual national incidence of colic in the US horse population was estimated to be 4.2 colic events/100 horses per year. Case fatality rate was 11%, and 1.4% of colic events resulted in surgery. Annual cost of colic in the United States was estimated to be $115,300,000. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The national impact of equine colic is substantial because of the high case fatality rate.  相似文献

With the hypothesis that police horses with abnormal cortisol circadian rhythm (CCR) had more chance to develop colic, the aim of this study was to determine the CCR ratio in horses subjected to different housing and work conditions and to associate abnormal CCR ratio with incidence of colic. A total of 116 police horses belonging to four different groups were studied. In all, 31 were full-time stabled and performed urban patrolling activity, 27 were full-time stabled and performed equine therapy and sports activities, 25 were part-time stabled and performed urban patrolling, and 33 animals were kept full-time on pasture and did not perform any kind of work activity. Venous blood samples were collected between 6 and 7 am and also 8 hours later, and cortisol concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay to calculate the CCR ratio. Annual colic incidences (6 months before and after the day on which CCR ratio was determined) were assessed by examining individual medical files. The overall incidence of abnormal CCR ratio (<0.30) was 63.3%, and 107 cases of colic were reported for this population with a mean incidence of 0.92 colic/horse/yr. Horses with abnormal CCR had 2.3 times more chance to have colic (95% CI: 1.07 to 5.28, P = .03) when compared with those with normal CCR. In conclusion, high incidence of abnormal CCR ratio indicates that police horses were under stressful conditions. Horses with abnormal CCR ratios were more prone to suffer colic episodes, indicating that CCR ratio determination could perhaps be useful in detecting horses at risk of colic.  相似文献

A prospective study was designed to document the frequencies of equine health problems in the state of Michigan, USA. A total of 2469 horses from a random sample of 138 equine operations were monitored in the study in two 12-month periods: 1992–1993 and 1993–1994. All the major breeds of horses in the state were proportionately represented in the sample. Using weighted annual incidence densities as measures of disease frequencies, the 10 most frequently observed groups of health problems were (from most to least frequent) leg lameness, dermatological problems, respiratory problems, hoof and foot problems, reproductive problems, systemic problems, colic, whole body lameness, neurological problems and gastrointestinal problems (other than colic). This ranking of the top 10 health problems was different from the ranking provided by equine owners/operators at the beginning of the study.

Overall, very low specific mortality rates were observed in the study. However, the conditions that were associated with mortality resulted in fairly high case fatalities. The five specific illnesses that most commonly resulted in fatalities were (from greatest to least case fatality risk) systemic problems, colic, gastrointestinal problems (other than colic), neurological problems, and foot and hoof problems.

Impact of disease was evaluated in terms of average duration of a case and days lost for performance. Neurological problems, lameness and dermatological problems had the longest duration per case. Neurological problems, lameness, respiratory problems and gastrointestinal problems (other than colic) had the longest average days lost per case.  相似文献

Abdominal pain (colic) in the horse is one of the most acute problems facing equine practitioners. Several causes and risk factors are associated with colic. The current study evaluated the incidence and associated risk factors of colic during a 1-year evaluation in horse farms of Kerman, Iran. The study investigated age, sex, breed, anthelmintic control program, and nutritional status of 128 horses of four breeds on six farms that took part in the study. The mean incidence density rate of colic in the horse population was 8.6% (11/128) in a year. Crossbred horses had more chance of developing colic (P < .05). Horses between the ages of 2 and 10 years also had more risk of developing colic (P < .05). There was no significant difference between sexes (P < .05), and nutritional factors were the most associated risk factors in the cases under study.  相似文献

Colic can be a life‐threatening condition in horses and there is a need for parameters that can help determine the prognosis and need for surgery. The aim of the study was to investigate whether peritoneal fluid (PF) lactate concentration is useful for this purpose in horses with severe colic presented to a veterinary hospital. During a 16 month period, the peritoneal fluid (PF) lactate concentration was measured in 74 of 760 colic horses admitted to the Utrecht University equine clinic using a portable analyser. When comparing survivors and nonsurvivors, heart rate, PF and blood lactate concentrations and blood glucose concentration were significantly higher in horses that did not survive. No horse with a PF lactate concentration >9.4 mmol/l survived. The presence of a strangulating lesion was also significantly associated with nonsurvival, as was PF colour: no horse with red PF survived in the present series. In horses with yellow PF, the blood glucose concentration was correlated with the presence of a strangulating intestinal lesion. Peritoneal lactate concentrations can be easily and rapidly measured using a portable analyser and may be useful in assessing the prognosis and/or need for surgery in equine colic cases.  相似文献

This report describes 4 fatal cases of serum hepatitis associated with the administration of commercial plasma in the horse. Serum hepatitis in the horse is characterized by acute hepatic central lobular necrosis, and it has been associated with the administration of biological products of equine origin. None of these horses had a recent history of equine biologic-origin vaccination; however, they had received 1.5-5 L of commercial plasma, and in I horse, an additional 8 L of fresh blood. Acute, severe colic unresponsive to medical therapy, lethargy, or sudden death developed in these 4 horses 41 to 60 days later. Two of the horses developed encephalopathy, confirmed in 1 horse by the presence of severe diffuse Alzheimer type II astrocytes in the brain. Although the prevalence of serum hepatitis associated with the administration of commercial plasma appears to be low in the horse, it should be considered an uncommon but potentially fatal risk factor.  相似文献

Infection with the tapeworm Anoplocephala perfoliata has been found to be associated with equine colic in horses in the United Kingdom. Using a matched case-control study design, data collected from 117 pairs of horses in Ontario were examined for evidence of associations between risk of colic and A. perfoliata infection, and between seropositivity to infection and management practices. Cases were horses in southern Ontario diagnosed with colic by local veterinarians, and control horses were from the same stables as cases and were matched by age, breed and gender where possible. Infection status was defined on the basis of positive results upon coprological examination, and/or seropositivity to a 12/13 kDa A. perfoliata secretory protein. Fifty-six percent of the 234 horses were seropositive for A. perfoliata, but eggs were found in samples from only 6% of horses. Horses dependent on pasture for a large part of their diet were significantly more likely to have ELISA optical density levels above 0.600 compared to other horses (odds ratio [OR]=6.38; p=0.029). This finding identified exposure to pasture as an important source of A. perfoliata infection in the horses used in the study. In a subset of 46 pairs of horses for which control horses had no known history of colic, a statistically significant negative association was found between the risk of colic and optical density (OD) levels >0.200-0.600, relative to OD levels < or = 0.090 (OR=0.08; p=0.017). There was no other statistical evidence of an association between the risk of colic and A. perfoliata infection.  相似文献

The use of echocardiography to study hemodynamic disturbances in colic horses has not been reported. The aim of this study was to noninvasively assess the effect of colic-related endotoxin shock on equine cardiac function. Fifty horses were admitted to the clinic on emergency for colic. A shock score from 1 to 4 was established for each horse on the basis of clinical evaluation, noninvasive systolic blood pressure, and blood tests. Left ventricular echocardiographic and Doppler parameters were compared between the four groups according to the shock score (1 = no or discrete signs of shock, n = 11; 2 = mild shock, n = 17; 3 = moderate shock, n = 12; 4 = severe shock, n = 10), using a multivariate analysis. Horses with a shock score of 1 were considered as controls. Significance was set at P < .05. The stroke volume, stroke index, ejection time, ejection time index corrected for heart rate, aortic velocity time integral, aortic flow acceleration time, and aortic flow deceleration time were significantly lower, whereas acceleration rate of aortic flow ejection and heart rate were significantly higher in shocked horses, as compared with the horses in the control group. Cardiac output was not significantly different between groups. Although these results are difficult to interpret because of the shock-induced changes in loading conditions of the heart, they suggest that alterations in some indicators of systolic function can be quantified by Doppler echocardiography in horses with colic-induced endotoxemic shock. Ultrasonographic monitoring of cardiovascular function could therefore be of interest in equine intensive care.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of colic in horses in Thoroughbred training premises in 1997 in the British Isles. The seasonal pattern and outcome of colic episodes were also investigated, together with any association between premises level variables and colic. Data were collected by a postal questionnaire. The results showed a colic incidence density of 7.19/100 horse years (s.e. 0.42) and a cumulative incidence of colic of 5.80% (s.e. 0.30). Premises were grouped according to whether they had more Flat than National Hunt horses (Flat premises) or more National Hunt than Flat horses (NH premises). A similar rate of colic episodes was found in each group. However, significantly higher cumulative incidences of one episode of colic were found in the Flat premises and of multiple episodes in the NH premises, respectively. The outcome of each episode of colic showed spontaneous recovery in 28.7%, medical recovery in 63.1%, surgical recovery in 2.0% and death in 6.2% of cases. This indicated an overall mortality rate from colic of 0.45 deaths/100 horse years. The seasonal pattern of episodes of colic showed a spring and autumn peak, with significant differences in the seasonal pattern between the Flat and NH premises. Relative risk analysis and logistic regression modelling with random effects showed significant associations between the number of episodes of colic and the number of horses on the premises (allowing for the number of horses on each premises, the larger premises had a decreased risk of colic). After adjusting for the number of horses, 3 other variables were associated with colic; Flat premises (with an increased risk), the owner being the sole person looking after the horses (a decreased risk) and the premises being a combined training and breeding establishment (a decreased risk).  相似文献

No published reports on the occurrence of Mendelson's syndrome (pneumonitis caused by aspiration during anaesthesia) in horses were found in the literature. Although the peculiar anatomy of the equine stomach makes horses less prone than other species to regurgitate, gastric reflux may still occur in horses with colic under certain circumstances. The colic horses in this report had in common stomach impaction, abdominal distention and preanaesthetic placement of a nasogastric tube, which was not withdrawn prior to induction. In both cases, a significant volume of gastric reflux was noted pouring from the endotracheal tube during general anaesthesia for exploratory laparotomy. It was hypothesised that the cause of gastric reflux was the combination of increased intra-abdominal pressure and patency of the cardia, and that inhalation of gastric content occurred at induction, before tracheal intubation. Treatment, which failed to improve oxygenation, consisted of repositioning of the horses to facilitate passive drainage of gastric content from the airways, active suction through the endotracheal tubes, ventilation strategies, improvement of haemodynamics to increase the pulmonary perfusion, and administration of bronchodilators. One horse was subjected to euthanasia owing to poor prognosis. Aspiration pneumonitis should be regarded as a life-threatening, although rare, perianaesthetic complication in equine colic cases. Patency of the cardia and increased intra-abdominal pressure are possible predisposing factors. Partial or even total withdrawal of the nasogastric tube prior to anaesthetic induction and tracheal intubation performed with the horse positioned in sternal recumbency may be undertaken as preventive measures in patients at high risk of developing Mendelson's syndrome.  相似文献

REASON FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Epiploic foramen entrapment (EFE) is one of the most common causes of small intestinal strangulation in the horse. Identification of risk factors would generate hypotheses about causation and may suggest preventive strategies. HYPOTHESIS: Horses exhibiting certain behavioural patterns and those exposed to particular management practices are at increased risk of EFE. METHODS: A matched case-control study was conducted on EFE cases admitted to hospitals in the UK, Ireland and USA. Data on 109 cases and 310 control horses were obtained by telephone questionnaire and conditional logistic regression was used to identify associations between horse- and management-level variables and the risk of EFE. RESULTS: Crib-biting/windsucking behaviour was strongly associated with increased risk of EFE (OR 67.3, 95%CI 15.3-296.5). A history of colic in the previous 12 months (OR 4.4, 95%CI 1.5-12.7) and horses of greater height (OR/cm 1.05, 95%CI 1.01-1.08) were also at increased risk. The person(s) responsible for horses' daily care (nonowner/relative/spouse OR 5.5, 95%CI 2.3-13.3) and a number of behavioural features, including response to a stimulus causing fright (easily frightened OR 0.4, 95%CI 0.1-1.0) or excitement (sweats up easily/occasionally OR 0.3, 95%CI 0.1-0.8), reaction to their surroundings (inquisitive OR 0.4, 95%CI 0.2-0.8) and feeding behaviour when stressed (goes off food in full/part OR 0.3, 95%CI 0.1-1.0) were also associated with altered risk of EFE. CONCLUSIONS: The association between horses of greater height and those with a previous history of colic and increased risk of EFE suggests that some horses may be inherently predisposed to EFE. Furthermore, a behavioural pattern has been characterised that is common to horses at increased risk of EFE. Further research is required to investigate the causal pathway linking behavioural traits with gastrointestinal dysfunction and to determine whether behavioural modification reduces the risk of EFE. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: The findings of the present study have relevance to horses in the UK, Ireland and USA.  相似文献

Three horses (age 17 - 23 years) were referred to the equine clinic of the University of Berne due to colic, fever, tachycardia and tachypnea. All horses showed pleural effusion. Clinical findings in 2 of the horses were highly suggestive of an intra-thoracic esophageal perforation. Severe septic pleuropneumonia without suspicion of an esophageal lesion was diagnosed in the 3rd horse. In addition, an 11 year old stallion was referred to the equine clinic for treatment of a presumptive large colon impaction. The horse was given laxatives after nasogastric intubation. Subsequent dramatic clinical deterioration and signs consistent with severe pleuropneumonia suggest that esophageal perforation had occurred when passing the nasogastric tube. All 4?horses were euthanized due to a poor prognosis. Esophageal perforation was diagnosed or confirmed post mortem in all cases. A hypertrophy of the tunica muscularis of the intra-thoracic esophagus was found in 3 of 4?horses.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of pedunculated lipomas and identify risk factors affecting postoperative complications and survival in horses at a veterinary teaching hospital undergoing surgery for colic caused by pedunculated lipomas. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 102 horses with a diagnosis of pedunculated lipoma. PROCEDURE: Age, breed, weight, and sex of horses with pedunculated lipomas were compared with the total equine hospital population and the population of horses admitted for abdominal surgery during the same period. Follow-up information was obtained by reevaluation or contact with owners via telephone or written request. RESULTS: Prevalence of pedunculated lipomas as a reason for abdominal surgery in horses, compared with the population of horses with and without lipomas admitted for abdominal surgery, was 10%. Castrated male Saddlebred and Arabian horses > 14 years old were identified as being at risk for developing pedunculated lipomas. Postoperative complications were detected in 72% of horses with pedunculated lipomas. Variables associated with low survival rates included surgery before 1992, heart rate > 80 beats/min, abnormal color of abdominal fluid, pale mucous membranes, surgery requiring intestinal resection, and inability to attain a mean arterial pressure > or = 100 mm Hg. Horses undergoing surgery from 1992 to 1996, weighing < 409 kg (900 lb), or requiring jejunojejunal anastomosis had a high survival rate. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although many of the variables reflected the health of the horse at the time of surgery, results may help veterinarians recognize risk factors associated with development of pedunculated lipomas and better predict the outcome of horses undergoing surgery for colic caused by pedunculated lipomas.  相似文献

In a survey of 13 Louisiana equine practices, it was determined that 366 of 3,316 horses developed adverse reactions following use of ivermectin, with 3 of the horses having more than 1 reaction. Almost all of the reactions were of minor to moderate concern; however, 1 death was reported. Three hundred and thirty-two (91% of all reactions) were reported as ventral midline pruritus or edema (10% of all doses). Fifteen (0.45%) were transient injection site swelling and/or stiffness. Eleven horses (0.33%) developed limb edema. Eyelid edema was reported in 4 horses (0.12%). Two horses (0.06%) had fever. Rate and depth of respiration was increased in 1 horse (0.03%). One horse (0.03%) became disoriented. Three horses (0.09%) developed signs of colic. One horse (0.03%) died a few minutes after injection, and 1 horse (0.03%) became depressed. The survey covered the period from March to August of 1983.  相似文献

Postoperative complications and mortality can occur many weeks or months after colic surgery. We are interested in the long-term outcome of these cases. This study documents patterns of mortality and morbidity among 341 horses that recovered from colic surgery March 1998-August 2000. The progress of each horse was rigorously followed by periodic telephone and postal questionnaires. Event time data were recorded for each animal and a total of 321 horse years of survival, together with death from all causes, colic-related death and various postoperative complications. Postoperative survival (of all horses excluding grass sickness cases) was triphasic over the first 600 days and there was marked mortality in the first 10 days postoperatively. The probability of survival postoperatively decreased to 0.87 by 10 days, 0.82 by 100 days and declined slowly to 0.75 at 600 days. Horses suffering from epiploic foramen entrapment had a significantly reduced probability of postoperative survival (RR = 2.1, P = 0.033). The causes of death for 104 horses that died postoperatively and the prevalence of postoperative complications are recorded for the study population. Postoperative colic was the most prevalent complication with 100 horses (29%) suffering one or more episodes. However, only 16 horses (4.6%) suffered 3 or more episodes. The incidence of postoperative colic was 0.55 episodes/horse year at risk. This study provides data that will inform the prognosis for postoperative colic cases and identifies epiploic foramen entrapment as carrying a worse prognosis for survival than other strangulating lesions.  相似文献

A study was conducted in April through August 1989 whereby 318 horses were tested for immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) titers to Ehrlichia risticii. The state of Colorado was divided into four regions and an approximately equal number of horses was tested in each region. Questionnaires were completed for each horse; a multiple logistic regression model was used to identify risk factors for horses being exposed to E. risticii.

Of the 318 horses tested, 48 (16%) had IFA titers of 1:40 or greater (range 1:40–1:1280). There was no association between the region of Colorado and seropositivity. Other variables which were not identified as risk factors included gender, transportation to other parts of Colorado, transportation to other states and exposure to other horses. When the variables were examined individually, older horses, Quarter horses, horses housed at a boarding stable, and horses having access to pasture or direct access to a stream, pond or lake were more likely to have positive titers. Horses confined to a stall with a run were less likely to be exposed to E. risticii. All apparent associations disappeared when the factors were tested in the multiple logistic regression model.  相似文献

Data are presented on the last 3 years of a 7-year study (1989–1995) on transmission of natural infections of internal parasites in horse foals (n = 27) born in 1993, 1994, and 1995 on the same pasture on a farm in central Kentucky. The foals were in a closed breeding herd of horses. Research on the first 4 years (1989–1992) of the study was published earlier (Lyons et al., 1991, 1994). Thirty-five species of endoparasites were identified, including 24 species of small strongyles. Monthly, seasonal, and host-age transmission patterns were elucidated for the parasites. Comparison of data between the first 4 years and last 3 years of the study indicates similarities, but also differences, including an increase in prevalence and numbers of Thelazia lacrymalis and Anoplocephala perfoliata.  相似文献
