Abstract. In an investigation of the occurrence of proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in freshwater fish other than rainbow trout, 18 species of wild fish and seven species of fish raised in cultivation wore sampled from waters where the disease occurred annually in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Richardson). Results revealed that certain wild stocks of brown trout. Salmo trutta L., grayling, Thymallus thymallus L., and pike, Esox lucius L., were infected with PKD, as were cultivated Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., parr, brown trout and char, Salvelinus alpinus (L.). Microscopical examination revealed the presence of the PKX cell in these species and also intraluminal protozoa possibly related to the PKX cell, which were not found in the rainbow trout. Other species of freshwater fish had myxosporidan infections but, unlike PKD infection, there was little host/parasite tissue response. The PKX cell as a myxosporidan stage is discussed and the presence of the disease in wild fish is reported.  相似文献

Abstract. A study of selected haematological parameters in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, exposed to proliferative kidney disease (PKD) under field conditions is described. Changes in the blood picture are related to kidney pathology at different stages of the disease. As extensive renal vascular pathology, haemoglobin crystallization and inflammatory lesions developed, there were progressive decreases in haemoglobin and packed cell volume values, erythrocyte numbers declined to less than 50% of those in control fish, and numbers of misshapen erythrocytes increased. Leucopenia, neutrophilia and thrombocytopenia developed, especially in oedematous fish. With recovery, most values were similar to those of control fish. In recovered, re-challenged fish, erythrocyte counts, packed cell volume and haemoglobin values decreased in infected fish compared with uninfected fish. The results of the study are compared with those of other authors and the type of anaemia in PKD is discussed.  相似文献

The results from a survey for proliferative kidney disease (PKD) and renal myxosporidiosis in wild salmonids from rivers in England and Wales are presented. One hundred and eighty-five salmon, Salmo salar , 235 brown trout, Salmo trutta , 16 charr, Salvelinus alpinus, and five grayling, Thymallus thymallus, were obtained from 23 locations on 16 rivers between July and October 1997. They were examined for the presence of clinical PKD and for histological evidence of infections with Tetracapsula bryosalmonae and other renal myxozoans. Prevalence of infection with T. bryosalmonae detected histologically in brown trout varied from 11 to 43% in enzootic rivers and was only found in salmon in two rivers at low prevalence. Nephromegaly was positively associated with PKD in brown trout but in salmon mild nephromegaly was only associated with infection with an unidentified Chloromyxum sp.  相似文献

The seasonality of proliferative kidney disease (PKD) and the effects of water temperature on the development of the disease in naturally-infected fingerling rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, were investigated. Fingerling rainbow trout became infected from May to October, but those infected in October did not develop clinical disease. In naturally-infected fish subsequently held under laboratory conditions, clinical PKD occurred at 12–18°C, but not at 9°C. The disease progressed more rapidly and was more severe as temperatures increased. On re-exposure to infection, rainbow trout previously held at 9°C developed clinical PKD, whereas in those previously held at 12°C it did not develop. Possible implications of these findings for the control of PKD are discussed.  相似文献

Koi herpesvirus (KHV) causes a highly virulent disease affecting carp, Cyprinus carpio L., and poses a serious socio‐economic threat to the UK carp industry. This study aimed to determine the geographic distribution and prevalence of KHV exposed fish in England and Wales through ELISA antibody testing. Only three of the 82 farms sampled produced positive results, suggesting fish farms provide a relatively safe source of fish. Of the 71 ‘high‐risk’ fisheries tested, 26 were positive. All eight geographic areas within England and Wales studied had at least one KHV positive site. Twelve consignments of imported koi carp from seven S.E. Asian countries were tested for KHV antibody. Six consignments from six different countries were positive. Although a high proportion of consignments were positive, the results indicate that lower risk stocks of fish exist that could be sourced by the ornamental carp sector. The study provides evidence that KHV is widespread and prevalent in ‘high‐risk’ fisheries. There are, however, prospects for controlling KHV as English and Welsh farms appear to be relatively free of the virus, and in most cases fish are not moved from fisheries to other waters.  相似文献

The effects of malachite green upon proliferative kidney disease   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. When rainbow trout infected with proliferative kidney disease (PKD) held in the laboratory were treated with malachite green and formalin to cure ichthyophthiriasis it was observed that subsequent development of PKD was delayed. Experiments are reported which indicate that this was due to the malachite green treatment. The possible use of malachite green in the treatment of PKD, tissue levels of malachite green achieved during treatments and the toxicity risks from multiple dose therapy with malachite green are discussed.  相似文献

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) is an emerging parasitic disease that affects wild and farmed salmonid fishes worldwide. Currently, it is widespread in Europe with records in many countries. This study assessed the status of PKD in the river Wulka, a small Austrian river, which was known to host a vital brown trout population despite having high water temperatures. Contrary to the initial hypothesis that the river was free from PKD, we observed an overall PKD prevalence of 92%. Noninfected fish were restricted to the uppermost river section. Twenty-two out of 87 PKD-positive fish of all age classes showed clinical signs, while five individuals exhibited signs of recovering from PKD infection. The severity of clinical signs was significantly dependent on the fish length and age, with smaller or younger individuals being more severely affected. Comparison of data from the earlier fish sampling events with those results from 2017 and 2018, together with the analyses of the pattern of water temperature since 2010, indicates that Wulka's brown trout population might become extinct in the near future.  相似文献

Recreational inland fisheries are recognized to have considerable socio-economic benefits, not only for individuals participating directly but also for others in both local and wider communities. In England and Wales the Environment Agency (EA) has a duty to maintain, improve and develop inland fisheries. At present, there are no recent economic evaluations of the whole range of UK inland fisheries for the EA to refer to when confronted with resource issues. There is a particular need to explore the benefits of fisheries to the wider community, in order to secure more resources for management and protection of fisheries. Preliminary results from a multi-modular project to study the economic values associated with recreational fisheries in England and Wales are presented. Topics examined included recreational anglers' consumer surplus, general public non-use values of fisheries, social benefits of recreational fishing and impacts of fisheries on local communities.  相似文献

Abstract. A histological study of 0+ rainbow trout, exposed to proliferative kidney disease (PKD) on an infected farm, showed evidence of infection from the beginning of June, gross pathological changes from the beginning of July, and clinical signs from mid-July. Evidence of healing was present in some samples from the second week of August. Kidney samples were divided into five grades (0–4) representing increasing severity of pathology. A sixth grade (H) was applied to kidneys showing signs of healing. The most frequent clinical signs were abdominal distension and exophthalmos. Melanosis, corneal cloudiness and ecchymoses were observed occasionally. Apart from renal enlargement, other internal gross pathological changes included ascites, gill and liver pallor, oedema, petechiation, and splenic enlargement. The majority of clinical signs and internal changes were only seen in fish with advanced renal swelling (grades 3 and 4). Histopathology was most marked in the kidney and was of three types: haemopoietic hyperplasia, vascular pathology and diffuse inflammatory change. Vascular changes, including occlusion of blood vessels in several organs and apparent haemoglobin crystallization, and destruction of renal excretory structures within areas of chronic diffuse inflammation were marked features of the histopathology in fish with clinical signs. The pathogenesis of PKD is discussed with reference to the histopathological changes.  相似文献

Tetracapsula bryosalmonae, previously referred to as PKX, causes proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in salmonids and is an economically important myxozoan pathogen in salmonid culture. A variety of molecular and immunological tools have been developed to detect the parasite. To determine the specificity of four monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) raised against T. bryosalmonae, archive material of fish infected with various myxosporean species was obtained and immunostained. Wild fish were also collected from enzootic waters and examined for T. bryosalmonae infection using immunohistochemistry and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three of the MAb probes appear to be specific for T. bryosalmonae while only two of the five sets of primers tested appeared to specifically amplify T. bryosalmonae DNA. The results of the immunostaining and the PCR demonstrate that T. bryosalmonae occurs in the tubules of grayling Thymallus thymallus L., brown trout, Salmo trutta L. and Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. outside of the PKD season (June‐September) in the UK. This confirms the results of previous studies that these species are the preferred fish hosts for the parasite in the UK.  相似文献

Abstract. Two monoclonal antibody probes were produced against PK'X' cells. The parasites were partially purified by filtration and centrifugation of kidney tissue from rainbow trout with proliferative kidney disease and used as antigen for immunization of mice. The resulting monoclonal antibodies reacted with PK'X' cell antigens in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunohistochemistry tests. One antibody (Mab 12) appeared to be specific for PK'X'in kidney tissue, while the other (Mab 18) cross-reacted with host cell antigens in the kidney tubules. These probes are invaluable tools for the investigation of parasite surface antigens and life cycle studies.  相似文献

Freshwater fish populations in England and Wales form an important resource with up to 2.2 million anglers involved in the recreational fishery. The resource consists principally of indigenous and naturalised cyprinids, and strongholds of species endangered elsewhere in Europe. Each component is under pressure from a range of sources including water abstraction and climate change. Water resources are under significant pressure and droughts in parts of England and Wales exposed the fragility of water supply systems. Climate change is a major concern, driving a re-assessment of water supply yields. There are no objective methods available to predict changes in fish communities likely to arise from different water resource management options, except for simple systems. It is difficult to manage water resources using anything other than a precautionary approach. Accurate assessment of environmental requirements are required to strike the right balance between the needs of aquatic ecosystems and of economic efficiency.  相似文献

1. Sample areas of the county were used to estimate pond loss. An extensive survey used only maps while a smaller, intensive survey combined maps with a field study. In total, 283.43 km2 were surveyed, approximately 7% of the total area. 2. Fifty-five per cent of the ponds present in 1870 had disappeared by 1960 with the greatest loss occurring between 1920 and 1960. 3. Loss of ponds in agricultural locations contributed most to this because of their high initial number and their high rates of loss. Percentage losses of large and small ponds were greater than for medium-sized ponds. 4. A field survey showed that a further 23% of a random sample of ponds shown on maps of 1960 could not be found in 1989. Overall loss rates for the period 1870–1989 are estimated to be 68.6% for the extensive area and 54.8% for the intensive area.  相似文献
