The seasonal gonadal changes in the edible clam, Paphia laterisulca, from the Kalbadevi Estuary at Ratnagiri were studied for the period from May 1972 to April 1973 with the help of fresh gonad smears and histological study. The observations of gonad smears revealed the probable commencement of spawning between September and April from the occurrence of spent gonads. Male and female clams were present in almost equal numbers throughout the year.Histological details revealed that the clam P. laterisulca has a prolonged spawning period extending from mid-September to the end of March with two peaks, the first in October–November and the second in February–March. Lysis of the ripe gametes in both sexes for 2.5 months preceding spawning was observed. The second spawning peak was followed by regression in the gonads.Active gametogenesis was observed in May and June (33.5°C and 30.0°C), and again in December and January (21.5°C and 26.0°C) in clams that had spawned during the first spawning peak. The spawning stimulus in Paphia laterisulca appeared to be the sudden increase in salinity (from 4.1 to 22.5‰) in September in the Kalbadevi Estuary.  相似文献

Gonadal development and spawning of white mullet, Mugil curema in the Gulf of Paria, Trinidad, West Indies, was investigated using both macroscopic and histological techniques. M. curema is a multiple batch spawner with a protracted spawning season from November to July. Gonadal development is annual and each female appears to spawn at least twice per year. The prolonged spawning season may thus be an indication of the lack of population synchrony rather than prolonged spawning by a single individual. Peak-spawning activity occurs in June/July and it is hypothesized that it is in response to the start of the rainy season. Oocyte development is group synchronous and development of oocytes in the leading clutch is isochronal.  相似文献

Serotonin induced spawning in six bivalve species using individual spawning techniques without any additional stimuli. Intragonadal injection of serotonin induced spawning in the bay scallop Argopecten irradians, the American oyster Crassostrea virginica, and the surf clam Spisula solidissima. Injection of serotonin into the anterior adductor muscle of the ocean quahog Arctica islandica, the ribbed mussel Geukensia demissa, and the hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria induced spawning. The dosage of 0.4 ml of 2 mM serotonin solution used in this study stimulated bivalves to spawn within 15 min.  相似文献

A study of the reproductive cycle of the baby clam, Marcia opima (Gmelin) was conducted at two sites along the southeast (Tuticorin Bay) and southwest (Ashtamudi estuary) coast of India from December 1998 to January 2000. Histological evidence showed that baby clam from both the sites showed two spawning seasons. First spawning season was recorded from May to July in the southeast coast. In the southwest coast, the first spawning season was observed through March to May. A second spawning season from September to December was recorded in both the coasts. In the southeast coast, minimum and maximum condition indices were obtained in January 2000 and April 1999 respectively and decreased from May to June and November to January, signifying the two spawning periods. Most of the animals were either in spent or indeterminate gonadal stage from May to August and November to January indicating the active spawning during that months in the southeast coast.  相似文献

Using standard equations, we have concluded that the light intensities which have been used by investigators attempting to induce maturation and spawning are up to 4000 times higher than would occur over the spawning grounds of Penaeus setiferus, a species for which successful controlled spawning has yet to be achieved. We recommend that future attempts at captive maturation and spawning with that species be conducted at light levels of no more than 12 μW cm?2 and that the intensity at which other species of shrimp are matured and spawned be examined relative to natural light levels on their spawning grounds. It is further recommended that the need for light of blue or green color be evaluated for its role as a promotor of maturation and spawning. The intent of these modifications in current spawning procedures is to eliminate the need for eyestalk ablation in captively spawned penaeid shrimp.  相似文献

We developed limit and target harvest control rules based on an age-, sex- and stage-structured model for managing the southwestern Gulf of St. Lawrence snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) stock. We determined an Fx% (F resulting in a spawning biomass-per-recruit equivalent to x% of virgin spawning biomass-per-recruit) as a proxy for FMSY and a minimum spawning stock biomass to open the fishery to incorporate them into the control rules. We evaluated the selected limit and target control rule parameters under stochastic simulations by considering various performance statistics. Because of the complexity in determining an effective female spawning biomass that involves a mating ratio, we choose the total mature male biomass (MMB) regardless of crab size as the spawning index to develop the stock–recruitment relationship for stochastic simulations. The MMB based F37% appears a reasonable proxy for limit control rule while F45% appears a reasonable target control rule. The corresponding limit and target harvest rates of legal size crab when the standing stock MMB exceeds the proxy MSY level are approximately 36% and 25%, respectively. The difficulty in establishing an appropriate stock–recruitment relationship for this stock was recognized hence a precautionary F45% target level was chosen. Scenarios under biomass independent random recruitment were also investigated and performances of F37% and F45% control rules under this hypothesis behaved similar to those observed under S–R model based simulations.  相似文献

Results of the present study demonstrated that a specific combination of spawning substrate and water current was indispensable for the spawning of mature Japanese dace, Triborodon hakonensis. It became evident that the environmental factors acted as a trigger for endocrine changes leading to final maturation in this species.  相似文献

Blood and ovarian samples were collected at intervals of 4h prior to spawning time from medaka (Oryzias latipes) that were maturationally synchronized with artificial photoperiod (14h light: 10h dark). Plasma estradiol-17β (E2) levels increased rapidly from 16h before spawning and peaked at 8h before spawning. Follicle-enclosed oocytes (ovarian follicles) at different stages of development were isolated from the ovaries and used to study the in vitro effects of thyroid hormone (triiodothyronine; T3) on pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (GTH)-induced E2 production. GTH at a concentration of 100 IU/ml stimulated E2 production by ovarian follicles collected between 32 and 16h before spawning. At 32h before spawning, T3 (5 ng/ml) administered along with GTH (100 IU/ml) resulted in a 3.5 fold increase in E2 production, compared with GTH administered alone. These results suggest that T3 can act on ovarian follicles directly to modulate GTH-stimulated E2 production in the medaka.  相似文献

The Japanese silver-biddy Gerres equulus (Temminck and Schlegel) is one of the most common shore fish in the costal waters of southern Japan and commercially important for the local fishery. In the present study, the reproductive biology of G. equulus is described for the first time and its spawning season and size at sexual maturity were determined. A total of 1081 specimens (484 males and 597 females) were collected in the Yatsushiro Sea, western Kyushu, Japan, from January 2001 to December 2002. Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index exhibited higher values between June and September, with a peak in July, and the trend was similar for both sexes. Furthermore, the sequential development of the ovaries observed through the histological studies suggested that the spawning season of G. equulus continued from June to September. The female attained sexual maturity at a minimum size of 141 mm standard length. The simultaneous presence of postovulatory follicles and yolk globules in some ovaries indicated that this species is a multiple spawner.  相似文献

The condition index was calculated for two samples of 600 C. rhizophorae taken from Jacuruna farm in September–October 1977 (spawning period) and December 1977–January 1978 (post-spawning period). There was a significant difference (P ≤ 0.05). Over the size range 2.1 to 10.0 cm (height) the condition index ranged from 59.0 ± 16.2 to 71.8 ± 30.5 for the spawning period, but was only 27.1 ± 10.2 to 43.9 ± 33.0 for the post-spawning period. The size class 4.1 to 6.0 cm gave the best commercial yields and was considered more suitable for the shucked oyster than the fresh oyster market.  相似文献

Some anguillid spawning areas are known based on collections of small larvae, but recently for the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica, adult spawners have been caught in trawls and their eggs and preleptocephali collected. The spawning area of A. japonica is located along the western side of the West Mariana Ridge, but the natural spawning behavior of this species or that of any other anguillid species has never been observed. This study reports on the first effort to observe spawning aggregations of anguillid eels that was conducted by the R/V Yokosuka using the Shinkai 6500 submersible and a Deep-Tow camera system in the A. japonica spawning area in July 2012. The submersible was deployed mostly at 200–800 m during daytime and the Deep-Tow was deployed mostly at 130–250 m during nighttime, both in multiple oblique depth tracks along linear transects. Various fishes and invertebrates were seen in the pelagic environment during day and night, but no spawning aggregations were observed. One eel was briefly recorded by a Deep-Tow camera at 20:13 on 17 July (2 days before new moon) at a depth of 179 m. The eel was recorded for <1 s as it passed in front of the camera. Its anterior body and head shape were consistent with a male A. japonica, or possibly a Derichthys serpentinus eel, but not with other mesopelagic eels. Because the tail region of the eel was not visible, species identification was not possible.  相似文献

This paper investigates the temporal responses of 2-year old Crassostrea gigas to environmental changes in Stansbury, South Australia from September 2005 to October 2006. A total of 360 oysters were grown in one-line baskets on the farm using six replicates that were sampled monthly. A range of environmental parameters were assessed and correlated against biological indicators for oyster condition, metabolism and antimicrobial activity. Food availability by chlorophyll a, was low throughout the study period (0.5–1.5 µg L? 1) and was significantly correlated to phosphorus concentrations. The condition index and shell weight of oysters significantly increased over the year, with the condition index dropping after spawning but then recovering within one month. Significant temporal variation in energy storage and utilization were observed in different tissues over the year. Glycogen in the mantle tissue was influenced by reproduction and correlated to chlorophyll a levels, but not in the gill or adductor muscle. The mantle glycogen and gill protein reached the lowest level in February when spawning occurred and presented evidence for seasonal variation in oyster metabolic activity. However, mantle and adductor muscle proteins did not drop after spawning indicating that these proteins contribute little to gametogenesis. Hemolymph protein was negatively correlated to water temperature and chlorophyll a, reaching the lowest level during summer. Hemolymph antibacterial activity significantly decreased after spawning, implying that the period of post-spawning is critical for oyster health. This study revealed trade-offs in the energy budget between immune resistance, growth, and reproduction. The results indicate that in a lean water environment, spawning events significantly regulate metabolic and immune capacities of oysters and a second year of rearing increased meat and shell weight but not the shell length. These findings are applicable to the management and development of oyster aquaculture within temperate southern hemisphere.  相似文献

Aspects of the reproductive biology of Pomadasys argenteus, Otolithes argenteus and Pampus argenteus are described. Maturation of the gonads is divided into 8 arbitrary stages, and the distribution of the stages in an annual cycle is reported. In Pomadasys argenteus there is a major spawning period from February to April and another minor one in October. In Otolithes argenteus there is one distinct spawning period from January to April. The spawning season of Pampus argenteus extends from March to August. The histology of the gonads and the distribution of oocytes of different diameters in the ovaries of the 3 fish species are described. The distribution of oocyte diameters in the ovary of Pampus argenteus is polymodal and characteristic of serial spawners, whereas the distribution of oocyte diameters in Pomadasys argenteus and Otolithes argenteus corroborate the finding that these fish are single spawners. The estimated potential fecundity for Pomadasys argenteus ranged from 6 25 848 to 2 424 846, for Otolithes argenteus from 53 676 to 7 163 954 and for Pampus argenteus from 765 675 to 2 537 774.  相似文献

The white seabream, Mylio berda, was induced to spawn spontaneously by hormone injections of synahorin or human chorionic gonadotropin for over 3 months between December and April in Hong Kong. Fertilized eggs were also obtained during the peak spawning period between February and March through natural spawning or artificial insemination. The hatched larvae were reared in 500-1 circular tanks and fed initially on rotifers, Brachionus sp., followed by brine shrimp nauplii or copepod nauplii and finally weaned onto fish meat. Larval rearing trials for growth and survival to 60 days produced larvae of average length, 26.2 mm, at survival rates ranging from 1.32 to 11.62%.  相似文献

The white croaker, Pennahia argentata (Houttuyn), is abundant in demersal fish assemblages in Ariake Sound and is a commercially important species. The reproductive biology of white croaker was studied by measurement of gonadosomatic indices (GSI) and histological examination of ovaries. Ovaries were classified into one of five maturity stages based on histological data: (1) immature/resting stage; (2) developing stage; (3) maturing stage; (4) ripe/spawning stage; (5) spent stage. The spawning season lasts from April to September but most activity is observed from May to August. Age at sexual maturity was assumed to be 1 year. Postovulatory follicles coexisted with yolk stage oocytes in histological sections of ovaries indicating that white croaker is a multiple spawner, spawning more than once in a single spawning season. Judging from the diel changes in the proportion of females with ovaries containing postovulatory follicles and oocytes at maturation stage, most females spawned in the evening between 19:00 and 21:30 h.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that cellular-type composition of eastern king prawn (Melicertus plebejus) ovaries varies in space and time along the coast of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The ‘point count technique’ commonly used in ecological studies but rarely in studies of reproductive biology was used to describe the oocyte composition of ovaries. Within Times there were differences in the cellular-type composition between Locations (Global R = 0.357 and 1% significance). Most dissimilarity was in pairwise comparisons between the southern most and each of the other locations (R values 0.2–0.6, P = 0.001). Within Locations there were differences in similarity between Times (Global R = 0.214 and 0.1% significance). Most dissimilarity occurred in pairwise comparisons between winter and summer (R values 0.36–0.45, P = 0.001). Females capable of spawning are found across the latitudinal range of the main offshore prawn fishing grounds but the main spawning area is in the north and whilst these females occur year around, we did not detect evidence of winter spawning in waters off NSW. As part of the sampling strategy, we were able to show that macro-staging of ovaries is satisfactory for distinguishing between yolked and unyolked eggs in eastern king prawns and for identifying females capable of spawning.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of infection by the protozoan Perkinsus olseni on the reproduction of female Manila clams, Ruditapes philippinarum, from a population in Gomso Bay, Korea. The reproductive effort of the clams was assessed by ELISA using a clam egg-specific antibody and was expressed as a weight-based gonadosomatic index (GSI). The number of Perkinsus infecting each clam was estimated from the gills using Ray's fluid thioglycollate medium (RFTM) along with a NaOH digestion assay. We found that reproductive effort was negatively correlated with the intensity of the Perkinsus infection: more heavily infected clams produced fewer eggs during the spawning period from May to August. Frequency of spawning was also negatively correlated with the level of Perkinsus infection; heavily infected clams (HIC) exhibited a single spawning pulse in late July, whereas lightly infected clams (LIC) showed three spawning peaks in mid-May, late July, and late August. Egg production of HIC was only 30–75% of LIC during spawning. The level of total protein in LIC was also higher year round than in HIC. In conclusion, our investigation demonstrates that a high level of Perkinsus infection affects spawning frequency and reduces egg production, which may have long-term impacts on clam recruitment and population growth.  相似文献

The southwestern Pacific coast of Hokkaido is the main spawning ground for the Japanese Pacific stock of walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma. A commercial gillnet fishery targeting spawning adult pollock in this area mainly operates from October to January to coincide with the migration of adult pollock from the feeding ground. Given the results of acoustic surveys, and changes in the proportion of the monthly total catch that was monthly walleye pollock caught by the commercial gillnet fishery, it is thought that the timing of walleye pollock spawning migration to the Donan area varies among years and that the pollock catch of the gillnet fishery clearly reflects changes in pollock abundance in this area. A time series of interannual variability in catch data from 1980 to 2005 suggested that adult pollock migrated and concentrated on their spawning ground later in the 1980s and after 2000 than in the 1990s. Such decadal-scale shifts are presumably caused by climatic changes (e.g., in water temperature) in the Oyashio region. These shifts affect the gillnet fishery through differences in monthly unit prices of pollock and changes in the formation of fishing grounds. These scientific findings can aid the establishment of rules for more efficient walleye pollock resource management under the total allowable catch system.  相似文献

Sexually mature males (BW?=?1600?±?150 g and TL?=?235?±?30 mm) of northern pike (Esox lucius L.) were randomly selected from a pond to record changes in their sperm quality parameters (spermatozoa morphology, sperm volume, density, and motility parameters) during the spawning season. The morphological and motility parameters changed significantly during the reproductive season with following trends. Only, head width was not changed during the spawning season. The longest spermatozoa and its flagellar length were found at the middle of spawning period (TL?=?38.24?±?0.37 μm and 35.14?±?0.26 μm) and shortest at the beginning of spawning period (TL?=?34.81?±?0.29 μm and 32.53?±?0.18 μm). Other morphological characters were always the lowest at the beginning of spawning period. Sperm volume was changed from 0.33?±?0.3 ml in February, 0.43?±?0.2 ml in March to 0.24?±?0.1 ml in April, and density from 16.2?±?0.2?×?109 spermatozoa ml?1 in February, 19.4?±?0.2?×?109 spermatozoa ml?1 in March to 4.8?±?0.2?×?109 spermatozoa ml?1 in April. Same sperm velocity was observed in all spawning terms at 10 and 20 s after activation. Higher velocity was found at 30 and 40 s after activation in sperm collected at the middle and the end of spawning period. Significantly, higher percentage of motile sperm was observed at 20, 30, and 40 s after activation in sperm sampled at the end of spawning period. This study supports the hypothesis that longer spermatozoa swim faster.  相似文献

We examined the spawning sites of several gobiid fishes in the subtidal zone of a small temperate estuary and determined the relationship of the nest abundance of each species with several environmental conditions, including water temperature, salinity, median particle size, proportion of silt and clay, current width, maximum water depth, distance from each site to the river mouth, and density of objects (boulders, cobbles, empty oyster shells, and empty clam shells) in the water. During this study, we found 115 nests belonging to the following six species: Favonigobius gymnauchen, Tridentiger obscurus, Leucopsarion petersii, Acanthogobius lactipes, Rhinogobius giurinus, and Tridentiger trigonocephalus. Stepwise multiple regression analysis, which was used to determine the best model for the nest abundance of all species, revealed that the nest abundance of each species clearly increased with an increase in the density of spawning substrates, such as cobbles and bivalve shells. These results show that the density of spawning substrates is a crucial factor affecting the selection of spawning habitats by each species.  相似文献
