The diagnostic challenge presented by an amelanotic uveal cyst with an atypical appearance in a 9‐year‐old Yorkshire terrier dog is reported. The dog was presented with a peculiar cystic neoformation adherent to the edge of the pupil of the right eye. The cyst wall was attached to the pupillary margin and it was bean‐shaped, measuring approximately 4.5 × 2.5 mm. It was white in colour with several red striations and a small brown spot in the middle, which conferred on it a peculiar appearance. The cyst could not be transilluminated and partially impaired vision. Apart from that, the ophthalmic exam revealed no other abnormalities and the eye showed no signs of inflammation. Ocular ultrasound revealed the cystic nature of the neoformation. During paracentesis of the anterior chamber, the cyst was deflated and both the cyst wall and fluid were aspirated. The tissue obtained was sent for a histological examination and was considered as corresponding to a uveal cyst. The dog improved from the post‐operative uveitis without any complication and after 24 months of follow‐up showed no recurrences.  相似文献

This is a retrospective histopathological study of archive slides from the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin from 1981 to 1997. Reports on eyes or ocular contents from 2176 dogs were reviewed. Five-hundred and thirty out of 2176 (24%) of the cases had a clinical or histologic diagnosis of glaucoma. Twenty-five out of 530 (5%) of the canine cases of glaucoma were in Golden Retrievers. Thirteen out of 25 (52%) of the Golden Retriever cases of glaucoma had iridociliary cysts. Iridociliary cysts in Golden Retrievers may lead to the development of glaucoma. Histologically all 13 of the cases of glaucoma and iridociliary cysts had large thin-walled cysts lined with attenuated cuboidal epithelium filling most of the posterior chamber. The following histologic features were also present: thick walled cysts containing hyaluronic acid (8/13; 62%), a solid cellular proliferation (2/13; 15%), a retrocorneal membrane associated with a defect in Descemet's membrane (7/13; 54%), iris bombé (5/13; 38%), a preiridal fibrovascular membrane (4/13; 31%), hemorrhage (4/13; 31%), a cellular membrane on the anterior lens surface (6/13; 46%), retinal detachment (5/13; 38%), peripheral anterior synechia (5/13; 38%), and posterior synechia (6/13; 46%). Complete follow up was obtained on 11/13 (85%) of the Golden Retrievers with glaucoma and iridociliary cysts. Two/11 (18%) of the dogs were euthanized due to intractable glaucoma. Eight/13 (62%) of the dogs had problems in the other eye. The other eye was diagnosed with uveitis 5/11 (45%), glaucoma 2/11(18%), pigment in the anterior chamber 3/11 (27%), and iridociliary cysts 4/11 (36%).  相似文献

Abstract We aimed to characterize intravitreal membranes in dogs and determine, if possible, associated predisposing conditions. Five globes in which intravitreal membranes were identified were evaluated. These originated from four Labrador Retrievers or Labrador-cross dogs and a Springer Spaniel. The ages of the dogs ranged from 4 to 11 years. Standard histology and immunohistochemical procedures for factor VIII-related antigen, smooth muscle actin (SMA), vimentin and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were performed. Intravitreal membranes varied from loosely to highly organized. The extent of organization corresponded with increasing immunoreactivity for vimentin and GFAP, indicating their predominantly glial origin. They were never immunopositive for smooth muscle actin, nor were they vascularized. In all cases, they were associated with intravitreal hemorrhage. Additional common findings included epiretinal membranes, retinal neovascularization, preiridal fibrovascular membranes and glaucoma. Intravitreal membranes may be a sequelae of intravitreal hemorrhage. This in turn, may arise from new vessels associated with epiretinal or preiridial membranes, or hemorrhage associated with optic disc cupping or retinal neovascularization. All of these phenomena may accompany glaucoma.  相似文献

A six-year-old intact male Pomeranian was examined because of right eye discomfort. An iris neoplasm was suspected and the eye was enucleated. A uveal melanoma with malignant features was diagnosed. The dog recovered uneventfully from surgery. A general physical examination was performed at 3-month intervals afterwards without any detectable problem, but 18 months after the first presentation the dog suffered a rapid, progressive paraplegia. Radiographic examination and myelography revealed a spinal cord compression at the level of the 8th thoracic (T8) vertebral body. Surgical exploration of the area revealed a potential vertebral neoplasm: histopathology confirmed a melanoma which was suspected to have resulted from metastasis from the previously diagnosed uveal melanoma.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe semiconductor diode laser use for anterior uveal cyst deflation and coagulation in dogs, horses and cats. ANIMALS STUDIED: The presenting clinical signs, surgical technique and postoperative results for four dogs, nine horses and seven cats with anterior uveal cysts treated with diode laser are described. Treated cysts were of sufficient size and/or number to potentially impair vision, damage the corneal endothelium, or increase intraocular pressure (IOP). One dog with free-floating cysts exhibited 'fly biting' behavior. Cysts were suspected of causing shying on the affected side and/or head-shaking behavior in seven horses. Cysts were free floating within the anterior chamber in dogs, occurred in the corpora nigrum in horses and were attached to the posterior iris surface in cats. In cats, shallowing of the anterior chamber and dyscoria were observed. In all cats prior to cyst deflation, IOP increased after pharmacologic pupil dilation. Cats were more likely than dogs and horses to have bilateral and multiple cysts. PROCEDURE: Two dogs and all horses were treated without general anesthesia and two dogs and all cats were treated under general anesthesia. Diode laser was used to perforate, deflate and coagulate the cysts. RESULTS: Postoperatively, all eyes were free of discomfort or significant inflammation and minimal or no topical or systemic anti-inflammatory therapy was required. Abnormal behavior improved or resolved in all cases. In all cats, IOP 24 h after photocoagulation was lower than the postdilation IOP. Cysts did not recur, but new cysts were discovered in several cases. CONCLUSION: Semiconductor diode laser coagulation of anterior uveal cysts is safe, effective and noninvasive.  相似文献

Epidermal (infundibular) and dermoid cysts are unusual in the horse in contrast with other species. The diagnosis and treatment of six lesions in the dorsal midline of a three-year-old Thoroughbred-cross gelding is described. The lesions were believed to be congenital and presented asymptomatically but required attention because five of them were in the saddle region, thus preventing ridden exercise. Under general anaesthesia, the cysts were excised and subsequently examined histologically. The horse recovered uneventfully. This report is novel in that such midline cysts have not previously been described outside Australia and North America.  相似文献

Epirubicin is a stereoisomer of doxorubicin that is widely used in human oncology. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the toxicity associated with epirubicin administration in dogs. Three hundred and fifteen treatments were administered to 139 dogs. Patients received between one and seven doses. One hundred and sixteen treatments were associated with toxicity in 81 patients (50 episodes of lethargy, 49 of diarrhoea, 42 of vomiting, 40 of anorexia, 2 hypersensitivity reactions and 2 suspected extravasations). Thirty-six (11%) adverse events resulted in hospitalization in 33 (24%) patients, of which 15 were neutropenic and 9 pyrexic. Mean duration of hospitalization was 3.4 days and 33 patients recovered uneventfully. Owners of 11 patients declined further treatment after toxicity occurred. After 25 treatments associated with toxicity, dose reductions reduced toxicity. The use of prophylactic anti-emetics, gastroprotectants and antibiotics did not reduce the frequency of gastrointestinal toxicity.  相似文献

Between 1989 and 1995 nine Great Danes were presented to the small animal clinic of the University of Zurich Teaching Hospital with glaucoma and multiple cysts in the anterior and posterior chamber. In four of the nine dogs cysts were present in both eyes; however, bilateral glaucoma was seen in one case only. Mean intraocular pressure (IOP) at initial presentation was 42 mmHg measured by applanation tonometry. With the exception of one dog, all animals were treated medically for a minimum of 13 days. Two animals were subsequently lost to follow up. Two dogs underwent evisceration with implantation of a silicone prosthesis. The glaucomatous globe was enucleated in three dogs. One owner declined surgery and the dog remained buphthalmic with a poorly controlled IOP. One animal remained visual after trans-scleral diode laser cyclophotocoagulation. Histopathology of the three enucleated globes showed multiple cysts originating from the ciliary body epithelium. The mechanism of IOP elevation is probably by anterior displacement of the iris with narrowing of the angle and collapse of the ciliary cleft. A delicate pre-iridal fibrovascular membrane was also seen in each case, which could have also contributed to the elevation of IOP. The high odds ratio of 2.23 (CI 95% 1.14, 3.99) for glaucoma and 37.01 (CI 95% 16.42, 77.81) for ciliary body cysts suggests they are both inherited in this breed. Pedigree analysis of the affected dogs failed to definitely reveal the mode of inheritance.  相似文献

A 10-month-old female, neutered French Bulldog presented with a history of unilateral right-sided intermittent conjunctivitis and exophthalmos. The patient suffered blunt force trauma to the right eye after a tennis ball impact approximately five months prior to presentation. Examination identified the patient was visual with exophthalmos, lateral strabismus, conjunctival hyperaemia, episcleral congestion, and papilloedema. Magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography identified an approximately two centimeter diameter fluid-filled structure directly posterior to the globe leading to displacement of the optic nerve and distortion of the posterior globe wall. Centesis of the lesion demonstrated neutrophilic and macrophagic inflammation with evidence of prior hemorrhage. Within four weeks, the structure had re-filled to its original size and was subsequently excised in its entirety, via a lateral orbitotomy. Histopathologic findings indicated a non-keratinising orbital cyst, the lining of which was consistent with a respiratory epithelial cyst. Recurrence had not occurred seven months' post-surgery. To the author's knowledge, previous reports of retrobulbar respiratory epithelial cysts have not been documented in animals.  相似文献

Objective – To report a case of bilateral uveitis believed to be a consequence of septic peritonitis in a 19‐month‐old cat. Case Summary – Bilateral anterior uveitis with suspicion of extension to the posterior segment was documented in a previously healthy young cat during hospitalization for severe septic peritonitis. Based on medical history and other findings uveitis was believed to result from concurrent abdominal sepsis, due either to metastatic seeding of bacterial organisms or to effects of bacterial toxins and inflammatory mediators on the blood‐aqueous barrier. The cat was surgically and medically managed, and made a full recovery with respect to both his ocular and his abdominal disease. New or Unique Information Provided – Ocular complications secondary to systemic sepsis are well documented in people but seldom reported in the veterinary literature. To the authors' knowledge this is the first report of uveitis linked to septic peritonitis in any veterinary species and the first to report sepsis‐related uveitis in a cat. Ocular inflammatory disease in the context of critical illness deserves attention as a potential significant source of morbidity. The development of ocular inflammatory disease may serve as a sentinel lesion for systemic sepsis and other life‐threatening conditions.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To investigate the role of pigment dispersion and inflammation in the pathogenesis of goniodysgenesis-related glaucoma (GDRG). PROCEDURES: Cases of GDRG were selected when the duration of the disease was specified and there was not any confounding pathology. Cases were grouped into < or = 7-day (acute), and > 7-day (chronic) durations, based on the time required to effect end-stage retinal damage. Acute cases were further divided into < 4-day and 4-7-day groups to assess peracute changes. Slides were evaluated for four individual signs of pigment dispersion: segmental loss of posterior iris pigment epithelium, clumping of posterior iris pigment epithelium, pigmented cells in the trabecular meshwork or anterior chamber and preferential settling of pigmented cells in the ventral aspect of the iridocorneal angle. Slides were also evaluated for the presence of neutrophils and/or lymphoplasmacytic cells in the trabecular meshwork (TM). Differences between groups were analyzed statistically. RESULTS: Of 100 cases evaluated, 34 were < or = 7-days (acute) (14 < 4-day and 20 4-7-day) and 66 were > 7-days (chronic) in duration. Of all globes examined, 96% had at least one sign of pigment dispersion, with no significant difference between groups. Two or more signs of pigment dispersion were present in 76% of all globes. The 4-7-day group was significantly more likely than the < 4-day group to have at least two signs. The difference was not significant between < or = 7- and > 7-day groups. Neutrophils were present in the TM of 86% of < 4-day and 50% of 4-7-day cases. Cases in the < or = 7-day group were significantly more [corrected] likely than > 7-day cases to have neutrophils in the TM, with 65% and 17% [corrected] positive cases, respectively. Lymphoplasmacytic inflammation was present in 53% of all cases, with no significant difference between groups. Cases in the < or = 7-day group were significantly more likely than > 7-day cases to have both types of inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that both acute inflammation and pigment dispersion may be key factors in the pathogenesis of GDRG. Pigment dispersion is prevalent at all time points and increases during the first 7 days. The finding of iris pigment epithelial loss supports the theory that pupillary block associated with iris-lens touching may be important in the pathogenesis of GDRG.  相似文献

A 4‐year‐old, female, spayed, Labrador retriever was presented with a painless swelling of the left ventromedial eyelid and epiphora of 3 months duration. Bilateral patency of the nasolacrimal system was confirmed by the appearance of fluorescein dye at both nares. Ultrasonography revealed a well‐demarcated fluid‐filled structure containing echogenic ill‐defined material in close proximity to the nasolacrimal system. A transconjunctival surgical approach confirmed the close anatomical proximity of the cyst and the absence of a communication with the inferior canaliculus. The cyst contained multiple intraluminal calculi (dacryoliths). Following surgical excision of the cyst, the epiphora resolved and no recurrence was noted over a 12‐month follow‐up period. On histopathology, the cystic structure was lined by stratified squamous epithelium, consistent with lacrimal canaliculus epithelium. Presumed progression of a canalicular diverticulum to a cyst with the formation of intraluminal dacryoliths was suspected. Mineral analysis of the dacryoliths revealed a calcium carbonate composition.  相似文献

Hair follicle neoplasms occur in many different species, including humans. In domestic animals, they are most common in dogs. Most hair follicle tumors are benign, but malignant neoplasms can also occur. To diagnose hair follicle neoplasms, a thorough knowledge of follicular anatomy is important, given that follicular tumors are classified according to the differentiation pattern seen in the corresponding part of the normal hair follicle. This review focuses on the key diagnostic features of hair follicle tumors and follicular cysts in dogs and cats.  相似文献
