A multicenter field efficacy study was performed in six farms located in Belgium, France and Germany with a history of suspected coccidiosis outbreaks and the proven presence of Eimeria bovis and/or Eimeria zuernii. At each of these trial sites the calves were randomly allocated to two groups (T, treated; C, control) of similar size. In total, 231 calves were included in the study. Group T calves (n=116) were drenched with a single dose of diclazuril (Vecoxan, 1mg/kg body weight) close to the time of expected outbreak of coccidiosis (day 1 of the study period), group C calves (n=115) served as placebo-treated controls. Although E. bovis and/or E. zuernii were identified at all trial sites, clinical coccidiosis was only noted in 16% of the group C calves. At day 5 of the study period (4 days after treatment), faecal oocyst counts (opg, oocysts per gram) were substantially lower in group T ("short-term effect") compared to group C. At four trial sites, the respective values of groups T and C were significantly different (P=0.0132 to P=0.0001) in favour of group T. For the pooled data of all trial sites, this effect was highly significant (P<0.0001). The overall faecal oocyst counts from day 3 until day 21 of the study period ("Area Under the Curve") was significantly reduced in group T by 87.2-99.5% ("long-term effect") at five trial sites (P=0.0139 to P<0.0001). The pooled data revealed a highly significant effect of treatment on oocyst excretion over the observation period (P<0.0001). On five of the six trial sites, the average weight gain was higher in group T than in group C. On those trial sites, the average weight gain of group T calves exceeded that of the controls by 95-268g/day and by 2.0-6.0kg over the study period. This effect was statistically significant (P<0.01) at one trial site. Altogether the calves of group T gained on average 129g more weight daily than the controls (+2.7kg over the study period). For these pooled data, statistical analysis confirmed the positive effect of treatment of calves exposed to coccidiosis on growth performance (P=0.003). In conclusion, metaphylactic treatment with diclazuril efficiently controls coccidiosis in calves thus reducing environmental contamination with oocysts and preventing negative effects of natural exposure to coccidiosis on growth performance of calves.  相似文献

One hundred forty spring-born Angus x Gelbvieh and purebred Angus steers were selected for study as early weaned (EW; average age at weaning = 90 +/- 30 d) or traditionally weaned (TW; average age at weaning = 174 +/- 37 d) steers that were non-implanted or implanted (Synovex-S, Fort Dodge Animal Health, Overland Park, KS). Initially, steers were sorted by age, sire, and farm, and then allotted randomly in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments of EW implanted (EWI), EW nonimplanted (EWN), TW implanted (TWI), or TW nonimplanted (TWN). Ultrasound measurements (US) of LM area (LMA), 12th rib fat thickness (US-BF), and marbling (US-M) were collected every 28 d during the time that steers were on feed. At 202 d of age, EW calves had larger US-LMA, US-BF, and BW than TW calves (37.9 vs. 32.3 cm2, 0.38 vs. 0.26 cm, and 271.6 vs. 218.9 kg, respectively; P < 0.001). At slaughter, EW calves had heavier HCW (290.4 vs. 279.7 kg, respectively; P < 0.05) and greater USDA marbling scores (51.25 vs. 46.26, respectively; P < 0.05) than TW calves; more EW steers graded USDA Choice or greater (P = 0.05). However, no differences were detected in BW (P = 0.15), LMA (P = 0.39), BF (P = 0.45), or liver abscess scores (P = 0.41). Twenty-four implanted steers were selected from the original group of 140 and sorted into two slaughter groups of 12. Twelve implanted steers from each weaning group, matched in slaughter BW but differing in age, were subsampled at slaughter to assess the effect of weaning age and chronological age on muscle tenderness. Younger animals had lower Warner-Bratzler shear force values (P < 0.001) than older calves after 14 d of postmortem aging; however, no differences were found in tenderness after 21 d of aging. Furthermore, there was greater variance (P < 0.001) in Warner-Bratzler shear force values among younger, EW steers vs. older, TW steers. These data provide evidence that early weaning of beef calves may be used as a tool to more effectively manage the cow-calf production system without compromising the quality of the offspring.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies to all life cycle stages of Eimeria bovis were used in an avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase test to examine extraintestinal tissues from experimentally infected calves for developmental stages of the parasite. First-generation meronts of Eimeria bovis were found in the mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) of three of four calves examined during the first 18 days of primary experimental infection. No extraintestinal stages were found in the MLNs of two calves examined 69 days after a primary infection or in five calves examined 6 months after a challenge infection. Tissue homogenates of liver, spleen, and MLNs from immune calves were not infectious for nonimmune recipient calves following oral or intraperitoneal inoculation indicating that infectious stages were not present in these extraintestinal tissues at the time of inoculations. Relapse of clinical coccidiosis and reoccurrence of oocyst shedding were not seen in E. bovis immune calves that were stressed by being put on a 16-week corticosteroid treatment program.  相似文献

We compared the therapeutic effect of three anticoccidial drugs (toltrazuril, sulphadimidine and amprolium) in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) calves experimentally infected with Eimeria bovis (E. bovis) and E. zuernii oocysts (3 x 104oocyst/calf). Buffalo calves (1.5-4 month old, 70-kg body weight) were randomly allocated into 3 groups (9 calves each). Group T was experimentally infected with oocysts and treated with toltrazuril (20 mg/kg BW twice orally at a 1-week interval). Group S was experimentally infected with oocysts and treated with sulphadimidine (125 mg/kg injected IM followed by half dose for 4 successive days). Group A was experimentally infected with oocysts and treated with amprolium (50 mg/kg orally for 7 successive days). Each group had three subgroups (three calves/subgroup) to represent timing of the drug administration: 1st day of coccidia infection (FD), onset of clinical signs of coccidiosis (CC), and onset of oocyst shedding into the faeces (OS). Clinical signs, body-weight gain (BWG) and number of oocysts per gram feces (OPG) were monitored daily for 35 days post-infection (DPI). The OPG were reduced (but the BWG was not different) in the T calves compared to S and A calves. Within the same group, treatment from the 1st day of infection reduced the OPG and increased the BWG compared to the later treatment timings.  相似文献

Young Holstein-Friesian bull calves were used in a controlled experiment to evaluate the efficacy of monensin against coccidiosis. The calves were given oocysts of Eimeria bovis and/or E. zurnii. Medication was started 3 days prior to inoculation and continued during the 30-day experimental period. Oocyst shedding was quantified prior to and throughout the experiment and demonstrated that monensin at the rate of 20 or 30 g ton-1 of feed significantly reduced oocyst shedding and clinical coccidiosis. Clinical infection with E. zurnii was very difficult to establish, even when calves were treated with 20 mg dexamethasone IM on Days 12, 15, and 16 post-inoculation.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate lasalocid as a coccidiostat in Holstein calves and to compare lasalocid with monensin and decoquinate. In experiment 1, calves in 3 groups (6 calves/group) were each inoculated with 500,000 sporulated oocysts, 88% of which were Eimeria bovis and 12% were E zuernii. Calves in each group were given lasalocid-medicated feed at 0.50 (group 3), 0.75 (group 4), or 1 mg/kg (group 5) of body weight/day for 45 days. Two control groups (6 calves/group) were also evaluated; calves in control group 2 were inoculated and nontreated, and calves in control group 1 were noninoculated and nontreated. At 0.50, 0.75, or 1 mg/kg/day, lasalocid was equally effective in preventing induced coccidiosis (E bovis and E zuernii) in calves. Compared with inoculated nontreated controls, treated calves had significantly (P less than 0.05) fewer oocysts in feces and had fewer clinical signs of coccidiosis from days 16 to 30 after inoculation. Experiment 2 was conducted to compare the effectiveness of monensin, lasalocid, and decoquinate for the prevention of experimentally induced coccidiosis. Calves (n = 48) were allotted into 4 groups (12 calves/group); each was inoculated orally with 275,000 sporulated oocysts, predominantly E bovis and E zuernii, and each was given nonmedicated feed (group 6) or feed medicated with 33 mg of lasalocid (group 7), decoquinate (group 8), or monensin (group 9)/kg of feed for 46 days. Calves given medicated rations had significantly (P less than 0.05) fewer oocysts in their feces and fewer clinical signs of coccidiosis than did calves given nonmedicated rations.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Clinical coccidiosis is associated with high fecal contamination and stress situations, mainly in animals under 1 year of age. Artificially fed dairy calves are one of the categories most prone to suffer from this parasitic disease. The study was carried out in a commercial dairy farm. Feces samples of heifer calves between 2 and 8 weeks old were taken monthly for oocyst counts and Eimeria spp. identification. Of the 862 feces samples analyzed, 48% presented oocysts. When grouping the results of monthly samplings of each age group, it was observed that this percentage increased in the group of calves between 20 and 40 days of life, reaching the peak average of 85% of infection prevalence in the group with between 26 and 30 days of age. The discharge of oocysts observed between 21 and 35 days of age was superior to the rest (p<0.05). This trend appeared every month throughout the whole year. However, during March, April, June, September and November, the curves in the group categories were higher than in the remaining months (p<0.05). Twelve Eimeria species were identified, being E. ellipsoidalis, E. bovis, E. zuernii and E. auburnensis those in highest numbers. E. ellipsoidalis had an important predominance in the opg composition, >75% up to 25 days of life (p<0.05). E. bovis reached peak values in the 26 and 30 days group (p<0.05), remaining without significant variations in the last stage of the artificial milk feeding period (approximately 60 days of life), when the oocyst counts were significantly low. Oocysts of E. auburnensis appeared in great proportion (46%) in the cultures later than the previous species (p<0.05), in calves of the age groups of between 46 and 50 days of age. Oocysts of E. zuernii showed no trend associated with age. The highest prevalence of infection and of oocyst values appeared during the periods with better environmental conditions for sporulation, survival and dispersion of oocysts (spring and autumn), coincident with the highest birth rates and an elevated number of calves in the paddock. Calves developed a process of natural "vaccination" against coccidiosis. This was demonstrated by the decrease in the quantity of animals shedding oocysts and in the number of oocysts eliminated at the end of the artificial milk feeding period.  相似文献

Eighteen female Holstein calves, raised as natural herd additions under conditions typical of a well-managed midwestern United States dairy farm, were used in a natural-exposure study to determine the anticoccidial efficacies of lasalocid and decoquinate. Calves were allotted to 6 treatment blocks of 3 calves each as they were weaned. Within each block, calves were randomly assigned to be given either lasalocid or decoquinate or to remain as a nonmedicated control. Calves were given medication for 90 days and remained separated from other calves for 120 days. Adjusted weight gains were consistently greater in calves that were given medication; however, differences were not statistically significant. Fecal specimens were obtained from calves at weekly intervals during the study. Overall, oocyst shedding was low. During the medication period, quantitative mean fecal shedding of oocysts was reduced eightfold in calves given decoquinate and four-fold in calves given lasalocid, as compared with nonmedicated control calves. During the period following the medication period, calves that had been controls shed fewer oocysts than did calves that had previously been given medication. A pairwise comparison of the proportion of specimens that were oocyst-positive was made to assess qualitative oocyst shedding among treatment groups. During the medication period, qualitative oocyst shedding (all species, Eimeria bovis, E zuernii, species other than E bovis and E zuernii) was greater in controls than in either lasalocid-or decoquinate-treated groups. Like-wise, lasalocid-medicated calves shed oocysts more frequently than did the decoquinate-medicated group. After medication, qualitative findings were reversed. Little diarrhea was noticed in treatment or control calves during the study.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A longitudinal cross-sectional time-series study was carried out to determine the prevalence of nasal mycoplasma carriage, serostatus and seroconversion, and to evaluate the associations between these parameters and health and performance in weaned beef calves during a 42-day feeding period. Nasal swabs and serum were collected on days 0 (arrival), 10, 42 and at the first incidence of bovine respiratory disease complex. The samples were evaluated for Mollicutes (by culture), Mycoplasma bovis (by PCR) and serum antibody to M. bovis. On day 0, 90.4 per cent of the calves were Mollicutes nasal culture-positive. The seroprevalence of M. bovis was 26.6 per cent on day 0 and 98.2 per cent by day 42 (P<0.05). Seroconversion to M. bovis between days 0 and 42 was significantly associated (P=0.04) with lower weight gain. Weight gain was greater in calves that were PCR-negative for M. bovis on day 10 (P=0.01). The percentage of calves seropositive to M. bovis increased throughout the study, indicating exposure and an immunological response to the organism. Although associations with health outcomes were not identified, seroconversion to M. bovis was associated with a decreased rate of weight gain during the study period.  相似文献

Male Holstein calves were each inoculated with 350,000 sporulated oocysts of Eimeria bovis. Two calves were given decoquinate (0.5 mg/kg of body weight) continuously in dry feed for 29 days, and 2 calves each were given 0.5, 1, or 1.5 mg of decoquinate/kg on an every 2nd-or 3rd-day schedule for 29 days. Calves given decoquinate continuously did not discharge oocysts but had slightly loose feces. In general, the number of oocysts discharged increased and fecal consistency decreased as the time between feeding of medicated feed increased. Calves given 0.5 or 1.5 mg of decoquinate/kg every 3rd day discharged more oocysts and had more diarrhea than did calves given 1 mg of decoquinate/kg every 3rd day. At postinoculation day 29, calves were euthanatized. At necropsy, intestinal tissues of calves given decoquinate were mostly normal. Apparently, reduced infections along with the elapsed time were sufficient to resolve most intestinal lesions caused by the coccidia. Decoquinate was most effective when fed continuously at 0.5 mg/kg. However, when fed at 1 or 1.5 mg of decoquinate/kg every 2nd day or 1.5 mg of decoquinate/kg every 3rd day, oocyst production was reduced and clinical coccidiosis was prevented.  相似文献

The efficacy of salinomycin for treatment of experimental Eimeria bovis infections was evaluated. In experiment 1, 18 calves were placed into four groups. Group 1 calves were nonmedicated controls; groups 2, 3, and 4 calves were given salinomycin (0.33, 0.66, and 1.00 mg/kg of body weight, respectively) in daily oral divided doses starting 2 or 3 days prior to E bovis inoculations and continuing until postinoculation day (PID) 21. Calves treated with 0.66 and 1.00 mg/kg (groups 3 and 4) passed substantially fewer oocysts than did control calves (group 1) or calves treated with 0.33 mg/kg (group 2). Group 1 control calves had typical signs of severe E bovis infections, whereas signs of infection in medicated calves were almost nonexistant. Experiment 2 was conducted as before, with 15 calves. Group 5 calves were nonmedicated controls; groups 6, 7, and 8 calves were treated with 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/kg, respectively. All group 8 calves and three of four group 7 calves had nearly complete suppression of oocyst excretions. The severity of the disease in the group 5 control calves was not as extensive as it was in group 1 control calves. In experiment 3, 16 calves were used. Group 9 calves were nonmedicated controls, whereas other calves were given salinomycin (2.0 mg/kg) during PID 3 to 7 (group 10), PID 8 to 12 (group 11), and PID 13 to 17 (group 12). Salinomycin therapy in group 2 calves resulted in substantial reductions in oocyst excretions and clinical signs.  相似文献

Effects of lasalocid on coccidial infection and on calf growth were examined in 16 Holstein bull calves. Calves were assigned randomly to a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of starter ration containing 0 or 40 mg of lasalocid/kg of starter, beginning when calves were 3 days old (SE = 0.046), and single oral inoculation with 0 or 30,000 sporulated oocysts (Eimeria bovis) at 28 days. Pelleted calf starter was fed ad libitum from day 1; milk replacer was fed at a rate of 3.6 kg/d until day 28. Mean daily gain, dry-matter intake, and body weight were increased in calves fed lasalocid and decreased in those inoculated with coccidia. Addition of lasalocid to the feed improved gains by 8% in uninoculated calves and by 50% in inoculated calves. Fecal oocyst numbers were reduced when lasalocid was fed to inoculated calves. Feces were more abnormal in calves inoculated with coccidia. Respiration rates, rectal temperatures, PCV, and serum sodium and potassium concentrations were unaffected by treatment. On the basis of findings in this study, lasalocid minimized effects of coccidial challenge inoculation and increased growth of calves.  相似文献

Newborn Holstein male calves were purchased within 3 days after birth and were removed from the local farms to the Dixon Springs Agricultural Research Center. They were hand-fed for 7 weeks and then weaned to a prepared feed. Eight groups, each of 4 calves, were housed in separate pens. In each of 4 pens (pens 2 to 5), 1 calf was inoculated with sporulated oocysts of Eimeria bovis (and was not medicated); 1 calf was inoculated and given feed with added monensin at the dosage level of 10 g/906 kg of feed; and 2 calves were inoculated and given medicated feed with added monensin at the dosage level of 20 g/906 kg or 30 g/906 kg. In the 4 other pens (6 to 9), the calves were inoculated with E zuernii and otherwise were given feed without or with added monensin as in pens 2 through 5. Another group of 5 calves (all kept in 1 pen), served as noninoculated, nonmedicated controls. At 14 days after inoculations with E bovis, the single calves in each of the 4 pens that were given the nonmedicated feed began to show clinical signs of coccidiosis and discharged increasing numbers of oocysts. The other inoculated calves (given monensin) had fewer clinical signs and discharged fewer oocysts in the feces as the level of medication in the feed increased. The calves inoculated with E zuernii developed only moderately severe infections when compared with those inoculated with E bovis. Inoculated (with E bovis) nonmedicated calves had severe reductions in feed consumption and weight, and 3 of 4 died.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Parenteral selenium and vitamin E supplementation of weaned beef calves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
BACKGROUND: The weaning process in beef calves elicits physiological stress responses that can negatively affect performance and health. Supplementation of vitamins and minerals, particularly selenium (Se) and vitamin E, might be warranted. HYPOTHESIS: That parenteral administration of Se or vitamin E would correct or prevent deficiencies of these nutrients in postweaned beef calves during a backgrounding period (42 days after weaning). ANIMALS: One hundred and forty-four weaned steers (200-250 kg) in 3 trials. METHODS: One trial was conducted with cattle on a dry lot fed a total mixed ration and 2 trials were conducted on cattle on pasture. Selenium was administered at 0.05 mg/kg BW (SC) and vitamin E was administered at 1500 IU on days 0 and 28 (SC). RESULTS: A treatment effect attributable to Se or vitamin E supplementation on average daily gain was not detected in any trials. Parenteral supplementation with Se on days 0 and 28 resulted in higher serum Se concentrations as compared with controls on day 42. Parenteral supplementation with Se on days 0 and 28 improved Se status from marginal to adequate in 1 trial. Parenteral supplementation with vitamin E did not improve serum vitamin E concentrations in any experiment. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Supplementation with vitamin E or Se or a combination of both did not have a significant effect on calf performance during the 42-day backgrounding period.  相似文献

The roles of helminths and coccidia in post-weaning diarrhoea in beef calves in the dry tropics were investigated. Diarrhoea occurred approximately one month after weaning in both anthelmintic treated and untreated calves. The highest numbers of coccidial oocysts were seen 29 days after weaning and 3 necropsies confirmed Eimeria zuernii coccidiosis. In the absence of wet overcrowded conditions, disease may have been precipitated by environmental interactions leading to suppression of host immunity. Other Eimeria identified were E. bukidnonensis, E. wyomingensis, E. bovis, E. auburnensis, E. cylindrica, E. ellipsoidalis and E. subspherica. The last 5 species are believed not to have been previously documented in Australia. The presence of E. canadensis was strongly suspected.  相似文献

A 42-day broiler floor pen study was conducted comparing the anticoccidial efficacy of toltrazuril (Baycox) as a stand alone treatment and as an additional treatment to in-feed anticoccidial programs. Toltrazuril was administered on days 18 and 19 in the drinking water at 7 mg/kg of body weight. The treatments were 125 ppm nicarbazin (days 0-14) to 66 ppm salinomycin (SAL) (days 15-35) with and without toltrazuril, SAL (days 0-35) with and without toltrazuril, nonmedicated (NM) to SAL with toltrazuril, and NM with and without toltrazuril. The controls were NM noninfected and infected. The treatments were replicated in five blocks of eight pens each in a randomized complete block design. All withdrawal feed was nonmedicated. On day 14, birds, except noninfected, were exposed to coccidial oocysts (Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria maxima, and Eimeria tenella) seeded litter. On days 21, 28, 35, and 42, birds and feed were weighed, four birds per pen were coccidial lesion scored, and litter oocyst counts were performed. The coccidial infection in the NM infected treatment caused a significant (P < 0.05) coccidiosis infection. Coccidiosis was moderately controlled in the anticoccidial treatment birds without toltrazuril. Performance in the NM with toltrazuril was equal to or better (P < 0.05) than the anticoccidial programs without toltrazuril. Toltrazuril was equal to the noninfected birds in performance. Toltrazuril most completely eliminated all coccidial lesions and dramatically reduced oocyst shedding. The performance data, lesion scores, and oocyst counts showed that a 2-day treatment with toltrazuril successfully controlled the coccidiosis with no relapse of infection. Toltrazuril can thus be used for supplemental control with in-feed anticoccidials or as a primary anticoccidial with nonmedicated feed.  相似文献

Faecal Eimeria oocyst excretion and levels of antibodies to first generation merozoite antigen of E. bovis in sera and colostra were followed in 86 and 70 cow-calf pairs in northern (group EF) and central Germany (group H), respectively, over periods of 3 weeks before to 3 weeks after calving in cows and from birth to an age of 63 days in calves. Oocysts were found in 30 and 7.7% of cows in groups EF and H, respectively. They belonged to 10 (group EF) and four Eimeria spp. (group H) with E. bovis, E. ellipsoidalis, E. auburnensis and E. zuerni as the most frequently occurring species. Prevalence and intensity of oocyst excretion varied with time resulting in peak values around the date of parturition, particularly in the case of E. bovis. Peak values at the time of parturition were also seen in case of strongyle egg excretion. Seven (group H) and nine Eimeria spp. (group EF) were found in the calves. The predominant species E. ellipsoidalis, E. zuerni, E. bovis and E. auburnensis were detected for the first time earlier after birth (3-5 weeks) than the others. The prevalence of Eimeria infections increased to 67.1% (group EF) and 50.1% (group H) 9 weeks after birth. Specific IgM and IgA antibody levels (the latter only determined in group EF) in cow sera remained almost constant throughout the observation period, whereas IgG(1) and IgG(2) levels were reduced at the time of parturition. Levels of specific antibodies in sera and colostra were significantly correlated. Except IgM antibodies, significant inverse correlations were found in cows between intensity of infection with E. bovis and specific serum IgG (group H) and IgG(2) (group EF) antibodies. Antibodies to E. bovis were detected in calves sera only after colostrum intake with significant correlations between levels in calves sera and colostra. Levels decreased, starting within the first week of life (most conspicuously in case of IgM and IgA) until the third week. Subsequently, but except IgG(1) antibody concentrations increased until the end of the observation period. Interrelations between antibody levels and the total amount of E. bovis oocysts excreted by the calves until the ninth week of life varied with the age of the animals. Inverse relationships in the first 3 weeks of life as suggested by negative correlation coefficients could not be proven statistically. Thus, there is no unambiguous proof for immunoprotection of calves against E. bovis via maternal immunity. Considering antibody levels in the 3-9 weeks old calves significant direct correlations with E. bovis oocyst excretion were found in case of IgM, IgG(2) and IgA, reflecting an active immune response of young calves to coccidial infection.  相似文献

Sixteen bull calves were born in the Spanish Central Pyrenees in spring. They were either early (EW, 90 days of age) or normal weaned (NW, 180 days of age). At day 90, EW calves were placed on an intensive diet while NW calves were turned out with their dams to high mountain pastures. After summer, at day 180, NW calves were weaned and placed with EW calves on a common finishing diet until slaughter at the fixed age of 1 year. From birth to early weaning date, no performance differences appeared. However, EW calves gained faster (1.549 kg/day) than their unweaned counterparts (0.783 kg/day) from early to normal weaning date (P < 0.001). During the finishing period, NW calves showed compensatory growth, with a 44% higher ADG than EW calves (P < 0.001), with a similar feed intake and a better feed conversion ratio. Early weaned calves had a longer fattening phase than NW calves (264 vs. 158 days, respectively; P < 0.001) and thus total feed intake and feed costs were greater. When slaughtered at 1 year of age, EW and NW calves attained similar weight (489 vs. 510 kg, respectively; P > 0.05), but dressing percentage was higher for EW calves (56.9%) than for NW calves (55.2%) (P < 0.01), which led EW calves to have heavier carcasses, without differences in fat score or conformation. The different growth paths, the result of weaning management, did not affect meat tenderness, chemical composition and fatty acid profile, but affected meat lightness, with higher values for compensating calves (NW) than calves in continuous growth (EW). In conclusion, advancing weaning age modified calf performance without affecting substantially carcass characteristics, except for an improvement in dressing percentage, or meat quality.  相似文献

The long-term effects of a toltrazuril treatment against natural Eimeria bovis and/or Eimeria zuernii infections were investigated in comparison with diclazuril and untreated controls on two dairy (Italian Friesian breed) and two beef (Chianina breed) farms. At each trial site, 30 calves were allocated into three groups of 10 calves each: T (treated with toltrazuril), D (treated with diclazuril) and C (left untreated). For 40 weeks post-treatment, the calves were weighed and examined clinically and parasitologically. The oocyst counts as well as the number of scour days were significantly lower in the T group than in the D and C groups. Final bodyweights and body condition scores of the T group exceeded those of groups C and D. The results confirmed that toltrazuril was highly efficacious, safe and provided productive benefits in dairy and beef calves.  相似文献

Mature dams representing Hereford, Red Poll, F1 Hereford x Red Poll, F1 Red Poll x Hereford, F1 Angus x Hereford, F1 Angus x Charolais, F1 Brahman x Hereford and F1 Brahman x Angus breed types were evaluated. All cows were bred to Limousin sires to produce two-way or three-way-cross progeny. Mature Brahman x Hereford dams produced a higher (P less than .05) percentage of live calves than Herefords, but dam breed differences in percentage of calves weaned relative to the number of cows exposed for mating were not statistically significant. Progeny of Angus x Charolais and Red Poll dams were outstanding in weaning weight, but Hereford and Brahman-cross calves were below average. Planned comparisons showed that Angus x Charolais calves were heavier (P less than .01) at weaning than Hereford (23.0 +/- 3.8 kg) or Angus x Hereford (9.6 +/- 3.2 kg) progeny. Mature Angus x Hereford mothers weaned heavier calves than did Brahman x Herefords (7.4 +/- 3.2 kg, P less than .05) or Brahman x Angus (10.9 +/- 3.0 kg, P less than .01). Analysis of the Hereford-Red Poll diallel showed evidence of maternal heterosis in calf weaning weight (4.0 +/- 2.6 kg, P less than .05), but there was no difference in the percentage of calves weaned by crossbred vs straightbred dams.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
