Ivermectin (300 micrograms/kg of body weight) was given to swine subcutaneously in the neck to test its efficacy against the kidney worm, Stephanurus dentatus. Two separate field trials were conducted using 146 swine (40 males and 106 females). Urine was obtained before and after treatment and was examined for presence of S dentatus eggs. Stephanurus dentatus eggs were quantitated in positive samples. All treated swine positive for S dentatus eggs in the pretreatment urine samples (n = 54) were negative by 14 to 21 days after treatment with ivermectin. Adverse reactions caused by ivermectin injection were not noticed.  相似文献

Twenty calves with naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematode infections were assigned to 10 replicates of 2 calves each and were treated with febantel paste (5 mg/kg of body weight, PO) or an equivalent volume of paste vehicle (control calves). Adverse reactions were not observed after febantel treatment. At necropsy, gastrointestinal nematode counts in febantel-treated calves, compared with control calves, were reduced by over 99% for all major species except Trichuris discolor, counts of which were reduced by only 69%. Counts of gastrointestinal nematode eggs in feces of febantel-treated calves were reduced by 100% after treatment.  相似文献

The efficacy of netobimin (Coded SCH 32481, Schering Corporation) in removing naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematode infections was evaluated in 10 treated and 10 untreated (control) yearling beef heifers. The anthelmintic was administered as an oral drench at a dose level of 7.5 mg kg-1 body weight. Fecal egg per gram (EPG) counts were reduced with netobimin by 98% (P less than or equal to 0.01) at both 1 and 2 weeks post-treatment (PT). The compound was highly effective in removing Oesophagostomum radiatum (100% at P less than or equal to 0.01), Cooperia spp. (97.66% at P less than or equal to 0.01) and Nematodirus helvetianus (100%, although not significant), but was ineffective against immature Ostertagia ostertagi (3.19%) and only moderately effective against adult forms (66.14% at P less than or equal to 0.05). The low efficacy against adult O. ostertagi was partially attributed to the maturation of fourth-stage larvae, not removed by the 7.5 mg kg-1 treatment, during the 14-day treatment-slaughter interval. Efficacy against Trichuris spp. could not be evaluated due to low levels and unequal numbers of worms recovered in the groups. The overall efficacy against adult species, excluding Trichuris spp., was 67.40% (P less than or equal to 0.05). No adverse reactions or signs of toxicosis were observed in heifers treated with netobimin.  相似文献

The broad-spectrum anthelmintic efficacy of netobimin (SCH 32481, Schering Corporation) was evaluated using 30 cross-bred spring lambs with naturally acquired infections of gastrointestinal nematodes. Three groups of 10 animals each were allotted into either control (given a tap water drench as a placebo) or 7.5 and 20 mg kg-1 dosage groups (given the netobimin as an oral drench). Seven to fourteen days post-treatment, animals were necropsied and nematodes recovered by standard techniques. Examination of fecal samples taken on dates of necropsy showed median egg production was reduced in treated animals (61.98% with 7.5 mg kg-1 and 100% with 20 mg kg-1). The compound was highly effective in removal of adult nematodes representing a number of genera and species of trichostrongyloids at the 7.5 and 20 mg kg-1 dose levels (shown, respectively, below). These included Ostertagia spp., with O. circumcincta, O. trifurcata, O. ostertagi and Teladorsagia davtiani (96.20%; 100%), Trichostrongylus spp., with T. axei, T. vitrinus and T. colubriformis (100%; 98.72%), Nematodirus spp., with N. spathiger, N. filicollis and N. battus (100% both levels) and Haemonchus contortus (100% both levels). High efficacies against other species of nematodes (at both dose levels) were not statistically significant (Cooperia spp., Chabertia ovina and Oesophagostomum venulosum). At 20 mg kg-1, netobimin significantly reduced populations of early and late fourth stage larvae of Ostertagia spp. by 100%. The overall efficacy (all life stages included) was 90.16% at 7.5 mg kg-1 and 98.77% at 20 mg kg-1 dose levels. No adverse reactions or signs of toxicosis were observed.  相似文献

Anthelmintic efficacy of moxidectin, an experimental antiparasitic macrocyclic lactone, was evaluated in a group of 15 calves harboring naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematodes. Three groups of 5 calves each served as untreated controls (group 1) or principals that were given moxidectin PO at the rate of 0.2 mg/kg (group 2) or 0.4 mg/kg (group 3) of body weight. Equal numbers of control and treated calves were necropsied for parasite recovery on days 10 (3 control and 3 of each treatment group) and 11 (2 control and 2 of each treatment group) after treatment. Efficacies at both doses were greater than 99.8 and 99.9% against active and inhibited larvae and adults of Ostertagia spp, respectively. The overall mean efficacy of each dose was greater than 99.9%.  相似文献

A pig was in left lateral recumbency with limb spasticity, accentuated prostration, and strabismus, and was euthanized. During autopsy, yellowing of the leptomeninges at the ventral pons to medulla oblongata was noted. In the cerebellar peduncles, there was a focally extensive black-to-yellow area at the level of the vestibular nuclei. Histologic examination revealed a cross-section of a nematode larva, consistent with Stephanurus dentatus, bordered by edema and marked infiltration of mononuclear cells, plasma cells, and a few eosinophils. Vacuolation of the neuropil, with rare gitter cells and axonal spheroids, was also observed. We diagnosed parasitic encephalitis caused by S. dentatus migration based on the pathology findings and characterization of the parasite.  相似文献

The strategic use of closantel, a narrow-spectrum salicylanilide anthelmintic against bloodsucking helminths, and of albendazole, a broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic, in the control of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep was investigated on a farm in Nyandarua District in the highlands of Kenya. Thirty Corriedale female lambs aged between 9 and 12 months were assigned to three treatment groups of 10 lambs each. The three groups were set stocked on separate paddocks for 12 months. Lambs in group 1 (strategic treatment group) were treated with closantel and albendazole at the beginning and towards the end of the long rains (April and June, respectively) and towards the end of the short rains (December). During the intervening dry season, the lambs were treated with albendazole. Lambs in group 2 (suppressive treatment group) were kept worm free by regular deworming with albendazole at 3-weekly intervals for 12 months. The third group of lambs remained untreat ed (control group). Gastrointestinal nematode infections and pasture infectivity were well controlled in the case of the strategic treatment group. This resulted in higher weight gains, wool production, packed cell volume, and serum albumin and protein concentrations compared with the untreated control lambs. These parameters were comparable between the strategic treatment and the suppressive treatment groups of lambs. It was concluded that worm control strategies based on the epidemiology of the parasites and the sustained anthelmintic action of closantel in combination with broad-spectrum anthelmintics can provide effective control of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep in the study area.  相似文献

The goal of the current experiment was to assess the clinical efficacy of oxfendazole (OFZ) administered as a single oral dose (30 mg/kg) to pigs naturally parasitized with Ascaris suum, Oesophagostomum spp., Metastrongylus spp. and Trichuris suis. Thirty-six local ecotype piglets were divided into three independent experiments, named I, II and III (n = 12 each), respectively. Each experiment involved two different groups (n = 6): Untreated Control and OFZ treated. Animals were naturally parasitized with A. suum (Experiments I, II and III), Oesophagostomum spp. (Experiments I and II), T. suis (Experiments II and III) and Metastrongylus spp. (Experiment I). Pigs in the treated group received OFZ (Synanthic®, Merial Ltd., 9.06% suspension) orally at 30 mg/kg dose. At five (5) days post-treatment, animals were sacrificed and the clinical efficacy of the OFZ treatment was established following the currently available WAAVP guidelines for a controlled efficacy test. None of the animals involved in this experiment showed any adverse events during the study. OFZ treatment given as a single 30 mg/kg oral dose showed a 100% efficacy against all the nematode parasites present in the three experiments. In conclusion, under the current experimental conditions, OFZ orally administered to naturally parasitized piglets at a single dose of 30 mg/kg was safe and highly efficacious (100%) against adult stages of A. suum, Oesophagostomum spp., T. suis and Metastrongylus spp.  相似文献

The efficacy of an oral formulation of ivermectin plus praziquantel in the reduction of nematode and cestode egg counts in horses was assessed in 273 horses under field conditions at 15 sites in North America (n = 6) and Europe (n = 9). Horses were confirmed by fecal examination to have natural infections of strongyles (100%) and tapeworms (76%). Replicates of four horses were formed at each site, and in each replicate three animals received ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg body weight) plus praziquantel (1 mg/kg body weight) oral paste and one animal remained untreated or received vehicle paste. Fecal samples were collected for fecal nematode and cestode egg counting before and 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, and 16 days after treatment. Horses treated with ivermectin plus praziquantel oral paste had significantly (P <.01) lower posttreatment strongylid and cestode egg counts (reductions of 98% or more) than controls. Combined site analyses revealed that 95% or 96% of the horses positive for cestode eggs before treatment that were treated with ivermectin plus praziquantel were negative for cestode eggs at each posttreatment fecal examination. No adverse reactions attributable to ivermectin plus praziquantel oral paste treatments were observed. The results of the studies demonstrated that ivermectin plus praziquantel paste was highly effective in reducing egg shedding by gastrointestinal nematodes and cestodes, and no adverse reactions were observed in horses treated under field conditions.  相似文献

The efficacy of a topical formulation of ivermectin against naturally acquired gastro-intestinal nematodes in weaner cattle was evaluated. At slaughter, 14-15 days after treatment, burdens of Ostertagia spp, Trichostrongylus axei and Oesophagostomum radiatum were significantly lower in the treated calves than in the untreated controls (p<0.01). Efficacies (based on geometric mean worm burdens of treated and control groups) were 99.6%, 95.1% and 100% respectively. The sizes of the Cooperia spp and Trichuris ovis burdens in the treated group did not differ significantly at the 5% level of confidence from those in the control group.  相似文献

Studies were carried out to determine the therapeutic efficacy of doramectin, administered intramuscularly at a dose of 300 microg/kg live weight, against naturally acquired helminths of extensively farmed Iberian pigs. The first study (slaughter study) evaluated, through necropsy of the study animals, the product's efficacy against gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes (Ascaris suum, Oesophagostomum dentatum and Metastrongylus sp.) whilst the second, faecal egg count reduction study, (FECR study) evaluated the drug's efficacy only against gastrointestinal helminths (A. suum, Trichuris suis and Oesophagostomum sp.).The first study used 20 animals divided into two equal groups of 10 on the basis of body weight and faecal egg count. One group constituted saline treated controls and the other was doramectin treated. On Day 14 post treatment half of the animals in each group were necropsied and the number of parasites present counted. On Day 15 the remaining half of each group underwent the same procedure. The second study was carried out with 40 animals divided equally into two groups of 20. This study determined the effect of doramectin treatment on faecal egg counts as an indicator of parasite burden.The first study demonstrated an efficacy of 100% against adult Metastrongylus sp. and A. suum, whilst the efficacy against O.dentatum was 96.3%. The second study indicated that at Day 21 post treatment there was a 100% reduction in egg counts in faeces in comparison to untreated controls.  相似文献

A combination of pyrantel tartrate (106 mg/kg of body weight) and carbadox (55 mg/kg of body weight) in ground feed was fed to 20 weaned pigs (av wt, 14.4 kg) for 42 days. Another group of 20 pigs included nontreated controls. The pigs were farrowed and suckled in a slat-floored farrowing house and had minimal exposure to the small intestinal threadworm (Stronglyoides ransomi) until they were placed on severely contaminated dirt lots at the start of the experiment. Five pigs from each of the two groups were necropsied on day 42. Carbadox was withheld from the feed for the 15 remaining treated pigs. All other pigs were necropsied when they attained market weight, 72 to 83 days layer. Treated pigs killed at market weight had 44% fewer (P less than 0.10) kidneyworms (Stephanurus dentatus) than did control pigs. A 17% increase (P less than 0.01) in the weights of livers of control pigs when compared with treated market-weight pigs was associated with an increase of fibrotic hepatic tissue of control pigs. Worm infections were reduced in the treated market-weight pigs: by 96% (P less than 0.05) for the large roundworm (Ascaris suum), 77% (P less than 0.01) for nodular worms (Oesophagostomum spp), and 64% (P less than 0.01) for the intestinal threadworm. There was some evidence for prophylaxis in market-weight pigs (P less than 0.10) against lungworms (Metastrongylus spp), but none against the whipworm (Trichuris suis) or thick stomach worms (Ascarops strongylina and Physocephalus sexalatus). Pigs given the pyrantel tartrate in feed until attaining market weight maintained a feed-to-gain ratio superior (7.1%) to that of nontreated pigs.  相似文献

A controlled test was performed to titrate the anthelmintic dosage of dienbendazole in 24 mixed-breed ponies naturally infected with Strongylus vulgaris, S edentatus, and small strongyle species, as determined by parasitic egg and larval counts in feces. Comparison of results of treatment was made among 3 dienbendazole dosages--2.5, 5, and 10 mg/kg of body weight--and a gum (excipient) mixture given by nasogastric intubation. All ponies were euthanatized and necropsied at 7 or 8 days after treatment. Trichostrongylus axei, Habronema muscae, S vulgaris, S edentatus, small strongyles, and Oxyuris equi were efficaciously eliminated in response to all doses of dienbendazole; Gasterophilus spp were not affected by any dose. There were not sufficient numbers of Draschia megastoma, Anoplocephala spp, or Parascaris equorum in the ponies to evaluate drug effect. Changes in the appearance of the intestinal lining were dose-dependent; in the ponies treated with 5 and 10 mg of dienbendazole/kg, the mucosa appeared clean and smooth, though in ponies given 2.5 mg/kg, it appeared clean, but was nodular and moderately reactive to embedded immature small strongyles. In the gum mixture-treated ponies, the large intestinal mucosa was inflamed, with edematous areas, in response to infections caused by large and small strongyles. A limited clinical titration was done in 12 ponies that were fecal culture negative for S vulgaris larvae, although other strongyles were detected. Two ponies in each of 6 groups were given the following dosages: 0 (gum mixture only), 0.5, 1, 2.5, and 5 mg of dienbendazole/kg. Oxfendazole doses at a rate of 5 mg per kg, before or after lambing, reduced nematode egg output to insignificant levels in ewes, most of which were not exposed to re-infection. Ewes treated with oxfendazole had a significantly lower egg output than those treated with levamisole, although the latter anthelmintic was also highly effective. In lambs, oxfendazole at a dose rate of 5 mg per kg, showed 100 per cent efficacy for Ostertagia circumcincta, O trifurcata, Teledorsagia davtiani, Trichostrongylus axei, T vitrinus, T colubriformis, Nematodirus battus, N filicollis, immature Nematodirus, Chabertia ovina, and 93 per cent efficacy for Trichuris spp. Levamisole showed similar efficacies but did not remove Trichuris.  相似文献

Weight loss, stunted growth, and death caused by gastrointestinal parasites are major constraints to livestock productivity, especially in tropical and developing countries where regular use, and misuse, of anthelmintics has led to nematode resistance. Albizia anthelmintica Brong. (Fabaceae) is traditionally employed throughout East Africa to treat helminth parasitosis in livestock. Reported efficacy has varied from 90% against mixed nematodes to just 19% against Haemonchus contortus alone. The objective of this study was to assess the anthelmintic effect of A. anthelmintica against naturally occurring infections of mixed gastrointestinal parasites, and to establish an effective treatment dose, in sheep under pastoral field conditions of northern Uganda. A. anthelmintica bark was collected and prepared according to local custom and packed into gel capsules. Fifty-five young female local mixed-breed lambs were randomly assigned to six groups, including a positive control group that received levamisole (synthetic anthelmintic) and a negative control group that received no treatment. Following the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP) dose determination guidelines, the other four groups were treated with varying doses of A. anthelmintica. Statistical analyses (using generalized linear models) were performed to assess treatment effect. There was a significant treatment (group) effect on parasite egg/oocyte counts per gram (EPG) for nematodes, but not for coccidia. The most effective dose against nematodes (0.8g, 58.7mg/kg) closely approximates what is usually given by traditional healers, 0.9g/adult sheep. It provided major and significant reduction in EPG as compared to the negative control. Anthelmintic efficacy was estimated using percent faecal egg count reduction (FECR). Other than the positive control, animals in the standard dose group showed the greatest decline in shedding of nematode eggs, with an FECR of 78%. This study indicates that A. anthelmintica holds potential as part of an integrated management plan for the control of helminths in developing countries.  相似文献
