Three anthelmintic pastes were compared in terms of their ability to suppress the output of parasite eggs in the faeces of 108 grazing horses at four sites in Britain; the horses were treated once with either ivermectin, fenbendazole or pyrantel. At each site, the horses grazed together throughout the trials which took place during the summers of 1985 and 1986. The median periods before parasite eggs reappeared in faeces were 70 days for ivermectin, 14 days for fenbendazole and 39 days for pyrantel embonate. Geometric mean faecal egg counts in the groups treated with ivermectin and pyrantel were significantly less (P less than 0.05) than in the fenbendazole group on days 21, 28, 35 and 42 after treatment. On days 49, 56, 63 and 70 the mean egg counts in the ivermectin group were significantly lower (P less than 0.05) than those in either of the other groups. The results indicated that in order to ensure minimal contamination of pastures, grazing horses treated with ivermectin paste would have required a second treatment approximately 10 weeks after the first, and to achieve similar control with fenbendazole or pyrantel embonate, a second treatment would have been required after approximately two weeks and six weeks, respectively.  相似文献

A field evaluation of anthelmintics in horses in Sweden   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A field evaluation of anthelmintics in 336 horses on 37 farms was conducted between February and May 1986 in Sweden. The herds, each comprising at least eight horses, had histories of grazing on permanent pastures and receiving regular treatments against parasites at least three times a year. Small strongyles were refractory to (pro)-benzimidazole drugs in all but one of 23 herds examined. There was an average reduction in egg output of approximately 60%, and approximately 30% of 205 horses examined were shedding less than 100 eggs g-1 7 days after treatment. There was great between-herd variation of both the faecal egg-count depression (6.4-90.4%) and drug efficacy (0.0-80.0%). The non-benzimidazole drugs under investigation were fully effective against mature small strongyles.  相似文献

Vitamin E is essential for neuromuscular function. The primary treatment, oral supplementation with natural (‘RRR’) α-tocopherol, is not effective in all horses. The objectives of this pilot study were to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a subcutaneously administered RRR-α-tocopherol preparation. Horses were randomly assigned in a cross-over design to initially receive RRR-α-tocopherol (5000 IU/450 kg of 600 IU/mL) subcutaneously (n = 3) or orally (n = 3) or were untreated sentinels (n = 2). Tissue reactions following injection in Phase I of the study necessitated adjustment of the preparation with reduction of the RRR-α-tocopherol concentration to 500 IU/mL in Phase 2. Following an 8-week washout period, horses received the reciprocal treatment route with the new preparation (5000 IU/450 kg of 500 IU/mL). Serum, CSF and muscle α-tocopherol concentrations were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography over a 14-day period during each phase. Serum and CSF α-tocopherol concentrations increased significantly postinjection only when the 500 IU/mL product was administered (P<0.0001). There was no significant difference in the muscle concentration of α-tocopherol following either treatment. All eight horses had marked tissue reaction to subcutaneous injection, regardless of product concentration. Whilst we have demonstrated that this route may be a useful alternative to oral supplementation, the marked tissue reaction makes use of such products limited at this time to only the most refractory of cases.  相似文献

Objective To compare the efficacy of moxidectin to ivermectin, oxibendazole and morantel against some gastrointestinal nematodes in horses.
Design Faecal egg count reduction after treatment.
Procedure A farm was selected where the population of small strongyles in horses was known to be resistant to oxibendazole. Horses were allocated to treatment groups based on faecal egg counts. After treatment, faecal samples were taken up to 109 days after treatment and faecal egg counts estimated. Faecal cultures were used to estimate the contribution of small and large strongyles to the faecal egg counts at each sampling.
Results Moxidectin (0.4 mg/kg) suppressed faecal egg counts for 109 days after treatment in most horses compared to 40 days with ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg), 13 days with morantel (9.4 mg/kg) and less than 13 days with oxibendazole (10 mg/kg). Most of the faecal egg count was attributable to small strongyles based on faecal culture, although Strongylus vulgaris was present in some samples in low numbers. Oxibendazole resistance in small strongyles was confirmed and a less than expected efficacy of morantel was also seen.
Conclusion Moxidectin was highly effective in reducing faecal egg counts after treatment for at least 12 weeks and up to 16 weeks in most horses. These horses were infected with a population of small strongyles known to be resistant to oxibendazole and possibly morantel. The duration of the reduction in faecal egg counts after treatment with moxidectin (0.4 mg/kg) was at least twice that of ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg) and greater than four times that for morantel and oxibendazole.  相似文献

The efficacy of ivermectin, fenbendazole, pyrantel pamoate and doramectin was evaluated under field conditions at 2 sites in the Free State Province of South Africa. The study involved 25 horses at each site, divided into 5 groups of equal size. Ivermectin, fenbendazole and pyrantel pamoate were administered orally at doses of 0.2, 10 and 19 mg/kg respectively. Doramectin was administered by intramuscular injection at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg. Treatment efficacy was based on the mean faecal egg count reduction 14 days post treatment. At site A a faecal egg count reduction of 100% was found after treatment with ivermectin, fenbendazole and doramectin. A 96.1% reduction was found after treatment with pyrantel pamoate. At site B ivermectin and doramectin produced a 100% reduction in faecal egg counts, fenbendazole produced an 80.8% reduction and pyrantel pamoate a 94.1% reduction. Doramectin produced a 100% reduction in faecal egg counts at both sites, despite not being registered for use in horses. In addition, the results indicated reduced efficacy of fenbendazole at site B, which suggested benzimidazole resistance. Larval cultures showed that cyathostomes accounted for between 86 and 96% of pre-treatment parasite burdens at both sites. Other helminths identified in the faecal samples were Strongylus spp. and Trichostrongylus axei.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to characterize and establish the kinematic standards of Italian standardbred trotter horses in real racing conditions. Certain parameters, such as the angles of both front and hind fetlock joints, stride length, stride frequency and average speed in youngs and adults are presented, examinated and compared with statistical tests. The angles and stride length were obtained using ONTRACK software over frames extracted from two CANON MV630i digital videocameras. For the stride frequency, a third identical videocamera filmed the horses to count the number of beats per minute. The average speed was calculated by multiplying the stride frequency by the stride length and transforming the result into kilometers per hour. The data reveal that as speed increases, younger horses have more extended fetlock joints than adults. Contrary to this, at the maximum speed (hereafter referred to as sprint speed) the adults increase both their stride frequency and stride length, while young horses increase stride frequency and decrease stride length. We think that the knowledge of these parameters in competition breeds could have potential relevance as they may reveal early indicators of the development of proper and adequate characteristics in young horses of those breeds.  相似文献

One hundred-twenty horses and ponies ranging in age from 142 days to 23 years were used to assess the efficacy and acceptability of ivermectin liquid for horses when given as an oral drench or by nasogastric intubation. Prior to treatment, animals in this study were found to have eggs in the feces of one or more of the following: strongyle type, Parascaris equorum, and Strongyloides westeri. While egg parasite per gram (EPG) numbers from 30 untreated controls remained consistently positive over a 14 day period, parasite EPG numbers from animals treated on Day 0 were reduced to 0 by day 14 as determined by a modified McMaster technique.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine basic kinematic parameters (linear, temporal and angular) in young and adult Andalusian horses (P.R.E.) at the trot, using a normal computer-aided videography system. The trotting gaits of 16 horses were analysed: seven young horses (3.7 +/- 0.2 years old, height at withers 167.1 +/- 4.1 cm) and nine adult stallions (12.3 +/- 2.9 years old, height at withers 162.9 +/- 3.6 cm) were recorded at least 6 times at the trot using a 25-Hz video-camera filming from the side. Video images were processed with a real-time digital system (SMVD). Speeds averaged 3.84 and 3.75 m/s for young and adult horses, respectively. Differences between age groups for speed and linear and temporal parameters of the stride were not significant. However, variations in angular parameters were detected: adults showed a greater ARM than younger horses for most forelimb joints. In the hind limb, hip, stifle, and, to a lesser degree, the tarsal joint, a smaller degree of extension during the stance phase was observed in adult horses.  相似文献

A clinical trial to determine the efficacy of clenbuterol for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) horses was conducted. Following a research protocol established by Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, Inc., the compound was tested in a blind control trial on twelve horses. The horses were subjectively evaluated and given an objective score during an initial 5-day acclimation period and at 7-day intervals during a 21-day treatment regimen.

In the statistical summation, 5 out of 6 horses receiving clenbuterol did improve whereas 6 out of 6 horses receiving the placebo did not improve. Statistically it appears that more horses improved after administration of clenbuterol but clinically, the degree of improvement was not considered sufficient to return the horses back to normal athletic performance. Further investigation of clenbuterol's efficacy and usefulness as an adjunct therapy in equine respiratory diseases would be warranted.  相似文献

The effect of three commonly used anthelmintics, levamisole hydrochloride, ivermectin and closantel, on the development of the sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, was determined. Sheep were treated with each anthelmintic using the manufacturers' recommended dose for helminth control. Both ivermectin and closantel significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the growth rate of larvae of L cuprina cultured in vitro on serum from these sheep. Levamisole hydrochloride had no effect. Ivermectin was effective for less than 6 days after treatment, whereas closantel significantly reduced larval growth 21 days after treatment. Dose-response experiments showed that lower concentrations of both ivermectin and closantel were not as effective in reducing larval growth.  相似文献

Parafilariosis was first described in South Africa in 1964, thereafter being discovered at numerous localities in the country. When it became obvious that Parafilaria bovicola, for which no treatment was known, caused considerable economic losses, trials involving a series of compounds were conducted to identify candidate remedies. This paper describes an anthelmintic test for evaluating the efficacy of compounds for registration for field use. Recovery of Parafilaria worms is impractical for anthelmintic testing, and consequently the lesion sizes of treated and control groups of cattle are compared statistically, using appropriate statistical tests. The seasonal incidence of mature worm infection in cattle in South Africa is such that trials should commence after June and be completed before the end of January, allowing a lapse of 70 days between treatment and slaughter for resolution of the lesions. The presently available parafilaricidal compounds while of value for treating slaughter stock, when used alone will probably not be effective for control of infection in the field.  相似文献

Three hundred and three horses, exported from Iceland to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland or Germany were tested for their distribution of leucocyte antigens. One hundred and thirty-six horses were affected with summer eczema. The panel of sera recognised the internationally accepted ELA-specificities A 1 to A10, and the nine work shop specificities W 11 to W 15 and W 18 to W 21. Also, some local specificities, characterised in Switzerland (Be I, Be III, Be 8, Be 25, Be 26, Be 27), and two non major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-linked antigens (Ely 1:1, Ely 2) were included. Only one antigen, Be 8, gave a statistically significant difference in distribution between the two populations: Relative risk = 2.5, x2 = 10.11, corrected P less than 0.01.  相似文献
