Erratum

The correct legend for the cover of the 31 March 1978 issue of Science is as follows: Hindfoot prints of a 6-hydroxydopamine-treated rat. Although typically akinetic when it is induced to walk by atropine, the rat's gait is characterized by short steps that may be analogous to that of some Parkinson patients. Here the rat has just been placed on the ground, where it first assumed a broad base of support with the hind legs, then brought its feet closer together and walked forward. In the article " ;Nuclear winter' from Gulf war discounted," by Eliot Marshall (News & Comment, 25 Jan., p. 372), Tica Novakov's affiliation should have been given as the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, not the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The concentrations of airborne soot reported at various locations should have been given as follows: for greater Los Angeles (summer), a daily average of 5 micrograms per cubic meter; Beijing (winter), a monthly average of 50 micrograms per cubic meter; Yugoslavia (winter), a daily average of 60 micrograms; and London (1-day winter peak in 1952), 750 micrograms, now reduced to less than 15 micrograms.

Anthropologist Louis Dupree ("Afghanistan: The politics of a tragicomedy," News and Comment, 1 May, p. 521), a member of the American Universities Field Staff, is also associated with the Pennsylvania State University, not with the University of Pennsylvania, as stated.

(9 Apr., p. 193), the identification number of the grant from the National Institutes of Health Division of Research Resources [(15), p. 196] is misprinted. It should read RR-71.

In the report by N. Yamamoto et al., "Transformation of human leukocytes by cocultivation with an adult T cell leukemia virus producer cell line" (20 Aug., p. 737), the column headings in Table 1, on page 738, under "Cells with markers (%)," should have read: Leu 1, Leu 2a, Leu 3a, Leu 4, and Ia (not immunoglobulin A).

In the report "Associative behavioral modification in Hermissenda: Cellular correlates" by T. J. Crow and D. L. Alkon (18 July, p. 412), the last sentence on page 412, column 2, paragraph 1, should read, "We have now found that modification of the photopositive response in Hermissenda is correlated with cellular changes in the type B photo-receptors."

In the report "Access of urinary nonvolatiles to the mammalian vomeronasal organ" by C. J. Wysocki et al. (15 Feb., p. 781), the parts of Fig. I were inadvertently interchanged.

The hypothetical wheel of carbon atoms shown in the illustration on page 1311 accompanying the News Report "The apostle of nanotechnology" by Ivan Amato is a chemically dubious structure generated by computer program. It was inadvertently published instead of a different, correct structure.

In Jean L. Marx's Research News article "Oxygen free radicals linked to many diseases" (30 Jan., p. 529), Benedict Lucchesi (whose name was misspelled) was incorrectly described as expecting to initiate clinical trials of superoxide dismutase and catalase in human heart attack patients who undergo reperfusion therapy.

In Table 1 (p. 351) of the report "Structure-activity studies of interleukin-2" by F. E. Cohen et al. (17 Oct., p. 349), reference 15 was incorrectly cited for the entries for the 1-29, 30-49, and 100-133 deletion mutants. For all three entries, the reference should have been (16).

In Deborah Barnes' Research News article "Debate over potential AIDS drug" (10 July, p. 128), Douglas Brenneman was incorrectly identified as a scientist at the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke. Brenneman works at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

In the Research News article by Jean L. Marx, "The polyphosphoinositides revisited" (19 Apr., p. 312), the discovery of inositol 1,3,4-tris-phosphate was erroneously attributed to Michael Berridge of Cambridge University. Although Berridge presented some of the data at the Smith Kline & French symposium, the work was actually done by his Cambridge colleagues Robin Irvine and Peter Downes.

In the article "Antiviral chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis" by Raphael Dolin (15 Mar., p. 1296), the compound rimantadine should have been identified as alpha-methyl-l-adamantane methylamine hydrochloride, not alpha-methyl-l-adamantanamine hydrochloride.

In the news article, "More seismic research asked to improve atomic test detection" [Science 130, 26 (3 July 1959)], the second figure in column 2 of Table 1 should have been 1500, not 20-100.

In the briefing "AIDS case dismissed on legal technicality" by Deborah M. Barnes (News & Comment, 25 July, p. 414), the date when Robert Gallo and his associates were awarded a patent for developing a test to detect antibodies in blood samples of people contaminated with the AIDS virus was incorrect. It should have been May 1985, not May 1984.

In the article "Mathematicians recognize major discoveries" by Gina Kolata (Research News, 15 Aug., p. 722), Fields Medal winner Michael Freedman was incorrectly described as being a member of the University of Southern California faculty. Freedman is Charles Lee Powell Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, San Diego. In addition, several names in the article were spelled incorrectly. Field's should have been Fields, Nevalinna and Navanlinna should have been Nevanlinna, Kirky should have been Kirby, Aryiyah should have been Atiyah, and Strasen should have been Strassen.     

Erratum

Results of a California state survey on ground water contamination were incorrectly reported in the article "Ground water ills: Many diagnoses, few remedies" by Marjorie Sun (News & Comment, 20 June, p. 1490). Six percent, not one-fifth, of California's large drinking water wells fed by ground water exceeded state pollution limits. One-fifth of the wells showed trace amounts of organic chemicals.

The title of the News & Comment article by Marjorie Sun on page 445 of the issue of 31 January should have been "The global fight over plant genes."
