The objectives of this study were to estimate heritability for scrotal circumference (SC) and semen traits and their genetic correlations (rg) with birth weight (BRW). Semen traits were recorded for Line 1 Hereford bulls (n = 841), born in 1963 or from 1967 to 2000, that were selected for use at Fort Keogh (Miles City, MT) or for sale. Semen was collected by electroejaculation when bulls were a mean age of 446 d. Phenotypes were BRW, SC, ejaculate volume, subjective scores for ejaculate color, swirl, sperm concentration and motility, and percentages of sperm classified as normal and live or having abnormal heads, abnormal midpieces, proximal cytoplasmic droplets (primary abnormalities), bent tails, coiled tails, or distal cytoplasmic droplets (secondary abnormalities). Percentages of primary and secondary also were calculated. Data were analyzed using multiple-trait derivative-free REML. Models included fixed effects for contemporary group, age of dam, age of bull, inbreeding of the bull and his dam, and random animal and residual effects. Random maternal and permanent maternal environmental effects were also included in the model for BRW. Estimates of heritability for BRW, SC, semen color, volume, concentration, swirl, motility, and percentages of normal, live, abnormal heads, abnormal midpieces, proximal cytoplasmic droplets, bent tails, coiled tails, distal cytoplasmic droplets, and primary and secondary abnormalities were 0.34, 0.57, 0.15, 0.09, 0.16, 0.21, 0.22, 0.35, 0.22, 0.00 0.16, 0.37, 0.00 0.34 0.00, 0.30, and 0.33, respectively. Estimates of rg for SC with color, volume, concentration, swirl, motility, and percentages of live, normal, and primary and secondary abnormalities were 0.73, 0.20, 0.77, 0.40, 0.34, 0.63, 0.33, -0.36, and -0.45, respectively. Estimates of rg for BRW with SC, color, volume, concentration, swirl, motility, and percentages live, normal, and primary and secondary abnormalities were 0.28, 0.60, 0.08, 0.58, 0.44, 0.21, 0.34, 0.20, -0.02, and -0.16, respectively. If selection pressure was applied to increase SC, all of the phenotypes evaluated would be expected to improve. Predicted correlated responses in semen characteristics per genetic SD of selection applied to SC were 0.87 genetic SD or less. If selection pressure was applied to reduce BRW, the correlated responses would generally be smaller but antagonistic to improving all of the phenotypes evaluated. Predicted correlated responses in SC and semen characteristics per genetic SD of selection applied to BRW were less than 0.35 genetic SD.  相似文献

From 1981 through 1986, BW, hip height, and scrotal circumference (SC) measurements were obtained on 329 bulls at the start of a 140-d gain test (SOT) and every 28 d to the end of test (EOT). Age, overall ADG, weight per day of age, ADG by period, and SC growth (cm/d) were calculated. Data were analyzed in two data sets because age of dam (AOD) and birth weights were unavailable between 1981 and 1983. Correlations of SC to other traits measured and probabilities for bulls attaining 30 or 32 cm SC by 365 d of age were calculated. Two adjusted 365-d SC (365-d SC) were calculated for each individual from regression analysis and from the following formula: 365-d SC = [(SCEOT-SCSOT)/140 d] x [365-ageSOT] + SCSOT. Except for ADG in Data Set 2, breed group differences (P less than .05) were observed for correlations of SC to all growth traits, age, and AOD. To attain 30 cm SC by 365 d of age with nearly 100% probability, Angus, Simmental and Zebu-derived bulls needed a 23-cm SCSOT, whereas continental (other than Simmental) and Polled Hereford bulls required a 26-cm SCSOT. Overall, 365-d SC means calculated by regression analysis or formula method did not differ (P greater than .10) for either data set.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the associations of breed, age, and scrotal circumference (SC), and their interaction, on the prevalence of sperm abnormalities in beef bulls in Alberta, Canada, and the percentage of satisfactory potential breeders identified during breeding soundness examination solely due to normal sperm morphology. Eosin-nigrosin stained semen smears and evaluation reports of 1642 bull breeding soundness evaluations were procured from 6 veterinary clinics in Alberta. Sperm morphology was determined for at least 100 sperm per bull. The most common defects were detached head [4.86% ± 5.71%; mean ± standard deviation (s)], distal midpiece reflex (6.19% ± 9.13%), and bent tail (1.01% ± 1.54%). Although breed, age, and SC did not significantly affect the prevalence of head or midpiece defects, morphologically normal or abnormal sperm, tail defects were more prevalent in Angus and Hereford bulls compared with other breeds. Overall, solely on the basis of sperm morphology, 1363 (83.0%) bulls were classified as satisfactory potential breeders and the remainder 279 (17.0%) as unsatisfactory (> 30% abnormal sperm, > 20% defective heads, or both). Although not significantly different, the breed with the highest percentage of satisfactory potential breeders was Limousin (90.6%) and the lowest was Hereford (78.8%). That 17% of bulls subjected to breeding soundness evaluation were designated as unsatisfactory solely on the basis of sperm morphology highlights its importance.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine the relationship of age to body weight (BW), scrotal circumference (SC), number of pixels of testicular ultrasonograms (NP), and semen quality in Sahiwal bulls. The study was based on 128 Sahiwal bulls of different age groups (from 0 to >100 months of age). Bulls were evaluated for SC, BW, and NP. Semen was evaluated once a week for five consecutive weeks from regularly collected donor bulls (n = 86) ranging in age from 25–30 to >100 months. Ejaculate volume, sperm motility, sperm concentration, sperm morphology, percent live sperms, sperm plasma membrane integrity, and normal acrosome were compared among different age groups. Mean SC and BW increased (P < 0.05) in a curvilinear manner from birth to >100 months of age. Mean NP of testicular ultrasonograms increased (P < 0.05) from 0 to 24 months and then plateaued until >100 months of age. Body weight, SC, and NP were positively correlated with age from birth until >100 months (r = 0.91, 0.87, and 0.40, respectively). Ejaculate volume (5.7 ± 0.2 vs. 4.6 ± 0.09 ml) and sperm concentration (1,281.6 ± 17.7 vs. 1,115.8 ± 55.9 × 106/ml) increased (P < 0.05) in mature bulls compared to younger ones. However, motility (68.6 ± 0.3%), plasma membrane integrity (50.8 ± 1.0%), and normal acrosome (74.8 ± 0.5%) remained insignificant due to age. In six of eight age groups studied, morphological abnormalities were well within the range (18.1 ± 0.3%). In conclusion, the BW, SC, and NP of testicular ultrasonograms, ejaculate volume, and concentration increased with age. Moreover, semen quality is fairly independent of age except volume and concentration in Sahiwal bulls.  相似文献

Tissue sections from testes and epididymides obtained from 17 young beef bulls with scrotal circumference (SC) between 27 and 40.5 cm were studied to determine whether small testes were a manifestation of lesions or a result of less, but otherwise normal, seminiferous epithelium. The SC correlated negatively with the estimates of germinal epithelial loss and positively with seminiferous epithelial area. Four bulls with SC less than 30 cm had severe lesions in their testes. Hypoplastic tubules were characterized by Sertoli's cells only with no evidence of germinal cells. Loss of germinal cells, leaving vacuolated epithelium and atrophy, were observed in degenerated tubules. Hyperplasia of Leydig's cells was observed in the vicinity of Sertoli's cell-only tubules, resulting either from degeneration or hypoplasia, and atrophy of Leydig's cells was associated with tubules devoid of Sertoli's cells. These findings indicated that Sertoli's cells may produce a factor(s) required for maintenance and regulation of Leydig's cell function. Epididymal epithelium, especially in the head, had regressed in bulls with hypoplastic and degenerative changes in their testes. Decreased sperm concentration and motility and an increased frequency of morphologic defects were observed in the 4 bulls with testicular lesions and regressed epididymal epithelium. Blood plasma profiles of cortisol, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and testosterone were determined in the 4 bulls with SC less than 30 cm and 10 of the 13 bulls with SC greater than 30 cm. There were no statistically significant (P greater than 0.1) differences in the responses to exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone or base-line patterns of blood plasma follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone between the 2 groups. However, in the bulls with SC less than 30 cm, the mean concentration of testosterone was lower, whether spontaneous (P less than 0.05) or exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone induced (P less than 0.1). The fact that these bulls were not deficient in gonadotropins indicated that Leydig's cell function was impaired by local factors, either the factors that caused the tubular damage or those consequent to the tubular damage.  相似文献

Scrotal circumference data obtained from performance test station bulls were corrected to 240 and 365 days of age. Data were analyzed, retrospectively, to determine the outcome for scrotal circumference at 365 days of age, if bulls were culled at selected cut-off values for scrotal circumference at 240 days of age. The data indicate that scrotal circumference measurements in weaned bulls may not be useful as a culling tool, since a large proportion of bulls, irrespective of breed, fell below the selected cut-off measurement for scrotal circumference at weaning, but met the minimum scrotal circumference at one year of age. Scrotal circumference measurements at 240 days of age may, however, be useful as a tool for selecting bulls with a greater than 80% probability of achieving the minimum scrotal circumference measurement at one year of age.  相似文献

Effects of zeranol on the maturation of the adenohypophyseal-gonadal axis were studied in beef bulls. Calves were implanted with 36 mg of zeranol at 3-month intervals from birth through 6 months of age (group 2, n = 10) or were not treated (control group 1, n = 10). After 9 months, group-2 calves were given implants of 36 mg of zeranol at 3-month intervals through 18 months of age (group 2B, n = 5) or were not reimplanted (group 2A, n = 5). Areas under the curves outlined by concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone for 6 hours after the administration of 100 micrograms of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) were calculated. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone was administered at 3-month intervals from 1.5 through 19.5 months of age. Areas under the curves for concentrations of testosterone for 4 hours after the administration of 10,000 IU of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) at 4.5, 7.5, and 10.5 months or 1,000 IU at 13.5 and 16.5 months of age also were calculated. The amount of FSH released was greater (P less than 0.05) for group-2 than for group-1 calves at 4.5 and 7.5 months of age. The amount of FSH released in groups 2A and 2B tended (P less than 0.10) to be greater than that for group 1. Significant differences between groups 2A and 2B were not observed. The purpose of this study was to estimate the heritability of scrotal circumference (SC) and semen traits, genetic correlations between SC and semen quality traits, and the effect of cytoplasmic line on SC and semen traits. Breeding soundness exam (BSE) data were collected on registered Angus bulls at 4 ranches over 7 yr. The American Angus Association provided historical pedigree information to estimate the effect of cytoplasmic line on SC and semen quality traits. After editing, the evaluated data set contained 1,281 bulls with breeding soundness exam data that traced back to 100 founder dams. Data were analyzed using a 2-trait animal model to obtain heritability, genetic correlation between SC and semen quality traits, as well as the effect of cytoplasmic line as a random effect for SC, percent motility (MOT), percent primary abnormalities (PRIM), percent secondary abnormalities (SEC), and percent total abnormalities (TOT) using multiple-trait derivative-free REML. Fixed effects included source ranch and collection year, and test age was used as a covariate. Estimates of heritability for SC, MOT, PRIM, SEC, and TOT were 0.46, 0.05, 0.27, 0.23, and 0.25, respectively. Genetic correlations between SC and MOT, PRIM, SEC, and TOT were 0.36, -0.19, -0.11, and -0.23, respectively. The proportions of phenotypic variance accounted for by cytoplasmic line for SC, MOT, PRIM, SEC, and TOT were <0.001, 0.013, 0.023, 0.002, and <0.001, respectively. Genetic correlations between SC and semen quality traits were low to moderate and favorable. Cytoplasmic line may have a marginal effect on MOT and PRIM, but is likely not a significant source of variation for SC, SEC, or TOT.  相似文献

Aims: To provide herd managers with a set of decision rules allowing them to predict the likelihood that a juvenile bull is ready for Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation (BBSE), or breeding, if bodyweight and scrotal circumference are known.

Methods: This was a longitudinal study following two groups of young pasture-fed Holstein and Jersey bulls from northwest Tasmania, Australia. Individual scrotal circumference, bodyweight and semen characteristics were recorded at 6–8 weekly intervals, from 6–18 months of age. Classification and regression tree analyses were used to predict the probability that a bull had ≥70% normal sperm morphology based on scrotal circumference and bodyweight measurements.

Results: Overall 1,661 scrotal circumference and bodyweight measurements were obtained, and 518 semen samples from 356 bulls were assessed for sperm morphology, from 16 examination sessions that took place between 29 May 2015 and 17 August 2016. Classification and regression tree analyses generated a decision tree for Holstein bulls with four node endpoints, and for Jersey bulls with three node endpoints. Diagnostic test performance showed that for Holstein bulls, using the node endpoints of scrotal circumference ≥27?cm and bodyweight ≥349?kg, 98% had ≥70% normal sperm (positive likelihood ratio 10.4; 95% CI?=?2.7–41), and using the node endpoints of scrotal circumference ≥27?cm and bodyweight between 282–349?kg, 89% had ≥70% normal sperm (positive likelihood ratio 1.6; 95% CI?=?0.9–2.6). For Jersey bulls, using the node endpoints of bodyweight ≥259?kg and scrotal circumference ≥29?cm, 88% had ≥70% normal sperm (positive likelihood ratio 3.4; 95% CI?=?1.6–7.0).

Conclusions: This study provides a set of relatively simple decision rules based on bodyweight and scrotal circumference measurements that allows herd managers to assess the likelihood that juvenile bulls are ready for BBSE or breeding.

Calving records for daughters of 667 Record of Performance tested sires were examined to study factors related to age at first calving. For the 3025 heifers analyzed, mean age (± SD) at first calving was 791.5 ± 161.6 days (26.4 ± 5.4 months). There were significant effects of the breed of sire on age of heifer at first calving. Daughters of Angus sires calved earlier than daughters of Charolais, Hereford, Limousin, and Simmental sires. Mean ages at first calving for daughters of Hereford, Limousin, and Simmental bulls were significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with the sire's end-of-test age-adjusted scrotal circumference, but these correlations were not significant when farm effects were controlled. It appears that unknown herd level factors are more important in determining age at first calving in Ontario herds than using early maturing sires as determined by scrotal circumference measurements.  相似文献

Zeranol implants were administered to 250 crossbred heifer calves at 1, 6 or 9 mo of age to evaluate growth, reproduction and calving performance. Heifers were assigned to eight treatment groups with 25 animals per group. Two additional groups of 25 heifers each were used to study the effects of multiple implants at two levels of nutrition on heifer performance. Implants at 1 mo of age (branding) increased heifer weights at 6 mo of age (weaning) by 5 kg (P = .08). Heifers receiving a combination of two implants gained faster (P less than .05) from weaning to breeding (6 to 13 mo) than controls or heifers implanted three times. Implants at either 6 or 9 mo increased (P less than .05) precalving pelvic areas (247 vs 241 cm2 and 248 vs 240 cm2 over controls, respectively). Implants did not affect the percent of heifers reaching puberty prior to breeding season. Conception rates in 62 d of breeding were comparable for implanted and control heifers (93 vs 96%), with the exception of heifers receiving implants at both 1 and 6 mo of age (56%). Calf birth weight, dystocia score, cow rebreeding rate and calf weaning weight were not affected by implant treatments. Heifers that received three implants and were fed at a high nutritional level (gained .62 vs .49 kg/d for regular level after weaning) tended (P greater than .10) to reach puberty at a higher rate prior to breeding and to have a higher total conception rate than implanted heifers on the regular nutrition level.  相似文献

In the present study, the correlations among age, body weight, scrotal circumference (SC), semen quality and peripheral testosterone and estradiol-17beta (E(2)) concentrations were investigated in pubertal (n=5) and postpubertal (n=7) groups of Holstein bulls over a 6 week period. There were significant positive correlations (P<0.01) among age, body weight and SC in both groups, and similar significant correlations between sperm motility and SC in pubertal bulls (P<0.01) and between sperm concentration and SC in postpubertal bulls (P<0.05). The sperm motility after collection (P<0.05) and after freezing and thawing (P<0.01) of the postpubertal bulls correlated positively with the E(2) concentration. Estrogen may be important for the function of postpubertal bull testes, in which it may regulate spermatozoa motility in vivo.  相似文献

Standard breeding soundness examinations plus measurement of scrotal surface temperature (SST), internal/scrotal testicular temperatures, testicular ultrasonographic echotexture, daily sperm production, and epididymal sperm reserves were conducted on 129, 16-month-old crossbred beef bulls. There were significant positive linear correlations between SST and internal scrotal/testicular temperatures, a positive linear regression (P < 0.06) of bottom SST with the incidence of secondary sperm defects, but a negative linear regression (P < 0.01) with the incidence of primary sperm defects. Testicular echotexture had a positive linear regression with daily sperm production (P < 0.002) and testicular tone had a negative linear regression (P < 0.008) with epididymal sperm reserves. Scrotal circumference had a positive linear regression (P < 0.04) with the percentage of progressively motile sperm, a negative linear regression (P < 0.1) with the incidence of primary sperm defects, and a positive linear regression (P < 0.0001) with epididymal sperm reserves. In addition to seminal quality and scrotal circumference, testicular ultrasonographic echotexture has considerable promise for augmenting breeding soundness examinations of bulls.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate age and scrotal circumference as predictors of semen quality in young beef bulls. DESIGN: Cohort study. ANIMALS: 1,173 beef bulls < 15 months old. PROCEDURE: During initial breeding soundness examination, variables for bulls producing > or = 70% morphologically normal spermatozoa were compared with those for bulls producing < 70% morphologically normal spermatozoa. Mean and 95% confidence interval for age and scrotal circumference were constructed to detect differences between groups of bulls over all observations and within the 5 most common breeds. For these 5 breeds, chi 2 analysis was used to evaluate differences in the proportion of bulls that had values less than the population mean for scrotal circumference, age, and percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa. Multivariate regression was used to quantify variation in the proportion of morphologically normal spermatozoa that could be explained by age and scrotal circumference. RESULTS: Mean (+/- SD) age and scrotal circumference differed significantly for bulls that produced > or = 70% morphologically normal spermatozoa (12.7 +/- 1.1 months and 35.6 +/- 2.7 cm) and bulls that produced < 70% morphologically normal spermatozoa (12.1 +/- 1.2 months and 34.8 +/- 3.3 cm). The proportion of bulls younger than mean age at first examination and the proportion producing > or = 70% morphologically normal spermatozoa differed among breeds. Age and scrotal circumference explained only 11% of the variation in semen quality. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Among young beef bulls, those that were older and had larger testes were more likely to produce > or = 70% morphologically normal spermatozoa. Age and scrotal circumference were not sufficient predictors of semen quality.  相似文献

Simmental and Hereford bulls were individually fed varying levels of the same diet to determine the effect of energy intake after weaning on rate of sexual development. For 200 d, 29 Simmentals were fed an average of 14.6, 19.2 or 23.8 Mcal and 27 Herefords were fed 13.4, 17.5 or 22.2 Mcal metabolizable energy per bull daily. Higher energy did not hasten sexual development, as measured by serum testosterone, age at first mating or age at puberty. As energy level increased, weight at puberty increased (P less than .05) for both breeds, and scrotal circumference at puberty increased (P less than .05) for Simmentals. When adjusted for breed and energy level, bulls that were heavier at 1 yr of age had larger scrotal circumference (P less than .05) and were younger at puberty (P less than .01). Bulls that had higher serum testosterone at 1 yr of age reached puberty earlier (P less than .01). At a constant age there was no relationship between testosterone and scrotal circumference. Although higher levels of energy increased scrotal circumference of Simmentals, it did not hasten sexual development for either breed.  相似文献

Simmental and Hereford bulls were individually fed varying levels of the same diet to determine the effects of energy intake after weaning, degree of fatness, and short-term weight change on reproductive characteristics of yearling beef bulls. For 200 d (ending in May), 29 Simmentals were fed an average of 14.6, 19.2 or 23.8 Mcal and 27 Herefords were fed 13.4, 17.5 or 22.2 Mcal metabolizable energy per bull daily. Bulls then were adjusted to a roughage diet for 10 d before grazing brome pasture for 38 d (ending in June). Energy level did not affect motility or sperm morphology of semen collected with an artificial vagina in May and June. High energy levels were not detrimental to bull performance during a 30-min serving-capacity test in May or June. Backfat thickness was not related to semen characteristics or serving capacity. Amount of weight lost from May to June did not affect the semen quality or serving capacity of Herefords. Those Simmental bulls that had a more positive weight change from May to June had a more favorable change in semen quality from May to June (P less than .05) due to lower semen quality in May (P less than .05). The high level of energy was not detrimental to semen characteristics or serving capacity. Some of the Simmental bulls may have been underfed for maximum semen quality at the beginning of the pasture period. Within the normal range of energy fed to beef bulls from weaning to the beginning of the breeding season as yearlings, it may be more likely to underfeed breeds of large mature size than to overfeed British breeds.  相似文献

The effect of age and body weight on scrotal circumference (SC), the effect of SC on percentage of sperm abnormalities and seminal characteristics, and the relationship of SC with testicular weight, epididymidal weight, degree of germinal epithelial loss (DGEL), and percentage of tubules graded 4 or greater (G4+) were studied in 37 Angus bulls. All bulls were from one herd and were examined at monthly intervals, during a 140-day weight gain test starting when they were 11 months old. The study was terminated when the bulls were slaughtered at 14 months of age. As age and body weight increased, SC increased (P less than 0.001). The incidence of sperm abnormalities decreased (P less than 0.001) as SC increased; however, seminal characteristics remained poor in bulls with SC less than or equal to 32 cm. Pathologic changes in 600 cross sections of seminiferous tubules from each bull were classified into 9 grades. The DGEL per 100 tubules was calculated by assigning a value to each grade according to the severity of loss of germinal epithelium. Tubules classified as G4+ were devoid of germinal cells and provided an index of irreversible loss of germinal epithelium. The SC was correlated positively with testicular weight (r = 0.91, P less than 0.001) and epididymal weight (r = 0.59, P less than 0.001) and negatively with DGEL (r = -0.48, P less than 0.01) and G4+ (r = -0.44, P less than 0.01).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
