The effect of management of maize residues on the population of insects inimical to the establishment of alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., was examined 1 month after sowing. Alfalfa was sown in early and late April, and late May for 3 consecutive years in Centre County, Pennsylvania, USA. The sowings were made by conservation tillage (direct drilled into maize residue with minimal disturbance of soil) into three different maize residues after (1) silage, (2) silage-plus-winter rye cover and (3) grain. A fourth sowing was by conventional tillage (spring ploughing and harrowing maize residue) after grain. A pesticide, carbofuran (granular formulation) was applied at sowing to half of the plots. Methiocarb bait, a molluscicide, was applied as a split application to the same plots, one-half at sowing and the remainder 2 weeks later. Alfalfa plots in the silage-plus-rye maize residues were colonized with fewer insects than the other residue treatments. Excessive growth of rye in early spring that was not successfully suppressed by herbicide treatment produced vigorous rye plants and fewer alfalfa seedlings. Consequently, silage plus rye had the lowest yield of alfalfa in early April sowings in 2 out of 3 years. Insects known to feed on alfalfa, such as tarnished plant bugs, Lygus lineolaris (Palsot de Beauvois), the plant bug, Plagiognathus politus Uhler, pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), and meadow spittlebugs, Philaenus leucophthalmus spumarius (L.), were collected by sweep net 1 month after sowing and less often in the silage-plus-rye treatment. These species were present in greater numbers in the other maize residues that had significantly more alfalfa forage. The insidious flower bug, Orius insidious (Say), and a damsel bug, Nabis americoferus Carayon, were collected in significantly greater numbers in the early April sowings, which corresponded with the peak populations of pea aphid. The potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae (Harris), was most abundant in plots sowed in late April or late May. Pesticide treatment applied at the time of sowing had very little effect on numbers of insects collected by sweep net 1 month later in 1986 and 1988. However, pesticide treatment significantly increased yield by 280 kg ha?1 in 1987, even though sweep net collections of insects were not reduced by the pesticide treatment. Therefore, the beneficial effect of the pesticide could not be explained on the basis of the insects collected. The highest yields of alfalfa were obtained from the early April sowing into maize residues. This coincided with the time when the majority of alfalfa pests were less abundant than in later sowings; fewer pests were found on the sowings into silage-plus-rye residue. Also, when the rye forage yield was combined with the alfalfa yield, this became the most productive system.  相似文献

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plays an important role in crop–livestock mixed farming on marginal land in the semiarid Loess Plateau. However, the duration, yield performance and water use of long-term alfalfa stands and choice of appropriate subsequent crops are not clear. A 5-year field experiment was conducted at Zhonglianchuan, Gansu Province, China from 2001 to 2005. Productivity and water use were determined and compared between (1) three alfalfa stands that were 1–5 (A1–5), 6–10 (A6–10) and 11–15 (A11–15) years old during the trial; (2) alfalfa using conventional cultivation and a water-harvesting technique (RA1–5); and (3) conventional crop rotation (CK) and four 5-year crop sequence rotations sown after 10-year-old alfalfa had been ploughed, being millet–wheat–potato–pea–potato (MWLPL); millet–corn–corn–wheat–wheat (MCCWW); millet–potato–wheat–corn–corn (MLWCC) and millet–fallow–pea–potato–pea (MFPLP). Forage yield peaked in 7-year-old alfalfa (5740 kg ha−1), but 9-year-old alfalfa had the maximum forage yield profit (4477 kg ha−1 y−1) in terms of whole growing years. Soil water use efficiency (WUES in terms of forage yield and soil water use) of alfalfa increased dramatically up to the 11th year, and then leveled off from year 12 to 15. Forage yield and WUEB/ET (WUE in terms of aboveground biomass and evapotranspiration) of alfalfa were significantly higher using water harvesting compared with conventional cultivation, but were significantly lower than CK. Soil water content did not change in CK as stand age increased, but it decreased in conventional alfalfa stands. After 10 years of alfalfa, a fallow year was not necessary before planting annual crops as soil water was greatly restored after sowing subsequent annual crops. Yield of some crops in the four crop sequence rotations did not differ significantly from CK. MWLPL and MLWCC had more aboveground biomass than MCCWW and MFPLP but the choice of crop sequence needs to be further considered.  相似文献

We identified clones inSolanum tuberosum L. gp. Tuberosum breeding populations that, although susceptible to infestation by potato leafhopper,Empoasca fabae (Harris), exhibited a tolerance which was manifested by the ability to produce higher than expected tuber yields when heavily infested with leafhoppers. Such tolerance was noted in a number of clones in varying degrees, but one, B6930-1, was exceptional. It sustained only a 19% loss in tuber yield compared to ‘Katahdin,’ a susceptible cultivar, that averaged 33% lower tuber yields under similar infestation levels. We studied the seasonal growth patterns of this clone and compared them to those of Katahdin, and B6705-10, a breeding clone with known resistance to leafhopper infestation. We found that much of B6930-l’s tolerance results from its early, vigorous vine growth and its early and rapid rate of tuber bulking, enabling this clone to escape some of the effects of leafhopper feeding, whereas Katahdin was usually just beginning to tuberize at the height of leafhopper infestation.  相似文献

Alfalfa forage yield, stand persistence and root total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) reserves under variable first-harvest schedules were investigated with or without pest stress during a 4-year period in Oklahoma. Combined stresses due to weeds, alfalfa weevil and aphids reduced alfalfa forage yield in three cultivars by some 2 · 1 t/ha with significant reductions in OK08 and Arc, but not in WL 318. In addition, combined stresses significantly reduced stand persistence and TNC reserves. No significant cultivar x pesticide, cultivar x harvest schedule, or harvest schedule x pesticide interactions occurred. These data suggest that pesticide applications did help to preserve alfalfa stands and productivity. The need for such applications was much less in the pest-resistant cultivar WL 318. Early bud harvesting did not consistently result in reduced productivity of alfalfa relative to other harvest schedules, regardless of the cultivar being analysed or the pesticides applied.  相似文献

Four treatments designed to affect some environmental factors during germination and establishment of alfalfa were: two sowing dates (March and May) to produce differences in temperature, light and soil moisture; two sowing methods (notill drill and hand sowing) for creating different degrees of soil-seed contact; mowing and banded and broadcast sprays of glyphosate to produce varying degrees of plant competition; and methiocarb bait combined with carbofuran granules vs. no pesticide to establish different levels of invertebrate feeding. Alfalfa dry matter (DM) production was affected very little by sowing date in two identical experiments. It was unaffacted by sowing method in experiment 1 (1983) but was significantly higher when alfalfa was sown with a drill in the second trial (1984). Highest alfalfa DM yields were achieved when competition was suppressed by broadcast spraying rather than bands, but details of effect differed in the two experiments. Pesticide treatments yielded more alfalfa DM in the year of establishment. Slugs, Deroceras leave (Müller) and D. reticulatum (Müller), and the potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae (Harris), were among the potential pest species controlled and may have been partly responsible for the observed effects.  相似文献

The effect of age of resistant potato clones,Solarium tuberosum gp.tuberosum, on infestation by potato leafhopper,Empoasca fabae (Harris), was investigated by varying the date of planting in a naturally infested fieldtest Significant differences (P < .05) in infestation levels were found among clones and among dates of planting. The responses of resistant and susceptible clones to infestation differed with date of planting. But lower levels of infestation occurred on all clones in the first 2–3 weeks of leafhopper migration on the early plantings, indicating that plant age in potatoes is a factor in host preference of potato leafhopper  相似文献

Little is known about the intercropping of perennial legumes with annual cereals although intercropping system is widely applied and studied. The main objective of this study was to determine the aboveground biomass yield and interspecific competitiveness in an intercropping system of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) with corn (Zea mays L.). A 3-year (2007-2009) field experiment was conducted, including four intercropping patterns by alternating alfalfa and corn row ratios of 2:2, 3:2, 4:2 and 5:2. Mono-cultured corn and alfalfa were used as the control. The biomass yield of alfalfa was measured at early blooming, whereas that of corn was at physiological maturity. Competitiveness indices examined were land equivalent ratio (LER), aggressivity (A), relative crowding coefficient (K values) and competitive ratio (CR). The biomass yields of mono-cultured alfalfa and all intercropping patterns increased each year. In all years, the 5:2 intercropping pattern always displayed a biomass yield advantage based on greater LER values. Alfalfa had higher relative crowding coefficients (K values), CR, and A values than corn. The intercropping of alfalfa with corn had yield advantages compared to alfalfa or corn monoculture. The intercropping pattern of 5:2 (alfalfa:corn row ratio) was an optimal pattern in our study. Alfalfa was the superior competitor when grown with corn, and its productivity dominated the total biomass yields. Thus, intercropping of alfalfa with corn has the potential to improve performance with high land-use efficiency.  相似文献

Potato genotypes were evaluated for resistance to natural infestations of the potato leafhopper,Empoasca fabae (Harris), in the field. Characterization of Type A and B glandular trichomes, phenolic properties of Type A trichomes, glycoalkaloid content and composition,E. fabae adult and nymph infestation, leaf damage (hopperburn), yield, and yield reduction were determined on genotypes PI 473331 and PI 473334 (accessions ofSolatium berthaultii (Hawkes)), NY123 and Q174-2 (advanced hybrids), and Elba and Allegany (commercial cultivars). Regarding the Type A trichome, PI 473334 was most pubescent, followed by PI 473331, both had high levels of enzymatic browning; on PI 473334 no glycoalkaloids were detected, while on PI 473331 solamargine and solasonine were present. Those genotypes were the least infested by adults; moreover, nymphs were never found on their leaves. PI 473331 and Q174-2 possess Type B trichomes, the latter had levels of Type A trichome comparable to the first and to NY123, while displaying high levels of phenolic oxidation of Type A and very low levels of glycoalkaloids. Although Q174-2 had intermediate infestation ofE. fabae, it suffered a yield reduction comparable to the control cultivar Allegany. The density of Type A trichomes of NY123 was relatively low, even though the browning assay results were significantly elevated. Foliage of this genotype was found to contain the four types of glycoalkaloids studied at high levels.Empoasca fabae infestation on NY123 was intermediate, and it yielded well on infested plots, but suffered an intermediate yield reduction. Elba presented densities of Type A similar to NY123. It suffered the lowest yield reduction despite its high levels of leafhopper infestation and hopperburn. Its tolerance might be associated with its phenology, since it is a late-maturing cultivar. High scores of the modified enzymatic browning assay were correlated with high infestation and high leaf damage. Results indicated a significant correlation between leafhopper infestation and hopperburn.  相似文献

Corky ringspot disease (CRS) of potato is caused by tobacco rattle virus (TRV). The virus is transmitted by the stubby root nematode (Paratrichodorus allius) in the Pacific Northwest potato-producing regions. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and Scotch spearmint (Mentha cardiaca Baker) rarely serve as hosts for TRV. Therefore,P. allius reared on these plants for 1 to 3 months are cleansed of TRV in greenhouse trials. However, weeds in alfalfa and Scotch spearmint rotation crops may serve as hosts for the virus. In greenhouse trials, hairy nightshade (Solanum sarrachoides), prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola), henbit (Lamium amplexicaule) and, green foxtail (Setaria viridis) grown alone were found to be suitable hosts ofP. allius, whereas Powell amaranth (Amaranthus powellii) was not. ViruliferousP. allius added to hairy nightshade, prickly lettuce, henbit, green foxtail, or Powell amaranth in mixtures with alfalfa and/or Scotch spearmint occasionally remained viruliferous over a 3-to 4-month period, whereasP. allius maintained on weed-free alfalfa or Scotch spearmint became virus-free after 1 to 2 months. Potato grown in soil containingP. allius that had been maintained on weed-alfalfa or weed-Scotch spearmint mixtures for 3 to 4 months exhibited slight to severe CRS symptoms on new tubers, whereas potato following weed-free Scotch spearmint or alfalfa were free from CRS symptoms. Severe CRS symptoms on potato tubers were only observed when potatoes were grown in soil containingP. allius that were maintained on hairy nightshade or hairy nightshade mixtures with alfalfa or Scotch spearmint. These preliminary data suggest that the presence of weeds that serve as hosts of both TRV and P.allius may nullify the positive effects of growing alfalfa or Scotch spearmint for CRS control. Targeted control efforts of known weed hosts may be required to successfully eliminate CRS from fields using alfalfa and Scotch spearmint rotational crops.  相似文献

Fifteen accessions ofSolarium berthaultii Hawkes andS. berthaultii xS. tarijense Hawkes were assessed for resistance to field infestations of the green peach aphid,Myzus persicae (Sulzer), potato leafhopper,Empoasca fabae (Harris), and potato fleabeetle,Epitrix cucumeris (Harris). Accessions bearing both Type A and Type B glandular trichomes were much more resistant to the green peach aphid and potato leafhopper than accessions bearing Type A hairs alone. All accessions had significantly smaller populations of these 3 pests than S.tuberosum cultivars. Total glycoalkaloid (TGA) content of foliage and tubers was not correlated with insect populations. Foliar TGA levels of field-grown plants varied among accessions, ranging from < 2–240 mg/100 g fresh wt. Solasonine and solamargine were the major foliar glycoalkaloids while solamarines predominated in tubers.  相似文献

The effects of soil water level and soil infested or not infested with Colletotrichum coccodes were quantified and compared on Umatilla Russet potato in repeated greenhouse trials. Nitrogen levels in leaflets and tuber yield differed significantly for effect of water level but there was no effect for soil infestation in both trials. More leaflet N as measured by chlorophyll and less tuber yield occurred in the low than the medium and high soil water treatments. Number of progeny tubers was not affected by C. coccodes but numbers were significantly less for the low water level than the high water level in one trial. Root weight was significantly reduced by C. coccodes in both trials and was significantly less in the high than the low and medium soil water levels in one trial. Incidence of infected progeny tubers was significantly reduced in infested soils for the low soil water compared to the medium or high soil water levels in one trial. The effect of increasing levels of water in infested soils had large and significant increases for percentage of stem area with sclerotia in both trials. Managing soil water by not overwatering in irrigated potato fields in the presence of C. coccodes may reduce black dot severity and quantity of sclerotia that potentially can overwinter and serve as sources of infection for subsequent crops. Analyses demonstrated a potential for significant associations between plant and disease variables not evidence for cause and effect.  相似文献

Levels of total glycoalkaloids (TGA) in foliage of 10 wild, tuberbearingSolanum (Tourn.) L. species differentially resistant to infestation by the potato leafhopper,Empoasca fabae (Harris), were determined. Levels of TGA ranged from a high of 688 mg/100 g fresh wt. in a resistant species,S. polyadenium Greenm. to a low of 13 mg/100 g fresh wt. in a susceptible species,S. bulbocastanum Dun. Foliar concentration of TGA and nymphal infestation by the potato leafhopper were highly correlated (r = ?0.75, p = 0.01). The significant correlation of TGA levels and potato leafhopper resistance suggests that foliar TGA may be a significant factor in the defense of wild potato species against this pest.  相似文献

To identify the most important agronomic measures and cultivar traits in Swedish organic potato production, multivariate analyses were performed on a set of data from a series of field trials carried out in Sweden during a 7-year period. The effects of soil parameters, cultivar, year and geographical location on potato characteristics were investigated. Soil parameters including fertility level had strong and significant effects on potato characteristics, explaining 53% of total variation. Variables related to the duration of haulm growth were other dominant factors in the variation. While P and K fertilization increased yields, N fertilization had little effect on yield and a negative effect on the time to emergence. The N requirement of potatoes ranges from 2.5 to 5.9 kg ha?1 per ton of tuber yield and was met in these trials. The results implied the timing of N application is important for yield. It was concluded that the importance of P and K fertilization is underestimated in organic production, and that the most important cultivar trait in achieving acceptable yield is long-lasting foliage, which is a characteristic of cultivars resistant to Phytophthora infestans. Three of the cultivars tested (Lady Balfour, Cicero and Sarpo Mira) had a yield >3.5 kg m?2, which is high in Swedish organic production.  相似文献

Verticillium dahliae Kleb. is a soilborne fungal pathogen of many crops. In potato, it is the major causal agent of Early Dying. In Manitoba, potato fields planted with cv. Russet Burbank are infested with highly pathogenic V. dahliae isolates, which can produce up to 90 % disease severity. The objective of the study was to evaluate selected compost, green manure, and seed-meal treatments, in comparison with the soil fumigant Vapam, for their ability to reduce propagule density of V. dahliae in soil and decrease disease, and to enhance potato yield. Select green manure crops (oriental and white mustard, Canada milk vetch, sorghum-sudangrass, rye, alfalfa, oat/pea mixture), organic amendments (composted cattle manure and mustard seed-meal), and Vapam, and crop sequences that contribute to the suppression of Verticillium, or the improvement of potato yield were used in a 3-year field study initiated in 2006. Survival in soil of microsclerotia was evaluated as a measure of treatments’ success in potentially reducing Early Dying. Compost and seed-meal treatments, compared to an untreated control, reduced incidence to 30 and 40 %, respectively, but only seed-meal reduced V. dahliae propagule density. Overall, green manures over 1 or 2-years were ineffective in reducing propagule density or improving potato yield. Vapam was partially effective in reducing the propagule density only at the beginning of the potato season, but it did not reduce disease incidence compared to the control. Compost and seed-meal are promising as alternative control of V. dahliae. Only compost reduced disease and increased potato yield, which was associated with improved nutrient availability (phosphorus and sulfate) in soil.  相似文献

Crop rotation can be an effective mechanism for reducing disease incidence and contributing nitrogen (N) to succeeding crops. Interactions of plant pathogen suppression and soil nutrient availability may also exist, adding to the cropping system complexity. This study examined the impact of crop rotation, N fertilization, and their interaction on growth, yield, andRhizoctonia solani incidence in potato (Solanum tuberosum L. Norwis). Potato was grown continuously and in two-year rotations with annual alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. Nitro), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth), white lupin (Lupinus albus L. Ultra), and oat (Avena sativa Astro). Fertilizer was banded at potato planting with 0, 45, 90, 135, 180, or 225 kg N ha?1 as (NH4)2SO4. Approximately 58% of continuous potato possessed stem lesions caused byR. solani, but only 12 to 22% of potato stems from other rotations possessed lesions. Tuber dry weight was affected by crop rotation in 1989, a dry year, but not in 1990. Apparent N fertilizer replacement values for hairy vetch, Nitro alfalfa, white lupin, and oat were 65, 43, 26, and 11 kg N ha?1, respectively. All crop rotations studied appeared to enhance potato production by reducing stem infection byR. solani. Vetch and alfalfa provide additional benefits through their N contributions.  相似文献

Verticillium wilt, caused by the soil-borne fungus Verticillium dahliae, is one of the most important diseases of potato in North America. Soil incorporation of alfalfa residues prior to planting potato could be a nonchemical Verticillium wilt management tactic by reducing the number of viable microsclerotia in field soil. Verticillium dahliae microsclerotia were quantified in field soils where organic material from alfalfa was incorporated, and numbers of microsclerotia were compared to fields where alfalfa residue was not incorporated. In addition, bacterial metagenomics was utilized to characterize soils where organic material from alfalfa was or was not incorporated to determine if alfalfa residue incorporation facilitates the formation of soils that suppress or kill V. dahliae microsclerotia. The number of V. dahliae microsclerotia in soil was greater (P = 0.0003) in fields where crop residue was incorporated than fields without incorporation when chloropicrin was used as a fumigant. Conversely, the number of V. dahliae microsclerotia observed in potato plants did not differ (P = 0.4020) between fields where residues were or were not incorporated if chloropicrin was used. Alfalfa residue incorporation did not significantly alter the soil bacterial metagenome compared to fields not subject to residue incorporation in both years of study. Despite these conclusions, the method can be employed to analyze the effect of grower practices with the intent of linking a field practice to increasing soil bacterial diversity and decreasing Verticillium wilt severity on potato.  相似文献

Effect of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization rates on the incidence of Verticillium wilt caused byVerticillium albo-atrum orV. dahliae and tuber yield in potato cv Yukon Gold was evaluated in field plots. In three years of study,V. albo-atrum caused a higher incidence of wilt symptoms (74%–100%) thanV. dahliae (5%–81%) resulting in lower marketable tuber yield. In plots infested withV. albo-atrum, tuber yield ranged from 12.3-22.8 T ha1 compared to 18.1– 31.5 T ha-1 in plots infested withV. dahliae. Application of nitrogen above (280 kg ha-1) or below (70 kg ha-1) the recommended rate of 140 kg ha-1 at planting did not suppress foliar symptoms or protect against yield loss caused by eitherV. albo-atrum orV. dahliae. Similarly, phosphorus rate adjustments did not consistently affect disease incidence regardless of the pathogen. Management of nitrogen or phosphorus fertility rates at planting does not appear to be a viable approach for suppressing Verticillium wilt in the determinant, wiltsusceptible cultivar Yukon Gold.  相似文献

Potato (Solanum tuberoswn L.) vines were studied to determine if they could be successfully ensiled and fed to ruminant animals. Russet Burbank potato vine and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) silages were fed to goats (Capra hircus) to measure in vivo digestibility and to determine if potato glycoalkaloids were aversive or toxic. No differences in the feeding patterns between control and experimental animals were observed. Alfalfa silage was more digestible than the Russet Burbank potato vine silage due to a higher content of digestible cell wall materials. Digestibility differences between potato clones and harvest dates were found when in vivo digestibility tests were performed. W729R was the most digestible clone studied, especially for the early harvest dates. Most of the clones had vines that were more digestible, in vitro, than alfalfa. Vine glycoalkaloid contents of the experimental clones were similar to the values reported in the literature. There was no apparent correlation between vine glycoalkaloid content and percent digestible dry matter. A positive correlation of 0.38 between digestible dry matter and dry vine yield was found. Potato vine silage, produced after pressing the vines to remove water, was an acceptable feed for ruminant animals. Additional in vivo testing is necessary to determine if toxic effects due to glycoalkaloids or pesticides from long term feeding will be a problem.  相似文献
