Abstract

An investigation of the downwind movement, distribution and distance covered from a spray source of insecticide to which oil is an additive. Vertical targets were placed at distances ranging from 0.25 to 64 m and at three heights, 35, 70 and 150 cm, downwind from the spray source. There was an increase in the number of droplets arriving at the targets when 20% oil was added to the aqueous solution. An even greater increase was seen when oil only was sprayed; these results are compared with sprays containing water and a 5% wetting agent. Droplet size and air turbulence effects are discussed, as is the faster evaporation of water-based sprays. The work was carried out on rhododendron leaves using Saturn yellow fluorescent dye as a tracer using a Micron Mini-ULVA and Ulvapron oil. A comparison is made with the use of Shell oil A and Risella 33 used by pest workers.  相似文献

Abstract

The susceptibility of adults and cocooned stages of Apanteles plutellae Kurdj. (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) to four synthetic pyrethroid insecticides and five other chemical insecticides was tested. The chemicals, formulated as emulsifiable concentrates, were decamethrin (0.0014%), permethrin (0.01%), fenvalerate (0.01%), cypermethrin (0.005%), dichlorvos (0.05%), monocrotophos (0.05%), endosulfan (0.05%), phosalone (0.05%) and quinalphos (0.05%). Adults were exposed for 6 h to filter paper impregnated with insecticide solution and were then transferred to untreated vials for observation. Cocoons were sprayed with the chemicals by means of a glass atomiser and held for adult emergence. The pyrethroid formulations and phosalone had little or no harmful effect on the adults and cocooned stages of A. plutellae but quinalphos was highly toxic to all stages tested. Dichlorvos, monocrotophos and endosulfan were highly toxic to adults but relatively safe for the cocooned stages.  相似文献

Abstract

In hybrid sorghum ‘CSH-1’ severe infestation of the earhead caterpillars Cydia sp., Ectomyelois sp., Eublemma sp. nr. gayneri Roths., Heliothis armigera Hub., and Euproctis limbata Wlk, was recorded at Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh) during 1968. The first two were relatively more serious. The loss in grain yield was estimated to be 18.26 per cent, i.e. about 717 kg/ha.

Among different insecticides tested, carbaryl 0.2 per cent spray proved most effective, followed by endosulfan 0.05 per cent spray. Dichlorvos 0.05 per cent gave good initial kill, but showed little persistent effect.  相似文献

To elucidate the early epidemic stages of septoria tritici blotch, especially the relationship between the onset of epidemics, the local availability of primary inoculum, and the presence of wheat debris, the early disease dynamics and airborne concentration in Zymoseptoria tritici ascospores were concomitantly assessed at a small spatiotemporal scale and over two years, using spore traps coupled with a qPCR assay. One plot, with the crop debris left, provided a local source of primary inoculum, while the other plot, without debris, lacked any. According to the assay's limits of detection, daily spore trap samples were classified as not detectable or not quantifiable, detectable, and quantifiable. The proportions of samples assigned to the different classes and numbers of spores in samples classified as quantifiable were significantly different between years, time periods (from November to March) and spore trap location (field with or without debris). The effect of year on the airborne ascospore concentration was high: 22 daily peaks with more than 230 ascospores m?3 day?1 were identified in the autumn of 2012/13, but none in the autumn of 2011/12. The local presence of wheat debris had no obvious effect on the amount of airborne ascospores or on the earliness of the two epidemics, especially in the year with high inoculum pressure (2012/13). These results suggest that the amount of primary airborne inoculum available in a wheat crop is not a limiting factor for the onset of an epidemic.  相似文献

What have the mechanisms of resistance to glyphosate taught us?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The intensive use of glyphosate alone to manage weeds has selected populations that are glyphosate resistant. The three mechanisms of glyphosate resistance that have been elucidated are (1) target-site mutations, (2) gene amplification and (3) altered translocation due to sequestration. What have we learned from the selection of these mechanisms, and how can we apply those lessons to future herbicide-resistant crops and new mechanisms of action? First, the diversity of glyphosate resistance mechanisms has helped further our understanding of the mechanism of action of glyphosate and advanced our knowledge of plant physiology. Second, the relatively rapid evolution of glyphosate-resistant weed populations provides further evidence that no herbicide is invulnerable to resistance. Third, as new herbicide-resistant crops are developed and new mechanisms of action are discovered, the weed science community needs to ensure that we apply the lessons we have learned on resistance management from the experience with glyphosate. Every new weed management system must be evaluated during development for its potential to select for resistance, and stewardship programs should be in place when the new program is introduced. The vegetation ecosystem of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau in China,considered to be the′′natural laboratory′′of climate change in the world,has undergone profound changes under the stress of global change.Herein,we analyzed and discussed the spatial-temporal change patterns and the driving mechanisms of net primary productivity(NPP)in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau from 2000 to 2015 based on the gravity center and correlation coefficient models.Subsequently,we quantitatively distinguished the relative effects of climate change(such as precipitation,temperature and evapotranspiration)and human activities(such as grazing and ecological construction)on the NPP changes using scenario analysis and Miami model based on the MOD17A3 and meteorological data.The average annual NPP in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau showed a decreasing trend from the southeast to the northwest during 2000–2015.With respect to the inter-annual changes,the average annual NPP exhibited a fluctuating upward trend from 2000 to 2015,with a steep increase observed in 2005 and a high fluctuation observed from 2005 to 2015.In the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau,the regions with the increase in NPP(change rate higher than 10%)were mainly concentrated in the Three-River Source Region,the northern Hengduan Mountains,the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River,and the eastern parts of the North Tibet Plateau,whereas the regions with the decrease in NPP(change rate lower than–10%)were mainly concentrated in the upper reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River and the Ali Plateau.The gravity center of NPP in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau has moved southwestward during 2000–2015,indicating that the increment and growth rate of NPP in the southwestern part is greater than those of NPP in the northeastern part.Further,a significant correlation was observed between NPP and climate factors in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau.The regions exhibiting a significant correlation between NPP and precipitation were mainly located in the central and eastern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau,and the regions exhibiting a significant correlation between NPP and temperature were mainly located in the southern and eastern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau.Furthermore,the relative effects of climate change and human activities on the NPP changes in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau exhibited significant spatial differences in three types of zones,i.e.,the climate change-dominant zone,the human activity-dominant zone,and the climate change and human activity interaction zone.These research results can provide theoretical and methodological supports to reveal the driving mechanisms of the regional ecosystems to the global change in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau.  相似文献

Recently, Elsinoë piri has become an important pathogen in unsprayed and organic apple orchards. The increasing demand for organic apples as well as the limited use of fungicides imposed by European legislation has turned this pathogen, which has been known for over a century in Europe, into a resurgent phytosanitary threat. It also represents a new trait to be taken into account in apple breeding programmes. As E. piri is extremely difficult to isolate and causes symptoms that can be confused with those caused by other pathogens, a quantitative PCR (qPCR) test has been developed based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rDNA gene. This test, which displays a low limit of detection, allows the early detection of the fungus in apple leaves. As a quantitative method, it is a promising tool for breeding purposes as it can be used on leaves to assess the level of quantitative resistance of apple cultivars to the disease. The molecular test is also useful to gain knowledge on the epidemiology of this re-emerging fungal disease. Spore trapping conducted in 2015, 2016 and 2020 using Rotorod devices and the qPCR test showed that airborne inoculum is released at the end of the growing season. Tests were also carried out to demonstrate that the pathogen was detected in buds during winter. A comparison of 18 E. piri isolates based on the sequencing of five genome regions highlighted a high genotypic diversity. All these isolates were detected with the qPCR test developed in this study.  相似文献

-Aminobutyric acid (BABA), an inducer of pathogen resistance in plants, induced disease resistance in reproductive parts of the plant, such as grapefruit peel tissue. Application of BABA to specific wound sites on the fruit peel surface induced resistance to Penicillium digitatum, the main postharvest pathogen of citrus fruit, in a concentration-dependent manner, being most effective at 20mM, and rather less effective at either higher or lower concentrations. The effect of BABA in inducing resistance to P. digitatum in the fruit peel surface was local and limited to the vicinity (within 1–2cm) of the BABA-treated site. In addition to inducing pathogen resistance, increasing concentrations of BABA (from 1 to 100mM) also exhibited direct antifungal activity and inhibited P. digitatum spore germination and germ tube elongation in vitro. The induction of resistance to P. digitatum by BABA was accompanied by the activation of various pathogen defense responses in grapefruit peel tissue, including activation of chitinase gene expression and protein accumulation after 48h, and an increase in phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activity after 72h.  相似文献

Plant susceptibility to herbicides is related to several factors, including the environmental conditions under which the plants develop. Two experiments were carried out using Synedrellopsis grisebachii plants in two different developmental stages (vegetative and reproductive), with the goal of studying plant susceptibility to the herbicide, glyphosate, and the dependence of this susceptibility on light intensity (full sunlight and 70% shading), correlated with leaf anatomy. The experimental design for both experiments was completely randomized, with a 2 × 7 factorial scheme, with two light intensities and seven different doses of glyphosate (0D, 1/4D, 1/2D, D, 2D, 4D and 6D, where D is the recommended dose of 1800 g ae ha?1) as the factors and four replicates per treatment. The leaf anatomy was characterized with optical and scanning electron microscopy. The plants that were grown in full sunlight were more tolerant of glyphosate because of thickening of the adaxial epidermis, parenchyma and main vein structures, which required higher glyphosate doses for effective weed control. The plants that were in the reproductive stage were more tolerant of glyphosate, probably because of lower glyphosate absorption and translocation to the reproductive organs.  相似文献

Differential resistance of pearl millet cultivars to downy mildew disease was correlated with the levels of -1,3-glucanase in their seeds. Higher activity of the enzyme in highly resistant cultivars and lower activity in the highly susceptible ones suggested the possible use of -1,3-glucanase as a biochemical marker for screening pearl millet cultivars for downy mildew disease. Inoculation of seedlings with the downy mildew pathogen Sclerospora graminicola resulted in increased enzyme levels in resistant cultivars. Mesocotyl and shoot regions of seedlings recorded higher levels of enzyme than the root. Isoelectric focusing revealed four basic isoforms with pI 9.6, 9.0, 8.9 and 8.2 and two acidic isoforms with pI 4.9 and 6.2 of -1,3-glucanase in pearl millet. The pI 9.6 isoform was a major isoform of the enzyme in the pearl millet seedlings with a probable developmental function. Isoforms pI 6.2 and pI 8.2 appeared to be involved in resistance and pI 4.9 isoform seemed to be involved in pathogenesis of pearl millet-downy mildew.  相似文献

Slugs are major pests of many crops, including winter wheat, in temperate climates, yet current methods of control are often unreliable. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential for common legume species to act as an alternative source of food, or trap crop, for the most damaging agricultural pest species, the grey field slug, Deroceras reticulatum Müller, thereby reducing damage to the wheat crop. A series of three controlled-environment experiments were designed to assess this aim. Individual slugs were fed leaves of one of ten legume species together with winter wheat leaves for a 72-h period. A clear hierarchy of acceptability was shown, with red clover, lucerne, lupin and white clover showing significantly higher Acceptability Indices than the other six species tested. Red clover produced the greatest reduction in mean wheat consumption (78%) from day 1 to day 3. When species were fed individually, red clover was consumed in significantly greater quantities than any of the other treatments: 40% more than white clover and 56% more than wheat. Furthermore, when fed with red clover the amount of wheat consumed was some 50% less than when the latter was fed alone. The results indicate that legumes vary greatly in their acceptability to D. reticulatum and it is essential that a legume with a high Acceptability Index is chosen, which results in the least amount of wheat consumed.  相似文献

A number of chemical and biological agents are known as inducers of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) in tobacco plants. In the present study, a local spray application of the non-protein amino acid DL-β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) was effective in enhancing resistance to TMV in tobacco plants containing the N gene. In contrast, the isomer α-aminobutyric acid (AABA) showed a much lower activity whereas γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) was completely inactive, indicating a strong isomer specificity of aminobutyric acid in triggering enhanced virus resistance.Rapid cell death was detected in tobacco leaf tissues after foliar application of BABA, subsequently resulting in the development of macroscopically visible, necrotic lesions. BABA-induced cell death was associated with the rapid generation of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide. As further consequences, the occurrence of lipid peroxidation in treated tissues, a local and systemic increase of salicylic acid (SA) levels and the expression of PR-1a, a molecular marker of SAR in tobacco, could be observed. None of these responses was detectable after treatment with GABA.Enhancement of virus resistance by BABA was found to be strictly dependent on SA-mediated signal transduction since it could not be detected in salicylate hydroxylase (nahG) expressing transgenic tobacco plants. These findings suggest that in tobacco, primary processes triggered by foliar application of BABA, resemble those initiated by microbes during a hypersensitive response (HR) that result in SAR activation.  相似文献

Data collected in a three-year field experiment on infection and damage by Melampsora pinitorqua on maritime pines showing contrasting growth were analysed by means of path analysis. The severity of infection in 2 year-old pines could be mainly explained by the amount of susceptible tissues (elongating shoots). In contrast, two years later, intrinsic susceptibility, i.e. expressed after inoculation, was shown to have the most important direct effect on the amount of infection. Intrinsic susceptibility could be satisfactorily assessed by artificial inoculations on excised shoots under controlled conditions. Shoot potassium and phosphorous contents were shown to have marked positive effects on susceptibility. The hypothesis of an age effect on the relative importance of different resistance mechanisms, i.e. avoidance and active resistance, in maritime pine interaction with twisting rust is discussed.  相似文献

A monoclonal antibody (McAb), 4B8, was developed to whole homogenates of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), using hybridoma technology. It reacted with all the stages of BPH but did not cross-react with other insects and predator species tested with an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Immunodiffusion revealed it to belong to the IgG3 subclass. The ascites developed with 4B8?cell lines had high absorbance values until it was diluted over 6.5536?×?107 times tested by indirect ELISA. It could recognize the BPH proteins after one female was ingested by Pardosa pseudoannulata for about 2.13 days at 25°C. The results of extended antigen detection period and the high specificity of the antibody indicated that 4B8 could be used to study interactions between planthoppers and their predators in the field. Application of the McAb to assess relative importance of four major spider species in subtropical rice ecosystem showed that P. pseudoannulata was more important than Ummeliata insecticeps, and those were more important than Tetragnatha sp. and Coleosoma octomaculatum.  相似文献

Genetic resistance is the main tool used to manage clubroot of canola (Brassica napus) in Canada. However, the emergence of new virulent strains of the clubroot pathogen, Plasmodiophora brassicae, has complicated canola breeding efforts. In this study, 386 Brassica accessions were screened against five single-spore isolates (represented by pathotypes 2F, 3H, 5I, 6M and 8N on the Canadian Clubroot Differential Set) and 17 field isolates (represented by 12 unique pathotypes: 2B, 3A, 3D, 3O, 5C, 5G, 5K, 5L, 5X, 8E, 8J and 8P) of P. brassicae to identify resistance sources effective against these strains. The results showed that one B. rapa accession (CDCNFG-046, mean index of disease (ID) = 3.3%) and two B. nigra accessions (CDCNFG-263, mean ID = 3.1%; and CDCNFG-262, mean ID = 4.7%) possessed excellent resistance to all 22 of the isolates evaluated. Fifty other accessions showed differential clubroot reactions (resistant, moderately resistant or susceptible), including 27 (one B. napus, two B. rapa, four B. oleracea and 20 B. nigra) accessions that were each resistant to 8–21 P. brassicae isolates, but developed mean IDs in the range of 5.3–29.6%. The remaining 23 accessions (two B. napus, one Brapa, five Boleracea and 15 B. nigra) were each resistant to 3–13 isolates, but developed mean IDs in the range of 30.3–47.0%. The three accessions that showed absolute resistance and the 50 accessions that showed differential clubroot reactions could be used to breed for resistance to the new P. brassicae strains.  相似文献

Four N,N′-thiodicarbamate derivatives of carbofuran induced uncoupled convulsions with similar latencies following topical application to the cuticle of tethered SNAIDM house flies, despite considerable differences in their lipophilic properties. There was a small but statistically significant delay in the latency to response to the derivatives compared to carbofuran, but when perfused directly on the exposed thoracic ganglia to assess intrinsic activity, carbofuran acted up to 4.4 times faster than the derivative. It is suggested that the NS bond of the derivatives is cleaved soon after application to the house fly cuticle and carbofuran is released from each derivative in sufficient quantities to accumulate toxic concentrations in the central nervous system at similar rates.  相似文献

Seed dormancy contributes to species persistence in unpredictable environments and is a key process to be taken into account in weed dynamics models. As the level of seed dormancy, photosensitivity and the dates of dormancy induction and release are difficult to measure, our objective was to relate weed seed dormancy with morphological, chemical or physiological seed traits and with expert knowledge. Dormancy of four species was studied experimentally during a 2‐year seed burial experiment. Experiments were supplemented with data from the literature to increase the number of species analysed, resulting in a data set of 29 species. Proportions of non–dormant seeds were higher for elongated than spherical seeds, even when accounting for phylogenetic relatedness between species. Elongated seeds, which tend to remain on the soil surface in undisturbed habitats, may have been selected for lack of dormancy and immediate germination to limit mortality due to predation. Dormancy increased with seed coat thickness, which can act as a chemical and physical barrier to germination, while no relation was found with seed lipid or protein content. No correlation was found between photosensitivity parameters and any of the species traits analysed. Variations in dormancy dates (induction and release) were highly correlated with average field emergence season estimated from expert knowledge. The observed correlations suggest that the level of dormancy results both from direct and from indirect effects of traits being involved in trade‐offs together with seed mortality.  相似文献
