The elements V and Ni were determined in dustfall (settling particles), airborne dust and in soils at various points in the greater Tel-Aviv area between the years 1973 and 1984. Good correlations were found between measured distribution patterns for V and Ni in dustfall during the summer months and those predicted for settling particles from the Tel-Aviv power station (which burns heavy fuel oil) using a meteorological model based on diffusion from an elevated point source. The distribution patterns for V and Ni in dustfall collected in the Tel-Aviv area were very similar to those previously measured for SO2 and total S compounds. The concentration of V and Ni in soils also conforms to a pattern that points to the power station as a major source of these metals. It is suggested that V and Ni may be used as tracers for measuring the distribution of pollution from oil fired power stations. 相似文献

The major route of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) to humans is the intake through food. They enter the food chain principally by plants uptake from the soil and, to a less extent, through foliar deposition. The soil‐to‐plant transfer as part of the biogeochemical cycle of these elements is a complex and hardly predictable process. In this study, we investigated the capability of soils and plants to indicate PTEs inputs in an intermingled urban‐rural landscape of south Italy affected by legal and illegal waste disposal and dumping. For this aim, 172 agricultural soil and plant (edible part) samples were collected in pairs from 47 municipalities and analyzed for 12 PTEs (As, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Se, Tl, V, Zn). Soil extractions with 1 M NH4NO3 and 0.05 M EDTA pH 7 were applied to assess PTEs bioavailability. Results were examined according to plant species and main soil chemical properties. For Pb and Cd, the soil‐to‐plant transfer factors (TF) and the corresponding soil benchmark concentrations were also investigated. Zinc, Cu, Cd, and Pb were the only PTEs of anthropic origin severely polluting from 10 to 16% of the soils, but only in a very few cases exceeded physiological or EU legal critical values in the edible part of the plants. An evaluation of human risk due to the ingestion of these elements was tried; no risk for consumers for Zn, Cu, and Pb, while for Cd three values slightly exceeded the tolerable daily intake. Therefore, we conclude that crops cultivated in the studied area could represent only a moderate risk for human health. No correlation was found between soil and plant data, which likely highlights different pollution inputs. A large variability characterized the Pb and Cd TF, making it difficult to establish a unique benchmark concentration for the studied agricultural soils. 相似文献

We searched for predictive models for alpha, beta and gamma plant diversity based in easy to measure field indicators. The study was conducted on the upper belt of the Córdoba mountains (Argentina). We established 222 permanent plots of 4 × 4 m distributed on sites with different physiognomy, topography and management. At each plot we measured physical and physiognomic indicators and recorded the presence of all vascular plants. We estimated alpha diversity as the number of species detected in a plot, beta diversity as the floristic dissimilarity between two plots, and gamma diversity as the number of species detected in a landscape. Through linear regression we found predictive models for alpha and pair-wise beta diversity. Then we analysed if predicted average alpha and beta diversity were good estimators of gamma diversity. We recorded a total of 288 species (5-74 species per plot). Alpha diversity was highest in sites on shallow soils with high structural richness (i.e. high number of cover categories), half covered by lawns, at sunny slopes and rough landscapes (r2 = 0.66). For beta diversity, the difference between plots in structural richness and in cover of thick tussocks grasses and lawns were the best predictors (r2 = 0.45). For different sets of simulated landscapes, gamma diversity was well explained by predicted average alpha and beta diversity, plus the sampling effort (r2 = 0.92). Over the course of a year a series of samples were taken from a wastewater treatment plant handling domestic sewage at each stages of the process, to detect the presence of enteric viral and classical bacterial indicators, and physicochemical parameters. The viruses were isolated on BGM cell cultures and counted according to the Most Probable Number method. The values of enteric viruses varied from 102 to 104/L in raw sewage and from 100 to 103 in final effluent. The efficiency of the plant at each stages during processing was evaluated. The parameters analysed show a systematic reduction of values between input and output, with average bacteriological reductions of 88% (fecal streptococci), 93% (fecal coliforms) and 94% (total coliforms), viral load reduced by 0–99%. COD and suspended solids showed a reduction of 61 % and 71% respectively. The 40% of isolated viruses were submitted to identification procedures using molecular techniques and pools of antisera. The viral types identified were enteroviruses (poliovirus and coxsackievirus B) and reoviruses. Viruses appear less easily removed than classical bacterial indicators. Reoviruses were removed less efficiently than enteroviruses. 相似文献

In view of the unique biological characteristics of mangroves, it is interesting to assess the extent to which these ecosystems can be used as indicators of coastal change or sea-level rise. From recent studies of mangrove mortality at several locations (including Guiana, Gambia, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, India and Bangladesh), it appears that these coastal ecosystems are so specialized that any minor variation in their hydrological or tidal regimes causes noticeable mortality. Each species of mangrove (but particularly those belonging to the genera Rhizophora, Bruguiera, Sonneratia, Heritiera and Nypa) occurs in ecological conditions that approach its limit of tolerance with regard to salinity of the water and soil, as well as the inundation regime. If the duration of daily immersion were to be modified by tectonic, sedimentological or hydrological events, the species either readjusts to the new conditions or succumbs to unsuitable conditions. Consequently, the use of remote sensing data for mangrove ecosystems offers excellent potential as a tool for monitoring coastal change. 相似文献

Abstract. The presence of spring barley plants increased the numbers of nematodes, particularly of plant-feeders, compared with fallow plots in a Scottish organic farming system. The addition of farmyard manure (FYM) had no detectable effect on nematode populations but poultry manure (PM) caused a considerable increase. The application of PM also altered the types of nematode present and favoured bacterial-feeders and rhabditids in particular. These changes suggest that PM causes shortterm (within a growing season) increases in microbiological activity and nutrient cycling, whereas FYM is more likely to bring about long-term changes. 相似文献

A protozoological analysis of the biofilm developed on the discs of an RBC unit was performed using light microscopy; the species found belonged to 2 phyla: Sarcomastigophora with 23, and Ciliophora with 30 species. All isolates were free-living with the exception of Tritrichomonas fecalis. Most abundant species were: Euglena gracilis, Paramecium multimicronucleatum, Tetrahymena pyriformis, Polytoma uvella, Didinium nasutum, Bodo caudatus, Vorticella microstoma, Cyclidium glaucoma, Sathrophilus agitatus, Antophysa vegetans, and Urothrica farcta. Ciliates predominated over the flagellates in number and diversity. According to their locomotion most abundant species were free-swimming, followed by the attached, and crawling forms. In relation to their nutrition most frequent species were bacterivorous, saprozoic, and carnivorous. Values of the saprobic index calculated for each sampling station indicated that α-mesosaprobic conditions prevailed along the contactor with a zone of overlap with polysaprobic conditions at station IV. The RBC received an influent flow that varied from 1.5 to 13.5 L s?1 and a soluble BOD5 which range from 46 to 170 mg L?1. The contactor studied showed an overall BOD5 removal of 86% and a COD removal of 74%. DO levels influenced the values obtained for the saprobic index and the kind of protozoan populations and communities present. The biological findings (indicator species of the saprobic system), clearly reflected and agreed with the physicochemical results obtained simultaneously; the results showed that the system performed efficiently. 相似文献

Trophic groups and functional guilds of soil nematodes were measured under four mine tailing subsystems in the Baoshan lead/zinc mine, Hunan Province, southern China to test the indicator value of nematodes for heavy metal pollution. No obvious correlation was found between heavy metal concentration and the total number of nematodes. However, the densities of c–p3, c–p4 and c–p5 nematodes were negatively correlated with Pb and Zn concentrations, suggesting that the abundance of nematode groups of high c–p values is useful indicators of heavy metal contamination. The “weighted faunal analysis” provided a better assessment of soil health condition than Maturity Index (MI) in situations where there were extremely low numbers of soil nematodes. Results showed that the effect of heavy metal contamination on soil nematodes might be strongly influenced by plants. Although the abundance of plant-feeding nematodes did not reflect the heavy metal conditions in the soil, it might be used as an index for assessing the soil remediation potential of pioneering plants. Patrinia villosa seems superior to Viola baoshanensis as a pioneer plant species for soil remediation based on analysis of rhizosphere nematode community. 相似文献

It is well known that earthworm populations tend to increase under no-tillage (NT) practices, but abundances tend to be highly variable. In the present study, data from the literature together with those on earthworm populations sampled in six watersheds in SW Paraná State, Brazil, were used to build a classification of the biological soil quality of NT systems based on earthworm density and species richness. Earthworms were collected in 34 farms with NT aging from 3 to 27 yr, in February 2010, using an adaptation of the TSBF (Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility) Program method (hand sorting of five 20 cm × 20 cm holes to 20 cm depth). Six forest sites were also sampled in order to compare abundances and species richness with the NT systems. Species richness in the 34 NT sites and in the 6 forests ranged from 1 to 6 species. Most earthworms encountered were exotics belonging to the genus Dichogaster (D. saliens, D. gracilis, D. bolaui and D. affinis) and native Ocnerodrilidae (mainly Belladrilus sp.), all of small individual size. In a few sites, individuals of the Glossoscolecidae (P. corethrurus, Glossoscolex sp., Fimoscolex sp.) and Megascolecidae (Amynthas gracilis) families were also encountered, in low densities. Urobenus brasiliensis (Glossoscolecidae) were found only in the forest fragments. In the NT farms, earthworm abundance ranged from 5 to 605 ind m−2 and in the forest sites, from 10 to 285 ind m−2. The ranking of the NT soil biological quality, based on earthworm abundance and species richness was: poor, with <25 individuals per m−2 and 1 sp.; moderate, with ≥25–100 individuals per m−2 and 2–3 sp.; good, with >100–200 individuals per m−2 and 4–5 sp.; excellent, with >200 individuals per m−2 and >6 sp. About 60% of the 34 farms fell into the poor to moderate categories based on this classification, so further improvements to the NT farm's management system are needed to enhance earthworm populations. Agricultural, urban, forest and groundwater protection areas as well as nitrate and chloride concentrations are documented in maps. Areal distribution shows regionally elevated nitrate and chloride concentrations in connection with urban areas and agricultural use. Transport of nitrate and chloride tends to be conservative in the groundwater of the investigated area. Therefore, the elevated concentrations of these anions are suitable as indicators of anthropogenic impact on the groundwater. The average concentration of nitrate and chloride from all surveyed wells amounts to 26 and 17 mg L?1, respectively. It is shown that wells recharged through forests have lower nitrate and chloride concentrations (average: 21 and 13 mg L?1, respectively). Wells affected by waste deposits have an average nitrate concentration of 35 mg L?1 and chloride concentration of 24 mg L?1. Urban use results in an average value of 28 mg L?1 nitrate and 24 mg L?1 chloride. As nitrate and chloride concentrations are stable with respect to the depth of the groundwater table, degradation processes or other protective effects of the unsaturated zone can be omitted. 相似文献

Abstract. The disposal of water treatment sludge produced when turbid water is treated with flocculants (alum and polyDADMAC) and filtered for clarification is becoming increasingly expensive in South Australia. The physical and chemical properties of the sludge suggest that it might be used as a plant growth medium, and a glasshouse experiment compared the growth and elemental composition of broad beans in both alum and polyDADMAC sludge applied at different rates.
Dry matter production differed significantly between treatments. Poly + Fertilizer (F) and Poly 4%+ F produced the most dry matter. The Alum + F treatment produced significantly less dry matter than the Poly + F treatment but it was not significantly different from the control. The difference in plant growth between the pure poly and pure alum treatments resulted from increased availability of the fertilizer phosphorus in the poly sludge and the supply of some potassium and nitrogen by the poly sludge. Fertilizer was required for optimum plant growth. Greater rates of fertilizer may be required if alum sludge is to be used as a growth medium, than if poly sludge is used.
There was no evidence that aluminium toxicity would be a problem if water treatment sludges are used as growth media. Carbohydrate and furosine contents in 12 commercial fortified and special milk samples (pasteurized goat's and ewe's milks; ultrahigh-temperature (UHT) goat's milk, UHT milks fortified with calcium, magnesium, fiber, or royal jelly and honey; and lactose-hydrolyzed milks) were analyzed. Except for lactose-hydrolyzed milks, furosine, lactose, lactulose, galactose, glucose, N-acetylgalactosamine, N-acetylglucosamine, and myo-inositol contents were similar to the previously reported values for UHT or pasteurized milk samples. In lactose-hydrolyzed milks, lactulose was not detectable and lactose was present in low amount; high levels of glucose, galactose, fructose, tagatose, and furosine were also detected in this type of milk. Results found in commercial milks were compared to those obtained in laboratory-prepared UHT milks with lactose hydrolyzed prior to heating. Hydrolysis of lactose before thermal treatments promoted elevated accumulation of reducing sugars (galactose and glucose) that could be partially converted to the corresponding isomers (tagatose and fructose) during heating. In addition, the reducing sugars could also react with the amino groups of proteins, giving rise to the corresponding Amadori compound. According to the obtained results, heating prior to hydrolysis of lactose is suggested to avoid a considerable loss of available lysine. 相似文献

The streptococcal flora of two sewage treatment facilities, lakewater receiving effluent from a sewage treatment facility, and the feces of five animals were examined. An improved medium, designated M2 allowed the isolation of a total of 3314 streptococcal strains representing 17 species. Thirteen of these species were assembled into groups based upon similarities in ecology or physiology. Comparison of the proportions of these groups within samples from various sources allowed populations from human sources to be distinguished from animal derived populations. Finally, the streptococcal populations of three streams were examined and the concept of environmentally significant groups applied to define the types of contamination present. 相似文献

Fifteen plants species were grown in the greenhouse on the same soil and sampled at flowering to obtain rhizosphere soil and root material. In both fractions, the data on fungal and bacterial tissue obtained by amino sugar analysis were compared with the total microbial biomass based on fumigation-extraction and ergosterol data. The available literature on glucosamine concentrations in fungi and on muramic acid concentrations in bacteria was reviewed to prove the possibility of generating conversion values for general use in root material. All microbial properties analysed revealed strong species-specific differences in microbial colonisation of plant roots. The root material contained considerable amounts of microbial biomass C and biomass N, reaching mean levels of 10.9 and 1.4 mg g−1 dry weight, respectively. However, the majority of CHCl3 labile C and N, i.e. 89 and 55% was root derived. The average amount of ergosterol was 13 μg g−1 dry weight and varied between 0.0 for Phacelia roots and 45.5 μg g−1 dry weight for Vicia roots. The ergosterol content in root material of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plant species did not differ significantly. Fungal glucosamine was converted to fungal C by multiplication by 9 giving a range of 7.1-25.9 mg g−1 dry weight in the root material. Fungal C and ergosterol were significantly correlated. Bacterial C was calculated by multiplying muramic acid by 45 giving a range from 1.7 to 21.6 mg g−1 dry weight in the root material. In the root material of the 15 plant species, the ratio of fungal C-to-bacterial C ranged from 1.0 in mycorrhizal Trifolium roots to 9.5 in non-mycorrhizal Lupinus roots and it was on average 3.1. These figures mean that the microbial tissue in the root material consists on average of 76% fungal C and 24% bacterial C. The differences in microbial colonisation of the roots were reflected by differences in microbial indices found in the rhizosphere soil, most strongly for microbial biomass C and ergosterol, but to some extent also for glucosamine and muramic acid. 相似文献

Rills are indicators of erosion, easily recognized by farmers and extension workers. However, they are rare on fields in Mali with slopes of 0–3%, even though run‐off and sheet erosion may be a problem. The suitability of three other soil surface features as erosion indicators was therefore investigated: (1) structural crusts formed by rainfall impact without lateral soil movement; (2) in situ depositional crusts, formed by sedimentation leaving the finest particles on top; and (3) run‐off deposits of fine and coarse sand, formed after the removal of finer particles. Feature (1) occurred on the elevated parts and ridges, whereas (2) and (3) occurred in lower parts and in furrows. Soil cover with a run‐off deposit of coarse sand proved to be a suitable indicator and this was well explained by erosion risk: a 2% increase in slope related to a 9% increase in deposit cover. The extent of this deposit also related well to cotton yield from the previous season: a 30% increase in deposit cover was reflected in a 23% decrease in cotton yield. Only a few farmers confirmed that the deposits were produced by erosion. It is recommended that soil and water conservation programmes pay more attention to the presence of crusts and deposits. 相似文献

Alkylcyclobutanones have been recognized as chemical markers of irradiated lipid-containing foods since 1970. They are important because they are produced solely as a result of irradiation and not any other processing method. This study investigated the formation of 2-dodecylcyclobutanone (2-DCB) and 2-tetradec-5'-enylcyclobutanone (2-TDCB) in irradiated ground beef patties from commercial and noncommercial sources. Patties were irradiated using a (60)C source (gamma-irradiation) and electron beam irradiation, at five targeted absorbed doses of 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.0 kGy. Commercially available irradiated patties were also studied. A supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) procedure was optimized and used for the extraction and isolation of the alkylcyclobutanones. Samples can be used for extraction without a prior cleanup step, which makes this procedure rapid and convenient to use. Identification and quantitation of the cyclobutanones were done by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. 2-DCB was detected in all of the irradiated samples (including commercial patties), and its concentration increased linearly with the irradiation dose. Electron beam irradiation produced a greater amount of 2-DCB compared to gamma-irradiation at dose levels >2.5 kGy. 2-TDCB was detected only at the two higher irradiation doses, whereas both marker compounds were not detected in the non-irradiated samples. 相似文献
