Abstract

Domestic sewage sludge applied to farm fields at a rate of 44.9 kg/ha in a mixture with lime and sawdust was found to increase the soil levels of cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel and zinc. The average levels in sludge treated soil were: 0.11, 0.56, 3.59, 2.72, 0.068, 1.49 and 2.57 ppm, respectively. The increases were small and the overall loading factors were well below recommended maximums. The uptake of these heavy metals by grass and legume plants was variable with cadmium, copper and zinc levels being higher in those plants growing in the sludge treated soils but only copper was significantly higher. The heavy metal contents found were all within the levels normally found in grass and legume plants. The higher mean concentration in plants growing on the sludge treated soils were cadmium 0.495; chromium 1.22; copper 12.3; lead 1.54; mercury 0.022; nickel 4.08 and zinc 28.4 ppm.

Mercury was determined in 51 soil samples from historic base metal mining areas of England and Wales, together with cadmium, copper, lead, zinc, pH and organic content. Background mercury was calculated as 0.093 ppm whence 51% of the samples were judged to be contaminated. A very strong statistical correlation between mercury and lead and weaker but significant correlations between mercury and copper and zinc were found. Highest levels of mercury (maximum, 1.78 ppm Hg) and other metals occurred in soils derived from the floodplain of a river which was at one time badly polluted by mine waste. In a profile pit near a lead mine in the west of England both mercury and lead were enriched in surface horizons. It is concluded that land contaminated by heavy metals, especially lead, in the historic metal mining areas of England and Wales is also likely to be contaminated by mercury.

Effect of the heavy metals chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, mercury and lead on uptake and translocation of K and P by young barley plants The uptake of potassium and phosphate into the roots and shoots of 7 days old barley plants from double-labelled (42K, 32P) nutrient solutions containing chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, mercury or lead (10?6 - 10?4 moles/1) was measured in a constant environment after 5 hours, in order to compare early stages of toxicity. K and P uptake and translocation were inhibited by the 7 heavy metals to a different extent; K was more affected than P, and translocation of both nutrients into the shoots was more inhibited than uptake into the roots. Plants showed no visible injuries. Mercury had by far the greatest effect, zinc was almost ineffective: K uptake e.g. was reduced to 21% of the control by 10?4 moles Hg/l, but only to 97% by the same amount of Zn, and P translocation was reduced to 8% by Hg, but was not affected by Zn. The least significant effect of Hg was detectable at a concentration of 4.10?7 moles Hg/l ( = 0,08 ppm) in the nutrient solution, the effect of Zn only above 10?4 moles Zn/l ( = 6,5 ppm). Arranging the tested heavy metals according to their effects leads to the sequence Hg > Pb > Cu > Cd > Cr > Ni > Zn which corresponds – apart from two deviations – to the electrochemical series of the elements.

Derivative potentiometric stripping analysis (dPSA) was utilized to evaluate the Cd(II), Cu(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II) content in olive oil samples produced in Sicily in the crop year 2000-2001. The repeatability of the method was attested at 86.36% for cadmium, at 94.94% for copper, at 99.00% for lead, and at 98.92% for zinc. Recovery tests were carried out, both on cleanup procedures and on extraction steps, on olive oil spiked at different levels; obtained recoveries were 84.52 +/- 9.86 for cadmium, 97.34 +/- 2.72 for copper, 100.68 +/- 0.67 for lead and 83.35 +/- 1.72 for zinc. Theoretic detection limits were 1.2 ng g(-1) for Cd, 3.6 ng g(-1) for Cu, 5.9 ng g(-1) for Pb, and 14.3 ng g(-1) for Zn. Found concentrations range were 15.94-58.51 ng g(-1) for Cu, 32.64-156.48 ng g(-1) for Pb, and 157.00-385.22 ng g(-1) for Zn. Copper, lead, and zinc were found in all samples. The main advantage of this determination consists of a not too aggressive metals extraction procedure using hydrochloric acid, which avoids losses of elements typical of sample calcinations methods.

Results are reported for an interlaboratory study conducted to assess the reproducibility of analyses for lead, copper, cadmium, and zinc. The 10 participating laboratories analyzed 2 samples of freeze-dried clam tissue and 1 disguised sample of NBS Oyster Tissue. Interlaboratory variations were observed for all metals, although the methods yielded reproducible data for Cu and Zn with average interlaboratory coefficients of variation of 15 and 11%, respectively. The performance of methods used for Cd and, more so, for Pb was less than satisfactory. Cadmium levels in the 3 samples ranged from about 0.7 to 3.7 ppm with an average interlaboratory coefficient of variation (CV) of 24%. Lead levels in the 3 samples were about 0.5 ppm with an interlaboratory CV of 68%. Some laboratories' results were consistently high or low but data were insufficient to relate these trends to one particular variable. Results from this study were compared with 5 other studies reported in the literature since 1980. Coefficients of variation from all studies were comparable for samples with similar metal concentrations.

Short- and long-term effects of heavy metals on urease activity in soils
Summary The inhibitory effects of cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc on urease activity of five different soils during two different periods were investigated, in order to obtain information on the change in heavy metal toxicity with time. The results are presented graphically as logistic dose-response curves. When the ecological dose range was used as a measure of toxicity this value decreased significantly only for copper in the sandy soil. Considering toxicity as the ecological dose-50% (ED50) value, toxicity tended to increase over 1 1/2 years for cadmium, copper and zinc. For nickel and lead, however, the toxicity stabilized in all soils, except in sand and clay. The average ED 50 value of zinc varied between 100 and 300 mg kg–1 and its toxicity was highest. It is emphasized that these data may help to set limits for the heavy-metal pollution of soils.

Comparisons were made of the accumulation of cadmium, copper, manganese, lead, and zinc in Plagiothecium denticulatum, Bryum argenteum and Sphagnum sp. in Shillong, Meghalaya State, Northeastern India. Samples of P. denticulatum and B. argenteum were collected inside Shillong city (urban) and its immediately adjacent outskirts (suburban), while Sphagnum sp. was collected from a suburban site only. Lead and copper levels were higher in P. denticulatum, while Sphagnum sp. accumulated higher amounts of zinc, manganese, and cadmium. An urban-suburban gradient was evident for lead and zinc in P. denticulatum, and for cadmium in B. argenteum, while a reverse trend could be discerned for manganese in P. denticulatum. Besides vehicles and minor industries, quarry dust was likely to be an important source of manganese, copper, and zinc.

Flameless atomic absorption spectroscopy with a carbon rod atomizer was used to determine lead, cadmium, and chromium in whole-fish samples. Samples were dry-ashed, and the metals were separated by solvent extraction with ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate in methyl isobutyl ketone, and then back-partitioned into an aqueous acid solution for analysis. The back-partitioning step allows a direct comparison of sample solutions with aqueous solutions of the standard. Recoveries of the metals from fortified samples averaged 91% (+/-9.6) for lead and 100% (+/-5.6) for chromium at the 0.1-1 ppm level, and 100% (+/-13.3) for cadmium at the 0.01-0.1 ppm level.

A screening method for determination of cadmium, lead, and copper in foods was developed. The sample (1-3 g) is digested with HNO3-H2SO4-HClO4 in a centrifuge tube attached to a straight glass tube that prevents loss of HNO3 by volatilization. After digestion, potassium iodide, H2SO4, and MIBK (4-methyl 2-pentanone) are added, and the metals are extracted with MIBK as metal iodides. The MIBK solution is injected and the metals are determined by flame polarized Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry using a discrete nebulization technique. Recoveries of metals from fortified milk powder, unpolished rice, fish, beef, peanut butter, apple, and cabbage were satisfactory. The analytical results for NBS Oyster Tissue and NIES Pepperbush, Chlorella, and Mussel agreed with certified or reference values except lead in Pepperbush. The limits of quantitation for cadmium, lead, and copper were 0.01, 0.09, and 0.02 ppm, respectively. This method is simple and safe for routine analysis of high levels of cadmium, lead, and copper in foods.

A method is described for the simultaneous determination of several heavy metals in foods. The sample is predigested with nitric acid and decomposed completely by heating with a mixture of sodium and potassium nitrates. The resultant melt containing the metals is then dissolved in dilute nitric acid. After the pH is adjusted to an appropriate value, the metals, such as cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc, are determined by anodic stripping voltammetry. The average recoveries of these metals added to 5 commodities were 98, 98,96, and 104%, respectively. The relative standard deviations, based on data from analyses of a commodity containing measurable levels of copper, lead, and zinc, were 12.0, 13.0, and 9.7%, respectively.

This paper presents the levels of available amounts of zinc, copper, and molybdenum as measured by Asp. niger (Mulder strain) in soils of Japan with special regard to their threshold values. Results obtained are as follow: 1) Levels of available zinc in soils examined ranged from 0.4 to 27 ppm. The threshold value for available zinc is adequelty represented as a function of the soil pH value, and was estimated to be around “0.5 × (soil pH value)-0.5” ppm (soil pH value >1). 2) Levels of available copper in soils examined ranged from 0.3 to 5 ppm, and the threshold value for available copper lies near 0.5 ppm. However, the value is more suitably represented as a function of the soil carbon content. This value was shown to be around “0.1 × (carbon % in the soil)” ppm. 3) Levels of available molybdenum in soils examined ranged from 0.01 to 0.13 ppm with the average about 0.10 ppm. The threshold value for available molybdenum is well expressed as a function of the soil pH. The value was estimated to be around “-0.04 × (soil pH value)+0.30” ppm (soil pH value <7.5).

A study was conducted as a split-plot arrangement based on a randomized complete block design with three replications to test sewage sludge (SS) influence on yield and phytoavailability of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) by rice. The results indicated that fertilizer (main factor) and application periods (subfactor) affected studied traits. Three years of application of 40 ton ha?1 SS + 50% chemical fertilizer (CF) gave the greatest paddy yield. The greatest Cu uptake by grain (10.38 ppm) occurred with 3 years application of 20 ton ha?1 SS. With application of 40 ton ha?1 SS + 50% CF, the greatest contents of Cd in root and Pb in shoots were recorded. The greatest accumulations of Cd in shoot and Zn in grain (30.56 and 25.81 ppm, respectively) were determined with the 20 ton ha?1 SS treatment, as well. The greatest concentrations of Pb and Cd in grain (102.2 and 14.78 ppm, respectively) and Pb in root (552.2 ppm) were obtained with 3 years of application of 40 ton ha?1 SS + 50% CF.

Silver, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, mercury, lead, and zinc were determined monthly during 2004–2008 at 11 sites in the Kura–Araks river system, Azerbaijan. Suspended fractions of the elements were studied at the five sites experiencing the highest load. Metal concentrations varied moderately at each site but differed substantially between sites. Sites near the borders with Armenia and Georgia were most polluted, both with respect to soluble concentrations and percentage transported in suspended form. Lower parts of the Kura river were shielded from metal contamination by an upstream reservoir acting as a metal trap. Corresponding removal was not evident in Araks, its main tributary, where particularly high concentrations of arsenic were observed. At the most contaminated sites, more than 60% of cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, manganese, nickel, lead, and zinc was transported in suspended form whereas arsenic and molybdenum occurred mainly in soluble form. Dynamics of metals in the Kura–Araks water/sediment system should be further studied to meet future problems.

The present paper is a study of the heavy metal contamination ofnatural soils due to atmospheric transport in the northern partof Eastern Carpathians. The study area is located north of BaiaMare, the main Romanian centre for processing complex sulphideores. Ten undisturbed soil profiles of andosols and andic soilswere investigated. The distribution of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn,Mn, Ni, Co, Cr and Cd) was studied along the soil profile and atspecific distances from the pollution sources. In addition tothe total nitric acid soluble fraction of the metals, amounts oflead, copper, zinc and manganese extractable with 0.05 Mhydrochloric acid were determined to evaluate the fraction ofeach metal potentially available to plants. Surface soils in theIgnis Mountains (10 km from Baia Mare) were more polluted withlead (200–800 ppm), with the concentration decreasing withdistance from the processing plants. Lower lead concentrationswere observed in the deeper soil horizons. The fraction of leadextractable in 0.05 M hydrochloric acid was generally higher athigh total concentrations of lead. From its geographical andsoil profile distributions it is also evident that cadmium wasalso supplied in appreciable amounts to the topsoil from thesame polution sources, whereas the trend was weaker for zincand chromium and not evident for copper, manganese, nickel, orcobalt. The fraction extractable with 0.05 M hydrochloric acidgenerally followed the order Pb > Cu > Zn > Mn.

Heavy metals in surface soils of the Warta river valley in an urban area In the urban area of the city of Poznan the contamination with heavy metals was investigated. From the top soil layers of five cross-sections of the valley of the Warta river 87 samples were collected. Beside common soil characteristics the contents of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, phosphorus and zinc were analyzed. Predominantly the level of contamination with heavy metals is low in the valley soils. A higher level was found in the area of the old city centre. Especially the contents of lead, copper and zinc were raised. Downstream of the sewage plant discharge into the river Warta increased contents of lead and cadmium were found. The distribution of heavy metals in the river Warta sediments indicates that the reason of the local increase of heavy metal contents is the sewage water discharge, Correlations between the content of different heavy metals and other soil properties (pH, clay and P-content, C/N-ratio) were calculated.

This paper presents the results of determining the pseudo-total concentration of five heavy metals in the soil on which the destruction of ammunition, mines, and explosive devices is carried out by the method of open detonation. In the analyzed area, the concentrations of cadmium, lead, nickel, copper, and zinc were determined, while from the physical properties of the soil were determined the granulometric composition and the pH. The aim of the study is to determine the origin and total load on heavy metals and, based on that, to assess the dangers and impact of the site in terms of the soil pollution by heavy metals. In accordance with the regulations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the results of the soil testing showed a significant load of copper (up to seven times) and cadmium (up to six times), and exceeding the allowed values for nickel and zinc in some places. Lead was the only metal whose concentration was within the maximum allowed and according to that the soil was classified as unpolluted. A sample of soil from the edge of the pit is the only sample in which all heavy metals, except Ni, were within the maximum allowable concentration. In regard to the concentration of the examined metals, the soil of the pit is classified as medium polluted from the aspect of copper, cadmium, and nickel and highly contaminated with zinc. The concentrations of copper and zinc in the examination area correspond to contaminated soil that represents ecological risk, which requires soil remediation.

A closed vessel microwave digestion procedure was developed for shellfish samples. This procedure was compared with wet and dry ash procedures for levels of lead, cadmium, chromium, copper, and zinc. Results obtained for microwave and conventional wet ash digestion were comparable. The dry ashing procedure produced results consistently lower than either of the other methods. Recoveries ranged from 80-92% for microwave and wet ashing procedures and 54-72% for the dry ashing procedure. Accuracy was also determined by analyzing lobster hepatopancreas marine reference material. Values for Pb, Cd, and Cr fell within the range specified for the reference material for all 3 digestion procedures; however, values were lower for Cu and Zn. Results of this study show that microwave digestion is comparable to wet ashing.
