Saplings of Tamarindus indica, Mangifera indica, Pithecolobium dulce, Ficus rumphii, Ficus bengalensis, Holoptelea integrifolia, Syzygium cumind, and Psidium guajava were exposed to varying concentrations of SO2 and chlorophyll, protein, amino acids, starch, total soluble sugars and reducing sugars were determined. In general, it was observed that on exposure to SO2 in susceptible plants most of the biochemical constituents accumulated in higher amounts while in plants showing visible damage at extremely high exposure concentration a reverse pattern was obtained.  相似文献

Many areas of NE-Bavarian Mountains experience relatively high SO2 concentrations (between 60 and 1400 μg m?3). Since 1980,Picea abies, Abies alba, andLarix decidua have exhibited needle tipchlorosis and necrosis. Affected trees usually occur on acid soils above 700 m. Needles of affected trees ofP. abies had ample N, P concentrations. However, needle concentrations of Mg were very low, those of Ca, K, Zn of affected trees were relatively low. Although Al, Fe, and Cu concentrations were in the normal range, usually S concentrations were above the toxicity threshold. In the same region low concentrations of Mg were present in foliage ofAbies alba, Larix decidua, Fagus sylvatica, andAcer platanoides that exhibited visible leaf injury. Although some slight changes in water relations occurred, the present evidence suggests that Mg — deficiency may result from acid deposition and that this mineral deficiency may be responsible for tree injury.  相似文献

The mechanism of SO2 inhibition of photosynthesis in intact leaves of tomato and maze was studied to evaluate SO2 inhibition of photorespiration. Leaf tissues were fumigated with SO2 under photorespiratory (low CO, and/or high O, concentrations) and non-photo-respiratory conditions. When tomato leaf disks were fumigated with 10 ppm SO2 at 2, 21 and 100° o O., SO2 inhibited photosynthesis at 2% O2 in the same degrees as at 21% O2. SO2 inhibition of photosynthesis was depressed at higher CO2 concentrations when the disks were fumigated with SO2 at different CO2 concentrations. High CO2 concentrations also reduced the photosynthesis inhibition of maize leaf disks. These results suggest that SO2 inhibits photosynthesis through other mechanisms than photorespiration inhibition and confirm the view that SO2 competes with CO2 for the carboxylating enzymes in photosynthesis  相似文献

Two lettuce cultivars (Lactuca sativa L., cv. Calmar and cv. Climax) were selected to compare their tolerance to salt stress. The plants were grown in a hydroponic system using a 0.5 modified Hoagland solution. Treatments of 0, 40, 80, and 120 mol m–3 NaCl or 0 and 20 mol m–3 Na2SO4 were started when the second leaf above the cotyledons appeared. The plants were harvested 20 days later. Climax showed a greater tolerance to salinity at the 40 mol m–3 NaCl concentration; the % decrease in both shoot and root fresh weight was significantly less than Calmar. No differences between the cultivars were found in the Na2SO4 experiments. Differences in root Cl content at the 40 mol m–3 concentration corresponded to an enhanced water content of the roots. A mechanism for the observed differences in salt tolerance between the two cultivars is discussed.  相似文献

A total of 82 samples of wet and total deposition were sampled near the limestone cathedral at Mechelen, Belgium, which is presently being affected seriously by air pollution, and at a reference site. Most of these samples were analyzed for 10 major and 7 trace ions in solution and for 15 elements in suspension. It appeared that calcite, released from the building, effectively neutralizes the rainwater in the near vicinity and produces high Ca and bicarbonate concentrations. Heavy metal concentrations are hardly affected by the building.  相似文献

Cd sorption isotherms (n = 24) were established for arable, sandy soils of the ‘Fuhrberger Feld’ catchment area northeast of Hannover (Germany) using 0.01 Mc Ca(NO3)2 solution with Cd additions ranging from 0 to 44 μMc Cd. Alternative fractions of initially (prior to analysis) sorbed Cd (S0) were added to the amount sorbed during the experiments. The Freundlich equation was fitted to the resulting isotherms. The obtained retention parameters k and M varied with respect to the different S0 fractions. Isotherms corrected with CdEDTA as S0 fraction were nonlinear in their log-form. The highest degree of log-linearity is obtained if S0 is characterized by 40% of the agua regia extractable Cd. The corresponding k values ranged from 36 to 1275 g1-M LM kg?1 (mean 338 g1-M LM kg?1, cv = 92%). The Freundlich exponent M showed less variation (0.7 to 1.1, cv = 12%) with a mean of 0.88. Functions based on these parameters predicted Cd concentrations in Ca(NO3)2?soil suspensions well (r2 = 0.96) but were hardly related to Cd concentrations of ‘fresh’ soil solutions (r2 = 0.20).  相似文献

During the period from 25 May 1991 to 30 May 1992 the atmospheric concentrations and depositions of oxides of sulfur were continuously measured in a suburban masson pine forest which is currently experiencing severe dieback, in Chongqing, China. The annual mean concentrations of SO2 and particulate SO4 2? were 220 μ g/m3 (77 ppbv) and 32 μ g/m3 respectively. The atmospheric concentrations of these sulfur compounds were high in late autumn and winter. The annual wet and dry depositions of sulfur to the forest as measured by throughfall and stemflow were 93.1 and 46.6 kgSha?1a?1 respectively. These depositions are among the highest level ever reported in the world. Althogh the cause of the dieback of the masson pine trees has not been unequivocally determined, it is probable that the direct impact of SO2 is more likely the cause than acid deposition.  相似文献

Oilseed production can be affected in arid and semi-arid regions that are exposed to water shortages. Nevertheless, cultivation of drought-resistant crops such as Indian mustard is a suitable way to gain acceptable yields. Effects of different levels of irrigation and sulfur (S) fertilizer on the quantity and quality parameters of mustard (Brassica juncea) were assessed in a trial at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, during 2007–2008 and 2008–2009 growing seasons. The experiment was carried out in a split plot as randomized complete block design with three replications. The experiment treatments consisted of three irrigation levels [no irrigation, one irrigation at 45 days after sowing (DAS), and two irrigations at 45 DAS and 90 DAS] in main plots and four sulfur levels (S; 0, 15, 30, and 45 kg S ha?1) in subplots. The results showed that in the two successive years of the experiment, the number of siliquae/plant, length of siliqua, number of seeds/siliqua, and 1000-seed weight increased significantly with increasing the level of irrigation, which resulted in greater seed yield than no irrigation. Also, mustard plants irrigated two times showed the greatest values of nitrogen (N), protein, and oil content of the seeds over no irrigation in both years of this study. The oil yield and S content in the seed of mustard increased significantly with increasing the level of irrigation in both years. Number of siliquae/plant, siliqua length, number of seed/siliqua, and 1000-seed weight increased significantly with increasing the rates of S up to 45 kg S ha?1 in both years of experimentation; however, in 2008–2009 the difference between application of 30 and 45 kg ha?1 S was not statically significant. Also, the seed yield, N, protein, oil, and S contents in seeds of mustard increased significantly with increase in the level of applied S in both years.  相似文献

Experiments that investigated the performance of nine tree species planted in pulverized fuel ash (PFA) and gypsum power stattion wastes are described. Lombardy and white poplars, common alder and false acacia were the most successful in gypsum and PFA-gypsum mixtures, but tree growth in pure PFA was unsatisfactory. Co-disposal of gypsum and PFA is the best means of promoting the growth of tolerant species planted in power station wastes. Tree performance is improved if these materials are covered by a soil layer, which promotes tree rooting into the underlying wastes.  相似文献

Photosynthesis decreases reversibly in plants exposed to SO2. Photosynthesis recovers when the exposure to SO2 is discontinued. Inactivation of a photosynthetic enzyme, ribulose-1,5-diphosphate carboxylase, by sulfonation of its SH groups was investigated as a cause of the reversible reduction of photosynthesis. The relationship between the sulfite ion concentration in the reaction mixture and 14CO2 fixation catalized by the enzyme which was prepared from alfalfa leaves was explored by using radioactive NaHCO3. About 50% and 85% inhibitions of 14CO2 fixation were observed at 3 × 10?3 M and 3 × 10?2 M concentration of sulfite ion in the reaction mixture, respectively. The accumulation of 3 × 10?4 M sulfite ion on the reaction site of the enzyme involved in the plants which were exposed to SO2 could considerably reduce the CO2 assimilation of the plant.  相似文献

Integrated exposure rates for SO2 of a standardized physico-chemical receptor and corresponding SO2 concentrations and meteorological variables have been measured at various sites in the state of Northrhine Westphalia, Germany from 1982 to 1986. The dependence of exposure rates and deposition velocities of the receptor on SO2 concentration and meteorological variables has been investigated within the framework of various regression models. A contribution of prime importance to exposure rates of the product of SO2 concentrations and the square root of wind velocities averaged over exposure time has been established. The model explains 87% of variation. Deposition velocities for this receptor turn out to be of the order of 1 cm s ?1. A corresponding regression model between deposition velocities and the square root of wind velocities unexpectedly explains only a minor amount of variation of this quantity.  相似文献

Sorption of Cd at low concentrations onto two Danish soils (loamy sand, sandy loam) was examined in terms of kinetics and governing factors. From an environmental point of view soil sorption of Cd is a fast process: More than 95% of the sorption takes place within 10 min, equilibrium is reached in 1 hr, and exposures up to 67 wk did not reveal any long term changes in Cd sorption capacities. The soils have very high affinity for Cd at pH = 6.00 (10?3 M CaCl2) exhibiting distribution coefficients in the order of 200 to 250 (soil Cd concentration/solute Cd concentration). However, the sorption isotherms describing the distribution of Cd between soil and solute are slightly curvelinear. In the pH-interval 4 to 7.7, the sorption capacity of the soil approximately increases 3 times for a pH increase of one unit. Increasing the Ca concentration from 10?3 to 10?2 M reduces the sorption capacity of the sandy loam to one third.  相似文献

Dry deposition velocity estimates of SO, HNO3 and SO4 2? were computed for six locations in eastern North America using two different inferential models; a Big-Leaf model utilized by the U. S. National Dry Deposition Network (NDDN) and, a land-use based model (LUM) that has been used in the past to estimate the relative importance of dry versus wet deposition over selected Canadian regions. There were consistent differences between models that were related to the surface type, chemical species and time of year. Mean monthly dry deposition velocities based upon the 1990–91 time period were compared at two locations. The seasonal cycles in deposition velocity were similar between models, but there were considerable differences in the amplitude of the cycles. The LUM predicted about a 400% increase in S042- deposition velocity from the winter to the summer months, while there was a 50 to 100% increase in the NDDN model estimates, depending upon location. According to the LUM, HN03 deposition to crop land increased by about a factor of 6 from winter to summer, while the big leaf model predicted a 50% increase. Overall, there was better agreement for SO2. Averaged over 12 months, the differences in deposition velocity between models were smaller and generally within the range of uncertainty associated with inferential models. For all six sites, the mean percent difference between models in deposition velocity for SO2, HNO3 and SO4 2? were 13, 35 and 79, respectively. These differences highlight the effect of using different methods for estimating dry deposition and the importance of applying the same model when examining regional patterns in dry/total deposition rates.  相似文献

On-farm studies were conducted during 2002–2004 to determine fertility status, including sulfur (S) and micronutrients, and crop response to fertilization on farmers' fields in the semi-arid zone of India. Nine hundred-twenty four soil samples taken from farmers' fields, spread in the three districts of Andhra Pradesh (India), were analyzed for soil chemical fertility parameters. Results showed that samples were low in organic carbon (C), total nitrogen (N), and low to moderate in extractable phosphorus (P), but adequate in available potassium (K). Analyses of soil samples for extractable S and micronutrients was most revealing and showed that 73–95% of the farmers' fields were deficient in S, 70–100% in boron (B), and 62–94% in zinc (Zn). On-farm trials conducted during three seasons (2002–2004) showed significant yield responses of maize, castor, groundnut, and mung bean to the applications of S, B, and Zn. The yield responses were larger when S, Zn, and B were applied along with N and P. Applications of S, B and Zn also significantly increased the uptake of N, P, K, S, B, and Zn in the crop biomass. Results show widespread deficiencies of S, B, and Zn under dryland agricultural conditions; results also show that the nutrient deficiencies can be diagnosed by soil testing. It was concluded that the drylands in the semi-arid regions of India were not only thirsty (water shortage), but also hungry (nutrient deficiencies).  相似文献

Manganese dioxide (birnessite) was coated with two levels of Fe and Al oxides and CaCO3, and the influence of these coatings on the surface features and the reactivity of MnO2 with respect to the oxidation and sorption of As(III) (arsenite) was examined. For all untreated and coated MnO2 samples, the depletion (oxidation plus sorption) of As(III) by the samples follows first-order kinetics. The rate constants are smaller for the samples with the high levels of coating of Fe and Al oxides and CaCO3 on MnO2 than they are for the untreated MnO2 and the MnO2 with the low levels of coating. The extent of masking of the electron-accepting sites on the MnO2 for converting the toxic As(III) to the less toxic As(V) significantly varies with the kinds and levels of coatings. Coatings of Fe and A1 oxides and CaCO3, on MnO2 distinctively affect the sorption of As. Manganese oxide evidently catalyzes the sorption of As by Al oxide through oxidation of As(III) to As(V). The relative affinities of the oxides of Mn, Fe, and Al and CaCO3, toward As(III) and As(V) account for the coating effects.  相似文献

Abstract

Twelve soils with low‐medium phosphorus (P) retention capacities were equilibrated for 3 months with soluble phosphate at a rate of 100 mg P kg‐1 soil. The P sorption properties of these soils both with and without added P were studied, including equilibrium P concentration (EPCo), standard P requirement (SPR), soil P sorption capacity (b), maximum buffer capacity (MBC), and P sorption index (P‐SI). In general, the soils with no added P showed low values of all the above parameters. Oxalate extractable aluminum appeared to be the major responsible element for the control of P sorption in these soils. The addition of P to these soils had a considerable effect on their P sorption properties. The changes in EPCo were well correlated with P sorption index (r=0.80; p≤0.01 ). The EPCo values of the soils with and without added P were closely correlated to bicarbonate extractable P (P0lsen) and calcium chloride extractable P (PCaC12), with r=0.80, and r=0.99 (p≤0.001), respectively. Ninety percent of the variability in EPCo was explained by the corresponding variability in POlsen when a curvilinear relationship was adopted. The P sorption properties examined appear to be useful parameters to assess the environmental impact of soil P on the quality of surface waters.  相似文献

A nested-network program for obtaining data on the dry deposition of SO2 and SO4 ? has been initiated at a small array of locations (6 in 1985, presently 13) across North America. The procedures involved rely on the availability of models for deriving dry deposition rates from observations of air concentrations and of meteorological and surface properties known to influence the deposition velocity. At a subset of locations (i.e., 3), the results obtained by this indirect method are tested by comparison against more direct methods. One of the first comparison experiments of this series was conducted at Oak Ridge in July 1985 when the fluxes determined by inferential methods were compared to those measured by eddy correlation. The results obtained suggest that initial computer routines, developed to estimate deposition velocity for SOz on a routine basis, overestimate the deposition velocity by about 20% to a mixed-species deciduous forest. The difference is possibly due to the omission of water stress as a contributing factor in the initial computer routines, but might also be associated with chemical processes at the substomatal level.  相似文献
