Abstract. The saline–sodic soils of the dryland Songnen Plain in northeast China are only slowly permeable to fresh water because of their large content of montmorillinite clay and sodium bicarbonate. Use of slightly saline groundwater containing adequate dissolved calcium and magnesium for leaching and reclamation can potentially prevent dispersion of the clay soil particles during treatment. Amelioration was evaluated using shallow, mildly saline groundwater to irrigate sorghum–corn rotations in a two-year field experiment. After two growing seasons during which a total of 400 mm of leaching water was applied, in addition to some supplemental irrigation water, the average electrical conductivity (ECe) of the top 1.2 m of the soil profile decreased from 14.5±3.5 to 2.7±0.2 dS m−1, and the sodium absorption ratio (SARe) decreased from 35.3±4.1 to 10.1±2.5 (meq L−1)0.5. The soil physical properties were improved: infiltration rate with mildly saline groundwater increased from 12.1 to 42 mm h−1. Salinity changes in the top 1.2 m of soil layers after 700 mm of leaching produced no further improvement. Crop yields produced on plots undergoing amelioration increased by 64–562% compared with the rainfed control. The improved soil conditions after leaching resulted in 59–548% greater crop yields.  相似文献

Calcium carbonates and gypsum are often used to improve the chemical status of acid soils. This study discusses the effects of gypsum and polyacrylamide (PAM) application on infiltration and erodibility of a Japanese acid soil. Acid Kunigami mahji soil (sedimentary rock derived, Typic Hapludult) from Okinawa was packed into an acrylic plastic box, and simulated rainfall of 40 mm h−1 was applied. Prior to the rainfall, 2.5 t ha−1 of gypsum and/or 15 kg ha−1 of non-ionic or anionic PAM were applied onto soil surface. During a rainfall, surface runoff was collected periodically, and sediment concentration, pH, and electric conductivity of the runoff were measured. Gypsum application enhanced surface runoff. During the rainfall, EC of the runoff was greater than the critical coagulation concentration of the clays of the mahji soil, however the soil became dispersive with gypsum application. PAM application could improve infiltration of gypsum amended mahji soil and reduce sediment loss.  相似文献

Abstract. The effects of various fallow management systems and cropping intensities on water infiltration were measured on an Alfisol at Ibadan in southwestern Nigeria. The objective was to determine the influence of the land use systems (a combination of crop–fallow sequences and intercropping types) on soil hydraulic properties obtained by disc permeameter and double-ring infiltration measurements. The experiment was established in 1989 as a split-plot design with four replications. The main plots were natural fallow, planted Pueraria phaseoloides and planted Leucaena leucocephala . The subplots were 1 year of maize/cassava intercrop followed by 3-year fallow (25% cropping intensity), or 2-year fallow (33% cropping intensity), or 1-year fallow (50% cropping intensity), or no fallow period (100% cropping intensity). Water infiltration rates and sorptivities were measured under saturated and unsaturated flow. Irrespective of land use, infiltration rates at the soil surface (121–324 cm h−1) were greater than those measured at 30 cm depth (55–144 cm h−1). This indicated that fewer large pores were present below 30 cm depth compared with 0–30 cm depth. Despite some temporal variation, sorptivities with the highest mean value of 93.5 cm h−½ increased as the cropping intensity decreased, suggesting a more continuous macropore system under less intensive land use systems. This was most likely due to continuous biopores created by perennial vegetation under long fallow systems. Intercropped maize and cassava yields also increased as cropping intensity decreased. The weak relationship between crop yields and hydraulic conductivity/infiltration rates suggests that the rates were not limiting.  相似文献

Abstract. Hydraulic properties of soils after rice cropping are generally unfavourable for wheat cultivation. Poor drainage, delayed planting and oxygen stress in the root zone may adversely affect the wheat crop after lowland rice cultivation. We studied long-term effects of lantana ( Lantana spp. L.) residue additions at 10, 20 and 30 t ha−1 yr−1 (fresh biomass) on physical properties of a silty clay loam soil under rice–wheat cropping in northwest India. At the end of ten cropping cycles, soil water retention, infiltration rate, saturated hydraulic conductivity and drying rate of soil increased significantly with lantana additions. The available water capacity (AWC), on volume basis, declined at rice harvest (from 22.0 to 18.8–20.9%), but increased at wheat harvest (from 12.9 to 13.4–15.0%) after lantana treatment. The volumes of water transmission (>50 μm) and storage pores (0.5–50 μm) were greater, while the volume of residual pores (<0.5 μm) was smaller in lantana-treated plots than in controls at both rice and wheat harvest. Infiltration rate in the lantana-treated soil was 1.6–7.9 times that of the control (61 mm d−1) at rice harvest, and 2–4.1 times that of the control (1879 mm d−1) at wheat harvest. Thus lantana addition improved soil hydraulic properties to the benefit of the wheat crop in a rice–wheat cropping sequence.  相似文献

Amelioration of a highly alkaline soil by trees in northern India   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Abstract. A study was carried out to compare the impact of 6-year-old plantations of Prosopis juliflora (Swartz) D.C., Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. Ex. D.C. and Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. on the physical and chemical properties of sodic soil in the Indo-Gangetic alluvial plains of Uttar Pradesh, India. Soil properties under the three tree species showed significant improvement through a reduction in the pH, electrical conductivity, exchangeable sodium percentage, CaCO3 and gypsum requirement, and by increase in organic C, total N, and available P and K. The six years of reclamation had achieved a marked reduction in exchangeable sodium (from 11.5 to 4.5 cmolc kg−1) to a depth of 1.5 m in the soil profile, whereas the levels of exchangeable calcium, magnesium and potassium had increased. There was also a significant reduction in soil bulk density (from 1.66 to 1.24 g cm−3) and increases in porosity, water holding capacity, field capacity, permeability and infiltration rate. The equilibrium infiltration rate after 455 min increased from 0.03 cm h−1 in the control to 0.13 cm h−1 under P juliflora and D. sissoo and 0.10 cm h−1 under E. tereticornis . It is concluded that salt-tolerant tree species have a significant impact on soil properties, which could help to rehabilitate the sodic wastelands in the region.  相似文献

Abstract. Over a 10-year period, runoff and soil erosion on the plots of the Woburn Erosion Reference Experiment were concentrated in periods with sparse vegetation cover: in winter after the late planting of cereals; in spring after the planting of beets; or when soils were bare after harvest. The mean event runoff of 1.32 mm from plots cultivated up-and-downslope was significantly greater ( P <0.05) than that from plots cultivated across-slope (0.82 mm). However, mean event soil loss was not significantly different between the two cultivation directions. No significant differences were found between minimal and standard cultivations. Mean event runoff from the across-slope/minimal tillage treatment combination (0.58 mm) was significantly less ( P <0.01) than from the up-and-downslope/minimal tillage (1.41 mm), up-and-downslope/standard tillage (1.24 mm), and across-slope/standard tillage (1.07 mm) treatment combinations. Runoff from the across-slope/standard treatment combination was significantly ( P <0.05) less than from the up-and-downslope/minimal tillage treatment. The across-slope/minimal tillage treatment combination had a significantly smaller ( P <0.05) event soil loss (67 kg ha−1) than the up-and-downslope/standard tillage (278 kg ha−1) and up-and-downslope/minimal tillage (245 kg ha−1) combinations. Crop yields were significantly ( P <0.05) higher on across-slope plots in 1988, 1996 and 1997 than on up-and-downslope plots, and were also higher (but not significantly) on the across-slope plots in 7 of the 8 remaining years. Minimal cultivation decreased yield compared with standard cultivation in one year only. We recommend that across-slope cultivation combined with minimal tillage be investigated at field scale to assess its suitability for incorporation into UK farming systems.  相似文献

Static uniaxial compression tests were performed on 26 agricultural soils from Quebec. Compression lines (bulk density vs. applied load) were obtained at different water contents for each soil previously sieved to 6 mm. For soils with clay contents less than 35%, the compression index (slope of the compression line) was best correlated with the mineral fraction of the soil (r = 0.75** with clay and r =−0.78** with sand). For clay-rich soils, the compression index was best correlated with organic carbon content (r = −0.75**). The bulk density under standard compression conditions (100 kPa load and 50% water saturation) was related to both clay (r = −0.80**) and organic carbon (r = −0.77**). This parameter was also highly correlated with the soil lower plastic limit (r = −0.95**) which corroborates the observation that the consistency limits can be good predictors of other mechanical properties which are more difficult to determine. Results suggested that both the mineral and the organic fractions have much influence on the compressive behaviour of Quebec agricultural soils.  相似文献

Abstract. During three consecutive years (1993–1995) a split-plot design with three replications was used to study the biological and physical role of mulch in the improvement of crusted soil water balance and its productivity in the north of Burkina Faso. The main treatment was the use of an insecticide, to obtain plots with and without soil fauna (SF and NSF). The subsidiary treatment consisted of four mulch types randomly applied on subplots. These were straw of Pennisetum pedicellatum applied at 3 t ha−1, woody material of Pterocarpus lucens applied at 6 t ha−1 and composite (woody material and straw) treatments applied at 4 t ha−1. In addition there was a control, with no mulch (bare plot). Data on soil faunal activity, runoff, sediment accumulation from wind blown soil, vegetation cover and vegetation dry matter yield were collected on all plots.
The biological activity (mainly termites) in mulched plots was the key element in the efficacy of mulching to rehabilitate crusted soil. Water infiltration and dry matter yield were statistically lower on NSF plots than on SF plots and runoff and dry matter yield were not different from the values obtained on bare plots. A significant correlation was found between runoff, all vegetation data and termite-voids. Sediment accumulation due to the physical barrier of the mulch was not found to be a significant factor in the improvement of vegetation performance and the reduction of runoff.  相似文献

The effects on soil aeration of varying both the intensity and quantity of water applied per irrigation were investigated in a field experiment on a clay soil. Soil physical and soil aeration parameters were measured before, and for up to 7 days after irrigation. Irrigation increased the volumetric water content of the surface layer by approximately 8% v/v. However, periods of waterlogging were short on this soil. Significant decreases in soil oxygen content in the days after irrigation were caused by increased soil and root respiration. In terms of subsequent crop growth, the practice of applying 30 mm irrigation water at an intensity of 5 mm h−1 was shown to be superior to irrigations providing half this quantity (15 mm) or double this intensity (10 mm h −1). The lower intensity irrigations decreased soil permeability by homogeneous wetting and swelling, and thus more of the water applied was recovered in the soil. Approximately one third of the water applied at the higher intensity was lost through cracks, and wetting of the soil was less uniform.  相似文献

Abstract. Agricultural soils are important sources of the tropospheric ozone precursor NO and the greenhouse gas N2O. Emissions are controlled primarily by parameters that vary the soil mineral N supply, temperature and soil aeration. In this field experiment, the importance of soil physical properties on emissions of NO and N2O are identified. Fluxes were measured from 13 soils which belonged to 11 different soil series, ranging from poorly drained silty clay loams to freely drained sandy loams. All soils were under the same soil management regime and crop type (winter barley) and in the same maritime climate zone. Despite this, emissions of NO and N2O ranged over two orders of magnitude on all three measurement occasions, in spring before and after fertilizer application, and in autumn after harvest. NO emissions ranged from 0.3 to 215 μg NO-N m–2 h–1, with maximum emissions always from the most sandy, freely drained soil. Nitrous oxide emissions ranged from 0 to 193 μg N2O-N m–2 h–1. Seasonal shifts in soil aeration caused maximum N2O emissions to switch from freely drained sandy soils in spring to imperfectly drained soils with high clay contents in autumn. Although effects of soil type on emissions were not consistent, N2O emission was best related to a combination of bulk density and clay content and the NO/N2O ratio decreased logarithmically with increasing water filled pore space.  相似文献

Abstract. The influence of trampling on the soils of the St James Walkway was studied during 1985 by comparing 'on'- and off-track sites. Trampling increased the average soil bulk density by 0.3 g/cm3 at 0–5 cm depth and by 0.1 g/cm3 at 10–15 cm depth. Trampling increased the average soil shear strength by 11 kPa at 0–5 cm depth and by 6 kPa at 5–10 cm depth. All mineral soils were compacted to some extent by trampling. The podzolized high country yellow-brown earths (Dystrochrepts) were the most affected because their organic topsoil was truncated. Their exposed subsoil was however more resistant to further damage than their topsoil. Organic soils (Medihemists) were not compacted but their very low shear strength and high moisture content make them unsuitable for tracks. Untrampled soil bulk density and soil stone content were negatively correlated with the change in bulk density by trampling, and could be used to predict the risk of soil compaction by trampling.  相似文献

Abstract. The Agricultural Catchments Research Unit model (ACRU) includes a decision support system (DSS) for estimating the water content of soil at field capacity (θ fc ) and wilting point (θ wp ) when these characteristics are not directly measurable. Three methods of estimation are proposed: (a) based on silt and clay content and bulk density, (b) based on clay content only, and (c) based on soil series. These three pedotransfer functions are compared with respect to both the estimation of θ fc and θ wp and the propagation of errors when the actual evapotranspiration of a wheat crop (E) is predicted over the growing season by the ACRU model.
The standard error of estimation was between 0.066 and 0.082 m3/m3 for θ fc , between 0.056 and 0.069 m3/m3 for θ wp and between 29.9 and 34.8 mm of water for E. The method based on silt and clay contents and bulk density predicted θ fc and θ wp for non-swelling soils most precisely. The method based on soil series was better than other methods for swelling soils. It also performed better for estimating available water capacity and consequently for predicting E from a conceptual soil water model. The propagated error of estimating θ fc and θ wp using the DSS reached 15–18% of the simulated E. The error in the prediction of E can reach 26–30% when spatial variation in soil properties is also estimated.  相似文献

In acid soils in the Eastern Plains of Colombia, forage grasses planted on land prepared before the previous dry season produced 40–50% more dry matter than when land was prepared immediately before planting. Virtually no NO3 accumulated in surface (0–10 cm) soil from three native undisturbed savanna sites. Where land was ploughed before the dry season, NO3 levels increased gradually after a 2–3 month lag, and dropped at the beginning of the rains. In samples incubated for 4 weeks, more NO3 accumulated in the wet than the dry season. A similar 2–3-month lag occurred when land was ploughed after the dry season. NH4+ levels were higher in ploughed than savanna soils, and rose in all soils at the beginning of the rains. More NO3 and NH4+ accumulated on incubation in pots than in soil cores. Forage grasses inhibited NO3 accumulation in the soil, relative to plant-free plots, and legumes stimulated it. N fertilization overcame this inhibition except in the case of Brachiaria humidicola .  相似文献

Effects of organic matter and calcium on soil structural stability   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The cationic bridging effect of the calcium ion (Ca2+) and the flocculating ability of clay and organic matter are crucial in the formation and stability of soil aggregates. They are therefore likely to influence the soil's saturated hydraulic conductivity ( K s). We tested the individual effects of these factors on aggregate stability and related hydraulic properties, and studied the influence of clay mineralogy also. Samples from the surface (0–10 cm) of three contrasting soils in Trinidad were used. The soils were treated with three levels of Ca2+ and three levels of organic matter in a 3 × 3 × 3 factorial design and incubated for 14 days. Both aggregate stability and saturated hydraulic conductivity were influenced by all factor combinations. Interactions between soil type and Ca2+ revealed the importance of polyvalent cations in aggregate stability of soils with low activity minerals. The influence of organic matter varied with quantity; the more there was, the more stable the soil became, particularly in the soil containing little clay. Clay dispersion and slaking of expanding minerals occurred even with large additions of Ca2+ and organic matter, emphasizing the overall influence of mineralogy in determining the response of soils to stability treatments.  相似文献

The effects of burning on the levels of soil organic matter, soil nitrogen, and soil microbial biomass were studied by carrying out experimental shifting cultivation at two sites, Niah and Bakam in Sarawak, Malaysia. Vegetation biomass was burned in plots (10 × 10 m2) at the rates of 0 (control), 100, 200, and 300 Mg ha−1 at the Niah site and 0, 20, and 100 Mg ha−1 at the Bakam site. At the Niah site, the levels of total C and N of the soils did not change throughout the experiment in spite of enhanced soil respiration until 2 months after burning. Although burning induced an increase in the amount of NH4-N of the soils, the readily available pool of N (the sum of the NH4-N, NO3-N, microbial biomass N, and extractable organic N pools) in the burned plots was depleted appreciably at the end of rice cultivation. The effects of burning on these properties tended to be substantial with increasing amounts of the vegetation biomass burned. On the other hand, the levels of total C and N and the readily available N pool at the Bakam site were low before burning compared with those at the Niah site, and the burning treatments did not affect them appreciably. While the rice yield at the Niah site reached the average value obtained in traditional shifting cultivation in Sarawak, that at the Bakam site was much lower. It was suggested that the flush of NH4-N induced by burning was one of the major factors for rice growth.  相似文献

The magnitude of radiocaesium fixation by micaceous clay minerals is affected by their transformation, which depends on weathering in soil. The net retention of radiocaesium traces was quantified by sorption–desorption experiments in the various horizons of four sandy soils forming an acid brown earth–podzol weathering sequence derived from sandy sediments and characterized by marked changes in mineral composition. The features of the 2:1 minerals of the four soils, resulting from an aluminization process in depth and a desaluminization process towards the surface, had a strong influence on Cs+ fixation. Beneath the desaluminization front, which deepens from the acid brown earth to the podzol, hydroxy interlayered vermiculite was dominant and the 137Cs+ fixation was the weakest. At the desaluminization front depth, vermiculite was responsible for the strongest 137Cs+ fixation. In the upper layers, smectite appeared in the podzolized soils and the 137Cs+ fixation decreased. The magnitude in Cs+ fixation therefore appeared as a tracer of the transformation process affecting the 2:1 clay minerals in the acid brown earth–podzol weathering sequence. This magnitude was positively correlated with the vermiculite content of the studied soil materials estimated by the rubidium saturation method.  相似文献

Abstract. The behaviour of potassium (K) in a range of arable soils was examined by plotting the change in exchangeable K of the topsoil (Δ Kex) at the end of a 3–5 year period against the K balance over the same period (fertilizer K applied minus offtake in crops, estimated from farmers' records of yield and straw removal). Based on the assumption that values for offtake per tonne of crop yield used for UK arable crops MAFF 2000) are valid averages, 10–50% of Δ Kex was explained by the balance, relationships being stronger on shallow/stony soils. Excess fertilizer tended to increase Kex and reduced fertilization decreased it, requiring between 1.2 and 5.4 kg K ha−1 for each mg L−1Δ Kex. However, merely to prevent Kex falling required an extra 20 kg K ha−1 yr−1 fertilizer on Chalk soils and soils formed in the overlying Tertiary and Quaternary deposits, despite clay contents >18%. Whereas, on older geological materials, medium soils needed no extra K and clays gained 17 kg K ha−1 yr−1. It is unlikely that the apparent losses on some soil types are anomalies due to greater crop K contents. Theory and the literature suggest leaching from the topsoil as a major factor; accumulation in the subsoil was not measured. Recommendations for K fertilization of UK soils might be improved by including loss or gain corrections for certain soil types.  相似文献

Primary particle size distribution (PSD) of eroded sediment can be used to estimate potential nutrient losses from soil and pollution hazards to the environment. We studied eroded sediment PSDs from three saturated soils, packed in trays (20 × 40 × 4 cm), that had undergone either minimal aggregate slaking (MAS) or severe aggregate slaking (SAS) prior to a 60 mm simulated rainstorm (kinetic energy, 15.9 kJ m−3; droplet diameter, 2.97 mm) and collected runoff at regular intervals. The degree of aggregate slaking was controlled by the rate at which soils were wetted to saturation. The PSDs of eroded materials and of parent soils were determined using a laser particle size analyser. For each soil, PSD frequency curves of eroded sediments and parent soils were generally of a similar shape but most eroded sediments had larger clay contents than their parent soils. In the SAS treatment, cumulative clay enrichment in the eroded materials was inversely related to the parent soil clay content, these being 28.5, 26.6 and 22.8% richer in clay than their parent soils for the loam, sandy clay and clay, respectively. Generally, total clay loss was greater from soils with SAS than from those with MAS because of erosion rates; however, clay enrichment of sediments, compared with parent soil clay contents, was mostly greater in samples with MAS. Greater clay enrichment took place during the early seal development stage in the loam, but could not readily be associated with specific stages of seal development for the clay. In the sandy clay, the relation between seal development and clay enrichment in the eroded material depended on the initial degree of aggregate slaking. The observed large preferential loss of clay by erosion in cultivated soils re-emphasizes the need to employ erosion control measures.  相似文献

Wheel traffic and tillage effects on runoff and crop yield   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Traffic and tillage effects on runoff, soil water and crop production under rainfall were investigated over a period of 6 years on a heavy clay vertosols (vertisols) in Queensland, Australia. A split plot design was used to isolate traffic effects, while the cropping program and treatments were broadly representative of extensive grain production practice in the northern grain region of Australia. Treatments subject to zero tillage and stubble mulch tillage each comprised pairs of 90 m2 plots, from which runoff was recorded. A 3 m wide controlled traffic system allowed one of each pair to be maintained as a non-wheeled plot, while the complete surface area of the other received a single annual wheeling treatment from a working 100 kW tractor.

Mean annual runoff from controlled traffic plots was 81 mm (36.3%) smaller than that from wheeled plots, while runoff from zero tillage was reduced by 31 mm (15.7%). Traffic and tillage effects appeared to be cumulative, so the mean annual runoff from controlled traffic and zero tillage plots, representing best practice, was 112 mm (47.2%) less than that from wheeled stubble mulch plots, representing conventional cropping practice. Rainfall infiltration into controlled traffic zero tillage soil was thus 12.0% greater than into wheeled stubble mulched soil. Rainfall/runoff hydrographs show that wheeling produced a large and consistent increase in runoff, whereas tillage produced a smaller increase. Treatment effects were greater on dry soil, but were still present in large and intense rainfall events on wet soil.

Plant available water capacity (PAWC) in the 0–500 mm zone increased by 10 mm (11.5%) and mean grain yields increased by 337 kg/ha (9.4%) in controlled traffic plots, compared with wheeled plots. Mean grain yield of zero tillage was 2–8% greater than that of stubble mulch plots for all crops except for winter wheat in 1994 and 1998. Increased infiltration and plant available water were probably responsible for increased mean grain yields of 497 kg/ha (14.5%) in controlled traffic zero tillage, compared with wheeled stubble mulch treatments. Dissipation of tractive and tillage energy in the soil is the apparent mechanism of deleterious effects on the soils ability to support productive cropping in this environment. Controlled traffic and conservation tillage farming systems appear to be a practicable solution.  相似文献

The status of cobalt (Co) in savanna soils of Nigeria is largely unknown, and a long-term experiment including inorganic fertilizer (NPK) and farmyard manure (FYM) and uncultivated land provided information on the way management affected the dynamics of Co in the soil. Total Co increased with increasing depth, whereas readily extractable Co decreased. The mean concentration of Co (5.6–7.9 mg kg−1) was close to the mean value of 8 mg kg−1 reported for soils worldwide, whereas the concentration of extractable Co was less than that reported in most soils. Regression analysis indicated that total Fe predicted up to 78% of the soil Co. The potentially available Co correlated strongly with pedogenic or reducible Mn oxides extracted with dithionite–citrate–bicarbonate. Mass balance calculations showed that fertilization with either NPK or FYM caused losses of between 0.8 and 1.1 g Co m−2 after 50 years of cultivation against the uncultivated site as a reference. However, Co increased by 1.8 g m−2 in the soil receiving FYM + NPK, suggesting that the Co of the soil was best maintained under this management probably because of incidental additions of Co in the manures. Furthermore, the positive Co balance in the FYM + NPK plot was partly enhanced by its larger contents of clay, Fe and pedogenic Mn oxides than in either the FYM or NPK plots. Clay, Fe and pedogenic oxides served as Co sinks in this particular savanna soil.  相似文献
