This paper reviews state-of-the-art techniques for culture of larval common carp, Cyprinus carpio, silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, bighead carp, H. nobilis, and grass carp, Crenopharyngodon idella. Water temperature, food, and predation are important factors influencing larval survival and growth. Lower and upper lethal temperatures range from 3 to 44°C. Optimum growth temperatures range from 38 to 40°C. Lethal and optimum temperatures vary with acclimation temperature, fish age, and development stage of fish. Water temperatures are close to optimum for larval culture in tropical regions but are often too low in temperate climates. Intensive culture in temperature-controlled systems is important in temperate climates. The first food eaten by larvae in ponds consists mainly of protozoa, rotifers, and copepod nauplii. As fhe larvae grow, they quickly shift to larger food items, including cladocera and insect larvae. Management practices to enhance natural food development in earthen ponds include bottom drying, soil preparation, liming, fertilization, and agricultural crop cultivation. The development of food organisms in freshly filled ponds follows a pattern of succession. For best results, a pond should be stocked at the stage of succession when the size relationship between fish larvae (predators) and zooplankton (prey) is proper. A common practice is to stock larvae 3-7 days after filling. If ponds are filled too long before larvae are stocked, food relationships between fish and invertebrates can be reversed. Predator control includes biological, chemical, physical, and mechanical methods. Although great progress has been made in the development of dry starter diets, prepared feeds are not yet available for successful large-scale production. This problem is usually overcome by starting larvae with live food or with a mixture of live food and dry feed and by shifting larvae to dry diets as they grow. Live food either is collected from zooplankton ponds or is produced in intensive culture conditions. Systems for larval culture can range from ponds to intensive culture with water recirculation systems. Choice of the best system depends on the local climate, technical, and socio-economic conditions.  相似文献

Eggs of spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor Olafsen)were incubated at constant 4, 6 and 8 °C, and disinfected withglutaric dialdehyde (150 p.p.m. for 5 min) once ortwice a month during two thirds of the incubation period, to prevent growth ofmicroorganisms. Hatching of apparently normal larvae started earlier when eggswere disinfected twice a month compared to once a month at all incubationtemperature regimes. The time to 50% hatch was 900 and 920 day-degrees (16 and16,5 weeks) at 8 °C, 835 and 880 day-degrees (20 and 21 weeks)at 6 °C and 725 and 800 day-degrees (26 and 28,5 weeks) at 4°C, in the egg groups disinfected twice or once a month, respectively. The best survival until hatching was noted when eggs weredisinfected twice a month and incubated at 6 and 8 °C.Survivalwas very low at 4 °C. Prematurely hatched larvae wereregistered in all egg groups disinfected twice a month and the highestfrequencywas noted in the 8 °C groups. The larval weight at normalhatching in the 6 and 8 °C groups was negatively correlatedwith incubation temperature and intervals of disinfection during the incubationperiod, but after 42 days feeding with live feed (unenrichedArtemia) the weights of the larvae were not significantlydifferent. The specific growth rates of the larvae from the eggs incubated at 6°C and 8 °C were 3.0% and 3.2%, respectively. The mean survival of larvae was between 88% and 96% at 42 days post-hatching.Young wolffish originating from the 6 °C incubation groupsshowed lowest mortality.  相似文献

Climate change is a growing concern for pond culture of catfish, due to possible exacerbation of temperature fluctuations and increased maximum daily temperatures. Because channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) have a broad natural distribution from Canada to Mexico, it was hypothesized that natural differences in thermal tolerance and seasonal growth may be attributed to different geographical strains. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that these differences would be observed in hybrid catfish (I. punctatus x [blue catfish] I. furcatus). Chronic thermal tolerance and growth rate were quantified in two geographically distinct strains of channel catfish and a corresponding hybrid catfish from one of these strains with a cross to an industry standard blue catfish strain. In a 6‐week growth experiment, catfish were subjected to daily cycling temperatures of either 27–31°C or 32–36°C, mimicking pond fluctuations. Hybrid catfish had the highest survival at both temperatures, and both strains of channel catfish had greater growth in weight or length at 27–31°C than at 32–36°C. Therefore, these results indicate that physiological performance, in terms of growth, decreases in channel catfish at temperatures greater than 27–31°C regardless of geographical origin of strain, whereas hybrid catfish did not show a decrease in weight under the same temperature conditions.  相似文献

Fresh liver slices were shock-frozen in liquid nitrogen at −196°C, then powdered in a kitchen-mixer at the boiling temperature of the liquid nitrogen. The powdered liver was given to the larvae of a cyprinid hybrid fish (bighead carp × silver carp) in open-flow containers at 26–27°C. During the 3 weeks of feeding, growth and survival of the larvae were comparable with those of sibs fed living zooplankton.  相似文献

Recently, we examined the specific resistance of two carp lines (W and R8) and their hybrid, to experimental bath challenges with atypical Aeromonas salmonicida. These experiments indicated a genetic difference in resistance, the W carp being most susceptible. In the present study, fish of the same spawnings were grown in pond culture, to examine the correlation between disease resistance observed in the laboratory and survival rate in the field, as well as to examine the production potential of the hybrid. Hybrid advantage resulted in higher average weights at the field samplings. Correlation of the field survival rates with specific resistance to A. salmonicida was pronounced. Survival of the W carp after winter was much lower (47%) than survival of the R8 (93%) and hybrid carp (93%).  相似文献

Abstract. Tench, Tinca tinca L., larvae were reared under controlled conditions at water temperatures of 28°C and 31°C during a 15-day period. Feeding with exclusively live Artemia nauplii gave best results, irrespective of rearing temperature (total length 13·6mm; average weight 31 mg; survival rate 83–85%). High survival rates of 81–88% were found also in all groups fed mixed diets, whereas growth rate of tench larvae was significantly influenced by the frequency of supplemental feeding with Artemia. When applied alone, the tested carp starter feed turned out to be insufficient for rearing the larval tench.  相似文献

Low survival of vendace (Coregonus albula) eggs incubating on natural spawning grounds (due to silting, oxygen deficits and action of predators) is discussed as one of the reasons for the great fluctuation in numbers of commercial fish. Incubation of eggs in hatcheries where the survival rate averages 60% could compensate for the great numerical disparity between the eggs spawned naturally and those taken for hatcheries. In the absence of the effects of mass stocking of lakes with vendace larvae, one can conclude that apparent mortality during the larval stage also determines the strength of the successive year-class.Vendace larvae are usually stocked immediately after the ice cover recedes from lakes. At this time they often face a period of cold weather when water temperature is low and food organisms are scarce. Poor environmental conditions cause slow growth of larvae. This increases the period of highest vulnerability of the larvae to predation. It is possible to accelerate the growth of larvae by synchronizing the time of stocking with the development of favourable thermal conditions and food availability in lakes. In Polish climatic conditions the first 10 days of May seem to be a suitable time for stocking lakes.A technique for delaying vendace egg hatching by cooling the hatchery water has been developed. It enables hatching of vendace to be delayed from the beginning of April until the beginning of May, thereby inducing mass hatching of larvae when lake conditions are optimal for stocking.  相似文献

The effects of different combinations of temperature and salinity on development and survival of Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus (L.), larvae were studied in two experiments. In the period from 57 to 120 d° post hatching, approximately 38% of the larvae died: in both experiments, mortality was significantly related to temperature, but there was no relationship to salinity.Cumulative, chronic mortality during the yolk-sac stage (until 210 d°) was related to salinity. High mortality was observed in both experiments when high salinity (>34%) was combined with incubation at either high (9 °C) or low (3 °C) temperature. The development of head lesions was significantly related to temperature, and for larvae kept at high salinity, increased mortality may have been a result of salinity stress in the injured larvae.Abnormal development of the caudal notochord, sometimes resulting in a 90-degree bend of the tail, occurred during incubation of early yolk-sac larvae in high-salinity water. The occurrence of larvae with locked jaws, and larvae with oedema in the yolk-sac sinus and pericardium, was significantly related to temperature. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998  相似文献

Aeration cost is the third largest cost in intensive aquaculture system after post larvae and feed cost representing about 15% of total production cost. Therefore, selection of aerators plays a major role in maximizing the profit in such system. Over the years, various types of aerators have been developed specifically to enhance the production of aquatic species. The performances of these aerators are generally compared in terms of standard aeration efficiency. However, suitability of a particular aerator at different pond sizes and water quality conditions can best be determined in terms of aeration cost per unit time of operation. In the present study, economic performance of five different aeration systems – circular stepped cascade (CSC), pooled circular stepped cascade (PCSC), 1-hp paddle wheel, 2-hp paddle wheel and propeller aspirator pump were evaluated and compared at different pond sizes, initial DO concentrations of pond and operating hours of aerators; assuming a typical Indian major carp (IMC) culture with commonly practiced stocking density and feeding. Both CSC and PCSC aerators were found to be suitable for pond size less than 1000 m3. However, for pond sizes more than 5000 m3, 1-hp paddle wheel and 2-hp paddle wheel aerators were found to be efficient.  相似文献

Three case studies of ammonia autointoxication of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) are described. In the first case, carp yearlings with a full digestive tract were transferred during the growing period from pond water (22°C) to tap water (17°C). In the second case, marketable carp were transferred from the fishing ground of a pond (18°C) to a storage pond (10–12°C). Harvest was performed in late September when the fish were still ingesting natural feed. In the third case, marketable carp after storage for 1 month were transferred to storage ponds with markedly lower water temperature. Stress because of harvest and handling also occurred in this case. In all cases, highly increased concentrations of ammonia were found in the blood plasma of the fish (mean ± SD 1760 ± 350 μmol L−1 in the first case, 870 ± 540 μmol L−1 in the second case, and 880 ± 150 μmol L−1 in the third case). Highly congested, dark-red coloured, oedematous gills were observed for all specimens. We can avoid similar cases of ammonia autointoxication by protection of fish from sudden changes of temperature during rearing, harvesting, and handling.  相似文献

A 21 day feeding trial was carried out at 24 °C aiming to evaluate the effect of diets containing high levels of protein hydrolysates on growth, survival and body composition of common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., larvae since first feeding. Eight semipurified diets based on a fish protein hydrolysate (CPSP) with or without additional nitrogen sources, such as casein, casein hydrolysates or other hydrolysates from several origins, were tested, using a diet based on yeast as a reference. High survival rates of larvae were observed at the end of the trial for all experimental diets, ranging from 97% for the yeast diet to 71% when CPSP was used as the only nitrogen source. In terms of growth, the best results were achieved with the CPSP-casein diet (1:1) and the yeast-based diet (17.5 mm total length / 82.8 mg wet weight and 16.3 mm total length / 55.4 mg wet weight, respectively). Growth of larvae fed on diets with protein hydrolysates as the only nitrogen source was considerably lower than that of larvae fed a mixture of intact protein and protein hydrolysates.  相似文献

Tetraploid fish, which are considered as key resources of diploid gametes for further breeding and ploidy manipulation, can be artificially induced by inhibition of the mitotic cell division with hydrostatic pressure or temperature treatments. Although many attempts have been made to induce artificial tetraploid strains, successful establishment of viable and fertile tetraploid strains are rare. In pond loach, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, natural tetraploid individuals are distributed in wild populations and diploid gametes from the tetraploid fish have been used for the induction of polyploid individuals, but artificially induced tetraploid strains have not been established yet. In the present study, we optimised starting timing of the heat-shock treatment (41 °C for 2 min) to inhibit a mitotic cell division in fertilised eggs of the normal diploid pond loach between 21 and 51 min after insemination at 20 °C. After the treatment, we observed external appearance of hatching larvae and flow cytometrically determined ploidy status of the resultant larvae. Although tetraploid and diploid/tetraploid mosaic larvae were obtained, the optimum timings for induction of tetraploidy varied amongst crosses. Various kinds of ploidy such as haploidy, diploidy, triploidy, pentaploidy, hexaploidy, aneuploidy and mosaic were detected in non-optimum heat-shock timings for tetraploidisation. Survivors, a tetraploid and a diploid/tetraploid mosaic male, matured at the age of 1-year-old, but they produced functional haploid spermatozoa.  相似文献

Storage of common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., eggs for short durations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this study, a short-term storage of pre-activated eggs of the Japanese ornamental (koi) carp, Cyprinus carpio L., at three different temperature regimes is reported. Koi eggs were stored at low temperatures (6-9oC), at variable or high temperatures (12-31C) and at moderate-stable temperatures (20-24.5oC). Survival of the developing embryos was examined at the first and the second day post-activation, and in hatch-out larvae. Survival was calculated for each treatment by linear regression Y = a-bX (P± 0.01), except for eggs incubated at temperature of about 20 C(P > 0.1).The specific mortality index (b/a 100), as a ratio between the mortality rate (b) and the fertilization rate (a), indicated that the highest mortality is associated with the high and unstable storage temperatures, while the lowest mortality is with the moderate and stable storage temperatures. Eggs can be stored at moderate and stable temperatures for a maximal duration of 6h, yielding survival of hatch-out larvae higher than 50%. In two trials, fertilization potency of sperm stored in a domestic refrigerator (5-9oC) for 5h, was compared with freshly stripped sperm and no differences in fertilization rates were found between the two treatments.  相似文献

  1. The contribution of nearly three decades of research, much of it published in Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems (AQC), to the conservation of the crucian carp Carassius carassius in the East of England, including work coordinated by the Norfolk Crucian Project, is summarized.
  2. Although recent genetic studies indicate that this species was probably introduced to England about the same time as common carp Cyprinus carpio, the crucian carp is considered a cultural heritage species worthy of conservation in eastern England.
  3. This research covers the environmental biology of the species in the East of England, documentation of the species' decline in the county of Norfolk, and the pond management practices implemented in Norfolk to rehabilitate existing and fully terrestrialized pond habitat specifically for crucian carp conservation.
  4. The AQC papers that contributed to this line of research showed that England offers a particularly favourable environment for crucian carp growth and reproduction. These AQC articles provided the evidence base to complement crucian carp conservation initiatives in the London area (mainly the counties of Essex and Hertfordshire), as well as forming the basis for the designation of crucian carp as a Biodiversity Action Priority species in the county of Norfolk.
  5. The broader impact of the work in the East of England was to inspire the recently‐formed English National Crucian Conservation Project, which aims to promote the conservation of crucian carp and its habitat, and to encourage the development of well‐managed crucian fisheries.
  6. These evidence‐based conservation initiatives, perhaps the first throughout Europe, have witnessed a reversal of the species' fortunes in England, which is effectively an ideal geographical region in which to promote the conservation of this species within a wider, European context.

A sustainable semi-intensive pond aquaculture technology including major carp species as cash-crop and small indigenous fish species (SIS) as food for the farmers' families is being optimized in Bangladesh. The inclusion of silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), a cheap large species affordable by poor farmers, is now being considered. As part of a study on the effects of this filter feeder on polycultures including the large carps rohu (Labeo rohita), catla (Catla catla) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and the SIS punti (Puntius sophore) and mola (Amblypharyngodon mola), an experiment was carried out to test the effects of silver carp and of each SIS species on the growth, survival and yield of the large and small fish and on pond ecology. The ecology of the ponds was dominated by changes in time, strongly related to the development of a surface plankton scum at the beginning of the culture season and weather conditions. The surface scum increased decomposition processes and decreased algal development in the water body, promoted photosynthesis and ammonium release and reduced nitrification. Over those effects, the presence of silver carp in the ponds decreased algal biomass through grazing and promoted nitrification providing and resuspending particles in the water column. These effects were also produced by mola, but were evident only in the absence of silver carp. Punti stirring on the pond bottom increased nutrient flow from the sediments into the water column and promoted nitrification, but were also evident only in the absence of silver carp. The addition of 10 silver carp over the 99 large carps stocked in the 100 m2 fishponds did not affect punti and mola reproduction in the ponds, negatively affected rohu and catla growth and yield by about 20-25% but not their survival, did not affect common carp performance, reduced punti harvested biomass by 10%, reduced mola performance by about 50%, and silver carp's own biomass increased total yield and total income in about 20% each. The addition of 250 mola or punti to the large carp polycultures did not affect the performance of any of the large carps. The decreased income from selling the more expensive large carps was more than compensated by that obtained from silver carp, which increased total income by 13-24% as compared to the corresponding treatments without silver carp. This allows the option to the farmer of selling part of the silver carp to complete the cash income that would have been obtained from large carps only if silver carp would not be stocked, and consume the rest with the family.  相似文献

The activity of the enzyme Na+,K+-ATPase and morphological changes of gill chloride cells in grouper, Epinephelus coioides larvae and juveniles were determined 6–48 h after abrupt transfer from ambient rearing conditions (30–32 ppt, 26.5–30 °C) to different salinity (8, 18, 32, 40 ppt) and temperature (25, 30 °C) combinations. Na+,K+-ATPase activity in day 20 larvae did not change at salinities 8–32 ppt. Activity decreased significantly (P <0.01) after exposure to 40 ppt at 25–30 °C, which was accompanied by an increase (P <0.05) in density and fractional area of chloride cells. Enzyme activity in 40 ppt did not reach a stable level and larvae failed to recover from an osmotic imbalance that produced a low survival at 25 °C and death of all larvae at 30 °C. Enzyme activity and chloride cell morphology in day 40 groupers did not change in 8–40 ppt at 25 °C and 8–32 ppt at 30 °C. A significant decrease and a subsequent increase in Na+,K+-ATPase activity in 40 ppt at 30 °C was associated with the increase in chloride cell density resulting in an increased fractional area but a decreased cell size. Enzyme activity and chloride cells of day 60 grouper were unaffected by abrupt transfer to test salinities and temperatures. These results demonstrate that grouper larvae and juveniles are efficient osmoregulators over a wide range of salinities. Salinity adaptation showed an ontogenetic shift as the larvae grew and reached the juvenile stage. This development of tolerance limits may reflect their response to actual conditions existing in the natural environment.  相似文献

This study compared the performance of larvae of giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) from Thailand and Vietnam. Thai broods were collected from a farm and Vietnamese broods were collected from a river. Larvae from these two sources were raised in identical environments, and their rates of development and survival as well as their ability to withstand environmental stresses were assessed. The first postlarval stage was observed in both strains on day 22. All larvae (100%) from Thai broods completed metamorphosis by day 36, but only 89% of the Vietnam strain completed metamorphosis by day 45. The stages of development were more uniform in larvae from the Thai stock than the Vietnamese stock. Survival differences were observed within the first week (92% in the Thai group vs. 55% in the Vietnamese group). These differences were most pronounced beginning in week 5 (52% and 16% respectively) and week 7 (33% and 2% respectively). No clear difference was found in brood size and fecundity between the two groups. No difference in survival was observed between the two groups of larvae challenged with salinity, oxygen or formalin. Differential development rates of larvae in the same batch would naturally create conditions favourable for cannibalism and impaired ability to capture food. The earlier and more uniform rate of development, and subsequent higher rate of survival of Thai stock compared with the Vietnamese wild stock is suggested to be due to inadvertent selection in the domesticated stock.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted into the rearing of crucian carp larvae under controlled conditions in an experimental closed water system. In both cases, the rearing lasted 21 days. The first experiment concerned the initial stocking density (from 50 to 600 individuals per l), whilst the second one studied the first food offered (two types of Artemia nauplii, decapsulated Artemia cysts and three types of commercial feeds) which were applied at the moment of exogenous feeding commencement. The best results were obtained using 50 larvae per l, whilst there were no significant differences within the range 200–600 larvae per l. The application of dry feed had a negative influence on the survival and other parameters. The highest survival rate was found in the groups fed with freshly hatched Artemia naupli. The results obtained indicate that the rearing of crucian carp larvae may be successfully conducted in very high stocking densities. However, the very high sensitivity of crucian carp larvae to the type of food offered during the initial days of life should be taken into account. The data presented in this article could be very useful in crucian carp larviculture.  相似文献
