Gouge dehorning was evaluated as a mode of transmitting bovine leukemia virus in Holstein calves at a commercial dairy. Significantly (p less than 0.05) more calves dehorned by the gouge method developed antibodies to bovine leukemia virus, as measured by agar-gel immunodiffusion, three months after dehorning, than calves not dehorned. The field use of a blood-contaminated dehorning device resulted in transmission of bovine leukemia virus.  相似文献

A study was made of the effects of rotavirus and/or enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) on dairy calves born and suckled on the farm and subsequently reared in isolation. Calves were orally inoculated at 6 days old with either rotavirus (5), ETEC (7), rotavirus and ETEC (5) or remained uninoculated controls (4), and their reactions were recorded by clinical, microbiological, and pathological observations. Rotavirus infection consistently produced diarrhoea, while ETEC inoculated alone did not colonise the intestine. In dual infections, both rotavirus and ETEC multiplied, although the severity of diarrhoea was not greater than that caused by rotavirus alone. Some ETEC-inoculated calves developed subsequent naturally-acquired rotavirus infections, but in these no ETEC multiplication occurred. The results suggest that prior or simultaneous rotavirus infection is necessary to enable ETEC colonisation of the intestine in convenstional calves of this age.  相似文献

Calves were immunized with 10 000 infective larvae each of Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia ostertagi, and Trichostrongylus axei and challenged with 100 000 of each species. When compared with nonimmunized controls, the immunized calves had 95% fewer H. contortus, 10% fewer O. ostertagi, and 20% fewer T. axei; the latter two reductions were not significant. In four other experiments single or multiple immunizing inoculations of T. axei followed by challenge at various intervals after immunization failed to result in significant resistance measured by the number of worms of the challenge inoculation that became established, by post-challenge fecal egg count, and by gross pathologic alterations of abomasa at necropsy.  相似文献

Four groups of eight newborn calves were used to study the intestinal transmission of colostral immunoglobulin from the intestinal lumen to the blood circulation. The first feed was given one, eight, 16 or 24 hours after birth. Thereafter, three feeds were given with eight hour intervals. All feeds were from the same pool of colostrum and the amount fed each time corresponded to 3 per cent of the calves birthweight. To estimate the transmission of macromolecules in each feed four different macromolecules were used as markers. For the first feed, the marker was bovine IgG, in the second FITC-dextran, in the third ovalbumin and in the fourth human serum albumin. Blood samples were taken eight hours after each feed and at one week old. There were no differences in transmission for the first feed although the calves varied in age between one and 24 hours, but in the second, third and fourth feeds the calves that received a first feed at one hour old, transmitted significantly more of the marker molecules than did the other three groups. The substantial transmission of macromolecules at the first feed in all four groups indicates that a base level of transmission capacity is maintained during the first 24 hours or longer and that, under certain conditions, acceptable passive immunisation is possible in calves given their first colostrum as late as 24 hours after birth.  相似文献

Comparison of three methods of feeding colostrum to dairy calves   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Absorption of colostral immunoglobulins by Holstein calves was studied in 3 herds in which 3 methods of colostrum feeding were used. Failure of passive transfer, as determined by calf serum immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) concentration less than 10 mg/ml at 48 hours of age, was diagnosed in 61.4% of calves from a dairy in which calves were nursed by their dams, 19.3% of calves from a dairy using nipple-bottle feeding, and 10.8% of calves from a dairy using tube feeding. The management factor determined to have the greatest influence on the probability of failure of passive transfer in the herds using artificial methods of colostrum feeding (bottle feeding or tube feeding) was the volume of colostrum fed as it affected the amount of IgG1 received by the calf. In dairies that used artificial feeding methods, failure of passive transfer was infrequent in calves fed greater than or equal to 100 g IgG1 in the first colostrum feeding. In the dairy that allowed calves to suckle, prevalence of failure of passive transfer was greater than 50% even among calves nursed by cows with above-average colostral IgG1 concentration. Analysis of the effect of other management factors on calf immunoglobulin absorption revealed small negative effects associated with the use of previously frozen colostrum and the use of colostrum from cows with long nonlactating intervals.  相似文献

Fluoride intoxication in dairy calves   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Chronic fluoride intoxication in dairy cattle, caused by feeding fluoride contaminated commercial feed, was previously described in a dairy herd. Dental fluorosis and a catastrophic decrease in milk yield were the foremost findings. In calves born to the fluoride intoxicated cows, congenital fluorosis was manifested by brown discoloration of enamel, enamel hypoplasia, brown mottling of bone, severe retardation of cartilage cell differentiation, atrophy of osteoblasts, osteopenia, atrophy of bone marrow cells, serous atrophy of bone marrow fat and severely stunted growth.  相似文献

Transmission of the rickettsial organisms Cowdria ruminantium (cause of heartwater) by the elephant tick Amblyomma tholloni has been demonstrated. Larvae fed on infected sheep successfully transmitted the disease causing organisms in both the nymphal and adult stages. Nymphs similarly infected transmitted the organisms as adults. Transovarian transmission did not occur. The results are discussed in relation to the epidemiology and control of heartwater in areas infested with A. tholloni.  相似文献

Calves (n = 106) on four dairy farms were observed for their approachability to humans. All calves experienced similar rearing conditions: Beginning individual pen, after birth until weaning at about 2 months, where they were housed individually and fed milk and a milk replacement; Late individual pen, after weaning until grouping at about 3.5 months, where they were housed individually and fed hay, silage and concentrate feed; Beginning group pen, after grouping until 5 months, where they were housed in groups of 2–5 animals and fed hay, silage and concentrate feed; later group pen, from 5 to 7 months. The number of calves that contacted an experimenter who stood in front of their pens for 10 min was recorded on 6 separate days over 3 months. Latency to touch and time spent in activities during touching such as sucking, licking, biting and rubbing were also measured. There were no significant differences in the latency to touch and the ratio of touch to non‐touch calves between the rearing conditions and the farms. The time spent touching was significantly affected by the interaction between the rearing condition and the farm (P < 0.01). In detail, the time spent sucking (P < 0.001) and licking (P < 0.01) was different between the rearing condition × farm variables. The proportion of calves that approached and touched the experimenter tended to be higher in the farms in which a stockperson worked longer inside and outside their pens (both ρ = 0.95, P = 0.051). These results were interpreted according to the perspectives of early positive reinforcement with food and the habituation process to humans existing nearby.  相似文献

Many experimental infection studies with bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) have been conducted, but neither virus transmission under natural conditions nor longitudinal clinical effects of naturally occurring infections in non-experimental populations are well explored. We tested the hypotheses that BIV is transmitted across the placenta during gestation and that intragestionally infected calves are at increased risk of neonatal disease. A cohort of 59 dairy cows on one farm were enrolled at parturition and the BIV serostatus of the cows and their pre-colostral calves determined with an indirect fluorescent-antibody assay. Moreover, the enrolled calves were monitored thrice weekly for specific clinical signs through the duration of the 30 day neonatal period and the occurrence of clinical signs analyzed for association with calf pre-colostral BIV serostatus and dam BIV serostatus. Confounding due to calf passive immunity and season of birth were also explored. Forty percent of seropositive cows (14/35) gave birth to seropositive calves but no seropositive calves (0/19) were born to seronegative dams (estimated relative risk 16, 95% exact confidence interval 2.6–5.8×1029). Calf pre-colostral BIV serostatus was not associated with the occurrence or frequency of clinical signs — but dam BIV serostatus was associated with the odds of occurrence of calf hyperthermia and with the frequency of occurrence of calf hyperthermia and hyperventilatory events. This study is inconclusive about the effects of prenatal BIV infection on neonatal health — but it does provide evidence for the natural occurrence of transplacental BIV infection.  相似文献

Nineteen Holstein-Friesian bull calves were inoculated with 2.4 × 106 sporocysts of Eimeria zuernii by stomach tube. The calves were divided into three groups 10 days after infection. The first group (seven calves) was treated with monensin (1 mg/kg body weight daily) from the 10th–20th day after infection; the second group (six calves) with amprolium (10 mg/kg body weight daily) for the same period of time and the third group (six calves) acted as infected controls. Both drugs were effective in preventing clinical signs, in reducing rates of weight gain and in suppressing oocyst production. The calves were reinfected with E. zuernii 35 days after the initial infection. The calves of all three groups were resistant to the second infection with E. zuernii as measured by rates of weight gain, fecal oocyst output and lack of clinical signs.  相似文献

Mycoplasma alkalescens-induced arthritis in dairy calves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mycoplasma alkalescens was isolated from 6 of 7 synovial fluid samples taken by arthrocentesis from 3-week- to 4-month-old Holstein-Friesian calves with severe arthritis (tibiotarsal or carpal joints). Approximately 30 of 215 calves in the herd were affected. In one 6-week-old calf, M alkalescens was isolated from the liver, right tibiotarsal joint, right and left popliteal lymph nodes, and an exposed umbilical artery. Intraarticular inoculations of broth cultures of M alkalescens initially induced a febrile response and then severe fibrinopurulent arthritis. Intravenous inoculation of M alkalescens induced only a febrile response. The natural disease may have been a complication of umbilical exposure to M alkalescens, causing omphaloarteritis and subsequent arthritis. Before and during the arthritis problem, the umbilicus of newborn calves was dipped in an organic iodine product with 10% glycerin, marketed as a postmilking teat dip. After the cause of the arthritis was determined, the umbilicus of each newborn calf was treated with 7% tincture of iodine and no new cases of arthritis occurred.  相似文献

A small but significant reduction in the number of Mycoplasma dispar colonising the respiratory tract after intratracheal challenge was observed in gnotobiotic-calves previously inoculated subcutaneously three times with formalin-killed organisms and oil adjuvant. Injection of M. dispar by the intramuscular route, with oil adjuvant, and 2 weeks later by the intratracheal route, without adjuvant, failed to induce immunity to subsequent intratracheal challenge.Following the subcutaneous injection of killed M. dispar, the amount of antibody detected by single radial haemolysis (SRH) increased markedly with increasing age in groups of calves with average ages of 16 to 155 days when first injected. Most calves aged less than 40 days failed to produce an antibody response to a singel injection of M. dispar. With M. bovis a smaller difference was observed between antibody levels generated in calves of different ages; also, calves less than 40 days old produced a detectable SRH antibody response following a single injection of killed M. bovis.IgG1 and IgG2 antibody to M. dispar and M. bovis were measured by ELISA. IgG1 appeared before IgG2 antibody and this was particularly pronounced in younger calves. Also, for both mycoplasmas IgG2 antibody levels were lower in younger than older calves. The IgG1 response to M. dispar was compared in three groups of calves with average ages of 16, 55 and 155 days and was greatest in the oldest and least in the youngest animals. In contrast, the IgG1 response to M. bovis varied little in calves of different ages. It therefore appears that the immune response of young calves to M. dispar is impaired or defective.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the feeding ability of calves during the first 4 days after birth.

METHODS: The sucking behaviour of 171 dairy calves, fed from individual bottles during the first 4 days after birth, was evaluated by quantifying the volume of colostrum consumed, the duration of feeding, and speed of drinking. Calves had been separated from their mothers and brought into a rearing shed in the morning, when <24 h of age, and were offered 2 L colostrum from a bottle in the afternoon of the same day, and twice daily thereafter.

RESULTS: Newborn calves became efficient suckers from bottles within 24 h of removal from their dams (collection). On the day after birth, 95% of calves drank the 2 L of colostrum offered during the afternoon feed, and by Day 4 virtually all calves (99%) drank this amount. Calves that had inadequate colostrum from their dam were more likely to drink all 2 L offered after collection, but a small number of calves that had not had colostrum from their dams and drank <500 ml at the afternoon feed following collection were likely not to drink 2 L on the following days. However, calves that did not drink all 2 L on Day 1 were not disadvantaged in comparison to those that did, in that they were equally likely to drink 2 L on Day 4.

CONCLUSIONS: The majority of calves became efficient drinkers within 48 hours of birth, but a small number of slow feeders may need individual feeding at least up to 4 days after birth.  相似文献

Passive transfer of immunity to neonatal calves against Taenia saginata was examined. Immune serum immunoglobulins were obtained from cattle inoculated orally with eggs of T. saginata, and from an animal which had been injected intramuscularly with eggs and activated oncospheres of the parasite. Immune colostral immunoglobulins were obtained by local injection of the mammary gland of a preparturient cow using activated oncospheres of T. saginata as antigen.Newborn calves fed the immune serum or colostral immunoglobulins were significantly protected against infection with T. saginata. In addition, more than 80% of the metacestodes in the protected calves showed evidence of degeneration, while only 34 and 27% of the metacestodes showed evidence of degeneration in those animals receiving “normal” control serum and “normal” control colostral immunoglobulins, respectively.  相似文献

Immunity to colonization of the respiratory tract by Mycoplasma bovis (formerly Mycoplasma agalactiae subsp. bovis was induced in calves by inoculation of formalin inactivated organisms. Animals inoculated intramuscularly and then intratracheally with inactivated mycoplasmas had significantly fewer M. bovis in their lungs, compared with non-vaccinated animals, 3 weeks after intratracheal challenge with viable organisms. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the numbers of M. bovis isolated from the lungs of control animals and of calves given two intramuscular inoculations of inactivated organisms. These results indicate that stimulation of the local immune system is important in the development of resistance to M. bovis respiratory infection following vaccination with inactivated organisms.  相似文献

In this study we used field data collected from October 2001 to January 2002 to estimate number of days of faecal excretion of Salmonella Dublin bacteria and time to seroconversion in infected calves below the age of 180 days. Based on these estimates all calves in four endemically infected dairy herds were grouped into the following infection states: susceptible (S), infectious (I) and resistant/recovered (R). Resistant calves had either acquired maternal antibodies through colostrum or they have recovered from previous infection and had a high level of antibodies directed against Salmonella Dublin possibly protecting them from becoming infected again until the level of antibodies had decreased to sufficiently low levels. Using the antibody measurements and faecal excretion periods, it was possible to assign the most likely infection state to each calf per week of the study period. Estimates of transmission parameter, beta, were obtained from a generalised linear model relating the number of new infections to the proportion of susceptible and infectious calves per week. From beta, the reproduction ratio R at steady state and the basic reproduction ratio R(0) were estimated for each herd and across herds. The R(0) denotes the average number of new infections caused by one infectious individual that is introduced to a fully susceptible population. The point estimates for R(0) ranged from 1.1 to 2.7 in the study herds. However, the confidence intervals were wide. Data were too limited to show possible significant differences in the parameters between the study herds. However, the tendency in the data suggested that there may be important differences. Across herds the R(0) was close to two suggesting that on average one infectious calf will produce two new infectious calves when introduced into a fully susceptible population under typical Danish dairy production systems. Further, the analyses indicated that environmental contamination from infectious calves plays an important role in transmitting Salmonella Dublin between calves.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the distribution of drying times of umbilical cords of dairy calves and to determine if cord dryness is a reliable indicator of age. DESIGN: An observational study was undertaken in a spring calving herd in Victoria, of the umbilical cords of 188 calves (82 Friesian bulls, 82 Friesian heifers, 24 crossbreds). PROCEDURE: Umbilical cords were examined daily, visually and by palpation, until the cord to the junction of the skin on the abdomen of the calf was dry, shrivelled and inflexible. RESULTS: Drying times ranged from 1 to 8 days. By the fifth day of life, the umbilical cords of 96.7% of all calves, 97.5% Friesian heifer calves, 87.5% of Friesian bull calves and 100% of cross-bred calves were dry. If cord dryness only was used to select calves for sale, 91.3% of all calves, 86.4% of Friesian bull calves and 100% of cross bred calves could have been sold before their fifth day of life. If calves were selected on age only, 3.3% of all calves, 2.5% of Friesian heifer calves and 12.5% of Friesian bull calves would have been sold before their umbilical cord was dry. CONCLUSION: The dairy industry cannot rely on cord dryness alone as an indicator of age for selection of calves for sale and transportation. Cord dryness is a poor indicator of age.  相似文献
