Greyface (Border Leicester × Scottish Blackface) ewes, mated in October, were housed in winter and turned out after lambing in late March to one of four treatments replicated three times on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)-dominated pastures. On three of the treatments the stocking rate was 12·5 ewes plus lambs ha?1 annum?1 (SR12·5), whereas on the fourth it was 15·0 ewes plus lambs ha?1 annum?1 (SR15·0). There were two levels of applied fertilizer nitrogen (N), 152 kg N ha?1 annum?1 (N152) and 205 kg N ha?1 annum?1 (N205). Three patterns of nitrogen application were used: predominantly in spring (E), predominantly in autumn (L), and mainly in spring and autumn (E + L). Grazed sward surface height was controlled within the range 3·5–5·5 cm during spring and summer, and supplementary feed was offered when sward height was below 3·5 cm. The effects on animal performance, yield of silage and requirement for supplementary feed were measured over 3 years (1986–88). Management of the sward height within the specified limits resulted in similar levels of individual animal performance for all treatments, but treatment SR15·0N205E + L produced a significantly (P < 0·05) greater output of lamb per hectare. There was no evidence to suggest that, by increasing the amount of N fertilizer applied in the autumn, ewe reproductive performance was increased. Neither the treatment with the lower level of N applied in the spring (SR12·5N152L) nor the high stocking rate treatment (SR15·0N205E + L) was self-sufficient in winter feed (silage) production. SR15·0N205E + L also required more supplementary feed in both the lactation (38·1 kg ewe?1) and the mating (9·1 kg ewe?1) periods. SR12·5N152L required the second greatest amount of supplementary feed during lactation (36·1 kg ewe?1), whereas SR12·5N205E + L required the least supplementary feed over both periods (27·8 kg and 4·8 kg ewe?1). Taking all treatments together, there were significant (P < 0·05) differences between years in lamb weaning weight (kg), lamb output (kg ha?1), yield of silage (kg ewe?1) and supplementary feed required (kg ewe?1), arising mainly from a lower level of herbage production in one year. Grazed sward surface height was controlled within the range 3·25–4·75 cm during spring and summer in two experiments. In Experiment 1, the effects of stocking two breeds of ewe of similar size but different potential levels of reproductive performance [Brecknock Cheviot (C) and Beulah Speckled Face (B)] at different annual stocking rates of twelve (SR12) and twenty (SR20) per hectare, rates of nitrogen fertilizer of 100 (N100) and 200 (N200) kg N ha?1 annum?1 and different lamb:ewe ratios (C1·2, B1·2 and B1·5) were measured in four treatments (SR20N200C1·2; SR20N200B1·2; SR20N200B1·5; SR12N100C1·2) replicated three times. In each of three years animal performance and yield of silage from areas of pasture surplus to grazing requirements were measured. In Experiment 2, breed B was compared with the Welsh Mule (W) breed, a larger with a higher potential reproductive performance, at two stocking rates, two rates of nitrogen fertilizer and two lamb:ewe ratios set on the basis of results from Experiment 1 (SR18N200B1·5; SR12N100B1·5; SR18N200W1·5; SR18N200W1·7). The treatments were replicated three times. The same terminal sire (Suffolk) was used in both experiments. A primary aim of the experiments was to test the validity of the experimental procedures used for comparing breeds of sheep where nutrition is provided predominately from grazed pastures. In Experiment 1, there was no difference between breeds C and B in the live weights of individual lambs at weaning at the same SR (20), N rate (200) and lamb:ewe ratio (1·2). Breeds C and B produced similar total yields of lamb (633 kg lamb ha?1± 10·5) and silage (193 kg DM ewe?1± 37·7), but breed B had a higher level of potential reproductive performance (1·59 vs. 1·37 lambs ewe?1: P < 0·001). The treatments SR20N200B1·5 and SR12N100C1·2 produced, respectively, greater and lesser yields of lamb (725 vs. 384 kg lamb ha?1, P < 0·001) and lesser and greater yields of silage (123 vs. 327 kg DM ewe?1, P < 0·001). In Experiment 2, the live weight of lambs at weaning from breed W were heavier than from breed B (29·1 vs. 26·2 kg lamb?1, P < 0·01) but there was no significant difference in total yield of lamb weaned between breeds W and B at the same SR (18), N rate (200) and lamb:ewe ratio (1·5) (747 kg lamb ha?1± 19·2), or in the yield of silage (66 kg DM ewe?1± 16·4), but breed W had a higher potential reproductive performance (1·85 vs. 1·58 lambs ewe?1, P < 0·05). The treatments SR18N200W1·7 and SR12N100B1·5 produced, respectively, greater and lesser yields of lamb (840 vs. 473 kg lamb ha?1, P < 0·001) and similar and greater yields of silage (60 vs. 141 kg DM ewe?1, P < 0·05). The experimental approach adopted and the management protocols used provided a basis for ranking the performance of the breeds of ewes examined at appropriate levels of annual stocking rate, N-fertilizer input and lamb:ewe ratio.  相似文献

The benefits of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in pastures are widely recognized. However, white clover is perceived as being unreliable due to its typically low content and spatial and temporal variability in mixed (grass‐legume) pastures. One solution to increase the clover proportion and quality of herbage available to grazing animals may be to spatially separate clover from grass within the same field. In a field experiment, perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover were sown as a mixture and compared with alternating strips of ryegrass and clover (at 1·5 and 3 m widths), or in adjacent monocultures (strips of 18 m width within a 36‐m‐wide field). Pastures were stocked by ewes and lambs for three 10‐month grazing periods. Over the 3 years of the experiment, spatial separation of grass and clover, compared with a grass–clover mixture, increased clover herbage production, although its proportion in the sward declined through time (0·49–0·54 vs 0·34 in the mixture in the first year, 0·28–0·33 vs 0·15 in the second year and 0·03–0·18 vs 0·01 in the third year). Total herbage production in the growing season in the spatially separated treatments decreased from 11384 kg DM ha?1 in the first year to 8150 kg DM ha?1 in the third year. Crude protein concentration of clover and grass components in the 18‐m adjacent monoculture treatment was greater than the mixture treatment for both clover (310 vs 280 g kg?1 DM) and grass (200 vs 180 g kg?1 DM). There was no clear benefit in liveweight gain beyond the first year in response to spatially separating grass and clover into monocultures within the same field.  相似文献

Effects of grass silage feed value on intake, dietary sorting, body condition (BC) and body weight (BW) of pregnant and lactating ewes and on liveweight gain (LWG) of their suckling lambs were evaluated. Twin‐bearing ewes were fed ad libitum grass silage of (i) high feed value (HFV), (ii) medium feed value (MFV) and (iii) low feed value (LFV), plus 0·8 kg concentrate in late pregnancy and lactation. The HFV, MFV and LFV silages contained 11·7, 10·8 and 9·3 MJ metabolizable energy (ME) kg?1 DM respectively. The HFV resulted in 8·2 and 15·2 MJ greater ME intake in pregnancy and 14·7 and 21·0 MJ greater ME intake from silage in lactation than MFV and LFV respectively (< 0·01). Ewes fed the MFV and LFV silages sorted for more digestible particles during eating (< 0·10). The HFV gave no loss in BC, whereas ewes fed MFV and LFV lost 0·7 and 0·8 units of BC, respectively, during lactation (< 0·10). There were similar trends in BW. The nursing HFV lambs had 73 g higher daily LWG than the LFV lambs (< 0·01). In conclusion, the HFV increased the ME intake of pregnant and lactating ewes, resulting in improved BC and BW of lactating ewes and LWG of suckling lambs compared to MFV and LFV.  相似文献

Abstract Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of a stay‐green trait in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) on concentrations of fatty acids as well as their susceptibility to peroxidation during wilting and to biohydrogenation by rumen bacteria. Fatty acid concentrations were recorded in stay‐green and corresponding normal perennial ryegrass selection lines over eight cuts during 1998. There was a progressive increase in total fatty acid concentrations [from 20·8 to 34·6 g kg?1 dry matter (DM)] and the proportion of fatty acids as α‐linolenic acid (from 0·62 to 0·70 g g?1) from early to late season. A second study compared fatty acid concentrations in stay‐green and normal herbage that was wilted for up to 48 h. There was a loss of 0·2–0·3 g g?1 fatty acids during 48 h of wilting and a small reduction in the rate of loss of α‐linolenic acid in stay‐green perennial ryegrass compared with normal herbage (0·223 vs. 0·290 g g?1 lost after 48 h). Stay‐green and normal perennial ryegrasses were offered to grazing lambs in a third study. Higher concentrations of trans‐vaccenic acid and conjugated linoleic acid in plasma from lambs offered less mature grass in the pre‐experimental period than during the experiment are considered to reflect a greater supply of precursor (linoleic acid). There were higher concentrations of conjugated linoleic (0·0070 vs. 0·0039 g l?1) and linoleic (0·092 vs. 0·070 g l?1) acids, without an increase in trans‐vaccenic acid, in plasma from lambs grazing stay‐green perennial ryegrass than normal perennial ryegrass. This suggests that the stay‐green trait affected the rate of degradation of fatty acids in the rumen. These results demonstrate the potential for obtaining proportionately large differences in fatty acid profiles of ruminant products by altering grassland management.  相似文献

The combined benefits of a high crude protein concentration, and possible protein protection and growth‐promoting properties, make forage legumes potentially attractive as a natural means of increasing liveweight gain and time to slaughter of lambs in lamb finishing systems. An experiment was conducted to compare the production performance and meat quality of grazing lambs finished on red clover (Trifolium pratense), lucerne (Medicago sativa) or perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) swards. Replicate (n = 2) swards of red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass were rotationally grazed by ten ram lambs and ten ewe lambs from weaning until selection for slaughter at UK fat class 3L. Lambs grazing the red clover sward had a significantly higher liveweight gain and required significantly fewer days to slaughter than lambs grazing the lucerne sward (305 g d?1 vs. 243 g d?1; 38 d vs. 50 d), which in turn had a higher liveweight gain and required fewer days to slaughter than lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (184 g d?1; 66 d). Lambs grazing the red clover and lucerne swards had significantly higher herbage intakes than those grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (2·06, 1·72 and 1·16 kg DM d?1 respectively), but in vivo digestibility of herbage was similar. Lambs grazing the red clover and lucerne swards also had significantly higher serum urea concentrations than those grazing ryegrass (12·5, 11·1 and 6·2 mmol L?1 respectively). Killing‐out percentage was significantly higher for lambs grazing the red clover sward than for lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (48% vs. 46%). There were no significant effects of finishing system on meat flavour, but meat from lambs finished on the lucerne sward was oxidatively less stable than that from lambs finished on the perennial ryegrass sward. Grazing the forage legume swards significantly increased the proportion of linoleic and linolenic acid in muscle tissue, and therefore the proportion of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids (0·19, 0·16 and 0·12 for the red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass swards respectively). However, the n?6/n?3 ratio was significantly lower for the muscle of lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward compared with those grazing the forage legume swards (1·13, 1·08 and 0·98 for the red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass swards respectively). The results indicate that by grazing lambs on forage legume swards it is possible to increase individual lamb performance without compromising meat quality.  相似文献

The increasing cost of N fertilizer has stimulated an interest in sourcing protein from warm‐season legumes among beef cattle producers in the tropical/subtropical areas of the world. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of two strategies of incorporating cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] into bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flügge) pastures on the herbage characteristics and performance of grazing cow–calf pairs. The study was conducted in Ona, Florida, USA, from May to August in 2007 and 2008. Experimental units were 1·0 ha. Treatments were bahiagrass pasture alone (control), 50:50 bahiagrass–cowpea pasture (cowpea), bahiagrass pasture with a cowpea creep grazing area (0·1 ha, creep grazing) and bahiagrass pasture with a creep‐fed concentrate [(creep feeding; 10 g kg?1 body weight (BW)]. The cowpea pastures had lower herbage mass [HM, 1·8 vs. 3·7 t ha?1] and herbage allowance [HA, 0·8 vs. 1·4 kg DM kg?1 live weight (LW)] compared with the other treatments. Cowpea had greater CP (CP, 160 g kg?1) and in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOM), (600 g kg?1) than bahiagrass (110 and 490 g kg?1 respectively); however, cowpea HM was only 0·9 t ha?1 in May and 0·7 t ha?1 in June, but it did not persist in July and August. Calves receiving the creep feeding treatments had greater average daily gain (0·8 vs. 0·7 kg d?1) than calves in other treatments. Further research is necessary to exploit the superior nutritive value of cowpea in grazing systems in the south‐eastern USA.  相似文献

A first cut of timothy, treated with water (untreated), formic acid (FA), cellulase + lactic acid bacteria (CB), cellulase + hemicellulase (CH) or cellulase + hemicellulase + a lignin-modifying enzyme (CHL), was ensiled in pilot-scale silos. Silages, except CB, were fed to four male cattle, each equipped with a rumen and duodenal cannula, in a digestibility trial designed as a 4 × 4 Latin square. The animals were fed a diet of 400 g of concentrate and 600 g of silage at a level of 70 g DM kg?1 live weight (LW0·75). All enzyme-treated silages were well-preserved with a more extensive fermentation than in FA silage. The quality of untreated silage was poorer as indicated by higher pH and ammonia-N content. The amount of effluent from enzyme-treated silages ranged from 116 to 127 g kg?1; for FA and untreated silages values were 101 g kg?1 and 80 g kg?1, respectively. Total DM losses from enzyme-treated silages were higher than from FA silage (P < 0·05). No significant differences were noticed between silages in the apparent digestibility of organic matter (OM), neutral-detergent fibre (NDF), acid-detergent fibre (ADF) or nitrogen (N). The apparent digestibility of cellulose was higher with enzyme-treated silages than with FA silage (P < 0·05). The values for microbial N flow at the duodenum were 80·0, 91·9, 80·7 and 70·5g N d?1, and for the efficiency of rumen microbial N synthesis 38·6, 47·6, 36·9 and 32·5 g N kg?1 OM apparently digested in the rumen for untreated, FA, CH and CHL silages, respectively. In the rumen the molar proportion of propionate was higher (P < 0·01) and that of butyrate lower (P < 0·01) with enzyme-treated silages when compared with FA silage. The proportion of butyrate was also lower with untreated than with other silages (P < 0·01). The rumen residence time of NDF and ADF was longer (P < 0·05) with enzyme-treated silages than with FA silage.  相似文献

In 1988 and 1989, swards of grass (G0), while clover (C0) and grass/white clover (GC0) receiving no N fertilizer, and a grass sward supplied with 420 kg N ha?1 (G420), were grazed by non-lactating sheep to maintain a sward surface height of 6 cm. Herbage organic matter (OM) intakes averaged between 1200 and 1700 g OM ewe?1 d?1. For treatments G0, C0, GC0 and G420 respectively, the ewes' live weight gain was 102, 112, 100 and 110 g d?1 and changes in body condition scores were +0·28, +0·52, +0·36 and +0·44 units season?1. However, the effect of treatment was not significant for either variable. There were similar levels of output of faecal N ewe?1 but significantly more urinary N ewe?1 was excreted on treatments C0 and G420, where the concentrations of N in herbage laminae were also higher. For example, in 1989, total daily N excreted was 39·7, 64·4, 44·0 and 63·3 g N ewe?1 for G0, C0, GC0 and G420 respectively. Taking into account the mean daily stocking rates, which were 19·4, 26·6, 27·2 and 36·5 ewe ha?1, the total faeces and urine returns over the season were 161, 358, 249 and 484 kg N ha?1 for each treatment respectively. The herbage OM intakes ewes?1 d?1 measured in September and October were similar for C0 and G420, and so the intake of herbage OM ha?1 d?1 was related to stocking rate, i. e. the estimated herbage intake ha?1 over the growing season for the white clover monoculture was 73% of that for N-fertilized grass. Excretal nitrogen returns to the pasture from grazed mono-cultures of clover were high, and similar to those from a grass sward receiving 420 kg fertilizer N ha?1. Consequently potential losses of N to the environment are high under these management systems.  相似文献

The effect of the proportion of Calluna vulgaris cover on diet composition, intake and performance of sheep grazing hill vegetation communities in northern Spain is examined. A total of 591 non‐lactating Gallega ewes grazed for five consecutive grazing seasons (June to September) on replicated plots of hill pastures (1700 m.a.s.l.) composed principally of Festuca, Agrostis, Nardus and Calluna spp. but with different proportions of Calluna vulgaris cover, either 0·3 (C0·3) or 0·7 (C0·7) of the total area. In 1 year, twenty‐eight ewes suckling single lambs also grazed the plots. The mean stocking density over the 5 years was 8·7 ewes ha–1. On treatment C0·3, daily liveweight gains (33 g d–1) of non‐lactating ewes were significantly (P < 0·001) greater than on treatment C0·7 (12 g d–1). Likewise in lactating ewes the difference in mean daily liveweight change was 40 g d–1 (–5 vs. –45 g d–1 for C0·3 and C0·7 treatments respectively; P < 0·001). Liveweight gains of lambs were only 80–100 g d–1 from June to August and lambs only maintained live weight during August and September. The effect of lactational status on liveweight changes was not significant. Liveweight gains of non‐lactating ewes increased significantly (P < 0·001) from the first to the last year of the experiment on both treatments. The composition of the diet was significantly affected by treatment (P < 0·001), with a higher proportion of grass species on the C0·3 treatment and a higher digestibility of the diet in the first half of the grazing season (P < 0·001). The proportion of C. vulgaris in the diet was significantly (P < 0·001) higher on the C0·7 treatment and increased significantly (P < 0·001) from July to September on both treatments. There were no significant differences in the composition of the diet selected by lactating and non‐lactating ewes. The results demonstrate that on hill vegetation communities, in which the grass components (Festuca rubra, Agrostis capillaris, and Nardus stricta) cover at least 0·3 of the area and on which the preferred grass component (Festuca and Agrostis spp.) is maintained at a sward height of at least 2·5 cm, non‐lactating ewes can increase their live weight and body condition, but this increase is influenced by the proportion and quantity of species of grass in the diet, which is affected in turn by the species of grass available and their nutritive quality. However, ewes suckling lambs were not able to maintain their live weight and body condition except when Calluna cover was 0·3 and grass height was more than 3·5 cm. It is concluded that these indigenous vegetation communities can be used in sheep production systems to complement the use of improved pastures at other times of year. In particular, they can be utilized during the non‐lactating period (summer) to increase body condition before the beginning of the mating period in autumn.  相似文献

Two grazing experiments were conducted on non‐irrigated tall fescue–subterranean clover and cocksfoot–subterranean pastures subject to summer‐dry conditions in Canterbury, New Zealand, to measure the effect of low (8·3–10 ewes and their twin lambs ha?1) vs. high (13·9–20 ewes and their twin lambs ha?1) stocking rates (SR) on lamb and ewe liveweight gain in spring. In tall fescue–subterranean clover pasture, lambs grew faster at low (374 g per head d?1) than high (307 g per head d?1) SR, but total liveweight gain per ha was greater at high (12·3 kg ha?1 d?1) than low (7·5 kg ha?1 d?1) SR. In successive years in spring in cocksfoot–subterranean clover pastures, lambs grew faster at low (327, 385 g per head d?1) than high (253, 285 g per head d?1) SR but total liveweight gain per ha was greater at high (7·26, 7·91 kg ha?1) than low (5·43, 6·38 kg ha?1) SR. These studies indicate that in summer‐dry areas, subterranean clover‐based pastures will support high twin lamb growth rates in spring, with lower SR leading to higher lamb growth rates and more lambs reaching slaughter weights before the onset of dry conditions.  相似文献

Timothy–meadow fescue herbage was ensiled with formic acid (FA) (expressed as 100% solution) at the rates of 0, 2, 4 or 6 L t?1. The silages were fed along with concentrates to bulls fitted with cannulae in the rumen and duodenum. The ration comprised grass silage (700 g kg?1), barley (240 g kg?1) and rapeseed meal (60 g kg?1). The application rate of FA had no effect on the site or extent of the digestion of dietary organic matter (OM) and neutral‐detergent fibre. The flow of total N at the duodenum increased linearly (P < 0·05) with application rate of FA, reflecting mainly an increased (P < 0·01) flow of microbial N. The apparent efficiency of net microbial protein synthesis in the rumen increased (P < 0·05), the proportion of propionate in the volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the rumen was not affected (P > 0·05) but that of butyrate increased (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0·01) with increasing rate of FA. It is concluded that an increase in the rate of FA at ensiling leads to a higher utilization of energy and/or protein‐yielding substrates for rumen microbes and to a modified rumen VFA pattern with an increased proportion of butyrate.  相似文献

The diet selection, made by twelve dry and twelve lactating spring‐calving Salers beef cows at the end of the grazing season on an extensively grazed natural mountain pasture in central France, was compared. Sward structure, selection bites, daily grazing time and digestibility of the diet were measured in mid‐October (P1) and mid‐November (P2). Live weights were measured twice monthly throughout the experiment. Daily milk production was assessed in the week before the grazing behaviour measurements. Lactating cows grazed more selectively than dry cows: they took more bites on green patches (0·20 vs. 0·13 of total bites, P < 0·01; Jacob's selectivity index: 0·13 vs. ?0·25, P < 0·001), which is consistent with the higher overall nitrogen concentration in faeces (18·1 vs. 17·3 g kg?1 DM, P < 0·05). Lactating cows tended to slightly increase their daily grazing time compared with dry cows (on average 9·9 vs. 9·5 h, P = 0·07) and grazed faster in mid‐November (74 vs. 69 bites min?1, P < 0·05). The lactating cows lost more live weight (?24 vs. ?12 kg cow?1, P < 0·05) between P1 and P2. A positive correlation was found between consumption of green patches by lactating cows and their daily milk production in P2 (r = 0·574, P = 0·05), whereas no correlation occurred between individual milk production and liveweight loss. Dry cows were less selective, which supports management practices that promote the use of cows with low requirements on extensively grazed pastures in late season.  相似文献

Effects of wilting, ensiling and type of additive on α‐tocopherol and β‐carotene contents in legume–grass mixtures were examined. Swards of birdsfoot trefoil + timothy (Bft + Ti), red clover + timothy (Rc + Ti) and red clover + meadow fescue (Rc + Mf) were harvested as a first regrowth in August 2005. Forage was wilted to a dry‐matter (DM) content of 273 g kg?1 and ensiled without additive or with an inoculant or acid. Wilting decreased α‐tocopherol concentration by 30% in the Bft + Ti mixture (P = 0·015). Untreated Bft + Ti silage had higher α‐tocopherol content than red clover silages (56·9 vs. 34·2 mg kg?1 DM; P = 0·015). The α‐tocopherol concentration of Bft + Ti forages increased during ensiling from 41·1 mg kg?1 DM in wilted herbage to 56·9, 65·2 and 56·8 mg kg?1 DM in untreated, inoculated and acid‐treated silage respectively (P = 0·015). The inoculant increased α‐tocopherol content in the red clover silages (50·1 vs. 34·2 mg kg?1 DM; P = 0·015) compared with untreated red clover silages. Red clover mixtures had lower β‐carotene content than Bft + Ti (32·3 vs. 46·2 mg kg?1 DM; P = 0·016), averaged over treatments. In conclusion, wilting had small effects but the use of bacterial inoculant as an additive and a Bft + Ti mixture increased α‐tocopherol concentration in the silage.  相似文献

In three successive years, sward height was maintained at 3, 5, 7 or 9 cm on grass swards receiving a total of 300 kg N ha?1 in six equal monthly dressings from April, and on grass/clover swards receiving 50 kg N ha?1 as a single dressing in early spring. From turnout in April until weaning in July, 64 ewes and their lambs (mean litter size 1·5) were continuously grazed at the four sward surface heights on the two sward types. White clover content of grass/clover swards remained low throughout the experiment ranging from 0·2 to 7·4% of the herbage mass. During the first two years, lamb gains averaged over sward types were 204, 260, 285 and 308 g d?1 up to weaning, while in the third year gains were 238, 296, 296 and 260 g d?1 on 3, 5, 7 and 9 cm swards respectively. Ewes lost live weight on 3 cm swards but apart from this sward height had little effect on performance. During the autumn, weaned lambs gained — 27, 87, 147 and 167 g d?1 on 3, 5, 7 and 9 cm swards respectively. Sward type had only a small effect on the performance of lambs up to weaning but in the autumn, mean gains of weaned lambs were lower on grass/N swards (73 g d?1) than on grass/clover swards (115 g d?1). Relative to 3 cm swards, carrying capacities of 5, 7 and 9 cm swards were 0·76, 0·57 and 0·52 respectively from turnout to weaning and 0·66, 0·52 and 0·44 respectively during autumn. Grass/clover swards carried 0·67 of the ewes carried by grass/N swards from turnout to weaning and 0·51 of the live weight carried by grass/N swards during autumn. The reaction of the two sward types to sward height did not appear to differ but in the third year there was evidence of a reduction in white clover content when swards were grazed at 9 cm. The data suggest that lamb growth rates will increase as sward height increases up to 9 cm and the evidence for this was stronger with weaned lambs in autumn than with suckling lambs in spring.  相似文献

The selection and feeding of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) varieties (PRV) or perennial grass species (PGS) may affect enteric methane (CH4) output because of changes in the fermentation dynamics in the rumen as a result of differences in herbage chemical composition. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of PRV and PGS harvested throughout the growing season on herbage chemical composition, and in vitro rumen fermentation variables and CH4 output per unit of feed using a batch culture technique. Seven PRV (Experiment 1: Alto, Arrow, Bealey, Dunluce, Greengold, Malone, Tyrella) and six perennial grasses [Experiment 2: perennial ryegrass (Navan), perennial ryegrass (Portstewart), cocksfoot, meadow fescue, tall fescue, timothy; defined as PGS], managed under a simulated grazing regime, were incubated for 24 h with buffered rumen fluid in two separate experiments. The CH4 output per unit of feed dry‐matter (DM) incubated was not affected (P > 0·05) by PRV (range of mean values across PRV of 23·9–25·3 (SEM 0·41) mL g?1 DM) or by PGS (25·6–26·6 (SEM 0·37) mL g?1 DM). The CH4 output per unit feed DM disappearing during the in vitro rumen incubation was not affected by PRV (33·9–35·1 (SEM 0·70) mL g?1 DM), and although there was an overall PGS effect (P < 0·05; 37·2–40·3 (SEM 0·71) mL g?1 DM), none of the paired contrasts between PGS were significant when analysed using Tukey adjusted comparisons. This outcome reflected either small‐scale or a lack of treatment effects on individual herbage chemical composition (e.g. 454–483 g NDF kg?1 DM, 215–224 g CP kg?1 DM and 94–122 g water‐soluble carbohydrate (WSC) kg?1 DM across PRV; 452–506 g NDF kg?1 DM, 208–243 g CP kg?1 DM and 73–131 g WSC kg?1 DM across PGS) and in vitro rumen fermentation variables. Hence, these results provide no encouragement that choices among the grasses examined, produced within the management regimes operated, would reduce enteric CH4 output per unit of feed in vivo. However, the technique utilized did not take account of animal × PRV or PGS interactions, such as potential differences in intake between animals, that may occur under farm conditions.  相似文献

A simple multiplicative model using temperature, foliage nitrogen (N) concentration and water status was developed to predict the maximum photosynthetic rate (Pmax) of field‐grown cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) leaves when none, one, two or all the factors were limiting. The highest Pmax was 27·4 μmol CO2 m–2 s?1 in non‐limited conditions, which was defined as the standardized Pmax value dimensionless (Pmaxs=1). Pmaxs increased 0·058 units per °C from 10°C to the optimum range (19–23°C) (Pmaxs=1) and then declined 0·077 units of Pmaxs per °C from 23 to 31°C. Pmaxs=1 was also measured from 59 to 52 g N kg?1 dry matter (DM) foliage N. Pmaxs then decreased at the rate of 0·115 units per 10 g N kg?1 DM from 52 to 26 g N kg?1 DM, and 0·409 units of Pmaxs per 10 g N kg?1 DM from 26 to 15 g N kg?1 DM. For predawn leaf water potential (ψlp), Pmaxs=1 was measured from ?0·1 to ?1·2 bar but declined linearly at a rate of 0·078 units per bar of ψlp from ?1·2 to ?14·0 bar because of a linear decrease in stomatal conductance. An interaction between low N content (≤20 g N kg?1 DM) and high temperature (>23°C) was also detected. Together, this multiplicative model accounted for 0·82 of the variation in Pmaxs.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of using a trailing‐shoe system to apply cattle slurry, under different conditions of grass height (low [LG]: freshly cut sward [4–5 cm height] vs. high [HG]: application delayed by 7–19 d and applied to taller grass sward [4–11 cm] height) and month of application (June vs. April), on the nitrogen fertilizer replacement value (NFRV) and apparent N recovery (ANRS) of cattle slurry applied to grassland. NFRV was calculated using two methods: (i) NFRVN based on the apparent recovery of slurry‐N relative to that of mineral‐N fertilizer; and (ii) NFRVDM based on DM yield. The effect of applying slurry into HG swards, relative to LG swards, decreased the DM yield by 0·47 t ha?1 ( 0·001), N uptake by 5 kg ha?1 (P = 0·05), ANRS by 0·05 kg kg?1 (P = 0·036), NFRVN by 0·05 kg kg?1 (P = 0·090) and NFRVDM by 0·11 kg kg?1 (< 0·001). It was concluded that the main factor causing these decreases with HG, compared with LG applications, was wheel damage affecting subsequent N uptake and growth of the taller grass sward.  相似文献

First and second harvests of lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and a lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture [80 or 144 g kg?1 dry matter (DM) of ryegrass] at the first and second harvests were cut and conditioned, wilted to 500 or 700 g DM kg?1 then baled and stretch‐wrapped for silage on the same dates. Lucerne bales were denser (411 kg m?3) than bales of perennial ryegrass (331 kg m?3) (P < 0·05). After an 8‐month storage period, silage made from high DM‐content forage had a higher concentration of neutral‐detergent fibre (NDF) and was less digestible than that made from low DM‐content forage. Daily DM intakes by beef steers, when the silages of the second harvest were fed ad libitum, were 31·2, 31·2 and 22·3 g kg?1 live weight for lucerne, lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture and perennial ryegrass silages, respectively (P < 0·01), when the herbage had been wilted to 500 g kg?1. In vivo digestibility of NDF in the lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture silage (0·587) was significantly lower than that of perennial ryegrass silage (0·763) but higher than lucerne silage (0·518). Higher intakes of baled lucerne silage tended to offset its lower digestibility values. Lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture silage had a higher DM and NDF digestibility than lucerne silage, indicating perhaps the presence of associative effects.  相似文献

In two changeover design experiments, fifteen early- and sixteen late-lactation cows were used to investigate the effects of offering food beet with ad libitum grass silage and concentrates with different CP content on milk yield and quality. In Experiment 1 (early lactation) cows were offered no fodder beet (0) or 4 kg DM d?1 (4) in conjunction with one of three concentrates containing 159, 191 or 244g CP kg?1 DM (L.M.H.). Treatments were therefore 1L/0, 1L/4, 1M/0, 1M/4, 1H/0 and 1H/4. In Experiment 2 (late lactation) cows were offered the same level of fodder beet in conjunction with two concentrates containing 129 and 229 (L,H) g CP kg?1 DM. Treatments were therefore 2L/0, 2L/4, 2H/0 and 2H/4. In both experiments feeding fodder beet reduced silage DM intakes (P < 0·001) and increased total DM intake (P < 0·05 to P < 0·001). The substitution rate (r) ranged from 0·46 to 0·59kg of silage DM (kg?1 fodder beet DM). In Experiment 1, fodder beet tended to increase milk yield, composition and yield of constituents, but the effect was statistically significant for milk protein content only (P < 0·01). In Experiment 2, milk yields for 2L/0, 2L/4, 2H/0 and 2H/4 were 11·3, 12·1, 11·7 and 12·5 kg d?1 respectively (s.e.d. 0·43, non-significant), fat contents were 44·4, 47·3, 44·3 and 46·8g fat kg?1 respectively (s.e.d. 0·73, P < 0·001), protein contents were 34·3, 35·6, 35·3 and 36·2 g protein kg?1 respectively (s.e.d. 0·28, P < 0·001), fat yields were 494, 574, 512 and 579 g fat d?1 respectively (s.e.d. 20, P < 0·001) and protein yields were 385, 426, 407 and 442 g protein d?1 (s.e.d. 13, P < 0·01) respectively. Increasing CP in the concentrate significantly increased milk yield in Experiment 1 (23·9, 22·5, 23·5, 23·8, 26·2, 26·5kg d?1 for 1L/0, 1L/4, 1M/0, 1M/4, 1H/0 and 1H/4 respectively, P < 0·05). Higher CP in concentrate also resulted in significantly increased milk protein yield in early-lactation (P < 0·001) and milk protein content in late-lactation (P < 0·01) cows. There was a significant interaction between fodder beet and concentrate CP content for milk protein yield (P < 0·001) in Experiment 1.  相似文献
