Water-use efficiency (WUEDM) is directly related to radiation-use efficiency (RUE) and inversely related to crop conductance (gc). We propose that reduced WUEDM caused by shortage of nitrogen results from a reduction in RUE proportionally greater than the fall in conductance. This hypothesis was tested in irrigated wheat crops grown with contrasting nitrogen supply; treatments were 0, 80 and 120 kg N ha−1 in 1998 and 0, 80, 120 and 160 kg N ha−1 in 1999. We measured shoot dry matter, yield, intercepted solar radiation and soil water balance components. From these measurements, we derived actual evapotranspiration (ET), soil evaporation and transpiration, WUEDM (slope of the regression between dry matter and ET), WUEY (ratio between grain yield and ET), RUE (slope of the regression between dry matter and intercepted radiation), and gc (slope of the regression between transpiration and intercepted radiation). Yield increased from 2.3 in unfertilised to an average 4.7 t ha−1 in fertilised crops, seasonal ET from 311 to 387 mm, WUEDM from 23 to 37 kg ha−1 mm−1, WUEY from 7.6 to 12.4 kg ha−1 mm−1, RUE from 0.85 to 1.07 g MJ−1, while the fraction of ET accounted for soil evaporation decreased from 0.20 to 0.11. In agreement with our hypothesis, RUE accounted for 60% of the variation in WUEDM, whereas crop conductance was largely unaffected by nitrogen supply. A greater fraction of evapotranspiration lost as soil evaporation also contributed to the lower WUEDM of unfertilised crops.  相似文献

Lesquerella fendleri (Gray) Wats. is a potential new oilseed crop for the arid southwestern United States. Lesquerella seed oil with similar properties as castor oil is being considered as a domestic replacement for the imported castor oil. Development of new crops with low irrigation needs is of high priority. Because the most critical stage of sensitivity to moisture deficits has not been determined in Lesquerella species, the objectives of this study were: (i) to identify the most critical stage or stages for moisture deficit and, (ii) to determine the effect of moisture deficit on yield, yield components, oil and fatty acid composition. Two-year field studies were conducted at the New Mexico State University, Leyendecker Plant Science Research Center. The experimental design was a randomized complete block. The treatments consisted of (a) T1: Continuous favorable soil moisture [irrigated at 50% soil water depletion (SWD)]. (b) T2: Moisture stress (75% SWD) from establishment to initial flowering with no stress from flowering to final harvest (50% SWD). (c) T3: No stress imposed from establishment to initial flowering (50% SWD) followed by stress to final harvest (75% SWD). (d) T4: Moisture stress (75% SWD) from establishment to final harvest. The amount of water applied ranged from 810 to 729 mm for the first year, and 810 to 625 mm for the second year. Seed weight per plant and number of pods per plant were generally higher when water availability was maintained at or above 50% SWD throughout the growing season. Neither seed number per pod nor seed size was influenced by irrigation treatments. Lesquerella was more sensitive to water availability during flowering and seed development as a greater loss in seed yield occurred when irrigation was delayed to 75% SWD during that stage of development. Seed yield and dry matter production from the 2 year field studies were closely related to the seasonal cumulative evapotranspiration. For each millimeter of evapotranspiration, seed yield increased from 1.8 kg ha−1 mm in 1994–1995 to 1.3 kg ha−1 mm for 1995–1996. The dry matter production increased 13.4 kg ha−1 for each mm increase in seasonal evapotranspiration during 1994–1995. This relationship was a second order polynomial with an R2 of 0.86 during 1995–1996. The WUEgr and WUEdm were highest under the most favorable water availability conditions for growth and seed development. Delaying irrigation to 75% SWD throughout the crop growth period resulted in the lowest oil content. Lesquerolic acid content was not affected by irrigation during both the growing seasons.  相似文献

Despite the economic importance of tobacco, there is limited field study on the quantitative response of growth and yield to increasing soil salinity. The effects of irrigation with saline water on yield components of field-grown tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) “Burley” type plants were studied over two growing seasons. Growth, dry matter partitioning and gas exchange were measured either in rainfed or fully irrigated plants growing in a clayey–sandy–loam soil. The four fully irrigated treatments received amounts of saline waters at 0.54, 2.5, 5.0 or 10 dS m−1 electrical conductivity (ECw) equal to crop evapotranspiration. In both years, the electrical conductivity of the saturation phase (ECe) across the 0.6 m topsoil profile increased with increasing salinity of the irrigation water. Soil moisture was markedly lower in the rainfed treatment than in fully irrigated treatments. Different saline concentrations of irrigation water had virtually no effect on soil moisture. Carbon assimilation rate, stomatal conductance and water use efficiency of the saline treatments were lower than the fully irrigated plants at 0.54 dS m−1 (NW treatment) in 1996, but not in 1997. Transpiration rates were unaffected by salinity in both years. The highest yield was produced by plants irrigated with good quality water. The number of leaves per unit land area was greater for the NW plants, whereas there were no differences between the other four treatments. Salinity decreased plant dry matter and height at harvest, increased dry matter partitioning into leaves and decreased that into stems in both years. Dry matter partitioning to leaves was also greater for the rainfed plants than for the NW plants. Tobacco plants grown under field conditions showed a maximum reduction of relative yield at the highest salinity level of only 31%. The threshold values (0.56 and 0.96 dS m−1) and the ECe at which a 10% yield reduction was obtained (3.12 and 2.55 dS m−1) calculated from the linear model of response of relative yield to increasing ECe were typical of moderately sensitive crops. The ECe values at which 50% yield was reduced (13.34 and 8.91 dS m−1) were indicative of moderate tolerance to salinity.  相似文献

Stalk water content is an important variable for a sugarcane simulation model as sugar industries in many countries use cane yield and sucrose content on a wet mass basis for payment and yield reports. The prime objective was to develop a stalk water content module (SWCM) that can be incorporated into a sugarcane simulation model. SWCM starts from consideration of the dynamics of water concentration (ρ, g water g−1 dry matter) along stalks and through seasons. The quantities of stalk water were modelled separately for the top and basal sections of the millable stalks. Field observations showed that the stalk water concentration (ρ) declined from 7.8 to 11.8 in the top internodes to 1.6–2.9 g water g−1 dry matter in bottom internodes. In the basal section, ρ ranged from 1.98 in winter to 2.83 g water g−1 stalk dry matter in summer. A two-parameter equation was used to model ρ and resulted in a range of coefficients of determination from 0.8 to 0.97 for six varieties. The SWCM was developed to simulate both the effects of seasonal variation and the age of internodes on the quantity of stalk water. The module was incorporated into a process oriented model of sugarcane growth for validation against field observations in tropical and subtropical areas of Australia and Hawaii, USA. Comparison of observed yields with cane yield simulated by the model that included the SWCM, gave an average of R2 of 0.95, compared with the average of R2 of 0.97 for simulation of stalk dry matter. The average relative root mean squared error (RMSE) was 15.2% in simulation of cane yield and 15.1% for simulation of cane dry weight. The module can be readily incorporated into a model that simulates sugarcane dry matter so that commercial crop yield can be estimated.  相似文献

The perennial C4 grass Miscanthus has been proposed as a biomass energy crop in Europe. Effects of crop age, irrigation and nitrogen fertilization on biomass and energy yields and N content of Miscanthus were investigated and the energy costs of production determined. After an establishment period of 1 year, cultivation of Miscanthus resulted in a dry matter production of over 37 t ha−1 year−1 over a period of 4 years. Irrigation and nitrogen level greatly affected Miscanthus biomass yield. In absence of N fertilization, irrigation did not modify biomass yield and the effect of irrigation increased with the increase in N level. The average N response ranged from 37 to 50 kg biomass kg−1 N applied. Because the calorific value of Miscanthus biomass (16.5 MJ kg−1) was not affected by irrigation and N fertilization, energy production depended exclusively on biomass yield. Maximum energy yield was 564 GJ ha−1 year−1. Without N supply and irrigation, energy yield was 291 GJ h−1. Net energy yield, calculated as the difference between energy output and input, but without inclusion of drying costs, was 543 GJ ha−1 with N fertilization and irrigation and 284 GJ ha−1 without; the ratios of energy output to input in crop production were 22 and 47, respectively.  相似文献

Grindelia chiloensis (Corn.) Cabr. is a shrub native to Patagonia, Argentina and can accumulate as much as 25% resin in its leaves, with net primary productivity between 90 and 170 g per year per plant when growing in native stands. Under cultivation, 67.4 g of resin per plant have been produced (about 2.24 Mg ha−1). The objective of this study was to assess the effect of irrigation regime on biomass and resin production on G. chiloensis. In order to achieve this objective, four irrigation treatments were performed during 1996–1997 and 1997–1998: (i) weekly irrigation (7d), (ii) irrigation at 20-day intervals (20d), (iii) irrigation at 40-day intervals (40d), (iv) non-irrigated (N-I). It was found that the intermittent water supply at 40d was sufficient to promote canopy development, and increase water use efficiency (WUE) and resin production per plant (RP) with highest resin production (approximately 5.12 Mg ha−1 in 1997). In order to achieve high levels of RP, above ground biomass was maximized at the expense of a reduction in WUE. A concomitant increase in WUE (at the leaf level; WUEL) and leaf resin content with water stress and time was found. This result supports the hypothesis that epicuticular resin could influence water transpiration (E), as it represents an additional barrier to gas diffusion from the epidermis and through the stomatal pores.  相似文献

The effects of differential irrigation and fertiliser treatments on the water use of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Desirée) were studied over 2 years in the hot dry climate of northeast Portugal. Total actual evapotranspiration (ETc) ranged from 150 to 320 mm in 1988, and from 190 to 550 mm in 1989 depending mainly on irrigation treatment, potential evaporation rates (ETp) and duration of the growing season. By comparison, the effects of nitrogen fertiliser on total water use were relatively small. Although nitrogen increased transpiration (larger leaf canopy), it reduced evaporation from the soil surface, in frequently irrigated plots, by similar amounts. As a result, in well-irrigated crops, the ETc/ETp ratio averaged 0.85 over the season, regardless of nitrogen level. Evaporation from the soil surface represented 15–25% of total water use by well-fertilised plants, but as much as 30–50% from the sparse stands of unfertilised crops. The proportion of water extracted from each depth increment of the silt-loam soil declined logarithmically, from the surface to 1.1 m depth, the maximum measured, for irrigated crops, and linearly when rain-fed. The ETc/ETp ratio fell below unity when 25–30% of the available water in the top metre had been depleted, equivalent to soil water deficits (SWDs) of 45–50 mm. By comparison, ETc declined to zero when 75–90% of the available water had been extracted, corresponding to actual deficits of 135–150 mm. Peak ETc rates reached 12–13 mm per day on days immediately following irrigation, nearly twice ETp (possibly due to the influence of advection) but then declined logarithmically with time to about 3 mm per day within 5 days. Using the same data, a companion paper reports the influence of climatic conditions on the yield responses to water of potato crops grown in the region.  相似文献

Cereal–legume intercropping plays an important role in subsistence food production in developing countries, especially in situations of limited water resources. Crop simulation can be used to assess risk for intercrop productivity over time and space. In this study, a simple model for intercropping was developed for cereal and legume growth and yield, under semi-arid conditions. The model is based on radiation interception and use, and incorporates a water stress factor. Total dry matter and yield are functions of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), the fraction of radiation intercepted and radiation use efficiency (RUE). One of two PAR sub-models was used to estimate PAR from solar radiation; either PAR is 50% of solar radiation or the ratio of PAR to solar radiation (PAR/SR) is a function of the clearness index (KT). The fraction of radiation intercepted was calculated either based on Beer's Law with crop extinction coefficients (K) from field experiments or from previous reports. RUE was calculated as a function of available soil water to a depth of 900 mm (ASW). Either the soil water balance method or the decay curve approach was used to determine ASW. Thus, two alternatives for each of three factors, i.e., PAR/SR, K and ASW, were considered, giving eight possible models (2 methods × 3 factors). The model calibration and validation were carried out with maize–bean intercropping systems using data collected in a semi-arid region (Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa) during seven growing seasons (1996/1997–2002/2003). The combination of PAR estimated from the clearness index, a crop extinction coefficient from the field experiment and the decay curve model gave the most reasonable and acceptable result. The intercrop model developed in this study is simple, so this modelling approach can be employed to develop other cereal–legume intercrop models for semi-arid regions.  相似文献

In Northern China, high-yielding aerobic rice varieties are released to farmers to grow rice as a supplementary-irrigated upland crop to cope with water scarcity. If the key factors contributing to the high yield of these varieties are understood, rapid advancements can be made in developing aerobic rice varieties for water-scarce environments in other parts of Asia. In 2001–2002, we conducted experiments with aerobic varieties HD502 and HD297 and lowland variety JD305 under aerobic and flooded conditions. Five irrigation treatments were implemented in aerobic soil to create different soil moisture regimes. Under flooded conditions, all three varieties had comparable radiation use (RUE) efficiencies of 2.09–2.26 g dry matter (DM) MJ−1 in 2001 and 2.40–2.53 g DM MJ−1 in 2002, and harvest indices (HI) of 0.38–0.40 in both years. Differences in yield among the varieties are explained by differences in growth duration. Under aerobic conditions, mean RUE over water treatments dropped to 1.70–1.72 g DM MJ−1 for all three varieties in 2001, and to 1.62 for HD502, 1.71 for HD297 and 1.86 for JD305 in 2002. With increasing dryness of the soil, the amount of intercepted light decreased at about the same rate for all varieties, but RUE decreased faster in the lowland than in the two aerobic varieties. The HI of JD305 decreased dramatically with increasing soil dryness and reached values of 0.19–0.21 in 2002. In contrast, the HI of both aerobic varieties remained relatively high under aerobic conditions, with lowest values of 0.27–0.28 for HD297 and 0.34–0.35 for HD502 in 2002. The relatively high HI of the aerobic varieties compensated for their relatively short growth duration so that their yields were higher than that of JD305 in all treatments. A high percentage filled grains is a key factor contributing to the high HI of the aerobic varieties under aerobic conditions.  相似文献

To improve efficiency of soil N and water use in the savanna, maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars with improved root systems are required. Two rainfed field experiments were conducted in Samaru, Nigeria in the 1993 and 1994 growing seasons with five maize cultivars under various rates of nitrogen fertilizer. The capacity of maize for rapid early root growth and to later develop a deep, dense root system was assessed. In addition, the effect of N fertilization on root growth of maize was studied in 1994. The widely cultivated cultivar TZB-SR had a poor root system in the surface soil layer and was more susceptible to early-season drought, as indicated by low plant vigor and aboveground dry matter yield during that time. It had a lower grain yield and a relatively small harvest index, but ranked among the highest in total aboveground dry matter production compared to other cultivars. The size of root system alone did not always relate well with grain yield among cultivars. Partitioning of dry matter within the plant was important in determining differences in grain yield and N stress tolerance between cultivars. A semiprolific cultivar (SPL) had high seedling vigour and a dense root system in the surface soil layer that conferred a greater tolerance to early-season drought stress and improved uptake of the early-season N flush, as indicated by a greater dry matter yield at 35 days after sowing (DAS). It also had a fine, deep, dense root system at flowering that could have improved water- and N-use efficiency in the subsoil (> 45 cm), thereby avoiding midseason drought stress in 1994. SPL had a large harvest index and the greatest yield among cultivars in 1994. Averaged across cultivars, greater root growth and distribution was observed at a moderate N rate of 0.56 g plant−1 than at zero-N or high N (2.26 g plant−1). Differences in root morphology could be valuable as selection criteria for N-efficient and drought-tolerant maize.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted at high- and low-S status sites in the 1998 and 1999 seasons to investigate the effect of sulphur application on the growth and metabolism of sugar beet. Application of sulphur (25 kg ha−1) resulted in a 25% increase in root yield together with significant increases in root and shoot dry matter accumulation at the low-S site only in the 1998 season. Beet quality was also increased through a reduction in α-amino N concentration. Crop S uptake was shown to be as much as 35 kg S ha−1 per year but with most S being returned to the soil removal of S is likely to be <15 kg ha−1 per year. The use of diagnostic plant indicators to predict sulphur deficiency in this crop was limited by the potential of the crop to access subsoil S through an extensive rooting depth. Application of sulphur to high-S status sites had no effect on the growth or metabolism of sugar beet.  相似文献

One of the main sources of considerable amounts of chloride to soils is irrigation water. The responses of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) to chloride are varied and inconsistent depending on the tobacco type, variety and methods of fertilization, cultivation and harvesting used. In this work, the impact of the interaction between four chloride levels (10, 20, 40, 80 mg L−1) in irrigation water and three nitrogen fertilizer forms (NO3–N 100%, NH4–N 100% and NO3–N 50%:NH4–N 50%) on growth, agronomic and chemical characteristics of Virginia tobacco was evaluated over 2 years (1999, 2000) in an outdoor pot experiment. The results showed that the adverse influence of chloride in irrigation water on plant height and number of leaves per plant was already substantial above 40 mg L−1, within 30 days after transplanting. In this period, visual toxicity symptoms of chloride appeared on the lower leaves of plants treated with ammonium nitrogen. In addition, the effect of chloride on flowering time, chlorophyll content of leaves, aboveground fresh weight of plant, total cured product yield and chemical characteristics, depended on the form of nitrogen, with nitrate nitrogen restricting the detrimental effects of chloride in irrigation water up to 40 mg L−1. The reduced yield of cured product at 80 mg L−1 was the result of the adverse effects of chloride on the leaves of the middle and upper stalk position. Leaf chloride concentration was highest in the upper leaves and increased linearly with the increase of chloride level in irrigation water at each leaf position on the stalk and this increase was more rapid as ammonium nitrogen percentage was increased. Chloride increased the concentration of reducing sugars in cured leaves at each leaf position, in all nitrogen forms and nicotine mainly in plants treated with nitrate nitrogen. The changes in total nitrogen and ash content are considered as minimal. We conclude that the optimum chloride level in irrigation water is below 20 mg L−1, whereas the level of 40 mg L−1 in combination with nitrate nitrogen fertilizers can be considered as the upper threshold to avoid adverse effects on Virginia tobacco.  相似文献

The use of Al-tolerant and P-efficient maize cultivars is an important component of a successful production system on tropical acid soils with limited lime and P inputs. Grain yield and secondary plant traits, including root and aboveground biomass, nutrient content and leaf development, were evaluated from 1996 to 2002 in field experiments on an Oxisol in order to identify maize characteristics useful in genetic improvement. Here we present the results of the 2002 trial and compare them with previous results. The aim of this experiment was to assess the effect of assimilate and nutrient partitioning on the growth and grain yield of two tropical cultivars having different Al tolerance (CMS36, tolerant, Spectral, moderately tolerant). The soil had an Al saturation of 36% in topsoil (pH 4.5) and >45% below 0.3 m depth (pH 4.2). Measurements made from emergence to grain filling included: root, stem and leaf biomass, P and N content, leaf area index (LAI), radiation use efficiency (RUE), soil available N and root profiles at anthesis. The experiments consisted of two P treatments, zero applied or 45 kg P ha−1 (−P and +P). All the treatments received N and K fertilizers. In −P, root biomass and LAI at anthesis were twice as great in CMS36 as in Spectral. In +P the differences between cultivars were negligible. Roots were deeper in CMS36 due to its higher Al tolerance. Total biomass and grain yield were not strongly related to root biomass and LAI. Other factors such as the leaf biomass and the amount of nutrients per unit leaf area were highly correlated with RUE and biomass. In −P, Spectral had the same total biomass but a higher grain yield than CMS36 (2.1 Mg ha−1 versus 1.5 Mg ha−1). This was due to a higher leaf P content (+40%), a greater RUE (+74%), and a lower number of sterile plants. In +P, CMS36 had higher total biomass and grain yield (4.1 Mg ha−1 versus 3.1 Mg ha−1). This was due to its higher leaf P (+25%) and leaf N (+43%) contents, and an increased RUE (+130%) that were associated with higher P and N uptake. Our results indicated that although root tolerance to Al toxicity is necessary for good crop performance on acid soils, assimilate and nutrient partitioning in the aboveground organs play a major role in plant adaptation and may partially compensate for a lower root tolerance.  相似文献

Rice is subjected to excessive waterlogging and flash-flooding on large areas in south and south-east Asia. Besides cultivars, submergence tolerance of plants is influenced by various agronomic practices. A field experiment was conducted at Cuttack, India during 1994–1995 to study the effect of method of stand establishment (direct seeding and transplanting), vigour of seed (low and high-density) or seedlings (N-fertilized and unfertilized), plant population (normal and 50% more) and N fertilizer (single basal and split application) on yield performance of lowland rice under conditions of natural submergence and simulated flash-flooding (impounding up to 90 ± 3 cm depth for 10 days at vegetative stage). Flooding reached a maximum depth of 80 cm in 1994 and 52 cm in 1995 under natural submergence. The crop performance was better in 1994 due to timely sowing in dry soil and delayed accumulation of water (43 days after sowing) than in 1995 when sowing was done late in saturated soil followed by early water accumulation (28 days after sowing). Grain yield of rice decreased by 30.0–33.6% due to simulated flash-flooding compared with natural submergence, and by 21.4–33.1% due to transplanting in July compared with direct seeding in May-end/early June. The yield of direct-sown crop increased by using high-density seed of 22.9–23.0 mg weight (5.2–9.0%), higher seed rate of 600 m−2 (2.2–2.3%) and basal fertilization at 40 kg N ha−1 (19.4–25.7%) compared with low-density seed (19.4–20.1 mg), 400 seed m−2 and no N, respectively. The yield of transplanted crop increased by using N-fertilized seedlings of 0.49–1.65 g weight (29.5–38.5%), higher number of seedlings at 155 m−2 (3.5–16.7%) and basal fertilization at 40 kg N ha−1 (31.9–32.5%) compared with unfertilized seedlings (0.19–0.79 g), 115 seedlings m−2 and no N. Split application of 40 kg N ha−1 — 50% each at basal and top dressing (105–115 days of growth after flash-flooding) — improved yield significantly (10.1–13.1%) over single basal application under simulated flash-flooding, but not under natural submergence conditions. Regression analysis indicated that relative contribution of various factors in increasing grain yield was in order: N fertilizer > seed density > seed m−2 in direct-sown rice, and N fertilizer > seedlings m−2 > seedling dry weight in transplanted rice. It was concluded that grain yield of flood-prone lowland rice can be increased by establishing the crop early through direct seeding using high-density seed and basal N fertilization.  相似文献

The potential rate of plant development and biomass accumulation under conditions free of environmental stress depends on the amount of radiation absorption and the efficiency of utilizing the absorbed solar energy to drive photosynthetic processes that produce biomass materials. Salinity, as a form of soil and water stress, generally has a detrimental effect on plant growth, and crops such as soybean are usually sensitive to salinity. Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine soybean growth characteristics and the relative impact of salinity on radiation absorption and radiation-use efficiency (RUE) at a whole plant level. Cumulative absorption of photosynthetically active radiation (∑APAR) was estimated using hourly inputs of predicted canopy extinction coefficients and measured leaf area indices (LAI) and global solar radiation. On 110 days after planting, soybean plants grown under non-saline conditions in the field accumulated 583 MJ ∑APAR m−2. A 20% reduction in ∑APAR resulted from growing the plants in soil with a solution electrical conductivity (EC) of about 10 dS m−1. Soybeans grown under non-saline conditions in the field achieved a RUE of 1.89 g MJ−1 ∑APAR for above-ground biomass dry materials. The RUE reached only 1.08 g MJ−1 ∑APAR in the saline soil, about a 40% reduction from the non-saline control. Salinity also significantly reduced ∑APAR and RUE for soybeans in the greenhouse. The observed smaller plant and leaf sizes and darker green leaves under salinity stress were attributed to reductions in LAI and increases in unit leaf chlorophyll, respectively. Reductions in LAI exceeded small gains in leaf chlorophyll, which resulted in less total canopy chlorophyll per unit ground area. Analyzing salinity effect on plant growth and biomass production using the relative importance of ∑APAR and RUE is potentially useful because APAR and total canopy chlorophyll can be estimated with remote sensing techniques.  相似文献

Yield, input use, productivity and profitability of irrigated rice systems were analyzed based on surveys in Senegal (Thiagar and Guédé), Mali (Office du Niger) and Burkina Faso (Kou Valley). The objective was to determine agronomic factors contributing to farmers' fertilizer-use efficiency and productivity, given current farmer practices. (A second paper addresses profitability and risk issues). Grain yields were highly variable, within and across sites. Minimum grain yield was 0.2 t ha−1 (Thiagar), maximum recorded grain yield was 8.7 t ha−1 (Office du Niger). The yield gap between actual farmers' yield and simulated potential or maximum attainable farmers' yield ranged from 0.6 to 5.7 t ha−1 (Kou), 1.8 to 8.2 t ha−1 (Thiagar), 0.3 to 6.3 t ha−1 (Office du Niger), 0.8 to 5.7 t ha−1 (Guédé), indicating considerable scope for improved yield. Physiological nitrogen efficiency (δ grain yield/δ N uptake) was mostly between 40 and 80 kg grain kg−1 plant N. Apparent recovery of fertilizer N was highly variable (average: 30–40% of applied N). Timing of N fertilizer application by farmers was extremely variable and often did not coincide with critical growth stages of the rice plant. Other agronomic constraints included: use of relatively old (>40 days) seedlings at transplanting (Kou, Office du Niger), P and/or K deficiency (Office du Niger), unreliable irrigation water supply (Kou, dry season), delayed start of the wet growing season resulting in yield losses of up to 20% due to cold-induced spikelet sterility (Kou, Guédé, Office du Niger), weed problems (Thiagar), and late harvesting (Thiagar). Discussions during meetings with farmers at the survey sites revealed that farmers lacked knowledge on (i) optimal timing, dosage and mode of fertilizer application, (ii) optimal sowing dates to avoid yield loss due to cold- or heat-induced sterility, and (iii) the importance of N as the main limiting factor to yield. Possibilities to achieve a sustainable increase in rice productivity and profitability in West African irrigation systems are discussed.  相似文献

Single irrigation, compared to the conventional four or five irrigations, has been practised in northern China on winter wheat on a relatively large scale since 1991. In a field study, irrigation was reduced from normally four times (I4, 4×75 mm) to one (I1, 75 mm at the end of the second internode elongation) in an area with an annual rainfall of about 600 mm. A control without irrigation (I0) was also included. Late sowing and early soil drying at seedling stage resulted in a relatively deep root system. Leaf area index, the size of upper leaves and the length of base internodes were also significantly reduced under I1, but kernel number per panicle was not reduced, suggesting that the development of inflorescence was not disrupted. During the active grain-filling stage, it was found that leaf water potential under I1 was maintained similar to that of I4, while daytime stomatal conductance was substantially reduced. Leaf temperature was increased, indicating an inhibited leaf transpiration. Early senescence was induced in I1 and I0 crops and resulted in a substantially lower kernel weight. Although the grain yield of I1 was reduced by about 15% from I4, the water-use efficiency (WUE) for total water consumption was increased by 24–30%. Single irrigation can potentially make wheat cropping sustainable in this area in terms of water usage and prevent further depletion of the underground water resource. Explanations for the small or zero reduction in yield are: (1) the encouraging development of a deep root system that enabled the plants to use more water at depth (below 1 m), which is recharged annually by the relatively high summer rainfall. (2) A large portion of root system in the drying soil and its induced shoot physiological changes, that is, reduced leaf expansion and stomatal conductance, which helped the plants to establish a better canopy structure with a much reduced water consumption. (3) An improved harvest index.  相似文献

The effect of irrigation with saline water on quality of Burley tobacco (cv. C 104) was investigated in Southern Italy over four consecutive years. A rainfed control (RC) was compared with treatments irrigated with volumes equal to crop evapotranspiration of saline waters at 0.5 (NW), 2.5 (SW1), 5 (SW2) and 10 (SW3) dS m−1 electrical conductivity (ECw). In 2000 and 2001 an additional salinity treatment (15 dS m−1 ECw) was included (SW4). The amounts of Cl added to the soil by irrigation ranged from 36.3 kg ha−1 (good quality water in 1999) to 16.2 Mg ha−1 (saline water at 15 dS m−1 ECw in 2000). Saline irrigation did not affect yield and yield components of cured leaves. In 1998 and 1999 the filling power of Burley tobacco did not change significantly with increasing salinity of the irrigation water. In 2000 and 2001 the filling power of SW2, SW3 and SW4 treatments was significantly less than that of NW. The Cl content of tobacco grown with SW2 was significantly greater than that grown with NW and there were no differences between SW1 through SW4 treatments. The filling power and the leaf Cl content were inversely related to the amount of Cl applied in the range between 40.3 kg ha−1 and 5.1 Mg ha−1. The filling power decreased and Cl increased up to the SW2 treatment; beyond that level neither Cl nor filling power changed in response to increasing amounts of Cl applied. The leaf alkaloid content was unaffected by salinity. Total N was unaffected by either the growing season or the saline treatments. Cigarettes obtained from saline treatments did not burn during the smoking test in 1998. In 1999 cigarettes made from SW1 and SW2 did burn, but those from SW3 did not. In 2000 and 2001 the smoking test was performed only on commercial blends containing 10 or 30% of cut tobacco from saline treatments and both blends burned similarly to cigarettes made entirely from tobacco grown under non-saline conditions. In conclusion, quality of Burley tobacco was unaffected by irrigation with saline water at 2.5 dS m−1 and the inhibitory effect of salinity on burning properties could be overcome by appropriate mixture in commercial blends.  相似文献

Soil moisture and soil temperature affect pre-harvest infection with Aspergillus flavus and production of aflatoxin. The objectives of our field research in Niger, West Africa, were to: (i) examine the effects of sowing date and irrigation treatments on pod yield, infection with A. flavus and aflatoxin concentration; and (ii) to quantify relations between infection, aflatoxin concentration and soil moisture stress. Seed of an aflatoxin susceptible peanut cv. JL24 was sown at two to four different sowing dates under four irrigation treatments (rainfed and irrigation at 7, 14 and 21 days intervals) between 1991 and 1994, giving 40 different ‘environments’. Average air and soil temperatures of 28–34 °C were favourable for aflatoxin contamination. CROPGRO-peanut model was used to simulate the occurrence of moisture stress. The model was able to simulate yields of peanut well over the 40 environments (r2 = 0.67). In general, early sowing produced greater pod yields, as well as less infection and lower aflatoxin concentration. There were negative linear relations between infection (r2 = 0.62) and the average simulated fraction of extractable soil water (FESW) between flowering and harvest, and between aflatoxin concentration (r2 = 0.54) and FESW in the last 25 days of pod-filling. This field study confirms that infection and aflatoxin concentration in peanut can be related to the occurrence of soil moisture stress during pod-filling when soil temperatures are near optimal for A. flavus. These relations could form the basis of a decision-support system to predict the risk of aflatoxin contamination in peanuts in similar environments.  相似文献

Deceleration in rice (Oryza sativa L.) yield over time under fixed management conditions is a concern for countries like Bangladesh, where rice is the primary source of calories for the human population. Field experiments were conducted from 1990 to 1999 on a Chhiata clay loam soil (Hyperthermic Vertic Endoaquept) in Bangladesh, to determine the effect of different doses of chemical fertilizers alone or in combination with cow dung (CD) and rice husk ash (ash) on yield of lowland rice. Two rice crops—dry season rice (December–May) and wet season rice (July–November) were grown in each year. Six treatments—absolute control (T1), one-third of recommended fertilizer doses (T2), two-thirds of recommended fertilizer doses (T3), full doses of recommended fertilizers (T4), T2+5 t CD and 2.5 t ash ha−1 (T5) and T3+5 t CD and 2.5 t ash ha−1 (T6) were compared. The CD and ash were applied on dry season rice only. The 10-year mean grain yield of rice with T1 was 5.33 t ha−1 per year, while the yield with T2 was 6.86 t ha−1 per year. Increased fertilizer doses with T3 increased the grain yield to 8.07 t ha−1 per year, while the application of recommended chemical fertilizer doses (T4) gave 8.87 t ha−1 per year. The application of CD and ash (T5 and T6) increased rice yield by about 1 t ha−1 per year over that obtained with chemical fertilizer alone (T2 and T3, respectively). Over 10 years, the grain yield trend with the control plots was negative, but not significantly, both in the dry and wet seasons. Under T3 through T6, the yield trend was significantly positive in the dry season, but no significant trend was observed in the wet season. The treatments, which showed positive yield trend, also showed positive total P uptake trend. Positive yield trends were attributed to the increasing P supplying power of the soil.  相似文献
