The number of circulating erythrocytes was monitored in two strains of brown trout during the spawning season. Erythrocyte numbers were significantly elevated in mature male fish of both strains compared with mature females or immature fish. This period of erythrocytosis coincided with elevated plasma 11-ketotestosterone levels in mature male fish, was out of phase with the testosterone peak in males and was not observed in females despite high levels of plasma testosterone. The results are discussed with reference to the control of erythropoiesis in higher vertebrates.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in plasma levels of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) in precociously maturing amago salmon (Oncorhynchus masou ishikawai), which matured as 1-year-olds, have been investigated. Profiles of plasma IGF-I levels were compared with changes in growth and maturity, and plasma growth hormone (GH) and thyroxine (T4) concentrations. The maturity of the fish was determined by calculating the gonadosomatic index; in November, 100% of males and 89% females matured. In both males and females, plasma IGF-I levels increased from March to August, and subsequently, plasma IGF-I levels in the early maturing males and females declined gradually and were maintained at lower levels during the spawning period in November. Plasma GH levels were high in April, and then declined gradually through September. Thereafter, in early maturing fish, a slight increase in plasma GH levels was observed in October and November. No significant changes in plasma T4 levels were found in the precociously maturing fish. In sharp contrast, plasma IGF-I levels in immature fish remained elevated through September, reaching a peak in October, and then gradually declined in November. In immature females, plasma T4 and GH levels were elevated in August, reached their maximum in September and then gradually declined until November.  相似文献

Reproduction related immunoglobulin changes in rainbow trout   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:4
Annual changes in plasma immunoglobulin (IgM) levels were investigated in three strains of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss which have different spawning periods, i.e., September–October, November–December, and January, reared under constant water temperature and natural day length. Plasma IgM levels decreased during the spawning season in all strains tested. The IgM changes became reversed in response to significant increases in plasma testosterone (T) and estradiol-17 in females and T and 11-ketotestosterone in males. Though the IgM decline showed a connection with suppressed immunocompetence, since many mature fish caught fungal diseases, no clear differences were observed in the plasma IgM levels between infected and noninfected fish during the spawning season. Incidentally, plasma IgM levels in infection prone fish were higher than in noninfection prone fish prior to the spawning season, whereas coincident differences in the plasma steroid levels were observed. Immature fish reared under lower water temperatures showed lower IgM levels. The effect of water temperature may have to be considered when analyzing the defense mechanism during the spawning season in rainbow trout.  相似文献

Changes occurring during sexual maturation of farmed Atlantic salmon were investigated. Fifteen immature and maturing fish were sampled every fourth week from April to December. The skin colour and other external changes were registered, and the chemical composition of the fillets was analysed and the meat quality evaluated. The maturing females lost weight beginning in July, and the maturing males had a reduced weight gain during maturation. The external sexual characteristics appeared as early as May. Changes in the skin colour of maturing fish took place in July/August. From June to December, the fat content of the fillets decreased from about 12% to 5%; the protein content decreased from about 22% to 19%; and the water content increased from about 66% to 74%. In the same period, the weight of the viscera decreased from about 6% to 2–3% of the ungutted body weight. The red colour of the fillets decreased from August onwards. In October, significant differences in the chemical composition of the fillets of maturing and immature fish coincided with marked sensory differences. These differences increased later on. The odour and flavour became much less pronounced, and the texture became watery and tough. It is concluded that in the later stages of maturation, the quality of the meat deteriorates.  相似文献

This study documents early out-of-season induced spawning of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus. During the early spring (February–April) of 1999, 2000 and 2001, ponds containing (1) male and female channel catfish (mixed-sex ponds) or (2) male channel and blue catfish I. furcatus only, or female channel catfish only (single-sex ponds) were heated to 24–30°C to encourage gonadal maturation and spawning. Unheated ponds were stocked with males and females and were monitored during the duration of heating. When natural spawning occurred in the heated ponds, the fish were captured by seining and unspawned females were injected with 100 μg kg−1 of synthetic leutenizing hormone-releasing hormone. Injected females were either paired with males or held in communal all-female groups, and monitored for ovulation. Eggs were collected and fertilized with sperm of channel catfish or blue catfish. Females paired with males were induced to spawn 44 days (mixed-sex ponds) and 50 days (single-sex ponds) before natural spawning occurred in unheated ponds. Spawning latency (the time between injection and ovulation) and the percentage of neurulated embryos from eggs fertilized using channel catfish sperm was not different between spawning before the natural season (P=0.68) and during the natural season in fish from mixed-sex ponds (P=0.57). Females held in all-female groups produced eggs 34 days before the onset of spawning in unheated ponds. Spawning latency was not different between spawns before and during the natural season (P=0.16), and the percentages of neurulated embryos from eggs fertilized with channel catfish sperm (P=0.76) or blue catfish sperm (P=0.77) before or during the natural season were not different. This study demonstrates the feasibility of conditioning of channel catfish females for early out-of-season induced spawning in the laboratory.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in growth and maturation of individually tagged turbot (n= 421), Scophthalmus maximus Rafinesque, was studied in a long-lasting (20 months) growth experiment with four temperature regimes. The influence of onset of puberty and subsequent maturation on growth was evaluated. There were no initial size differences, but the final weight of females was larger than that of males at all temperature regimes, except at the lowest temperature. Surplus energy (sum of increase in somatic weight and gonad weight) in females was on average greater than in males from 8 months prior to first spawning. Significant growth (as specific growth rate, SGR) differences between maturing and immature fish were detected from the age of 9 months post hatch. Maturing females had the highest growth rate and reached the largest size (1.8 kg in 20 months), whereas male body weights reached a plateau and levelled off around 1.0 kg. To optimize production characteristics in turbot aquaculture and achieve more homogeneous growth, methods should be developed to produce all-female broods.  相似文献

Adult red sea bream, Pagrus major (body weight, 1.0–2.0 kg) was exposed to three photoperiods [12 h light:12 h dark (12L:12D), 16 h light:8 h dark (16L:8D) and 24 h light:0 h dark (24L:0D)] from 2 months before spawning till the end of the spawning season to investigate growth, spawning and stress response. During the spawning season, tanks were checked every morning for spawned eggs. The growth performance in fish under 24L:0D was stimulated with significantly higher feed intake than those under other photoperiods (P<0.05). The number of eggs and gonadal histology confirmed that three and five females out of six in each of duplicate tanks of the 16L:8D treatment spawned. In contrast, only two out of six females in one tank of the 24L:0D treatment spawned, and no spawns were observed in the 12L:12D treatment. At the end of the spawning period, both 17β‐estradiol and testosterone levels were significantly higher in fish exposed to 16L:8D followed by 12L:12D and 24L:0D photoperiods (P<0.05). Photoperiod manipulation did not cause significant stress response in fish (P>0.05). The results suggest that stimulating the growth performance of red sea bream at reproductive stage with a 24L:0D photoperiod is possible if the fish are subjected to this photoperiod long before the onset of the spawning season.  相似文献

Climate change is occurring rapidly in the Arctic, and an improved understanding of the response of aquatic biota and ecosystems will be important for this data-limited region. Here, we applied biochronology techniques and mixed-effects modelling to assess relationships among growth increments found on lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) otoliths (N = 49) captured from 13 lakes on the Arctic Coastal Plain of northern Alaska, observed and modelled climate patterns, and individual-level fish and lake characteristics. We found that annual growth varied by year, fish growth slowed significantly as individuals aged, and females grew faster than males. Lake trout had higher growth in flow-through lakes relative to lakes that were perennially or seasonally connected. Annual growth was positively correlated with observed air temperature measurements from a local weather station for the period 1998–2014, but no clear warming trend was evident for this period. Modelled August air temperatures from 1978–2014 predicted lake trout annual growth (root mean squared error = 0.045 mm) and indicated increasing temperatures and annual lake trout growth over the period 1950–2014. This study demonstrated that biochronology techniques can reconstruct recent climate patterns and provide a better understanding of trends in Arctic lake ecosystems under a changing climate.  相似文献

Three‐summers‐old all‐female triploid and diploid rainbow trout were compared after one on‐growing season in sea net cages. Slaughter traits of round weight, gutted weight, fillet weight, carcass% and fillet% were measured at three times in November 2017, January and April 2018. The triploid group had lower daily growth coefficient mean (4.25) and higher feed conversion ratio (1.18) than diploids (4.48 and 1.05, respectively) during on‐growing (June–November). In November, no difference of means was found between mature or immature diploids and triploids for any of the weight traits when the effect of vertebrae defects was statistically removed. However, the triploids had attained higher means than mature or immature diploids in gutted and fillet weight by January, suggesting that the loss of muscle mass during early winter was lower in triploids. Sexually maturing diploids (46%) had lower slaughter yield means compared to triploids or immature diploids at each measurement time, and these differences also increased during overwintering. Instead, the means of yield traits remained similar between the triploid and immature diploid groups through the winter. Likewise, fillet redness remained at equally high level in triploids and immature diploids, whereas in maturing diploids this attribute decreased substantially during overwintering. The triploid group had a higher incidence of vertebral defects (12.0%) than diploids (5.3%). The present results demonstrate the potential of triploid trout in producing large‐sized (>2 kg) fillet fish until spring markets. However, more detailed investigations are needed, particularly regarding the animal health and growth efficiency in triploids, relative to their diploid counterparts.  相似文献

The white croaker, Pennahia argentata (Houttuyn), is abundant in demersal fish assemblages in Ariake Sound and is a commercially important species. The reproductive biology of white croaker was studied by measurement of gonadosomatic indices (GSI) and histological examination of ovaries. Ovaries were classified into one of five maturity stages based on histological data: (1) immature/resting stage; (2) developing stage; (3) maturing stage; (4) ripe/spawning stage; (5) spent stage. The spawning season lasts from April to September but most activity is observed from May to August. Age at sexual maturity was assumed to be 1 year. Postovulatory follicles coexisted with yolk stage oocytes in histological sections of ovaries indicating that white croaker is a multiple spawner, spawning more than once in a single spawning season. Judging from the diel changes in the proportion of females with ovaries containing postovulatory follicles and oocytes at maturation stage, most females spawned in the evening between 19:00 and 21:30 h.  相似文献

Smolting and maturation of 2+ brown trout Salmo trutta L. were evaluated after exposing the groups of trout to different feeding regimes during the summers at 0+ and 1+ ages. The hypothesis tested was based on the theory of smolting of a congeneric species, Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L., in which the physiological smolting decision is expected to be taken at the end of July or beginning of August. During the first summer, the growth of the trout was restricted in two groups out of four by low feeding frequency. During the second summer, food was totally withheld for 3 weeks in June–July (i.e. before the expected sensitive period), in August or not at all (control). The proportion of sexually mature males in November was 5.2% in the groups fasted during August, but somewhat lower in the groups fasted in June–July (average 2.3%) or in control fish (3%). The tendency for smolting was evaluated during the following spring in an artificial stream with the help of PIT-tag technology, which allowed monitoring of the movements of individually tagged trout. Seawater challenge tests were also carried out in April and June. Differences in osmoregulatory ability in seawater indicated that feeding treatments had a slight effect on the timing of smolting, but no differences were observed in movement behaviour between treatment groups. Mature and maturing males moved less at the peak migration time (mid-May) but more in October than immature fishes. These results suggest that the smolting decision in brown trout may be taken at a different time than in Atlantic salmon and that periodic poor growth conditions during the summer will not prevent smolting of trout during the following spring.  相似文献

Oral administration of 17β-oestradiol at 20 mg/kg diet for a period from 0 to 60 days following “swim-up” resulted in the sex reversal of male brook trout and the production of essentially all-female populations. The gonads of these animals were indistinguishable from the ovaries of untreated fish.Oral administration of this hormone at the same concentration but for the period from 0 to 40 days resulted in a population which comprised 67% females, 21% males and 12% bisexual animals.Within the control group, the growth rate of males was significantly greater than that of females. Growth in the all-female stocks produced by dietary oestradiol administration (0–60 days) was significantly lower than that of the untreated population taken as a whole but was identical to that of the control females. The growth of brook trout during the first year was closely comparable to that of rainbow trout reared under identical conditions. During the second year, the growth of the rainbow trout exceeded that of the brook trout. At 19 months of age, all the animals in the control and oestradiol treated brook trout populations were fully mature; maturity in the rainbow trout was substantially confined to males.  相似文献

Northern Lake Huron (Ontario, Canada) supports the largest concentration of freshwater salmonid cage culture farms in Canada and receives inputs of domestic‐strain rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) through escapement. We assessed the potential effects of these domestic fish on the naturalised rainbow trout of this ecosystem by comparing their respective ecologies. Mature adults were sampled from spawning tributaries, primarily in spring, and to a lesser extent in fall. Fish of domestic origin comprised ~80% of rainbow trout sampled from sites near cage culture facilities but <20% of rainbow trout sampled from more distant sites. Domestic adults in spawning condition (gametes free‐flowing) were present in the spawning tributaries in both spring and fall sampling seasons, whereas naturalised fish in spawning condition were only observed in the spring. Domestic adults were younger and smaller (in length), appeared to have shorter lifespan and had a higher male to female ratio compared with their naturalised counterparts. Growth rates (change in length with age) of naturalised and domestic females in the wild were similar, but domestic males grew more slowly than naturalised males. Domestic females also produced smaller eggs than naturalised females. Food web positions (inferred from δ13C and δ15N) of domestic and naturalised fish were very similar but varied more strongly with body size in the former. Domestic‐strain rainbow trout of cage culture origin can survive, grow and attempt to spawn in northern Lake Huron and have the potential to compete for food, mates and spawning habitat with naturalised rainbow trout.  相似文献

Age at maturity and dynamics of gonadal cycle vary among individuals in a standard population; the extent of that variability in a group of siblings is not known for any species. Therefore, the aim of the study was to find out how the differentiation of gonad development varies in a group of sibling fish. The study involved 176 seven-month-old sea trout parr (mean fork length of 11 cm) collected at a single time point during their first spawning season (late October) from the brook of Pniewa in Western Pomerania (Poland). Gonad maturation was determined from histological analysis which was interpreted according to specially developed criteria.

The stage and forms of gonad maturation were diverse in the sibling group studied. Gonads of 52.8% males were not maturing (Class I), with only spermatogonia A present. The remaining males (47.2%) had gonads differing widely in the development, from beginning of maturation to completion of the reproductive cycle (Classes from II to VIII). In addition to the classes described, some males were observed to feature attempted maturation. It is difficult to provide an unequivocal estimate of the proportion of precocious males (mature at a young age, prior to the first descent to the sea) in the first year of life because of difficulties in categorizing males in Class II. It was predicted that 32.4% of the population would complete the cycle during the first spawning season. The body length and weight of the maturing males was significantly smaller (P < 0.05) than that of the non-maturing males.

Three forms of gonad maturation were identified. Gonads of a large group of precocious males (70%) developed incompletely (only some germ cell developed during the reproductive cycle), some of those gonads assumed the form of attempted maturation and partial maturation. Testes of the remaining 30% of the males underwent complete maturation. Gonads that undergo attempted maturation do not spermiate.

It is only from microscope-aided analysis of the testes that the class of gonad development can be accurately evaluated and the extent of precocious maturation assessed, particularly in fish maturing for the first time. It is impossible to correctly identify maturing males of the underyearling sea trout on the basis of morphological examination of gonad appearance, abdominal massage to detect spermiation or gonadosomatic index value.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Behavioral experiments concerning a releaser pheromone in the urine of female rainbow trout were performed using immature fish administered orally with 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) during the non-spawning season. The urine was collected by catheter. The frequency of entries of test fish was recorded in each channel scented by test and control solutions in a Y-maze trough. The behavior of both MT-treated and control fish demonstrated that they could not discriminate the differences between distilled and environmental water as control solutions. There was also no difference between MT-treated and control fish when distilled and environmental water were introduced. The MT-treated immature fish were attracted to the channel scented by ovulated female urine. Neither coelomic fluid nor the immature female urine had any effect on the behavioral responses of MT-treated fish, while immature control fish had no preference for the urine of ovulated females. These results suggest in rainbow trout that ovulated female urine contains a releaser pheromone to attract mature males, and that androgens are involved in the sensory mechanisms detecting the releaser pheromone in fish.  相似文献

The interspecific hybridization of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, females with blue catfish, I. furcatus, males has been identified as a method to further improve production; however, lack of spawning success has affected its commercial application. To facilitate our understanding of the interaction of brood stock nutrition and reproductive performance, we evaluated the interaction of feed quality and feeding frequency. Channel catfish females were classified into two genetic groups, namely, high and low spawning. The treatments were offered during the spring season 70–90 d prior to the start of the spawning season. Induced reproduction was performed using luteinizing hormone releasing hormone analog. Condition of the fish as well as reproductive performance using spawning success, egg production, egg size, and fertilization at 48 h were determined. Changing protein level of the diet from 32 to 42% did not influence spawning, fecundity, or fertilization, but affected egg size and biochemical composition of the eggs. Increasing the feeding frequency from three to six times per week negatively affected spawning in one of the two genetics groups, did not affect egg production and egg fertilization, but had a significant effect on egg size. Older fish performed better than younger fish in terms of spawning success and egg production.  相似文献

Abstract  The spawning behaviour of adult sea trout, Salmo trutta L., was studied using 174 MHz radio transmitters inserted into the stomachs. Sea trout were captured near the spawning beds and tracked prior to, during and after spawning. Ascent into the spawning river was shown to be linked to increases in flow for some fish but not others; the latter fish tended to move at night. Female sea trout were shown to spawn over 1–3 days, with preference for spawning during darkness, before leaving rapidly as kelts. Size was shown to be important in determining dominance among males, with up to 10 males accompanying one female. Males were shown to spawn with more than one female, and to leave and re-enter the river on a number of occasions.  相似文献

This paper describes the effect of triploidy on growth and reproductive endocrinology in the months leading up to and including spawning in rainbow trout,Salmo gairdneri, and pink salmon,Oncorhynchus gorbuscha. Growth rates were the same for diploid and triploid rainbow trout, but triploid female pink salmon were smaller than maturing diploid females and diploid and triploid males of the same age. Triploid males of both species developed typical secondary sexual characteristics and had normal endocrine profiles, although their cycle appeared to be delayed by about one month. Triploid females remained silvery in appearance and showed no endocrine signs of maturation, even at the level of the pituitary. Thus, although triploids of both sexes are genetically sterile, only the females do not undergo physiological maturation.Reported in part at the Third International Symposium on Reproductive Physiology of Fish, St. John's, Newfoundland, August 2–7, 1987.  相似文献

A direct non‐parametric method was used to calculate reference (physiological) haematology values for farmed 10–12‐month rainbow trout of the Kamloops strain (mean weight: 330±131 g) with respect to red blood cell counts (RBCc), haematocrit values (Hct), haemoglobin concentrations (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentrations (MCHC). The fish in the selected reference group (n=798) were given dry pelleted diets that contained 37–47% crude protein, 7–18% crude fat and 108–300‐mg vitamin E, 1.08–5‐mg folic acid, 0.018–0.05‐mg vitamin B12, 48–64.5‐mg iron, 4.5–8.4‐mg copper and 0.18–0.24‐mg selenium supplied per kg of diet. Ethoxyquin and butylhydroxytoluol were used to protect the fat component against oxidation. The fish were kept at a stocking density of 50kg per cubic metre in tanks provided with running freshwater (dissolved oxygen 8.4–11.5 mg L?1, with O2 saturation of 77–98%) at an ambient temperature of 0.2–16°C. Blood was sampled between September and November at a photoperiod of 9–13 h:11–15 h (light:dark). Reference ranges for the preceding haematological indices were as follows in immature females (males): RBCc, 0.77–1.42T L?1 (T – tera, 1012) (0.98–1.55T L?1); Hct, 0.304–0.502 (0.34–0.546); Hb, 54–93 g L?1 (59–97 g L?1); MCV, 282–469 fL (279–434 fL); MCH, 51–86 pg (47–78 pg); MCHC, 0.15–0.22 (0.15–0.2). In males, values for RBCc, Hct and Hb were significantly higher (P=0.01 and 0.0000 respectively) and those for MCV, MCH and MCHC were significantly lower (P=0.01 and 0.0002 respectively) than in immature females. Nutritional and environmental factors affecting erythropoiesis in trout and some correlations between haematological (RBCc, Hb, Hct) and biochemical indices of the blood plasma (total protein, cholesterol) are discussed.  相似文献

This study investigated the in vivo and in vitro effects of Rhizopus (filamentous fungus) extract (RU) in masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou Brevoort. Underyearling fish were fed with RU for 16 months. Monthly changes in body growth, gonadal maturation and serum levels of sex steroids were monitored. Gonads were also incubated at 0, 1, 10, 100 and 1000 μg RU mL−1 Leibovitz's L‐15 medium for 18 h. The levels of steroids in serum and cultured medium were measured. It was determined that RU‐fed immature and mature males, when compared with control groups, showed significantly higher body growth during spring, summer and the spawning period. Similarly, immature RU‐fed females showed significantly higher fork length and body weight in autumn, spring and summer. Furthermore, RU‐fed males showed significantly higher levels of serum testosterone (T) and 11‐ketotestosterone (11‐KT) levels in the pre‐spawning season, and 17α, 20β‐dihydroxy‐4‐pregnen‐3‐one (DHP) in the spawning season. In vitro RU incubation of gonads showed a dose‐dependent and significant increase in T, 11‐KT, oestradiol‐17β and DHP release in the medium. It appears that the causes of enhanced body growth and increased steroid production herein observed in salmonids are the physiologically active substances that may be present in the mycelium of the fungus.  相似文献
