Context

Resilience in fire-prone forests is strongly affected by landscape burn-severity patterns, in part by governing propagule availability around stand-replacing patches in which all or most vegetation is killed. However, little is known about drivers of landscape patterns of stand-replacing fire, or whether such patterns are changing during an era of increased wildfire activity.

Objectives

(a) Identify key direct/indirect drivers of landscape patterns of stand-replacing fire (e.g., size, shape of patches), (b) test for temporal trends in these patterns, and (c) anticipate thresholds beyond which landscape patterns of burn severity may change fundamentally.

Methods

We applied structural equation modeling to satellite burn-severity maps of fires in the US Northern Rocky Mountains (1984–2010) to test for direct and indirect (via influence on fire size and proportion stand-replacing) effects of climate/weather, vegetation, and topography on landscape patterns of stand-replacing fire. We also tested for temporal trends in landscape patterns.

Results

Landscape patterns of stand-replacing fire were strongly controlled by fire size and proportion stand-replacing, which were, in turn, controlled by climate/weather and vegetation/topography, respectively. From 1984 to 2010, the proportion of stand-replacing fire within burn perimeters increased from 0.22 to 0.27. Trends for other landscape metrics were not significant, but may respond to further increases proportion stand-replacing fire.

Conclusions

Fires from 1984 to 2010 exhibited tremendous heterogeneity in landscape patterns of stand-replacing fire, likely promoting resilience in burned areas. If trends continue on the current trajectory, however, fires may produce larger and simpler shaped patches of stand-replacing fire with more burned area far from seed sources.

Two ecological models have been put forward to explain the dynamics of fire-promoting and fire-sensitive vegetation in southwest Tasmania: the alternative stable states model of Jackson (in Proc Ecol Soc Aust 3:9–16, 1968) and the sharpening switch model of Mount (in Search 10:180–186, 1979). Assessing the efficacy of these models requires high resolution spatio-temporal data on whether vegetation patterns are stable or dynamic across landscapes. We analysed ortho-rectified sequences of aerial photography and satellite imagery from 1948, 1988 and 2010 to detect decadal scale changes in forest and non-forest vegetation cover in southwest Tasmania. There was negligible change from forest to non-forest (<0.05%) and only a modest change from non-forest to forest over the study period. Forest cover increased by 4.1% between 1948 and 1988, apparently due to the recovery of forest vegetation following stand-replacing fire prior to 1948. Forest cover increased by 0.8% between 1988 and 2010, reflecting the limited ability of forest to invade treeless areas. The two models include interactions between vegetation, fire and soil, which we investigated by analysing the chemical (phosphorus, nitrogen) and physical properties (clay, silt) of 128 soil samples collected across 34 forest–non-forest boundaries. Phosphorus in the upper horizon was typically lower in non-forest vegetation compared to forest vegetation, which is consistent with proposed fire–vegetation–soil feedbacks. Mineral horizons were dominated by sand, with low levels of clay under all vegetation types. Available field evidence lends support to the Jackson (1968) alternative stable states model as the most suitable model of vegetation dynamics on nutrient poor substrates in southwest Tasmania although modifications of the timeframes for transitions toward rainforest are required.  相似文献

In Central Europe vast wetland areas have been converted into agricultural land over the past few centuries. Long-term spatially explicit reconstructions of wetland cover changes at regional scale are rare but such information is vital for setting appropriate wetland conservation and restoration goals. In this study wetland cover change over the past 150 years was analyzed for the Canton Zurich (Switzerland) using information from historical and current topographical maps. Mapping instructions changed significantly over time, i.e., wetlands were mapped more conservatively on older maps. Therefore a technique was developed to account for changes in mapping instructions and to reconstruct a series of comparable maps spanning 1850–2000. Wetland cover dramatically decreased from 13,759 ha in 1850 (more than 8% of the total study area) to 1,233 ha in 2000 (less than 1%). Largest loss is observed for the first half of the twentieth century when more than 50% of the total wetland loss occurred. In 1850, almost all wetland patches were connected in two large networks defined by a 500 m buffer around all wetland patches to account for typical dispersal distances of wetland animals. Despite extensive wetland loss, this networks remained largely intact until 1950, but then collapsed into many medium and small networks consisting of only few wetland patches. In addition to the direct loss of wetland habitats increased habitat fragmentation is limiting metapopulation dynamics and hindering genetic exchange between populations. Amphibians and other wetland animals are particularly prone to habitat fragmentation because of their limited migration abilities. This may lead to time-delayed extinction in the future because current species occurrence might rather reflect historical than current wetland cover and habitat configuration. Future restoration efforts should focus on reestablishing connectivity between remaining smaller wetland networks.  相似文献

There are sporadic reports on urban forests in Indian cities. Nagpur is one of the greenest cities of India with 18 per cent of its area under forests and plantations, 17 per cent under cultivation and 2 per cent under water bodies. The present study showed that natural vegetation of the city is very well diversified with a representation of 59 per cent vegetation including 124 trees species belonging to 38 families as compared with the overall district vegetation statistics. Air quality in the city is relatively better with lower SO2 (6 μg/m3), NO2 (18 μg/m3) and Respirable Suspended Particulate Matters (RSPM, 53 μg/m3) as against National Ambient Air Quality Standards (2009) for cities in India of 80, 80 and 100 μg/m3, respectively. It was also noted that the diversity in natural forests which are being protected is greater than the plantations undertaken by the civic authorities and private sector efforts. The study thus demonstrated the positive relationship of the city with diversified vegetation cover for cleaner environment. The analysis is expected to guide formulation of strategies for maintaining green space in the city.  相似文献

AIM: To observe the role of zipper-interacting protein kinase (ZIPK) in the regulatory effects of protein kinase Cα (PKCα) and protein kinase Cε (PKCε) on calcium sensitivity during hemorrhagic shock(HS) in rats. METHODS: The skinned first class arborization of superior mesenteric artery (SMA) from HS rats were adopted to observe the influence of inhibitor of ZIPK on the effects of PKCα and PKCε agonists on calcium sensitivity after shock via measuring the contraction initiated by Ca2+ with isolated organ perfusion system, hypoxic vascualr smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) were adopted to measure the protein expression and activity of ZIPK after applying PKCα and PKCε agonists following hypoxia via Western blotting. RESULTS: (1) The calcium sensitivity of SMA was decreased after 2 h shock, and increased by agonists of PKCα and PKCε. Emax of Ca2+ was increased from 47.2%to 66.5% (P<0.01) and 66.3% (P<0.01) of normal control respectively as compared with 2 h shock group. The increasing effects of PKCα and PKCε agonists on calcium sensitivity of SMA after 2 h shock were weakened by the inhibitor of ZIPK. The cumulative dose-response curve of Ca2+ was shifted to the right, the Emax of Ca2+ was decreased to 42.6% and 47.5% of normal control (P<0.01), respectively. (2) The protein expression and activity of ZIPK in VSMCs were decreased after 2 h hypoxia, and were increased by the agonists of PKCα and PKCε following 2 h hypoxia. CONCLUSION: PKCα and PKCε regulate the calcium sensitization probably through changing the protein expression and activity of ZIPK following HS in rats.  相似文献

Context

Although logging has affected circumboreal forest dynamics for nearly a century, very few studies have reconstructed its influence on landscape structure at the subcontinental scale.

Objectives

This study aims to document spatiotemporal patterns of logging and fire since the introduction of logging in the early twentieth-century, and to evaluate the effects of these disturbances on landscape structure.

Methods

We used historical (1940–2009) logging and fire maps to document disturbance patterns across a 195,000-km2 boreal forest landscape of eastern Canada. We produced multitemporal (1970s–2010s) mosaics providing land cover status using Landsat imagery.

Results

Logging significantly increased the rate of disturbance (+74 %) in the study area. The area affected by logging increased linearly with time resulting in a significant rejuvenation of the landscape along the harvesting pattern (south–north progression). From 1940 to 2009, fire was the dominant disturbance and showed a more random spatial distribution than logging. The recent increase of fire influence and the expansion of the proportion of area classified as unproductive terrestrial land suggest that regeneration failures occurred.

Conclusions

This study reveals how logging has modified the disturbances dynamics, following the progression of the logging frontier. Future management practices should aim for a dispersed spatial distribution of harvests to generate landscape structures that are closer to natural conditions, in line with ecosystem-based management. The challenges of defining sustainable practices will remain complex with the predicted increase in fire frequency, since this factor, in combination with logging, can alter both the structure and potentially the resilience of boreal forest.

Our objective was to study the differentially expressed proteins (DEP) in various Malus spectabilis (crabapple) varieties (M. ‘Snowdrift’, M. ‘Hongling’ and M. ‘Hongjin’) in relation to Malus domestica (‘Gala’) and their role in pollination. Our method used a two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) to analyse the differential proteins in the pollen of several crabapples. The 2-DE apples combined with the tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS) and protein database retrieval helped us to identify the nature and function of DEPs in ‘Gala’ apples and crabapples. We identified 1195 proteins through 2-DE. Among these, six DEPs, namely chloroplast ferritin, Actin, Beta-fructofuranosidase, vacuolarH+-ATPase catalytic subunit, Full = Phosphoglucomutase, and Cytochrome b were identified by MS-MS. This study identified six DEPs among the pollen from the ‘Snowdrift’ crabapple, ‘Hongling’ crabapple, ‘Hongjin’ crabapple, and ‘Gala’ apples. The DEPs included metabolism related proteins, stress/regulatory proteins, and proteins involved in signal transduction.  相似文献

Summary

A number of factors were assessed for their effects on in vitro shoot proliferation and adventitious shoot regeneration. More in vitro leaves of a quality suitable for use in regeneration and transformation experiments were obtained from shoots on DKW proliferation medium compared with MS medium, and also on MS and DKW media containing phloroglucinol. Compared with MS medium, shoot proliferation was greater on MS with halved levels of NH4NO3 and KNO3. Adventitious shoots were hyperhydric on MS-based but not on DKW-based regeneration medium. More adventitious shoots regenerated on media solidified with Sigma Agargel than on media with Sigma Phytagel or Gelcarin (FMC). Viable transformed shoots were recovered on Sigma Agar or Agargel but not Phytagel. Wounding of leaf explants by stabbing with needles, and stabbing combined with scoring with a scalpel, increased the number of calli regenerating, and these methods, as well as solely scoring with a scalpel, increased the number of calli regenerating shoots compared with the control. Combined stabbing and scoring resulted in more calli producing shoots than solely scoring or stabbing. Vortexing leaf explants with silicon carbide whiskers increased the percentage of subsequently formed calli that regenerated shoots compared with the control. Transformed shoots were regenerated following co-cultivation with Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA101 harbouring the binary vector pSCV1.6 (with selectable marker gene npt II and GUS reporter gene uid A). The number of transformed shoots as a percentage of explants varied from 0.5% to 2.2%. Molecular analysis of the four extant transformed lines confirmed integration of the transgene and indicated that in three lines there was one integration site, and in one line there were four sites of integration.  相似文献

Summary

Four N application rates generated a range of tree N status as indicated by leaf N concentrations in six year old trees of `Mission' almond (Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D. A. Webb). Leaf N concentrations were related positively with concentrations of amino acids - especially asparagine and glutamine - in phloem and xylem saps. A pulse of 1.25 kg N per tree was applied to trees previously receiving 0, 78, 157 or 313 g N per tree, annually. Apparent uptake of soil N into above-ground tree parts was determined over a 39 d period. N uptake was determined as the difference in the products of tree biomass and tissue N concentrations before and after the N pulse. Tissue N concentrations increased signi®cantly in trees previously receiving the two lowest N application rates, whereas trees previously receiving the high N treatments were unresponsive. Tree N contents (0 g N per year, and also 78 g N per year treatments) increased slightly in response to the N pulse, although statistical differences were not observed due possibly to high variability in biomass among trees. At the same time, the amino acid concentrations in phloem exudate and xylem sap were highest in trees grown under the highest N fertilization regime. We suggest that the high amino acid concentrations in the phloem and xylem saps are indicative of a larger pool of amino N cycling throughout the vasculature of high N-status trees. Our data indicate an inverse relationship between tree N status, amino acid concentrations in xylem and phloem saps and capacity for soil N uptake in ®eld-grown trees. These results represent the ®rst ®eld data to correlate the concentration of amino acids circulating in the plant vasculature with soil N uptake. A functional relationship between the amino acid concentrations cycling within the tree and the regulation of soil N uptake has, however, not yet been established.  相似文献

Models relating species distribution records to environmental variables are increasingly applied to biodiversity conservation. Such techniques could be valuable to predict the distribution, abundance or habitat requirements of species that are rare or otherwise difficult to survey. However, despite widely-documented positive intraspecific relationships between occupancy and abundance, few studies have demonstrated convincing associations between models of habitat suitability based on species occurrence, and observed measures of habitat quality such as abundance. Here we compared models based on field-derived abundance and distribution (presence–absence) data for a rare mountain butterfly in 2006–2008. Both model types selected consistent effects of environmental variables, which corresponded to known ecological associations of the species, suggesting that abundance and distribution may be a function of similar factors. However, the models based on occurrence data identified stronger effects of a smaller number of environmental variables, indicating less uncertainty in the factors controlling distribution. Furthermore, cross-validation of the models using observed abundance data from different years, or averaged across years, suggested a marginally stronger ability of models based on occurrence data to predict observed abundance. The results suggest that, for some species, distribution models could be efficient tools for estimating habitat quality in conservation planning or management, when information on abundance or habitat requirements is costly or impractical to obtain.  相似文献

This qualitative study explores the topic of mental health/wellbeing with reference to exposure to urban green space (UGS). It builds on previous research, which has highlighted the potential for green space interaction for supporting positive emotional and mental wellbeing, particularly in times of stress and uncertainty. Using this basis, the paper explores whether UGS interaction also helped to mitigate the negative mental health impacts brought about by the first COVID-19 lockdown. The specific focus is on students and expatriates living in Berlin, Germany as this population groupbecame increasingly vulnerable during this time as a result of uncertainty and restrictions in their daily lives brought about the enforced lockdown measures. More specifically, this paper investigates how a change in their daily routines created opportunities to interact with and experience UGS differently and how their emotional response and perception towards these spaces changed. Semi-structured interviews allowed for stories, experiences and emotions to unfold, which revealed that the participants’ gained an appreciation for the potential of UGS to support their wellbeing during a stressful and isolating time. UGS interaction also allowed them to form tangible memories of summer 2020 as it provided a safe arena for them to maintain social contact with friends outdoors, or to escape their home environment and experience respite and relaxation in a natural setting. The findings demonstrate that for this sub-group of the population UGS became a reliable constant and a valuable public health resource, which may also help to mitigate the long-term adverse mental health impacts of the pandemic.  相似文献

An essential task of participatory action-research is to help close the policy implementation gap that leads to large discrepancies between policy frameworks and local practices. Too often, official regulations, laws and decrees fail to translate into concrete action on the ground. Loose institutional linkages between research, extension and local communities are often blamed as the main culprits for this gap. In turn, many stakeholders call for enhanced participation as a way to bring together scientists, development practitioners and local communities in negotiating competing claims for natural resources and designing realistic pathways towards sustainable development. Despite such general consensus about the value of participation, the latter cannot be decreed nor imposed. Participation is an emerging quality of collective-action and social-learning processes. In this paper, the experience of participatory land-use planning conducted in Laos serves to illustrate a model of the science–practice–policy interface that was developed to facilitate the interactions between three groups of stakeholders, i.e. scientists, planners and villagers, in designing future landscapes. Emphasis was put on developing an approach that is generic and adaptive enough to be applied nationally while engaging local communities in context-sensitive negotiations. The set of tools and methods developed through action-research contributed to enhanced communication and participation from initial consultation and cooperation stages towards collective decision-making and action. Both the activity of landscape design and the resulting patterns can be improved by incorporating landscape science in strategic multi-stakeholder negotiations.  相似文献

AIM: To determine if lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) regulates the proliferation of astrocytes (AS) and to approach the mechanism of the process.METHODS: The cerebral AS of the neonatal SD rats were cultured in vitro and divided randomly into control group, PKC excitomotor (PMA) group, LPA group, PKC-α inhibitor (Ro31-8220) group, Ro31-8220+PMA group and Ro31-8220+LPA group. The proliferation of the cells was detected by MTT assay and flow cytometry (FCM). The concentration of intra-cellular calcium ion of the cells ([Ca2+]i) which were labeled with Fura-2/AM was determined by ultraviolet spectrophotometer. The change of PKC-α inside the cells was observed by Western blotting.RESULTS: LPA and PMA stimulated the proliferation of AS, they also enhanced the expression of PKC-α and increased the concentration of [Ca2+]i. After pretreated with Ro31-8220, the abilities of LPA that mentioned above were decreased. The change of [Ca2+]i was associated with the diversity of PKC-α.CONCLUSION: LPA promotes the proliferation of AS via the way of PKC-α and Ca2+.  相似文献

Biodiversity conservation in economic areas like ports has recently become more important in the European Union due to a stricter interpretation of nature protection laws. In this study we develop a planning and design strategy—the ‘habitat backbone’—with which to support the long-term survival of pioneer species that occur in ports and have low dispersal abilities. For those species, long-term survival in port areas is uncertain because supply of their habitats (on vacant lots) is capricious and depends on land use dynamics. By gaining knowledge about spatial and temporal characteristics of these dynamics we were able to develop a solution to conserve such species. Our solution is based on the creation of permanent habitat—defined as a ‘backbone’—on (semi-) public land with an overall carrying capacity sufficient to support persistent populations. This best ensures long-term survival, and the backbone may also act as refugium. Satellite populations that emerge on adjacent vacant lots will thereby add to the persistence of the overall metapopulation. Management of permanent habitat is focused on retaining early-successional stages of vegetation. Implementing this strategy in the case of the natterjack toad in the Port of Antwerp taught us that realization of a habitat backbone is possible only if landowners, local governments and environmental NGOs cooperate. In the case at hand, such cooperation resulted in a plan that should ensure a coherent and persistent habitat network in which a chorus of some 1,400 natterjack toads could be accommodated—more than the number of toads currently observed.
