The possibility that alterations in liver function may occur during late pregnancy as well as after calving has been investigated in healthy dairy cows and the results compared with those from non-pregnant non-lactating cows. There were significant alterations in plasma total bilirubin, glucose, total ketone body and urea concentrations, in bromsulphthalein clearance and in plasma aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase activities in periparturient cows compared with non-pregnant non-lactating cows. Of these, only the alterations in glucose, ketone bodies and urea concentrations and bromsulphthalein half-time and retention were markedly different before calving. The degree of fatty infiltration of the liver was significant two weeks before as well as two weeks after calving which differed from previous reports. It seems likely that the changes in the liver in dairy cows are functional and reversible and related to the metabolic demands of late pregnancy and early lactation. The results suggest that such changes in the liver occur well before calving.  相似文献

Oxidative status during late pregnancy and early lactation in dairy cows   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the last few years, the detection of free radical damage and the body's defences against it have become increasingly important in clinical medicine as a complementary tool in the evaluation of metabolic status. The aim of this study was to evaluate, under field conditions, the anti-oxidant status of healthy cows during late pregnancy and lactation onset using two parameters: (1) plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a degradation product of lipid peroxidation, and (2) total antioxidant status (TAS). Results were compared with those obtained in another group of cows with lesser metabolic demands. We also investigated possible relationships between antioxidant status markers and other relevant blood parameters. Our results confirmed the characteristic metabolic changes associated with late pregnancy and early lactation. MDA and TAS provided an accurate reflection of the internal physiological status of the animal. The data indicated increased lipid peroxidation around parturition, but with wide individual variations that may be attributable not only to the physiological stage but also to unknown factors that will have to be further considered in future studies.  相似文献

Concentrations of penicillin-G in serum were determined after single intravenous doses of potassium penicillin-G (10 mg/kg body wt) to ewes and cows in late pregnancy and in early lactation. Penicillin-G in serum was analysed by a microbiological method and pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated by model-independent methods. Serum concentrations were lower in early lactation than in late pregnancy in both ewes and cows. The differences were statistically significant at most sampling times in ewes but only during the first hour in cows.
Weight corrected values of clearance and volume of distribution were significantly higher in early lactation than in late pregnancy in both ewes and cows. Mean residence time and elimination-half life were shorter in lactating than in pregnant ewes, however for the latter parameter the difference was not statistically significant. Neither of these parameters changed in cows.
It is concluded that in both ewes and cows pharmacokinetic parameters of penicillin-G are altered from late pregnancy to early lactation but that these changes have little practical impact and do not call for a revised dosage regime of the studied drug.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate supplementation of dried distillers grains with solubles (DGS) to spring-calving beef cows (n = 120; 541 kg of initial BW; 5.1 initial BCS) consuming low-quality forage during late gestation and early lactation. Supplemental treatments included (DM basis) 1) 0.77 kg/d DGS (DGSL); 2) 1.54 kg/d DGS (DGSI); 3) 2.31 kg/d DGS (DGSH); 4) 1.54 kg/d of a blend of 49% wheat middlings and 51% cottonseed meal (POS); and 5) 0.23 kg/d of a cottonseed hull-based pellet (NEG). Feeding rate and CP intake were similar for DGSI and POS. In Exp. 1, cows were individually fed 3 d/wk until calving and 4 d/wk during lactation; total supplementation period was 119 d, encompassing 106 d of gestation and 13 d of lactation. Tall-grass prairie hay (5.6% CP, 50% TDN, 73% NDF; DM basis) was fed for ad libitum intake throughout the supplementation period. Change in cow BW and BCS during gestation was similar for DGSI and POS (-5.0 kg, P = 0.61 and -0.13, P = 0.25, respectively) and linearly increased with increasing DGS level (P < 0.01). Likewise, during the 119-d supplementation period, BW and BCS change were similar for DGSI and POS (-72 kg, P = 0.22 and -0.60, P = 0.10) and increased linearly with respect to increasing DGS (P < 0.01). The percentage of cows exhibiting luteal activity at the beginning of breeding season (56%, P = 0.31), AI conception rate (57%, P = 0.62), or pregnancy rate at weaning (88%, P = 0.74) were not influenced by supplementation. In Exp. 2, 30 cows from a separate herd were used to evaluate the effect of DGS on hay intake and digestion. Supplementation improved all digestibility measures compared with NEG. Hay intake was not influenced by DGS (P > 0.10); digestibility of NDF, ADF, CP, and fat linearly increased with increasing DGS. In Exp. 3, milk production and composition were determined for cows (n = 16/treatment) of similar days postpartum from Exp. 1. Daily milk production was not influenced by supplementation (6.3 kg/d, P = 0.25). Milk fat (2.1%) and lactose (5.0%) were not different (P > 0.10). Milk protein linearly increased as DGS increased (P < 0.05) and was greater for DGSI compared with POS. Similar cow performance was achieved when cows were fed DGS at the same rate and level of CP as a traditional cottonseed meal-based supplement. Increasing amounts of DGS did not negatively influence forage intake or diet digestibility.  相似文献

Blood samples were taken at weekly intervals from fifty four dairy cows (mainly Friesians and Jerseys) during the periods 8 weeks before and 8 weeks after calving. The cows were divided into two age groups; Group 1 consisting of 26 cows 2 1/2 to 4 years old and Group 2 consisting of 28 cows over 4 years old.The changes in erythrocyte magnesium (EMg) and plasma magnesium (PMg) concentrations before and after calving were expressed as the slope of each blood parameter regressed on weeks. The post-partum EMg concentration slope (increase) was greater (P<0.05) in the older cows than in the young ones. The older cows also had higher (P<0.05) mean EMg concentrations than the young cows. Between cow EMg concentration variations were significant (P<0.05) in both age groups while the weekly EMg concentration variations were only significant (P<0.05) in the older cows after calving. Age did not influence the changes in PMg concentrations before or after calving. Nor did the PMg concentrations vary significantly either between cows or between weeks.  相似文献

The disposition of drugs may differ between pregnant and nonpregnant animals, necessitating a change in dosage. We hypothesized that volume of distribution or clearance may be different for aminoglycoside antibiotics in pregnant mares vs. nonpregnant lactating mares. To examine this hypothesis, we administered gentamicin sulfate to seven Thoroughbred and Quarterhorse mares on two occasions, followed by plasma drug gentamicin assay and pharmacokinetic analysis. The first dose was administered 1-4 weeks before parturition (mean weight 578 kg) and the second dose was administered in the period 1-4 weeks after parturition (mean weight 518 kg). The dose administered at each time was approximately 6.6 mg/kg, intravenously (i.v.). Plasma gentamicin concentrations were determined using fluorescence polarization immunoassay and pharmacokinetic analysis was performed using a two-compartment open model. The plasma concentration vs. time profiles and total area-under-the-curve were almost identical for mares at late gestation vs. early lactation. Mean volume of distribution at steady-state was 0.15 (+/-0.02) and 0.16 (+/-0.03) L/kg, systemic clearance was 1.06 (+/-0.17) and 1.11 (+/-0.17) mL/kg/min, and mean (harmonic) elimination half-life was 2.2 and 2.1 h, for pregnant and nonpregnant mares, respectively. We concluded that there were no differences in drug distribution and clearance between pregnant and nonpregnant lactating mares. Gentamicin was also assayed in plasma of newborn foals after an injection of 6.6 mg/kg to three of the mares within 60 min of parturition. Gentamicin was undetectable in plasma samples from these foals and, therefore, apparently does not cross the placenta of mares at term.  相似文献

Hereford heifers (48 initially) were individually fed variable amounts of dietary phosphorus (P) from weaning through their 8th gestation. During phase I, 2 groups (24 cows each) were given 20.6 to 38.1 g of P/day and 6.0 to 12.1 g of P/day (increasing as animals grew). During phase II (the 4th gestation), half of the animals from each group were maintained with the same respective diets, and the other half were given 5.1 to 6.6 g of P/day. Within 6 months, animals given 5.1 to 6.6 g of P/day gradually developed signs of P deficiency. Clinical signs of deficiency and lesions included general unthriftiness, body weight loss, reduced feed consumption, reluctance to move, abnormal stance, spontaneous bone fractures, and finally, impaired reproductive performance. Cows given 7.8 to 8.9 g of P/day in diet 2 during phase II did not develop discernible clinical signs of P deficiency. Cows that were given 5.1 to 6.6 g of P/day apparently regained their health and reproductive capability when fed 11.7 to 12.6 or 17.1 to 20.5 g of P/day. The data indicate that bones serve as an effective storage source of P and support and buffer body needs until there is serious depletion of skeletal P. These results indicate that common recommendations for dietary P, such as those outlined by the National Research Council (17.5 g of P/day over the entire year for cows weighing 450 kg), exceed the basic requirements for beef cattle; 12 g of P/day is adequate for 450-kg beef cows.  相似文献

Blood samples were taken at weekly intervals from 54 dairy cows (mainly Friesians and Jerseys) during the periods 8 weeks before and 8 weeks after calving. The cows were divided into two age groups; group 1 consisting of 26 cows aged 2 1/2 years and group 2 consisting of 28 cows aged 5–9 years. The changes in the erythrocyte sodium (ENa) and the erythrocyte potassium (EK) concentrations before and after calving were expressed as the slopes for each component regressed on weeks. In the older cows the concentration of ENa decreased (p<0.05) while that of EK increased (p<0.05) after calving. Both the ENa and EK concentrations varied significantly (p<0.01) between cows in the two age groups. The prepartum and postpartum ENa and the postpartum EK concentrations varied significantly (p<0.05) between weeks. EK type did not influence the changes in ENa or EK concentrations before or after calving.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of reducing the dietary phosphorus (P) supply during the first 4 months of lactation on P balance and bone metabolism were investigated in dairy cows during a full lactation, including the dry period. Twenty-two multiparous cows of the Swedish Red and White Breed were included in the experiment. Eleven cows received a dietary P concentration of 0.43% of DM during the whole lactation (NP), and 11 cows received a dietary P concentration of 0.32% of DM during the first 4 months of lactation, followed by 0.43% of DM during the rest of lactation (LP). Total collection of faeces was carried out during five different stages of lactation, for 5 consecutive days at each occasion. The dynamics of bone metabolism was investigated by monitoring one bone-formation marker, identifying osteocalcin (OC), and one bone-resorption marker identifying C-telopeptide fragments of collagen type I (CTx) in blood plasma. At the two first collection periods, 3–7 and 11–15 weeks after parturition, the apparent digestibility of P was higher in the LP cows (52%) than in the NP cows (42%). During the following collection periods, no difference in the apparent digestibility could be noted between the two groups of cows. Phosphorus retention did not differ between treatments at any collection period. The highest retention was observed during late lactation and during the dry period. The profiles of the bone metabolism markers indicated a net resorption of bone during early lactation, but there were no differences in marker concentrations between the groups during early lactation, indicating that the LP diet did not induce a further elevated net bone resorption.  相似文献

Dairy cow bone phosphorus (P) mobilization and deposition and their influence on P requirements were studied over the lactation cycle. Thirty Holsteins received a common diet during the dry period and one of the following three dietary treatments that varied in P percentage during the subsequent lactation (44 weeks): (i) 0.36 throughout (constant P, 0.36‐0.36‐0.36), (ii) 0.36 for 30 weeks then 0.29 for 14 weeks (P changed once, 0.36‐0.36‐0.29), and (iii) 0.43 for 10 weeks, 0.36 for 20 weeks, and 0.29 for 14 weeks (P changed twice, 0.43‐0.36‐0.29). Six P balance studies were conducted during the experiment, including one during the dry period and five along lactation, based on P intake, faecal P, urinary P and milk P, when appropriate. Blood samples were taken during balance to analyse bone formation (osteocalcin) and resorption (pyridinoline) marker concentrations and rib biopsies performed to determine bone P content. Phosphorus balance was negative during weeks ?4 to ?1 relative to lactation for all groups and remained negative for cows fed 0.36% P during weeks 1–5, but showed a positive value for cows that received 0.43% P. The balance was close to zero for all groups at weeks 19–23 and showed a clear retention during weeks 38–42; by the end of lactation, cows re‐stored most of the P mobilized earlier. The pattern in P balance was consistent with changes in blood bone metabolism marker concentrations, rib bone P content, and faecal and urinary P concentrations over the experiment, indicating that cows, irrespective of the dietary P treatments received, mobilized P from bone during the late dry period when fed a low‐Ca diet and early lactation, and re‐stored P in late lactation. This dynamic of P metabolism can have important implications for dietary P requirements and ration formulations.  相似文献

Partitioning of energy during lactation of primiparous beef cows   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
For a beef cow to continue in an annual production cycle, she must rebreed within 3 mo after calving. Malnutrition during this period frequently results in failure of the cow to become pregnant. The energetic needs of the cow are increased by lactation, and additional energy is required for growth of the primiparous cow. Determining energy expenditures during the first 40 to 60 d postpartum is critical to developing feed programs that will allow cows to become pregnant with a second calf. Sixty-seven balance trials were conducted on 25 MARC III cows (4-breed composite: (1/4) Hereford, (1/4) Angus, (1/4) Red Poll, and (1/4) Pinzgauer) that were between 3 and 53 d in milk. Cows' BW were 481 +/- 4 kg. Metabolizable energy intake ranged from 14.8 to 28.9 Mcal/d. Milk yields ranged from 4.7 to 13.3 kg/d. Recovered energy (RE) increased linearly with increased ME intake. Forty-seven observations were obtained with cows in negative tissue energy (TE) balance, and 20 observations were obtained with cows in positive TE balance. Estimated zero RE from regression analysis of RE on ME intake was 146 kcal of ME/kg of BW(0.75). Efficiency of conversion of ME to lactation energy (LE) was 72%. The efficiency for conversion of ME to TE and the conversion of TE to LE was 78%. Our findings suggest that, even though their milk production is lower, the overall efficiency of energy retention in young beef cows is similar to that of dairy cows.  相似文献

Accidental urea intoxication resulted in the death of 17 of 29 suckler cows within six hours after the contamination of their drinking water with urea fertiliser. The other cows showed no lasting ill effects and neither their three-month-old calves nor the stock bull were affected. The urea concentration in the water was 86 mmol/litre, and the concentrations of ammonia nitrogen in the rumen fluid of two of the cows which were examined after death were 1825 and 957 mg/litre. The clinical signs and post mortem findings are described.  相似文献

Data were collected over four consecutive years from four, rotationally grazed, grassland management systems each with 15 spring-calving beef suckler cows and their progeny to 13 months of age. The Systems were high stocking rate (SR), high fertiliser nitrogen (N), 2 silage harvests — HH2; high SR, low N, 2 silage harvests — HL2; low SR, low N, 2 silage harvests — LL2, and low SR, low N, 1 silage harvest — LL1. High and low SR were 0.49 and 0.59 ha cow− 1 unit, respectively, and high and low N amounted to an annual input of 239 and 57 kg ha− 1 on the grazing areas, respectively. Where applicable, the four Systems received 114 and 80 kg of N ha− 1 for the first and second silage harvests, respectively. Equal areas of Systems HH2, HL2 and LL2 were conserved as silage (0.29 and 0.21 ha for first (24 May) and second (4 August) harvests, respectively cow− 1 unit) each year. Silage from System LL1 (0.37 ha cow− 1 unit) was conserved 14 days after the other first harvests. Following the final harvesting for silage within any System these areas of grassland were then grazed. During the winter all animals were housed and cows were offered grass silage and calves were offered silage plus 1 kg of concentrate per head daily. Good cow and calf performance at pasture were obtained at both high SR and high N or low SR and low N. At the high SR, increasing the level of fertiliser N application increased cow liveweight gain at pasture by 24 kg, improved body condition score (BCS) gain at pasture by 0.36 units and prolonged the grazing season by 7 days. Similarly, at the low level of fertiliser N, reducing the SR, increased cow liveweight gain at pasture by 21 kg, improved BCS gain at pasture by 0.23 units and prolonged the grazing season by 7 days. At the low SR all the winter silage requirements could be provided in one as opposed to two harvests thereby reducing the conservation area. However, delayed harvesting of silage resulted in lower silage digestibility and reduced calf performance in winter. The results indicate the specifications for a planned lower N grassland system, particularly where qualification for EU environmental schemes is dependent on moderate stocking densities.  相似文献

Data from an observational study, carried out during a 4.5 year period (1986–1990), were used to quantify the effects of health disorders on the risk of culling. The study population consisted of 47 commercial Holstein dairy herds from western France, comprising 4123 cows.

Logistic regression was used to assess the relationships between health disorders and early and late culling. Fourteen main health disorders with clinical signs and one subclinical disease were studied: abortion, periparturient accident, calving provided with assistance, digestive disorders, ketosis, locomotor disorders, mastitis, metritis, milk fever, cystic ovaries, respiratory disorders, retained placenta, teat injuries, non-traumatic udder disorders and status with respect to milk somatic cell count. Adjustments were made for year, month of calving, parity, breeding value for milk, best of the two first milk production records and reproductive performance. The possible effects of interactions among variables were also studied. The herd effect was taken into account using random effect models.

Non-traumatic udder disorders, teat injuries, milk fever and the occurrence of both ketosis and assistance at calving were significantly associated with an increased risk of being early culled (odds ratios (OR) ranging from 1.6 to 10.3). Early and late abortion, late metritis, poor peproductive performance, retained placenta, non-traumatic udder disorders within 45 days post-partum and mastitis occurring in the first 3 months of the lactation were positively associated with a late culling (OR ranging from 1.2 to 6.6). Cows with lower breeding value for milk and higher parities were high risk groups for culling. A lower level of milk production and occurrence of both reproductive disorders and poor reproductive performance were risk factors for late culling.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: A ten-year-old beef suckler cow was referred to the Scottish Centre for Production Animal Health & Food Safety of the University of Glasgow, because of facial swelling in the region of the right maxilla. The facial swelling was first noticed three months earlier and was caused by a slow growing oral mass which contained displaced, loosely embedded teeth. The radiographic, laboratory and clinicopathological findings are described. Necropsy, gross pathology and histological findings confirmed the mass as a maxillary osteosarcoma.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was conducted to evaluate the use of a system of timed artificial insemination (TAI) and early diagnosis of pregnancy in Nelore beef cows in order to reduce the breeding season (BS) from 150 to 90 days and analyze the factors affecting the conception rate of cows selected for TAI. The study included 110 Nelore cows belonging to the Experimental Farm Capim Branco, Brazil. The body condition scores (BCS) were evaluated, and those above 2.50 were included in the TAI protocol. Five groups of cows were formed at intervals of 21 days postpartum and then commenced a 9-day progesterone protocol. Progesterone devices were used three times. Statistical analysis of binary variables was performed by logistic regression in the program Proc Logistic of Sas. A 5% of significance (P < 0.05) was used to determine the presence of statistical differences and the effect of independent variables on conception rate. The TAI and early diagnosis of pregnancy reduces the BS from 150 to 90 days without changing the pregnancy rate. The conception rate was not affected by the presence of the calf (P > 0.05), the corpus luteum (P > 0.05), the BCS (P > 0.05), or the number of reuses of the intravaginal progesterone device (P > 0.05). Therefore, this technique is beneficial for breeding Nelore beef cattle and can be used in anestrous cows with a BCS above 2.50. Additionally, the progesterone devices can be reused to reduce the cost of the protocol without compromising the results.  相似文献
