The object of this study was to determine the importance of frequency and height of defoliation on regrowth potential of Lolium perenne. Defoliation interval was based on stage of the regrowth cycle, as indicated by leaves per tiller.
Simulated swards of Lolium perenne cv Yatsyn were grown as individual plants in a glasshouse kept at a day/night temperature of 25°C/15°C.
Treatments imposed were defoliation at 2, 5 or 12 cm residual height, and low and high water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) level obtained by varying defoliation interval, i.e. defoliating at the 1-leaf or 3-leaf stage of the regrowth cycle. Regrowth after frequent short defoliations was only 65% of the less frequently defoliated plants taken over the full regrowth cycle. This was associated with a lower stubble WSC content (2·15 vs 17·5% in stubble) and a twenty-seven-fold difference in the amount of WSC in the stubble per plant. This difference in total WSC was a combined effect of more and heavier tillers and higher WSC content in stubble of plants defoliated less frequently at the end of the regrowth cycle. The regrowth of plants with WSC levels depleted by frequent defoliation when defoliated at 2 cm was significantly below that of those defoliated at 5 and 12 cm.
The results indicate the desirability of defoliating plants at the 3-leaf stage of the regrowth cycle. This not only allows the full regrowth potential to be expressed in that growth cycle, but also in the next cycle, by allowing the replenishment of WSC reserves and optimizing tiller status. The potential to regrow appears then to be based more on the total amount of WSC than the proportion of WSC in stubble. 相似文献

A field-study was undertaken in Hamilton, New Zealand to determine if there was an interaction between water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) reserve content and defoliation severity on the regrowth of perennial ryegrass-dominant swards during winter. Perennial ryegrass plants with either low or high WSC content were obtained by varying the defoliation frequency. At the third defoliation at the one-leaf stage and at the first defoliation at the three-leaf stage (harvest H1 ), swards were mown with a rotary lawnmower to residual stubble heights of 20, 40 or 60 mm. All swards were then allowed to regrow to the three-leaf stage before again defoliating to their treatment residual stubble heights (H2 ). Frequently defoliated plants contained proportionately between 0·37 and 0·48 less WSC in the stubble after defoliation, depending on the severity of defoliation. There was no interaction between WSC content and defoliation severity for herbage regrowth between harvests H1 and H2 . Herbage regrowth was lower from swards containing low WSC plants compared with high WSC plants (2279 vs. 2007 kg DM ha−1 ). Furthermore, swards defoliated to 20 or 40 mm had greater herbage regrowth compared with those defoliated to 60 mm (2266, 2249 and 1914 kg DM ha−1 for swards defoliated to residual stubble heights of 20, 40 and 60 mm, respectively). Regrowth of perennial ryegrass was positively correlated with post-defoliation stubble WSC content within defoliation severity treatment, implying that WSC contributed to the defoliation frequency-derived difference in herbage yield. However, the effect of defoliation severity on herbage regrowth was not associated with post-defoliation stubble WSC content. 相似文献

A field study was undertaken between April 2003 and May 2004 in southern Tasmania, Australia to quantify and compare changes in herbage productivity and water‐soluble carbohydrate (WSC) concentration of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), prairie grass (Bromus willdenowii Kunth.) and cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) under a defoliation regime based on leaf regrowth stage. Defoliation interval was based on the time taken for two, three or four leaves per tiller to fully expand. Dry‐matter (DM) production and botanical composition were measured at every defoliation event; plant density, DM production per tiller, tiller numbers per plant and WSC concentration were measured bimonthly; and tiller initiation and death rates were monitored every 3 weeks. Species and defoliation interval had a significant effect (P < 0·05) on seasonal DM production. Prairie grass produced significantly more (P < 0·001) DM than cocksfoot and ryegrass (5·7 vs. 4·1 and 4·3 t DM ha?1 respectively). Plants defoliated at the two‐leaf stage of regrowth produced significantly less DM than plants defoliated at the three‐ and four‐leaf stages, irrespective of species. Defoliation interval had no effect on plant persistence of any species during the first year of establishment, as measured by plant density and tiller number. However, more frequent defoliation was detrimental to the productivity of all species, most likely because of decreased WSC reserves. Results from this study confirmed that to maximize rates of regrowth, the recommended defoliation interval for prairie grass and cocksfoot is the four‐leaf stage, and for perennial ryegrass between the two and three‐leaf stages. 相似文献

Plants of Holcus lanatus L. and Lolium perenne L. were grown in monocultures and in 50:50 mixtures and cut at three heights and at three frequencies during 24 weeks. The higher the H. lanatus plants were cut the greater was their harvested yield but height of cutting did not affect the yield of L. perenne. Reduction in the frequency of cutting increased the total harvested yield of both species in monoculture. In mixture, H. lanatus dominated L. perenne , especially with high and infrequent cutting. Stubble yields generally followed harvested yields.
In a second experiment, H. lanatus plants were cut sequentially in spring; plants cut in early June produced very few panicles in the regrowth.

In field trials in 1979–81, perennial ryegrass cultivars Royal and Majestic (amenity) and Morenne (agricultural) produced maximum seed yields at levels of applied N ranging from 40 kg ha−1 to 160 kg ha−1 . Available soil N levels were estimated at 55 kg ha−1 ; hence maximum seed yields were obtained at total nitrogen levels of 95–135 kg ha−1 in Royal, 95–215 kg ha−1 in Morenne, and 175–215 kg ha−1 in Majestic.
Applied N at rates above 120 kg ha−1 either reduced or did not significantly increase seed yield, decreased seed numbers per unit area and decreased spikelets per tiller and seeds per spikelet.

At every defoliation event, samples were collected and analysed for acid‐detergent fibre (ADF), neutral‐detergent fibre (NDF) and total nitrogen (N) concentrations and to estimate metabolizable energy (ME) and digestible dry matter (DDM) concentrations. Amounts of crude protein (CP) and metabolizable energy (MJ) per hectare values were subsequently calculated. There was a significantly lower (P < 0·001) NDF concentration for perennial ryegrass compared with prairie grass and cocksfoot, and a significantly lower (P < 0·001) ADF concentration for cocksfoot compared with prairie grass and perennial ryegrass, regardless of defoliation interval. The CP concentration of cocksfoot was significantly greater (P < 0·001) compared with the CP concentrations of prairie grass and perennial ryegrass. The estimated ME concentrations in cocksfoot were high enough to satisfy the requirements of a lactating dairy cow, with defoliation at or before the four‐leaf stage maintaining ME concentrations between 10·7 and 10·9 MJ kg?1 DM, and minimizing reproductive plant development. The ME concentrations of prairie grass (10·2–10·4 MJ kg?1 DM) were significantly lower (P < 0·001) than for cocksfoot (as above) and perennial ryegrass (11·4–11·6 MJ kg?1 DM) but a higher DM production per hectare resulted in prairie grass providing the greatest amounts of ME ha?1. 相似文献

In some European countries, the majority of annual enteric methane (CH4) emissions by ruminants occur at pasture – a direct result of the predominance of grazing within ruminant production systems. However, there are only limited data available as to the effect of perennial ryegrass cultivar and season of harvest on CH4 production. Using the in vitro gas production technique, the effect of perennial ryegrass cultivar on fermentation characteristics and CH4 production was determined (Experiment 1) and the persistence of these traits throughout the growing season for two cultivars, identified from Experiment 1 as having either a high or low methanogenic potential, was examined (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, organic matter (OM) digestibility and cumulative total gas production profiles were unaffected by cultivar but, with regard to the kinetics of CH4 production, the asymptote value (A), cumulative CH4 yield at 72 h, and the fractional rate (μ) of CH4 production at both time of 0·5A(T)(μCH4T) and at 48 h (μCH448h) were significantly (P < 0·05) different. The amount of digested OM, as a proportion of cumulative CH4 production (DigOM/CH4) at 24 and 72 h after commencement of inoculation, revealed that the amount of substrate required to produce 1 ml of CH4 also differed significantly between cultivars (P < 0·01). In Experiment 2, regrowth number significantly modified the majority of measured samples (P < 0·01); cultivar effects were limited to the lag phase of the cumulative CH4 production curve and DigOM/CH4 at 8 h only (P < 0·05). These results suggest that differences exist between cultivars in how OM is partitioned following microbial fermentation and that these differences demonstrate persistency throughout the growing season. In the course of time it may be possible to exploit these differences through cultivar selection and plant breeding programmes, and thereby reduce enteric CH4 emissions within pastoral production systems. 相似文献

The effects of water and nitrogen (N) availabilities and their possible interactions on the seed yield and yield components of S23 perennial ryegrass grown in pots in the glasshouse were investigated. Increasing the N fertilizer from 0 to 5 g per pot more than doubled the seed yield but no further increase in seed yield was found by increasing N fertilizer from 5 to 10 g per pot. The main effect of increasing water availability was to increase both seed and straw yield. When N had been applied, accumulated evapotranspiration was linearly related to seed and straw yield. The component of yield having the greatest effect on yield was the number of fertile tillers and, although both N and water availability affected this component, N had the larger effect. Implications of these responses are discussed in relation to the potential yield of the crop and to the field situation. 相似文献

Three Lolium perenne L. genotypes collected from different natural habitats were tested for the effects of their fungal endophyte Neotyphodium spp. on plant growth and seed yield. Half the clones of the originally infected plants were subjected to fungicide treatment to eradicate the endophytes. In an experiment, the clones were planted separately into pots and were either watered adequately or subjected to drought stress. In the genotype collected from a dry site, the endophyte infection reduced plant growth at an adequate water supply, but increased regrowth under drought. In the genotype from a periodically either flooded or dry site, endophyte infection significantly promoted the development of reproductive tillers and seed production (effects which are associated with adaptation to drought). In contrast, the genotype that originated from a wet site showed higher sensitivity to drought stress when endophyte infection was present. The results suggest that environmental conditions in the original habitat of the plants may influence the symbiotic interaction between plant and fungus, probably through natural selection. However, endophyte‐induced increases in root dry weight and root/shoot ratio were recorded for all three genotypes. These features could be beneficial for plant persistence, especially on sites where water is the growth‐limiting factor. 相似文献

Preliminary experiments were conducted to assess the winter hardiness of representative cultivars or populations of Festuca rubra, Holcus lanatus and Agrostis spp. in comparison with a hardy (Premo) and a susceptible (Grasslands Ruanui) cultivar of Lolium perenne. Two controlled-environment tests and a field experiment including two cutting and two fertilizer managements are reported.
Grasslands Ruanui and H lanatus suffered most damage in all tests. In the controlled-environment experiments, Premo was at least as hardy as the F. rubra and Agrostis cultivars but in the field Premo was more susceptible. Spring growth of Premo was affected more by the cutting and fertilizer managements applied the previous summer and autumn than was spring growth of F. rubra or Agrostis spp.
It was concluded that, whereas use off. F. rubra or Agrostis spp. should not be limited by fears of winter damage, poor winter hardiness may limit the value of H. lanatus for hill and upland reseeding. 相似文献

Pot experiments and a hand-weeded field trial were carried out to investigate the direct effect of ethofumesate on the growth and development of Lolium perenne cv. S24.
In the field trial, ethofumesate was applied in autumn as Nortron 20% ec formulation in a volume of 2001 ha-1 at rates of 0, 1 or 2 kg a.i. ha-1 . Treatments had no direct effect on yield in the following summer. In both the field trial and pot experiments there was initial growth suppression in the form of a reduction in shoot dry weight, lamina dry weight, tiller number per plant and plant height. However, ethofumesate increased the chlorophyll and nitrogen contents of L. perenne laminae, but only when available soil nitrogen was not limited.
It is concluded that ethofumesate can increase the yield of L. perenne by suppressing weed competition, but there is no evidence of the herbicide directly increasing the growth or yield of cv. S24. 相似文献

The effect of defoliation and nitrogen application on the cold tolerance of four varieties of Italian ryegrass was assessed using controlled environment chambers. Both defoliation and nitrogen fertilizer markedly reduced overall cold tolerance and this closely matched changes in winter hardiness induced by similar treatments applied to the same varieties in a field experiment. However, the relative response of individual varieties differed from that found under field conditions. Thus, RvP showed high levels of tolerance to low temperatures in the controlled environments and was also winter-hardy under field tests; by contrast Bb 1430, although previously shown to be winter hardy in the field, exhibited low tolerance of cold stress in growth chambers. Thus, results obtained in controlled environment tests cannot be entirely equated to winter hardiness in the field. Water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) levels were reduced by both defoliation and nitrogen application and there were significant overall differences between varieties. It was not possible, however, to detect any clear relationship between these differences in WSC levels and cold tolerance. The significance of these results in relation to the use of controlled environment chambers for selecting for improved winter hardiness is discussed. 相似文献

In grass-seed production, the purity of the product is of major importance and high purity can only be obtained by preventing contamination with other species and cultivars during the whole crop rotation. In this context, seeds of previously grown grass species or varieties are particularly important. This study investigated the influence of different soil tillage practices on persistence of newly shed seeds of two grass species, Poa pratensis and Lolium perenne . Leaving the seeds at or close to the soil surface reduced seed survival of both species to low levels compared with strategies that involved a deep incorporation of the seeds shortly after seed-shedding. Survival rate of seeds of P. pratensis after 1 year was reduced to a low level when seeds were left at the soil surface for 2–3 months before incorporation. Seeds of L. perenne were less persistent and survival rate after 1 year was generally very low if the seeds were left near the soil surface for approximately 1 month before deeper incorporation. Use of the stale seedbed technique to reduce the seedbank of the two species in the autumn ahead of a spring-established grass-seed crop was also found to be effective in reducing the potential risk of contamination. 相似文献

Two early perennial ryegrass varieties (Cropper and RvP Hay Pasture), an intermediate perennial ryegrass (Talbot) and an early cocksfoot (Roskilde) were grazed fortnightly by sheep, mown to simulate grazing or left undefoliated from January to May. The effects of spring management on ear emergence, D-value ( in vitro ) and conservation yields were assessed in each of the 2 years 1976 and 1977. Grazing and mowing had a similar effect on date of first (5%) and 50% ear emergence of the ryegrass varieties; the effect was an average delay of 2 d in both stages of growth over the 2 years. Defoliations significantly (P<0·001) delayed the fall in D-value with no significant differences between grazing and mowing in the ryegrass varieties, nor in cocksfoot in 1977. The occurrence of a D-value of 67 was delayed by between 3 and 8 d for the ryegrasses and 9 and 11 d for the cocksfoot. The early ryegrasses produced stemmy regrowths and fell to 67 D-value about 4 weeks after the final defoliations in 1976 and after 5–6 weeks in 1977. The fall in D-value took 7–14 d longer in the intermediate ryegrass. Yields were significantly ( P < 0·001) reduced by grazing and mowing, particularly in 1976. The DM yield reductions in mid June averaged 25% for the ryegrasses and 41% for the cocksfoot.
The results indicate that either first or 50% ear emergence may be used to indicate times when a D-value of 67 will be reached in grazed or ungrazed swards but further work is required to determine the effect of weather conditions on the accuracy of this prediction. Field experiments in 1981 and 1981 examined assimilate distribution in lodged and non-lodged plots of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne) , cv. S24, grown for seed. Lodging was prevented either mechanically (1982 only) or chemically, by application of paclobutrazol (PP333) at 2 0 kg a.i. ha-1 . For each treatment, main-tiller ears, stems and leaves and subtending vegetative tillers were fed with 14 CO2 at 24 and 17 days after anthesis in 1981 and 1982, respectively, and the pattern of 14 C-assimilate export from each fed part was determined.
Prevention of lodging increased assimilate movement to the ear from the flag leaf, although movement from main-tiller leaves was primarily downwards to vegetative tillers. Assimilate movement to the stem was also increased because the cessation of stem elongation was delayed, especially where lodging was prevented by PP333. Both increases were at the expense of the tillers, although their number was not reduced in non-lodged plots. Possible reasons for these changes in assimilate distribution are discussed. 相似文献

Application at spikelet initiation of the growth retardant paclobutrazol (PP333) at a rate of 2.0 kg a.i. ha−1 increased the seed yield of perennial ryegrass cv. S24 from 139 to 180 g m−2 in 1981, and from 111 to 256 g m−2 in 1982. Yield increases were associated with an increased production of fertile tillers in both years and with an increased number of seeds per spikelet in 1982. Other yield components were not changed. Seed yield increased with increasing PP333 application rate in both years. No significant yield difference was recorded between application at spikelet and floret initiation in 1981.
Lodging was prevented completely by the 2.0-kg rate, delayed until after anthesis by the 1.0-kg rate and began before anthesis with the 0.5-kg rate. PP333 reduced stem internode length and strengthened the base of the stem; total stem dry matter (DM) was reduced, but root DM accumulation was increased at all rooting depths. Perennial ryegrass (PRG, Lolium perenne L.) breeding effort in New Zealand (NZ) has increased since c. 1990, resulting in greater functional trait diversity (e.g. heading date, ploidy, and associated Epichloë endophyte strain) in commercial products. This study quantified the variation, associations and interactions in dry matter (DM) yield, nutritive value and persistence-related traits among commercial cultivar-endophyte combinations released between 1973 and 2012, as a basis for assessing gains in value being delivered to the pasture-based livestock industries. Twenty-four or 28 combinations were compared over 3 years in two trials in each of two regions: Waikato in northern NZ (dryland), and Canterbury in central eastern South Island (irrigated). Cultivar-endophyte combinations were sown in mixtures with white clover, and pastures were intensively grazed 8–11 times per year by dairy cows. Principal Component Analysis identified 4 distinct clusters for the DM yield variables and for metabolisable energy (ME) content in each of the four trials. A broadly-adapted group of three late-season flowering, AR37-infected diploids with NZ and Spanish breeding backgrounds dominated the highest-yielding clusters. Tetraploids dominated the high ME content clusters. Interactions with region were observed throughout the data set: the strongest of these was driven by endophyte strain effects in Waikato. High-yielding cultivar-endophyte combinations in these trials were also generally high-yielding in the standard cultivar merit testing system operated in New Zealand, as interpreted via the DairyNZ Forage Value Index. However, alignment was poorer for medium- and lower-yielding cultivar-endophyte combinations. Several implications for forage evaluation methods and end-user industries are identified. 相似文献

Genotypic variation in patterns of root distribution, nitrate interception and response to moisture stress were assessed in both parents and 198 progeny of a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) full‐sibling mapping population. This was carried out in metre‐deep tubes of sand culture in a glasshouse experiment. The proportion of root dry matter (DM) weight in the top 10 cm of sand ranged from 0·33 to 0·75 and values of log10(1 ? K), where K is the constant for an exponential model relating root DM weight and root depth, also showed wide variation among genotypes. The proportion of a pulse of 15N recovered in whole plants ranged from 0·124 to 0·431. There was a positive linear correlation between the proportion of 15N recovered and plant total DM weight, but no relationship between nitrate interception and patterns of distribution of DM weight of roots. Some genotypes responded to moisture stress by increasing root growth, and in others root growth was inhibited. It is concluded that this below‐ground variability in root variables may be an evolutionary adaptation by plant populations to survive heterogeneity in soil biotic and edaphic factors. 相似文献

Ryegrass/white clover pastures were reseeded on heather moor in north-cast Scotland in 1978/79. By 1981, despite moderate fertilizer applications, the pastures had deteriorated and dry matter (DM) production was low. After preliminary soil and herbage analysis an omission trial was carried out in 1982/83 at two sites (A and B) to identify the factors which limited production.
At site A depressions in growth occurred in the absence of N, P and K. Perennial ryegrass was severely N deficient with concentrations in leaves of less than 22 g N kg−1 in spring and summer even after application of 120 kg N ha−1 annually. Rates of nitrogen fixation were high in spring but rapidly declined in June and July as the soil moisture tension increased. Application of N fertilizer also reduced the N2 fixation rate. Deficiencies of F and K occurred despite apparently high levels of extractable F in the soil. Uptake of these nutrients was inhibited in the dry soil during the summer. White clover was more susceptible to drought than perennial ryegrass, probably because it rooted at a shallower depth.
Growth at site B was limited by acidity and lack of N and K. The soil pH was 4 8 (s.d. = 0middot;75) at 1-5 cm depth. Application of 2 5 t lime ha−1 in spring 1982 had not altered the pH by autumn 1983.
It was concluded that methods of incorporating lime into the soil, together with ways of increasing the rates of N2 fixation by white clover and transfer to grass, should be investigated further. The common forage grass Lolium perenne has evolved with the systemic fungal endophyte Epichloë festucae var. lolii. The endophyte provides herbivore resistance to the grass due to defensive alkaloids, some of which are toxic to grazing livestock. In this field study, we determine whether distribution of the endophyte‐grass association changes along a land‐use intensity gradient on 87 managed grasslands in three German regions. Endophyte infections were detected in 66% of the studied sites and infection rates within infected sites ranged from 1% to 95%. Alkaloid concentrations of lolitrem B (vertebrate toxin) exceeded the toxicity thresholds in 50 (14%) of 351 infected plants and of peramine (invertebrate deterrent/toxin) in 12 (3%) of 351 plants. Infection rates and alkaloid concentrations were not significantly affected by land‐use intensity and region, but alkaloid concentrations were higher in summer compared to spring. We conclude that risks for livestock intoxication are currently low, as (i) average alkaloid concentrations per grassland were always below toxicity thresholds and as (ii) none of the grasslands was dominated by L. perenne. We suggest avoidance of grass monocultures in Europe to keep intoxication risks for livestock low; we also recommend regular examination of seeds and grasslands, as seed producers might accidentally distribute infected seeds, and as climate warming might further enhance the distribution of Epichloë endophytes in European grasslands. 相似文献
