The influence of latent and of splenectomy-induced clinically manifest Eperythrozoon suis infection on the following parameters of the carbohydrate metabolism and the acid-base status was tested in venous blood of German Landrace pigs: Levels of glucose, lactic and pyruvic acid, blood-pH, base excess, actual bicarbonate concentration, standard bicarbonate concentration, pCO2, pO2. The latent E. suis infection resulted in a consistent decrease of blood glucose level. 23 days after infection, blood glucose was reduced by 25% of the initial value. The other parameters were not changed by latent E. suis infection. Acute Eperythrozoonosis induced severe hypoglycaemia (means Gluc, = 39.7 mg/dl and blood acidosis (means pH = 7.13). In vitro experiments showed that break-down of glucose in E. suis infected blood occurs very rapidly. There was no significant reduction of the glucose concentration in control blood that had been treated accordingly. There was an increase of lactic acid (means = 62.7 mg/dl), pyruvic acid (means = 1.86 mg/dl), and pCO2 (means = 82.1 mm Hg). The concentrations of actual bicarbonate (means = 24.8 mmol/l) and standard bicarbonate (means = 20.9 mmol/l) were lowered, and there was a negative base excess (means = -3.56 mmol/l). The ratio of lactic and pyruvic acid changed from 11:1 to 30:1. It seems likely that E. suis itself is able to metabolize glucose. Acidosis is considered to result from both the increase of lactic acid (metabolic component) and an impairment of pulmonary gas exchange (respiratory component).  相似文献

Microbial and fermentation changes in the ingesta of the large intestine and their influence on the pathogenesis of acute lactic acidosis were studied in 4 cows fitted with permanent cannulas in the ileum and cecum. Feed mixture containing 65% of maize was infused into the cecum for several days in amounts of 2 and 4 kg per day. The daily amount was divided in 8 equal portions and given with 3 l of warm physiologic saline solution. During the period of ad libitum feeding of hay, the pH values in cecal digesta were 7.4 to 7.6 and the amount of total volatile fatty acids 40-60 mmol/kg with high molar percentage (87-90 mol%) of acetic acid. As to lactic acid only the L(+) lactic isomer was found in a concentration of about 0.4 mmol/kg. Infusion of low amounts of starch induced mild lactic acid fermentation in the cecum associated with a pronounced increase in the concentration of L(+) and D (-) lactic acid to peak levels of 80 +/- 10 mmol/kg and 7 +/- 1 mmol/kg, respectively. Lactic acid fermentation ceased within 2 to 3 days indicating that the gut microflora had adapted to the starch infusion. Slight decreases of blood pH and bicarbonates in blood as well as a moderate increase of netto acid-base excretion in urine indicated mild changes of acid-base balance, but clinically no pathological symptoms were observed. Higher amounts of infused starch caused pronounced lactic acid production in the large intestine which persisted throughout the experiment. Peak L(+) and D(-) lactic acid concentration in cecal digesta reached on the average 137 +/- 16 mmol/kg and 45 +/- 7 mmol/kg respectively. Significant decreases of blood pH values from 7.41 +/- 0.02 to 7.18 +/- 0.08 (P < 0.001), actual bicarbonate from 28.2 +/- 3.2 to 11.0 +/- 2.6 mmol/l (P < 0.001) and base excess from 3.9 +/- 3.6 to -15.2 +/- 3.8 mmol/l (P < 0.001) were observed. D (-) lactic acid concentration in blood increased to 3.2 +/- 0.4 mmol/l, but L(+) lactic acid values remained unchanged under 1 mmol/l. Clear clinical symptoms of indigestion and intoxication characterized by severe inappetence, ruminal stasis and general weakness were also observed. Typical clinical symptoms of disease as well as blood and urine changes in acid-base balance indicated that lactic acid fermentation in the large intestine contributes considerably to the pathogenesis of acute ruminant lactic acidosis.  相似文献

We investigated the diet content and properties of blood and milk in 11 pairs of Japanese Black cows and their calves for the one month following delivery. Four pairs (group A) had been no cases of white diarrhea during the year prior to this study, and 7 pairs (group B) had been a high occurrence of white diarrhea in calves during the same period. Properties of dams' diet in groups A and B before the onset of white diarrhea in calves were as follows: TDN fullness rate 98 +/- 2% vs. 110 +/- 5%, DCP fullness rate 151 +/- 2% vs. 200 +/- 33%, and starch content 5 +/- 2% vs. 14 +/- 3%. Blood and milk samples were collected from cows weekly and at the onset of white diarrhea in calves. No calves in group A had white diarrhea, while 5 out of 7 calves in group B had the diarrhea in this study. All cows were fed mixed hay, but 3 out of 5 cows whose calves had white diarrhea had been additionally given 3.0-3.5 kg of corn-silage a day from 4-5 days before onset. In all cows in the white diarrhea development group, the fat content of milk increased by 2.94 +/- 1.82% at the day of onset in comparison before. Serum TG and BUN, respectively, increased by 3.8 +/- 1.3 mg/dl and 3.7 +/- 2.0 mg/dl. Feeding cows a low-starch diet and additional corn-silage may induce a transient increase in blood TG, BUN and milk fat, which may contribute to the occurrence of white diarrhea in calves.  相似文献

Values of the acid base balance were examined in both venous and arterial blood of healthy calves (n = 6) of the Slovak Spotted breed aged, 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, and 24 weeks, respectively. Until week 4 of age the animals were fed milk only, until the age of 9 weeks a milk-roughage transition fodder and from week 10 on they were given classical herbage. Blood samples were taken from the V. jugularis and A. carotis communis or A. axillaris, respectively. The results achieved were corrected to a body temperature of 39 degrees C. During the examination period the following values were stated for both arterial and venous blood: actual acidity (pH) 7.391 +/- 0.014 and 7.362 +/- 0.013 logmolc, pCO2 6.35 +/- 0.15 and 7.35 +/- 0.11 kPa, HCO3-28.38 +/- 1.42 and 30.32 +/- 1.02 mmol. l(-1), ABE 3.57 +/- 1.44 and 4.34 +/- 1.09 mmol. l(-1); pO2 12.63 +/- 1.15 and 5.21 +/- 0.73 kPa, SAT 95.8 +/- 1.03 and 61.2 +/- 9.59%, respectively. A gradual increase in most indices of the acid base balance could be stated both in arterial and venous blood. The trends either revealed a parallel increase (HCO3-, pH) or they were more pronounced either in venous blood (SAT) or in arterial blood (ABE, pO2). Some trends were almost balanced (pCO2 and pO2 in venous blood and SAT and pCO2 in arterial blood). Thus pH, pO2 and SAT indices of the acid base balance were higher in arterial blood as compared to venous blood while pCO2, HCO3- and ABE values were higher in venous blood.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effects of an administration of the Zindep inj. preparation (Biotika) were evaluated in pregnant dairy cows as exerted on specific weight, total protein (TP) content, total immunoglobulin (IgC) and albumin (ALB) contents in colostrum. These parameters were also followed: calf's health, live weight, leucocyte (Lc) counts, T-lymphocyte (T-Ly) counts, contents of TPs, IgCs and ALBs in the blood serum of calves. Zinc concentrations were determined in colostrum, milk and calf blood serum. Our observations included 16 dairy cows in the seventh month of pregnancy in the second lactation and their calves in the winter feeding season. Eight experimental dairy cows were treated with the Zindep preparation in form of an injection to the neck muscles at a dose of 3 mg Zn/kg live weight in the mid-seventh month of pregnancy. Blood samples were taken from v. jugularis from all calves before their first drinking, on days 5, 15 and 30 of age. Colostrum, and/or milk samples were obtained by drawing of the colostrum or milk from the udder quarters within 60 minutes after parturition, on days 5 and 15 of lactation. Zn levels at birth were 16.48 +/- 2.67 mumol/l in experimental calves and 13.84 +/- 3.19 mumol/l in control calves. Zincaemia decreased slightly in both groups on days 5 and 15 of age, but it was insignificantly higher in calves coming from Zindep-treated dairy cows. Zn levels in the blood serum on the 30th day of age were 18.45 +/- 2.44 mumol/l in experimental animals and 15.73 +/- 3.11 mumol/l in control animals. Zn content in the colostrum of experimental cows was 2.40 +/- 0.42 mg/l and in the control it was 1088 +/- 0.52 mg/l (P < 0.05). On day 5 of lactation, Zn amounts in the milk of experimental dairy cows decreased to 0.95 +/- 0.12 mg/l and to 0.76 +/- 0.10 mg/l in the control (P < 0.01). Zn levels in the milk of experimental cows on day 15 of lactation were 0.95 +/- 0.13 mg/l and in the milk of control group they were 0.82 +/- 0.14 mg/l. Colostrum specific weight from zinc-treated cows was 1,067.86 +/- 0.75 g/cm3 and 1,056.8 +/- 13.53 g/cm3 in the control. The aim of this study was to determine whether venous blood samples can be used as an alternative to arterial samples in calves with respiratory problems and healthy calves. Jugular vein and ventral coccygeal artery were used to compare blood gas values. Sampling of the jugular vein followed soon after sampling of the ventral coccygeal artery in healthy calves (group I) and calves with respiratory problems (group II). Mean values of arterial blood for pH, pCO2, HCO3act in healthy calves were 7.475 +/- 0.004, 4.84 +/- 0.2 kPa, 28.45 +/- 1.30 mmol/L compared with venous samples, 7.442 +/- 0.006, 6 +/- 0.3 kPa, 30.93 +/- 1.36 mmol/L, respectively. In group II, these parameters were 7.414 +/- 0.01, 5.93 +/- 0.3, 27.73 +/- 1.96 mmol/L for arterial blood and 7.398 +/- 0.008, 6.85 +/- 0.2 kPa, 29.77 +/- 1.91 mmol/L for venous blood, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between arterial and venous pH, HCO3act, Be(ecf), ctCO2 values with the exception of pCO2 (P = 0.001) in group II. In group I, correlation (r2) between arterial and venous blood pH, pCO2, HCO3act were 84.5%, 87.5%, 95.7%, respectively compared with the same parameters in group II, 80.8%, 77.1%, 70.3%. In conclusion, venous blood gas values can predict arterial blood gas values of pH, pCO2 and HCO3ecf, Be(ecf) and ctCO2- for healthy calves but only pH values in calves with acute respiratory problems (r2 value>80%).  相似文献

Three hundred bucket-fed diarrhoeic calves up to the age of 21 days were used to investigate the degree in which D-lactic acid contributes to metabolic acidosis in bucket-fed calves with naturally acquired neonatal diarrhoea. Fifty-five percent of all diarrhoeic calves had serum D-lactate concentrations higher than 3 mmol/l. Mean (+/-SD) D-lactate values were 5.7 mmol/l (+/-5.3, median: 4.1 mmol/l). D-lactate values were distributed over the entire range of detected values from 0 to 17.8 mmol/l in calves with base excess of -10 to -25 mmol/l. Serum D-lactate concentration was higher in patients with ruminal acidosis (6.6 +/- 5.2 mmol/l; median: 5.9 mmol/l) than in those with physiological rumen pH (5.3 +/- 5.4 mmol/l; median: 3.7 mmol/l). There was no evidence of a correlation (r = 0.051) between the serum levels of D-lactate and creatinine (as an indicator of dehydration). D-lactate was correlated significantly with both base excess (r = -0.685) and anion gap (r = 0.647). The proportion of cured patients was not significantly different between the groups with elevated (>3 mmol/l) and normal serum D-lactate concentrations. This study shows that hyper-D-lactataemia occurs frequently in diarrhoeic calves, has no impact on prognosis but may contribute to the clinical picture associated with metabolic acidosis in these animals.  相似文献

In depressed calves (modified APGAR score 4-6) there is at birth an evident combined respiratory-metabolic acidosis (pH = 7.082 +/- 0.175; pCO2 = 73.3 +/- 26.8 mm Hg; BE = -10.6 +/- 7.2 mmol/l). The metabolic adaptation is completed after 6 hours, the respiratory acidosis is present up to 24 hours after delivery. In comparison to normal calves there are significant deviations in pH-values, base excess standard bicarbonate and actual bicarbonate during the whole investigation time. The carbon dioxide tensions of the depressed calves are at birth similar to those of normal calves, but in the following hours they are significantly higher. A definite relationship can be demonstrated between the 1 minute APGAR score and pH-value, base excess, standard bicarbonate and actual bicarbonate. Oxygen tension, oxygen saturation and carbon dioxide do not correlate with the clinical condition.  相似文献

In the experiment the influence of an elevated oral cobalt supply (Co content in the ration 0.27 mg Co/kg DM; supplement of 0.14 mg Co/kg DM as CoSO(4)) to pregnant dairy cows on the vitamin B(12) concentration in milk, colostrum and vitamin B(12) status of their calves was tested in comparison with unsupplemented controls (0.13 mg Co/kg DM). While there was no significant difference in vitamin B(12) concentration in the at 70th day of lactation (start of the experiment; 3.77 +/- 1.41 vs. 3.66 +/- 1.03 ng/ml) and 290th day of lactation (almost drying off; 4.75 +/- 3.05 vs. 4.44 +/- 0.96 ng/ml), cobalamin concentration in the milk colostrum showed a tendency towards a higher cobalt content in the ration of the supplemented cows in comparison with the controls (21.0 +/- 8.4 vs. 16.7 +/- 11.9 ng/ml). Differences in the vitamin B(12) concentration in the serum of the newborn calves before and after ingestion of colostrum were not detected. From these results it can be concluded that cobalt content of 0.13 mg Co/kg DM in the ration based on wilted grass silage seems to be sufficient for pregnant dairy cows.  相似文献

The objective of this prospective study was to elucidate whether amounts of bicarbonate needed for correction of acidosis and normalization of clinical signs are influenced by blood D-lactate concentrations in calves with diarrhoea. In 73 calves up to 3 weeks old with acute diarrhoea and base excess values below -10 mmol/l correction of acidosis was carried out within 3.5-h by intravenous administration of an amount of sodium bicarbonate which was calculated using the formula: HCO (mmol) = body mass (kg) x base deficit (mmol/l) x 0.6 (l/kg). Clinical signs, venous base excess, and plasma D-lactate concentrations were monitored immediately following admission, following correction of acidosis at 4 h and 24 h after admission. The base excess and plasma D-lactate concentrations throughout the study were -17.8 +/- 4.0, -0.4 +/- 0.4, -3.0 +/- 5.5 mmol/l (base excess), and 10.0 +/- 4.9, 9.8 +/- 4.8, 5.4 +/- 3.4 mmol/l (D-lactate) for the three times of examination. Metabolic acidosis was not corrected in more than half of the calves (n = 43) by the calculated amount of bicarbonate, whereas the risk of failure to correct acidosis increases with D-lactate concentrations. The study shows that calves with elevated D-lactate concentrations do not need additional specific therapy, as D-lactate concentrations regularly fall following correction of acidosis and restitution of body fluid volume, for reasons that remain unclear. However, calves with distinct changes in posture and demeanour need higher doses of bicarbonate than calculated with the factor of 0.6 in the formula mentioned above probably because of D-hyperlactataemia.  相似文献

Three groups of beef cow and calf pairs were studied to determine plasma vitamin E and blood selenium (Se) concentrations of calves at 1 month old. Group 1 was managed on irrigated pasture and calves received no Se/vitamin E injections at birth. Group 2 was managed on irrigated pasture, and the calves were injected with Se/vitamin E at birth. Group 3 was managed on dry foothill grasslands, and these cows were supplemented with 56.3 mg vitamin E and 3 mg Se daily, and the calves received a Se/vitamin E injection at birth. The plasma concentration of vitamin E in group 1 and 2 cows (9.5 +/- 1.24 and 8.43 +/- 1.0 microg/ml, respectively) was significantly higher than that of the group 3 cows (2.28 +/- 0.42 microg/ml; P < 0.05). The blood Se concentrations in group 3 cows (169 +/- 37 ng/ml) were significantly higher than those in group 1 and 2 cows (36.4 +/- 15.9 and 31.1 +/- 12.5 ng/ml, respectively; P < 0.05). Calf Se was highly correlated to cow Se (r = 0.965), and calf vitamin E was moderately correlated to cow vitamin E (r = 0.605). Calf vitamin E concentrations were consistently lower than cow vitamin E concentrations, and many values would be considered deficient.  相似文献

Six anaemic and six healthy pigs were exercised for ten minutes on a belt moving at 78 m/min. Initial blood glucose values in healthy pigs averaged 71.2 mg/100 ml, and they changed very little during and after exercise. Initial values were similar in anaemic pigs (70.7 mg/100 ml), but they increased continuously, during exercise, reaching a peak of 157.4 mg/100 ml one minute after the end of exercise. Blood lactic acid increased from 1152 to 2463 mmol/litre in healthy pigs during the first minute of exercise, and then fell gradually. In anaemic pigs it increased from 1652 to 8478 mmol/l during the ten minutes of exercise, and then fell gradually. Correlations between lactic acid and haemoglobin content, between rectal temperature and Hb, and between lactic acid and changes in rectal temperature were discussed.  相似文献

A trial was conducted with 16 cows divided into control and test group (eight cows in either); since day 57.6 +/- 21.1 before parturition, test cows were given feed rations for 107 days which contained 16.0 kg clover-grass silage a day, treated with 3 l acrylic acid per t ensiled matter. Control group of cows was administered feed rations containing silage treated with 4 l formic acid per 1 t ensiled matter from day 55.5 +/- 21.9. In the blood (plasma) of test cows the alkaline phosphatase activity was increasing gradually, in the time after parturition a tendency of lower glucose (P 0.05 to 0.01), thyroxine and triiodothyronine concentrations was observed, and the phagocytal activity of leucocytes and its index decreased. The levels of ketone bodies and aspartate aminotransferase activity were found to be higher. In this period in urine the pH value and net acid-base output were lower, while the inorganic phosphorus concentration was higher. No difference were observed in colostrum density, liveweight of born calves and in the target metabolic parameters in the blood (plasma) of calves. In the 30-day period of investigation the cows of test group gave an average daily milk yield lower by 1.5 l (in comparison with control cows). The residues of acrylic acid (method sensitivity of 1.0 mg acrylic acid in 1 l sample) were not detected in their colostrum and milk.  相似文献

On 32 calves (age 3 to 14 days) with spontaneously occurring diarrhoea, the following investigations were carried out: Regular examination of serum bile acid concentrations, collection of the entire faeces with determination of bile acid concentrations, as well as microbiological examinations. Six clinically healthy calves served as control group. In addition, bile acids in bile were determined in 16 other calves of the same age group and in 6 beef bulls. There was no significant influence of daytime or feed intake on serum bile acid concentration in diarrhoeic or healthy calves. Possibly due to the low concentrations of bile acids in the bile of young calves (4.8 +/- 3.7 mmol/l, compared to 57 +/- 13 mmol/l in the bulls), the concentrations in faeces were also rather low (control group 623 +/- 92, calves with diarrhoea 318 +/- 277, after diarrhoea. 794 +/- 935 mumol/kg). Most of it was cholic acid, whereas only traces of desoxycholic acid were found. In spite of the comparatively low concentrations of fecal bile acids, the diarrhoeic calves excreted larger amounts of bile acids than the healthy calves (12.7 +/- 13.5 vs. 1.4 +/- 0.8 mumol/kg), but this was independent of the type of enteropathogen or pathogen combinations which were detected. There were no indications for a direct influence of the diarrhoea by bile acids. However, through enteral bile acid losses, profuse diarrhoea lasting several days can cause a reduction in the total bile acid pool.  相似文献

Using high pressure liquid chromatography the serum concentration of vitamin E was measured in dairy cows fed either hay or silage as their main roughage, in calves fed milk-replacer, and in young intensively fed bulls. The concentrates fed to the cows, calves and bulls were supplemented with 5–10, 25 and 5–10 mg DL-α-tocopheryl acetate per kg, respectively, and the milk-replacer for the calves was supplemented with 50 mg DL-α-tooopheryl acetate per kg powder. Cows fed silage as their main roughage had higher serum vitamin E concentrations (: 3.8–5.2 mg/l) than cows fed only hay (: 2.5–4.1 mg/1). Lactating cows had higher vitamin E concentrations than dry cows (: 4.1–5.2 and 2.5–3.8 mg/l, respectively) and calves and bulls had much lower vitamin E concentrations (: 1.4 and 1.2 mg/l, respectively) than cows. Thirty per cent of the calves and 41 % of the bulls had serum vitamin E concentrations less than 1.0 mg/l, suggesting that in these animals the conventional level of supplementation of feeds with DL-α-tocopheryl acetate in Sweden is probably inadequate for the prevention of nutritional muscular degeneration and other negative effects.  相似文献

The respiratory component PvCO2 of acid-base-status was observed in n = 36 calves (age: x +/- s = 8.7 +/- 5.0 d) with neonatal diarrhea and an acidosis (venous blood-pH: < 7.30; x +/- s = 7.08 +/- 0.15). In n = 10 (28%) calves with a severe metabolic acidosis (pH: x +/- s = 7.03 +/- 0.12; BE: x +/- s = -22.1 +/- 5.3 mmol/l) the PvCO2 was decreased < 5.3 kPa (x +/- s = 4.5 +/- 0.5 kPa) and showed a distinct respiratory compensation. A PvCO2 between 5.3-6.7 kPa (x +/- s = 6.0 +/- 0.4 kPa) was observed in n = 16 (44%) acidotic calves (pH: x +/- s = 7.11 +/- 0.13; BE: x +/- s = -15.2 +/- 7.4 mmol/l). These n = 26 (72%) calves showed a simple metabolic acidosis which is well known for calves with neonatal diarrhea. The remaining n = 10 (28%) calves showed an increase of the PvCO2 > 6.7 kPa (x +/- s = 8.0 +/- 1.5 kPa). These animals had a mixed respiratory-metabolic acidosis (pH: x +/- s = 7.08 +/- 0.20; BE: x +/- s = -13.9 +/- 10.3 mmol/l), as the decrease of the pH could not be determined by the decreased metabolic component HCO3- of acid-base-status alone. Calves which died during hospitalization and calves with a PvCO2 > 6.7 kPa tended to be younger and showed partially significant lower values for the parameters of oxygen-supply PvO2 and SvO2. Lactate was significantly higher in dying calves but not in calves with a mixed acidosis which on the other hand were more dehydrated. The functional capacity of respiratory compensation of acidotic disorders in the calves studied promised to be almost the same as in dog and man. One reason for the failure of respiratory compensation in some calves could be a more severe hypovolemia. With the use of "venous hypoxemia" (decrease PvO2 and decrease SvO2) the detection of tissue hypoxia was easier than with lactate concentration.  相似文献

The effects of feeding supplementary dietary copper to a herd of 400 beef cows, were studied over a two year period. In the first year of the trial, the calves showed clinical signs of copper deficiency. There was improved growth following subcutaneous injection of copper ethylenediamine tetraacetate, and the treated calves had a 2.8% increase in adjusted weaning weights. In the second year of the trial pregnant cows were fed a basal ration of bromegrass silage, barley and minerals over the winter feeding period. The feed was supplemented with copper so that half received 5.5 mg/kg of copper on a dry matter basis and half 40 mg/kg. Calving occurred in the spring and half the calves were treated with injectable copper at birth and again at 12 weeks of age. There was no evidence of copper deficiency in the calves and there was no effect of high level copper supplementation on calf birth weight, or neutrophil candidacidal activity. Susceptibility to diarrhea varied in a complex fashion; morbidity was lowest in calves born to dams fed supplementary copper and highest in calves born to supplemented dams and injected with copper at birth. The cows and calves grazed the same copper deficient pasture over the summer. The average daily gain for calves born to supplemented cows was 0.999 +/- 0.010 kg/day (x +/- SEM) which was significantly greater than the 0.972 +/- 0.009 kg/day for calves from nonsupplemented dams (p = 0.044). The benefit of copper supplementation on 200 day weaning weight was estimated at 4.8 kg. Evidence of copper deficiency was seen when a herd test showed mean serum levels below 9 mumol/L and liver values below 0.09 mmol/kg wet matter.  相似文献

The effects of increasing fetal numbers and their distribution between the left and right uterine horns on calf survival, calf BW at birth and weaning, gestation length, dystocia, and calf sex ratio were evaluated for single (n = 1,587), twin (n = 2,440), and triplet calves (n = 147) born to primiparous and multiparous females in the Twinner population at the US Meat Animal Research Center between 1994 and 2004. Cattle were distributed equally between the spring and fall breeding seasons. Fetal number and distribution in utero were determined by real-time ultrasonography at 40 to 70 d postbreeding. For cows and heifers combined, number of calves per parturition increased from 1.34 in 1994 to 1.56 in 2004. Gestation length was 6.8 d shorter (P < 0.01) for twins compared with singles (277.5 +/- 0.2 vs. 284.3 +/- 0.2 d) and 12.7 d shorter for triplets (271.6 +/- 0.8 d). Survival and BW of individual calves at birth decreased (P < 0.01) but total calf BW per dam increased (P < 0.01) as fetal number increased from single to triplet births. Twins resulting from bilateral twin ovulations had increased (P < 0.01) survival and BW at birth, a longer (P < 0.01) gestation length, and less (P < 0.01) dystocia than twins resulting from unilateral twin ovulations. Calf survival and BW at birth were 97.2 +/- 0.3% and 48.0 +/- 0.1 kg for singles, 92.0 +/- 0.4% and 39.0 +/- 0.2 kg for bilateral twins, 83.2 +/- 0.4% and 36.7 +/- 0.2 kg for unilateral twins, 73.8 +/- 1.4% and 30.6 +/- 0.7 kg for bilateral triplets, and 51.9 +/- 3.2% and 31.7 +/- 1.6 kg for unilateral triplets. Birth weight of single calves increased by 0.51 kg/d for each additional day of gestation length vs. 0.38 kg/d for individual twins. Calf BW at birth increased (P < 0.01) with age of dam from 2 to 4 yr. Twin and triplet births had a greater (P < 0.01) incidence of dystocia than single births. The ratio of male:female calves (0.52:0.48) at birth was not affected by type of birth. Postnatal calf survival was similar for all 3 types of birth. Total progeny BW at weaning for single, twin, and triplet births was 217.7 +/- 2.5, 328.3 +/- 3.2, and 378.4 +/- 15.0 kg, respectively (P < 0.01). Although most bovine females have the uterine capacity to gestate twin calves, decreased survival and BW of unilateral twins and of all triplets indicate that their growth and development may have been compromised by uterine crowding.  相似文献

Digestive activities were studied in test calves (n = 12) in relation to age and feed intake. The calves were isolated after birth from adult cows. Since the 14th day of age, milk replacers were fed with concentrate feed mixture TG and alfalfa hay, i.e. the calves were in the period of plant feeding. The investigation lasted from the end of milk feeding (50th day) to the age of six months. Overall health condition was studied clinically. The characteristics of digestive activities studied in rumen fluid at weekly--monthly intervals were pH, ammonia content, total content of volatile fatty acids, content of particular volatile fatty acids, incidence and number of infusoria. At the age of 50 days, actual pH of rumen fluid was on the average 6.07 and it ranged from 5.84 to 6.76 in the next period. Ammonia content was the highest at the age of 50 days (21.49 mmol/l rumen fluid), then it dropped to 9.83 mmol/l rumen fluid at the age of 180 days. The average total concentration of volatile fatty acids (C2-C5) made 117.00 mmol/l during the first examination, it increased to 132.98 mmol/l at the age of 84 days, and it dropped to 94.16 mmol/l rumen fluid at the age of six months. A similar tendency was found in the volatile fatty acids. The infusoria were found out only at the age of 120 days--their numbers were 155 000 per ml; at the age of 180 days their numbers rose to 368 000 per ml rumen fluid. Twelve anestrous, postpartum beef cows were used to determine the effect of calf removal on the effect of naloxone on serum luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations. On d 1, six cows were injected iv with saline and six with 200 mg naloxone dissolved in saline. Blood samples were taken at 15-min intervals for 2 h before and 2 h after naloxone or saline administration. At the beginning of blood sampling, calves were removed from three cows in each treatment. At 48 h after calf removal (d 3), all cows were injected iv with 200 mg naloxone and blood samples were collected as on d 1. On d 1, naloxone treatment increased (P less than .01) serum LH concentrations from 1.2 +/- .3 ng/ml at time 0 to 4.3 +/- .6 ng/ml and 4.7 +/- .8 ng/ml at 15 and 30 min, respectively. Injection of saline had no effect on serum LH concentrations. Forty-eight-hour calf removal increased (P less than .01) serum LH concentrations in five of six cows (1.7 +/- .8 vs 4.4 +/- 1.2 ng/ml). Naloxone treatment failed to increase serum LH concentrations in these cows. Injection of naloxone increased (P less than .01) serum LH concentrations in the one cow that did not exhibit an LH increase after calf removal and in six cows whose calves were not removed (1.4 +/- .2 vs 4.4 +/- .5 ng/ml). The present study provides additional evidence that endogenous opioids regulate LH in the postpartum beef cow. We hypothesize that suckling stimulates an opioid inhibition of LH secretion and removal of the suckling stimulus removes the opioid inhibitory tone.  相似文献
