Successful laparoscopic surgery for a uterine leiomyoma in a mare

Leiomyomas are the most common of uterine tumours in mares but large tumours are rare. A case with a 15 cm uterine leiomyoma diagnosed by rectal palpation and ultrasound examinations with apparent adverse effects on fertility is reported. Management of the case was by hand assisted laparoscopic tumour removal and unilateral ovariectomy. Complications included post operative pain, tachycardia and wound infection. The mare was confirmed to be in foal after her first cover post surgery.     

Radiation treatment for thymoma in a dog

A 10-year-old Toy Poodle was admitted for evaluation of a chronic cough caused by a cranial mediastinal mass. The mass was diagnosed, by needle biopsy, as a thymoma. Detection of serum acetylcholine receptor antibodies suggested that the dog had subclinical myasthenia gravis. The dog underwent orthovoltage radiation treatment, which resulted in an approximate 60% reduction in tumor mass and freedom from clinical signs for 6 months. Concurrent use of prednisolone may have been associated with disappearance of the acetylcholine receptor antibodies.     

Dacryocystomaxillorhinostomy for chronic dacryocystitis in a dog

A 10-year-old female spayed Vizsla had intermittent mucoid ocular discharge from the right eye for 7 years. History, clinical findings, imaging studies, and culture and histopathology results confirmed chronic dacryocystitis with granuloma. A dacryocystomaxillorhinostomy was performed to preserve the functional portions of the nasolacrimal system remaining in this patient, as well as to promote healing of the lacrimal sac granuloma and secondary infection. Complete resolution of the clinical abnormalities was achieved, and the dog remains healthy 3 years postoperatively.     

Amputation for histiocytic sarcoma in a cat

A 9-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat presented with a skin lesion of the left tarsus. The lesion was biopsied and, based on the microscopic appearance and immunohistochemical characteristics, histiocytic sarcoma was diagnosed. Amputation was performed with improved demeanor seen postoperatively. However, between 44 and 60 days following the surgery, relapse of skin lesions appeared in multiple locations, including at the previous amputation site, and euthanasia was elected. This is the first report of a histiocytic sarcoma treated with amputation in a cat.     

Phacofragmentation for morgagnian cataract in a horse

A 3‐year‐old Paint gelding was presented for sudden onset of cataract affecting the right eye. Ophthalmic examination revealed subtle to mild microphthalmia and a mature cataract affecting the right globe. The right eye was treated with an antibiotic‐corticosteroid ophthalmic ointment and phacofragmentation was recommended. On re‐examination 5 months later, resorption of the cortex of the right lens and a morgagnian cataract were evident. The nucleus was positioned ventronasally in the lens capsule. The right eye had light perception, and a menace response was present. Examination of the right fundus via binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy was not possible. Ophthalmic ultrasonography revealed that the right globe was 4 mm shorter in axial length when compared with the left globe. There was a marked reduction in the size of the right lens vs. the left lens, and the presence of a moderate amount of hyperechoic debris was identified within the vitreal compartment of the right globe. Phacofragmentation, irrigation and aspiration of the morgagnian cataract and an anterior vitrectomy were performed. On postoperative examination, the eye was comfortable and a menace response was present. The horse regained useful vision and continues to have a comfortable, visual eye 7 months postoperatively.     

Electrohydraulic Lithotripsy for Treatment of a Cystic Calculus in a Mare

Electrohydraulic lithotripsy performed through a nephroscope was used to fragment an ammonium urate, triple phosphate calculus in a mare. Calculus fragments were lavaged from the bladder. The mare recovered uneventfully and returned to work on the eighth postoperative day.     

Fluorouracil as a treatment for corneal papilloma in a Malayan tapir

A 26-year-old, wild caught, male Malayan tapir at the Miami Metrozoo with bilateral corneal papillomas was serially immobilized and given subconjunctival injections of fluorouracil. Over the course of 17 weeks five bilateral injections of 25 mg fluorouracil were given. This treatment caused regression of the corneal lesions as evidenced by decreased lesion diameter, decreased corneal vascularity, increased corneal clarity, and improved visual function. No adverse drug effects were observed.     

Surgical stapling for repair of a rectal tear in a horse

A grade-4 rectal tear in a mare was successfully repaired per rectum, using a surgical stapling device. The mare had only minor postoperative complications. This technique has some advantages over previously described procedures, but should be reserved for use in selected cases.     

Use of a Baerveldt gonioimplant for secondary glaucoma in a horse

This case report describes the surgical placement of a Baerveldt glaucoma shunt in the right eye of a 14‐year‐old Arabian gelding. The glaucomatous right eye was refractory to aggressive medical and repeated surgical therapies yet maintained functional vision. Despite the need for intensive post operative management and continued daily topical therapy, shunt placement surgery was successful at maintaining normotension and vision for a period of 402 days. This is the first report of long‐term successful glaucoma filtration surgery in this species. Further studies are warranted to evaluate long‐term success of glaucoma shunt placement in equine glaucoma cases.     

Unilateral nephrectomy as a treatment for renal trauma in a foal

A 2-day-old Warmblood colt foal was referred for evaluation of progressive abdominal distension and lethargy. Haemoperitoneum was diagnosed and a ventral midline laparotomy revealed capsular rupture, sub capsular haematoma and haemorrhage of the left kidney. Unilateral nephrectomy was performed and the foal recovered uneventfully, with no reported complications 1 year later.     

Shockwave therapy for treatment of a burn injury in a horse

This article describes a horse that sustained burn injury wounds over the back extending from the withers to the tail head as a result of a fire in a trailer. The extensive nature of the burn prompted investigation into treatment options which may stimulate healing. Based on current applications in human medicine, shockwave therapy was administered. This horse recovered from a substantial burn injury. Shockwave therapy may be a viable supplemental option for treating burn injuries in the horse, with no noted adverse effects.     

Establishment of a potency test by ELISA for a rabies vaccine for animal use in Japan

The ELISA we developed was able to determine the antigen content and was suitable for a potency test, and we described a relative potency assay method which determines the potency of test vaccines by comparing the ELISA value of a test vaccine to that of a reference vaccine. In the present study, we standardized the reference vaccine used for determining the potencies of test vaccines, and established a potency test by ELISA. We evaluated the proposed reference vaccine by the neutralizing antibody responses in dogs after vaccination, by the challenge protection test in guinea pigs (GP potency test), which is the earlier official potency test used in Japan, and by the NIH potency test, which is widely used throughout the world. The results showed that a 4-fold dilution of the proposed reference vaccine induced sufficient immunity in dogs. A 3-fold dilution of the proposed reference vaccine passed the GP potency test. The international units (IU) calibrated by the NIH potency test were 3.7 IU/dose. From the results and the WHO recommendation that veterinary rabies vaccines should have a potency of at least 1.0 IU/dose, we determined to dilute the proposed reference vaccine by 3 fold and regarded it as the reference vaccine. Finally, we confirmed that there is a good agreement between the results of the potency test by ELISA and the results of the GP potency test. The establishment of the potency test by ELISA has made it possible to monitor the potency in the production process and has contributed to the stable production of the vaccine.
