Psittacines and other companion avian species often develop wounds requiring some form of medical or surgical therapy. Advancing technology in the field of wound care and management continues to evolve for use by the veterinary clinician. Although not all wounds can be successfully treated, many can be reduced and minimized with therapy. Consideration of the overall health, management, and nutrition of the avian patient will also aid in wound management. The avian patient with normal immune function and optimal nutrition will have improved wound healing compared with an immunocompromized or malnourished patient. The duration of treatment and potential stress of the wound-management program should also be taken into consideration when selecting a treatment program for the avian patient.  相似文献

Successful wound management requires appropriate evaluation of the wound at the time of initial physical examination, an all throughout the healing process. Factors affecting wound healing need to be identified though a complete patient history and addressed to ensure proper healing. The clinician must have current knowledge of topical medications and bandages available and their clinical applications according to the stage of healing. It is essential to remember that wounds are painful; therefore, analgesics should be administered to render the animal pain-free during wound cleaning, debridement, bandaging, and surgical procedures.  相似文献

Our understanding into the healing response of reptile wounds is in its infancy. To date, many of the methods we have used have been adopted from human, mammalian, or avian species, with varying success. Future research should focus on the development of methods to improve our management of contaminated wounds, minimize the negative inflammatory responses occurring in a wound, and shorten wound-healing time.  相似文献

The normal structure and function of the piscine integument reflects the adaptation of the organism to the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the aquatic environment, and the natural history of the organism. Because of the intimate contact of fish with the environment, cutaneous disease is relatively more common in fish than in terrestrial vertebrates and is one of the primary disease conditions presented to the aquatic animal practitioner. However, cutaneous lesions are generally nonspecific and may be indicative of disease that is restricted to the integument or a manifestation of systemic disease. Regardless, a gross and microscopic examination of the integument is simple to perform, but is highly diagnostic and should always be included in the routine diagnostic effort of the aquatic animal practitioner, especially since various ancillary diagnostic procedures are either not practical or lack predictive value in fish. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of normal cutaneous biology prior to consideration of specific cutaneous diseases in fish.  相似文献

This article will delve into examination and wound assessment along with therapeutic stabilization of wounded nonpsittacine birds. Psychopharmacology has become a popular, and sometimes mandatory addition to treatment regimes for canine and feline patients with behavioural problems; however, clients and practitioners should be dissuaded that behavioural drugs are 'quick fixes'. Veterinarians should only prescribe psychotropic medication when they have a specific idea of how the mechanism of action of the drug will affect the target behaviours associated with a specific diagnosis. The diagnosis must be treated rather than non-specific signs. Newer psychotropic medications demonstrate the extent to which truly abnormal behaviours are dysfunctions of neurochemistry; synaptic or cellular metabolism; or genetic encoding and 'learning', or LTP, hence there is a clear role for the interaction of neuropharmacology and behavioural and environmental modification.Future advances in treatment in behavioural medicine will be pharmacological and neurophysiological. As the field of behavioural medicine expands, its paradigm will enlarge to include combination therapy and the implementation of neuropharmacological intervention as a diagnostic tool. At present, the veterinary practitioner can effectively aid many common behavioural problems using extant drugs to treat animals with true behavioural pathology.Rational pharmacological therapy requires complete medical and behavioural histories, requisite laboratory work, complete client understanding and compliance, and an honest and ongoing dialogue between the client and veterinarian that includes frequent follow-ups and re-examinations. Radiologic and gross anatomic evaluation of bone healing in the dog.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Bone healing associated with 3 techniques of midshaft femoral fracture fixation in 36 young adult Beagle-type dogs was evaluated in radiographic and gross pathoanatomic studies. A serrated transverse fracture was surgically and aseptically created on the midshaft of either the left or the right femur of each dog. The fixation devices used were intramedullary (IM) pin, IM pin and 1/2 Kirschner device, and tension bone plates. The radiographic evaluation was done in series. The first radiographs were taken during surgery. Radiographs were then taken immediately after surgery, to record the status of reduction, alignment, and fixation. Radiographs were taken at the 4th and 10th postoperative weeks, to monitor healing. All dogs were euthanatized at the 10th week. Both the normal femur and the healing femur were removed from all dogs, all soft tissue was removed from the bone, and each femur was examined grossly. Each type of fixation was associated with a distinct mode of osteogenesis. Bony union and clinical union (that stage in the healing process when fixation can be removed) were defined as a successful conclusion to each case. Malunion and nonunion were defined as unsuccessful conclusions. Delayed union was defined as neither successful nor unsuccessful. The IM pin cases had a 64.2% success rate and a 14.2% failure rate. The IM pin and 1/2 Kirschner cases had a 100% success rate. The bone plate cases were 91% successful, with 0% failure. A problem identified with IM pinning was axial rotation (6 of 14 or 42% of the cases). It was concluded that IM pins should not be used alone for the fixation of femoral fractures in adult dogs.  相似文献

Osteosarcoma (OSA) is the most common primary bone tumor diagnosed in dogs. Our understanding of the risk factors and genetic changes in canine OSA patients is growing, but specific, innovative therapeutic strategies are slow in coming. Appendicular skeletal osteosarcoma, the most frequent form of this disease, is typically seen in large to giant breeds, with males being overrepresented in most reports. Axial skeletal OSA is less common than appendicular OSA, but the biologic behavior of the disease is equally aggressive in all skeletal sites except for the mandible. Though the current standard of care for dogs with osteosarcoma remains surgical resection of the affected site, followed by chemotherapy with either a platinum- (cisplatin or carboplatin) or doxorubicin-based protocol, novel therapies are being actively investigated.  相似文献

Bacteria are ubiquitous in nature. Fish are constantly exposed to bacteria, and usually only succumb to an infection after having been exposed to prolonged periods of stress. Before making a diagnosis of a bacterial disease, it is necessary to eliminate the possibility of environmental or parasitic problems. Environmental factors may act as stressors and can predispose a fish to bacterial disease while affecting the fish simultaneously. Clinical signs caused by the various bacterial pathogens are very similar. Therefore, to make a definitive bacterial diagnosis, it is necessary to culture and identify the organisms involved.  相似文献
