Single neurons in the midbrain tegmentum of rats showed clear discriminatory responses to three tones announcing either food or water or no reinforcement. Subjects were required to press a single lever and remain motionless for 2 seconds during which time unit activity from several brain sites was recorded. One of the tones, randomly designated, was sounded halfway through this period. Manipulation of drive states revealed that the highest activity was associated with tones announcing the reinforcement for which the animal was most strongly motivated. Thus, from a hungry animal sustained or increased firing rates were elicited by a " food" tone and differentially lowered rates by the other tones.  相似文献

Airborne sound and substrate vibration each elicit electrical responses below the surface of the tectum in species of three families of snakes. Tones of 50 to 1000 hertz evoke responses independently of substrate vibration. Sensitivity to locally applied sound is present over much of the body surface. This sensitivity is attributed to the auditory nerve, because it is not altered by spinal section but is eliminated by destruction of the inner ear.  相似文献

This paper presents the methodology to design and integrate a liquid crystal tunable filter (LCTF) based shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectral imaging system. The system consisted of an LCTF-based SWIR spectral imager, an illumination unit, a frame grabber, and a computer with the data acquisition software. The spectral imager included an InGaAs camera (320 × 256 pixels), an SWIR lens (50 mm, F/1.4), and an LCTF (20 mm aperture). Four multifaceted reflector halogen lamps (35 W, 12 VDC) were used to build the illumination unit. The system was integrated by a LabVIEW program for data acquisition. It can capture hyperspectral or multispectral images of the test object in the spectral range of 900–1700 nm. The system was validated by differentiating sugar from wheat flour, and water from 95% ethanol. The results showed that the system can distinguish these materials in both spectral and spatial domains. This SWIR spectral imaging system could be a potential useful tool for nondestructive inspection of food quality and safety.  相似文献

The hypoglossal motor neurons that innervate the vocal organ (syrinx) of the male zebra finch show a selective, long-latency (50-millisecond) response to sound. This response is eliminated by lesions to forebrain song-control nuclei. Different song syllables elicit a response from different syringeal motor neurons. Conspecific vocalizations may therefore be perceived as members of a set of vocal gestures and thus distinct from other environmental sounds. This hypothesis is an avian parallel to the motor theory of speech perception in humans.  相似文献
