Surface soil (0–15 cm) and foliar samples of wheat, rice, sugarcane, and cotton crops growing in eight intensively cultivated soil series of India were collected from farmers' fields during 2004 and 2005. Analysis of soil and leaf samples indicated widespread potassium (K) deficiency in soils and crops. Potassium deficiency in wheat growing in Lukhi series (Udic Ustocrept) and Akbarpur series (Udic Haplustulf) and in cotton growing in Typic Torrifluvent were comparable to 1N ammonium acetate (NH4OAc)–K (available K) soil test values. Rice cultivated on Udic Ustocrept soils in summer monsoon season showed relatively less K deficiency in comparison to winter wheat, and K deficiency in growing rice did not match 1N NH4OAc‐K soil test values. In the Khatki series, K deficiency in sugarcane was much less than 1N NH4OAc‐K soil test values. In the Arsia series (Typic Haplustert), despite the high 1N NH4OAc‐K status of soils, K deficiency in growing wheat was observed.  相似文献

Abstract

Various soil tests are used to estimate phosphorus (P) availability for both crop uptake and potential loss to water. Conversion equations may provide a basis for comparison between different tests and regions, although the extent to which information can be interchanged is uncertain. The objective was to determine and quantify relationships between specific soil test extractants for samples taken annually in October and February over 4 years from four sites in each of eight soil series under grassland. The extractants comprised Mehlich‐3, Morgan, Olsen, Bray‐1, lactate–acetate, CaCl2 (1∶2 and 1∶10 soil–solution ratios), and resin. The results showed distinct relationships for each soil series, for which individual lines regression models (different intercepts and slopes) were superior to a single conversion equation across all soils. The ensuing difference between soils was large and ranged from 1.9 to 8.0 and 9.2 to 15.6 mg kg?1 P for Morgan and Olsen, respectively, at 20 mg kg?1 Mehlich‐3 P. Generally, the environmentally oriented tests CaCl2 and resin correlated best with Morgan. Some soil‐specific limitations were also observed. CaCl2 was less efficient than Morgan, and Morgan less efficient than Mehlich‐3 on a high Fe–P soil derived from Ordovician‐shale diamicton, compared with the general trend for other soils. This finding suggests that further disparity may arise where evaluation of critical, or other, limits across regions involves even a limited sequence of tests.  相似文献

Abstract

Potassium (K) fixation and release in soil are important issues in long‐term sustainability of a cropping system. Fixation and release behavior of potassium were studied in the surface and subsurface horizons in five benchmark soil series, viz. Dhar, Gurdaspur, Naura, Ladowal, and Nabha, under rice–wheat cropping system in the Indo‐Gangetic plains of India. Potassium fixation was noted by adding six rates of K varying from 0 to 500 mg kg?1 soil in plastic beakers while K release characteristics were studied by repeated extractions with 1 M HNO3 and 1 M NH4OAc extractants. The initial status of K was satisfactory to adequate. Potassium fixation of added K increased with the rate of added K irrespective of soil mineralogy and soil depth. Soils rich in K (Ladowal and Nabha) fixed lower amounts (18–42%) of added K as compared to Gurdaspur, Dhar, and Naura (44.6–86.4%) soils low in K. The unit fertilizer requirement for unit increase in available K was more in low‐K soils. The study highlights the need for more studies on K fixation in relation to the associated minerals in a particular soil. Potassium‐release parameters such as total extractable K, total step K, and CR‐K varied widely in different soil series, indicating wide variation in the K‐supplying capacity of these soils. K released with 1 M NH4OAc extractant was 20–33% of that obtained with 1 M HNO3. Total extractable K using 1 M HNO3 varied from 213 to 528 mg kg?1 and NH4OAc‐extractable K ranged from 71 to 312 mg kg?1 soil in surface and subsurface layers of different soil series. The Ladowal and Nabha series showed higher rates of K release than Gurdaspur, Dhar, and Naura series, indicating their greater K‐supplying capacity.  相似文献

Abstract

Nonexchangeable potassium (K) release kinetics of six major benchmark soil series of India as affected by mineralogy of clay and silt fractions, soil depth and extraction media was investigated. The cumulative release of nonexchangeable K was greater in smectitic soils (353 mg K kg?1 at 0‐ to 15‐cm depth and 296 mg K kg?1 at 15‐ to 30‐cm depth, averaged for 2 soils and 3 extractants) than in illitic (151 mg K kg?1 at 0‐ to 15‐cm depth and 112 mg K kg?1 at 15‐ to 30‐cm depth) and kaolinitic (194 mg K kg?1 at 0‐ to 15‐cm depth and 167 mg K kg?1 at 15‐ to 30‐cm depth) soils. Surface soils exhibited larger cumulative K release in smectitic and illitic soils, whereas subsurface soils had larger K release in kaolinitic soils. Among the extractants, 0.01 M citric acid extracted a larger amount of nonexchangeable K followed by 0.01 M CaCl2 and 0.01 M HCl. The efficiency of citric acid extractant was greater in illitic soils than in smectitic and kaolinitic soils. Release kinetics of nonexchangeable K conformed fairly well to parabolic and first‐order kinetic models. The curve pattern of parabolic diffusion model suggested diffusion controlled kinetics in all the soils, with a characteristic initial fast rate up to 7 h followed by a slower rate. Greater nonexchangeable K release rates in smectitic soils, calculated from the first‐order equation (b=91.13×10?4 h?1), suggested that the layer edge and wedge zones and swelling nature of clay facilitated the easier exchange. In contrast to smectitic soils, higher release rate constants obtained from parabolic diffusion equation (b=39.23×10?3 h?1) in illitic soils revealed that the low amount of exchangeable K on clay surface and larger amount of interlayer K allowed greater diffusion gradients, thus justifying the better fit of first‐order kinetic equation in smectitic soils and parabolic diffusion equation in illitic soils.  相似文献

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a heavy feeder of nutrients and requires balanced and adequate supply of nutrients for optimum growth and yield. Information regarding soil nutrient status and leaf nutrient concentration is very much required for proper fertilizer application. Therefore, a survey was conducted for assessment of soil nutrient status and leaf nutrient concentration in 64 oil palm plantations in the state of Goa lying in the west coastal region of India. Soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon (OC), available potassium (K) (ammonium acetate-extractable K) (NH4OAc-K), available phosphorus (P) (Bray’s-P), exchangeable calcium (Ca) (Exch. Ca) and magnesium (Mg) (Exch. Mg), available sulphur (S) (calcium chloride-extractable S) (CaCl2-S), and hot water soluble boron (B) (HWB) in surface (0–20 cm depth) soil layers ranged from 4.25 to 6.77, 0.05 to 1.06 dS m–1, 5.07 to 48.4 g kg–1, 58.1 to 1167 mg kg–1, 1.80 to 415 mg kg–1, 200 to 2997 mg kg–1, 36.0 to 744 mg kg–1, 3.00 to 87.7 mg kg–1 and 0.09 to 2.10 mg kg–1, respectively. Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) norms were established for different nutrient expressions and were used to compute DRIS indices. As per DRIS indices, the order of requirement of nutrients in the region was found to be P > Mg > K > nitrogen (N) > B. Optimum leaf nutrient ranges as per DRIS norms varied from 1.64 to 2.79%, 0.36 to 0.52%, 0.37 to 0.75%, 0.89 to 1.97%, 0.35 to 0.63%, 0.89 to 1.50%, 3.10 to 13.9 mg kg?1, 7.50 to 32.2 mg kg?1, 35.0 to 91.1 mg kg?1, 206 to 948 mg kg?1, and 895 to 2075 mg kg?1 for N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and iron (Fe) respectively. On the basis of DRIS-derived sufficiency ranges, 14, 5, 11, 6, 6, 6, 8, 2, 3, 6, and 16% of leaf samples had less than optimum concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe respectively. The optimum ranges developed can be used as a guide for routine diagnostic and advisory purpose for balanced utilization of fertilizers.  相似文献

Calibration of crop responses to applied silicon (Si) serves as a basis for developing Si fertilizer recommendation guidelines. A greenhouse experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design with five replications, two sources of Si (wollastonite and slag) and four Si rates (0, 170, 340 and 680 kg ha?1) to calibrate plant-available Si for growing rice in Louisiana soils. Silicon concentrations were determined in soils using seven different extraction procedures. Based on a quadratic model (p < 0.05), the estimated soil Si critical level using 0.01 M calcium chloride (CaCl2) for Sharkey clay soil was 110 mg kg?1 while for Crowley silt loam and Commerce silt loam, levels were 37 and 43 mg kg?1, respectively. These results suggest that suitability of an extractant that gives the best estimate of plant-available Si could considerably depend on soil type and it is unlikely that there is a universal extractant for all soils.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this article was to compare soil phosphorus (P) extraction by sodium bicarbonate solution (Olsen P) and by ammonium lactate (AL P) and to create a model for prediction of Olsen P using ordinary soil‐fertility control data. The soils data used in this study included Olsen P, pHKCl, pHH2O, organic matter, AL P, and AL K. Soil pHKCl ranged from 3.5 to 8, organic matter up to 5%, AL K up to 400 mg kg?1, and AL P up to 200 mg kg?1. Olsen P and AL P were significantly correlated, and the difference between them was influenced by soil pH. Regression models included all soil data grouped by soil pH range, which significantly decreased the difference between predicted and measured Olsen P. The validation of the model was conducted on new data sets from field fertilization trials. The results show that Olsen P can be related to AL P and used for fertilizer recommendations instead of AL P.  相似文献

Abstract

Fixation and recovery of added phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) were studied in different soil types of pulse‐growing regions. Amounts of P and K fixed increased in all the soils irrespective of type and texture. With the increase in levels of added P and K, maximum P fixation was observed at lower levels of added P (50 mg kg?1). Alfisols showed maximum P‐fixation capacity (92.7%), followed by Vertisols (86.5%) and Inceptisols (76.6%) at 50 mg kg?1 added P. However, K fixation increased with increasing levels of added K up to 200 mg kg?1, and thereafter fixation either decreased or was maintained at similar levels. Vertisols showed higher K fixation than Inceptisols and Alfisols. Fertilizer P requirement per unit increase in available P in soil was highest in Bangalore (3.23) and lowest in Delhi (2.38). Fertilizer K requirement per unit increase in available K in soil was highest in Raipur and Gulbarga (1.75) and lowest in Ranchi (1.28).  相似文献

Rice, dry bean, corn, and soybean are important food crops. Phosphorus (P) deficiency is one of the most yield-limiting factors for these crops grown on highly weathered Brazilian Oxisols. Four greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine P requirements of these four crops. The P levels used were 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg kg?1. Growth, yield, and yield components evaluated of four crop species were significantly increased with the application of P fertilization. Most of the responses were quadratic in fashion when the P was applied in the range of 0 to 400 mg kg?1. Maximum grain yield of upland rice was obtained with the application of 238 mg P kg?1 of soil, maximum dry bean grain yield was obtained with the application of 227 mg P kg?1 of soil, and maximum grain yield of soybean was obtained with the application of 224 mg P kg?1 of soil. Maximum shoot growth of corn was obtained with the addition of 323 mg P kg?1 of soil. Most of the growth and yield components had significant positive association with grain yield or shoot dry weight. Phosphorus concentration and uptake were greater in the grain compared to straw in upland rice and dry bean plants. Overall, P-use efficiencies decreased with increasing P rates.  相似文献

We investigated the potential of soil moisture and nutrient amendments to enhance the biodegradation of oil in the soils from an ecologically unique semi-arid island. This was achieved using a series of controlled laboratory incubations where moisture or nutrient levels were experimentally manipulated. Respired CO2 increased sharply with moisture amendment reflecting the severe moisture limitation of these porous and semi-arid soils. The greatest levels of CO2 respiration were generally obtained with a soil pore water saturation of 50?C70%. Biodegradation in these nutrient poor soils was also promoted by the moderate addition of a nitrogen fertiliser. Increased biodegradation was greater at the lowest amendment rate (100 mg N kg?1 soil) than the higher levels (500 or 1,000 mg N kg?1 soil), suggesting the higher application rates may introduce N toxicity. Addition of phosphorous alone had little effect, but a combined 500 mg N and 200 mg P kg?1 soil amendment led to a synergistic increase in CO2 respiration (3.0×), suggesting P can limit the biodegradation of hydrocarbons following exogenous N amendment.  相似文献

A pot experiment, in which composted pig manure was applied to soils at rates of 0%, 0.5%, 1.5%, 3.0%, and 5.0% (W/W) to simulate additions of different amounts of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) to soil, was conducted to assess accumulation of metals by rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants from soils treated with manure. Results indicated that Cd concentrations in rice grains were more than the limit of 0.2 mg kg?1 when 0.14 mg kg?1 or more Cd was loaded to Ferralsols by manure application, but it was not more than the limit in Calcaric Cambisols. Zinc contents in polished rice grains did not exceed the permissible limit of 50 mg kg?1 in two soils. Copper concentrations in rice grain were slightly more than the limit of 10 mg kg?1 in Ferralsols but not in Calcaric Cambisols. Results suggested greater risk of heavy‐metal contamination from manure to paddy rice in Ferralsols than in Calcaric Cambisols.  相似文献

Abstract

Soil washing is one of the methods used to remediate soil contaminated with heavy metals, and when the contaminated elements have been effectively removed the washed soil can be used for agriculture. Soil washing was conducted using 0.5 mol L?1 CaCl2 solution at pH 4 as an extracting agent to remediate a paddy field soil contaminated with Cd. Dolomite powder was applied to neutralize the soil to the original pH 6.2. After CaCl2 washing, the content of Cd extractable in 0.1 mol L?1 HCl decreased from 2.4 to 0.8 mg kg?1. Subsequently, a pot experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of soil washing on Cd concentration in polished rice (Cdpr) for three successive years. Using the washed soil, Cdpr was ≤ 0.2 mg kg?1 with and without a treatment that simulates midseason drainage, whereas it was > 0.5 mg kg?1 in the unwashed soil with the midseason drainage treatment. The reasons for low Cdpr growth in the washed soil were the low content of exchangeable Cd in the soil and the resultant high soil pH (> 7). To evaluate the effect of soil pH on Cdpr in the fourth year, we adjusted soil pH to 5 with H2SO4 before transplanting rice seedlings. The Cdpr in the washed soil with the midseason drainage treatment increased to 0.47 mg kg?1, whereas it was less than 0.2 mg kg?1 under continuous flooding. Thus, high pH or whole season flooding are important to keep Cdpr at ≤ 0.2 mg kg?1 even after soil washing. With the application of dolomite and other ordinary fertilizers, soil properties were little affected by the present soil washing procedure because the difference in rice yield between the washed and unwashed plots was not significant within each year.  相似文献

Assessment of zinc (Zn) phytoavailability by the newly developed technique of diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) has started gaining more importance because of some advantages over routine soil extractants. A greenhouse study was conducted to determine Zn phytotoxicity thresholds and the phytoavailability of Zn to sorghum sudan (Sorghum vulgare var. sudanese) grass by DGT, compared with calcium chloride (CaCl2) extraction. Treatments were five Zn levels and two soil pH (6.5 and 6). To obtain various amounts of Zn phytoavailability, soils having two different pH values were amended with zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) at rates of 0, 150, 300, 600, and 1200 mg Zn kg?1. Control soil (pH = 6.5) was treated with predetermined elemental sulfur to create different soil pH values (6). Shoot and root Zn concentrations ranged from 27 to 827 mg kg?1 and 101 to 2858 mg kg?1, respectively. In general, the Zn concentrations in shoots and roots were increased by increasing Zn concentrations and soil pH. Increasing applied Zn to soil decreased the plant biomass yield and increased adsorption of Zn by DGT. Calcium (Ca) to Zn ratios for all treatments except controls were <26 for shoots and <13 for roots. The CaCl2‐extractable Zn and effective concentration (CE) correlated well with plant Zn concentration. A critical shoot Zn concentration for 90% of the control yield was chosen as an indicator of Zn toxicity. The performance of DGT, CaCl2 extraction, Ca/Zn ratio and plant Zn concentrations were similar for assessing Zn phytoavailability.  相似文献

Soil testing is an important diagnostic tool in determining nutrient imbalances and providing a basis for fertilizer application. The reliability and reproducibility of nutrient determination in soils is affected by the temperature of the extracting solution. We carried out laboratory investigations to account for the effect of temperature of the extractant on ammonium bicarbonate diethylene triamine penta‐acetic acid (ABDTPA)–extractable potassium (K), and developed a correction factor to standardize the results to a standard temperature. Forty soil samples with a wide range of characteristics were analyzed for ABDTPA‐extractable K at five laboratory temperatures, ranging from 15 to 35 °C. The soils represented soil textures varying from loamy sand to heavy clays. The electrical conductivity (EC) ranged from 0.14 to 47.8 dS m?1 (average 2.78 dS m?1), pH from 7.2 to 8.4 (average 8.0), lime from 3.7 to 22.4% (average 12.9%), organic matter from 0.25 to 1.43% (average 0.72%), and ABDTPA‐extractable K at 25 °C from 42 to 489 mg kg?1 (average 167 mg kg?1). The ABDTPA‐extractable K was positively correlated with temperature. Average values increased from 129 mg kg?1 at 15 °C to 225 mg kg?1 at 35 °C with R2 ranging from 0.63 to 0.997, and regression coefficient “b” ranged from 2.14 to 8.94. From the data, a temperature correction factor, Y = 2.85 + 0.01X (R2 = 0.46), was developed to convert ABDTPA‐extractable K determined at room temperature to a standard temperature of 25 °C.  相似文献

Abstract

Whether a tropical soil should be limed or not for a particular crop is strongly dependent on the levels of soil aluminum (Al) which can be determined with soil tests. Soil pH is used to predict whether lime is needed in less‐weathered soils, although some evidence indicates a soil Al test would be more accurate. The objectives of this study were to determine and to compare the accuracies of four soil tests to separate soils requiring lime from those that do not, and to determine the cause of acid‐soil injury to soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Soybean was grown in the greenhouse on four surface soils representing the major land resource areas of Louisiana and were amended with eight rates of lime, yields determined, and soils analyzed for soil pH, extractable Al, CaCl2‐extractable Al, CaCl2‐extractable manganese (Mn), and Al saturation. Acid‐soil injury in soybean grown on the Litro clay and Stough fsl was probably caused by soil‐Al effects while low soil calcium (Ca) and high soil Mn was likely responsible for lower yields from the Mahan fsl. Leaf Ca from the limed Mahan‐soil treatment was 5‐fold greater and leaf‐Mn 7‐fold less than control levels. Regression analyses’ R2 values were similar for all soil tests except for CaCl2‐extractable Mn, which was lower. Soil tests were compared across soil type by selecting treatments that had the same 85% relative yield. Using this data subset, there was no difference in the soil pH among the four soils, while there were significant differences among soils for all other soil test measurements indicating the superiority of soil pH for identifying acid‐soil injury. Critical test values were 5.1 soil pH, 30 mg kg‐1 extractable Al, 7% Al saturation, 0.7 mg‐kg‐1 CaCl2‐extractable Al, and 9 mg‐kg‐1 CaCl2‐extractable Mn.  相似文献

Pot-culture studies of intensive cropping without potassium (K) application, taking three successive crops of rice on Sonakhali (Inceptisol) and Ranibundh (Alfisol) soils, revealed that all the forms of soil K declined after the third crop compared to the corresponding initial soil status. A similar trend was also found for nonexchangeable K extracted sequentially and termed as Step K and CR-K (constant rate K). The CR-K contents showed little variations with cropping. Except for the potential buffering capacity of the soil for K at equilibrium (PBCK 0) values, all the quantity/intensity (Q/I) parameters, namely activity ratio of potassium (ARK e), labile K (–ΔK0), specifically held K (KX), and total labile pool of K (KL) values, decreased in both the soils as they were subjected to repeated cropping. The PBCK 0 values changed to a smaller extent in both the soils. In both soils, the threshold levels for release of intermediate K in terms of activity ratio, exchangeable K, and K concentration in soil solution decreased after the third cropping as compared to the initial status. The dry-matter weight of rice, K concentration, and K uptake decreased with the cropping sequence. The difference in values of each parameter between initial status and the third crop was much wider in Inceptisol than in Alfisol.  相似文献

Knowledge of K-dynamics in soils can help devise practices for efficient K management in intensive rice-wheat systems. We studied the effect of long-term application of rice straw, farmyard manure (FYM) and inorganic fertilizer on total K and its distribution among different forms in 60-cm soil profile after 14 years of rice-wheat cropping. The exchangeable, the non-exchangeable and the lattice K respectively comprised 1%, 3–10% and 89–95% of total K in surface soil under different treatments. Application of rice straw and FYM positively impacted total K status of soil and its distribution among different forms. The greatest concentrations of total K, lattice K, exchangeable K and NH4OAc-extractable K were observed in plots receiving both rice straw and FYM together and the lowest in inorganic fertilizer treated plots. On the contrary, the non-exchangeable K was the highest in inorganically fertilized plots and the lowest in rice straw amended plots. The exchangeable, the water soluble and the NH4OAc-extractable K decreased with soil depth and did not indicate K movement beyond the rooting zone of the crops. The results showed that incorporation of rice residue in soil, instead of burning, besides reducing environmental pollution led to improved K-fertility of soils.  相似文献

Boron (B) is an essential microelement, which is necessary for reproductive organs including pollen tube formation in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and flowering and boll formation in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) The study was associated with wheat-cotton rotation in 80 farm fields, belonging to different soil series, in four districts of cotton belt of Punjab, Pakistan to assess concentrations of extractable B in soils [0.05 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) extractable B], and added fertilizer B and their relationship to some soil physico-chemical properties [pH, organic matter (OM), calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and clay content], yields and total B concentrations in wheat and cotton plants. All soils had alkaline pH (7.45 to 8.55), high CaCO3 content (2.14 to 8.65%), less than 1.0% OM (0.33 to 0.99%), low plant available-P (Olsen P less than 8 mg kg?1 soil) and medium ammonium acetate extractable potassium (K) (< 200 mg K kg?1 soil). Of the 80 soil samples, 65 samples (81%) were low in available B (<0.45 mg B kg?1, ranging from 0.11 to 0.43 mg B kg?1) Of the corresponding 80 plant samples, leaves B concentrations were below critical levels (<10 mg B kg?1 for wheat; <30 mg B kg?1 for cotton) for all the tested samples for wheat and cotton. The regression analysis between plant total B concentrations and soil extractable B concentrations showed strong linear positive relationships for both wheat (R2 = 0.509***, significant at P <0.001) and cotton (R2 = 0.525***, significant at P <0.001). Further regression analysis between extractable soil B and wheat grain yield as well as between wheat leaves total B and wheat grain yield also depicted strong linear relationships (R2 = 0.76 and 0.42, respectively). Boron fertilizer demonstration plots laid out at farmers’ fields low in extractable B, in each district not only enhanced grain yields of wheat crop but also contributed a significant increase towards seed cotton yield of succeeding cotton crop through residual B effect. In conclusion, the findings suggest that many soils in the cotton belt of Punjab may be low in extractable B for wheat and cotton, especially when these crops are grown on low OM soils with high CaCO3 content.  相似文献
