Abstract

Maximum yield research (MYR) and maximum economic yield systems (MEY) are important under the present situation of increased demographic changes, which have reduced the per capita availability of both land and food. Among root and tuber crops, cassava is found in a variety of production systems and performs well under various levels of management from low‐input to high‐input systems. A systematic approach in fertilizer use involves the determination and elimination of soil nutrient constraints for balanced supply of all potentially deficient essential nutrients for sustainable high yield. In the systematic approach of determining optimal fertilizer for cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) in a Typic Kandiustult soil of Kerala, India, studies on critical levels of nutrients, original nutritional status of the soil, its sorption capacity, and greenhouse/screenhouse nutrient survey were carried out. The critical levels of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) were determined as 8.23 and 43.5 µg g?1, respectively. The preliminary analysis of the soil of the experimental site revealed the overall fertility status as very poor. The sorption studies conducted for P, K, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), sulfur (S), and boron (B) indicated P, K, S, and B were limiting in this particular soil. The quantities of these nutrients needed to optimize the soil nutrient status were determined from the preliminary soil analysis, critical levels of nutrients, and sorption curves and found to be 136 µg mL?1 P, 0.338 meq 100 mL?1 K, 20 µg mL?1 S, and 6.025 µg mL?1 B, respectively. From the greenhouse nutrient survey, N, P, K, and calcium (Ca) were seen as limiting nutrients for this soil; therefore the optimum treatment for cassava was fixed as N‐P‐K at 100:300:300 kg ha?1, respectively. Field experiments were conducted for two seasons with different levels of the optimum treatment using a short duration (6–7 months) cassava variety, Sree Vijaya. The optimum treatment gave a yield of 43.41 t ha?1, whereas the yield under the existing practice recommendations was 20–25 t ha?1. Economic analysis showed this optimum treatment as the best in terms of highest gross return (Rs 1,31,125/‐), net return (Rs 83,150/‐), added return (Rs 70, 178/‐), added profit (Rs 56,142/‐), and benefit cost ratio (BCR) (2.73).  相似文献

Abstract

The effect of zinc–phosphorus (Zn‐P) interaction on Zn efficiency of six wheat cultivars was studied. The higher dry matter yields were observed when Zn was applied at 5 µg g?1 soil than with no Zn application. Phosphorus applications also increased dry matter yield up to the application of 25 µg P g?1 soil. The dry matter yield was significantly lower at the P rate of 250 µg g?1 soil. At the Zn‐deficient level, the Zn‐efficient cultivars had higher Zn concentrations in the shoots. Zinc concentrations in all cultivars increased when the P level in the soil was increased from 0 to 25 µg P g?1 soil except for the cv. Durati, in which Zn concentrations decreased with increases in P levels. However, when Zn×P interactions were investigated, it was observed that at a Zn‐deficient level, Zn concentrations in the plant shoot decreased with each higher level of P, and more severe Zn deficiency was observed at P level of 250 µg g?1 soil.  相似文献

Determining potassium (K) fertilizer requirement using sorption isotherms is considered more accurate than conventional soil K tests. A total of 59 surface soil samples were used to establish K exchange isotherm. To evaluate K requirement sorption test, a glasshouse experiment using perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne, cv. Roper) was carried out on 10 soil samples. The experiment was laid out as a completely randomized design with four replications and four K levels (K0, K20, K40, K80). Concentrations of K in solution established by adding K in the pots estimated from the sorption curve ranged from 20 to 80 mg K l?1 including check treatment (no K). Dry matter yield of ryegrass in most soils approached maximum as adjusted K levels were increased to 20 mg K l?1. The amounts of K required to bring the soils to 20 mg l?1 in soil solution varied among soils and ranged from 99 to 399 mg kg?1, on average 205 mg kg?1 soil. It was found that a useful regression model for the prediction of standard K requirement (K20) included the combination of plant available K extracted by NH4OAc (Av-K) and clay content: K20 = ?41 ? 0.63 Av-K + 9.0 Clay (R2 = 0.61, p < 0.001, n = 59).  相似文献

An estimated 97 percent of the soils in Laos are characterized by low phosphorus (P). This characteristic, together with high acidity, constrains food crop production. The P status, sorption, and associated properties were evaluated for fifteen important agricultural soils from the uplands. Soil pH values ranged from 4.5 to 5.9. Soil organic carbon (C) varied from 7.0 to 22.9 g kg?1. Soil clay varied from 179 to 709 g kg?1. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) also varied from 4.30 to 32.1 cmolc kg?1. Extractable P levels of thirteen of the fifteen soils were P deficient with medium to very high P sorption, indicating substantial fertilizer P requirements. Dithionite and oxalate aluminum and iron predicted P sorbed at 0.2 mg P L?1. The extractable P increase per unit added P, P buffer coefficient (PBC), was low, also indicating high P sorption. Field studies are needed to confirm predictions of P requirements.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to observe the phosphate sorption potential of some soils of Bangladesh. Three soil series of calcareous origin, namely Sara (Aquic Eutrochrept), Gopalpur (Aquic Eutrochrept) and Ishurdi (Aeric Haplaquept), and two soil series of non-calcareous origin, namely Tejgaon (Rhodic Paleustult) and Ghatail (Aeric Haplaquept), were selected. The soils were equilibrated with dilute solution of calcium chloride containing graded concentrations of phosphate (0, 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50?μg?P?mL?1), and the amount of phosphate sorbed or desorbed was determined. Although all the soils showed potential for sorbing phosphate from applied phosphorus, their ability to sorb phosphorus differed. Increasing rates of phosphate application increased the amount of P sorption but reduced phosphate sorption percentage in all soils except Tejgaon. Phosphate was sorbed by the soils in the order: Tejgaon > Ghatail > Ishurdi > Gopalpur > Sara at 50?μg?P?mL?1 application. Soils possessing higher amounts of free iron oxide and clay sorbed more phosphate from applied phosphorus.  相似文献

Abstract

Soil chemical and physical reactions involving phosphorus (P) must be understood to predict the risk of P being transported from agricultural land to streams and lakes. The kinetics of P sorption by an Ultisols from West Virginia, USA, receiving P from fertilizers were compared to soils amended with turkey litter. Addition of 6.6 and 13.2 Mg turkey litter ha?1 increased Bray 1P levels to about the same level as adding 53 and 115 kg P ha?1, respectively. Phosphorus binding capacity decreased to a greater extent when P was added as fertilizer as compared to turkey litter. For example, P binding maximum was 360 mg P kg?1 dry soil when soil was amended with 6.6 Mg turkey litter ha?1 as compared to 260 mg P kg?1 dry soil when amended with 53 kg P ha?1. This study demonstrates that the decrease in P‐binding capacity with increasing soil P is less when P is added as turkey litter.  相似文献

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a heavy feeder of nutrients and requires balanced and adequate supply of nutrients for optimum growth and yield. Information regarding soil nutrient status and leaf nutrient concentration is very much required for proper fertilizer application. Therefore, a survey was conducted for assessment of soil nutrient status and leaf nutrient concentration in 64 oil palm plantations in the state of Goa lying in the west coastal region of India. Soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon (OC), available potassium (K) (ammonium acetate-extractable K) (NH4OAc-K), available phosphorus (P) (Bray’s-P), exchangeable calcium (Ca) (Exch. Ca) and magnesium (Mg) (Exch. Mg), available sulphur (S) (calcium chloride-extractable S) (CaCl2-S), and hot water soluble boron (B) (HWB) in surface (0–20 cm depth) soil layers ranged from 4.25 to 6.77, 0.05 to 1.06 dS m–1, 5.07 to 48.4 g kg–1, 58.1 to 1167 mg kg–1, 1.80 to 415 mg kg–1, 200 to 2997 mg kg–1, 36.0 to 744 mg kg–1, 3.00 to 87.7 mg kg–1 and 0.09 to 2.10 mg kg–1, respectively. Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) norms were established for different nutrient expressions and were used to compute DRIS indices. As per DRIS indices, the order of requirement of nutrients in the region was found to be P > Mg > K > nitrogen (N) > B. Optimum leaf nutrient ranges as per DRIS norms varied from 1.64 to 2.79%, 0.36 to 0.52%, 0.37 to 0.75%, 0.89 to 1.97%, 0.35 to 0.63%, 0.89 to 1.50%, 3.10 to 13.9 mg kg?1, 7.50 to 32.2 mg kg?1, 35.0 to 91.1 mg kg?1, 206 to 948 mg kg?1, and 895 to 2075 mg kg?1 for N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and iron (Fe) respectively. On the basis of DRIS-derived sufficiency ranges, 14, 5, 11, 6, 6, 6, 8, 2, 3, 6, and 16% of leaf samples had less than optimum concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe respectively. The optimum ranges developed can be used as a guide for routine diagnostic and advisory purpose for balanced utilization of fertilizers.  相似文献

Abstract

The rapid expansion of mandarin (Citrus reticulata L.) production areas with high agrochemical input in the highland areas of northern Thailand has resulted in negative effects in terms of production, environment, soil quality, and public health. The use of microorganisms as plant growth promoters is an alternative method to reduce agrochemical input. Thus, we studied the diversity of endophytic actinomycetes in mandarin and their potential as plant growth promoters. A total of 252 endophytic actinomycete isolates were recovered from mandarin. Based on spore chain morphology, cell wall type, and 16S rRNA gene sequence, the isolates were classified into six genera: Streptomyces, Nocardia, Nocardiopsis, Spirillospora, Microbispora and Micromonospora. The most frequent isolates recovered were members of Streptomyces (85.3%). Selected isolates (64 isolates) from these genera were evaluated for their indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production potential in a medium with 2 mg mL?1 tryptophan, and all the selected isolates showed the potential to produce IAA, with average values of IAA production of 13.34, 3.36, 140.38, 12.55, 1.40, and 6.19 µg IAA mL?1, respectively. Isolates of genus Nocardiopsis showed a very high ability to produce IAA that was the highest among all the genera, with values ranging from 62.23 to 222.75 µg mL?1. Twelve isolates selected from these genera were inoculated onto mandarin seedlings, and the results indicated that the shoot height, fresh shoot weight and fresh root weight of the seedlings were promoted by the inoculation of endophytic actinomycetes, with values ranging from 20.2 to 49.1%, 14.9 to 53.6%, and 1.6 to 102% over the control, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract

Selenium (Se), and boron (B), and salinity contamination of agricultural drainage water is potentially hazardous for water reuse strategies in central California. This greenhouse study assessed tolerance and Se, B, and chloride (Cl?) accumulation in different varieties (Emerald City, Samurai, Greenbelt, Marathon) of broccoli (Brassica oleracea L.) irrigated with water of the following different qualities: (1) non‐saline [electrical conductivity (EC) of <1 dS m?1]; (2) Cl?/sulfate salinity of ~5 dS m?1, 250 µg Se L?1, and 5 mg B L?1; and (3) non‐saline and 250 µg Se L?1. One hundred and ten days after transplanting, plants were harvested and dry weight (DW) yields and plant accumulation of Se, B, and Cl? was evaluated in floret, leaf, and stem. Irrespective of treatments floret yields from var. Samurai were the lowest among all varieties, while floret yields from var. Marathon was the only variety to exhibit some sensitivity to treatments. For all varieties, plant Se concentrations were greatest in the floret (up to 51 mg kg?1 DW) irrespective of treatment, and B and Cl? concentrations were greatest in the leaves; 110 mg B kg?1 DW and 5.4% Cl?, respectively. At post harvest, treatment 2 (with salinity, B, and Se) increased soil salinity to almost 6 dS m?1, total Se concentrations to a high of 0.64 mg kg?1 DW soil, and water soluble B concentrations to a high of 2.3 mg B L?1; soluble Se concentrations were insignificant. The results indicate that var. Emerald City, Greenbelt, and Marathon should be considered as recipients of moderately saline effluent enriched with Se and B under field conditions.  相似文献

Abstract

Arsenic (As) is a deadly poison at high concentrations. It is mysterious in the sense that people are exposed to it most of the time through drinking groundwater, fortunately at much lower concentrations than the deadly levels, and usually without knowing it. Arsenic content in alluvial aquifers of Punjab varied from 3.5 to 688 µg L?1. Arsenic status of groundwater is classified into low (<10 µg L?1), moderate (≥10 to <25 µg L?1), high (≥25 to <50 µg L?1), and very high (>50 µg L?1). In zone I, the concentration of As in groundwater varied from 3.5 to 42 µg L?1 with a mean value of 23.4 µg L?1. On the basis of these limits, only 8% of samples were low, whereas 51 and 41% of the total samples collected from this region fall in the moderate and high As categories. The concentration of As in groundwater of zone II varied from 9.8 to 42.5 µg L?1 with a mean value of 24.1 µg L?1. Arsenic concentration in the alluvial aquifers of the central plain of zone II is 2 and 52% in the low and moderate limits. In this region, 46% of groundwater sites contain high As concentrations. Arsenic concentrations in the aridic southwestern parts are significantly different from other two provinces. The As concentration ranged from 11.4 to 688 µg L?1 with average value of 76.8 µg L?1. Eleven percent of the aquifers of the southwestern region of zone III are in the moderate category, 54% in the high, and 35% in the very high. According to safe As limits (<10 µg L?1), only 3 and 1% of the groundwater samples collected from zones I and II were fit for dinking purposes with respect to As content. In the aridic southwest, zone III, all water samples contained As concentrations greater than the safe limits and thus are not suitable for drinking purposes. The presence of elevated As concentrations in groundwater are generally due to the results of natural occurrences of As in the aquifer materials. The concentration of other competitive oxyanions in waters such as phosphate, sulfate, and borate also depressed the adsorption of As on the sorption sites of aquifer materials and thereby eventually elevate the As concentration in groundwaters. In groundwater of alluvial aquifers of Punjab, released from sulfide oxidation and oxyhydroxide of iron, elevated (>10 µg L?1) concentrations of As were widespread because of high pH (>8.0) and higher concentrations of phosphate, borate, sulfate, and hydroxyl anions. It is conclusively evident that geochemical conditions, such as pH, oxidation–reduction, associated or competing ions, and evaporative environments have significant effects on As concentration in groundwater. These conditions influence how much As is dissolved or precipitated into the water and how much is bound to the aquifer materials or the solid particles in water.  相似文献

Abstract

Applying animal manure to crops is a good disposal practice that also recycles nutrients. A 2‐year study was conducted involving lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) and two N sources, ammonium nitrate (AN, 340 g N kg?1), and broiler chicken manure (BM, 10 g N kg?1). The sources were tested at five N rates (0, 67, 135, 202, and 269 kg N ha?1) in a split‐plot design with N source as the main plot and N rate as the subplot. Treatments were replicated three times in 2000 and four times in 2001. Leaf tissue (early flowering stage) was analyzed for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn). Although most nutrients were within or above the sufficiency range, K and Cu limited crop production for all treatments. There was no difference between N sources for fresh pod yields. The highest fresh pod yield occurred at 213 kg N ha?1, but the critical point was obtained with 100 kg N ha?1, a rate agreeing with current University of Florida recommendations.  相似文献

Abstract

Effective soil diagnostic criteria for exchangeable potassium (Ex-K) combined with inorganic potassium (K) application rates were developed to lower K input in forage corn (Zea mays L.) production using experimental fields with different application rates and histories of cattle manure compost. Two corn varieties, ‘Cecilia’ as a low K uptake variety and ‘Yumechikara’ as a high K uptake variety, were selected from among 20 varieties and tested to make diagnostic criteria for K fertilization applicable to varieties with different K uptakes. The K uptakes increased from 96 to 303 kg K ha?1 for ‘Cecilia’ and from 123 to 411 kg K ha?1 for ‘Yumechikara’ with increasing Ex-K content on a dry soil basis from 0.11 to 0.92 g kg?1 with no inorganic K fertilizer application. The K uptake by corn for achieving the target dry matter yield of 18 Mg ha?1 was estimated to be approximately 200 kg K ha?1 in common between the two varieties. Yields of both varieties achieved the target yield at an Ex-K content of approximately 0.30 g kg?1 with no K fertilization, although ‘Yumechikara’ reached the target yield at a lower Ex-K content. At the low Ex-K content of 0.1 g kg?1, inorganic K fertilizer application at 83 kg K ha?1 was needed to gain the target yield, and apparent K recovery rate for K fertilizer was calculated to be 70% for both varieties. The K uptakes for gaining the target yield by the K fertilization were lower than that by soil K supply. Based on these results, diagnostic criteria of Ex-K and inorganic K application rates were set up as follows: at an Ex-K content of < 0.15 g kg?1, inorganic K fertilizer is applied at 83 kg K ha?1 (100 kg ha?1 as potassium oxide (K2O) equivalent); at an Ex-K content of 0.15–0.30 g kg?1, the application rate is reduced to 33 kg K ha?1 (40 kg K2O ha?1); at an Ex-K content of ≥ 0.30 g kg?1, inorganic K fertilizer is not applied because of sufficient K in the soil. Additionally, we propose that cattle manure compost be used to supplement soil K fertility.  相似文献

A sandy soil was amended with different types of sewage sludge (digested, dried, and composted) and pig slurry. The composted sludges displayed higher organic‐matter stability (39–45%) than only digested sludge (26–39%) or digested + dried sludge (23–32%). The microbial biomass of the dried sludge was undetectable. Digested and composted sludges and pig slurry displayed microbial biomasses (12492–13887 µg g?1, 1221–2050 µg g?1, and 5511 µg g?1, respectively) greater than the soil (108 µg g?1). The wastes were applied at seven doses, ranging from 10 to 900 g kg?1. Soils were incubated for 28 days. Substrate‐induced respiration (SIR) was measured for 12 consecutive hours on day 1 and on day 28. The results showed that SIR increased with the dose of organic amendment. However, SIR decreased when moderate doses of pig slurry or high doses of digested + dried sludge were tested. The possibility of using this inhibition as an ecotoxicological indicator is discussed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of soil pH on zinc (Zn) sorption and desorption for four surface soils from the Canterbury Plains region of New Zealand. Zinc sorption by the soils, adjusted to different pH values, was measured from various initial solution Zn concentrations in the presence of 0.01 M calcium nitrate [Ca(NO3)2]. Zinc desorption isotherms were derived from the cumulative Zn desorbed (µg g?1 soil) after each of 10 desorption periods by sequentially suspending the same soil samples in fresh Zn‐free 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2. Zinc sorption and desorption varied widely with soil pH. Desorption of both native and added Zn decreased continuously with rising pH and became very low at pH values greater than 6.5. The proportion of sorbed Zn that could be desorbed back into solution decreased substantially as pH increased to more than 5.5. However, there were differences between soils regarding the extent of the hysteresis effect.  相似文献

Abstract

A rapid, sensitive, and accurate method for the separation and speciative determination of chromium (Cr)(VI) and Cr(III) in water samples has been developed using sorption as the separation technique in conjunction with final determination by electrothermal atomic absorption spectroscopy (ETAAS). The present method, where granular calcite is used as selective sorbent, separates Cr(III) with retention values up to 99%, resulting in high accuracy determination of Cr(VI). Total Cr was likewise determined by ETAAS after an efficient reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) using ascorbic acid as reducing agent, deriving Cr(III) concentration from the difference between total Cr and Cr(VI). The parameters of the separation technique, solution pH (4.5–5.5), solution flow rate through the calcite column (0.14–0.42 mL min?1), and calcite column internal diameter (1.5–3.0 cm), were evaluated. Best results were achieved with pH of 5.5, flow rate of 0.42 mL min?1, and column internal diameter of 1.5 cm. Optimum determination conditions were found using magnesium nitrate [Mg(NO3)2] as chemical modifier, pyrolysis, and atomization temperatures of 1400 and 2200°C, respectively. In such conditions, the detection limits (n=10) were 1.5 and 0.8 µg L?1 for Cr(III) and Cr(VI), respectively.  相似文献

Abstract

Two pot experiments under greenhouse condition were carried out to study the influence of vermicompost and zinc‐enriched compost with two levels of iron and zinc on the productivity of geranium (Pelargonium graveolens). Joint application of vermicompost and zinc‐enriched compost was effective in increasing the herb and oil yield over sole application of iron and zinc. Combined application of vermicompost and zinc‐enriched compost gave better herb and oil yield in both the experiments. With application of vermicompost and zinc‐enriched compost with two graded levels of iron, higher N, P, and K concentrations were observed with application of vermicompost (5 g kg?1), vermicompost (5 g kg?1), and Fe 12.5 ppm+Zn‐enriched compost 2.5 g kg?1 soil, respectively, over control. Highest reduction in soil pH was observed with an application of vermicompost at 5 g kg?1 soil; maximum soil organic carbon content was also recorded in the same treatment. In experiment II, joint application of vermicompost, zinc‐enriched compost, and graded levels of zinc recorded highest N, P, and K concentration with treatments of Zn (15 ppm)+vermicompost (2.5 g kg?1), vermicompost (5 g kg?1), and Zn (15 ppm)+vermicompost (2.5 g kg?1 soil), respectively. Nitrogen, P, and K content increased by 36, 125, and 305%, respectively, with these treatments over the control.

Chemical constituents of geranium oil such as cis‐rose oxide, isomenthone, linalool, citronellyl, geranylformate, geranyl, and epi‐γ‐eudesmol were significantly improved by combined application of Zn with vermicompost and Zn‐enriched compost as compared to sole application of Zn. Similar effects were observed with Fe in combination with vermicompost and Zn‐enriched compost on most of the chemical constituents of geranium oil. Physicochemical properties of the soil were also improved as macro‐ and micronutrient availability markedly increased in both the experiments because of combined application of vermicompost and Zn‐enriched compost with two levels of Zn and Fe.  相似文献

The worldwide production of rice husk, a by‐product and agrowaste that causes serious environmental problems, may reach 116 million t y?1. The objectives of this study were (i) to determine the physicochemical changes of rice husk and its structural chemistry during composting using 13carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) and (ii) to determine the effect of the composted rice husk (CRH) on the properties of Oxisol and cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) growth under glasshouse conditions. Results showed an active composting phase occurred at the first 53 days as revealed by high carbon dioxide (CO2)‐C (40–71 µg g?1 h?1) production, followed by a matured composting phase occurring at 54–116 days as revealed by decreasing in CO2‐C production (10 µg g?1 h?1). The active composting was accompanied by increases in electrical conductivity (EC), pH, ammonium (NH4 +), and nitrate (NO3), whereas during the matured composting phase, the EC and cation exchange capacity increased but pH, NH4 +, and NO3 ?1 decreased. The ash of the produced compost contains mainly calcium (Ca), potassium (K), sulfur (S), magnesium (Mg), and phosphorus (P) as essential nutrients. The CP/MAS 13C NMR spectra before and after various composting times indicated the dominance of sharp and well‐resolved signal peaks at O‐alkyl C and di‐O‐alkyl C regions (67–73%), which are characteristic of cellulose. The percentage of N‐alky/methoxyl was 23–26% whereas phenolic, carboxyl, and alkyl C types were less than 3% each. The application of the CRH to an Oxisol significantly increased soil pH and Ca, Mg, K, sodium (Na), and silicon (Si) ions of in situ soil solution but decreased the amounts of toxic ions [aluminum (Al), manganese (Mn), and iron (Fe)]. The CRH was found to increase cocoa growth up to 37%.  相似文献

An on-farm field experiment was conducted on an acidic soil to investigate the effects of combined use of lime and deficient nutrients on herbage yield of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Omitting lime and limiting nutrients led to elevated concentrations of aluminium (Al), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) in alfalfa leaves and stems and caused severe reductions in herbage yield of alfalfa. Combined use of lime (2 t ha?1) and nutrients [phosphorus (P): 20 kg ha?1, sulfur (S): 20 kg ha?1, zinc (Zn): 4 kg ha?1, and boron (B): 2 kg ha?1] had the maximum increase in groundcover, root biomass, nodulation, leaf retention, leaf-to-stem ratio, herbage yield, crude protein, and nutrient composition of alfalfa. These beneficial effects were due to raised soil pH; improved calcium (Ca), P, S, Zn, and B nutrition; and reduced Al, Mn, and Fe toxicity. Aluminium and all the nutrients except copper (Cu) were more concentrated in alfalfa leaves than stems.

Aluminum concentration was about three times greater in the lower leaves than in upper leaves. Lower leaves also had much greater concentrations of Ca, Mg, K, S, Fe, Mn, Cu, and B compared with upper leaves. In contrast, P and Zn concentrations were greater in the upper leaves than in lower leaves. Results suggest that the combined use of lime and all the limiting nutrients may realize potential beneficial effects of alfalfa on acidic soils where more than one essential nutrient is deficient. This may increase growth potential, nitrogen contributions, and groundcover by alfalfa and reduce soil erosion and runoff.  相似文献

A power plant that utilizes turkey manure as fuel to produce energy was built in Benson, Minnesota, and started full energy production in 2007. The plant was built to meet legislative requirements governing the use of renewable sources to generate energy in Minnesota. Although the use of turkey manure as biofuel generates energy, it also results in turkey manure ash (TMA) as a by‐product that contains phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulfur (S), and zinc (Z) as well as other essential and nonessential elements. A 2‐year study was conducted to compare TMA with triple‐superphosphate and potassium chloride fertilizers as a source of nutrients for alfalfa (Medicago sativa) at three locations: Lamberton, Morris, and Appleton, Minnesota. The soils at Lamberton and Appleton were acidic with P and K concentrations ranging from medium‐high to very high, whereas the soil at Morris was alkaline with high concentrations of P and K. The experiment consisted of a control (0 P and 0 K) and annual and split applications of TMA and fertilizer. Annual TMA and fertilizer rates were 84 kg P2O5 ha?1, 118 kg K2O ha?1, and 34 kg S ha?1. Split rates were 42/42 kg P2O5 ha?1, 59/59 kg K2O ha?1, and 17/17 kg S ha?1. However, because of an overestimation of citrate‐soluble P in 2005 for the TMA, the total amount of available P applied with the TMA for the 2‐year study was 168 kg P2O5 ha?1 compared with 286 kg P2O5 ha?1 for the fertilizer. In the first year, fertilizer resulted in greater alfalfa biomass yield than TMA and the control, whereas in the second year, alfalfa yields with TMA and fertilizer were similar and both more than the control. In 2005, TMA resulted in more copper (Cu) and S tissue concentrations than the fertilizer. In 2006, application of both sources increased tissue P and S concentrations compared with the control. The TMA increased tissue Cu concentration and Zn plant uptake compared with fertilizer. Bray P1–extractable soil P concentrations were less with TMA and control treatments than with the fertilizer treatments. Ammonium acetate–extractable soil sodium (Na) concentrations were greater with TMA than with fertilizer and the control. By the second year, both ash and fertilizer treatments resulted in more K uptake than the untreated control with no difference in K uptake between the two sources or time of application. Both sources were effective in increasing P uptake compared with the untreated control. TMA was shown to be an effective source of nutrients for alfalfa production.  相似文献

Long-term effects of chemical fertilizers and farmyard manure (FYM) in rice (Oryza sativa)–wheat (Triticum aestivum) cropping system were monitored for two consecutive years after 38 and 39 years on productivity and soil biological properties of Mollisols. The study encompasses varying chemical fertilizer levels of optimum fertilizer rate (120, 26 and 37 kg ha?1 N, P and K, respectively) for both the crops. The treatments were application of 50% NPK, 100% NPK, 150% NPK, 100% NPK + hand weeding (HW), 100% NPK + Zn, 100% NP, 100% N, 100% NPK + 15 t FYM ha?1, 100% NPK(-S) and unfertilized control. The rice and wheat yields were highest with 100% NPK + 15 t FYM ha?1. This treatment also gave maximum and significantly more counts of bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes in soil than all the other treatments after crop harvest. The soil microbial biomass C (410.0 and 407.5 µg g?1) and N (44.53 and 48.30 µg g?1) after rice and wheat, respectively, were highest with 100% NPK + 15 t FYM ha?1, which were significantly higher over all the other treatments. The activities of soil enzymes like dehydrogenase, acid and alkaline phosphatase, arylsulphatase and urease and CO2 evolution rate with 100% NPK + 15 t FYM ha?1 were also found significantly higher over the other treatments. Fertilizer treatments with 100% NPK and 150% NPK were comparable and significantly better than application of 50% NPK, 100% N, 100% NP and 100% NPK(-S) in various studied soil biological properties. Integrated use of 100% NPK with FYM sustained the higher yields and soil biological properties under ricewheat cropping system in Mollisols. Application of Zn and hand weeding with 100% NPK were found better over 100% NPK alone in rice and wheat productivity. Imbalanced use of chemical fertilizers had the harmful effect on soil biological health.  相似文献
