Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the characteristics and potential utilization of synthetic soil aggregates (SSA) produced by mixing acidic “Kunigami Mahji” soil in Okinawa, Japan, with waste materials, such as coal fly ash, used paper and starch, as media for crop growth. A series of different SSA were produced by incorporating various percentages (i.e. 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%) of coal fly ash into the “Kunigami Mahji” soil with used paper and starch. The particle density and bulk density of the original “Kunigami Mahji” soil were 2.67 and 1.23 g cm?3, respectively. The increased percentages of added coal fly ash, used paper and starch significantly decreased the particle and bulk densities of SSA compared with the original “Kunigami Mahji” soil because of the low particle and bulk densities of the coal fly ash (2.10 and 0.96 g cm?3, respectively). The SSA particle density varied between 2.39 and 2.14 g cm?3, and bulk density varied between 0.72 and 0.81 g cm?3, depending on the additional percentages of coal ash from 20–100%. Maximum water-holding capacity and saturated hydraulic conductivity were increased with the formation of SSA with coal fly ash, used paper and starch binder compared with the original “Kunigami Mahji” soil. The saturated hydraulic conductivity values of the SSA increased because of their low bulk density compared with the original soil. The addition of coal fly ash, used paper and starch to the acidic (pH = 4.62) “Kunigami Mahji” soil to form SSA increased the pH (6.70–9.96), electrical conductivity, exchangeable cation concentration and cation exchange capacity. The addition of coal fly ash up to 60% increased the aggregate strength. The growth and yield of komatsuna and soybean crops with SSA as a crop growth medium was assessed. Both crops showed the highest growth and yield when grown with SSA containing 20% of coal fly ash. Synthetic soil aggregates containing more than 20% of coal fly ash reduced plant growth and yield. Therefore, SSA produced from “Kunigami Mahji” soil with 20% of coal fly ash, used paper and starch can be successfully used as a medium for crop growth.  相似文献

Field experiments were carried out to assess the effect of nutrient management on soil properties and available micronutrients using Soil Test Crop Response (STCR) based targeted yield equations under a six-year old pearl millet-wheat cropping system. After six years, results showed that soil pH and bulk density decreased, while cation exchange capacity and organic carbon increased in farmyard manure (FYM) as compared to control and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) treated plots in both surface and sub-surface soil depths. Higher values of available zinc (Zn) (1.54 mg kg?1) and iron (Fe) (5.68 mg kg?1) were maintained in FYM+NPK treated plots, while higher values of manganese (Mn) (6.16 mg kg?1) and copper (Cu) (1.07 mg kg?1) were found in FYM alone at surface soil as compared to sub-surface soil. This study demonstrated the importance of application of FYM in improving soil properties and maintaining micronutrients availability in soil and their uptake by wheat for sustainable crop production.  相似文献

The recovery of clay soil from a single incidence of heavy axle load compaction was investigated. Loads of 10 and 20 t axle−1 were applied before and after a rainfall event in May, 1982. Grain corn (Zea mays L.) was then grown for three consecutive seasons and changes in bulk density to a depth of 0.6 m and crop yields were monitored. Differences between the effects of loading treatments on soil bulk density decreased with time, but 3 years after compaction application there were still significantly higher densities caused by both loading levels at depths between 0.3 and 0.4 m. In the third year of studies, crop growth and yields were still significantly lower owing to heavy axle loading.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to investigate the spatial distribution of roots and cracks in two clay soils cropped with sunflower under different inter-row spacing in order to identify the optimal management. A latin square experimental design was applied to compare bare soil and soil cropped with sunflower, with three plant densities, obtained by keeping constant the number of plants on the row (3 plants m?1) and varying the row spacing (0.4, 0.6, 0.8 m). The presence of the crop and the different distance between rows influenced soil moisture content as well as the root spatial distribution and thus the structural features of cracks. Increasingly lower values of moisture were found in both soils as the distance between rows decreased; an opposite trend was observed for both root density and crack size. The volume of cracks in the soil grown with sunflower at 0.4 m row spacing was 201.4 m3 ha?1, thus 8 times higher than the value on the bare soil and 2.5 times higher compared to the one grown at 0.8 m between rows. Optimal results in terms of root density, soil moisture and crack size were obtained with an inter-row spacing of 0.6 m.  相似文献

This study investigated the impacts of organic- and clay-based soil amendments, and their combinations on crop water productivity (CWP) using maize as a test crop. On-station field trials were established over two consecutive years at the Naphok and Veunkham sites in Laos. At each site, 10 treatments were applied in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments were control, rice husk biochar (10 t ha?1), bentonite clay (10 t ha?1), compost (4 t ha?1), clay-manure compost (10 t ha?1), rice husk biochar compost (10 t ha?1), bentonite clay + biochar, bentonite-clay + compost, biochar + compost, and bentonite clay + biochar + compost. All treatments were applied in 2011. Significant (p < 0.05) treatment effects in CWP and growing period evapotranspiration were determined. At Naphok, differences between the amended and control plots in CWP varied between 0.1 and 0.6 kg m?3 in 2011 and from 0.1 to 0.4 kg m?3 in 2012, whereas differences at Veunkham varied between 0.3 and 1.0 kg m?3 in 2011 and from 0.05 to 0.29 kg m?3 in 2012. At both sites, CWP in 2012 was significantly lower than 2011. Our results illustrate that organic- and clay-based soil amendments improve CWP, indicating that soil-based interventions could be suitable options for improving agricultural productivity.  相似文献

Abstract

Poor soil structure is the main cause of soil degradation; however, biochar the solid carbon-rich production of pyrolysis biomass could improve the soil structure. Biochar from the feed stock sawdust (SD) and corn cobs (CC) was pyrolyzed at 450?°C. Wheat was grown as a test crop and treatments were control, NPK, SDB1% (sawdust biochar), CCB1% (corn cobs biochar), SDB0.5%+CCB0.5%, SDB1%?+?½ NPK, CCB1%?+?½ NPK. The higher growth, higher grain and dry matter yield were displayed by biochar?+?NPK. The lowest pH, the higher organic matter, available P and available K were observed in SDB0.5%+CCB0.5%. However, the highest total N (1.43?g kg?1) was by NPK treatment. The biochar increased plant available water contents, water contents at field capacity and permanent wilting point, soil porosity and decreased bulk density. The highest stable aggregates were in SDB0.5%+CCB0.5%. Biochar application was found as a useful practice for soil sustainability  相似文献

Abstract

Conventional (CT) and no‐tillage (NT) effects on soil physical properties and bromide (Br) movement were studied at two locations in North Carolina. The soils were a Norfolk sandy loam (fine‐loamy, siliceous, thermic Typic Paleudult) at a North American eastern Coastal Plain location and a Pacolet sandy clay loam (clayey, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Kanhapludult) at a Piedmont location. Bulk density (Db), macroporosity (Mp), and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) were measured in the plant row (R) and trafficked (T) or untrafficked (N) interrow positions. Simulated rain was applied at two intensities to 1?m2 plots after KBr was surface applied. The first simulated rain (30 min) consisted of a low (1.27 cm h?1) or a high (5.08 cm h?1) intensity applied 24 h after Br application. One week later, the high rainfall rate was repeated on all plots. Soil samples for Br determinations were taken 2 days after each rain simulation event to a depth of 40 cm and at the end of the growing season to 120 cm. Soil physical properties were affected by both tillage and position. Bulk density was greater for NT than for CT and in the T compared with R and N row positions. Mp was significantly greater in NT than CT at Coastal Plain location, but the results were opposite at the Piedmont location. Saturated hydraulic conductivity was highly variable ranging from 0.36 cm h?1 to 14.4 cm h?1 at the Coastal Plain location and from 0.06 cm h?1 to 7.12 cm h?1 at the Piedmont location. Saturated hydraulic conductivity at T position was about 100% lower than Ks at N and R positions, but the effect of tillage system was not significant on Ks. The surface 10 cm of soil contained the greatest Br concentration for both tillage systems. For the first and second sampling dates, greater Br movement occurred under NT vs. CT. However, no significant differences were observed in Br movement in the end of season sampling. Because of the coarser soil texture, greater Ks and Mp at the Coastal Plain location, Br moved, to a greater depth at this site than at the Piedmont site.  相似文献

Biochar is used as a soil amendment for improving soil quality and enhancing carbon sequestration. In this study, a loamy sand soil was amended at different rates (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% v/v) of biochar, and its physical and hydraulic properties were analyzed, including particle density, bulk density, porosity, infiltration, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and volumetric water content. The wilting rate of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) grown in soil amended with various levels of biochar was evaluated on a scale of 0–10. Statistical analyses were conducted using linear regression. The results showed that bulk density decreased linearly (R2 = 0.997) from 1.325 to 0.363 g cm?3 while the particle density decreased (R2 = 0.915) from 2.65 to 1.60 g cm?3 with increased biochar amendment, with porosity increasing (R2 = 0.994) from 0.500 to 0.773 cm3 cm?3. The mean volumetric water content ranged from 3.90 to 14.00 cm3 cm?3, while the wilting rate of tomato ranged from 4.67 to 9.50, respectively, for the non-amended soil and 100% biochar-amended soil. These results strongly suggest positive improvement of soil physical and hydraulic properties following addition of biochar amendment.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of biochar and phosphorus fertilizer application on selected soil physical and chemical properties in two contrasting soil types: Rhodic Ferralsols (clay) in Thohoyandou and Leptic Cambisols (loamy sand) in Nelspruit, South Africa. Field experiments were conducted in summer and winter. Treatments consisted of a factorial combination of four biochar levels (0, 5, 10 and 20 t ha?1) and two phosphorus fertilizer levels (0 and 90 kg ha?1) arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Chickpea was the test crop. Soil bulk density, aggregate stability, porosity, total C, total N, C:N ratio, K and Mg were determined. Biochar (10 t ha?1) and phosphorus increased bulk density and decreased porosity at 0–5 and 15–20 cm soil depth on a loamy sand soil in both seasons. The interaction between biochar and phosphorus increased total C and total N on a clay soil in the summer sowing. However, in the loamy sand soil, biochar (10 t ha?1) increased total C, C:N ratio, K and Mg in the summer sowing. The effect of biochar was more evident in the loamy sand soil than the clay soil suggesting that the influence of biochar may be soil-specific.  相似文献

Understanding soil water dynamics and storage is important to avoid crop failure on highly weathered, porous and leached soils. The aim of the study was to relate soil moisture characteristics to particle-size distributions and chemical properties. On average, Atterberg limits were below 25% in the A-horizon and not more than26.56% in the B-horizon, whereas soil bulk density was between 1.27 and 1.66Mgm?3. The saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) was generally between 0.20 and 5.43 cm h?1 in the top soil and <1.31 cm h?1 in the subsoil. The higher Ksat values for the A-horizons were attributed to the influence soil microorganisms operating more in that horizon. The amount of water retained at field capacity or at permanent wilting point was greater in the B-horizons than in the A-horizons, suggesting that clay accumulation in the B-horizon and evapotranspiration effects in the A-horizon may have influenced water retention in the soils. Soil moisture parameters were positively related to clay content, silt content, exchangeable Mg2+, Fe2O3 and Al2O3, and negatively related to sand content, SiO2, sodium absorption ratio, exchangeable sodium percentage and bulk density. The low clay content may explain why drainage was so rapid in the soils.  相似文献

The effects of mouldboard ploughing, shallow tined cultivation and direct drilling on yields of winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape were compared over 10 years. Three field experiments were conducted on two non-calcareous clays (stagnogleys) and a weakly structured silty soil (argillic brown earth). Two spring N levels were applied to the winter wheat plots on the clay soil in three years and to the winter barley plots on the silty soil in one year. This paper reports the soil bulk density and water content at sowing and the crop growth, yield components and yields obtained during the later years of the study: 1979–1984 on the clayey soils and 1981–1984 on the silty soil.

In the years when cereals were grown, differences in yield between cultivation treatments were small and inconsistent. Oilseed rape yielded significantly more after direct drilling than ploughing because of better establishment and uniformity of growth.

The success of continuous reduced tillage depended on both burning crop residues and good weed control.  相似文献

Summary Measurements of pH were made at the root surface of Trifolium pratense, using Sb electrodes. Nodulated plants were grown in rhizotrones on a sandy soil free of carbonate and on a clay soil rich in carbonate. In the sandy soil, pH at the surface of root laterals was about 1 unit lower than in the bulk soil. The lowest pH values were found at the root tips. In the calcareous soil, pH measured at the root surface did not differ from pH in the bulk soil. This soil had a much higher H+ buffer capacity than the sandy soils. It seems likely that H+ ions excreted from the roots grown in the calcareous soil were directly neutralized by soil carbonate.  相似文献

A field study was performed for two consecutive seasons to evaluate the effect of polyacrylamide (PAM), tillage systems and particle size on soil physical properties and wheat grain yield. The PAM rates were 0, 10 and 20 kg ha?1 while the tillage treatments included no-tillage (NT), moldboard plowing (CT1), and chisel plowing (CT2). Soil fine particles size of two locations were A (25.2 silt + clay) and B (38.5 silt + clay). Location B reported higher organic matter and total porosity while lower in bulk density. The CT1 and NT treatments denoted better soil organic matter percentage. The CT1 presented maximum infiltration rate compared to other tillage systems. No tillage showed better soil water contents while the minimum was in CT1 of location A and CT2 of location B. Increasing the PAM rate increased total porosity, infiltration rate and soil water content while decreased soil bulk density. Possibly, the presence of compacted layer in location A hindered the effect of PAM. At location B, the CT2 with PAM of 20 kg ha?1 had the highest grain yield compared to other tillage systems. The PAM is beneficial for soil and water conservation and can be used in agriculture.  相似文献

Two acidic soils (initial pH, 4.6) with contrasting soil organic C (SOC) contents (11.5 and 40 g C kg?1) were incubated with 13C-labelled lime (Ca13CO3) at four different rates (nil, target pH 5, 5.8 and 6.5) and three application depths (0–10, 20–30 and 0–30 cm). We hypothesised that liming would stimulate SOC mineralisation by removing pH constraints on soil microbes and that the increase in mineralisation in limed soil would be greatest in the high-C soil and lowest when the lime was applied in the subsoil. While greater SOC mineralisation was observed during the first 3 days, likely due to lime-induced increases in SOC solubility, this effect was transient. In contrast, SOC mineralisation was lower in limed than in non-limed soils over the 87-day study, although only significant in the Tenosol (70 μg C g?1 soil, 9.15%). We propose that the decrease in SOC mineralisation following liming in the low-C soil was due to increased microbial C-use efficiency, as soil microbial communities used less energy maintaining intracellular pH or community composition changed. A greater reduction in SOC mineralisation in the Tenosol for low rates of lime (0.3 and 0.5 g column?1) or when the high lime rate (0.8 g column?1) was mixed through the entire soil column without changes in microbial biomass C (MBC) could indicate a more pronounced stabilising effect of Ca2+ in the Tenosol than the Chromosol with higher clay content and pH buffer capacity. Our study suggests that liming to ameliorate soil acidity constraints on crop productivity may also help to reduce soil C mineralisation in some soils.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Biochar has not been adequately used by farmers to improve the clay textured soil productivities in the world. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the effect of the co-application of biochar with different rates of phosphorus (P) fertilizer on selected soil physical properties and wheat yield on clay textured soil over two growth seasons. Biochar treatments occupied the main plots at a rate of 0.0 and 10 t ha?1, while the sub-plots were devoted to phosphorus rates at rates of 0%, 50%, 100%, and 150% of recommended P fertilizers. Biochar (10 t ha?1) and P at different rates decreased soil bulk density significantly. Meanwhile, it increased aggregate stability, saturated hydraulic conductivity and soil water retention significantly at (p < .05), and it improved the grain yield of wheat. More grain yields in the soil treated with biochar than untreated soil under all P application rates for both years were probably caused partially by more nutrients (N, P, and K) were applied from biochar itself. Grain yield of wheat in the soil-amended biochar and P did not increase significantly between the application at 50%, 100% and 150% P. The results of this study indicate that phosphorus blends with biochar can be used to decrease the bulk density of clay textured soils and to improve crop production in these soils.  相似文献

Tillage is an important agricultural operation which influences soil properties, crop yield and environment. Nine combinations of three tillage practices including conventional tillage (CT), minimum tillage (MT) and zero tillage (ZT) were evaluated in fodder sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) + cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) – wheat (Triticum durum) cropping system for 5 years (2009–2014) on clay loam soil under limited irrigation. Continuous ZT practices significantly improved surface soil organic carbon, bulk density, infiltration rate and maximum water holding capacity. Carbon sequestration rate, soil organic carbon stock and soil enzymatic activities were relatively more under ZT than CT-CT practice. Higher fodder yield of sorghum + cowpea was recorded with CT (kharif) while wheat grain yield with ZT (rabi). However, the system productivity was statistically similar in all the tillage treatments on pooled data basis. The economic benefits were also maximum under ZT-ZT practice. The ZT-ZT practice recorded significantly lowest energy input (17.1 GJ ha?1) which resulted in highest energy use efficiency (13.6) and energy productivity (518 kg GJ?1). Thus, adoption of ZT significantly improved soil health, stabilized crop yield, increased profitability and energy use efficiency in the semi-arid agro-ecosystem.  相似文献

Purpose

Appropriate land management is important for improving the soil quality and productivity of the saline-sodic farmland. A recent study has revealed that flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum and lignite humic acid application enhanced the salt leaching and crop production. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of applied FGD gypsum and lignite humic acid (powder) on the soil organic matter (SOM) content and physical properties.

Materials and methods

This study was based on a field experiment of five consecutive rapeseed-maize rotations in a saline-sodic farmland soil (Aquic Halaquepts) at coastal area of North Jiangsu Province, China. The soil is sandy clay loam texture with pH of 8.43 and clay content of 185 g kg?1. Six treatments included three FGD gypsum rates (0, 1.6, and 3.2 Mg ha?1) and two lignite humic acid rates (0 and 1.5 Mg ha?1). The amendments were incorporated into 0–20 cm soil depth manually every year. Soil samples were collected from each treatment and analyzed for soil organic matter, water-stable aggregates (wet sieving method), bulk density (clod method), water retention capacity (pressure plate apparatus), total porosity (calculated from bulk density and particle density), and microporosity (calculated from water content at 0.01 MPa).

Results and discussion

After 5 years, the SOM and soil physical properties were significantly (P?<?0.05) affected by the application of FGD gypsum and lignite humic acid, especially at the 0–20 cm soil depth. The highest amount of SOM with best soil physical condition was observed in the field which was treated with FGD gypsum at 3.2 Mg ha?1 with lignite humic acid, and the SOM, total porosity (TP), microporosity (MP), mean weight diameter (MWD), water-stable macroaggregate (WSMA), and available water content (AWC) were increased by 22.8, 6.34, 23.2, 48.1, 55.5, and 15.8 %, respectively, while the bulk density (BD) was decreased by 5.9 % compared to no amendments applied. The generalized linear regression analysis showed that the SOM explained 42.9, 55.0, 48.5, and 54.2 % of the variability for BD, MWD, WSMA, and MP, respectively.

Conclusions

This study illustrates the benefits of applying FGD gypsum and lignite humic acid for increasing the soil organic matter content and improving the soil physical properties and suggests a great potential for ameliorating saline-sodic farmland soil (Aquic Halaquepts) by using combined amendment of FGD gypsum with lignite humic acid.

A 3-year investigation was carried out on the effect of annual compaction by 10- and 20-t axle−1 loads applied at 2 soil moisture contents on bulk densities and on corn (Zea mays L.) yields in a clay soil. Maximum bulk densities, and the depth at which they occurred, increased with each annual loading. Only the 20-t axle−1 loading increased soil density when compacting under dry conditions. However, both loading levels led to increases in density when applied under relatively wet conditions. Under the latter conditions, moldboard plowing and overwintering did not fully relieve topsoil compaction. Trends in crop responses to compaction were similar to those of soil bulk density. However, corn yield reductions were much more pronounced than were changes in soil structure. Differences in yields between the effects of each loading level increased with annual compaction.  相似文献
